वैशंपायन उवाच ततस्ते पाण्डवाः सर्वे पाञ्चाल्यश्च महायशाः प्रत्युत्थाय महात्मानं कृष्णं दृष्ट्वाभ्यपूजयन्

Vaiśampāyana said: As soon as they saw him, all the Pāṇḍava-s and the greatly illustrious son of Pāñcāla stood up. All of them welcomed and paid their respects to the greatsouled Kṛṣṇā.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जैसे ही उन्होंने उसे देखा, सभी पांडव और महान प्रतापी पुत्र पंचाल उठ खड़े हुए। उन सभी ने महान आत्मा कृष्ण का स्वागत किया और उनके प्रति सम्मान व्यक्त किया।

प्रतिनन्द्य स तान्सर्वान्पृष्ट्वा कुशलमन्ततः आसने काञ्चने शुभ्रे निषसाद महामनाः

The great-minded one returned their greetings and asked about their welfare. He then sat down on a radiant and golden seat.

महामना ने उनका अभिवादन करके उनका कुशलक्षेम पूछा। फिर वह एक उज्ज्वल और सुनहरे आसन पर बैठ गया।

अनुज्ञातास्तु ते सर्वे कृष्णेनामिततेजसा आसनेषु महार्हेषु निषेदुर्द्विपदां वराः

Instructed by Kṛṣṇā, the one with infinite energy, those greatest among men also sat down on expensive seats.

अनन्त शक्ति वाले कृष्ण के निर्देश पर वे श्रेष्ठ पुरुष भी महँगे आसनों पर बैठ गये।

ततो मुहूर्तान्मधुरां वाणीमुच्चार्य पार्षतः पप्रच्छ तं महात्मानं द्रौपद्यर्थे विशां पतिः

O lord of the people! After some time, in sweet words, Pārṣata asked the great-souled one about Draupadī.

हे प्रजापालक! कुछ देर बाद पराष्टा ने मीठे शब्दों में उन महात्मा से द्रौपदी के बारे में पूछा।

कथमेका बहूनां स्यान्न च स्याद्धर्मसंकरः एतन्नो भगवान्सर्वं प्रब्रवीतु यथातथम्

Drupada asked, "O fortunate lord! How can one woman become the wife of many, without leading to sin? Please explain this to us in detail."

द्रुपद ने पूछा, "हे भाग्यशाली भगवान! एक स्त्री अनेक लोगों की पत्नी कैसे बन सकती है, बिना पाप के? कृपया हमें विस्तार से बताएं।"

व्यास उवाच अस्मिन्धर्मे विप्रलम्भे लोकवेदविरोधके यस्य यस्य मतं यद्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि तस्य तत्

Vyāsa replied: In this religion, in the opposition of the Veda-s of the world, whatever I wish to hear from whatever opinion

व्यास ने उत्तर दिया: इस धर्म में, संसार के वेदों के विरोध में, मैं जिस किसी भी मत से सुनना चाहता हूँ।

द्रुपद उवाच अधर्मोऽयं मम मतो विरुद्धो लोकवेदयोः न ह्येका विद्यते पत्नी बहूनां द्विजसत्तम

Drupada said: "This dharma has fallen into disuse because it runs counter to the Veda-s and common practice. But on this, I wish to hear the opinions of each one of you."

द्रुपद ने कहा: "यह धर्म अप्रचलित हो गया है क्योंकि यह वेदों और सामान्य प्रथा के विपरीत है। लेकिन इस पर, मैं आप में से प्रत्येक की राय सुनना चाहता हूं।"

न चाप्याचरितः पूर्वैरयं धर्मो महात्मभिः न च धर्मोऽप्यनेकस्थश्चरितव्यः सनातनः

Drupada said, "In my view, this practice leads to a sin, because it is against the Veda-s and common practice. O best of the Brāhmana-s! Nowhere can a wife of many be found.

