नारद उवाच शृणु मे विस्तरेणेममितिहासं पुरातनम् भ्रातृभीः सहितः पार्थ यथावृत्तं युधिष्ठिर

Nārada said: "O Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Pṛthā! Then together with your brothers, listen to this ancient account, exactly as it happened.

नारद ने कहा: "हे पृथा के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर! फिर अपने भाइयों के साथ इस प्राचीन वृत्तांत को ठीक वैसे ही सुनो जैसे यह हुआ था।

महासुरस्यान्ववाये हिरण्यकशिपोः पुरा निकुम्भो नाम दैत्येन्द्रस्तेजस्वी बलवानभूत्

In ancient times, in the great āsura Hiraṇyakaśipu's lineage, there was a powerful and energetic lord of the daitya-s named Nikumba.

प्राचीन काल में, महान असुर हिरण्यकशिपु के वंश में, निकुम्बा नामक दैत्यों का एक शक्तिशाली और ऊर्जावान स्वामी था।

तस्य पुत्रौ महावीर्यौ जातौ भीमपराक्रमौ सहान्योन्येन भुञ्जाते विनान्योन्यं न गच्छतः

He had two immensely valorous sons who were terrible in their prowess. They never ate unless they were together and never went anywhere without each other.

उसके दो अत्यंत वीर पुत्र थे जो अपने पराक्रम में भयानक थे। जब तक वे एक साथ न हों, उन्होंने कभी खाना नहीं खाया और एक-दूसरे के बिना कहीं भी नहीं गए।

अन्योन्यस्य प्रियकरावन्योन्यस्य प्रियंवदौ एकशीलसमाचारौ द्विधैवैकं यथा कृतौ

They always did what was pleasurable to the other and always spoke pleasantly to the other. They were similar in behaviour and conduct; like one divided into two.

वे हमेशा वही करते थे जो एक-दूसरे को अच्छा लगता था और हमेशा दूसरे से सुखद बातें करते थे। वे व्यवहार और आचरण में समान थे; जैसे एक दो में बंट गया हो.

तौ विवृद्धौ महावीर्यौ कार्येष्वप्येकनिश्चयौ त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय समास्थायैकनिश्चयम्

Similar in action and inclination, they grew up as immensely valorous and adopted the identical resolution of conquering the three worlds.

कार्य और प्रवृत्ति में समान होने के कारण, वे अत्यंत वीर बन गए और तीनों लोकों को जीतने का एक ही संकल्प अपनाया।

कृत्वा दीक्षां गतौ विन्ध्यं तत्रोग्रं तेपतुस्तपः तौ तु दीर्घेण कालेन तपोयुक्तौ बभूवतुः

After consecration, they went to the Vindhya mountains and practised terrible austerities there.

अभिषेक के बाद, वे विंध्य पर्वत पर चले गए और वहां भयानक तपस्या की।

क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्तौ जटावल्कलधारिणौ मलोपचितसर्वाङ्गौ वायुभक्षौ बभूवतुः

They were exhausted with hunger and thirst. Their hair was matted and they were dressed in the bark of trees. But they continued to perform austerities until they acquired powers. They covered all their limbs with filth and lived on air.

वे भूख-प्यास से व्याकुल हो गये थे। उनके बाल उलझे हुए थे और वे पेड़ों की छाल पहने हुए थे। लेकिन वे तब तक तपस्या करते रहे जब तक उन्हें शक्तियाँ प्राप्त नहीं हो गईं। वे अपने सारे अंगों को मैल से ढँक लेते थे और हवा पर रहते थे।

आत्ममांसानि जुह्वन्तौ पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रधिष्ठितौ ऊर्ध्वबाहू चानिमिषौ दीर्घकालं धृतव्रतौ

They offered their own flesh into the fire. They stood on the tips of their toes. Raising their arms and without blinking, they observed their vows for a long period.

