वैशंपायन उवाच ततः प्रज्वलिते शुक्रे शार्ङ्गकास्ते सुदुःखिताः व्यथिताः परमोद्विग्ना नाधिजग्मुः परायणम्

Vaiśampāyana said: When the fire blazed up, the Śārṅgaka-s were extremely distressed, miserable and extremely anxious, because they could not find any means of escaping.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब आग भड़क उठी, तो शारंगक बेहद व्यथित, दुखी और बेहद चिंतित थे, क्योंकि उन्हें भागने का कोई रास्ता नहीं मिल रहा था।

निशाम्य पुत्रकान्बालान्माता तेषां तपस्विनी जरिता दुःखसंतप्ता विललाप नरेश्वर

O lord of men! Listening to her young sons, their ascetic mother Jaritā was stricken with grief and began to lament. She said

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! अपने छोटे पुत्रों की बात सुनकर उनकी तपस्वी माँ जरीता दुःख से पीड़ित हो गयी और विलाप करने लगी। उसने कहा

अयमग्निर्दहन्कक्षमित आयाति भीषणः जगत्संदीपयन्भीमो मम दुःखविवर्धनः

"This terrible fire is burning the inside of the forest and advancing towards us. It has blazed up the entire universe and is increasing my misery.

"यह भयानक आग जंगल के अंदरूनी हिस्से को जला रही है और हमारी ओर बढ़ रही है। इसने पूरे ब्रह्मांड को जला दिया है और मेरा दुख बढ़ा रही है।

इमे च मां कर्षयन्ति शिशवो मन्दचेतसः अबर्हाश्चरणैर्हीनाः पूर्वेषां नः परायणम् त्रासयंश्चायमायाति लेलिहानो महीरुहान्

My children still have imperfect understanding; they are without feathers and feet. Yet they are the ultimate refuge of our ancestors and are tugging at me. The blazing fire is advancing, licking the tall trees with its tongue and creating terror.

मेरे बच्चों में अभी भी अपूर्ण समझ है; वे पंख और पैरों के बिना हैं। फिर भी वे हमारे पूर्वजों के परम आश्रय हैं और मुझे खींच रहे हैं। धधकती आग ऊँचे-ऊँचे पेड़ों को अपनी जीभ से चाटती हुई और आतंक मचाती हुई आगे बढ़ रही है।

अशक्तिमत्त्वाच्च सुता न शक्ताः सरणे मम आदाय च न शक्तास्मि पुत्रान्सरितुमन्यतः

Because of my unableness, my daughters could not be able to take me in my own, and I could not take my sons elsewhere.

मेरी असमर्थता के कारण मेरी बेटियाँ मुझे अपने पास नहीं ले जा सकीं और मैं अपने बेटों को कहीं और नहीं ले जा सका।

न च त्यक्तुमहं शक्ता हृदयं दूयतीव मे कं नु जह्यामहं पुत्रं कमादाय व्रजाम्यहम्

My sons still do not have strength and are unable to escape. Nor can I escape somewhere else, taking my sons with me. I cannot abandon them and my heart is distressed.

मेरे बेटों में अभी भी ताकत नहीं है और वे भागने में असमर्थ हैं। न ही मैं अपने बेटों को साथ लेकर कहीं और भाग सकती हूं. मैं उन्हें त्याग नहीं सकता और मेरा हृदय व्यथित है।

किं नु मे स्यात्कृतं कृत्वा मन्यध्वं पुत्रकाः कथम् चिन्तयाना विमोक्षं वो नाधिगच्छामि किंचन छादयित्वा च वो गात्रैः करिष्ये मरणं सह

Which one of my sons will I leave and which will I take with me? What should I do? O my sons! What do you think? Even after thinking a lot, I can find no means of escape for you. I will now cover you with my body and die with you.

