नारद उवाच उत्सवे वृत्तमात्रे तु त्रैलोक्याकाङ्क्षिणावुभौ मन्त्रयित्वा ततः सेनां तावाज्ञापयतां तदा

Nārada said: "When the festivities ended, the two great ones wished to conquer the three worlds.

नारद ने कहा: "जब उत्सव समाप्त हो गया, तो दोनों महान लोगों ने तीनों लोकों को जीतने की इच्छा की।

सुहृद्भिरभ्यनुज्ञातौ दैत्यवृद्धैश्च मन्त्रिभिः कृत्वा प्रास्थानिकं रात्रौ मघासु ययतुस्तदा

Having obtained the permission of their well-wishers and elders among the daitya-s, arranging their army and having sought counsel and performed the required rites, they set out in the night, when the constellation Māgha was in the ascendant.

दैत्यों के बीच अपने शुभचिंतकों और बुजुर्गों की अनुमति प्राप्त करने के बाद, अपनी सेना की व्यवस्था की और परामर्श लेने और आवश्यक अनुष्ठान करने के बाद, वे रात में निकल पड़े, जब नक्षत्र माघ लग्न में था।

गदापट्टिशधारिण्या शूलमुद्गरहस्तया प्रस्थितौ सहधर्मिण्या महत्या दैत्यसेनया

A large army of daitya-s went with them, carrying clubs, pikes, spears, all following the same dharma.

दैत्यों की एक बड़ी सेना उनके साथ चली, जो एक ही धर्म का पालन करते हुए, लाठियाँ, भाले, भाले लेकर चल रही थी।

मङ्गलैः स्तुतिभिश्चापि विजयप्रतिसंहितैः चारणैः स्तूयमानौ तु जग्मतुः परया मुदा

Cāraṇa-s sung their praises in auspicious songs that wished them victory. They set out with happiness in their hearts.

चारणों ने मंगल गीतों में उनकी स्तुति की और उनकी विजय की कामना की। वे मन में प्रसन्नता लेकर निकल पड़े।

तावन्तरिक्षमुत्पत्य दैत्यौ कामगमावुभौ देवानामेव भवनं जग्मतुर्युद्धदुर्मदौ

The two daitya-s could assume any form at will and were intoxicated at the prospect of war. They rose into the sky and went to the habitation of the gods.

दोनों दैत्य अपनी इच्छानुसार कोई भी रूप धारण कर सकते थे और युद्ध की आशंका से नशे में थे। वे आकाश में उठे और देवताओं के निवास स्थान पर चले गये।

तयोरागमनं ज्ञात्वा वरदानं च तत्प्रभोः हित्वा त्रिविष्टपं जग्मुर्ब्रह्मलोकं ततः सुराः

Knowing that they were coming and aware of the boon that they had obtained from the illustrious one, the gods fled heaven and went to Brahmā's world.

यह जानते हुए कि वे आ रहे हैं और उन्हें उस महामहिम से प्राप्त वरदान के बारे में पता था, देवता स्वर्ग से भाग गए और ब्रह्मा की दुनिया में चले गए।

ताविन्द्रलोकं निर्जित्य यक्षरक्षोगणांस्तथा खेचराण्यपि भूतानि जिग्यतुस्तीव्रविक्रमौ

With their terrible valour, they conquered Indra's world and defeated masses of yakṣa-s and rakṣas and beings that frequent the sky.

अपनी भयानक वीरता से, उन्होंने इंद्र की दुनिया पर विजय प्राप्त की और यक्षों, राक्षसों और आकाश में आने वाले प्राणियों की भीड़ को हराया।

अन्तर्भूमिगतान्नागाञ्जित्वा तौ च महासुरौ समुद्रवासिनः सर्वान्म्लेच्छजातीन्विजिग्यतुः

The two great āsura-s then vanquished the nāga-s who dwell in the interior regions of the earth, all those who live in the oceans and all the mleccha races.

फिर दो महान असुरों ने पृथ्वी के आंतरिक क्षेत्रों में रहने वाले नागों, महासागरों में रहने वाले सभी लोगों और सभी म्लेच्छ जातियों को परास्त कर दिया।

ततः सर्वां महीं जेतुमारब्धावुग्रशासनौ सैनिकांश्च समाहूय सुतीक्ष्णां वाचमूचतुः

The two who were terrible in their rule, wished to subjugate the entire earth. They summoned their soldiers and uttered these harsh words.