उन्होंने अपना मांस अग्नि में अर्पित कर दिया। वे अपने पंजों के बल खड़े थे। अपनी भुजाएँ उठाकर और बिना पलकें झपकाए, उन्होंने लंबे समय तक अपनी प्रतिज्ञा का पालन किया।

तयोस्तपःप्रभावेण दीर्घकालं प्रतापितः धूमं प्रमुमुचे विन्ध्यस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्

Heated by the power of the length of their austerities, an extraordinary incident occurred. The Vindhya began to belch out smoke.

उनकी तपस्या की अवधि की शक्ति से उत्साहित होकर, एक असाधारण घटना घटी। विन्ध्य धुंआ उगलने लगा।

ततो देवाभवन्भीता उग्रं दृष्ट्वा तयोस्तपः तपोविघातार्थमथो देवा विघ्नानि चक्रिरे

On seeing the terrible power of their austerities, the gods were frightened. The gods created various obstacles to prevent them from attaining their vows.

उनकी तपस्या की भयानक शक्ति देखकर देवता भयभीत हो गये। देवताओं ने उन्हें उनकी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी करने से रोकने के लिए विभिन्न बाधाएँ उत्पन्न कीं।

रत्नैः प्रलोभयामासुः स्त्रीभिश्चोभौ पुनः पुनः न च तौ चक्रतुर्भङ्गं व्रतस्य सुमहाव्रतौ

They repeatedly tempted them with jewels and beautiful women. But the two of them stood firm against these temptations.

वे बार-बार उन्हें गहनों और सुन्दर स्त्रियों का प्रलोभन देते थे। लेकिन वे दोनों इन प्रलोभनों के विरुद्ध दृढ़ता से खड़े रहे।

अथ मायां पुनर्देवास्तयोश्चक्रुर्महात्मनोः भगिन्यो मातरो भार्यास्तयोः परिजनस्तथा

Then the gods used the power of Māyā on the two greatsouls, wherein their sisters, mothers, wives and relatives,

तब देवताओं ने उन दोनों महान आत्माओं पर, जिनमें उनकी बहनें, माताएँ, पत्नियाँ और रिश्तेदार थे, माया की शक्ति का प्रयोग किया।

परिपात्यमाना वित्रस्ताः शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा स्रस्ताभरणकेशान्ता एकान्तभ्रष्टवाससः

trembling and frightened, were oppressed by a rākṣasa who chased them with a spear. Their hair and ornaments were dishevelled and their garments fell loose.

कांपते और डरे हुए, एक राक्षस ने उन पर अत्याचार किया और भाले से उनका पीछा किया। उनके बाल और आभूषण अस्त-व्यस्त हो गये और उनके वस्त्र ढीले हो गये।

अभिधाव्य ततः सर्वास्तौ त्राहीति विचुक्रुशुः न च तौ चक्रतुर्भङ्गं व्रतस्य सुमहाव्रतौ

The women seemed to be running towards them, exclaiming, 'Save us!' But even this could not break the vows of the ones who were great in their vows.

महिलाएँ उनकी ओर दौड़ती हुई चिल्लाती हुई लग रही थीं, 'हमें बचाओ!' परन्तु यह भी उन लोगों की प्रतिज्ञा नहीं तोड़ सका जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में महान थे।

यदा क्षोभं नोपयाति नार्तिमन्यतरस्तयोः ततः स्त्रियस्ता भूतं च सर्वमन्तरधीयत

When they were not shocked or grieved at this, the women and the demon all vanished.

जब वे इस पर आश्चर्यचकित या दुखी नहीं हुए, तो महिलाएं और राक्षस सभी गायब हो गए।

ततः पितामहः साक्षादभिगम्य महासुरौ वरेण छन्दयामास सर्वलोकपितामहः

Then Brahmā himself appeared before the great āsura-s. He who is the grandfather of all the worlds asked them to seek a boon.

तब ब्रह्मा स्वयं महान असुरों के सामने प्रकट हुए। जो समस्त लोकों के पितामह हैं, उन्होंने उनसे वरदान माँगने को कहा।

ततः सुन्दोपसुन्दौ तौ भ्रातरौ दृढविक्रमौ दृष्ट्वा पितामहं देवं तस्थतुः प्राञ्जली तदा

On seeing the god and grandfather, Sunda and Upasunda, those two brothers who were firm in their valour, stood before him with their hands joined.

