वैशंपायन उवाच ततः सत्यवती दीना कृपणा पुत्रगृद्धिनी पुत्रस्य कृत्वा कार्याणि स्नुषाभ्यां सह भारत

Vaiśampāyana said: Satyavatī was miserable and unfortunate and grieved over her son. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! With her daughters-in-law, she performed the funeral rites for her son.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: सत्यवती दुखी और दुर्भाग्यशाली थी और अपने बेटे से दुखी थी। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने अपनी बहुओं के साथ मिलकर अपने बेटे का अंतिम संस्कार किया।

धर्मं च पितृवंशं च मातृवंशं च मानिनी प्रसमीक्ष्य महाभागा गाङ्गेयं वाक्यमब्रवीत्

Then the illustrious one turned her mind to dharma and the preservation of the paternal and maternal lineages.

तब उस महान महिला ने अपना मन धर्म और पैतृक और मातृ वंश के संरक्षण की ओर लगाया।

शंतनोर्धर्मनित्यस्य कौरव्यस्य यशस्विनः त्वयि पिण्डश्च कीर्तिश्च संतानं च प्रतिष्ठितम्

The immensely fortunate one told Gāṅga's son, "The perpetuation of Śāntanu's dharma, the lineage and fame of the Kuru dynasty, the deeds of progeny and the offering of oblations to ancestors is now vested in you.

अत्यंत भाग्यशाली व्यक्ति ने गंगा के पुत्र से कहा, "शांतनु के धर्म को कायम रखना, कुरु वंश की वंशावली और प्रसिद्धि, संतान के कार्य और पूर्वजों को तर्पण देना अब आप में निहित है।

यथा कर्म शुभं कृत्वा स्वर्गोपगमनं ध्रुवम् यथा चायुर्ध्रुवं सत्ये त्वयि धर्मस्तथा ध्रुवः

Just as the attainment of heaven is certain when one performs good deeds, just as a long life is certain when it is based on truth, it is certain that dharma cannot be separated from you.

जिस प्रकार अच्छे कर्म करने पर स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति निश्चित होती है, जिस प्रकार सत्य पर आधारित होने पर लंबी आयु निश्चित होती है, उसी प्रकार यह भी निश्चित है कि धर्म को आपसे अलग नहीं किया जा सकता है।

वेत्थ धर्मांश्च धर्मज्ञ समासेनेतरेण च विविधास्त्वं श्रुतीर्वेत्थ वेत्थ वेदांश्च सर्वशः

You know dharma and its parts. Dharma is established in you. You are learned in all the sacred texts, the Veda-s and the Vedāṅga-s.

आप धर्म और उसके अंगों को जानते हैं। धर्म आपमें स्थापित हो गया है। आप सभी पवित्र ग्रंथों, वेदों और वेदांगों के विद्वान हैं।

व्यवस्थानं च ते धर्मे कुलाचारं च लक्षये प्रतिपत्तिं च कृच्छ्रेषु शुक्राङ्गिरसयोरिव

In preserving the customs and virtue of the family and in deciding what should be done in times of distress, you are like Śukra or Āṅgirasa's son.

परिवार के रीति-रिवाजों और गुणों को संरक्षित करने और संकट के समय क्या करना चाहिए, इसका निर्णय लेने में, आप शुक्र या अंगिरस के पुत्र की तरह हैं।

तस्मात्सुभृशमाश्वस्य त्वयि धर्मभृतां वर कार्ये त्वां विनियोक्ष्यामि तच्छ्रुत्वा कर्तुमर्हसि

O supreme among those who hold up dharma! Therefore, I am depending on you. I will ask you to perform an act. When you have heard it, please do it.

हे धर्म को धारण करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ! इसलिए मैं आप पर निर्भर हूं. मैं तुमसे एक अभिनय करने के लिए कहूँगा। जब आपने इसे सुन लिया है, तो कृपया इसे करें।

मम पुत्रस्तव भ्राता वीर्यवान्सुप्रियश्च ते बाल एव गतः स्वर्गमपुत्रः पुरुषर्षभ

O bull among men! My valorous son was your brother and you loved him a lot. He has ascended to heaven, though but a child.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! मेरा वीर पुत्र तुम्हारा भाई था और तुम उससे बहुत प्रेम करती थी। वह स्वर्ग में चढ़ गया है, हालाँकि वह एक बच्चा है।

इमे महिष्यौ भ्रातुस्ते काशिराजसुते शुभे रूपयौवनसंपन्ने पुत्रकामे च भारत

Your brother's queens are the fortunate daughters of the king of Kāśi and they possess youth and beauty. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They yearn for sons.

