दुर्योधन उवाच किमर्थं भरतश्रेष्ठ न हन्यास्त्वं शिखण्डिनम् उद्यतेषुमथो दृष्ट्वा समरेष्वाततायिनम्

Duryodhana asked: "O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! When you see Śikhaṇḍī in the field of battle, with arrows raised and ready to slay you, what is the reason for you not to kill him?

दुर्योधन ने पूछा: "हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! जब आप युद्ध के मैदान में शिखंडी को तीर उठाए हुए देखते हैं और आपको मारने के लिए तैयार होते हैं, तो आपके उसे न मारने का क्या कारण है?"

पूर्वमुक्त्वा महाबाहो पाण्डवान्सह सोमकैः वधिष्यामीति गाङ्गेय तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह

O mighty-armed one! You said earlier that you would kill the Pāñcāla-s and the Somaka-s. O Gāṅgeya! O grandfather! Tell me the reason for this."

हे महाबाहु! आपने पहले कहा था कि आप पंचालों और सोमकों को मार डालेंगे। हे गांगेय! हे दादा! मुझे इसका कारण बताओ।”

भीष्म उवाच शृणु दुर्योधन कथां सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः यदर्थं युधि संप्रेक्ष्य नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम्

Bhīṣma replied: "O Duryodhana! Together with the lords of the earth, listen to the reason why I will not kill Śikhaṇḍī when I see him in the field of battle.

भीष्म ने उत्तर दिया: "हे दुर्योधन! पृथ्वी के राजाओं सहित, इस कारण को सुनो कि जब मैं शिखंडी को युद्ध के मैदान में देखूंगा तो उसे क्यों नहीं मारूंगा।

महाराजो मम पिता शंतनुर्भरतर्षभः दिष्टान्तं प्राप धर्मात्मा समये पुरुषर्षभ

My father, King Śāntanu, was a bull among the Bhārata lineage and had dharma in his soul. O bull among men! In course of time, he met his destiny.

मेरे पिता, राजा शांतनु, भरत वंश के एक बैल थे और उनकी आत्मा में धर्म था। हे मनुष्यों में बैल! समय के साथ, वह अपने भाग्य से मिला।

ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रतिज्ञां परिपालयन् चित्राङ्गदं भ्रातरं वै महाराज्येऽभ्यषेचयम्

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! I then fulfilled my promise. I consecrated my brother Citrāṅgadā as the great king.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! फिर मैंने अपना वादा पूरा किया. मैंने अपने भाई चित्रांगदा को महान राजा के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित किया।

तस्मिंश्च निधनं प्राप्ते सत्यवत्या मते स्थितः विचित्रवीर्यं राजानमभ्यषिञ्चं यथाविधि

When he died, abiding by the instructions of Satyavatī and in accordance with the decreed rites, I instated Vicitravīrya as the king.

जब उनकी मृत्यु हुई, तो सत्यवती के निर्देशों का पालन करते हुए और निर्धारित संस्कारों के अनुसार, मैंने विचित्रवीर्य को राजा नियुक्त किया।

मयाभिषिक्तो राजेन्द्र यवीयानपि धर्मतः विचित्रवीर्यो धर्मात्मा मामेव समुदैक्षत

O Indra among kings! Though he was young, he was consecrated by me in accordance with dharma. Vicitravīrya had dharma in his soul and glanced towards me for everything.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! हालाँकि वह छोटा था, फिर भी धर्म के अनुसार मेरे द्वारा उसका अभिषेक किया गया। विचित्रवीर्य की आत्मा में धर्म था और वह हर चीज़ के लिए मेरी ओर देखता था।

तस्य दारक्रियां तात चिकीर्षुरहमप्युत अनुरूपादिव कुलादिति चिन्त्य मनो दधे

O son! I desired to obtain brides for him and reflected on those who would be equal in beauty and lineage.

