भीष्म उवाच ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ मातरं वीरमातरम् अभिगम्योपसंगृह्य दाशेयीमिदमब्रुवम्

Bhīṣma said: "O best of the Bhārata lineage! I approached my mother, the mother of brave ones and saluting her, told the daughter of the Daśā lineage,

भीष्म ने कहा: "हे भरत वंश के श्रेष्ठ! मैं अपनी माँ, जो वीरों की माँ है, के पास गया और उन्हें नमस्कार करते हुए, दशा वंश की पुत्री से कहा,

इमाः काशिपतेः कन्या मया निर्जित्य पार्थिवान् विचित्रवीर्यस्य कृते वीर्यशुल्का उपार्जिताः

"I have vanquished the kings and have obtained these daughters of the lord of Kāśi for Vicitravīrya. I have abducted them in accordance with the norms of vīryaśulka."

"मैंने राजाओं को परास्त किया है और काशी के स्वामी की इन पुत्रियों को विचित्रवीर्य के लिए प्राप्त किया है। मैंने वीर्यशूल्क के नियमों के अनुसार उनका अपहरण किया है।"

ततो मूर्धन्युपाघ्राय पर्यश्रुनयना नृप आह सत्यवती हृष्टा दिष्ट्या पुत्र जितं त्वया

O king! She inhaled the fragrance of my head. With her eyes filled with tears, Satyavatī told me, "O son! It is through good fortune that you have obtained victory."

हे राजा! उसने मेरे सिर की खुशबू महसूस की. सत्यवती ने आँसुओं से भरी आँखों से मुझसे कहा, "हे पुत्र! सौभाग्य से ही तुम्हें विजय प्राप्त हुई है।"

सत्यवत्यास्त्वनुमते विवाहे समुपस्थिते उवाच वाक्यं सव्रीडा ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः सुता

With Satyavatī's permission, a date was fixed for the marriage. The eldest daughter of the lord of Kāśi spoke these bashful words.

सत्यवती की अनुमति से विवाह की तिथि निश्चित कर दी गई। काशी के स्वामी की ज्येष्ठ कन्या ने ये लज्जास्पद वचन कहे।

भीष्म त्वमसि धर्मज्ञः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः श्रुत्वा च धर्म्यं वचनं मह्यं कर्तुमिहार्हसि

"O Bhīṣma! You are knowledgeable about dharma and you are skilled in all the sacred texts. You should listen to my words and then act towards me in accordance with dharma.

"हे भीष्म! आप धर्म के जानकार हैं और आप सभी पवित्र ग्रंथों में कुशल हैं। आपको मेरी बातें सुननी चाहिए और फिर मेरे प्रति धर्म के अनुसार व्यवहार करना चाहिए।

मया शाल्वपतिः पूर्वं मनसाभिवृतो वरः तेन चास्मि वृता पूर्वं रहस्यविदिते पितुः

In my mind, I had earlier chosen the lord of Śālva as my groom. Without this being known to my father, he had also chosen me in secret.

मैंने पहले ही अपने मन में शाल्व देवता को अपने वर के रूप में चुन लिया था। यह बात मेरे पिता को पता चले बिना ही उन्होंने मुझे भी गुप्त रूप से चुन लिया था.

कथं मामन्यकामां त्वं राजञ्शास्त्रमधीत्य वै वासयेथा गृहे भीष्म कौरवः सन्विशेषतः

I desire someone else. O king! O Bhīṣma! Especially because you are a Kaurava, how can you, who have studied the sacred texts, make someone like that live in this household?

मुझे किसी और की चाहत है. हे राजा! हे भीष्म! खासकर इसलिए कि आप कौरव हैं, आप, जिन्होंने पवित्र ग्रंथों का अध्ययन किया है, ऐसे किसी व्यक्ति को इस घर में कैसे रख सकते हैं?

एतद्बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य मनसा भरतर्षभ यत्क्षमं ते महाबाहो तदिहारब्धुमर्हसि

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Now that you know this, make up your mind about what should be done. O mighty-armed one! You should do that which is appropriate.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! अब जब आप यह जान गए हैं, तो अपना मन बना लें कि क्या किया जाना चाहिए। हे महाबाहु! आपको वही करना चाहिए जो उचित हो.

स मां प्रतीक्षते व्यक्तं शाल्वराजो विशां पते कृपां कुरु महाबाहो मयि धर्मभृतां वर त्वं हि सत्यव्रतो वीर पृथिव्यामिति नः श्रुतम्

O lord of the earth! It is evident that King Śālva is waiting for me. O mighty-armed one! O supreme among those who uphold dharma! You should take pity on me. O brave one! We have heard that you are famous in this world for being truthful to your vows."

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! यह स्पष्ट है कि राजा शाल्व मेरी ही प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं। हे महाबाहु! हे धर्म का पालन करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ! आपको मुझ पर दया करनी चाहिए. हे वीर! हमने सुना है कि आप अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं के प्रति सच्चे होने के कारण इस संसार में प्रसिद्ध हैं।”