आपके भाई की रानियाँ काशी के राजा की भाग्यशाली पुत्रियाँ हैं और वे यौवन और सौंदर्य से युक्त हैं। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्हें पुत्र की अभिलाषा रहती है।

तयोरुत्पादयापत्यं संतानाय कुलस्य नः मन्नियोगान्महाभाग धर्मं कर्तुमिहार्हसि

O immensely fortunate one! Therefore, so that the lineage continues, beget offspring on them. At my request, perform this act of dharma.

हे परम भाग्यशाली! इसलिये वंश आगे बढ़ाने के लिये तुम उनसे सन्तान उत्पन्न करो। मेरे अनुरोध पर तुम यह धर्म का कार्य करो।

राज्ये चैवाभिषिच्यस्व भारताननुशाधि च दारांश्च कुरु धर्मेण मा निमज्जीः पितामहान्

Instate yourself on the throne and rule over the kingdom of the Bhārata-s. In accordance with dharma, take a wife and do not immerse your ancestors in hell."

अपने आप को सिंहासन पर स्थापित करें और भरत-वंश के राज्य पर शासन करें। धर्म के अनुसार, एक पत्नी ले लो और अपने पूर्वजों को नरक में मत डुबोओ।"

तथोच्यमानो मात्रा च सुहृद्भिश्च परंतपः प्रत्युवाच स धर्मात्मा धर्म्यमेवोत्तरं वचः

The conqueror of enemies was thus addressed by his mother and his friends. But the one who followed dharma replied in accordance with dharma.

शत्रुओं पर विजय पाने वाले को उसकी माँ और उसके मित्र इसी प्रकार संबोधित करते थे। लेकिन जिसने धर्म का पालन किया उसने धर्म के अनुसार ही उत्तर दिया।

असंशयं परो धर्मस्त्वया मातरुदाहृतः त्वमपत्यं प्रति च मे प्रतिज्ञां वेत्थ वै पराम्

"O mother! What you have said is certainly sanctioned by supreme dharma. But for the sake of the kingdom, you know about the vow I have taken about not having offspring.

"हे माँ! आपने जो कहा है वह निश्चित रूप से परम धर्म द्वारा स्वीकृत है। लेकिन राज्य के लिए, मैंने संतान न पैदा करने का जो व्रत लिया है, उसके बारे में आप जानती हैं।

जानासि च यथावृत्तं शुल्कहेतोस्त्वदन्तरे स सत्यवति सत्यं ते प्रतिजानाम्यहं पुनः

O Satyavatī! You also know about the price that had to be paid for you and about the occurrence thereafter. I will again repeat the truthful pledge that I then took.

हे सत्यवती! आपको यह भी पता है कि आपको इसके लिए क्या कीमत चुकानी पड़ी और उसके बाद क्या हुआ। मैं उस सच्ची प्रतिज्ञा को फिर दोहराऊंगा जो मैंने तब ली थी।

परित्यजेयं त्रैलोक्यं राज्यं देवेषु वा पुनः यद्वाप्यधिकमेताभ्यां न तु सत्यं कथंचन

I can give up the three worlds. I can also renounce the kingdom of the gods, or anything that is greater than both of these. But I can never go back on the truth.

मैं तीनों लोकों का त्याग कर सकता हूं। मैं देवताओं का राज्य या ऐसी किसी भी चीज़ का त्याग कर सकता हूँ जो इन दोनों से बढ़कर है। लेकिन मैं कभी भी सच्चाई से पीछे नहीं हट सकता.

त्यजेच्च पृथिवी गन्धमापश्च रसमात्मनः ज्योतिस्तथा त्यजेद्रूपं वायुः स्पर्शगुणं त्यजेत्

The earth can give up its fragrances, the water can give up its juices, light can give up its diverse forms, wind can give up its sense of touch,

पृथ्वी अपनी सुगंध छोड़ सकती है, जल अपना रस छोड़ सकता है, प्रकाश अपने विविध रूप छोड़ सकता है, हवा अपना स्पर्श भाव छोड़ सकती है,

प्रभां समुत्सृजेदर्को धूमकेतुस्तथोष्णताम् त्यजेच्छब्दं तथाकाशः सोमः शीतांशुतां त्यजेत्

the sun can give up its radiance, the smoke-crested flame can give up its heat, the sky can give up its sounds, the moon can give up its cool rays,

सूर्य अपनी चमक छोड़ सकता है, धुएं से भरी लौ अपनी गर्मी छोड़ सकती है, आकाश अपनी ध्वनि छोड़ सकता है, चंद्रमा अपनी ठंडी किरणें छोड़ सकता है,

विक्रमं वृत्रहा जह्याद्धर्मं जह्याच्च धर्मराट् न त्वहं सत्यमुत्स्रष्टुं व्यवसेयं कथंचन

the slayer of Vṛtra can give up his valour, the god of dharma can give up dharma, but I can never give up the truth."

