वैशंपायन उवाच तेष्वासीनेषु सर्वेषु तूष्णींभूतेषु राजसु वाक्यमभ्याददे कृष्णः सुदंष्ट्रो दुन्दुभिस्वनः

Vaiśampāyana said: When all the kings had seated themselves and were silent, Kṛṣṇā, whose teeth were excellent, began to speak in a voice that rumbled like a drum

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब सभी राजा बैठ गए और चुप हो गए, तो कृष्ण, जिनके दांत उत्कृष्ट थे, ने ड्रम की तरह गड़गड़ाने वाली आवाज में बोलना शुरू किया

जीमूत इव घर्मान्ते सर्वां संश्रावयन्सभाम् धृतराष्ट्रमभिप्रेक्ष्य समभाषत माधवः

or like a cloud at the end of the summer. Mādhava addressed Dhṛtarāṣṭra so that everyone in the assembly hall could hear him.

या गर्मियों के अंत में बादल की तरह। माधव ने धृतराष्ट्र को संबोधित किया ताकि सभा कक्ष में हर कोई उसे सुन सके।

कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च शमः स्यादिति भारत अप्रयत्नेन वीराणामेतद्यतितुमागतः

"O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! May there be peace between the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s, without any endeavours at war on the part of the warriors. That is the reason why I have come.

"हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कौरवों और पांडवों के बीच शांति हो, योद्धाओं की ओर से युद्ध के किसी भी प्रयास के बिना। यही कारण है कि मैं आया हूं।

राजन्नान्यत्प्रवक्तव्यं तव निःश्रेयसं वचः विदितं ह्येव ते सर्वं वेदितव्यमरिंदम

O king! I have nothing else to say, no other words that can be beneficial. O destroyer of enemies! You know everything that deserves to be known.

हे राजा! मेरे पास कहने के लिए और कुछ नहीं है, कोई अन्य शब्द नहीं है जो लाभकारी हो। हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! आप वह सब कुछ जानते हैं जो जानने योग्य है।

इदमद्य कुलं श्रेष्ठं सर्वराजसु पार्थिव श्रुतवृत्तोपसंपन्नं सर्वैः समुदितं गुणैः

O lord of the earth! This lineage of yours is supreme among all the kings. It is known for its learning and conduct and possesses all the qualities.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आपका यह वंश समस्त राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ है। यह अपनी विद्या और आचरण के लिए जाना जाता है और इसमें सभी गुण मौजूद होते हैं।

कृपानुकम्पा कारुण्यमानृशंस्यं च भारत तथार्जवं क्षमा सत्यं कुरुष्वेतद्विशिष्यते

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Compassion, sympathy, kindness, non-violence, uprightness, forgiveness and truthfulness—all these distinguish the Kuru-s.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! करुणा, सहानुभूति, दयालुता, अहिंसा, ईमानदारी, क्षमा और सच्चाई - ये सभी कुरु-एस को अलग करते हैं।

तस्मिन्नेवंविधे राजन्कुले महति तिष्ठति त्वन्निमित्तं विशेषेण नेह युक्तमसांप्रतम्

O king! Belonging to a lineage that is great in these ways, an improper act on your part is especially to be deplored.

हे राजा! एक ऐसे वंश से संबंध रखते हुए जो इन मायनों में महान है, आपकी ओर से एक अनुचित कार्य विशेष रूप से निंदा योग्य है।

त्वं हि वारयिता श्रेष्ठः कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम मिथ्या प्रचरतां तात बाह्येष्वाभ्यन्तरेषु च

O supreme among the Kuru-s! O father! You are foremost among those who restrain the Kuru-s when they act in accordance with falsehood, whether with outsiders or insiders.

