सूत उवाच गतमात्रं तु भर्तारं जरत्कारुरवेदयत् भ्रातुस्त्वरितमागम्य यथातथ्यं तपोधन

Sauti said: O one blessed with the power of austerities! As soon as her husband left, Jaratkāru went to her brother and told him what had happened.

सौति ने कहा: हे तपस्या की शक्ति से धन्य! जैसे ही उसका पति चला गया, जरत्कारु अपने भाई के पास गई और उसे बताया कि क्या हुआ था।

ततः स भुजगश्रेष्ठः श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम् उवाच भगिनीं दीनां तदा दीनतरः स्वयम्

The best of the snakes heard this unpleasant news and told his sister, who was more miserable than he was,

सर्पों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ ने यह अप्रिय समाचार सुना और अपनी बहन को, जो उससे भी अधिक दुखी थी, बताया।

जानासि भद्रे यत्कार्यं प्रदाने कारणं च यत् पन्नगानां हितार्थाय पुत्रस्ते स्यात्ततो यदि

"O fortunate one! You know what had to be done and why you were given. A son was supposed to be born for the welfare of the snakes.

"हे भाग्यशाली! आप जानते हैं कि क्या करना था और आपको क्यों दिया गया था। साँपों के कल्याण के लिए एक पुत्र का जन्म होना चाहिए था।

स सर्पसत्रात्किल नो मोक्षयिष्यति वीर्यवान् एवं पितामहः पूर्वमुक्तवान्मां सुरैः सह

That valorous one was supposed to have saved us from the snake-sacrifice. In ancient times, this is what the grandfather and the gods told me.

माना जाता है कि उस वीर ने हमें सर्प-यज्ञ से बचाया था। प्राचीन काल में दादा और देवताओं ने मुझसे यही कहा था।

अप्यस्ति गर्भः सुभगे तस्मात्ते मुनिसत्तमात् न चेच्छाम्यफलं तस्य दारकर्म मनीषिणः

O fortunate one! Have you conceived through that best of sages? It is my wish that the wise man's marriage should not be fruitless.

हे भाग्यवान! क्या आपने उन श्रेष्ठ ऋषियों के द्वारा कल्पना की है? मेरी इच्छा है कि बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति का विवाह निष्फल न हो।

कामं च मम न न्याय्यं प्रष्टुं त्वां कार्यमीदृशम् किं तु कार्यगरीयस्त्वात्ततस्त्वाहमचूचुदम्

Without a doubt, it is not appropriate that I should ask you a question on such a subject. But the subject is too serious for me not to ask you.

निःसंदेह यह उचित नहीं है कि मैं ऐसे विषय पर आपसे प्रश्न पूछूँ। लेकिन विषय इतना गंभीर है कि मैं आपसे नहीं पूछ सकता।

दुर्वासतां विदित्वा च भर्तुस्तेऽतितपस्विनः नैनमन्वागमिष्यामि कदाचिद्धि शपेत्स माम्

I know that your husband is always engaged in austerities and is prone to anger. I shall not follow him, because he might curse me.

मैं जानता हूं कि आपके पति सदैव तपस्या में लगे रहते हैं और क्रोध करने वाले होते हैं। मैं उसके पीछे नहीं चलूँगा, क्योंकि कहीं वह मुझे शाप न दे दे।

आचक्ष्व भद्रे भर्तुस्त्वं सर्वमेव विचेष्टितम् शल्यमुद्धर मे घोरं भद्रे हृदि चिरस्थितम्

O fortunate one! Tell me what your husband has done and thereby pull out the terrible stake that has been implanted for a long time in my heart."

हे भाग्यवान! मुझे बताओ कि तुम्हारे पति ने क्या किया है और इस तरह मेरे दिल में लंबे समय से लगाए गए भयानक काठ को बाहर निकालो।"

जरत्कारुस्ततो वाक्यमित्युक्ता प्रत्यभाषत आश्वासयन्ती संतप्तं वासुकिं पन्नगेश्वरम्

Being thus asked, Jaratkāru consoled the tor mented Vāsuki, king of snakes, and said,

इस प्रकार पूछे जाने पर, जरत्कारु ने सर्पों के राजा वासुकी को सांत्वना दी और कहा,

पृष्टो मयापत्यहेतोः स महात्मा महातपाः अस्तीत्युदरमुद्दिश्य ममेदं गतवांश्च सः

"I asked the great-souled and great ascetic about our offspring. He said it is there and left.

"मैंने उस महान आत्मा और महान तपस्वी से हमारी संतान के बारे में पूछा। उन्होंने कहा कि यह वहीं है और चले गए।

स्वैरेष्वपि न तेनाहं स्मरामि वितथं क्वचित् उक्तपूर्वं कुतो राजन्सांपराये स वक्ष्यति

I do not recollect his ever having spoken a lie, even in jest. O king! Why should he then utter a lie on such a serious subject?

मुझे याद नहीं पड़ता कि उन्होंने कभी मजाक में भी झूठ बोला हो। हे राजा! फिर उन्हें इतने गंभीर विषय पर झूठ क्यों बोलना चाहिए?

