जनमेजय उवाच य एते कीर्तिता ब्रह्मन्ये चान्ये नानुकीर्तिताः सम्यक्ताञ्श्रोतुमिच्छामि राज्ञश्चान्यान्सुवर्चसः

Janamejaya said: "O Brāhmaṇa! You have mentioned some and others you have not. I wish to hear in detail the accounts of all the radiant kings.

जनमेजय ने कहा: "हे ब्राह्मण! आपने कुछ का उल्लेख किया है और कुछ का नहीं। मैं सभी तेजस्वी राजाओं का वृत्तान्त विस्तार से सुनना चाहता हूँ।"

यदर्थमिह संभूता देवकल्पा महारथाः भुवि तन्मे महाभाग सम्यगाख्यातुमर्हसि

O man of good fortune! Why were these great warriors, the equals of the gods, born on earth? Tell me in detail."

हे सौभाग्यशाली पुरुष! देवताओं के समकक्ष ये महान योद्धा पृथ्वी पर क्यों पैदा हुए? मुझे विस्तार से बताओ।”

वैशंपायन उवाच रहस्यं खल्विदं राजन्देवानामिति नः श्रुतम् तत्तु ते कथयिष्यामि नमस्कृत्वा स्वयंभुवे

Vaiśampāyana said: "O king! We have heard that what you ask is unknown even to the gods. However, after paying my respects to Brahmā, I shall tell you that.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: "हे राजा! हमने सुना है कि आप जो पूछते हैं वह देवताओं को भी नहीं पता है। हालाँकि, ब्रह्मा को प्रणाम करने के बाद, मैं आपको वह बताऊंगा।"

त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवीं कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां पुरा जामदग्न्यस्तपस्तेपे महेन्द्रे पर्वतोत्तमे

In ancient times, after destroying the Kṣatriya-s on earth twenty-one times, Jāmadagni's son went to Māhendra, supreme among mountains, and began to practise austerities.

प्राचीन काल में, पृथ्वी पर क्षत्रियों को इक्कीस बार नष्ट करने के बाद, जमदग्नि के पुत्र, पहाड़ों के बीच सर्वोच्च महेंद्र के पास गए, और तपस्या करने लगे।

तदा निःक्षत्रिये लोके भार्गवेण कृते सति ब्राह्मणान्क्षत्रिया राजन्गर्भार्थिन्योऽभिचक्रमुः

O king! When the world was thus bereft of Kṣatriya-s by the one of the Bhṛgu lineage, Kṣatriya women used to come to Brāhmana-s to fill their wombs.

हे राजा! जब भृगु वंश के एक व्यक्ति द्वारा विश्व को क्षत्रियों से वंचित कर दिया गया था, तो क्षत्रिय महिलाएं अपनी कोख भरने के लिए ब्राह्मणों के पास आती थीं।

ताभिः सह समापेतुर्ब्राह्मणाः संशितव्रताः ऋतावृतौ नरव्याघ्र न कामान्नानृतौ तथा

O tiger among men! Brāhmana-s who were rigid in observance of their vows had intercourse with them during their productive periods, not out of lust, nor when they were not in season.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! जो ब्राह्मण अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं के पालन में कठोर थे, वे उनके साथ उनके उत्पादक काल के दौरान संभोग करते थे, न कि वासना के कारण, न ही जब वे मौसम में नहीं थे।

तेभ्यस्तु लेभिरे गर्भान्क्षत्रियास्ताः सहस्रशः ततः सुषुविरे राजन्क्षत्रियान्वीर्यसंमतान् कुमारांश्च कुमारीश्च पुनः क्षत्राभिवृद्धये

O king! Thus, thousands of Kṣatriya women conceived and gave birth to many Kṣatriyas of great power, boys as well as girls, so that the Kṣatriya race might thrive.

हे राजा! इस प्रकार, हजारों क्षत्रिय महिलाओं ने गर्भ धारण किया और कई शक्तिशाली क्षत्रियों को जन्म दिया, लड़कों के साथ-साथ लड़कियों को भी, ताकि क्षत्रिय जाति फल-फूल सके।

एवं तद्ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रं क्षत्रियासु तपस्विभिः जातमृध्यत धर्मेण सुदीर्घेणायुषान्वितम् चत्वारोऽपि तदा वर्णा बभूवुर्ब्राह्मणोत्तराः

Thus the Kṣatriya race originated from Kṣatriya women through the ascetic Brāhmana-s. This new generation had long lives and prospered through righteous conduct. The four castes were again established, with Brāhmana-s at the head.