हे कुरु-श्रेष्ठ! हे पिता! आप उन लोगों में अग्रणी हैं जो कुरुवंशियों को उस समय रोकते हैं जब वे झूठ के अनुसार कार्य करते हैं, चाहे वे बाहरी लोगों के साथ हों या अंदर के लोगों के साथ।

ते पुत्रास्तव कौरव्य दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः धर्मार्थौ पृष्ठतः कृत्वा प्रचरन्ति नृशंसवत्

O Kauravya! With Duryodhana leading the way, these sons of yours have turned their backs on dharma and artha and have strayed into violence.

हे कौरव्य! दुर्योधन के मार्ग में आने से आपके ये पुत्र धर्म और अर्थ से विमुख हो गये हैं और हिंसा में प्रवृत्त हो गये हैं।

अशिष्टा गतमर्यादा लोभेन हृतचेतसः स्वेषु बन्धुषु मुख्येषु तद्वेत्थ भरतर्षभ

They are wicked. They have transgressed honour. They have lost their senses because of their avarice, even towards their chief relatives. O bull among Bhārata-s! You know this.

वे दुष्ट हैं. उन्होंने सम्मान का उल्लंघन किया है. अपने लोभ के कारण वे अपने मुख्य सम्बन्धियों के प्रति भी अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे हैं। हे भरतवंशियों में से बैल! आप यह जानते है।

सेयमापन्महाघोरा कुरुष्वेव समुत्थिता उपेक्ष्यमाणा कौरव्य पृथिवीं घातयिष्यति

An extremely terrible calamity has arisen before the Kuru-s. O Kauravya! If it is ignored, it will destroy the earth.

कुरु-वंश के सामने अत्यंत भयंकर विपत्ति उत्पन्न हो गयी है। हे कौरव्य! यदि इसे नजरअंदाज किया गया तो यह पृथ्वी को नष्ट कर देगा।

शक्या चेयं शमयितुं त्वं चेदिच्छसि भारत न दुष्करो ह्यत्र शमो मतो मे भरतर्षभ

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! If you wish to do so, you are capable of pacifying this. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! It is my view that it will not be difficult to obtain peace.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यदि आप ऐसा करना चाहते हैं तो आप इसे शांत करने में सक्षम हैं। हे भरत वंश में बैल! मेरा विचार है कि शांति प्राप्त करना कठिन नहीं होगा।

त्वय्यधीनः शमो राजन्मयि चैव विशां पते पुत्रान्स्थापय कौरव्य स्थापयिष्याम्यहं परान्

O king! Peace depends on you. O lord of the earth! It depends on me. O Kauravya! Establish your sons and I will establish the others.

हे राजा! शांति आप पर निर्भर है. हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! यह मुझ पर निर्भर करता है. हे कौरव्य! अपने पुत्रों को स्थापित करो और मैं दूसरों को स्थापित करूंगा।

आज्ञा तव हि राजेन्द्र कार्या पुत्रैः सहान्वयैः हितं बलवदप्येषां तिष्ठतां तव शासने

O Indra among kings! Your sons and their followers must obey your instructions, because if they act in accordance with your instructions, that will ensure their great welfare.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! आपके पुत्रों और उनके अनुयायियों को आपके निर्देशों का पालन करना चाहिए, क्योंकि यदि वे आपके निर्देशों के अनुसार कार्य करेंगे, तो इससे उनका महान कल्याण सुनिश्चित होगा।

तव चैव हितं राजन्पाण्डवानामथो हितम् शमे प्रयतमानस्य मम शासनकाङ्क्षिणाम्

O king! What is beneficial for you will also be beneficial for the Pāṇḍava-s. They wish to be instructed by you, while I endeavour for peace.

हे राजा! जो आपके लिए लाभदायक है वह पांडवों के लिए भी लाभदायक होगा। वे आपसे निर्देश पाना चाहते हैं, जबकि मैं शांति के लिए प्रयास करता हूं।

स्वयं निष्कलमालक्ष्य संविधत्स्व विशां पते सहभूतास्तु भरतास्तवैव स्युर्जनेश्वर

O lord of the earth! Reflect on the consequences and then act accordingly. O lord of men! You are capable of uniting the Bhārata-s.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! परिणामों पर विचार करें और फिर उसके अनुसार कार्य करें। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आप भारत को एकजुट करने में सक्षम हैं।

धर्मार्थयोस्तिष्ठ राजन्पाण्डवैरभिरक्षितः न हि शक्यास्तथाभूता यत्नादपि नराधिप

O king! Protected by the Pāṇḍava-s, you will be established in dharma and artha. O lord of men! However muc you try, you will not obtain people like them.

