सूत उवाच एवमुक्त्वा ततः श्रीमान्मन्त्रिभिश्चानुमोदितः आरुरोह प्रतिज्ञां स सर्पसत्राय पार्थिवः ब्रह्मन्भरतशार्दूलो राजा पारिक्षितस्तदा

Sauti said: When the illustrious king uttered these words, the ministers approved and the king took an oath that he would undertake a snake-sacrifice. Pārīkṣit's son and the king who was a tiger of the Bhārata lineage,

सौति ने कहा: जब प्रतापी राजा ने ये शब्द कहे, तो मंत्रियों ने अनुमोदन किया और राजा ने शपथ ली कि वह सर्प-यज्ञ करेगा। परीक्षित के पुत्र और राजा जो भरत वंश के एक बाघ थे,

पुरोहितमथाहूय ऋत्विजं वसुधाधिपः अब्रवीद्वाक्यसंपन्नः संपदर्थकरं वचः

The lord of the earth, then summoned his priest and officiating priests who knew about the sacrifice. He who was eloquent in the uttered words that would make the deed successful said,

पृथ्वी के स्वामी ने तब अपने पुजारी और कार्यवाहक पुजारी को बुलाया जो बलिदान के बारे में जानते थे। वह जो बोलने में कुशल था, जिससे कार्य सफल हो सके, उसने कहा,

यो मे हिंसितवांस्तातं तक्षकः स दुरात्मवान् प्रतिकुर्यां यथा तस्य तद्भवन्तो ब्रुवन्तु मे

"I must act against the evil Takṣaka who brought violence to my father. Please tell me what I must do.

"मुझे उस दुष्ट तक्षक के विरुद्ध कार्रवाई करनी चाहिए जिसने मेरे पिता पर हिंसा की थी। कृपया मुझे बताएं कि मुझे क्या करना चाहिए।

अपि तत्कर्म विदितं भवतां येन पन्नगम् तक्षकं संप्रदीप्तेऽग्नौ प्राप्स्येऽहं सहबान्धवम्

Do you know of an act whereby the snake Takṣaka and his relatives can be hurled into the blazing fire?

क्या आप किसी ऐसे कृत्य के बारे में जानते हैं जिसके द्वारा तक्षक नाग और उसके रिश्तेदारों को धधकती आग में फेंक दिया जा सकता है?

यथा तेन पिता मह्यं पूर्वं दग्धो विषाग्निना तथाहमपि तं पापं दग्धुमिच्छामि पन्नगम्

Just as my father was earlier burnt with the poison, I wish to burn that evil snake."

जैसे पहले मेरे पिता को विष से जला दिया गया था, वैसे ही मैं उस दुष्ट साँप को जलाना चाहती हूँ।”

ऋत्विज ऊचुः अस्ति राजन्महत्सत्रं त्वदर्थं देवनिर्मितम् सर्पसत्रमिति ख्यातं पुराणे कथ्यते नृप

The officiating priests replied: "O king! There is a sacrifice that the gods have recommended for those like you. It is known as the snake-sacrifice and it is described in the ancient tales.

कार्यवाहक पुजारियों ने उत्तर दिया: "हे राजा! एक बलिदान है जिसे देवताओं ने आप जैसे लोगों के लिए अनुशंसित किया है। इसे साँप-बलि के रूप में जाना जाता है और इसका वर्णन प्राचीन कथाओं में किया गया है।

आहर्ता तस्य सत्रस्य त्वन्नान्योऽस्ति नराधिप इति पौराणिकाः प्राहुरस्माकं चास्ति स क्रतुः

O lord of men! No one but you can offer this sacrifice. Those who know the ancient tales have told us there is such a sacrifice and we know it."

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आपके अलावा कोई भी यह बलिदान नहीं दे सकता। जो लोग प्राचीन कहानियाँ जानते हैं उन्होंने हमें बताया है कि ऐसा एक बलिदान होता है और हम इसे जानते हैं।"

सूत उवाच एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिर्मेने सर्पं हि तक्षकम् हुताशनमुखं दीप्तं प्रविष्टमिति सत्तम

Sauti said: O supreme one! Thus addressed, the rājarṣi thought that Takṣaka had already been hurled into the mouth of a blazing fire and burnt.