इस प्रकार क्षत्रिय जाति की उत्पत्ति क्षत्रिय महिलाओं से तपस्वी ब्राह्मणों के माध्यम से हुई। इस नई पीढ़ी की आयु लंबी थी और वह धार्मिक आचरण से समृद्ध हुई। चार जातियाँ फिर से स्थापित हुईं, जिनमें ब्राह्मण प्रमुख थे।

अभ्यगच्छन्नृतौ नारीं न कामान्नानृतौ तथा तथैवान्यानि भूतानि तिर्यग्योनिगतान्यपि ऋतौ दारांश्च गच्छन्ति तदा स्म भरतर्षभ

At that time, every man went to his wife only when she was in season, nor for lust, nor when she was not in season. O bull of the Bhārata lineage! All other beings, even those that were not human, also went to their wives at the right season.

उस समय हर आदमी अपनी पत्नी के पास तभी जाता था जब वह ऋतु में होती थी, न वासना के लिए, न जब वह ऋतु में होती थी। हे भरत वंश के बैल! अन्य सभी प्राणी, यहाँ तक कि वे जो मनुष्य नहीं थे, भी सही समय पर अपनी पत्नियों के पास गए।

ततोऽवर्धन्त धर्मेण सहस्रशतजीविनः ताः प्रजाः पृथिवीपाल धर्मव्रतपरायणाः आधिभिर्व्याधिभिश्चैव विमुक्ताः सर्वशो नराः

Thus they prospered in a righteous way and lived for hundreds and thousands of years. O ruler of the earth! All subjects faithfully followed dharma and the right rituals. All men were free from sorrow and disease.

इस प्रकार वे धार्मिक तरीके से समृद्ध हुए और सैकड़ों और हजारों वर्षों तक जीवित रहे। हे पृथ्वी के शासक! सभी प्रजा ईमानदारी से धर्म और सही अनुष्ठानों का पालन करती थी। सभी मनुष्य दुःख और रोग से मुक्त थे।

अथेमां सागरापाङ्गां गां गजेन्द्रगताखिलाम् अध्यतिष्ठत्पुनः क्षत्रं सशैलवनकाननाम्

O king, you who have the gait of an elephant! Kṣatriya-s once again governed the wide earth, with the mountains, forests and groves, with the ocean as the boundary.

हे राजा, आपकी चाल हाथी जैसी है! क्षत्रियों ने एक बार फिर पर्वतों, वनों और उपवनों और समुद्र को सीमा मानकर विस्तृत पृथ्वी पर शासन किया।

प्रशासति पुनः क्षत्रे धर्मेणेमां वसुंधराम् ब्राह्मणाद्यास्तदा वर्णा लेभिरे मुदमुत्तमाम्

When the earth was again governed righteously by the Kṣatriya-s, the other castes, with Brāhmana-s at their head, were filled with immense joy.

जब पृथ्वी पर फिर से क्षत्रियों का धर्मपूर्वक शासन हुआ, तो ब्राह्मणों को प्रधान मानकर अन्य जातियाँ अत्यधिक आनंद से भर गईं।

कामक्रोधोद्भवान्दोषान्निरस्य च नराधिपाः दण्डं दण्ड्येषु धर्मेण प्रणयन्तोऽन्वपालयन्

All the rulers of men were freed from the sins of lust and anger and, punishing righteously those who deserved to be punished, they protected their subjects.

मनुष्यों के सभी शासक काम और क्रोध के पापों से मुक्त हो गए और, जो लोग दंड के पात्र थे, उन्हें उचित दंड देकर, उन्होंने अपनी प्रजा की रक्षा की।

तथा धर्मपरे क्षत्रे सहस्राक्षः शतक्रतुः स्वादु देशे च काले च ववर्षाप्याययन्प्रजाः

On seeing that the Kṣatriya-s followed dharma, the one with thousand eyes and performer of a hundred sacrifices poured down sweet rain at the right time and the right place, so that subjects prospered.

यह देखकर कि क्षत्रिय लोग धर्म का पालन कर रहे हैं, हजार आंखों वाले और सैकड़ों यज्ञ करने वाले ने सही समय और सही स्थान पर मीठी वर्षा की, जिससे प्रजा समृद्ध हुई।

न बाल एव म्रियते तदा कश्चिन्नराधिप न च स्त्रियं प्रजानाति कश्चिदप्राप्तयौवनः

O ruler of men! No child died then. No one knew a woman before attaining the right age.

