जनमेजय उवाच किमर्थं शार्ङ्गकानग्निर्न ददाह तथागते तस्मिन्वने दह्यमाने ब्रह्मन्नेतद्वदाशु मे

Janamejaya asked: O brāhmaṇa! Why did Agni, the fire, not burn the Śārṅgaka-s when that forest was blazing? Tell me at once.

जनमेजय ने पूछा: हे ब्राह्मण! जब वह जंगल धधक रहा था, तब अग्नि ने शारंगकों को क्यों नहीं जलाया? मुझे तुरंत बताओ.

अदाहे ह्यश्वसेनस्य दानवस्य मयस्य च कारणं कीर्तितं ब्रह्मञ्शार्ङ्गकानां न कीर्तितम्

O, brāhmaṇa! You have recounted the reason why Aśvasena and the dānava Māyā were not burnt. But you have not told us the reason for the Śārṅgaka-s.

हे ब्राह्मण! आपने अश्वसेन और दानव माया के न जलने का कारण बताया है। परंतु आपने हमें शारंगक-स का कारण नहीं बताया है।

तदेतदद्भुतं ब्रह्मञ्शार्ङ्गानामविनाशनम् कीर्तयस्वाग्निसंमर्दे कथं ते न विनाशिताः

O, brāhmaṇa! It is extraordinary that the Śārṅgaka-s escaped from destruction. Recount to us why they were not destroyed in the conflagaration.

हे ब्राह्मण! यह असाधारण है कि शारंगक विनाश से बच गए। हमें बताएं कि वे आग में नष्ट क्यों नहीं हुए।

वैशंपायन उवाच यदर्थं शार्ङ्गकानग्निर्न ददाह तथागते तत्ते सर्वं यथावृत्तं कथयिष्यामि भारत

Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! I will tell you everything exactly about why Agni did not consume the Śārṅgaka-s.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मैं तुम्हें सब कुछ ठीक-ठीक बताऊंगा कि अग्नि ने शारंगक को क्यों नहीं भस्म किया।

धर्मज्ञानां मुख्यतमस्तपस्वी संशितव्रतः आसीन्महर्षिः श्रुतवान्मन्दपाल इति श्रुतः

O king! There was a great riṣi renowned by the name of Mandapāla. He was learned in dharma, rigid in his vows and chief among ascetics.

हे राजा! मण्डपाल नाम से प्रसिद्ध एक महान ऋषि थे। वह धर्म में विद्वान, अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में कठोर और तपस्वियों में अग्रणी था।

स मार्गमास्थितो राजन्नृषीणामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् स्वाध्यायवान्धर्मरतस्तपस्वी विजितेन्द्रियः

He followed the path of the riṣi-s who held up their seed, was devoted to studying the sacred texts and dharma, was an ascetic and had achieved control over his senses.

उन्होंने उन ऋषियों के मार्ग का अनुसरण किया जिन्होंने अपने वंश को धारण किया, पवित्र ग्रंथों और धर्म का अध्ययन करने के लिए समर्पित थे, एक तपस्वी थे और उन्होंने अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण हासिल कर लिया था।

स गत्वा तपसः पारं देहमुत्सृज्य भारत जगाम पितृलोकाय न लेभे तत्र तत्फलम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having attained the final goal of ascetism, he gave up his human body and went to the world of the ancestors.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! तपस्या के अंतिम लक्ष्य को प्राप्त करने के बाद, उन्होंने अपना मानव शरीर त्याग दिया और पूर्वजों की दुनिया में चले गए।

स लोकानफलान्दृष्ट्वा तपसा निर्जितानपि पप्रच्छ धर्मराजस्य समीपस्थान्दिवौकसः

But he did not find the fruits of his acts there. The dwellers of heaven were seated around Dharmarāja and he asked them,

परन्तु उसे अपने कर्मों का फल वहाँ नहीं मिला। स्वर्गवासी धर्मराज के चारों ओर बैठे थे और उन्होंने उनसे पूछा,

किमर्थमावृता लोका ममैते तपसार्जिताः किं मया न कृतं तत्र यस्येदं कर्मणः फलम्

"Why have I not attained the worlds that should have been the fruit of my asceticism? What have I not done that this should be the fruit of my actions?

"मुझे वह लोक क्यों नहीं प्राप्त हुआ जो मेरी तपस्या का फल होना चाहिए था? मैंने ऐसा क्या नहीं किया कि यह मेरे कर्मों का फल होना चाहिए?

