नारद उवाच जित्वा तु पृथिवीं दैत्यौ निःसपत्नौ गतव्यथौ कृत्वा त्रैलोक्यमव्यग्रं कृतकृत्यौ बभूवतुः

Nārada said: "After conquering the earth, the two daitya-s had no other enemies or concerns. Having subjugated the three worlds, their desire had been attained.

नारद ने कहा: "पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त करने के बाद, दोनों दैत्यों के पास कोई अन्य शत्रु या चिंता नहीं थी। तीनों लोकों को अपने अधीन करने के बाद, उनकी इच्छा पूरी हो गई थी।

देवगन्धर्वयक्षाणां नागपार्थिवरक्षसाम् आदाय सर्वरत्नानि परां तुष्टिमुपागतौ

They were delighted at having robbed the gods, the gāndharva-s, yakṣa-s, nāga-s, kings and rakṣas of all their gems

वे देवताओं, गंधर्वों, यक्षों, नागों, राजाओं और राक्षसों से उनके सारे रत्न लूटकर प्रसन्न थे।

यदा न प्रतिषेद्धारस्तयोः सन्तीह केचन निरुद्योगौ तदा भूत्वा विजह्रातेऽमराविव

and when they saw that they had not a single rival left, they were supremely content and sported like the gods

और जब उन्होंने देखा कि उनका एक भी प्रतिद्वंद्वी नहीं बचा है, तो वे अत्यंत संतुष्ट हुए और देवताओं के समान प्रसन्न हुए

स्त्रीभिर्माल्यैश्च गन्धैश्च भक्षैर्भोज्यैश्च पुष्कलैः पानैश्च विविधैर्हृद्यैः परां प्रीतिमवापतुः

Like the immortals, they gave up all endeavours and spent their time in pleasures, with women, garlands, fragrances, food, and delicacies in copious quantities, drink and various other objects that give rise to enjoyment.

अमर लोगों की तरह, उन्होंने सभी प्रयासों को छोड़ दिया और अपना समय महिलाओं, मालाओं, सुगंधों, भोजन और प्रचुर मात्रा में व्यंजनों, पेय और विभिन्न अन्य वस्तुओं के साथ भोग में बिताया जो आनंद को जन्म देते हैं।

अन्तःपुरे वनोद्याने पर्वतोपवनेषु च यथेप्सितेषु देशेषु विजह्रातेऽमराविव

Like the immortals, they sported in their inner quarters, gardens, mountains and groves and in whatever region that struck their fancy.

अमरों की तरह, वे अपने आंतरिक क्वार्टरों, बगीचों, पहाड़ों और उपवनों में और जिस भी क्षेत्र में उन्हें पसंद आता था, वहां खेल खेलते थे।

ततः कदाचिद्विन्ध्यस्य पृष्ठे समशिलातले पुष्पिताग्रेषु शालेषु विहारमभिजग्मतुः

One day, they went to sport in a rocky plain on the Vindhya Mountains that was dense with śala trees crested with blossoming flowers.

एक दिन, वे विंध्य पर्वत पर एक चट्टानी मैदान में खेलने गए, जो खिले हुए फूलों से लदे शाल वृक्षों से घिरा हुआ था।

दिव्येषु सर्वकामेषु समानीतेषु तत्र तौ वरासनेषु संहृष्टौ सह स्त्रीभिर्निषेदतुः

After every divine object of desire had been brought, the two contentedly sat on supreme seats, with beautiful women around them.

इच्छा की प्रत्येक दिव्य वस्तु लाने के बाद, दोनों संतुष्ट होकर सर्वोच्च आसन पर बैठे, उनके चारों ओर सुंदर स्त्रियाँ थीं।

ततो वादित्रनृत्ताभ्यामुपातिष्ठन्त तौ स्त्रियः गीतैश्च स्तुतिसंयुक्तैः प्रीत्यर्थमुपजग्मिरे

Wishing to please the two, the women danced to the sound of music and delighted them with songs sung in their praise.

दोनों को खुश करने की इच्छा से, महिलाओं ने संगीत की ध्वनि पर नृत्य किया और उनकी प्रशंसा में गाए गए गीतों से उन्हें प्रसन्न किया।

ततस्तिलोत्तमा तत्र वने पुष्पाणि चिन्वती वेषमाक्षिप्तमाधाय रक्तेनैकेन वाससा

It was then that Tilottamā appeared, plucking flowers in the forest. She was dressed in a single red garment, an attire that was very seductive.

तभी तिलोत्तमा जंगल में फूल तोड़ती हुई प्रकट हुईं। उसने एक ही लाल परिधान पहना हुआ था, एक पोशाक जो बहुत आकर्षक थी।

नदीतीरेषु जातान्सा कर्णिकारान्विचिन्वती शनैर्जगाम तं देशं यत्रास्तां तौ महासुरौ

Gathering karṇikāra flowers along the banks of the river, she slowly approached the place where the two great āsura-s were.