हे राजा! पांडवों द्वारा संरक्षित, आप धर्म और अर्थ में स्थापित होंगे। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आप चाहे कितनी भी कोशिश कर लें, आपको उनके जैसे लोग नहीं मिलेंगे।

न हि त्वां पाण्डवैर्जेतुं रक्ष्यमाणं महात्मभिः इन्द्रोऽपि देवैः सहितः प्रसहेत कुतो नृपाः

When the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s protect you, not even Indra with the gods can withstand you. How can kings?

जब महाबली पाण्डव आपकी रक्षा करेंगे तो देवताओं सहित इन्द्र भी आपका सामना नहीं कर सकेंगे। राजा कैसे हो सकते हैं?

यत्र भीष्मश्च द्रोणश्च कृपः कर्णो विविंशतिः अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सोमदत्तोऽथ बाह्लिकः

Where Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Viviṃśati, Aśvatthāma, Vikarṇa, Somadatta, Bahlika,

जहां भीष्म, द्रोण, कृप, कर्ण, विविंशति, अश्वत्थामा, विकर्ण, सोमदत्त, बाह्लीक,

सैन्धवश्च कलिङ्गश्च काम्बोजश्च सुदक्षिणः युधिष्ठिरो भीमसेनः सव्यसाची यमौ तथा

Saindhava, Kāliṅga, Kāmboja, Sudakṣiṇa, Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena, Savyasachi,

सैंधव, कलिंग, कंबोज, सुदक्षिण, युधिष्ठिर, भीमसेन, सव्यसाची,

सात्यकिश्च महातेजा युयुत्सुश्च महारथः को नु तान्विपरीतात्मा युध्येत भरतर्षभ

the twins and the immensely energetic mahāratha Sātyaki are together, O bull among the Bhārata lineage, who will wish to fight against them?

हे भरत वंश के बैल, जुड़वाँ बच्चे और अत्यंत ऊर्जावान महारथ सात्यकि एक साथ हैं, कौन उनके खिलाफ लड़ना चाहेगा?

लोकस्येश्वरतां भूयः शत्रुभिश्चाप्रधृष्यताम् प्राप्स्यसि त्वममित्रघ्न सहितः कुरुपाण्डवैः

O destroyer of enemies! With the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s, you will become invincible before your enemies and will become the unrivalled lord of the world.

हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! कुरु और पांडवों के साथ, आप अपने शत्रुओं के सामने अजेय हो जाएंगे और दुनिया के बेजोड़ स्वामी बन जाएंगे।

तस्य ते पृथिवीपालास्त्वत्समाः पृथिवीपते श्रेयांसश्चैव राजानः संधास्यन्ते परंतप

O lord of the earth! O scorcher of enemies! Lords of the earth who are your equal and kings who are your superior will seek alliances with you.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! पृथ्वी के स्वामी जो तुम्हारे तुल्य हैं और जो राजा तुमसे श्रेष्ठ हैं वे तुम्हारे साथ संधि करना चाहेंगे।

स त्वं पुत्रैश्च पौत्रैश्च भ्रातृभिः पितृभिस्तथा सुहृद्भिः सर्वतो गुप्तः सुखं शक्ष्यसि जीवितुम्

Protected in every direction by your sons, grandsons, brothers, fathers and well-wishers, you will live happily.