भगवान और पितामह को देखकर, सुन्द और उपसुन्द, वे दोनों भाई, जो अपनी वीरता में दृढ़ थे, हाथ जोड़कर उनके सामने खड़े हो गये।

ऊचतुश्च प्रभुं देवं ततस्तौ सहितौ तदा आवयोस्तपसानेन यदि प्रीतः पितामहः

Together, they then spoke to the illustrious god. "O grandfather! If you are pleased with our austerities,

साथ में, उन्होंने फिर शानदार भगवान से बात की। "हे पितामह! यदि आप हमारी तपस्या से प्रसन्न हैं।"

मायाविदावस्त्रविदौ बलिनौ कामरूपिणौ उभावप्यमरौ स्यावः प्रसन्नो यदि नौ प्रभुः

then may we possess the knowledge of delusion and the knowledge of all weapons. May we be strong and may we have the power to change our form at will. If the illustrious lord is pleased with us, may we be immortal."

तब हम भ्रम का ज्ञान और सभी हथियारों का ज्ञान प्राप्त कर सकते हैं। हम सशक्त हों और इच्छानुसार रूप बदलने की शक्ति हममें हो। यदि महामहिम प्रभु हम पर प्रसन्न हैं, तो हम अमर हो जायें।"

पितामह उवाच ऋतेऽमरत्वमन्यद्वां सर्वमुक्तं भविष्यति अन्यद्वृणीतां मृत्योश्च विधानममरैः समम्

Brahmā replied: "Except for being immortal, everything else will be the way you wish. Choose a means of death that will make you the equal of the immortals.

ब्रह्मा ने उत्तर दिया: "अमर होने के अलावा, बाकी सब कुछ वैसा ही होगा जैसा आप चाहते हैं। मृत्यु का एक साधन चुनें जो आपको अमरों के बराबर बना देगा।

करिष्यावेदमिति यन्महदभ्युत्थितं तपः युवयोर्हेतुनानेन नामरत्वं विधीयते

Since you have performed these austerities with an objective in mind, the boon of immortality cannot be granted to you.

चूँकि आपने ये तपस्या किसी उद्देश्य को ध्यान में रखकर की है, इसलिए आपको अमरता का वरदान नहीं दिया जा सकता।

त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय भवद्भ्यामास्थितं तपः हेतुनानेन दैत्येन्द्रौ न वां कामं करोम्यहम्

You have undertaken these austerities with a view to conquering the three worlds. O, lords of the daitya-s! For this reason, I cannot grant you the boon that you desire."

आपने तीनों लोकों पर विजय प्राप्त करने के उद्देश्य से यह तपस्या की है। हे दैत्यों के स्वामी! इस कारण मैं तुम्हें वह वरदान नहीं दे सकता जो तुम चाहती हो।"

सुन्दोपसुन्दावूचतुः त्रिषु लोकेषु यद्भूतं किंचित्स्थावरजङ्गमम् सर्वस्मान्नौ भयं न स्यादृतेऽन्योन्यं पितामह

Sunda and Upasunda said: "O, grandfather! Then let us not face any fear from any being, anything mobile or immobile, any object in the three worlds, other than each other."

सुंद और उपसुंद ने कहा: "हे दादा! तो फिर हमें एक-दूसरे के अलावा तीनों लोकों में किसी भी प्राणी, किसी भी गतिशील या स्थिर वस्तु, किसी भी वस्तु से कोई डर नहीं होना चाहिए।"

पितामह उवाच यत्प्रार्थितं यथोक्तं च काममेतद्ददानि वाम् मृत्योर्विधानमेतच्च यथावद्वां भविष्यति

The grandfather replied: "I can grant you this boon, the way you have wished it. Your deaths will occur the way you have indicated."

