गन्धर्व उवाच एवमुक्तः स विप्रर्षिर्वसिष्ठेन महात्मना न्ययच्छदात्मनः कोपं सर्वलोकपराभवात्

The gāndharva said: "Having been thus addressed by the great-souled Vaśiṣṭha, the Brāhmaṇa riṣi controlled his anger, which would have destroyed all the worlds.

गंधर्व ने कहा: "महात्मा वशिष्ठ द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, ब्राह्मण ऋषि ने अपने क्रोध को नियंत्रित किया, जिसने सभी लोकों को नष्ट कर दिया होता।

ईजे च स महातेजाः सर्ववेदविदां वरः ऋषी राक्षससत्रेण शाक्तेयोऽथ पराशरः

But the immensely energetic Parāśara, Śakti's son and chief among those who were learned in the Veda-s, performed a rākṣasa sacrifice.

लेकिन अत्यंत ऊर्जावान पराशर, शक्ति के पुत्र और वेदों के विद्वानों में प्रमुख, ने एक राक्षस यज्ञ किया।

ततो वृद्धांश्च बालांश्च राक्षसान्स महामुनिः ददाह वितते यज्ञे शक्तेर्वधमनुस्मरन्

Remembering Śakti's slaughter, the great sage began to consume rākṣasa-s, old and young, in that sacrifice.

शक्ति के वध को याद करते हुए, महान ऋषि ने उस यज्ञ में बूढ़े और जवान राक्षसों को भस्म करना शुरू कर दिया।

न हि तं वारयामास वसिष्ठो रक्षसां वधात् द्वितीयामस्य मा भाङ्क्षं प्रतिज्ञामिति निश्चयात्

Not wishing to restrain him from this second vow, Vaśiṣṭha did not prevent him from destroying the rākṣasa-s..

इस दूसरे व्रत से उसे रोकना न चाहते हुए भी, वशिष्ठ ने उसे राक्षसों को नष्ट करने से नहीं रोका।

त्रयाणां पावकानां स सत्रे तस्मिन्महामुनिः आसीत्पुरस्ताद्दीप्तानां चतुर्थ इव पावकः

The great sage sat at that sacrifice, with three blazing fires in front of him. He himself looked like a fourth fire.

महान ऋषि उस यज्ञ में बैठे, उनके सामने तीन धधकती हुई अग्नियाँ थीं। वह स्वयं चौथी अग्नि के समान प्रतीत होता था।

तेन यज्ञेन शुभ्रेण हूयमानेन युक्तितः तद्विदीपितमाकाशं सूर्येणेव घनात्यये

Many were the of ferings that were poured at this radiant sacrifice and the sky was lit up, like the sun emer ging from behind the clouds.

इस दीप्तिमान यज्ञ में बहुत से जल अर्पित किए गए और आकाश ऐसे प्रकाशित हो उठा, जैसे बादलों के पीछे से सूरज निकल रहा हो।

तं वसिष्ठादयः सर्वे मुनयस्तत्र मेनिरे तेजसा दिवि दीप्यन्तं द्वितीयमिव भास्करम्

Vaśiṣṭha and the other sages regarded the sage, blazing with his own radiance, like a second sun.

वशिष्ठ तथा अन्य ऋषिगण अपने तेज से चमकते हुए ऋषि को दूसरे सूर्य के समान मानते थे।

ततः परमदुष्प्रापमन्यैरृषिरुदारधीः समापिपयिषुः सत्रं तमत्रिः समुपागमत्

Thereupon, the great and noble-minded sage Atri came to that place, wishing to put an end to the sacrifice, a task that would have been impossible for anyone else to accomplish.

इसके बाद, महान और नेक दिमाग वाले ऋषि अत्रि उस स्थान पर आए, यज्ञ को समाप्त करने की इच्छा रखते हुए, एक ऐसा कार्य जिसे पूरा करना किसी और के लिए असंभव था।

तथा पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुश्चैव महाक्रतुम् उपाजग्मुरमित्रघ्न रक्षसां जीवितेप्सया

O destroyer of enemies! Pulastya, Pulaha and Kratu also came to that great sacrifice, since they also desired that the rākṣasa-s should live.

हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! पुलस्त्य, पुलह और क्रतु भी उस महान यज्ञ में आये, क्योंकि वे भी चाहते थे कि राक्षस जीवित रहें।

पुलस्त्यस्तु वधात्तेषां रक्षसां भरतर्षभ उवाचेदं वचः पार्थ पराशरमरिंदमम्

O bull of the Bhārata lineage! O Pārtha! On seeing that many rākṣasa-s had already been killed, Pulastya spoke to Parāśara, that chastiser of enemies.

