वैशंपायन उवाच कृतास्त्रान्धार्तराष्ट्रांश्च पाण्डुपुत्रांश्च भारत दृष्ट्वा द्रोणोऽब्रवीद्राजन्धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम्

Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing that the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Pāṇḍu had become masters in the use of arms, Droṇa spoke to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of men,

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह देखकर कि धृतराष्ट्र और पांडु के पुत्र शस्त्र चलाने में निपुण हो गये हैं, द्रोण ने मनुष्यों के स्वामी राजा धृतराष्ट्र से कहा,

कृपस्य सोमदत्तस्य बाह्लीकस्य च धीमतः गाङ्गेयस्य च सांनिध्ये व्यासस्य विदुरस्य च

in the presence of Kṛpa, Somadatta, Bahlika, the wise son of Gāṅga, Vyāsa and Vidūra,

कृप, सोमदत्त, बाह्लीक, गंगा के बुद्धिमान पुत्र, व्यास और विदुर की उपस्थिति में,

राजन्संप्राप्तविद्यास्ते कुमराः कुरुसत्तम ते दर्शयेयुः स्वां शिक्षां राजन्ननुमते तव

"O king! O supreme among the Kuru-s! The princes have now completed their learning. O king! With your permission, let them now display what they have learned."

"हे राजा! हे कुरु-श्रेष्ठ! राजकुमारों ने अब अपनी शिक्षा पूरी कर ली है। हे राजा! आपकी अनुमति से, अब उन्होंने जो सीखा है उसे प्रदर्शित करें।"

ततोऽब्रवीन्महाराजः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना भारद्वाज महत्कर्म कृतं ते द्विजसत्तम

The great king replied with gladness in his heart, "O best of the Brāhmana-s! O Bhāradvāja! You have accomplished a great task.

महान राजा ने अपने हृदय में प्रसन्नता के साथ उत्तर दिया, "हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! हे भारद्वाज! आपने एक महान कार्य पूरा किया है।

यदा तु मन्यसे कालं यस्मिन्देशे यथा यथा तथा तथा विधानाय स्वयमाज्ञापयस्व माम्

You should yourself order me about how to arrange the display, the time and the place and about the rules to be followed.

प्रदर्शन की व्यवस्था कैसे करनी है, समय, स्थान तथा पालन किये जाने वाले नियमों के विषय में आप स्वयं ही मुझे आदेश दें।

स्पृहयाम्यद्य निर्वेदात्पुरुषाणां सचक्षुषाम् अस्त्रहेतोः पराक्रान्तान्ये मे द्रक्ष्यन्ति पुत्रकान्

Today, I grieve for my blindness and envy men who possess eyesight. They will now be able to witness the prowess of my sons with weapons.

आज, मैं अपने अंधेपन पर शोक मनाता हूं और उन लोगों से ईर्ष्या करता हूं जिनके पास आंखों की रोशनी है। वे अब मेरे पुत्रों के अस्त्र-शस्त्र कौशल को देख सकेंगे।

क्षत्तर्यद्गुरुराचार्यो ब्रवीति कुरु तत्तथा न हीदृशं प्रियं मन्ये भविता धर्मवत्सल

O kshatta! O one who is devoted to dharma! Follow the instructions of this teacher and preceptor. I can't think of anything that will be more agreeable to me."

हे क्षत्त! हे धर्म के प्रति समर्पित! इस शिक्षक और उपदेशक के निर्देशों का पालन करें. मैं ऐसी किसी चीज़ के बारे में नहीं सोच सकता जो मेरे लिए अधिक अनुकूल हो।"

ततो राजानमामन्त्र्य विदुरानुगतो बहिः भारद्वाजो महाप्राज्ञो मापयामास मेदिनीम् समामवृक्षां निर्गुल्मामुदक्प्रवणसंस्थिताम्

Thereupon, Vidūra excused himself from the king's presence and went out. The immensely wise son of Bhāradvāja measured out a flat stretch of land that was devoid of trees and bushes, but had wells and springs.

इसके बाद, विदुर ने खुद को राजा की उपस्थिति से माफ़ कर दिया और बाहर चला गया। भारद्वाज के अत्यंत बुद्धिमान पुत्र ने भूमि का एक समतल भाग नापा जो पेड़ों और झाड़ियों से रहित था, लेकिन उसमें कुएं और झरने थे।

तस्यां भूमौ बलिं चक्रे तिथौ नक्षत्रपूजिते अवघुष्टं पुरे चापि तदर्थं वदतां वर

O king! On that plot of ground, on a day when the nakṣatra-s were auspicious, that supreme of eloquent warriors made offerings and the reasons for that were announced in the city.

हे राजा! उस भूमि पर, जिस दिन नक्षत्र शुभ थे, उस दिन परम तेजस्वी योद्धाओं ने प्रसाद अर्पित किया और उसके कारणों की नगर में घोषणा की गई।

रङ्गभूमौ सुविपुलं शास्त्रदृष्टं यथाविधि प्रेक्षागारं सुविहितं चक्रुस्तत्र च शिल्पिनः राज्ञः सर्वायुधोपेतं स्त्रीणां चैव नरर्षभ

A large arena was constructed in accordance with the principles of the śāstra-s, and equipped with diverse weapons. O bull among men! Artisans constructed a giant viewing stand for the king and another for the women.