हे मनुष्यों के शासक! तब किसी बच्चे की मौत नहीं हुई. सही उम्र पाने से पहले किसी महिला को कोई नहीं जानता था।

एवमायुष्मतीभिस्तु प्रजाभिर्भरतर्षभ इयं सागरपर्यन्ता समापूर्यत मेदिनी

O best of the Bhārata lineage! Right up to the shores of the ocean, the earth was full of people who lived for a long time.

हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! समुद्र के तट तक, पृथ्वी ऐसे लोगों से भरी हुई थी जो लंबे समय तक जीवित रहे।

ईजिरे च महायज्ञैः क्षत्रिया बहुदक्षिणैः साङ्गोपनिषदान्वेदान्विप्राश्चाधीयते तदा

Kṣatriya-s performed great sacrifices in which a lot of alms were given. The Brāhmana-s studied the Veda-s, the Vedāṅga-s and the Upaniṣad-s.

क्षत्रियों ने बड़े-बड़े यज्ञ किये जिनमें बहुत-सी भिक्षा दी जाती थी। ब्राह्मणों ने वेदों, वेदांगों और उपनिषदों का अध्ययन किया।

न च विक्रीणते ब्रह्म ब्राह्मणाः स्म तदा नृप न च शूद्रसमाभ्याशे वेदानुच्चारयन्त्युत

O king! At that time, no Brāhmaṇa sold the knowledge of the brāhman. Nor were the Veda-s recited in the hearing of Śūdra-s.

हे राजा! उस समय कोई भी ब्राह्मण ब्राह्मण ज्ञान नहीं बेचता था। न ही शूद्रों के श्रवण में वेदों का पाठ किया जाता था।

कारयन्तः कृषिं गोभिस्तथा वैश्याः क्षिताविह न गामयुञ्जन्त धुरि कृशाङ्गाश्चाप्यजीवयन्

The Vaiśya-s were engaged in farming and tilled the earth well with cattle, never yoking cows to ploughs and taking care of the lean ones.

वैश्य खेती में लगे हुए थे और मवेशियों से पृथ्वी को अच्छी तरह से जोतते थे, कभी गायों को हल में नहीं जोड़ते थे और दुबली गायों की देखभाल करते थे।

फेनपांश्च तथा वत्सान्न दुहन्ति स्म मानवाः न कूटमानैर्वणिजः पण्यं विक्रीणते तदा

Men did not milk cows whose calves were still drinking the froth. No seller sold goods with false scales.

पुरुष उन गायों का दूध नहीं निकालते जिनके बछड़े अभी भी झाग पी रहे हों। किसी भी विक्रेता ने झूठे तराजू से सामान नहीं बेचा।

कर्माणि च नरव्याघ्र धर्मोपेतानि मानवाः धर्ममेवानुपश्यन्तश्चक्रुर्धर्मपरायणाः

O tiger among men! Men thus performed all acts with their eyes on dharma and followed the righteous path in every way.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! इस प्रकार मनुष्य सभी कार्य धर्म की दृष्टि से करते थे और हर प्रकार से धर्म के मार्ग पर चलते थे।

स्वकर्मनिरताश्चासन्सर्वे वर्णा नराधिप एवं तदा नरव्याघ्र धर्मो न ह्रसते क्वचित्

O ruler of men! Men of all castes followed the respective duties of their own castes. O tiger among men! At that time, there was no decline from the path of dharma.

हे मनुष्यों के शासक! सभी जातियों के मनुष्य अपनी-अपनी जाति के कर्तव्यों का पालन करते थे। हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! उस समय धर्म के मार्ग से कोई पतन नहीं हुआ।

काले गावः प्रसूयन्ते नार्यश्च भरतर्षभ फलन्त्यृतुषु वृक्षाश्च पुष्पाणि च फलानि च

O bull of the Bhārata lineage! Both women and cows gave birth at the right time. Trees bore flowers and fruit in the right seasons.

हे भरत वंश के बैल! महिलाओं और गायों दोनों ने सही समय पर बच्चे को जन्म दिया। पेड़ों पर सही मौसम में फूल और फल आते हैं।

एवं कृतयुगे सम्यग्वर्तमाने तदा नृप आपूर्यत मही कृत्स्ना प्राणिभिर्बहुभिर्भृशम्

O king! With Kṛta Yuga having thus arrived successfully at that time, the entire earth was filled with many beings.

