Vaiśampāyana said: There was a Brāhmaṇa who was known by the name of Māṇḍavya. He had perseverance and was learned in dharma. He was devoted to the truth and established in austerities.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: एक ब्राह्मण था जो मांडव्य के नाम से जाना जाता था। उनमें दृढ़ता थी और वे धर्म के विद्वान थे। वह सत्य के प्रति समर्पित और तपस्या में लीन थे।

ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्महायोगी तस्थौ मौनव्रतान्वितः
This great ascetic used to seat himself at the foot of a tree near the entrance to his hermitage. While observing a vow of silence, the great yogi raised his hands up high and meditated.
यह महान तपस्वी अपने आश्रम के प्रवेश द्वार के पास एक पेड़ के नीचे बैठा करता था। मौन व्रत का पालन करते हुए, महान योगी ने अपने हाथ ऊपर उठाए और ध्यान लगाया।
He passed a long time in these austerities. One day, some robbers came to his hermitage with stolen property. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! They were pursued by many guards.
इस तपस्या में उनका काफी समय व्यतीत हो गया। एक दिन, कुछ लुटेरे चोरी की संपत्ति लेकर उनके आश्रम में आये। हे भरत वंश में बैल! कई गार्डों ने उनका पीछा किया।

ते तस्यावसथे लोप्त्रं निदधुः कुरुसत्तम
निधाय च भयाल्लीनास्तत्रैवान्वागते बले
O supreme of the Kuru lineage! The robbers hid their stolen property there. Before the guards came, they also hid themselves in fear.
हे कुरु वंश के श्रेष्ठ! लुटेरों ने अपनी चोरी की संपत्ति वहीं छिपा दी। गार्ड के आने से पहले वे भी डर के मारे छिप गये।
O king! They asked the one blessed with the power of austerities, but he did not move from his posture. "O supreme among Brāhmana-s! In what direction did the robbers go? O Brāhmaṇa! Tell us, so that we can quickly pursue them."
हे राजा! उन्होंने तपस्या की शक्ति से संपन्न व्यक्ति से पूछा, लेकिन वह अपने आसन से नहीं हिला। "हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! लुटेरे किस दिशा में गए? हे ब्राह्मण! हमें बताएं, ताकि हम शीघ्रता से उनका पीछा कर सकें।"

तथा तु रक्षिणां तेषां ब्रुवतां स तपोधनः
न किंचिद्वचनं राजन्नवदत्साध्वसाधु वा
O king! Having been thus addressed by the guards, the one blessed with the power of austerities did not utter a single word in reply, good or bad.
हे राजा! पहरेदारों द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, तपस्या की शक्ति से धन्य व्यक्ति ने उत्तर में अच्छा या बुरा, एक भी शब्द नहीं कहा।

ततस्ते राजपुरुषा विचिन्वानास्तदाश्रमम्
ददृशुस्तत्र संलीनांस्तांश्चोरान्द्रव्यमेव च
At that, the king's officers began to search the hermitage and found the robbers and the stolen property hidden there.

Having impaled the sage on the stake, the guards then returned to the king with the stolen property they had recovered.

शूलस्थः स तु धर्मात्मा कालेन महता ततः
निराहारोऽपि विप्रर्षिर्मरणं नाभ्युपागमत्
धारयामास च प्राणानृषींश्च समुपानयत्
The righteous Brāhmaṇa and riṣi remained on the stake for a long time. But though he had no food, the riṣi did not die. O scorcher of enemies! The great-souled one continued to perform austerities on the tip of the stake.
धर्मात्मा ब्राह्मण और ऋषि बहुत समय तक दांव पर लगे रहे। लेकिन यद्यपि उनके पास भोजन नहीं था, फिर भी ऋषि की मृत्यु नहीं हुई। हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! वह महात्मा खूँटी की नोंक पर तपस्या करता रहा।
In the night they returned in the form of vultures from every direction. Having shown themselves in their own forms, they then asked that supreme of Brāhmana-s, "O Brāhmaṇa! We wish to know about the sin you have committed."
रात्रि में वे गिद्धों के रूप में हर दिशा से लौट आये। अपने स्वयं के रूप में प्रकट होने के बाद, उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों के सर्वोच्च से पूछा, "हे ब्राह्मण! हम आपके द्वारा किए गए पाप के बारे में जानना चाहते हैं।"

दोषतः कं गमिष्यामि न हि मेऽन्योऽपराध्यति
At that, the tiger among sages told the ones who were blessed with the power of austerities, "Whom shall I blame? There is no one but me who has committed a sin."
उस पर ऋषियों के बीच के बाघ ने तपस्या की शक्ति से धन्य लोगों से कहा, "मैं किसे दोष दूं? मेरे अलावा कोई नहीं है जिसने पाप किया है।"

राजा च तमृषिं श्रुत्वा निष्क्रम्य सह मन्त्रिभिः
प्रसादयामास तदा शूलस्थमृषिसत्तमम्
The king heard that he was a riṣi and went there with all his advisers. He pacified the supreme riṣi who was impaled on the tip of the stake.
राजा ने सुना कि वह एक ऋषि है और अपने सभी सलाहकारों के साथ वहाँ गया। उन्होंने काठ की नोक पर लटकाए गए परम ऋषि को शांत किया।

