जनमेजय उवाच त्वत्तः श्रुतमिदं ब्रह्मन्देवदानवरक्षसाम् अंशावतरणं सम्यग्गन्धर्वाप्सरसां तथा

Janamejaya said: O Brāhmaṇa! I have heard completely from you the account of the incarnations of deva-s, dānava-s, rākṣasa-s, gāndharva-s and āpsara-s.

जनमेजय ने कहा: हे ब्राह्मण! मैंने आपसे देवों, दानवों, राक्षसों, गंधर्वों और अप्सराओं के अवतारों का वृत्तांत पूरी तरह से सुना है।

इमं तु भूय इच्छामि कुरूणां वंशमादितः कथ्यमानं त्वया विप्र विप्रर्षिगणसंनिधौ

O Brāhmaṇa! I now wish to hear from the beginning the account of the origin of the Kuru lineage. Please narrate it in front of these Brāhmaṇa sages.

हे ब्राह्मण! अब मैं कुरु वंश की उत्पत्ति का वृत्तान्त प्रारम्भ से सुनना चाहता हूँ। कृपया इसे इन ब्राह्मण मुनियों के सामने सुनायें।

वैशंपायन उवाच पौरवाणां वंशकरो दुःषन्तो नाम वीर्यवान् पृथिव्याश्चतुरन्ताया गोप्ता भरतसत्तम

Vaiśampāyana said: O best of the Bhārata lineage! The founder of the Paurava dynasty was the valorous Duḥṣanta.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के श्रेष्ठ! पौरव वंश का संस्थापक वीर दुषान्त था।

चतुर्भागं भुवः कृत्स्नं स भुङ्क्ते मनुजेश्वरः समुद्रावरणांश्चापि देशान्स समितिंजयः

The victorious one protected the entire earth up to its four limits and was the lord of the four quarters of the earth and also regions that are in the middle of the ocean.

विजयी व्यक्ति ने पूरी पृथ्वी की चारों सीमाओं तक रक्षा की और वह पृथ्वी के चारों भागों और समुद्र के मध्य के क्षेत्रों का भी स्वामी था।

आम्लेच्छाटविकान्सर्वान्स भुङ्क्ते रिपुमर्दनः रत्नाकरसमुद्रान्तांश्चातुर्वर्ण्यजनावृतान्

That chastiser of enemies was also lord of the entire country of the mleccha-s, which was populated by the four vārṇa-s and beyond the ocean full of gems.

शत्रुओं को दंडित करने वाला वह म्लेच्छों के पूरे देश का भी स्वामी था, जो चारों वर्णों से बसा हुआ था और रत्नों से भरे समुद्र के पार था।

न वर्णसंकरकरो नाकृष्यकरकृज्जनः न पापकृत्कश्चिदासीत्तस्मिन्राजनि शासति

During this king's rule, there was no mixture of castes and no performer of evil deeds. No one needed to plough the land. No one needed to mine the earth.

इस राजा के शासनकाल में न तो जातियों का मिश्रण था और न ही कोई बुरे कर्म करने वाला था। किसी को जमीन जोतने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ी. किसी को भी धरती पर खनन करने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ी।

धर्म्यां रतिं सेवमाना धर्मार्थावभिपेदिरे तदा नरा नरव्याघ्र तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे

O tiger among men! Everyone was devoted to dharma and everyone acted in accordance with the norms of righteous conduct.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! हर कोई धर्म के प्रति समर्पित था और हर कोई धार्मिक आचरण के मानदंडों के अनुसार कार्य करता था।

नासीच्चोरभयं तात न क्षुधाभयमण्वपि नासीद्व्याधिभयं चापि तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे

O son! While he was the ruler of the land, there was no fear from thieves and no fear from famines. While he was the ruler of the land, there was no fear from disease.

हे वत्स जब तक वह देश का शासक था, तब न चोरों का भय था, न अकाल का भय था। जबकि वह देश का शासक था, बीमारी से कोई डर नहीं था।

स्वैर्धर्मै रेमिरे वर्णा दैवे कर्मणि निःस्पृहाः तमाश्रित्य महीपालमासंश्चैवाकुतोभयाः

All the four vārṇa-s took pleasure in undertaking their own duties, without an eye to the fruits of the action. Depending upon him as a protector of the earth, they confronted no fear from anywhere.

सभी चार वर्णों ने कर्म के फल की परवाह किए बिना, अपने-अपने कर्तव्यों का पालन करने में आनंद लिया। पृथ्वी के रक्षक के रूप में उन पर भरोसा करते हुए, उन्हें कहीं से भी किसी डर का सामना नहीं करना पड़ा।

कालवर्षी च पर्जन्यः सस्यानि फलवन्ति च सर्वरत्नसमृद्धा च मही वसुमती तदा

Pārjanya showered down rain at the appropriate time and the crops were succulent. The earth abounded with great stores of riches then.

पर्जन्य में उचित समय पर वर्षा हुई और फसलें रसीली हो गईं। उस समय पृथ्वी धन-संपत्ति के अपार भण्डार से भरपूर थी।

स चाद्भुतमहावीर्यो वज्रसंहननो युवा उद्यम्य मन्दरं दोर्भ्यां हरेत्सवनकाननम्

He was young and his great prowess was extraordinary. His body was capable of withstanding the vajra. He could have raised up and carried in his arms Mandāra, with all its woods and forests.

वह युवा था और उसका पराक्रम असाधारण था। उनका शरीर वज्र को सहन करने में सक्षम था। वह मंदार को उठा सकता था और उसके सभी जंगलों और वनों सहित अपनी बाहों में ले सकता था।

धनुष्यथ गदायुद्धे त्सरुप्रहरणेषु च नागपृष्ठेऽश्वपृष्ठे च बभूव परिनिष्ठितः

He was skilled in fighting with the bow and arrow, the club and all weapons, on the back of an elephant and on the back of a horse.

वह धनुष-बाण, गदा और सभी हथियारों से, हाथी की पीठ पर और घोड़े की पीठ पर बैठकर लड़ने में कुशल था।

बले विष्णुसमश्चासीत्तेजसा भास्करोपमः अक्षुब्धत्वेऽर्णवसमः सहिष्णुत्वे धरासमः

He was like Viṣṇu in his strength and like the sun in his radiance. He was like the ocean in his equanimity and like the earth in his tolerance.

वह अपनी शक्ति में विष्णु के समान और अपनी कांति में सूर्य के समान था। वह अपनी समता में समुद्र के समान और अपनी सहनशीलता में पृथ्वी के समान थे।

संमतः स महीपालः प्रसन्नपुरराष्ट्रवान् भूयो धर्मपरैर्भावैर्विदितं जनमावसत्

The great king was loved by all his subjects, in cities and in the country. Everyone abided by dharma.

महान राजा को उसकी सभी प्रजा, शहरों और देश में बहुत प्यार करती थी। सभी ने धर्म का पालन किया।