हे राजा! इस प्रकार उस समय कृत युग के सफलतापूर्वक आगमन के साथ, पूरी पृथ्वी कई प्राणियों से भर गई थी।

ततः समुदिते लोके मानुषे भरतर्षभ असुरा जज्ञिरे क्षेत्रे राज्ञां मनुजपुंगव

O bull of the Bhārata lineage and lord of men! When the world was in such a flourishing state, the āsura-s began to take birth in royal dynasties.

हे भरत वंश के बैल और मनुष्यों के स्वामी! जब दुनिया इतनी समृद्ध स्थिति में थी, असुरों ने शाही राजवंशों में जन्म लेना शुरू कर दिया।

आदित्यैर्हि तदा दैत्या बहुशो निर्जिता युधि ऐश्वर्याद्भ्रंशिताश्चापि संबभूवुः क्षिताविह

Having been often defeated in battle by the gods, the sons of Diti were dislodged from heaven and their prosperity, and began to take birth on earth.

देवताओं द्वारा युद्ध में बार-बार पराजित होने के कारण दिति के पुत्र स्वर्ग और अपनी समृद्धि से बेदखल हो गए और पृथ्वी पर जन्म लेने लगे।

इह देवत्वमिच्छन्तो मानुषेषु मनस्विनः जज्ञिरे भुवि भूतेषु तेषु तेष्वसुरा विभो

O lord of kings! Wishing to attain divinity in the world of men, the powerful demons took birth as different beings —

हे राजाओं के स्वामी! मनुष्यों की दुनिया में देवत्व प्राप्त करने की इच्छा से, शक्तिशाली राक्षसों ने विभिन्न प्राणियों के रूप में जन्म लिया -

गोष्वश्वेषु च राजेन्द्र खरोष्ट्रमहिषेषु च क्रव्यादेषु च भूतेषु गजेषु च मृगेषु च

cows, horses, asses, camels, buf faloes, predatory beasts, elephants and deer.

गायें, घोड़े, गधे, ऊँट, जंगली जानवर, हिंसक जानवर, हाथी और हिरण।

जातैरिह महीपाल जायमानैश्च तैर्मही न शशाकात्मनात्मानमियं धारयितुं धरा

O ruler of the earth! On account of those that were already born and those that were being born, the earth was no longer capable of supporting herself.

हे पृथ्वी के शासक! जो पहले ही पैदा हो चुके थे और जो पैदा हो रहे थे, उनके कारण पृथ्वी अब अपना भरण-पोषण करने में सक्षम नहीं थी।

अथ जाता महीपालाः केचिद्बलसमन्विताः दितेः पुत्रा दनोश्चैव तस्माल्लोकादिह च्युताः

Some of Diti and Danu's offspring, dislodged from heaven, took birth as kings on earth, powerful and insolent.

दिति और दनु की कुछ संतानों ने स्वर्ग से बेदखल होकर पृथ्वी पर शक्तिशाली और ढीठ राजाओं के रूप में जन्म लिया।

वीर्यवन्तोऽवलिप्तास्ते नानारूपधरा महीम् इमां सागरपर्यन्तां परीयुररिमर्दनाः

With great valour and strength, they covered the earth in many forms. Crushing their enemies, they oppressed the earth, right up to the shores of the ocean.

उन्होंने बड़े पराक्रम और बल से अनेक रूपों में पृथ्वी को आच्छादित कर लिया। अपने शत्रुओं को कुचलते हुए, उन्होंने समुद्र के तट तक पृथ्वी पर अत्याचार किया।

ब्राह्मणान्क्षत्रियान्वैश्याञ्शूद्रांश्चैवाप्यपीडयन् अन्यानि चैव भूतानि पीडयामासुरोजसा

They began to oppress the Brāhmana-s, the Kṣatriya-s, the Vaiśya-s and the Śūdra-s. They persecuted all other creatures with their power.

उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों, क्षत्रियों, वैश्यों और शूद्रों पर अत्याचार करना शुरू कर दिया। उन्होंने अपनी शक्ति से अन्य सभी प्राणियों को सताया।

त्रासयन्तो विनिघ्नन्तस्तांस्तान्भूतगणांश्च ते विचेरुः सर्वतो राजन्महीं शतसहस्रशः

O king! Terrorizing and killing all the myriad beings, they roamed over the earth in their hundreds and thousands.