मैं अपने बेटों में से किसको छोड़ दूँगा और किसे अपने साथ ले जाऊँगा? मुझे क्या करना चाहिए? हे मेरे पुत्रों! आप क्या सोचते हैं? बहुत सोचने पर भी मुझे तुम्हारे बचने का कोई उपाय नहीं सूझ रहा। अब मैं तुम्हें अपने शरीर से ढँक दूँगा और तुम्हारे साथ मर जाऊँगा।

जरितारौ कुलं हीदं ज्येष्ठत्वेन प्रतिष्ठितम् सारिसृक्वः प्रजायेत पितॄणां कुलवर्धनः

"My lineage will be established on Jaritāri, because he is the eldest. Sarisrikva will have offspring, extending the lineage of my ancestors.

"मेरा वंश जरीटारी पर स्थापित होगा, क्योंकि वह सबसे बड़ा है। सरिसरिकवा की संतान होगी, जो मेरे पूर्वजों के वंश को आगे बढ़ाएगी।"

स्तम्बमित्रस्तपः कुर्याद्द्रोणो ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः इत्येवमुक्त्वा प्रययौ पिता वो निर्घृणः पुरा

Stambamitra will practise austerities and Droṇa will be supreme in knowledge of the brāhman." uttering these words your father your cruel father abandoned you.

स्तम्भमित्र तपस्या करेगा और द्रोण ब्राह्मण ज्ञान में सर्वोच्च होगा।" ये शब्द कहकर आपके क्रूर पिता ने आपको त्याग दिया।

कमुपादाय शक्येत गन्तुं कस्यापदुत्तमा किं नु कृत्वा कृतं कार्यं भवेदिति च विह्वला

Who will I take with me and leave and who will suffer the greatest of calamities?"

मैं किसे अपने साथ लेकर चला जाऊँगा और कौन सबसे बड़ी विपत्ति सहेगा?”

नापश्यत्स्वधिया मोक्षं स्वसुतानां तदानलात् एवं ब्रुवन्तीं शार्ङ्गास्ते प्रत्यूचुरथ मातरम्

Through her own thoughts she did not see any means whereby her sons might escape from the fire.

अपने विचारों से उसे ऐसा कोई उपाय नजर नहीं आया जिससे उसके बेटे आग से बच सकें।

स्नेहमुत्सृज्य मातस्त्वं पत यत्र न हव्यवाट् अस्मासु हि विनष्टेषु भवितारः सुतास्तव त्वयि मातर्विनष्टायां न नः स्यात्कुलसंततिः

When she had spoken in this way, the four Śārṅgaka-s spoke to their mother. "O mother! Give up your love for us and go to a place where there is no fire. If we are destroyed, you will have other sons. O mother! But if you are destroyed, there will be no progeny in our lineage.

जब उसने इस प्रकार कहा, तो चारों शार्गकों ने अपनी माँ से बात की। "हे माँ! हमारे प्रति अपना प्रेम त्याग दो और ऐसे स्थान पर चली जाओ जहाँ आग न हो। यदि हम नष्ट हो गए, तो तुम्हारे और भी पुत्र होंगे। हे माँ! लेकिन यदि तुम नष्ट हो गई, तो हमारे वंश में कोई संतान नहीं होगी।"

अन्ववेक्ष्यैतदुभयं क्षमं स्याद्यत्कुलस्य नः तद्वै कर्तुं परः कालो मातरेष भवेत्तव

O mother! After taking into consideration these two outcomes, the time has come for you to do that which is best for our lineage.

हे माँ! इन दो परिणामों पर विचार करने के बाद, अब समय आ गया है कि आप वह करें जो हमारे वंश के लिए सर्वोत्तम हो।

मा वै कुलविनाशाय स्नेहं कार्षीः सुतेषु नः न हीदं कर्म मोघं स्याल्लोककामस्य नः पितुः

Out of love for your sons, do not do anything that will destroy our lineage. The act of our father, who wishes to attain the worlds, must not amount to nothing."