द्रुपद ने कहा, "मेरे विचार में, यह प्रथा पाप की ओर ले जाती है, क्योंकि यह वेदों और सामान्य प्रथा के विरुद्ध है। हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! कहीं भी कई लोगों की पत्नी नहीं मिल सकती है।"

अतो नाहं करोम्येवं व्यवसायं क्रियां प्रति धर्मसंदेहसंदिग्धं प्रतिभाति हि मामिदम्

Nor did the illustrious ones, of ancient times, follow such a dharma. Those who have wisdom should never follow such a dharma. I can therefore never convince myself of acting in this way. To me, this dharma appears to be of doubtful morality."

न ही प्राचीन काल के प्रतिष्ठित लोगों ने ऐसे धर्म का पालन किया। जिनके पास बुद्धि है उन्हें कभी भी ऐसे धर्म का पालन नहीं करना चाहिए।' इसलिए मैं कभी भी खुद को इस तरह से अभिनय करने के लिए मना नहीं सकता। मुझे तो यह धर्म संदिग्ध नैतिकता वाला प्रतीत होता है।”

धृष्टद्युम्न उवाच यवीयसः कथं भार्यां ज्येष्ठो भ्राता द्विजर्षभ ब्रह्मन्समभिवर्तेत सद्वृत्तः संस्तपोधन

Dhṛṣṭadyumna said: "O bull among the twice-born! O Brāhmaṇa! O one rich with austerities! If he follows the path that is righteous, how can an elder brother unite with the wife of his younger brother?

धृष्टद्युम्न ने कहा: "हे द्विजों में बैल! हे ब्राह्मण! हे तपस्या से समृद्ध! यदि वह धर्म के मार्ग पर चलता है, तो एक बड़ा भाई अपने छोटे भाई की पत्नी के साथ कैसे मिल सकता है?"

न तु धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मत्वाद्गतिं विद्मः कथंचन अधर्मो धर्म इति वा व्यवसायो न शक्यते

The ways of dharma are always subtle and, therefore, we do not know the ways in entirety. Thus, we cannot say what is in accordance with dharma and what is not.

धर्म के रास्ते हमेशा सूक्ष्म होते हैं और इसलिए, हम उन तरीकों को पूरी तरह से नहीं जानते हैं। इस प्रकार, हम यह नहीं कह सकते कि क्या धर्म के अनुरूप है और क्या नहीं।

कर्तुमस्मद्विधैर्ब्रह्मंस्ततो न व्यवसाम्यहम् पञ्चानां महिषी कृष्णा भवत्विति कथंचन

O Brāhmaṇa! We cannot therefore perform such an act with a clear mind. I cannot say that Kṛṣṇā should be the wife of five."

हे ब्राह्मण! इसलिए हम साफ़ मन से ऐसा कृत्य नहीं कर सकते। मैं यह नहीं कह सकता कि कृष्ण पाँच बच्चों की पत्नी होनी चाहिए।"

युधिष्ठिर उवाच न मे वागनृतं प्राह नाधर्मे धीयते मतिः वर्तते हि मनो मेऽत्र नैषोऽधर्मः कथंचन

Yudhiṣṭhira said: "My tongue never utters an untruth and my mind never turns to sin. When my mind approves, it cannot be sinful.

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा, "मेरी जीभ कभी असत्य नहीं बोलती और मेरा मन कभी पाप की ओर नहीं जाता। जब मेरा मन सहमत हो जाता है, तो वह पाप नहीं हो सकता।"

श्रूयते हि पुराणेऽपि जटिला नाम गौतमी ऋषीनध्यासितवती सप्त धर्मभृतां वर

I have heard in ancient tales that there was a lady named Jaṭilā in the Gautama lineage. She was chief among all virtuous women and consorted with seven sages.

मैंने प्राचीन कथाओं में सुना है कि गौतम वंश में जयतिला नाम की एक महिला थी। वह सभी गुणवान स्त्रियों में प्रमुख थी और सप्त ऋषियों से उसकी पत्नी थी।

गुरोश्च वचनं प्राहुर्धर्मं धर्मज्ञसत्तम गुरूणां चैव सर्वेषां जनित्री परमो गुरुः

O supreme among those who know the path of dharma! It is said that listening to the preceptor is virtue and among all preceptors, the mother is the foremost.