हे राजा! सभी असंख्य प्राणियों को आतंकित और मारते हुए, वे सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में पृथ्वी पर घूमते रहे।

आश्रमस्थान्महर्षींश्च धर्षयन्तस्ततस्ततः अब्रह्मण्या वीर्यमदा मत्ता मदबलेन च

Devoid of righteousness and drunk with the power of their valour and strength, they even regularly persecuted the maharṣi-s in their hermitages.

धर्म से रहित और अपने पराक्रम तथा बल के नशे में चूर वे नियमित रूप से महर्षियों को उनके आश्रमों में सताते रहते थे।

एवं वीर्यबलोत्सिक्तैर्भूरियं तैर्महासुरैः पीड्यमाना महीपाल ब्रह्माणमुपचक्रमे

O ruler of the earth! Oppressed by the great āsura-s, who were swollen because of valour, power and strength, the earth approached Brahmā.

हे पृथ्वी के शासक! वीरता, शक्ति और पराक्रम से फूले हुए महान असुरों से त्रस्त होकर पृथ्वी ब्रह्मा के पास पहुंची।

न हीमां पवनो राजन्न नागा न नगा महीम् तदा धारयितुं शेकुराक्रान्तां दानवैर्बलात्

O king! At that time, invaded by the strength of the dānava-s, the wind, the mountain or the serpent could no longer support the earth.

हे राजा! उस समय दानवों के बल से आक्रमण करने पर वायु, पर्वत अथवा सर्प पृथ्वी को सहारा नहीं दे सकते थे।

ततो मही महीपाल भारार्ता भयपीडिता जगाम शरणं देवं सर्वभूतपितामहम्

O ruler of the earth! Therefore, the earth, frightened and over burdened, sought refuge with the god who is the grandfather of all beings.

हे पृथ्वी के शासक! इसलिए, भयभीत और अत्यधिक बोझ से दबी पृथ्वी ने भगवान की शरण ली, जो सभी प्राणियों के दादा हैं।

सा संवृतं महाभागैर्देवद्विजमहर्षिभिः ददर्श देवं ब्रह्माणं लोककर्तारमव्ययम्

She saw the great and eternal god Brahmā, the creator of the worlds, seated, surrounded by gods, Brahmānas and maharṣi-s.

उसने संसार के रचयिता, महान और शाश्वत भगवान ब्रह्मा को देवताओं, ब्राह्मणों और महर्षियों से घिरे हुए बैठे हुए देखा।

गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च बन्दिकर्मसु निष्ठितैः वन्द्यमानं मुदोपेतैर्ववन्दे चैनमेत्य सा

Gāndharva-s and āpsara-s were engaged in divine tasks, worshipping him through hymns and chants.

गंधर्व और अप्सराएँ दिव्य कार्यों में लगे हुए थे, भजन और मंत्रों के माध्यम से उनकी पूजा करते थे।

अथ विज्ञापयामास भूमिस्तं शरणार्थिनी संनिधौ लोकपालानां सर्वेषामेव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In the presence of all the rulers of the worlds, the earth saluted him and sought refuge, narrating all that had happened.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पृथ्वी ने सब लोकों के हाकिमों के साम्हने उसे नमस्कार किया, और जो कुछ घटित हुआ था, सब बताकर शरण मांगी।

तत्प्रधानात्मनस्तस्य भूमेः कृत्यं स्वयंभुवः पूर्वमेवाभवद्राजन्विदितं परमेष्ठिनः

But the reason for the earth's arrival was already known to the omniscient self-creator who dwells high above and is the source of matter.

लेकिन पृथ्वी के आगमन का कारण पहले से ही सर्वज्ञ स्वयं-निर्माता को पता था जो ऊपर रहता है और पदार्थ का स्रोत है।

स्रष्टा हि जगतः कस्मान्न संबुध्येत भारत सुरासुराणां लोकानामशेषेण मनोगतम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He is the creator of the world. How could he not know what was in the minds of all beings, including the gods and the demons?

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वह संसार का रचयिता है। वह कैसे नहीं जान सका कि देवताओं और राक्षसों सहित सभी प्राणियों के मन में क्या था?