नदी के किनारे कर्णिकारा फूल इकट्ठा करके, वह धीरे-धीरे उस स्थान पर पहुँची जहाँ दो महान असुर थे।

तौ तु पीत्वा वरं पानं मदरक्तान्तलोचनौ दृष्ट्वैव तां वरारोहां व्यथितौ संबभूवतुः

They had drunk the best of wine and their eyes were red. On seeing the one with the beautiful hips, they were struck by desire.

उन्होंने उत्तम मदिरा पी रखी थी और उनकी आँखें लाल थीं। खूबसूरत कूल्हों को देखकर उनके मन में वासना जाग उठी।

तावुत्पत्यासनं हित्वा जग्मतुर्यत्र सा स्थिता उभौ च कामसंमत्तावुभौ प्रार्थयतश्च ताम्

They instantly left their seats and went to where she was. Filled with desire, they both asked for her favours.

वे तुरंत अपनी सीटें छोड़कर वहां चले गए जहां वह थी। इच्छा से भरकर, उन दोनों ने उससे अनुग्रह मांगा।

दक्षिणे तां करे सुभ्रूं सुन्दो जग्राह पाणिना उपसुन्दोऽपि जग्राह वामे पाणौ तिलोत्तमाम्

Sunda grasped the right hand of the one with the beautiful brows. Upasunda grasped Tilottamā's left hand.

सुंदा ने सुंदर भौंहों वाले का दाहिना हाथ पकड़ लिया। उपसुन्द ने तिलोत्तमा का बायाँ हाथ पकड़ लिया।

वरप्रदानमत्तौ तावौरसेन बलेन च धनरत्नमदाभ्यां च सुरापानमदेन च

They were intoxicated with the boon they had received, with their physical strength, with the riches and gems they possessed and with the wine they had drunk.

वे अपने प्राप्त वरदान से, अपनी शारीरिक शक्ति से, अपने पास मौजूद धन और रत्नों से और अपने द्वारा पीयी गयी शराब से नशे में थे।

सर्वैरेतैर्मदैर्मत्तावन्योन्यं भ्रुकुटीकृतौ मदकामसमाविष्टौ परस्परमथोचतुः

Intoxicated with this madness and with the madness of desire, they contracted their brows and spoke to each other.

इस पागलपन और चाहत के पागलपन के नशे में, उन्होंने अपनी भौंहें सिकोड़ लीं और एक-दूसरे से बात करने लगे।

मम भार्या तव गुरुरिति सुन्दोऽभ्यभाषत मम भार्या तव वधूरुपसुन्दोऽभ्यभाषत

"She is my wife and your superior," said Sunda. "She is my wife and your sister-in-law," replied Upasunda.

सुंडा ने कहा, "वह मेरी पत्नी और आपकी वरिष्ठ हैं।" उपसुंद ने उत्तर दिया, "वह मेरी पत्नी और तुम्हारी भाभी है।"

नैषा तव ममैषेति तत्र तौ मन्युराविशत् तस्या हेतोर्गदे भीमे तावुभावप्यगृह्णताम्

In their anger, they shouted at each other, "She is mine, not yours." Overcome by desire for her, they grasped their terrible clubs.

गुस्से में वे एक-दूसरे पर चिल्लाने लगे, "वह मेरी है, तुम्हारी नहीं।" उसकी इच्छा से वशीभूत होकर, उन्होंने अपनी भयानक गदाएँ पकड़ लीं।

तौ प्रगृह्य गदे भीमे तस्याः कामेन मोहितौ अहं पूर्वमहं पूर्वमित्यन्योन्यं निजघ्नतुः

Uttering the words, "I was the first," they attacked each other.

"मैं पहला था" शब्द बोलते हुए उन्होंने एक-दूसरे पर हमला किया।

तौ गदाभिहतौ भीमौ पेततुर्धरणीतले रुधिरेणावलिप्ताङ्गौ द्वाविवार्कौ नभश्च्युतौ

Struck by those terrible clubs, both of them fell down on the ground. With blood streaming from their bodies, they looked like two suns dislodged from the sky.

उन भयानक गदाओं के प्रहार से वे दोनों भूमि पर गिर पड़े। उनके शरीर से रक्त की धारा बहते हुए वे आकाश से टूटे हुए दो सूर्यों के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे।

ततस्ता विद्रुता नार्यः स च दैत्यगणस्तदा पातालमगमत्सर्वो विषादभयकम्पितः

Then the women and the masses of daitya-s fled. Miserable and shuddering with fright, all of them took refuge in the nether regions.

तब स्त्रियाँ और दैत्य-समूह भाग गये। दुखी होकर और डर से कांपते हुए, उन सभी ने पाताल लोक में शरण ली।

ततः पितामहस्तत्र सह देवैर्महर्षिभिः आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा पूजयिष्यंस्तिलोत्तमाम्

Then the pure-souled grandfather arrived, with the gods and the maharṣi-s and praised Tilottamā.

