भीष्म उवाच न रोचते विग्रहो मे पाण्डुपुत्रैः कथंचन यथैव धृतराष्ट्रो मे तथा पाण्डुरसंशयम्

Bhīṣma said: "I will never agree to a war with Pāṇḍu's sons. There is no doubt that Pāṇḍu was as dear to me as Dhṛtarāṣṭra is.

भीष्म ने कहा: "मैं पांडु के पुत्रों के साथ युद्ध के लिए कभी सहमत नहीं होऊंगा। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि पांडु मेरे लिए उतने ही प्रिय थे जितने धृतराष्ट्र हैं।"

गान्धार्याश्च यथा पुत्रास्तथा कुन्तीसुता मताः यथा च मम ते रक्ष्या धृतराष्ट्र तथा तव

To me, the sons of Gāndhārī are like the sons of Kuntī. O Dhṛtarāṣṭra! They must be protected as muc by me as by you.

मेरे लिए गांधारी के पुत्र कुंती के पुत्रों के समान हैं। हे धृतराष्ट्र! उनकी रक्षा मुझे भी उतनी ही करनी होगी जितनी आपकी।

यथा च मम राज्ञश्च तथा दुर्योधनस्य ते तथा कुरूणां सर्वेषामन्येषामपि भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Like they are to me and the king, they should be the same way to Duryodhana and the other sons of Kuru. Therefore, I can never favour a war with them.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जैसे वे मेरे और राजा के लिए हैं, वैसे ही वे दुर्योधन और कुरु के अन्य पुत्रों के लिए भी होने चाहिए। अत: मैं कभी भी उनके साथ युद्ध का पक्ष नहीं ले सकता।

एवं गते विग्रहं तैर्न रोचये; संधाय वीरैर्दीयतामद्य भूमिः तेषामपीदं प्रपितामहानां; राज्यं पितुश्चैव कुरूत्तमानाम्

Have a treaty with those warriors and give them land. For those best of the Kuru-s, there is no doubt that this is the kingdom of their fathers and grandfathers.

उन योद्धाओं से संधि करके उन्हें भूमि दे दो। उन सर्वश्रेष्ठ कुरुवंशियों के लिए, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि यह उनके पिता और दादाओं का राज्य है।

दुर्योधन यथा राज्यं त्वमिदं तात पश्यसि मम पैतृकमित्येवं तेऽपि पश्यन्ति पाण्डवाः

O Duryodhana! Just as you consider this kingdom to be your parental property, the Pāṇḍava-s also see it as their paternal property.

हे दुर्योधन! जैसे आप इस राज्य को अपनी पैतृक संपत्ति मानते हैं, वैसे ही पांडव भी इसे अपनी पैतृक संपत्ति मानते हैं।

यदि राज्यं न ते प्राप्ताः पाण्डवेयास्तपस्विनः कुत एव तवापीदं भारतस्य च कस्यचित्

If the Pāṇḍava-s, who practise austerities, cannot get this kingdom, how can it be yours or of anyone from the Bhārata lineage?

यदि तपस्या करने वाले पांडवों को यह राज्य नहीं मिल सका, तो यह आपका या भरत वंश के किसी अन्य का कैसे हो सकता है?

अथ धर्मेण राज्यं त्वं प्राप्तवान्भरतर्षभ तेऽपि राज्यमनुप्राप्ताः पूर्वमेवेति मे मतिः

O bull among the Bhārata-s! If you think that you have acquired this kingdom through what is right, I think that they rightfully think that they obtained the kingdom before you.

हे भरतवंशियों में से बैल! यदि तुम यह सोचते हो कि तुमने यह राज्य धर्म के द्वारा प्राप्त किया है, तो मैं सोचता हूं कि वे भी उचित ही सोचते हैं कि उन्होंने तुम से पहले राज्य प्राप्त किया है।

मधुरेणैव राज्यस्य तेषामर्धं प्रदीयताम् एतद्धि पुरुषव्याघ्र हितं सर्वजनस्य च

O tiger among men! Peacefully give them half of the kingdom. That will be the best for everyone. If you act in any other way, no good will come out of it.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! शांतिपूर्वक उन्हें आधा राज्य दे दो। वह सभी के लिए सर्वोत्तम होगा. यदि आप किसी अन्य तरीके से कार्य करेंगे तो इससे कोई लाभ नहीं होगा।

अतोऽन्यथा चेत्क्रियते न हितं नो भविष्यति तवाप्यकीर्तिः सकला भविष्यति न संशयः

There is no doubt that you will be covered in dishonour. Try to preserve your good reputation.

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि आप बदनामी के घेरे में आ जायेंगे। अपनी अच्छी प्रतिष्ठा बनाए रखने का प्रयास करें।

कीर्तिरक्षणमातिष्ठ कीर्तिर्हि परमं बलम् नष्टकीर्तेर्मनुष्यस्य जीवितं ह्यफलं स्मृतम्

A good reputation is the source of supreme strength. It is said that a man who has lost his reputation, lives in vain.