न संतापस्त्वया कार्यः कार्यं प्रति भुजंगमे उत्पत्स्यति हि ते पुत्रो ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः

He said, "O snake woman! Do not sorrow over the fruit of your action. A son, resplendent as the fire and the sun, will be born to you"

उन्होंने कहा, "हे नागिन! अपने कर्म के फल के बारे में शोक मत करो। तुम्हारे लिए अग्नि और सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी एक पुत्र पैदा होगा।"

इत्युक्त्वा हि स मां भ्रातर्गतो भर्ता तपोवनम् तस्माद्व्येतु परं दुःखं तवेदं मनसि स्थितम्

O brother! Having said this, my husband went away to his hermitage. Let the great distress that preys on your mind be removed."

हे भाई! इतना कहकर मेरे पति अपने आश्रम में चले गये। तुम्हारे मन पर जो महान् क्लेश छाया हुआ है, वह दूर हो जाए।”

एतच्छ्रुत्वा स नागेन्द्रो वासुकिः परया मुदा एवमस्त्विति तद्वाक्यं भगिन्याः प्रत्यगृह्णत

On hearing this, Vāsuki, the king of snakes, was delighted and accepted his sister's words.

यह सुनकर साँपों के राजा वासुकि प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने अपनी बहन की बात मान ली।

सान्त्वमानार्थदानैश्च पूजया चानुरूपया सोदर्यां पूजयामास स्वसारं पन्नगोत्तमः

The best of the snakes worshipped his sister with kindness, appropriate praise, gifts and homage.

सर्वश्रेष्ठ साँपों ने अपनी बहन की दया, उचित प्रशंसा, उपहार और श्रद्धांजलि के साथ पूजा की।

ततः स ववृधे गर्भो महातेजा रविप्रभः यथा सोमो द्विजश्रेष्ठ शुक्लपक्षोदितो दिवि

O best of the Brāhmana-s! The immensely radiant embryo grew in her womb like the luminescent sun, like the moon waxing in the sky during śuklapakṣa.

हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! उसके गर्भ में वह अत्यंत कांतिमान भ्रूण उस प्रकाशमान सूर्य के समान विकसित हुआ, जैसे शुक्लपक्ष में चंद्रमा आकाश में चमक रहा हो।

यथाकालं तु सा ब्रह्मन्प्रजज्ञे भुजगस्वसा कुमारं देवगर्भाभं पितृमातृभयापहम्

O Brāhmaṇa! At the appropriate time, the snake's sister gave birth to a son who was like a divine child, the destroyer of the fears of his father and mother.

हे ब्राह्मण! उचित समय पर सर्प की बहन ने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया जो दिव्य बालक के समान था और अपने माता-पिता के भय का नाश करने वाला था।

ववृधे स च तत्रैव नागराजनिवेशने वेदांश्चाधिजगे साङ्गान्भार्गवाच्च्यवनात्मजात्

He grew up in the house of the king of snakes and studied the Veda-s and the Vedāṅga-s from the sage Cyavana, the son of Bhṛgu.

वह साँपों के राजा के घर में पले-बढ़े और भृगु के पुत्र ऋषि च्यवन से वेद और वेदांग का अध्ययन किया।

चरितव्रतो बाल एव बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्वितः नाम चास्याभवत्ख्यातं लोकेष्वास्तीक इत्युत

Even as a child, he was strict in adherence to his vows and gifted with intelligence, spirituality and qualities. He became famous in the worlds by the name of Āstīka.

एक बच्चे के रूप में भी, वह अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं के पालन में सख्त थे और बुद्धि, आध्यात्मिकता और गुणों से संपन्न थे। वह संसार में आस्तिक नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ।

अस्तीत्युक्त्वा गतो यस्मात्पिता गर्भस्थमेव तम् वनं तस्मादिदं तस्य नामास्तीकेति विश्रुतम्

He was known as Āstīka, because while he was still in his mother's womb, his father went away to the forest, saying "asti".

उन्हें आस्तिक के नाम से जाना जाता था, क्योंकि जब वे अपनी माँ के गर्भ में थे, तब उनके पिता "अस्ति" कहकर वन में चले गये थे।

स बाल एव तत्रस्थश्चरन्नमितबुद्धिमान् गृहे पन्नगराजस्य प्रयत्नात्पर्यरक्ष्यत

Even as a child, he was extremely intelligent. He was carefully watched over in the house of the king of snakes.

एक बच्चे के रूप में भी वह अत्यंत बुद्धिमान थे। साँपों के राजा के घर में उसकी सावधानीपूर्वक निगरानी की जाती थी।

भगवानिव देवेशः शूलपाणिर्हिरण्यदः विवर्धमानः सर्वांस्तान्पन्नगानभ्यहर्षयत्

He was like the golden and illustrious Lord Śūlapāṇi, the lord of the gods. To the great delight of all the snakes, he grew up.

वह देवताओं के स्वामी, स्वर्णिम और शानदार भगवान शुलपाणि की तरह थे। सभी साँपों की बड़ी ख़ुशी के लिए, वह बड़ा हुआ।