हे वत्स मैं उसके लिए दुल्हनें लाने की इच्छा रखता था और उन लोगों पर विचार करता था जो सुंदरता और वंश में समान हों।

तथाश्रौषं महाबाहो तिस्रः कन्याः स्वयंवरे रूपेणाप्रतिमाः सर्वाः काशिराजसुतास्तदा अम्बा चैवाम्बिका चैव तथैवाम्बालिकापरा

O mighty-armed one! At that time, I heard that the three daughters of the king of Kāśi would be given away in a svayaṃvara. All of them were unrivalled in beauty and their names were Ambā, Ambikā and Ambālika.

हे महाबाहु! उस समय, मैंने सुना कि काशी के राजा की तीन बेटियों का विवाह एक स्वयंवर में किया जाएगा। वे सभी सुंदरता में अद्वितीय थीं और उनके नाम अम्बा, अम्बिका और अम्बालिका थे।

राजानश्च समाहूताः पृथिव्यां भरतर्षभ अम्बा ज्येष्ठाभवत्तासामम्बिका त्वथ मध्यमा अम्बालिका च राजेन्द्र राजकन्या यवीयसी

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! All the kings of the earth had been summoned there. O Indra among kings! Ambā was the eldest and Ambikā was the one in the middle, while Ambālika was the youngest princess.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! वहाँ पृथ्वी के सभी राजाओं को बुलाया गया था। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! अम्बा सबसे बड़ी थी और अम्बिका बीच में थी, जबकि अम्बालिका सबसे छोटी राजकुमारी थी।

सोऽहमेकरथेनैव गतः काशिपतेः पुरीम् अपश्यं ता महाबाहो तिस्रः कन्याः स्वलंकृताः राज्ञश्चैव समावृत्तान्पार्थिवान्पृथिवीपते

On a single chariot, I went to the capital of the lord of Kāśi. O mighty-armed one! O lord of the earth! I saw the three ornamented maidens there and the kings, the lords of the earth, who had assembled there.

मैं एक ही रथ पर सवार होकर काशीराज की राजधानी में गया। हे महाबाहु! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! मैंने वहां तीन अलंकृत युवतियों और पृथ्वी के राजाओं, राजाओं को देखा, जो वहां इकट्ठे हुए थे।

ततोऽहं तान्नृपान्सर्वानाहूय समरे स्थितान् रथमारोपयां चक्रे कन्यास्ता भरतर्षभ

Established in battle, I challenged all those kings. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! I raised those maidens onto my chariot.

मैंने युद्ध में स्थापित होकर उन सभी राजाओं को चुनौती दी। हे भरत वंश में बैल! मैंने उन युवतियों को अपने रथ पर बैठा लिया।

वीर्यशुल्काश्च ता ज्ञात्वा समारोप्य रथं तदा अवोचं पार्थिवान्सर्वानहं तत्र समागतान् भीष्मः शांतनवः कन्या हरतीति पुनः पुनः

Knowing that they were being offered as vīryaśulka, I raised them onto my chariot and told all the lords of the earth who had assembled there, "Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, is taking these maidens away by force." I repeated the challenge.

यह जानते हुए कि उन्हें वीर्यशूल्क के रूप में अर्पित किया जा रहा है, मैंने उन्हें अपने रथ पर चढ़ाया और वहां एकत्र हुए पृथ्वी के सभी देवताओं से कहा, "शान्तनु के पुत्र भीष्म, इन युवतियों को बलपूर्वक ले जा रहे हैं।" मैंने चुनौती दोहराई.

ते यतध्वं परं शक्त्या सर्वे मोक्षाय पार्थिवाः प्रसह्य हि नयाम्येष मिषतां वो नराधिपाः

"O kings! Use the limits of your strength to set them free. O lords of men! I am forcibly abducting them, in front of your eyes."