तब शुद्धात्मा दादाजी देवताओं और महर्षियों के साथ आये और तिलोत्तमा की स्तुति की।

वरेण छन्दिता सा तु ब्रह्मणा प्रीतिमेव ह वरयामास तत्रैनां प्रीतः प्राह पितामहः

Brahmā was pleased to grant her a boon. Delighted with her, the grandfather said,

ब्रह्मा ने प्रसन्न होकर उसे वरदान दिया। उससे प्रसन्न होकर दादाजी ने कहा,

आदित्यचरिताँल्लोकान्विचरिष्यसि भामिनि तेजसा च सुदृष्टां त्वां न करिष्यति कश्चन

"O, fortunate one! You will roam in the world of the āditya-s. Your energy will be so great that no one will be able to look at you for a long time.

"हे भाग्यवान! आप आदित्यों की दुनिया में विचरण करेंगे। आपकी ऊर्जा इतनी महान होगी कि कोई भी आपको लंबे समय तक देख नहीं पाएगा।

एवं तस्यै वरं दत्त्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः इन्द्रे त्रैलोक्यमाधाय ब्रह्मलोकं गतः प्रभुः

Having granted this boon to her, the grandfather of all the worlds, instated Indra in the three worlds. The illustrious one then departed for Brahmā's world.

उसे यह वरदान देकर, सभी लोकों के पितामह ने, तीनों लोकों में इंद्र को स्थापित किया। फिर वह महामहिम ब्रह्मा के लोक के लिए प्रस्थान कर गया।

एवं तौ सहितौ भूत्वा सर्वार्थेष्वेकनिश्चयौ तिलोत्तमार्थे संक्रुद्धावन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः

Those two were always together, they were always united with the same objective. But in their anger, they killed each other over Tilottamā.

वे दोनों सदैव एक साथ रहते थे, एक ही उद्देश्य से सदैव एक रहते थे। लेकिन अपने क्रोध में, उन्होंने तिलोत्तमा के कारण एक दूसरे को मार डाला।

तस्माद्ब्रवीमि वः स्नेहात्सर्वान्भरतसत्तमान् यथा वो नात्र भेदः स्यात्सर्वेषां द्रौपदीकृते तथा कुरुत भद्रं वो मम चेत्प्रियमिच्छथ

O, supreme among the Bhārata lineage! Out of my affection for you, I am telling you, so that there is no dissension among you because of Draupadī. O, fortunate ones! If you wish to please me, act accordingly."

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! मैं तुम्हारे प्रति स्नेहवश तुम्हें बता रहा हूं, ताकि द्रौपदी के कारण तुम्हारे बीच कोई मतभेद न हो। हे भाग्यवानों! यदि तुम मुझे प्रसन्न करना चाहते हो तो तदनुसार कार्य करो।"

वैशंपायन उवाच एवमुक्ता महात्मानो नारदेन महर्षिणा समयं चक्रिरे राजंस्तेऽन्योन्येन समागताः समक्षं तस्य देवर्षेर्नारदस्यामितौजसः

Vaiśampāyana said: O, king! Having been thus addressed by the great-souled maharṣi Nārada, they consulted with each other and arrived at a rule, in the infinitely energetic devarṣi Nārada's presence.

वैशम्पायन ने कहाः हे राजन! महान आत्मा वाले महर्षि नारद द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, उन्होंने एक-दूसरे से परामर्श किया और असीम ऊर्जावान देवर्षि नारद की उपस्थिति में एक नियम पर पहुंचे।

द्रौपद्या नः सहासीनमन्योऽन्यं योऽभिदर्शयेत् स नो द्वादश वर्षाणि ब्रह्मचारी वने वसेत्

If any one of them set eyes on Draupadī when she was lying with any one of the others, he would retire to the forest and live the life of a brahmachari for twelve years.

यदि उनमें से किसी की नजर द्रौपदी पर पड़ती, जब वह किसी अन्य के साथ लेटी हुई होती, तो वह जंगल में चला जाता और बारह वर्षों तक ब्रह्मचारी का जीवन व्यतीत करता।

कृते तु समये तस्मिन्पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारिभिः नारदोऽप्यगमत्प्रीत इष्टं देशं महामुनिः

After the Pāṇḍava-s, who always followed dharma, had established this rule, the great sage Nārada was happy and went where he wished to go.

हमेशा धर्म का पालन करने वाले पांडवों द्वारा इस नियम को स्थापित करने के बाद, महान ऋषि नारद खुश हुए और जहां जाना चाहते थे वहां चले गए।

एवं तैः समयः पूर्वं कृतो नारदचोदितैः न चाभिद्यन्त ते सार्वे तदान्योन्येन भारत

O, descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In earlier times, thus requested by Nārada, they established a rule and no dissension arose between them.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पहले के समय में, नारद के इस प्रकार अनुरोध करने पर, उन्होंने एक नियम स्थापित किया और उनके बीच कोई मतभेद उत्पन्न नहीं हुआ।