आप अपने पुत्रों, पौत्रों, भाइयों, पिताओं तथा शुभचिंतकों द्वारा हर दिशा से सुरक्षित होकर सुखपूर्वक रहेंगे।

एतानेव पुरोधाय सत्कृत्य च यथा पुरा अखिलां भोक्ष्यसे सर्वां पृथिवीं पृथिवीपते

O lord of the earth! Give primacy to their interests and treat them well, as you have in the past, and you will enjoy the entire earth.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उनके हितों को प्रधानता दें और उनके साथ अच्छा व्यवहार करें, जैसा आपने पहले किया था, और आप पूरी पृथ्वी का आनंद लेंगे।

एतैर्हि सहितः सर्वैः पाण्डवैः स्वैश्च भारत अन्यान्विजेष्यसे शत्रूनेष स्वार्थस्तवाखिलः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Together with the Pāṇḍava-s and your own, you will triumph over enemies and this will be in your own interests.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आप पांडवों और अपने परिवार के साथ मिलकर शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त करेंगे और यह आपके ही हित में होगा।

तैरेवोपार्जितां भूमिं भोक्ष्यसे च परंतप यदि संपत्स्यसे पुत्रैः सहामात्यैर्नराधिप

O scorcher of enemies! O lord of men! If you are united with your sons and advisers, you will enjoy land that will be conquered by them.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! यदि आप अपने पुत्रों और सलाहकारों के साथ एकजुट हैं, तो आप उस भूमि का आनंद लेंगे जो उनके द्वारा जीती जाएगी।

संयुगे वै महाराज दृश्यते सुमहान्क्षयः क्षये चोभयतो राजन्कं धर्ममनुपश्यसि

O great king! But if there is war, a great destruction can be seen. O king! There will be destruction on both sides. What dharma do you see in that?

हे महान राजा! लेकिन अगर युद्ध हुआ तो भारी तबाही देखने को मिल सकती है. हे राजा! दोनों तरफ विनाश होगा. आप इसमें कौन सा धर्म देखते हैं?

पाण्डवैर्निहतैः संख्ये पुत्रैर्वापि महाबलैः यद्विन्देथाः सुखं राजंस्तद्ब्रूहि भरतर्षभ

The Pāṇḍava-s may be killed in battle, or your immensely strong sons. O king! O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Tell me the happiness that you will feel then.

युद्ध में पांडव मारे जा सकते हैं, या आपके अत्यंत बलशाली पुत्र। हे राजा! हे भरत वंश में बैल! तब मुझे जो ख़ुशी महसूस होगी वो बताओ.

शूराश्च हि कृतास्त्राश्च सर्वे युद्धाभिकाङ्क्षिणः पाण्डवास्तावकाश्चैव तान्रक्ष महतो भयात्

They are brave ones, skilled in the usage of weapons, and all of them, the Pāṇḍava-s and your own, wish to fight. Save them from a great danger.

वे शूरवीर हैं, शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल हैं और वे सभी, पांडव और आपके अपने, युद्ध करना चाहते हैं। उन्हें एक बड़े खतरे से बचाएं.

न पश्येम कुरून्सर्वान्पाण्डवांश्चैव संयुगे क्षीणानुभयतः शूरान्रथेभ्यो रथिभिर्हतान्

If there is a battle, we will not see all the Kuru-s, or the Pāṇḍava-s. Brave ones will be destroyed on both sides. Charioteers will kill charioteers.

यदि युद्ध होता है, तो हम सभी कुरु-या पांडवों को नहीं देख पाएंगे। दोनों ओर से वीर नष्ट हो जायेंगे। सारथी रथियों को मार डालेंगे।

समवेताः पृथिव्यां हि राजानो राजसत्तम अमर्षवशमापन्ना नाशयेयुरिमाः प्रजाः

O supreme among kings! All the kings of earth have gathered together. They are under the influence of anger and will destroy your subjects.

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! पृथ्वी के सभी राजा एक साथ इकट्ठे हुए हैं। वे क्रोध के वश में हैं और तुम्हारी प्रजा का नाश कर देंगे।

त्राहि राजन्निमं लोकं न नश्येयुरिमाः प्रजाः त्वयि प्रकृतिमापन्ने शेषं स्यात्कुरुनन्दन

O king! Save the world and do not destroy your subjects. O descendant of the Kuru lineage! If you return to your natural state, some remnants may be left.

