शल्य उवाच अथ संचिन्तयानस्य देवराजस्य धीमतः नहुषस्य वधोपायं लोकपालैः सहैव तैः तपस्वी तत्र भगवानगस्त्यः प्रत्यदृश्यत

Śalya said: When the intelligent king of the gods was thinking about a means for killing Nāhuṣa, together with the guardians of the world, the illustrious ascetic Āgastya appeared.

शल्य ने कहा: जब देवताओं के बुद्धिमान राजा विश्व के अभिभावकों के साथ मिलकर नहुष को मारने के उपाय के बारे में सोच रहे थे, तो प्रसिद्ध तपस्वी अगस्त्य प्रकट हुए।

सोऽब्रवीदर्च्य देवेन्द्रं दिष्ट्या वै वर्धते भवान् विश्वरूपविनाशेन वृत्रासुरवधेन च

He showed homage to Indra of the gods and said, "It is fortunate that you have gained in strength. Viśvarūpa has been destroyed and the āsura Vṛtra has been slain.

उन्होंने देवताओं के इंद्र को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की और कहा, "यह सौभाग्य की बात है कि आपको शक्ति प्राप्त हुई है। विश्वरूप नष्ट हो गया है और असुर वृत्र मारा गया है।"

दिष्ट्या च नहुषो भ्रष्टो देवराज्यात्पुरंदर दिष्ट्या हतारिं पश्यामि भवन्तं बलसूदन

O Purandara! It is through good fortune too that Nāhuṣa has been dislodged from the kingdom of the gods. O destroyer of Bāla! It is through good fortune that I look upon you now."

हे पुरंदर! यह भी सौभाग्य ही है कि नहुष को देवताओं के राज्य से निष्कासित कर दिया गया है। हे बाला को नष्ट करने वाले! यह सौभाग्य ही है कि मैं अब तुम पर दृष्टि डाल रहा हूँ।"

इन्द्र उवाच स्वागतं ते महर्षेऽस्तु प्रीतोऽहं दर्शनात्तव पाद्यमाचमनीयं च गामर्घ्यं च प्रतीच्छ मे

Indra replied: "O maharṣi! Welcome. I am happy to see you. Please accept from me water for washing the feet, water for washing the mouth, the cow and the ārghya."

इंद्र ने उत्तर दिया: "हे महर्षि! आपका स्वागत है। मैं आपको देखकर प्रसन्न हूं। कृपया मुझसे पैर धोने के लिए जल, मुंह धोने के लिए जल, गाय और अर्घ्य स्वीकार करें।"

शल्य उवाच पूजितं चोपविष्टं तमासने मुनिसत्तमम् पर्यपृच्छत देवेशः प्रहृष्टो ब्राह्मणर्षभम्

Śalya said: "Having been thus honoured, that supreme of sages, bull among brāhmana-s, seated himself and the lord of the gods happily asked him,

शल्य ने कहा: "इस प्रकार सम्मानित होने के बाद, ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ, ब्राह्मणों में बैल, खुद बैठ गए और देवताओं के भगवान ने खुशी से उनसे पूछा,

एतदिच्छामि भगवन्कथ्यमानं द्विजोत्तम परिभ्रष्टः कथं स्वर्गान्नहुषः पापनिश्चयः

O illustrious one! O supreme among brāhmana-s! I wish to hear from you how Nāhuṣa, whose mind was set on evil, has been dislodged from heaven."

हे महामहिम! हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! मैं आपसे यह सुनना चाहता हूँ कि नहुष, जिसका मन बुराई में लगा हुआ था, किस प्रकार स्वर्ग से निकाला गया है।"

अगस्त्य उवाच शृणु शक्र प्रियं वाक्यं यथा राजा दुरात्मवान् स्वर्गाद्भ्रष्टो दुराचारो नहुषो बलदर्पितः

Āgastya said: O Śākra! Listen to the pleasant news of how the evil-souled and evil-acting King Nāhuṣa, insolent because of his strength, has been dislodged from heaven.