शास्त्र के सिद्धांतों के अनुसार एक बड़ा मैदान बनाया गया था, और विभिन्न हथियारों से सुसज्जित किया गया था। हे मनुष्यों में बैल! कारीगरों ने राजा के लिए और महिलाओं के लिए एक विशाल देखने का स्टैंड बनाया।

मञ्चांश्च कारयामासुस्तत्र जानपदा जनाः विपुलानुच्छ्रयोपेताञ्शिबिकाश्च महाधनाः

The citizens built many platforms. The wealthy ones constructed large and high palanquins.

नागरिकों ने अनेक मंच बनवाये। धनी लोग बड़ी और ऊँची पालकियाँ बनवाते थे।

तस्मिंस्ततोऽहनि प्राप्ते राजा ससचिवस्तदा भीष्मं प्रमुखतः कृत्वा कृपं चाचार्यसत्तमम्

When the day arrived, the king, accompanied by his advisers, came with Bhīṣma and the foremost of preceptors, Kṛpa, leading the way.

जब दिन आया, राजा, अपने सलाहकारों के साथ, भीष्म और गुरुओं में अग्रणी कृपा को लेकर आये, और उनका नेतृत्व कर रहे थे।

मुक्ताजालपरिक्षिप्तं वैडूर्यमणिभूषितम् शातकुम्भमयं दिव्यं प्रेक्षागारमुपागमत्

They arrived at the divine royal viewing stand, constructed out of gold leaf, decorated with lattices of pearl-work and adorned with lapis lazuli.

वे दिव्य शाही दर्शन स्थल पर पहुंचे, जो सोने की पत्ती से बना था, मोती के काम की जाली से सजाया गया था और लापीस लाजुली से सजाया गया था।

गान्धारी च महाभागा कुन्ती च जयतां वर स्त्रियश्च सर्वा या राज्ञः सप्रेष्याः सपरिच्छदाः हर्षादारुरुहुर्मञ्चान्मेरुं देवस्त्रियो यथा

O king who conquers all! Gāndhārī, the immensely for tunate Kuntī and other ladies of the royal household arrived, dressed in beautiful garments and with their attendants. They joyfully ascended the viewing stand, like goddesses ascending Mount Meru.

हे सब पर विजय पाने वाले राजा! गांधारी, अत्यधिक संगीतज्ञ कुंती और राजघराने की अन्य महिलाएँ, सुंदर वस्त्र पहनकर और अपने परिचारिकाओं के साथ आईं। वे खुशी-खुशी दर्शन-स्थल पर चढ़ गईं, जैसे देवियाँ मेरु पर्वत पर चढ़ती हैं।

ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियाद्यं च चातुर्वर्ण्यं पुराद्द्रुतम् दर्शनेप्सु समभ्यागात्कुमाराणां कृतास्त्रताम्

Brāhmana-s, Kṣatriya-s and others of the four vārṇa-s hurriedly left the city and arrived there, wishing to witness the skills of the princes in the use of arms.

ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय और चार वर्णों के अन्य लोग जल्दी से शहर छोड़कर राजकुमारों के हथियारों के इस्तेमाल के कौशल को देखने की इच्छा से वहां पहुंचे।

प्रवादितैश्च वादित्रैर्जनकौतूहलेन च महार्णव इव क्षुब्धः समाजः सोऽभवत्तदा

With the sound of the music that was being played and the curiosity of the assembly, the crowd was like a giant ocean rippling with waves.

बज रहे संगीत की ध्वनि और सभा की उत्सुकता के कारण, भीड़ लहरों से हिलते हुए एक विशाल महासागर की तरह थी।

ततः शुक्लाम्बरधरः शुक्लयज्ञोपवीतवान् शुक्लकेशः सितश्मश्रुः शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनः

Then the preceptor entered the arena with his son. He was dressed in white garments and wore a white sacred thread. His hair and beard were white. He wore a white garland and was anointed with white paste.

तभी उपदेशक अपने पुत्र के साथ मैदान में उतरे। उन्होंने सफेद वस्त्र पहने हुए थे और सफेद जनेऊ पहना हुआ था। उनके बाल और दाढ़ी सफ़ेद थे. उन्होंने सफेद माला पहनी और सफेद लेप से उनका अभिषेक किया गया।

रङ्गमध्यं तदाचार्यः सपुत्रः प्रविवेश ह नभो जलधरैर्हीनं साङ्गारक इवांशुमान्

It was as if the moon and Mars had entered a sky that was bereft of rain clouds.

यह ऐसा था मानो चंद्रमा और मंगल ग्रह बारिश के बादलों से रहित आकाश में प्रवेश कर गए हों।

स यथासमयं चक्रे बलिं बलवतां वरः ब्राह्मणांश्चात्र मन्त्रज्ञान्वाचयामास मङ्गलम्

At the appropriate time, that supreme of warriors rendered offerings and instructed Brāhmana-s who knew the rites to recite mantra-s.