हे राजा! दुनिया को बचाएं और अपनी प्रजा को नष्ट न करें। हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! यदि आप अपनी प्राकृतिक अवस्था में लौटते हैं, तो कुछ अवशेष बचे रह सकते हैं।

शुक्ला वदान्या ह्रीमन्त आर्याः पुण्याभिजातयः अन्योन्यसचिवा राजंस्तान्पाहि महतो भयात्

They are pure. They are generous. They are modest. They are āryā-s. They are born of pure lineages. They are related to one another. O king! Save them from this great danger.

वे शुद्ध हैं. वे उदार हैं. वे विनम्र हैं. वे आर्य हैं । वे शुद्ध वंश में जन्मे हैं। वे एक दूसरे से संबंधित हैं. हे राजा! उन्हें इस बड़े खतरे से बचाएं.

शिवेनेमे भूमिपालाः समागम्य परस्परम् सह भुक्त्वा च पीत्वा च प्रतियान्तु यथागृहम्

Let the lords of the earth meet each other in auspicious circumstances. Let them eat and drink together and let them return to their respective homes,

पृथ्वी के स्वामी शुभ परिस्थितियों में एक दूसरे से मिलें। वे एक साथ खाएँ-पीएँ, और अपने-अपने घर लौट जाएँ।

सुवाससः स्रग्विणश्च सत्कृत्य भरतर्षभ अमर्षांश्च निराकृत्य वैराणि च परंतप

with excellent garments and beautiful garlands, and duly honoured. O scorcher of enemies! Let the intolerance and enmity be restrained. O bull among the Bhārata lineage!

उत्कृष्ट वस्त्रों और सुन्दर मालाओं से और विधिवत् आदर-सत्कार किया गया। हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! असहिष्णुता और शत्रुता पर लगाम लगाई जाए. हे भरत वंश में बैल!

हार्दं यत्पाण्डवेष्वासीत्प्राप्तेऽस्मिन्नायुषः क्षये तदेव ते भवत्वद्य शश्वच्च भरतर्षभ

When so muc of your age has elapsed, let the affection that you once felt for the Pāṇḍava-s return again, now and for always.

जब आपकी उम्र का इतना समय बीत चुका है, तो पांडवों के प्रति जो स्नेह आपने एक बार महसूस किया था, वह अभी और हमेशा के लिए फिर से लौट आए।

बाला विहीनाः पित्रा ते त्वयैव परिवर्धिताः तान्पालय यथान्यायं पुत्रांश्च भरतर्षभ

They lost their father when they were children and were reared by you. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Protect them in a proper way, as you would your own sons.

जब वे बच्चे थे तब उन्होंने अपने पिता को खो दिया था और उनका पालन-पोषण आपके द्वारा किया गया था। हे भरत वंश में बैल! तुम अपने पुत्रों की भाँति उनकी भी उचित रीति से रक्षा करो।

भवतैव हि रक्ष्यास्ते व्यसनेषु विशेषतः मा ते धर्मस्तथैवार्थो नश्येत भरतर्षभ

You should especially protect them when they face hardships. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Otherwise, your dharma and your artha will be destroyed.

जब वे कठिनाइयों का सामना करें तो आपको विशेष रूप से उनकी रक्षा करनी चाहिए। हे भरत वंश में बैल! अन्यथा तुम्हारा धर्म और अर्थ नष्ट हो जायेगा।

आहुस्त्वां पाण्डवा राजन्नभिवाद्य प्रसाद्य च भवतः शासनाद्दुःखमनुभूतं सहानुगैः

O king! The Pāṇḍava-s have conveyed their homage and seek your favours, saying, "On your instructions, we and our followers have faced unhappiness.