वृत्र का हत्यारा अपनी वीरता छोड़ सकता है, धर्म का देवता धर्म छोड़ सकता है, लेकिन मैं सत्य कभी नहीं छोड़ सकता।"

एवमुक्ता तु पुत्रेण भूरिद्रविणतेजसा माता सत्यवती भीष्ममुवाच तदनन्तरम्

Having been thus addressed by her son, who was endowed with great energy, the mother Satyavatī then told Bhīṣma,

अपने बेटे द्वारा, जो महान ऊर्जा से संपन्न था, इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर, माँ सत्यवती ने तब भीष्म से कहा,

जानामि ते स्थितिं सत्ये परां सत्यपराक्रम इच्छन्सृजेथास्त्रीँल्लोकानन्यांस्त्वं स्वेन तेजसा

"I know that you are always established in the truth and that truth is your strength. If you wish, you can create another three worlds with your own energy.

"मैं जानता हूं कि आप सदैव सत्य में स्थापित हैं और सत्य ही आपकी शक्ति है। आप चाहें तो अपनी ऊर्जा से तीन और लोक बना सकते हैं।"

जानामि चैव सत्यं तन्मदर्थं यदभाषथाः आपद्धर्ममवेक्षस्व वह पैतामहीं धुरम्

I know that the vow of truth you took was for my sake. But you know the calamity that has now arisen and you know about dharma at such times.

मैं जानता हूं कि तुमने सत्य की शपथ मेरे लिये ली थी। परन्तु अब जो विपत्ति उत्पन्न हो गई है, उसे भी तुम जानते हो और ऐसे समय में धर्म के विषय में भी जानते हो।

यथा ते कुलतन्तुश्च धर्मश्च न पराभवेत् सुहृदश्च प्रहृष्येरंस्तथा कुरु परंतप

Also remember the duty to your ancestors. O one who is never defeated! Act in a way that dharma is not destroyed and our lineage is not broken. Do what doesn't make our friends grieve."

अपने पूर्वजों के प्रति कर्तव्य भी याद रखें। हे जो कभी पराजित नहीं होता! ऐसा आचरण करो कि धर्म नष्ट न हो और हमारा वंश टूटे नहीं। ऐसा करो जिससे हमारे दोस्तों को दुःख न हो।"

लालप्यमानां तामेवं कृपणां पुत्रगृद्धिनीम् धर्मादपेतं ब्रुवतीं भीष्मो भूयोऽब्रवीदिदम्

Having been thus repeatedly addressed by his miserable mother, who was grieving for her son, in words that represented a deviation from dharma, Bhīṣma again said,

अपनी दुखी मां द्वारा, जो अपने बेटे के लिए शोक मना रही थी, बार-बार ऐसे शब्दों में संबोधित किए जाने पर, जो धर्म से विचलन का प्रतिनिधित्व करते थे, भीष्म ने फिर से कहा,

राज्ञि धर्मानवेक्षस्व मा नः सर्वान्व्यनीनशः सत्याच्च्युतिः क्षत्रियस्य न धर्मेषु प्रशस्यते

"O queen! Look at dharma. Otherwise, you will bring all of us to ruin. The norms of dharma never praise a deviation from the truth by Kṣatriya-s.

"हे रानी! धर्म की ओर देखो। अन्यथा, तुम हम सभी को बर्बाद कर दोगी। धर्म के मानदंड कभी भी क्षत्रियों द्वारा सत्य से विचलन की प्रशंसा नहीं करते हैं।

शंतनोरपि संतानं यथा स्यादक्षयं भुवि तत्ते धर्मं प्रवक्ष्यामि क्षात्रं राज्ञि सनातनम्

O queen! In order to prevent Śāntanu's lineage from becoming extinct, I will tell you the eternal dharma of Kṣatriya-s.

हे रानी! शांतनु के वंश को लुप्त होने से बचाने के लिए मैं तुम्हें क्षत्रियों का शाश्वत धर्म बताऊंगा।

श्रुत्वा तं प्रतिपद्येथाः प्राज्ञैः सह पुरोहितैः आपद्धर्मार्थकुशलैर्लोकतन्त्रमवेक्ष्य च

Hearing this, after consulting priests and those wise ones who know about the dharma that should be followed in time of calamities, determine what is best for the welfare of the world."

यह सुनकर पुरोहितों तथा विपत्ति के समय पालन किये जाने वाले धर्म को जानने वाले बुद्धिमानों से परामर्श करके विश्व के कल्याण के लिए सर्वोत्तम क्या है, इसका निर्णय करें।”