तामुवाच महाराज भूमिं भूमिपतिर्विभुः प्रभवः सर्वभूतानामीशः शंभुः प्रजापतिः

O great king! The source of all beings, Prajāpati, Īśa, Śambhu, the lord of the earth, spoke to earth.

हे महान राजा! सभी प्राणियों के स्रोत, प्रजापति, ईश, शंभू, पृथ्वी के स्वामी, ने पृथ्वी से बात की।

यदर्थमसि संप्राप्ता मत्सकाशं वसुंधरे तदर्थं संनियोक्ष्यामि सर्वानेव दिवौकसः

"O Vasundharā! So as to accomplish the task for which you have come to me, I will appoint all those who live in heaven."

"हे वसुंधरा! जिस कार्य के लिए तुम मेरे पास आई हो, उसे पूरा करने के लिए मैं स्वर्ग में रहने वाले सभी लोगों को नियुक्त करूंगा।"

इत्युक्त्वा स महीं देवो ब्रह्मा राजन्विसृज्य च आदिदेश तदा सर्वान्विबुधान्भूतकृत्स्वयम्

O king! Having thus addressed the earth, the god Brahmā bid her farewell, and then the creator of all beings commanded the gods.

हे राजा! इस प्रकार पृथ्वी को संबोधित करके, भगवान ब्रह्मा ने उसे विदा किया, और फिर सभी प्राणियों के निर्माता ने देवताओं को आदेश दिया।

अस्या भूमेर्निरसितुं भारं भागैः पृथक्पृथक् अस्यामेव प्रसूयध्वं विरोधायेति चाब्रवीत्

"So as to free earth from this burden, all of you go and ensure parts of you are born on earth and seek the conflicts you want."

"पृथ्वी को इस बोझ से मुक्त करने के लिए, आप सभी जाएं और सुनिश्चित करें कि आपके कुछ हिस्से पृथ्वी पर पैदा हों और उन संघर्षों की तलाश करें जो आप चाहते हैं।"

तथैव च समानीय गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणान् उवाच भगवान्सर्वानिदं वचनमुत्तमम् स्वैरंशैः संप्रसूयध्वं यथेष्टं मानुषेष्विति

Then the great lord summoned the hosts of gāndharva-s and āpsara-s and spoke to them these supreme words: "Go and ensure that parts of you are born on earth in the forms that please you."

तब महान भगवान ने गंधर्वों और अप्सराओं की सेना को बुलाया और उनसे ये सर्वोच्च शब्द बोले: "जाओ और सुनिश्चित करो कि तुम्हारे कुछ अंश पृथ्वी पर उन रूपों में पैदा हों जो तुम्हें प्रसन्न करें।"

अथ शक्रादयः सर्वे श्रुत्वा सुरगुरोर्वचः तथ्यमर्थ्यं च पथ्यं च तस्य ते जगृहुस्तदा

On hearing these words of the foremost among the gods, words that were appropriate and full of meaning, all the gods, with Śākra at their head, accepted them.

देवताओं में श्रेष्ठ के इन शब्दों को सुनकर, जो उचित और अर्थ से भरे हुए थे, सभी देवताओं ने, जिनके सिर पर शक्र था, उन्हें स्वीकार कर लिया।

अथ ते सर्वशोंऽशैः स्वैर्गन्तुं भूमिं कृतक्षणाः नारायणममित्रघ्नं वैकुण्ठमुपचक्रमुः

Impatient to go to earth and be born there in their respective parts, they went to Vaikuṇṭha, to Nārāyaṇa,

पृथ्वी पर जाने और वहां अपने-अपने भागों में जन्म लेने के लिए अधीर होकर, वे वैकुंठ, नारायण के पास गए,

यः स चक्रगदापाणिः पीतवासासितप्रभः पद्मनाभः सुरारिघ्नः पृथुचार्वञ्चितेक्षणः

the wielder of the cakra and the gada, he who is dressed in yellow, he who is radiant white, he who destroys the enemies of the gods, he who has the lotus on his navel and he whose eyes are soft, wide and sloped downwards.

चक्र और गदा धारण करने वाला, पीला वस्त्र धारण करने वाला, श्वेत रंग का, देवताओं के शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाला, नाभि पर कमल और आंखें कोमल, चौड़ी और नीचे की ओर झुकी हुई होती हैं।

तं भुवः शोधनायेन्द्र उवाच पुरुषोत्तमम् अंशेनावतरस्वेति तथेत्याह च तं हरिः