हे राजा! पांडवों ने अपनी श्रद्धांजलि व्यक्त की है और आपका अनुग्रह चाहते हुए कहा है, "आपके निर्देशों पर, हमने और हमारे अनुयायियों ने दुर्भाग्य का सामना किया है।

द्वादशेमानि वर्षाणि वने निर्व्युषितानि नः त्रयोदशं तथाज्ञातैः सजने परिवत्सरम्

We have dwelt for twelve years in the forest. We lived for a thirteenth year in concealment, unknown to others.

हमने बारह वर्षों तक वन में निवास किया है। हम तेरहवें वर्ष तक छिपकर रहते रहे, दूसरों से अनजान।

स्थाता नः समये तस्मिन्पितेति कृतनिश्चयाः नाहास्म समयं तात तच्च नो ब्राह्मणा विदुः

We spent that time, certain that our father would not deviate from the agreement. O father! We have adhered to the agreement. The brāhmana-s know this.

हमने वह समय इस विश्वास के साथ बिताया कि हमारे पिता समझौते से पीछे नहीं हटेंगे। हे पिता! हमने समझौते का पालन किया है. ब्राह्मण यह जानते हैं.

तस्मिन्नः समये तिष्ठ स्थितानां भरतर्षभ नित्यं संक्लेशिता राजन्स्वराज्यांशं लभेमहि

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Therefore, adhere to the agreement with us, as we have. O king! We have suffered many hardships. We should now obtain our share of the kingdom.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! इसलिए, हमारे साथ हुए समझौते का वैसे ही पालन करें जैसा हमने किया है।' हे राजा! हमने बहुत सी कठिनाइयां झेली हैं. अब हमें राज्य का अपना हिस्सा प्राप्त करना चाहिए।

त्वं धर्ममर्थं युञ्जानः सम्यङ्नस्त्रातुमर्हसि गुरुत्वं भवति प्रेक्ष्य बहून्क्लेशांस्तितिक्ष्महे

Since you know about dharma and artha, it is for you to save us. Seeing that you are our senior, we have borne many hardships.

चूँकि आप धर्म और अर्थ को जानते हैं, इसलिए हमारी रक्षा करना आपका काम है। यह देखकर कि आप हमारे वरिष्ठ हैं, हमने अनेक कष्ट सहे हैं।

स भवान्मातृपितृवदस्मासु प्रतिपद्यताम् गुरोर्गरीयसी वृत्तिर्या च शिष्यस्य भारत

Therefore, act towards us as a mother or a father. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The conduct of a disciple towards his preceptor is supreme.

इसलिए, हमारे प्रति माता या पिता के समान व्यवहार करें। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! शिष्य का अपने गुरु के प्रति आचरण सर्वोच्च होता है।

पित्रा स्थापयितव्या हि वयमुत्पथमास्थिताः संस्थापय पथिष्वस्मांस्तिष्ठ राजन्स्ववर्त्मनि

If we deviate from the path, it is for the father to establish us there. O king! Establish us on the right path and follow that yourself."

यदि हम पथ से भटक जाएं तो हमें वहां स्थापित करना पिता का काम है। हे राजा! हमें सन्मार्ग पर स्थापित करो और स्वयं भी उसी पर चलो।”

आहुश्चेमां परिषदं पुत्रास्ते भरतर्षभ धर्मज्ञेषु सभासत्सु नेह युक्तमसांप्रतम्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Your sons have said this to the assembly. "To those who know about dharma and are in the assembly hall, anything inappropriate is improper,

हे भरत वंश में बैल! यह बात आपके पुत्रों ने सभा से कही है। "जो लोग धर्म के बारे में जानते हैं और सभा कक्ष में हैं, उनके लिए कुछ भी अनुचित अनुचित है,

यत्र धर्मो ह्यधर्मेण सत्यं यत्रानृतेन च हन्यते प्रेक्षमाणानां हतास्तत्र सभासदः

such as when dharma is destroyed by adharma and truth by a falsehood. If this happens in the sight of those who are in the assembly hall, they are themselves killed.