अगस्त्य ने कहा: हे शक्र! अपने बल के कारण उद्दंड दुष्टात्मा तथा दुष्ट आचरण करने वाले राजा नहुष को किस प्रकार स्वर्ग से अपदस्थ कर दिया गया है, इसका सुखद समाचार सुनो।

श्रमार्तास्तु वहन्तस्तं नहुषं पापकारिणम् देवर्षयो महाभागास्तथा ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमलाः पप्रच्छुः संशयं देव नहुषं जयतां वर

The immensely fortunate devarṣi-s and the unblemished brahmarṣi-s were exhausted at having to bear the evil-acting Nāhuṣa. O god! O supreme among victorious ones! They posed a question to Nāhuṣa.

अत्यंत भाग्यशाली देवर्षि और निष्कलंक ब्रह्मर्षि दुष्ट आचरण करने वाले नहुष को सहन करके थक गए थे। रब्बा बे! हे विजयी जनों में श्रेष्ठ! उन्होंने नहुष से एक प्रश्न पूछा।

य इमे ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्ता मन्त्रा वै प्रोक्षणे गवाम् एते प्रमाणं भवत उताहो नेति वासव नहुषो नेति तानाह तमसा मूढचेतनः

"Brahmā has chanted mantra-s that should be used when cows are sprinkled. Are these accurate?" O Vāsava! This is the question they asked. Nāhuṣa's senses were confounded because of darkness and he replied in the negative.

"ब्रह्मा ने मंत्रों का जाप किया है जिनका उपयोग गायों को छिड़कते समय किया जाना चाहिए। क्या ये सटीक हैं?" हे वासव! उन्होंने यही सवाल पूछा था. अंधकार के कारण नहुष की इंद्रियाँ भ्रमित हो गईं और उसने नकारात्मक उत्तर दिया।

ऋषय ऊचुः अधर्मे संप्रवृत्तस्त्वं धर्मं न प्रतिपद्यसे प्रमाणमेतदस्माकं पूर्वं प्रोक्तं महर्षिभिः

The riṣi-s said: "You are engaged in adharma. You do not know dharma. For us, they are accurate, because the maharṣi-s have uttered them earlier."

ऋषियों ने कहा: "तुम अधर्म में लगे हो। तुम धर्म को नहीं जानते। हमारे लिए, वे सटीक हैं, क्योंकि महर्षियों ने उन्हें पहले कहा है।"

अगस्त्य उवाच ततो विवदमानः स मुनिभिः सह वासव अथ मामस्पृशन्मूर्ध्नि पादेनाधर्मपीडितः

Āgastya said: O Vāsava! While he was arguing with the sages, oppressed by adharma, this man touched my head with his foot.

अगस्त्य ने कहा: हे वासव! जब वह अधर्म से पीड़ित होकर ऋषियों से विवाद कर रहा था, तब इस मनुष्य ने अपने पैर से मेरे सिर को छुआ।

तेनाभूद्धततेजाः स निःश्रीकश्च शचीपते ततस्तमहमाविग्नमवोचं भयपीडितम्

O consort of Śacī! Because of this, he lost his energy and his prosperity. I told the anxious one who was oppressed by fear,

हे शची की पत्नी! इसके कारण उन्होंने अपनी ऊर्जा और समृद्धि खो दी। मैंने उस चिन्तित व्यक्ति से, जो भय से पीड़ित था, कहा,

यस्मात्पूर्वैः कृतं ब्रह्म ब्रह्मर्षिभिरनुष्ठितम् अदुष्टं दूषयसि वै यच्च मूर्ध्न्यस्पृशः पदा

"This was undertaken by Brahmā earlier and was observed by the brahmarṣi-s. They should not be censured and you have censured them. You have touched my head with your foot.

"यह पहले ब्रह्मा द्वारा किया गया था और ब्रह्मर्षियों द्वारा देखा गया था। उनकी निंदा नहीं की जानी चाहिए और आपने उनकी निंदा की है। आपने अपने पैर से मेरे सिर को छुआ है।

यच्चापि त्वमृषीन्मूढ ब्रह्मकल्पान्दुरासदान् वाहान्कृत्वा वाहयसि तेन स्वर्गाद्धतप्रभः

O stupid one! The riṣi-s are like Brahmā and are unassailable. You have made them carry around your vehicle. Therefore, you will lose your brilliance and will be dislodged from heaven.