सौति ने कहा: हे परम! इस प्रकार संबोधित करने पर, राजर्षि ने सोचा कि तक्षक को पहले ही धधकती आग के मुँह में डाल दिया गया है और जला दिया गया है।

ततोऽब्रवीन्मन्त्रविदस्तान्राजा ब्राह्मणांस्तदा आहरिष्यामि तत्सत्रं संभाराः संभ्रियन्तु मे

The king then told the Brāhmana-s who were learned in the mantra-s, "I will perform the sacrifice. Collect the required ingredients."

तब राजा ने मंत्र-पंडित ब्राह्मणों से कहा, "मैं यज्ञ करूंगा। आवश्यक सामग्री एकत्र करो।"

ततस्ते ऋत्विजस्तस्य शास्त्रतो द्विजसत्तम देशं तं मापयामासुर्यज्ञायतनकारणात् यथावज्ज्ञानविदुषः सर्वे बुद्ध्या परं गताः

O supreme among the Brāhmana-s! Thereupon the officiating priests, who were hard in their resolve and learned in the śāstra-s, measured out a piece of land as the sacrificial platform, in accordance with the prescribed rites.

हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! इसके बाद स्थानापन्न पुजारियों ने, जो अपने संकल्प में दृढ़ थे और शास्त्रों में विद्वान थे, निर्धारित संस्कारों के अनुसार, यज्ञ स्थल के रूप में भूमि का एक टुकड़ा मापा।

ऋद्ध्या परमया युक्तमिष्टं द्विजगणायुतम् प्रभूतधनधान्याढ्यमृत्विग्भिः सुनिवेशितम्

It was graced by the presence of many learned Brāhmana-s and adorned with every valuable object, abundant quantities of riches and foodgrains.

यह कई विद्वान ब्राह्मणों की उपस्थिति से सुशोभित था और हर मूल्यवान वस्तु, प्रचुर मात्रा में धन और खाद्यान्न से सुशोभित था।

निर्माय चापि विधिवद्यज्ञायतनमीप्सितम् राजानं दीक्षयामासुः सर्पसत्राप्तये तदा

Before the snake-sacrifice could begin, they then instated the king on this sacrificial platform.

सर्प-यज्ञ शुरू होने से पहले, उन्होंने राजा को इस यज्ञ मंच पर स्थापित किया।

इदं चासीत्तत्र पूर्वं सर्पसत्रे भविष्यति निमित्तं महदुत्पन्नं यज्ञविघ्नकरं तदा

Earlier, when the sacrificial platform was being built and the sacrifice had not started, a great incident occurred that suggested the sacrifice might be disrupted.

इससे पहले, जब यज्ञ मंच बनाया जा रहा था और यज्ञ शुरू नहीं हुआ था, एक बड़ी घटना घटी जिससे लगा कि यज्ञ बाधित हो सकता है।

यज्ञस्यायतने तस्मिन्क्रियमाणे वचोऽब्रवीत् स्थपतिर्बुद्धिसंपन्नो वास्तुविद्याविशारदः

There was a man who was a sūta. He was an extremely wise builder and one who was skilled in the knowledge of architecture. He was also a raconteur of ancient tales.

एक आदमी था जो सूत था। वह अत्यंत बुद्धिमान बिल्डर और वास्तुकला के ज्ञान में निपुण था। वह प्राचीन कथाओं के भी रचयिता थे।

इत्यब्रवीत्सूत्रधारः सूतः पौराणिकस्तदा यस्मिन्देशे च काले च मापनेयं प्रवर्तिता ब्राह्मणं कारणं कृत्वा नायं संस्थास्यते क्रतुः

This bard said, "The land on which the platform was constructed and the time at which it was measured indicate that this sacrifice will not be completed. A Brāhmaṇa will be the cause."

इस भाट ने कहा, "जिस भूमि पर चबूतरा बनाया गया था और जिस समय इसे मापा गया था, उससे संकेत मिलता है कि यह बलिदान पूरा नहीं होगा। एक ब्राह्मण इसका कारण होगा।"

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु राजा स प्राग्दीक्षाकालमब्रवीत् क्षत्तारं नेह मे कश्चिदज्ञातः प्रविशेदिति

On hearing this, before being instated, the king instructed the door-keeper that no one should be allowed entry without his knowledge.