उचित समय पर, योद्धाओं में सर्वश्रेष्ठ ने प्रसाद प्रदान किया और अनुष्ठान जानने वाले ब्राह्मणों को मंत्र पढ़ने का निर्देश दिया।

अथ पुण्याहघोषस्य पुण्यस्य तदनन्तरम् विविशुर्विविधं गृह्य शस्त्रोपकरणं नराः

Once the auspicious and pleasant musical instruments were quiet, men entered the arena, carrying diverse weapons and equipment.

एक बार जब शुभ और सुखद संगीत वाद्ययंत्र शांत हो गए, तो लोग विभिन्न हथियारों और उपकरणों को लेकर मैदान में प्रवेश कर गए।

ततो बद्धतनुत्राणा बद्धकक्ष्या महाबलाः बद्धतूणाः सधनुषो विविशुर्भरतर्षभाः

Then the mighty bulls of the Bhārata lineage tightened their lower garments and entered, equipped with bows, quivers and finger protectors.

तब भरत वंश के शक्तिशाली बैलों ने अपने निचले वस्त्र कस लिए और धनुष, तरकश और अंगुलियों से सुसज्जित होकर प्रवेश किया।

अनुज्येष्ठं च ते तत्र युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः चक्रुरस्त्रं महावीर्याः कुमाराः परमाद्भुतम्

With Yudhiṣṭhira leading the way, those princes, in order of their age, began to display great valour and wonderful skills in the use of weapons.

युधिष्ठिर के आगे बढ़ने पर वे राजकुमार अपनी आयु के अनुसार महान वीरता और शस्त्र चलाने में अद्भुत कौशल दिखाने लगे।

केचिच्छराक्षेपभयाच्छिरांस्यवननामिरे मनुजा धृष्टमपरे वीक्षां चक्रुः सविस्मयाः

Some lowered their heads, concerned that arrows might fall on them. Other men who were not concerned looked on, in wonder and amazement.

कुछ लोगों ने अपने सिर नीचे कर लिये, उन्हें चिंता थी कि कहीं तीर उन पर न गिर जायें। अन्य पुरुष जो चिंतित नहीं थे, आश्चर्य और आश्चर्य से देखते रहे।

ते स्म लक्ष्याणि विविधुर्बाणैर्नामाङ्कशोभितैः विविधैर्लाघवोत्सृष्टैरुह्यन्तो वाजिभिर्द्रुतम्

They pierced targets with arrows that had their names engraved on them. They rode fleet-footed horses skilfully.

उन्होंने उन लक्ष्यों को तीरों से छेदा जिन पर उनके नाम खुदे हुए थे। वे बड़ी कुशलता से बेड़ा-पैर वाले घोड़ों की सवारी करते थे।

तत्कुमारबलं तत्र गृहीतशरकार्मुकम् गन्धर्वनगराकारं प्रेक्ष्य ते विस्मिताभवन्

On witnessing the strength of the princes in the use of bows and arrows, they were amazed and thought they were in a city of the gāndharva-s.

धनुष और बाण के उपयोग में राजकुमारों की ताकत देखकर, वे आश्चर्यचकित हो गए और सोचा कि वे गंधर्वों के शहर में थे।

सहसा चुक्रुशुस्तत्र नराः शतसहस्रशः विस्मयोत्फुल्लनयनाः साधु साध्विति भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Hundreds and thousands of men, their eyes dilated with wonder, cheered them on.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सैकड़ों और हजारों पुरुषों ने, उनकी आँखें आश्चर्य से फैल गईं, उनका उत्साहवर्धन किया।

कृत्वा धनुषि ते मार्गान्रथचर्यासु चासकृत् गजपृष्ठेऽश्वपृष्ठे च नियुद्धे च महाबलाः

After repeatedly demonstrating their skill in the use of bows and arrows, chariots, fighting on elephants, fighting on horses and duels,

धनुष-बाण चलाने, रथ चलाने, हाथियों पर युद्ध करने, घोड़ों पर युद्ध करने और द्वंद्वयुद्ध में अपनी कुशलता का बार-बार प्रदर्शन करने के बाद,

गृहीतखड्गचर्माणस्ततो भूयः प्रहारिणः त्सरुमार्गान्यथोद्दिष्टांश्चेरुः सर्वासु भूमिषु

those strong ones then picked up swords and shields and began to circle one another on the ground, exhibiting the various modes of attacking with a sword.

Then, in great spirits, Suyodhana and Vṛkodara entered, with clubs in their hands, like two single-peaked mountains.

Those mightyarmed warriors tightened their lower garments and roared, like two mad elephants trumpeting and contending.

Those immensely strong ones circled each other with unblemished clubs, like mad elephants.

विदुरो धृतराष्ट्राय गान्धार्यै पाण्डवारणिः न्यवेदयेतां तत्सर्वं कुमाराणां विचेष्टितम्

Vidūra described the feats of the princes to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the mother of the Pāṇḍava-s described them to Gāndhārī.