जैसे जब अधर्म से धर्म और असत्य से सत्य नष्ट हो जाता है। यदि सभा भवन में उपस्थित लोगों के सामने ऐसा होता है तो वे स्वयं मारे जाते हैं।

विद्धो धर्मो ह्यधर्मेण सभां यत्र प्रपद्यते न चास्य शल्यं कृन्तन्ति विद्धास्तत्र सभासदः धर्म एतानारुजति यथा नद्यनुकूलजान्

Dharma has been pierced by adharma and has come to this assembly hall. If the stake is not taken out, those who are in the assembly hall are themselves pierced. Dharma destroys them, like a river uproots the trees along its banks."

धर्म अधर्म से आहत होकर इस सभा भवन में आया है। यदि खूंटा नहीं निकाला गया तो जो लोग सभा भवन में हैं, वे स्वयं ही खूंटा खा जाते हैं। धर्म उन्हें नष्ट कर देता है, जैसे नदी अपने किनारे के पेड़ों को उखाड़ देती है।"

ये धर्ममनुपश्यन्तस्तूष्णीं ध्यायन्त आसते ते सत्यमाहुर्धर्मं च न्याय्यं च भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Those who can see dharma, and are silently waiting for it to manifest itself have spoken what is true, righteous and just.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! जो लोग धर्म को देख सकते हैं, और चुपचाप उसके प्रकट होने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं, उन्होंने वही कहा है जो सत्य, धार्मिक और उचित है।

शक्यं किमन्यद्वक्तुं ते दानादन्यज्जनेश्वर ब्रुवन्तु वा महीपालाः सभायां ये समासते धर्मार्थौ संप्रधार्यैव यदि सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहम्

O lord of men! What can you tell them, except returning their share? Let the lords of the earth who are in this assembly hall speak. O bull among the kṣatriya-s! If I have spoken in accordance with dharma and artha,

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आप उनसे उनका हिस्सा लौटाने के सिवा और क्या कह सकते हैं? पृय्वी के प्रभु जो इस सभा भवन में हैं, बोलें। हे क्षत्रियों में से बैल! यदि मैंने धर्म और अर्थ के अनुसार बोला है,

प्रमुञ्चेमान्मृत्युपाशात्क्षत्रियान्क्षत्रियर्षभ प्रशाम्य भरतश्रेष्ठ मा मन्युवशमन्वगाः

if I have spoken the truth, free those kṣatriya-s from the noose of death. O best of the Bhārata lineage! Make peace. Do not come under the control of anger.

यदि मैंने सत्य कहा है तो उन क्षत्रियों को मृत्यु के पाश से मुक्त कर दो। हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! शांति बनाओ। क्रोध के वश में न आएं.

पित्र्यं तेभ्यः प्रदायांशं पाण्डवेभ्यो यथोचितम् ततः सपुत्रः सिद्धार्थो भुङ्क्ष्व भोगान्परंतप

As is proper, return to the Pāṇḍava-s their share of the ancestral kingdom. O scorcher of enemies! Be successful with your sons and enjoy the prosperity.

जैसा उचित हो, पांडवों को उनके पैतृक राज्य का हिस्सा लौटा दो। हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! अपने पुत्रों के साथ सफल रहें और समृद्धि का आनंद लें।

अजातशत्रुं जानीषे स्थितं धर्मे सतां सदा सपुत्रे त्वयि वृत्तिं च वर्तते यां नराधिप

O lord of men! You know that Ajātaśatru is always established in the dharma of the righteous and you know his conduct towards you and your sons.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आप जानते हैं कि अजातशत्रु हमेशा धर्मियों के धर्म में स्थापित होता है और आप अपने और अपने पुत्रों के प्रति उसके आचरण को जानते हैं।

दाहितश्च निरस्तश्च त्वामेवोपाश्रितः पुनः इन्द्रप्रस्थं त्वयैवासौ सपुत्रेण विवासितः

There was an attempt to burn him. There was an attempt to exile him. But he has returned again to you as a refuge. You and your sons banished him to Indraprastha.