यह सुनकर राजा ने उपदेश देने से पहले द्वारपाल को निर्देश दिया कि उसकी जानकारी के बिना किसी को भी प्रवेश न दिया जाए।

ततः कर्म प्रववृते सर्पसत्रे विधानतः पर्यक्रामंश्च विधिवत्स्वे स्वे कर्मणि याजकाः

The snake-sacrifice then started according to the prescribed norms. The officiating priests, who were learned in their respective duties, went about prescribed tasks.

फिर निर्धारित नियमों के अनुसार सर्प-यज्ञ प्रारम्भ हुआ। कार्यवाहक पुजारी, जो अपने-अपने कर्तव्यों में निपुण थे, निर्धारित कार्य करते थे।

परिधाय कृष्णवासांसि धूमसंरक्तलोचनाः जुहुवुर्मन्त्रवच्चैव समिद्धं जातवेदसम्

They dressed themselves in black garments and their eyes became red from the smoke. Chanting mantra-s, they offered oblations into the sacrificial fire.

उन्होंने काले वस्त्र पहने और उनकी आँखें धुएँ से लाल हो गईं। मंत्रोच्चारण करते हुए उन्होंने यज्ञ अग्नि में आहुतियां दीं।

कम्पयन्तश्च सर्वेषामुरगाणां मनांसि ते सर्पानाजुहुवुस्तत्र सर्वानग्निमुखे तदा

As they poured oblations into the mouth of the fire and uttered the names of the snakes, the hearts of the snakes trembled in fear.

जैसे ही उन्होंने आग के मुँह में आहुतियाँ डालीं और साँपों के नाम बोले, साँपों के दिल डर से कांपने लगे।

ततः सर्पाः समापेतुः प्रदीप्ते हव्यवाहने विवेष्टमानाः कृपणा आह्वयन्तः परस्परम्

Thereafter, the snakes dropped into the blazing flames, wretched and screaming piteously at each other.

इसके बाद, सांप धधकती हुई आग में गिर गए, एक-दूसरे पर बुरी तरह चिल्ला रहे थे।

विस्फुरन्तः श्वसन्तश्च वेष्टयन्तस्तथा परे पुच्छैः शिरोभिश्च भृशं चित्रभानुं प्रपेदिरे

They swelled, breathed hard and intertwined their heads and tails. In large numbers, they fell into the blazing fire —

वे सूज गए, जोर-जोर से सांस लेने लगे और अपने सिर और पूंछ आपस में गुंथ गए। बड़ी संख्या में वे धधकती आग में गिर गये -

श्वेताः कृष्णाश्च नीलाश्च स्थविराः शिशवस्तथा रुवन्तो भैरवान्नादान्पेतुर्दीप्ते विभावसौ

white, black, blue, old and young. Crying out terrible screams, they fell into the lofty and blazing flames,

सफ़ेद, काला, नीला, बूढ़ा और जवान। भयानक चीखें चिल्लाते हुए वे ऊंची और धधकती आग की लपटों में गिर पड़े।

एवं शतसहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च अवशानि विनष्टानि पन्नगानां द्विजोत्तम

in hundreds, thousands, millions and tens of millions. O supreme among Brāhmana-s! Many snakes perished powerless.

सैकड़ों, हजारों, लाखों और करोड़ों में। हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! अनेक साँप शक्तिहीन होकर नष्ट हो गये।

इन्दुरा इव तत्रान्ये हस्तिहस्ता इवापरे मत्ता इव च मातङ्गा महाकाया महाबलाः

Among those which perished, some were small as rats, others large as trunks of elephants, or gigantic and immensely strong like mad elephants.

जो लोग नष्ट हुए, उनमें से कुछ चूहे जितने छोटे थे, कुछ हाथी की सूंड जितने बड़े, या पागल हाथियों जैसे विशाल और अत्यधिक शक्तिशाली थे।

उच्चावचाश्च बहवो नानावर्णा विषोल्बणाः घोराश्च परिघप्रख्या दन्दशूका महाबलाः प्रपेतुरग्नावुरगा मातृवाग्दण्डपीडिताः

Snakes of many colours, poisonous, terrible, like clubs and with immense strength, fell into the fire in large numbers, as a consequence of their mother's curse.

अनेक रंग-बिरंगे, विषैले, भयानक, गदा के समान तथा अपार बल वाले साँप अपनी माता के श्राप के फलस्वरूप बड़ी संख्या में अग्नि में गिर पड़े।