वे दोनों जो अपने शासन में भयानक थे, संपूर्ण पृथ्वी को अपने अधीन करना चाहते थे। उन्होंने अपने सैनिकों को बुलाया और ये कठोर शब्द कहे।

राजर्षयो महायज्ञैर्हव्यकव्यैर्द्विजातयः तेजो बलं च देवानां वर्धयन्ति श्रियं तथा

With their great sacrifices and offerings, the rājarṣi-s and brāhmana-s increase the energy, strength and prosperity of the gods.

राजर्षि और ब्राह्मण अपने महान यज्ञों और भेंटों से देवताओं की ऊर्जा, शक्ति और समृद्धि बढ़ाते हैं।

तेषामेवं प्रवृद्धानां सर्वेषामसुरद्विषाम् संभूय सर्वैरस्माभिः कार्यः सर्वात्मना वधः

Because of these acts, they cause injury to the āsura-s. Together, we must attack and completely destroy them.

इन कृत्यों के कारण, वे असुरों को चोट पहुँचाते हैं। हमें मिलकर हमला करना चाहिए और उन्हें पूरी तरह से नष्ट कर देना चाहिए।'

एवं सर्वान्समादिश्य पूर्वतीरे महोदधेः क्रूरां मतिं समास्थाय जग्मतुः सर्वतोमुखम्

Having thus ordered them on the eastern shores of the great ocean, they set out in all directions with this cruel resolution in mind.

इस प्रकार महान महासागर के पूर्वी तट पर उन्हें आदेश देकर, वे मन में यह क्रूर संकल्प लेकर सभी दिशाओं में निकल पड़े।

यज्ञैर्यजन्ते ये केचिद्याजयन्ति च ये द्विजाः तान्सर्वान्प्रसभं दृष्ट्वा बलिनौ जघ्नतुस्तदा

The two powerful ones killed those who sacrificed and brāhmana-s who officiated at sacrifices, wherever they were seen.

उन दोनों शक्तिशाली लोगों ने जहां भी देखा, यज्ञ करने वालों और यज्ञ करने वाले ब्राह्मणों को मार डाला।

आश्रमेष्वग्निहोत्राणि ऋषीणां भावितात्मनाम् गृहीत्वा प्रक्षिपन्त्यप्सु विश्रब्धाः सैनिकास्तयोः

In hermitages of riṣi-s who had controlled their souls, their soldiers grasped the sacrificial fires and flung them irreverently away.

ऋषियों के आश्रमों में, जिन्होंने अपनी आत्मा पर नियंत्रण कर लिया था, उनके सैनिकों ने यज्ञ की अग्नि को पकड़ लिया और उन्हें अनादरपूर्वक दूर फेंक दिया।

तपोधनैश्च ये शापाः क्रुद्धैरुक्ता महात्मभिः नाक्रामन्ति तयोस्तेऽपि वरदानेन जृम्भतोः

And the curses which are said by the great men who are angry with the rich in austerities, even those who yawn by the gift of a boon.

तथा वे शाप जो तपश्चर्या के धनी तथा वरदान से उबासी लेने वाले महापुरुषों द्वारा क्रोधित होकर कहे जाते हैं।

नाक्रामन्ति यदा शापा बाणा मुक्ताः शिलास्विव नियमांस्तदा परित्यज्य व्यद्रवन्त द्विजातयः

Because of the boon granted to them, the curses of the great-souled and angry ascetics had no effect. When the brāhmana-s saw that their curses had no effect, like when arrows strike stone, they gave up their vows and fled in all directions.

उन्हें मिले वरदान के कारण महात्मा और क्रोधी तपस्वियों के शाप का कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा। जब ब्राह्मणों ने देखा कि उनके श्राप का पत्थर पर तीर की तरह कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता, तो उन्होंने अपनी प्रतिज्ञा त्याग दी और सभी दिशाओं में भाग गये।

पृथिव्यां ये तपःसिद्धा दान्ताः शमपरायणाः तयोर्भयाद्दुद्रुवुस्ते वैनतेयादिवोरगाः

Like snakes fleeing at the approach of Vinatā's son, those on earth who were successful in austerities and were self-controlled and calm, ran away.

विनता के पुत्र के आते ही साँपों के भागने की भाँति पृथ्वी पर जो लोग तपस्या में सफल थे तथा संयमी तथा शान्त थे, वे भाग गये।

मथितैराश्रमैर्भग्नैर्विकीर्णकलशस्रुवैः शून्यमासीज्जगत्सर्वं कालेनेव हतं यथा

All the hermitages were destroyed, the pots and ladles were broken and scattered. The entire universe was empty, as if it was the time of final destruction.