तत्राहं तत्करिष्यामि यदर्थमिदमावृतम् फलमेतस्य तपसः कथयध्वं दिवौकसः

O dwellers of heaven! I will do that which will get me the fruits of my asceticism and open that which is now closed. Tell me."

हे स्वर्ग के निवासियों! मैं वही करूंगा जिससे मुझे मेरी तपस्या का फल मिलेगा और जो अब बंद है उसे खोल दूंगा। मुझे बताओ।"

देवा ऊचुः ऋणिनो मानवा ब्रह्मञ्जायन्ते येन तच्छृणु क्रियाभिर्ब्रह्मचर्येण प्रजया च न संशयः

The gods replied: "O brāhmaṇa! Hear about the debts men are undoubtedly born with—to rituals, brahmacarya and offspring,

देवताओं ने उत्तर दिया: "हे ब्राह्मण! मनुष्य निःसंदेह कर्मकाण्ड, ब्रह्मचर्य और सन्तान के ऋण लेकर पैदा होते हैं, उसके बारे में सुनो।"

तदपाक्रियते सर्वं यज्ञेन तपसा सुतैः तपस्वी यज्ञकृच्चासि न तु ते विद्यते प्रजा

and these are respectively discharged through sacrifices, austerities and progeny. You are an ascetic and you have performed sacrifices. But you did not have any offspring.

और इनका निर्वहन क्रमशः बलिदान, तपस्या और संतान के माध्यम से होता है। आप तपस्वी हैं और आपने यज्ञ किये हैं। परन्तु तुम्हारी कोई सन्तान न हुई।

त इमे प्रसवस्यार्थे तव लोकाः समावृताः प्रजायस्व ततो लोकानुपभोक्तासि शाश्वतान्

Because you did not have offspring, these worlds are closed to you. Therefore, have progeny and you will enjoy these worlds for an eternity.

क्योंकि तुम्हारी कोई सन्तान नहीं हुई, इसलिये ये लोक तुम्हारे लिये बन्द हैं। इसलिए, संतान पैदा करो और तुम अनंत काल तक इन लोकों का आनंद उठाओगे।

पुन्नाम्नो नरकात्पुत्रस्त्रातीति पितरं मुने तस्मादपत्यसंताने यतस्व द्विजसत्तम

O sage! A son saves a father from the hell known as put. O supreme among brāhmana-s! Therefore, try to obtain offspring."

हे ऋषि! पुत्र पिता को पूत नामक नरक से बचाता है। हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! अत: संतान प्राप्ति का प्रयत्न करो।”

वैशंपायन उवाच तच्छ्रुत्वा मन्दपालस्तु तेषां वाक्यं दिवौकसाम् क्व नु शीघ्रमपत्यं स्याद्बहुलं चेत्यचिन्तयत्

Vaiśampāyana said: On hearing these words of the dwellers of heaven, Mandapāla began to wonder how he might obtain a large number of offspring swiftly.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: स्वर्ग के निवासियों के इन शब्दों को सुनकर, मंडपपाल को आश्चर्य हुआ कि वह तेजी से बड़ी संख्या में संतान कैसे प्राप्त कर सकता है।

स चिन्तयन्नभ्यगच्छद्बहुलप्रसवान्खगान् शार्ङ्गिकां शार्ङ्गको भूत्वा जरितां समुपेयिवान्

After thinking about this, he concluded that birds give birth to many offspring. 'So he became a Śārṅgaka bird and united with a female Śārṅgaka bird named Jaritā.

इस पर विचार करने के बाद उन्होंने निष्कर्ष निकाला कि पक्षी अनेक संतानों को जन्म देते हैं। 'तो वह एक शारंगक पक्षी बन गया और जरिता नामक मादा शारंगक पक्षी के साथ एकजुट हो गया।

तस्यां पुत्रानजनयच्चतुरो ब्रह्मवादिनः तानपास्य स तत्रैव जगाम लपितां प्रति बालान्सुतानण्डगतान्मात्रा सह मुनिर्वने

Through her, he had four sons who were knowledgable about the brāhman. While these young sons were still inside their eggs, the sage deserted them there in that forest with their mother and went off after Lapitā.

