वैशंपायन उवाच
गुरवे प्राङ्नमस्कृत्य मनोबुद्धिसमाधिभिः
संपूज्य च द्विजान्सर्वांस्तथान्यान्विदुषो जनान्
Vaiśampāyana said: "Bowing down first before my preceptor, with my mind and intellect concentrated and worshipping with devotion, reverence and single-mindedness all the Brāhmana-s and learned men,
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: "सबसे पहले अपने गुरु के सामने झुककर, मन और बुद्धि को एकाग्र करके और भक्ति, श्रद्धा और एकचित्त होकर सभी ब्राह्मणों और विद्वानों की पूजा करो।"
I shall now recite in its entirety the account I heard from the great-souled Vyāsa, a wise maharṣi famous in the three worlds, infinite in his accomplishments.
अब मैं अपनी सिद्धियों में अनंत, तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध एक बुद्धिमान महर्षि, महान आत्मा व्यास से सुनी गई कहानी को पूरी तरह से सुनाऊंगा।
O king! You are a worthy person to hear the history of Bhārata. Having received the account from my preceptor, I am delighted to be able to recite it.
हे राजा! आप भारत का इतिहास सुनने के योग्य व्यक्ति हैं। अपने गुरु से वृत्तांत प्राप्त करने के बाद, मैं इसे सुनाने में सक्षम होने से प्रसन्न हूं।

O king! Hear how the quarrel between the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s occurred. In a desire for the kingdom, hear about the exile as a result of the game of dice.
हे राजा! सुनिए कि कुरु और पांडवों के बीच झगड़ा कैसे हुआ। राज्य की चाह में पासे के खेल के फलस्वरूप वनवास की बात सुनो।

तत्तेऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि पृच्छते भरतर्षभ
O bull of the Bhārata lineage! At your bidding, I shall recount to you how a battle ensued that destroyed the earth.
हे भरत वंश के बैल! आपके आदेश पर, मैं आपको बताऊंगा कि कैसे एक युद्ध हुआ जिसने पृथ्वी को नष्ट कर दिया।
On their father's death, these warriors returned to their home from the forest. In a short while, they became skilled in the art of archery and knowledge of the Veda-s.
अपने पिता की मृत्यु पर ये योद्धा जंगल से अपने घर लौट आये। कुछ ही समय में वे धनुर्विद्या और वेद-ज्ञान में निपुण हो गये।
However, the Kuru-s became envious of the Pāṇḍava-s, who were all gifted with immense physical strength, beauty and energy, fame and fortune. They were also loved by the citizens.
हालाँकि, कुरु-पांडवों से ईर्ष्या करने लगे, जो सभी अपार शारीरिक शक्ति, सौंदर्य और ऊर्जा, प्रसिद्धि और भाग्य से संपन्न थे। वे नागरिकों के भी प्रिय थे।
Then they heard of Kṛṣṇā (the princess of Pāñcāla) having become disposed to select a husband from among the assembled princes.
तब उन्होंने सुना कि कृष्णा (पंचाल की राजकुमारी) एकत्रित राजकुमारों में से एक पति का चयन करने के लिए तैयार हो गई हैं।

विदिता हास्तिनपुरं प्रत्याजग्मुररिंदमाः
Having won Draupadī, they lived there for one year. And having been recognized, those destroyers of foes returned to Hāstinapura.
द्रौपदी को जीतकर वे एक वर्ष तक वहीं रहे। और पहचाने जाने पर शत्रुओं का संहार करने वाले वे हस्तिनापुर लौट आये।

त उक्ता धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा शांतनवेन च
भ्रातृभिर्विग्रहस्तात कथं वो न भवेदिति
अस्माभिः खाण्डवप्रस्थे युष्मद्वासोऽनुचिन्तितः
King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the son of Śāntanu then told them, "Sons, so that conflict doesn't ensue between you and your brothers, we have thought and decided that Khāṇḍavaprastha will be your abode.
तब राजा धृतराष्ट्र और शांतनु के पुत्र ने उनसे कहा, "पुत्रों, ताकि तुम्हारे और तुम्हारे भाइयों के बीच संघर्ष न हो, हमने सोचा और निर्णय लिया है कि खांडवप्रस्थ ही तुम्हारा निवास स्थान होगा।
On hearing these words, they and their friends went to Khāṇḍavaprastha, taking many jewels with them.
यह वचन सुनकर वे और उनके मित्र अनेक रत्न अपने साथ लेकर खाण्डवप्रस्थ चले गये।