सारे आश्रम नष्ट कर दिये गये, बर्तन और करछुल टूट कर बिखर गये। संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड खाली था, मानो यह अंतिम विनाश का समय हो।

राजर्षिभिरदृश्यद्भिरृषिभिश्च महासुरौ उभौ विनिश्चयं कृत्वा विकुर्वाते वधैषिणौ

When the rājarṣi-s and riṣi-s disappeared into hiding, the great āsura-s united in their decision to kill.

जब राजर्षि और ऋषि छिप गए, तो महान असुर हत्या करने के अपने निर्णय में एकजुट हो गए।

प्रभिन्नकरटौ मत्तौ भूत्वा कुञ्जररूपिणौ संलीनानपि दुर्गेषु निन्यतुर्यमसादनम्

They changed their forms and assumed ones of mad, rutting elephants with their temples oozing, and sent those who were in inaccessible regions to Yāma's abode.

उन्होंने अपना रूप बदल लिया और अपने कनपटी से खून बहने वाले पागल, उत्पाती हाथियों का रूप धारण कर लिया, और जो लोग दुर्गम क्षेत्रों में थे उन्हें यम के निवास पर भेज दिया।

सिंहौ भूत्वा पुनर्व्याघ्रौ पुनश्चान्तर्हितावुभौ तैस्तैरुपायैस्तौ क्रूरावृषीन्दृष्ट्वा निजघ्नतुः

Sometimes they became lions and yet again, tigers. They also became invisible. With these forms, they slaughtered the riṣi-s wherever they found them.

कभी-कभी वे शेर बन जाते थे और फिर बाघ। वे भी अदृश्य हो गये. इन रूपों के साथ, उन्होंने जहां कहीं भी ऋषियों को पाया, उनका वध कर दिया।

निवृत्तयज्ञस्वाध्याया प्रणष्टनृपतिद्विजा उत्सन्नोत्सवयज्ञा च बभूव वसुधा तदा

Sacrifices and studying ceased and the brāhmana-s were exterminated. The earth bereft of festivals and sacrifices cried out in fear.

यज्ञ और अध्ययन बंद हो गये और ब्राह्मणों का सफाया हो गया। उत्सवों और बलिदानों से रहित पृथ्वी भय से चिल्ला उठी।

हाहाभूता भयार्ता च निवृत्तविपणापणा निवृत्तदेवकार्या च पुण्योद्वाहविवर्जिता

All buying and selling ended. The worship of the gods was stopped. Sacred rites and marriages were not observed.

सारी खरीद-फरोख्त ख़त्म हो गई. देवताओं की पूजा बंद कर दी गई। पवित्र संस्कारों और विवाहों का पालन नहीं किया जाता था।

निवृत्तकृषिगोरक्षा विध्वस्तनगराश्रमा अस्थिकङ्कालसंकीर्णा भूर्बभूवोग्रदर्शना

Agriculture and the tending of cattle ended. Cities and hermitages were destroyed. Strewn with bones and skeletons, the earth was terrible to behold.

कृषि और मवेशियों की देखभाल समाप्त हो गई। नगर और आश्रम नष्ट हो गये। हड्डियों और कंकालों से बिखरी धरती देखने में भयानक थी।

निवृत्तपितृकार्यं च निर्वषट्कारमङ्गलम् जगत्प्रतिभयाकारं दुष्प्रेक्ष्यमभवत्तदा

Ceremonies for the ancestors were no longer observed. The sacred chants ceased. The universe was terrible and loathsome to behold.

पूर्वजों के लिए समारोह अब नहीं मनाए जाते थे। पवित्र मंत्र बंद हो गये। ब्रह्माण्ड देखने में भयानक और घृणित था।

चन्द्रादित्यौ ग्रहास्तारा नक्षत्राणि दिवौकसः जग्मुर्विषादं तत्कर्म दृष्ट्वा सुन्दोपसुन्दयोः

On witnessing these acts of Sunda and Upasunda, the moon, the sun, the planets, the stars, the constellations and the dwellers of heaven were depressed.

सुंद और उपसुंद के इन कृत्यों को देखकर चंद्रमा, सूर्य, ग्रह, तारे, नक्षत्र और स्वर्ग के निवासी उदास हो गए।

एवं सर्वा दिशो दैत्यौ जित्वा क्रूरेण कर्मणा निःसपत्नौ कुरुक्षेत्रे निवेशमभिचक्रतुः

Thus subjugating all the directions with their terrible acts, the two daitya-s lived in Kurukṣetra, after vanquishing every enemy."

इस प्रकार अपने भयानक कृत्यों से सभी दिशाओं को अपने अधीन कर, प्रत्येक शत्रु को परास्त करने के बाद, दोनों दैत्य-कुरुक्षेत्र में रहने लगे।