दादाजी ने उत्तर दिया: "मैं तुम्हें यह वरदान दे सकता हूँ, जैसा तुमने चाहा है। तुम्हारी मृत्यु वैसे ही होगी जैसे तुमने संकेत किया है।"

नारद उवाच ततः पितामहो दत्त्वा वरमेतत्तदा तयोः निवर्त्य तपसस्तौ च ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम ह

Nārada said: Having then granted them this boon, Brahmā then asked them to refrain from austerities and returned to his world.

नारद ने कहा: तब उन्हें यह वरदान देने के बाद, ब्रह्मा ने उन्हें तपस्या से विरत रहने के लिए कहा और अपने लोक में लौट आए।

लब्ध्वा वराणि सर्वाणि दैत्येन्द्रावपि तावुभौ अवध्यौ सर्वलोकस्य स्वमेव भवनं गतौ

Having obtained those boons, the two brothers, the lords of the daitya-s, who could no longer be slain by anyone in the worlds, then returned to their home.

उन वरदानों को प्राप्त करने के बाद, दोनों भाई, दैत्यों के स्वामी, जो अब दुनिया में किसी के द्वारा नहीं मारे जा सकते थे, फिर अपने घर लौट आए।

तौ तु लब्धवरौ दृष्ट्वा कृतकामौ महासुरौ सर्वः सुहृज्जनस्ताभ्यां प्रमोदमुपजग्मिवान्

On seeing that the great āsura-s had obtained the boons and were successful in getting what they desired, all their well-wishers were extremely happy.

यह देखकर कि महान असुरों ने वरदान प्राप्त कर लिया है और वे जो चाहते थे उसे पाने में सफल रहे, उनके सभी शुभचिंतक अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।

ततस्तौ तु जटा हित्वा मौलिनौ संबभूवतुः महार्हाभरणोपेतौ विरजोम्बरधारिणौ

The two great āsura-s cut off their matted locks. They wore crowns and dressed themselves in expensive ornaments and unblemished garments.

दोनों महान असुरों ने अपनी उलझी हुई जटाएँ काट दीं। उन्होंने मुकुट पहने और महँगे आभूषण तथा बेदाग वस्त्र पहने।

अकालकौमुदीं चैव चक्रतुः सार्वकामिकीम् दैत्येन्द्रौ परमप्रीतौ तयोश्चैव सुहृज्जनः

Though it was not the right season, they observed the kaumudī festival. The lords of the daitya-s and their wellwishers happily enjoyed themselves in the festivities.

हालाँकि यह सही मौसम नहीं था, फिर भी उन्होंने कौमुदी उत्सव मनाया। दैत्यों के स्वामी और उनके शुभचिंतक उत्सव में आनंदपूर्वक आनंद लेते थे।

भक्ष्यतां भुज्यतां नित्यं रम्यतां गीयतामिति पीयतां दीयतां चेति वाच आसन्गृहे गृहे

In house after house were heard the words, 'eat', 'feed', 'pleasure', 'sing', 'drink' and 'give'.

घर-घर में ये शब्द सुनाई देते थे, 'खाओ', 'खिलाओ', 'खुशी मनाओ', 'गाओ', 'पीओ' और 'दो'।

तत्र तत्र महापानैरुत्कृष्टतलनादितैः हृष्टं प्रमुदितं सर्वं दैत्यानामभवत्पुरम्

There were great bouts of drinking. A roar arose from the clapping of hands. The entire city of the daitya-s went wild with joy.

जमकर शराब पीने का दौर चल रहा था। हाथों की थाप से एक गर्जना उठी। समस्त दैत्य नगर खुशी से झूम उठा।

तैस्तैर्विहारैर्बहुभिर्दैत्यानां कामरूपिणाम् समाः संक्रीडतां तेषामहरेकमिवाभवत्

As the daitya-s, who could assume any form at will, sported themselves in varied amusements, many years passed. But it seemed like a single day."

अपनी इच्छानुसार कोई भी रूप धारण कर सकने वाले दैत्यों ने तरह-तरह के मनोरंजन किए, कई वर्ष बीत गए। लेकिन यह एक ही दिन जैसा लग रहा था।"