"हे राजाओं! उन्हें मुक्त करने के लिए अपनी शक्ति की सीमा का प्रयोग करें। हे मानव देवताओं! मैं आपकी आंखों के सामने, उन्हें बलपूर्वक अपहरण कर रहा हूं।"

ततस्ते पृथिवीपालाः समुत्पेतुरुदायुधाः योगो योग इति क्रुद्धाः सारथींश्चाप्यचोदयन्

At this, all those lords of the earth arose, with weapons upraised. Enraged, they instructed their charioteers to yoke the chariots.

इस पर पृथ्वी के वे सभी स्वामी हथियार उठाए हुए उठ खड़े हुए। क्रोधित होकर, उन्होंने अपने सारथियों को रथों पर जोत लगाने का निर्देश दिया।

ते रथैर्मेघसंकाशैर्गजैश्च गजयोधिनः पृष्ठ्यैश्चाश्वैर्महीपालाः समुत्पेतुरुदायुधाः

Some were on chariots that were like the clouds. Others were on elephants and were warriors who fought on elephants. Other lords of the earth were on the backs of horses. They arose, with weapons upraised.

कुछ लोग बादलों के समान रथों पर सवार थे। अन्य लोग हाथियों पर सवार थे और हाथियों पर लड़ने वाले योद्धा थे। पृथ्वी के अन्य स्वामी घोड़ों की पीठ पर थे। वे उठे, हथियार उठाए हुए।

ततस्ते मां महीपालाः सर्व एव विशां पते रथव्रातेन महता सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्

O lord of the earth! Those lords of the earth surrounded me from all directions. With a great mās-s of chariots, they attacked me from all sides.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उन पृथ्वीराजों ने मुझे सब दिशाओं से घेर लिया। उन्होंने बड़ी संख्या में रथों के साथ मुझ पर चारों ओर से आक्रमण किया।

तानहं शरवर्षेण महता प्रत्यवारयम् सर्वान्नृपांश्चाप्यजयं देवराडिव दानवान्

I repulsed them with a great shower of arrows. I vanquished all those kings, like the king of the gods against the dānava-s.

मैंने बाणों की भारी वर्षा करके उन्हें खदेड़ दिया। मैंने दानवों के विरुद्ध देवताओं के राजा की तरह उन सभी राजाओं को परास्त कर दिया।

तेषामापततां चित्रान्ध्वजान्हेमपरिष्कृतान् एकैकेन हि बाणेन भूमौ पातितवानहम्

I brought down their colourful and gold-embellished standards. With a single arrow each, I brought them down on the ground.

मैंने उनके रंगीन और सोने से सजाए गए मानकों को नीचे ला दिया। मैंने एक-एक बाण मारकर उन्हें भूमि पर गिरा दिया।

हयांश्चैषां गजांश्चैव सारथींश्चाप्यहं रणे अपातयं शरैर्दीप्तैः प्रहसन्पुरुषर्षभ

O bull among men! I laughed and used my flaming arrows to bring down their horses, elephants and chariots in that battle.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! मैंने हँसते हुए उस युद्ध में उनके घोड़ों, हाथियों और रथों को गिराने के लिए अपने ज्वलंत बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

ते निवृत्ताश्च भग्नाश्च दृष्ट्वा तल्लाघवं मम अथाहं हास्तिनपुरमायां जित्वा महीक्षितः

On seeing the dexterity of my palms, they were shattered and retreated. After vanquishing those lords of the earth, I returned to Hāstinapura.

मेरी हथेलियों की चपलता देखकर वे टूट गये और पीछे हट गये। पृथ्वी के उन राजाओं को परास्त करने के बाद, मैं हस्तिनापुर लौट आया।

अतोऽहं ताश्च कन्या वै भ्रातुरर्थाय भारत तच्च कर्म महाबाहो सत्यवत्यै न्यवेदयम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O mighty-armed one! I recounted my deed to Satyavatī and handed over the maidens for my brother."

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे महाबाहु! मैंने अपना कृत्य सत्यवती को बताया और युवतियों को अपने भाई के लिए सौंप दिया।"