प्रसादये त्वां तत्राहं न मे त्वं क्रोद्धुमर्हसि
"O supreme among riṣi-s! I have caused you harm through delusion and ignorance. I seek your blessings. Please do not be angry with me."
"हे ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ! मैंने भ्रम और अज्ञान के कारण आपको नुकसान पहुंचाया है। मैं आपका आशीर्वाद चाहता हूं। कृपया मुझ पर क्रोधित न हों।"

एवमुक्तस्ततो राज्ञा प्रसादमकरोन्मुनिः
कृतप्रसादो राजा तं ततः समवतारयत्
On hearing the king's words, the sage was pacified. Having thus pacified him, the king then had him lowered from the stake.
राजा की बात सुनकर ऋषि शांत हो गये। इस प्रकार उसे शांत करके राजा ने उसे काठ से नीचे उतार दिया।

अवतार्य च शूलाग्रात्तच्छूलं निश्चकर्ष ह
अशक्नुवंश्च निष्क्रष्टुं शूलं मूले स चिच्छिदे
When he had lowered him, he tried to draw out the tip of the stake, but was unsuccessful. So he cut it off at the end.
जब उसने उसे नीचे उतारा, तो उसने खूंटी का सिरा बाहर निकालने की कोशिश की, लेकिन असफल रहा। इसलिए उन्होंने अंत में इसे काट दिया।

स तथान्तर्गतेनैव शूलेन व्यचरन्मुनिः
स तेन तपसा लोकान्विजिग्ये दुर्लभान्परैः
अणीमाण्डव्य इति च ततो लोकेषु कथ्यते
In that stage, with the stake still inside him, the sage continued to practise austerities and attained worlds that were difficult to obtain. Therefore, he was known as Aṇīmāṇḍavya in the world.
उस अवस्था में, अपने अंदर अभी भी दांव के साथ, ऋषि ने तपस्या करना जारी रखा और ऐसे लोक प्राप्त किए जिन्हें प्राप्त करना कठिन था। अत: वे संसार में अणिमाण्डव्य के नाम से विख्यात हुए।
One day, the Brāhmaṇa, who was well-versed in dharma and knew the supreme truth, went to the abode of Dharma. On seeing the illustrious Dharma seated, he asked him,

यस्येयं फलनिर्वृत्तिरीदृश्यासादिता मया
शीघ्रमाचक्ष्व मे तत्त्वं पश्य मे तपसो बलम्
"In my ignorance, what sin have I committed? Why have I suffered from such punishment? Tell me the truth immediately and then witness the power of my austerities."
"अपनी अज्ञानता में, मैंने कौन सा पाप किया है? मुझे ऐसा दंड क्यों भुगतना पड़ा? मुझे तुरंत सच बताओ और फिर मेरी तपस्या की शक्ति को देखो।"

धर्म उवाच
पतंगकानां पुच्छेषु त्वयेषीका प्रवेशिता
कर्मणस्तस्य ते प्राप्तं फलमेतत्तपोधन
Dharma replied: "O one blessed with the power of austerities! You had once pierced an insect in its tail with a blade of gras-s and you received the fruits of your action."
धर्म ने उत्तर दिया: "हे तपस्या की शक्ति से धन्य! आपने एक बार घास के ब्लेड से एक कीड़े की पूंछ में छेद कर दिया था और आपको अपने कर्म का फल मिला।"
Aṇīmāṇḍavya said: "You have imposed a grave punishment because of a small fault. O Dharma! Because of this, you will be born as a man in the womb of a Śūdra woman.
अनिमांडव्य ने कहा: "तुमने एक छोटी सी गलती के कारण गंभीर दंड दिया है। हे धर्म! इसके कारण, तुम एक शूद्र महिला के गर्भ से एक पुरुष के रूप में जन्म लेंगे।"
Today, I will lay down a law in this world for the fruits of one's deeds. No sin will be committed by anyone who is below the age of fourteen years. It will be sin only when committed above that age."
आज मैं इस संसार में मनुष्य के कर्मों के फल का विधान बनाऊंगा। चौदह वर्ष से कम आयु का कोई भी व्यक्ति कोई पाप नहीं करेगा। यह तभी पाप होगा जब इसे इस उम्र से ऊपर किया जाए।”
Vaiśampāyana said: Because he was cursed by that great-souled ascetic for that sin, Dharma was born as Vidūra in the womb of a Śūdra woman.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: क्योंकि उस पाप के लिए उस महान आत्मा वाले तपस्वी द्वारा उसे शाप दिया गया था, धर्म ने एक शूद्र महिला के गर्भ में विदुर के रूप में जन्म लिया।

धर्मे चार्थे च कुशलो लोभक्रोधविवर्जितः
दीर्घदर्शी शमपरः कुरूणां च हिते रतः
He was free from avarice and anger. He was skilled in the knowledge of dharma and artha. He was devoted to the welfare of the Kuru-s, was far-sighted and equable.
वह लोभ और क्रोध से मुक्त थे। वह धर्म और अर्थ के ज्ञान में कुशल थे। वह कुरु-वंश के कल्याण के प्रति समर्पित थे, दूरदर्शी और समदर्शी थे।