हे धर्म के मार्ग को जानने वालों में श्रेष्ठ! ऐसा कहा जाता है कि गुरु की बात सुनना पुण्य है और सभी गुरुओं में माँ सबसे प्रमुख है।

सा चाप्युक्तवती वाचं भैक्षवद्भुज्यतामिति तस्मादेतदहं मन्ये धर्मं द्विजवरोत्तम

She has commanded us that we must always share what we obtain. O best among the twice-born! Thus, do I consider this act virtuous."

उसने हमें आदेश दिया है कि हमें जो प्राप्त होता है उसे हमेशा साझा करना चाहिए। हे द्विजों में श्रेष्ठ! तो क्या मैं इस कृत्य को पुण्य मानता हूँ।”

कुन्त्युवाच एवमेतद्यथाहायं धर्मचारी युधिष्ठिरः अनृतान्मे भयं तीव्रं मुच्येयमनृतात्कथम्

Kuntī said: "It is as the virtuous Yudhiṣṭhira has said. I am frightened that my words might become untrue. How can I be saved from a lie?"

कुंती ने कहा: "यह वैसा ही है जैसा धर्मात्मा युधिष्ठिर ने कहा है। मुझे डर है कि कहीं मेरी बातें झूठी न हो जाएं। मैं झूठ से कैसे बच सकती हूं?"

व्यास उवाच अनृतान्मोक्ष्यसे भद्रे धर्मश्चैष सनातनः न तु वक्ष्यामि सर्वेषां पाञ्चाल शृणु मे स्वयम्

Vyāsa replied: "O fortunate one! You will be saved from a lie. This is eternal dharma. O king of Pāñcāla! I will not reveal this matter before everyone. You will alone hear how this practice was established and why this should be regarded as old and eternal.

व्यास ने उत्तर दिया: "हे भाग्यशाली! आप झूठ से बच जाएंगे। यह शाश्वत धर्म है। हे पंचाल के राजा! मैं इस मामले को सबके सामने प्रकट नहीं करूंगा। आप अकेले ही सुनेंगे कि यह प्रथा कैसे स्थापित की गई थी और इसे क्यों पुराना और शाश्वत माना जाना चाहिए।

यथायं विहितो धर्मो यतश्चायं सनातनः यथा च प्राह कौन्तेयस्तथा धर्मो न संशयः

There is no doubt that what Kaunteya has said is in accordance with dharma."

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि कौन्तेय ने जो कहा है वह धर्म के अनुरूप है।"

वैशंपायन उवाच तत उत्थाय भगवान्व्यासो द्वैपायनः प्रभुः करे गृहीत्वा राजानं राजवेश्म समाविशत्

Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the illustrious lord Dvaipyana Vyāsa arose and, taking hold of the king's hand, went into the king's palace.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: तब, महामहिम भगवान द्वैपायन व्यास उठे और राजा का हाथ पकड़कर, राजा के महल में चले गये।

पाण्डवाश्चापि कुन्ती च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः विचेतसस्ते तत्रैव प्रतीक्षन्ते स्म तावुभौ

The Pāṇḍava-s, Kuntī and Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna waited despondently for those two to return.

पांडव, कुंती और पार्श्वत धृष्टद्युम्न उन दोनों के लौटने का बेसब्री से इंतजार कर रहे थे।

ततो द्वैपायनस्तस्मै नरेन्द्राय महात्मने आचख्यौ तद्यथा धर्मो बहूनामेकपत्निता

Thereupon, Dvaipāyana explained to the great-souled king how it came to be that these men's marriage with a single wife was in conformity with dharma.

इसके बाद, द्वैपायन ने महान आत्मा वाले राजा को समझाया कि ऐसा कैसे हुआ कि इन लोगों का एक ही पत्नी के साथ विवाह धर्म के अनुरूप था।