एक अच्छी प्रतिष्ठा सर्वोच्च शक्ति का स्रोत है। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि जिस व्यक्ति ने अपनी प्रतिष्ठा खो दी, उसका जीवन व्यर्थ है।

यावत्कीर्तिर्मनुष्यस्य न प्रणश्यति कौरव तावज्जीवति गान्धारे नष्टकीर्तिस्तु नश्यति

O son of Gāndhārī! O descendant of Kuru! As long as a man's good reputation lasts, he does not die. He is destroyed when his good reputation is lost.

हे गांधारी के पुत्र! हे कुरु के वंशज! जब तक मनुष्य की अच्छी प्रतिष्ठा रहती है, तब तक वह मरता नहीं। जब उसकी अच्छी प्रतिष्ठा नष्ट हो जाती है तो वह नष्ट हो जाता है।

तमिमं समुपातिष्ठ धर्मं कुरुकुलोचितम् अनुरूपं महाबाहो पूर्वेषामात्मनः कुरु

Therefore, follow the dharma that is worthy of the Kuru lineage. O one with mighty arms! Act as your ancestors have acted before you.

अत: कुरु वंश के योग्य धर्म का पालन करो। हे शक्तिशाली भुजाओं वाले! वैसा ही करो जैसा तुम्हारे पूर्वजों ने तुमसे पहले किया था।

दिष्ट्या धरन्ति ते वीरा दिष्ट्या जीवति सा पृथा दिष्ट्या पुरोचनः पापो नसकामोऽत्ययं गतः

It is fortunate that those warriors are alive. It is fortunate that Pṛthā is alive. It is fortunate that the evil Purocana himself perished, without being successful.

यह सौभाग्य की बात है कि वे योद्धा जीवित हैं। यह सौभाग्य की बात है कि पृथा जीवित है। यह सौभाग्य की बात है कि दुष्ट पुरोचन स्वयं सफल हुए बिना नष्ट हो गया।

तदा प्रभृति गान्धारे न शक्नोम्यभिवीक्षितुम् लोके प्राणभृतां कंचिच्छ्रुत्वा कुन्तीं तथागताम्

O son of Gāndhārī! From the time I heard what had happened to the sons of Kuntī, I was not able to look at any living being.

हे गांधारी के पुत्र! जब से मैंने सुना कि कुन्ती के पुत्रों का क्या हाल हुआ, तब से मैं किसी भी जीवित प्राणी की ओर देख ही नहीं सका।

न चापि दोषेण तथा लोको वैति पुरोचनम् यथा त्वां पुरुषव्याघ्र लोको दोषेण गच्छति

O tiger among men! People do not think Purocana as guilty as they think you.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! लोग पुरोकाना को उतना दोषी नहीं मानते जितना वे तुम्हें समझते हैं।

तदिदं जीवितं तेषां तव कल्मषनाशनम् संमन्तव्यं महाराज पाण्डवानां च दर्शनम्

O king! Therefore, the escape of the Pāṇḍava-s from that destruction and their reappearance is something that should be wished for.

हे राजा! इसलिए, पांडवों का उस विनाश से बचना और उनका पुनः प्रकट होना ऐसी चीज है जिसकी कामना की जानी चाहिए।

न चापि तेषां वीराणां जीवतां कुरुनन्दन पित्र्योंऽशः शक्य आदातुमपि वज्रभृता स्वयम्

O descendant of the Kuru lineage! Know that as long as those warriors are alive, the wielder of the vajra himself cannot deprive them of their paternal property,

हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! जान लें कि जब तक वे योद्धा जीवित हैं, वज्रधारी स्वयं उन्हें उनकी पैतृक संपत्ति से वंचित नहीं कर सकता,

ते हि सर्वे स्थिता धर्मे सर्वे चैवैकचेतसः अधर्मेण निरस्ताश्च तुल्ये राज्ये विशेषतः

because they are established in dharma and are united. They have been deprived of an equal share in the kingdom through adharma.

क्योंकि वे धर्म में स्थित हैं और एकजुट हैं। अधर्म के कारण उन्हें राज्य में समान भाग से वंचित कर दिया गया है।

यदि धर्मस्त्वया कार्यो यदि कार्यं प्रियं च मे क्षेमं च यदि कर्तव्यं तेषामर्धं प्रदीयताम्

If you wish to act in accordance with dharma, if you wish to do that which pleases me, if you wish to do that which is good, give them half."

यदि तुम धर्म के अनुसार कार्य करना चाहते हो, यदि तुम वह करना चाहते हो जो मुझे प्रसन्न करता है, यदि तुम वह करना चाहते हो जो अच्छा है, तो उन्हें आधा दे दो।"