उसके माध्यम से, उनके चार बेटे हुए जो ब्राह्मण के बारे में जानकार थे। जब ये छोटे बेटे अभी भी अपने अंडों के अंदर थे, ऋषि ने उन्हें उनकी माँ के साथ उस जंगल में छोड़ दिया और लपिता के पीछे चले गए।

तस्मिन्गते महाभागे लपितां प्रति भारत अपत्यस्नेहसंविग्ना जरिता बह्वचिन्तयत्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When the immensely illustrious one went off after Lapitā, out of affection for her children, Jaritā became very thoughtful and anxious.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब अत्यंत वैभवशाली व्यक्ति अपने बच्चों के प्रति स्नेह के कारण लपिता के पीछे चला गया, तो जरीता बहुत विचारशील और चिंतित हो गई।

तेन त्यक्तानसंत्याज्यानृषीनण्डगतान्वने नाजहत्पुत्रकानार्ता जरिता खाण्डवे नृप बभार चैतान्संजातान्स्ववृत्त्या स्नेहविक्लवा

O king! Those sons, the infant riṣi-s still in their eggs, had undeservedly been abandoned by their father in Khāṇḍava forest. But out of love for her sons, Jaritā could not discard them and after they were born, brought them up in her own way.

हे राजा! उन पुत्रों को, शिशु ऋषि-जो अभी भी अपने अंडों में थे, उनके पिता ने खांडव वन में अवांछनीय रूप से त्याग दिया था। लेकिन अपने बेटों के प्यार के कारण, जरिता उन्हें त्याग नहीं सकी और उनके पैदा होने के बाद, उन्हें अपने तरीके से पाला।

ततोऽग्निं खाण्डवं दग्धुमायान्तं दृष्टवानृषिः मन्दपालश्चरंस्तस्मिन्वने लपितया सह

After some time, the riṣi Mandapāla was wandering in the forest with Lapitā and he saw Agni advance towards Khāṇḍava to consume it.

कुछ समय बाद, ऋषि मंडपल लपिता के साथ जंगल में घूम रहे थे और उन्होंने अग्नि को खांडव की ओर बढ़ते हुए देखा।

तं संकल्पं विदित्वास्य ज्ञात्वा पुत्रांश्च बालकान् सोऽभितुष्टाव विप्रर्षिर्ब्राह्मणो जातवेदसम् पुत्रान्परिददद्भीतो लोकपालं महौजसम्

Knowing his resolution and knowing his sons were still young, the brāhmaṇa sage prayed to the greatly energetic fire, lord of the world, scared about the protection of his sons.

उनके संकल्प को जानकर और यह जानते हुए कि उनके बेटे अभी भी छोटे थे, ब्राह्मण ऋषि ने अपने बेटों की सुरक्षा के बारे में चिंतित होकर, दुनिया के भगवान, अत्यधिक ऊर्जावान अग्नि से प्रार्थना की।

मन्दपाल उवाच त्वमग्ने सर्वदेवानां मुखं त्वमसि हव्यवाट् त्वमन्तः सर्वभूतानां गूढश्चरसि पावक

Mandapāla said: "O Agni! You are the mouth of all the gods, you are the one who carries sacrificial offerings. You are the purifier who dwells invisibly in all living beings.

मंडपपाल ने कहा: "हे अग्नि! आप सभी देवताओं के मुख हैं, आप ही यज्ञ-हव्य धारण करने वाले हैं। आप पवित्र करने वाले हैं जो सभी जीवित प्राणियों में अदृश्य रूप से निवास करते हैं।

त्वामेकमाहुः कवयस्त्वामाहुस्त्रिविधं पुनः त्वामष्टधा कल्पयित्वा यज्ञवाहमकल्पयन्

The learned have said that you are one and have again said that you are three. They think of you in eight forms and imagine you as the one who carries sacrificial offerings.

ज्ञानियों ने कहा है कि तुम एक हो और फिर कहा है कि तुम तीन हो। वे आपके बारे में आठ रूपों में सोचते हैं और आपकी कल्पना यज्ञ सामग्री ले जाने वाले व्यक्ति के रूप में करते हैं।

त्वया सृष्टमिदं विश्वं वदन्ति परमर्षयः त्वदृते हि जगत्कृत्स्नं सद्यो न स्याद्धुताशन

The supreme riṣi-s say that you have created the entire universe. O fire! The universe is based on you and without you, it will be destroyed instantly.

परम ऋषियों का कहना है कि आपने संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड का निर्माण किया है। हे अग्नि! ब्रह्मांड आप पर आधारित है और आपके बिना यह तुरंत नष्ट हो जाएगा।

तुभ्यं कृत्वा नमो विप्राः स्वकर्मविजितां गतिम् गच्छन्ति सह पत्नीभिः सुतैरपि च शाश्वतीम्

It is after paying homage to you that the brāhmana-s go to the eternal worlds they have earned through their actions, together with their wives and sons.