तत्र ते न्यवसन्राजन्संवत्सरगणान्बहून्
वशे शस्त्रप्रतापेन कुर्वन्तोऽन्यान्महीक्षितः
And the sons of Pṛthā lived there for many years. Through the force of their weapons, they brought many kings under their vassalage.
और पृथा के पुत्र कई वर्षों तक वहाँ रहे। अपने हथियारों के बल पर उन्होंने कई राजाओं को अपने अधीन कर लिया।

एवं धर्मप्रधानास्ते सत्यव्रतपरायणाः
अप्रमत्तोत्थिताः क्षान्ताः प्रतपन्तोऽहितांस्तदा
Thus they gradually increased in power, setting store to virtue and the way of truth, not roused by anger, calm and subjugating those who wished to do them harm.
इस प्रकार धीरे-धीरे उनकी शक्ति बढ़ती गई, उन्होंने सदाचार और सत्य का मार्ग अपनाया, क्रोध से उत्तेजित नहीं हुए, शांत हुए और उन लोगों को अपने वश में किया जो उन्हें नुकसान पहुंचाना चाहते थे।
O supreme among kings! Kuntī's son and Vāsudeva then satisfied Agni by giving him Khāṇḍava to burn.
हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! तब कुंती के पुत्र और वासुदेव ने अग्नि को खाण्डव देकर संतुष्ट किया।

नातिभारो हि पार्थस्य केशवेनाभवत्सह
व्यवसायसहायस्य विष्णोः शत्रुवधेष्विव
Aided by Keśava, this task wasn't difficult for Bībhatsu Pārtha, just as when Viṣṇu sets his mind to destroying enemies, no task is too difficult.
केशव की सहायता से, बीभत्सु पार्थ के लिए यह कार्य कठिन नहीं था, जैसे जब विष्णु शत्रुओं को नष्ट करने का मन बनाते हैं, तो कोई भी कार्य कठिन नहीं होता है।

अग्नि ने पार्थ को सर्वश्रेष्ठ धनुष गांडीव, बाणों का एक अक्षय तरकश और ध्वज पर एक बंदर के साथ एक रथ दिया।

स चकार सभां दिव्यां सर्वरत्नसमाचिताम्
It was on that occasion that Bībhatsu freed the great demon Māyā. He built the divine assembly hall, adorned with all kinds of jewels and precious stones.
इसी अवसर पर बिभात्सु ने महान राक्षस माया को मुक्त कराया था। उन्होंने सभी प्रकार के रत्नों और बहुमूल्य पत्थरों से सुसज्जित दिव्य सभा भवन का निर्माण कराया।

Seeing this, the evil-minded and deluded Duryodhana was driven by avarice. Thereupon he deceived Yudhiṣṭhira in a game of dice, played by Saubala,
यह देखकर दुष्ट-बुद्धि और मोहग्रस्त दुर्योधन लोभ से प्रेरित हो गया। इसके बाद उसने सौबाला द्वारा खेले गए पासे के खेल में युधिष्ठिर को धोखा दिया।

वनं प्रस्थापयामास सप्त वर्षाणि पञ्च च
अज्ञातमेकं राष्ट्रे च तथा वर्षं त्रयोदशम्
and banished him to the forest for twelve years, with an additional year to be spent in disguise, adding up to thirteen years.
और उसे बारह वर्षों के लिए जंगल में निर्वासित कर दिया, और एक अतिरिक्त वर्ष भेष बदलकर व्यतीत करना पड़ा, जो बढ़कर तेरह वर्ष हो गया।

ततश्चतुर्दशे वर्षे याचमानाः स्वकं वसु
नालभन्त महाराज ततो युद्धमवर्तत
O king! When in the four teenth year they returned and claimed their property, they didn't get it.
हे राजा! जब चौथे वर्ष में वे लौटे और अपनी संपत्ति का दावा किया, तो उन्हें वह नहीं मिली।
Then war was declared and after destroying all the Kṣatriya lineages and killing King Duryodhana, the Pāṇḍava-s obtained their kingdom back, mostly unpopulated.
फिर युद्ध की घोषणा की गई और सभी क्षत्रिय वंशों को नष्ट करने और राजा दुर्योधन को मारने के बाद, पांडवों ने अपना राज्य वापस प्राप्त कर लिया, जिसमें ज्यादातर आबादी नहीं थी।

हे महान राजा! यह उन लोगों का प्राचीन इतिहास है जिनके कर्म अनन्त थे, संघर्ष, राज्य का विनाश और विजय का वृत्तान्त।”