उसे जलाने की कोशिश की गई. उन्हें निर्वासित करने का प्रयास किया गया। परन्तु वह फिर शरण बनकर तुम्हारे पास लौट आया है। आपने और आपके पुत्रों ने उसे इन्द्रप्रस्थ में निर्वासित कर दिया।

स तत्र निवसन्सर्वान्वशमानीय पार्थिवान् त्वन्मुखानकरोद्राजन्न च त्वामत्यवर्तत

Dwelling there, he brought all the lords of the earth under his suzerainty. O king! But he has always placed you above him and has never crossed you.

वहाँ रहकर उसने पृथ्वी के सभी राजाओं को अपने अधीन कर लिया। हे राजा! लेकिन उसने हमेशा तुम्हें अपने से ऊपर रखा है और कभी भी तुमसे आगे नहीं बढ़ा।

तस्यैवं वर्तमानस्य सौबलेन जिहीर्षता राष्ट्राणि धनधान्यं च प्रयुक्तः परमोपधिः

When he conducted himself in this way, Saubala conquered him through ultimate deceit, because he coveted the kingdom, the riches and the grain.

जब उसने खुद को इस तरह से संचालित किया, तो सौबाला ने उसे अत्यधिक धोखे से जीत लिया, क्योंकि उसने राज्य, धन और अनाज का लालच किया था।

स तामवस्थां संप्राप्य कृष्णां प्रेक्ष्य सभागताम् क्षत्रधर्मादमेयात्मा नाकम्पत युधिष्ठिरः

When he was reduced to such a state, Kṛṣṇā was brought to the assembly hall. But Yudhiṣṭhira, whose soul is unfathomable, did not swerve from the dharma of kṣatriya-s.

जब उनकी ऐसी हालत हो गई, तो कृष्ण को सभा भवन में लाया गया। लेकिन युधिष्ठिर, जिनकी आत्मा अथाह है, क्षत्रिय-धर्म से विमुख नहीं हुए।

अहं तु तव तेषां च श्रेय इच्छामि भारत धर्मादर्थात्सुखाच्चैव मा राजन्नीनशः प्रजाः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! I wish their welfare and yours, dharma, artha and happiness. O king! Do not destroy your subjects.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मैं उनके और आपके कल्याण, धर्म, अर्थ और सुख की कामना करता हूं।' हे राजा! अपनी प्रजा को नष्ट मत करो.

अनर्थमर्थं मन्वाना अर्थं वानर्थमात्मनः लोभेऽतिप्रसृतान्पुत्रान्निगृह्णीष्व विशां पते

O lord of the earth! Control your sons, who have overstepped the limits of greed and think that which is not artha to be artha, and that which is artha to be not artha.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! अपने पुत्रों पर नियंत्रण रखें, जो लालच की सीमा लांघ चुके हैं और सोचते हैं कि जो अर्थ नहीं है वह अर्थ है, और जो अर्थ है वह अर्थ नहीं है।

स्थिताः शुश्रूषितुं पार्थाः स्थिता योद्धुमरिंदमाः यत्ते पथ्यतमं राजंस्तस्मिंस्तिष्ठ परंतप

The Pārtha-s, the destroyers of enemies, are stationed, ready to serve you and ready to fight. O king! O scorcher of enemies! Station yourself in what you perceive to be healthy."

शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले पार्थ आपकी सेवा में और युद्ध के लिए तत्पर हैं। हे राजा! हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! आप जो स्वस्थ मानते हैं उसमें स्वयं को स्थापित करें।"

तद्वाक्यं पार्थिवाः सर्वे हृदयैः समपूजयन् न तत्र कश्चिद्वक्तुं हि वाचं प्राक्रामदग्रतः

In their hearts, all the lords of the earth welcomed these words. But no one present ventured to speak first.

पृथ्वी के सभी राजाओं ने अपने हृदय में इन शब्दों का स्वागत किया। लेकिन वहां मौजूद किसी भी व्यक्ति ने पहले बोलने की हिम्मत नहीं की.