आपको प्रणाम करने के बाद ही ब्राह्मण अपनी पत्नियों और पुत्रों सहित अपने कार्यों से अर्जित शाश्वत लोक में जाते हैं।

त्वामग्ने जलदानाहुः खे विषक्तान्सविद्युतः दहन्ति सर्वभूतानि त्वत्तो निष्क्रम्य हायनाः

O Agni! It is said that you are the fire in the clouds in the sky, in their lightning. The flames that emerge from you burn down all beings.

हे अग्नि! कहा जाता है कि आप आकाश में बादलों में, उनकी बिजली में अग्नि हैं। आपसे निकलने वाली ज्वालाएँ समस्त प्राणियों को जला डालती हैं।

जातवेदस्तवैवेयं विश्वसृष्टिर्महाद्युते तवैव कर्म विहितं भूतं सर्वं चराचरम्

O immensely radiant one! O Jātaveda! You have created everything in this universe. Everything, mobile and immobile, every action and everything that exists is based on you.

हे अत्यंत तेजस्वी! हे जातवेद! आपने इस ब्रह्मांड में सब कुछ बनाया है। हर चीज़, गतिशील और स्थिर, हर क्रिया और जो कुछ भी अस्तित्व में है वह आप पर आधारित है।

त्वयापो विहिताः पूर्वं त्वयि सर्वमिदं जगत् त्वयि हव्यं च कव्यं च यथावत्संप्रतिष्ठितम्

You have determined the ancient waters, everything in the universe is based on you. The offerings to the gods and the offerings to the ancestors, as prescribed, are based on you.

आपने प्राचीन जल का निर्धारण किया है, ब्रह्मांड में सब कुछ आप पर आधारित है। देवताओं को दिया जाने वाला तर्पण और पितरों को दिया जाने वाला तर्पण, जैसा कि निर्धारित है, आप पर आधारित है।

अग्ने त्वमेव ज्वलनस्त्वं धाता त्वं बृहस्पतिः त्वमश्विनौ यमौ मित्रः सोमस्त्वमसि चानिलः

O Agni! You are the one who burns down, you are Dhaṭa, you are Bṛhaspati. You are the two Aśvin-s, the two Yāma-s, Mitrā, Somā and Anīla."

हे अग्नि! आप ही जलाने वाले हैं, आप ही धाता हैं, आप ही बृहस्पति हैं। आप दो अश्विन, दो यम, मित्र, सोम और अनिल हैं।"

वैशंपायन उवाच एवं स्तुतस्ततस्तेन मन्दपालेन पावकः तुतोष तस्य नृपते मुनेरमिततेजसः उवाच चैनं प्रीतात्मा किमिष्टं करवाणि ते

Vaiśampāyana said: O king! Having been thus prayed to by Mandapāla, Agni was satisfied with the immeasurably energetic sage. With happiness in his heart, he asked him, "What good can I do for you?"

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! मण्डपाल द्वारा इस प्रकार प्रार्थना करने पर, अग्नि उस अत्यंत ऊर्जावान ऋषि से संतुष्ट हो गये। उसने मन ही मन प्रसन्न होकर उससे पूछा, “मैं तुम्हारी क्या भलाई कर सकता हूँ?”

तमब्रवीन्मन्दपालः प्राञ्जलिर्हव्यवाहनम् प्रदहन्खाण्डवं दावं मम पुत्रान्विसर्जय

With hands joined in salutation, Mandapāla told the fire, "When you burn Khāṇḍava forest, please spare my sons."

नमस्कार में हाथ जोड़कर मंडपपाल ने अग्नि से कहा, "जब आप खांडव वन को जलाएंगे, तो कृपया मेरे पुत्रों को छोड़ दें।"

तथेति तत्प्रतिश्रुत्य भगवान्हव्यवाहनः खाण्डवे तेन कालेन प्रजज्वाल दिधक्षया

The illustrious bearer of sacrificial offerings gave him his word and at that time, he blazed into Khāṇḍava, wishing to consume it.

यज्ञ-हवन के प्रतिष्ठित वाहक ने उसे अपना वचन दिया और उसी समय, वह उसे भस्म करने की इच्छा से खाण्डव में धधक उठा।