अरे मूर्ख! ऋषि ब्रह्मा के समान हैं और अजेय हैं। तुमने उन्हें अपने वाहन में घुमाया है। अत: तुम अपनी तेजस्विता खो दोगे और स्वर्ग से अपदस्थ हो जाओगे।

ध्वंस पाप परिभ्रष्टः क्षीणपुण्यो महीतलम् दश वर्षसहस्राणि सर्परूपधरो महान् विचरिष्यसि पूर्णेषु पुनः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि

O evil one! With all your merits exhausted, you will be dislodged and will descend on earth. You will roam for ten thousand years in the form of a giant serpent. After this period is over, you will return again to heaven."

हे दुष्ट! तुम्हारे सारे पुण्य समाप्त हो जाने पर तुम अपदस्थ हो जाओगे और पृथ्वी पर अवतरित हो जाओगे। तुम विशाल सर्प के रूप में दस हजार वर्ष तक घूमोगे। यह अवधि समाप्त होने पर तुम पुनः स्वर्ग लौट आओगे।”

एवं भ्रष्टो दुरात्मा स देवराज्यादरिंदम दिष्ट्या वर्धामहे शक्र हतो ब्राह्मणकण्टकः

O destroyer of enemies! Thus, the evil-souled one was dislodged from the kingdom of heaven. O Śākra! It is through good fortune that the thorn of brāhmana-s has been uprooted and we are flourishing.

हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! इस प्रकार, दुष्ट आत्मा को स्वर्ग के राज्य से बेदखल कर दिया गया। हे शक्र! यह सौभाग्य ही है कि ब्राह्मणों का कांटा उखड़ गया है और हम फल-फूल रहे हैं।

त्रिविष्टपं प्रपद्यस्व पाहि लोकाञ्शचीपते जितेन्द्रियो जितामित्रः स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः

O consort of Śacī! Return to heaven and protect the worlds. Conquer your senses and conquer your enemies. Be praised by the maharṣi-s."

हे शची की पत्नी! स्वर्ग लौटें और संसार की रक्षा करें। अपनी इंद्रियों पर विजय प्राप्त करें और अपने शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त करें। महर्षियों द्वारा प्रशंसा प्राप्त करें।"

शल्य उवाच ततो देवा भृशं तुष्टा महर्षिगणसंवृताः पितरश्चैव यक्षाश्च भुजगा राक्षसास्तथा

Śalya said: The gods, surrounded by the masses of maharṣi-s, were extremely satisfied. So were the ancestors, the yakṣa-s, the serpents, the rākṣasa-s,

शल्य ने कहा: महर्षियों की भीड़ से घिरे देवता अत्यंत संतुष्ट थे। ऐसे ही थे पूर्वज, यक्ष, नाग, राक्षस,

गन्धर्वा देवकन्याश्च सर्वे चाप्सरसां गणाः सरांसि सरितः शैलाः सागराश्च विशां पते

the gāndharva-s, the maidens of the gods and all the masses of āpsara-s. O lord of the earth! The lakes, rivers, mountains and oceans,

गंधर्व, देवताओं की दासियाँ और अप्सराओं की सारी भीड़। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! झीलें, नदियाँ, पहाड़ और महासागर,

उपगम्याब्रुवन्सर्वे दिष्ट्या वर्धसि शत्रुहन् हतश्च नहुषः पापो दिष्ट्यागस्त्येन धीमता दिष्ट्या पापसमाचारः कृतः सर्पो महीतले

all of them approached and said, "O destroyer of enemies! It is through good fortune that you are flourishing. It is through good fortune that the evil Nāhuṣa has been dislodged by the wise Āgastya. It is through good fortune that the one who was evil in his conduct has become a snake on the face of the earth."

उन सभी ने पास आकर कहा, "हे शत्रुओं के नाश करने वाले! यह अच्छे भाग्य के माध्यम से है कि आप फल-फूल रहे हैं। यह अच्छे भाग्य के माध्यम से है कि दुष्ट नहुष को बुद्धिमान अगस्त्य ने उखाड़ फेंका है। यह अच्छे भाग्य के माध्यम से है कि जो अपने आचरण में बुरा था वह पृथ्वी के चेहरे पर एक साँप बन गया है।"