अपने पुत्रों के प्रति प्रेमवश ऐसा कोई कार्य न करो जिससे हमारा वंश नष्ट हो जाये। हमारे पिता का कृत्य, जो लोकों को प्राप्त करना चाहता है, कुछ भी नहीं होना चाहिए।"

जरितोवाच इदमाखोर्बिलं भूमौ वृक्षस्यास्य समीपतः तदाविशध्वं त्वरिता वह्नेरत्र न वो भयम्

Jaritā replied: "Near this tree, there is a rat hole in the ground. Swiftly enter the hole and you will suffer no fear from the fire there.

जरीटा ने उत्तर दिया: "इस पेड़ के पास, जमीन में एक चूहे का बिल है। तेजी से बिल में प्रवेश करें और आपको वहां आग से कोई डर नहीं होगा।

ततोऽहं पांसुना छिद्रमपिधास्यामि पुत्रकाः एवं प्रतिकृतं मन्ये ज्वलतः कृष्णवर्त्मनः

O sons! When you have entered it, I will cover the hole with dirt. That is the only means that I can think of to counter the blazing fire.

हे पुत्रो! जब तुम उसमें प्रवेश करोगे तो मैं छेद को मिट्टी से ढक दूंगा। धधकती आग का मुकाबला करने के लिए यही एकमात्र साधन है जिसके बारे में मैं सोच सकता हूँ।

तत एष्याम्यतीतेऽग्नौ विहर्तुं पांसुसंचयम् रोचतामेष वोपायो विमोक्षाय हुताशनात्

When the fire has died out, I will return and remove the mās-s of dirt. If you wish to escape from the fire, listen to these words of mine."

शार्ङ्गका ऊचुः अबर्हान्मांसभूतान्नः क्रव्यादाखुर्विनाशयेत् पश्यमाना भयमिदं न शक्ष्यामो निषेवितुम्

The Śārṅgaka-s said: "We are only masses of flesh, without feathers, and the carnivorous rat will destroy us. On beholding this fear, we cannot enter.

शारंगकों ने कहा: "हम केवल मांस के ढेर हैं, बिना पंखों के, और मांसाहारी चूहा हमें नष्ट कर देगा। इस डर को देखते हुए, हम प्रवेश नहीं कर सकते।

कथमग्निर्न नो दह्यात्कथमाखुर्न भक्षयेत् कथं न स्यात्पिता मोघः कथं माता ध्रियेत नः

We do not know how we can escape being burnt by the fire or being eaten by the rat. How can our father attain fulfilment and how can our mother survive?

हम नहीं जानते कि हम आग से जलने या चूहे द्वारा खाए जाने से कैसे बच सकते हैं। हमारे पिता कैसे तृप्ति प्राप्त कर सकते हैं और हमारी माँ कैसे जीवित रह सकती हैं?

बिल आखोर्विनाशः स्यादग्नेराकाशचारिणाम् अन्ववेक्ष्यैतदुभयं श्रेयान्दाहो न भक्षणम्

The dwellers of the sky will either be destroyed in the hole by the rat or by the fire. Considering both the possibilities, it is better to be burnt than to be eaten.

आकाश के निवासी या तो चूहे द्वारा या आग से बिल में नष्ट हो जायेंगे। दोनों संभावनाओं को ध्यान में रखते हुए, खाने से बेहतर है कि जला दिया जाए।

गर्हितं मरणं नः स्यादाखुना खादता बिले शिष्टादिष्टः परित्यागः शरीरस्य हुताशनात्

To die from being eaten by a rat in a hole is a most miserable death. But destruction of the body by fire has been sanctioned by the learned."

बिल में चूहे द्वारा खाए जाने से मरना सबसे दुखद मौत है। परन्तु अग्नि द्वारा शरीर का नाश करना विद्वानों द्वारा उचित ठहराया गया है।”