हे भरत वंश के बैल! हे पार्थ! यह देखकर कि बहुत से राक्षस पहले ही मारे जा चुके थे, पुलस्त्य ने शत्रुओं को दंडित करने वाले पराशर से बात की।

कच्चित्तातापविघ्नं ते कच्चिन्नन्दसि पुत्रक अजानतामदोषाणां सर्वेषां रक्षसां वधात्

"O son! Do you find no obstructions in the way of this sacrifice? O son! Do you find pleasure in killing all these rākṣasa-s, who are ignorant and innocent?

"हे पुत्र! क्या तुम्हें इस यज्ञ के मार्ग में कोई बाधा नहीं दिखती? हे पुत्र! क्या तुम्हें इन सभी राक्षसों को, जो अज्ञानी और निर्दोष हैं, मारने में आनंद मिलता है?"

प्रजोच्छेदमिमं मह्यं सर्वं सोमपसत्तम अधर्मिष्ठं वरिष्ठः सन्कुरुषे त्वं पराशर राजा कल्माषपादश्च दिवमारोढुमिच्छति

O Parāśara! You are foremost among those who drink the somā juice. You should not destroy all my progeny in this way. You are a virtuous man. You should not think that the path of adharma will be good for you. King Kalmāṣapāda himself wishes to ascend to heaven.

हे पराशर! आप सोम रस पीने वालों में अग्रणी हैं। तुम्हें इस प्रकार मेरी सारी संतान को नष्ट नहीं करना चाहिए। आप एक नेक इंसान हैं. आपको यह नहीं सोचना चाहिए कि अधर्म का मार्ग आपके लिए अच्छा होगा। राजा कल्माषपाद स्वयं स्वर्ग जाना चाहते हैं।

ये च शक्त्यवराः पुत्रा वसिष्ठस्य महामुनेः ते च सर्वे मुदा युक्ता मोदन्ते सहिताः सुरैः सर्वमेतद्वसिष्ठस्य विदितं वै महामुने

Śakti's younger brothers, sons of the great sage Vaśiṣṭha, are now enjoying great happiness in the company of the gods. O son! O hermit! All this was known to the great sage Vaśiṣṭha,

शक्ति के छोटे भाई, महान ऋषि वशिष्ठ के पुत्र, अब देवताओं की संगति में बहुत खुशी का आनंद ले रहे हैं। हे वत्स हे साधु! यह सब महर्षि वशिष्ठ को ज्ञात था,

रक्षसां च समुच्छेद एष तात तपस्विनाम् निमित्तभूतस्त्वं चात्र क्रतौ वासिष्ठनन्दन स सत्रं मुञ्च भद्रं ते समाप्तमिदमस्तु ते

including the destruction of the rākṣasa-s. O Vaśiṣṭha's descendant! You have only been an instrument in this sacrifice. Be fortunate and give up this sacrifice. Let it come to an end now."

जिसमें राक्षसों का विनाश भी शामिल है। हे वशिष्ठ के वंशज! आप तो इस यज्ञ में एक निमित्त मात्र रहे हैं। भाग्यशाली बनो और इस त्याग को त्याग दो। इसे अब ख़त्म होने दीजिए।”

एवमुक्तः पुलस्त्येन वसिष्ठेन च धीमता तदा समापयामास सत्रं शाक्तिः पराशरः

Having been thus addressed by Pulastya and the wise Vaśiṣṭha, Śakti's son Parāśara brought an end to the sacrifice.

पुलस्त्य और बुद्धिमान वशिष्ठ द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर, शक्ति के पुत्र पराशर ने यज्ञ को समाप्त कर दिया।

सर्वराक्षससत्राय संभृतं पावकं मुनिः उत्तरे हिमवत्पार्श्वे उत्ससर्ज महावने

The sage threw away the fire that had been lit for the rākṣasa sacrifice into the great forest that was to the north of the Himālaya-s.

ऋषि ने राक्षस यज्ञ के लिए जलाई गई अग्नि को हिमालय के उत्तर में स्थित विशाल वन में फेंक दिया।

स तत्राद्यापि रक्षांसि वृक्षानश्मान एव च भक्षयन्दृश्यते वह्निः सदा पर्वणि पर्वणि

Even today, the fire is always visible there in all the seasons, consuming rākṣasa-s, trees and rocks."

आज भी वहां सभी मौसमों में आग राक्षसों, पेड़ों और चट्टानों को भस्म करती हुई दिखाई देती है।"
