शंतनुरुवाच आपवो नाम को न्वेष वसूनां किं च दुष्कृतम् यस्याभिशापात्ते सर्वे मानुषीं तनुमागताः

Śāntanu said: "Who was Āpava? What evil act was committed by the vasu-s that they were all cursed to be born in human wombs?

शांतनु ने कहा: "आपव कौन था? वसुओं ने ऐसा कौन सा बुरा कार्य किया था कि वे सभी मानव योनि में जन्म लेने के लिए शापित हो गए?"

अनेन च कुमारेण गङ्गादत्तेन किं कृतम् यस्य चैव कृतेनायं मानुषेषु निवत्स्यति

What has this son Gaṅgadatta done that he must now live among men? The vasu-s are lords of all the worlds.

इस पुत्र गंगादत्त ने ऐसा क्या किया है कि उसे अब मनुष्यों के बीच रहना पड़ रहा है? वसु सभी लोकों के स्वामी हैं।

ईशानाः सर्वलोकस्य वसवस्ते च वै कथम् मानुषेषूदपद्यन्त तन्ममाचक्ष्व जाह्नवि

O Jāhnavī! Why were they born among men? Tell me everything."

हे जाह्न्वी! वे मनुष्यों के बीच क्यों पैदा हुए? मुझे सब कुछ बताएं।"

वैशंपायन उवाच सैवमुक्ता ततो गङ्गा राजानमिदमब्रवीत् भर्तारं जाह्नवी देवी शंतनुं पुरुषर्षभम्

Vaiśampāyana said: Having been thus addressed, the divine goddess Jāhnavī Gāṅga addressed her husband King Śāntanu, bull among men. Gāṅga said,

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, दिव्य देवी जाह्न्वी गंगा ने अपने पति राजा शांतनु को पुरुषों में बैल कहकर संबोधित किया। गंगा ने कहा,

यं लेभे वरुणः पुत्रं पुरा भरतसत्तम वसिष्ठो नाम स मुनिः ख्यात आपव इत्युत

"O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Vāruṇa once had a son — the sage Vaśiṣṭha, later famous as Āpava.

"हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वरुण का एक बार एक पुत्र था - ऋषि वशिष्ठ, जो बाद में अपव के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुए।

तस्याश्रमपदं पुण्यं मृगपक्षिगणान्वितम् मेरोः पार्श्वे नगेन्द्रस्य सर्वर्तुकुसुमावृतम्

His holy hermitage was along the side of Meru, the king of the mountains. It was populated with deer and birds and was always covered with flowers.

उनका पवित्र आश्रम पर्वतों के राजा मेरु के किनारे था। वह हिरणों और पक्षियों से बसा हुआ था और हमेशा फूलों से ढका रहता था।

स वारुणिस्तपस्तेपे तस्मिन्भरतसत्तम वने पुण्यकृतां श्रेष्ठः स्वादुमूलफलोदके

O best of the Bhārata lineage! Vāruṇa's son, supreme among those who perform sacred deeds, performed austerities in that forest, which had a plentiful supply of tasty roots, fruit and water.

हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! पवित्र कर्म करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ वरुण के पुत्र ने उस जंगल में तपस्या की, जिसमें स्वादिष्ट जड़ें, फल और पानी की प्रचुर आपूर्ति थी।

दक्षस्य दुहिता या तु सुरभीत्यतिगर्विता गां प्रजाता तु सा देवी कश्यपाद्भरतर्षभ

Dakṣa had a proud daughter named Surabhi. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Through Kāśyapa, that goddess gave birth to a cow for the welfare of that entire world.

दक्ष की सुरभि नाम की एक गौरवशाली पुत्री थी। हे भरत वंश में बैल! उस देवी ने कश्यप के माध्यम से उस संपूर्ण जगत के कल्याण के लिए एक गाय को जन्म दिया।

अनुग्रहार्थं जगतः सर्वकामदुघां वराम् तां लेभे गां तु धर्मात्मा होमधेनुं स वारुणिः

This supreme cow was capable of fulfilling every desire.

यह परम गौ हर इच्छा को पूर्ण करने में सक्षम थी.

सा तस्मिंस्तापसारण्ये वसन्ती मुनिसेविते चचार रम्ये धर्म्ये च गौरपेतभया तदा

Vāruṇa's righteous son obtained this cow for the sake of performing sacrifices and the cow lived in that forest, populated by sages.

वरुण के धर्मात्मा पुत्र ने यज्ञ करने के निमित्त यह गाय प्राप्त की थी और वह गाय ऋषि-मुनियों से भरे उस वन में रहती थी।

अथ तद्वनमाजग्मुः कदाचिद्भरतर्षभ पृथ्वाद्या वसवः सर्वे देवदेवर्षिसेवितम्

Fearlessly, she grazed in those sacred and lovely woods. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Once, all the divine vasu-s, with Pṛthu at their head, came to visit that forest, frequented by the gods and the devarṣi-s.

वह निडर होकर उन पवित्र और मनमोहक जंगलों में चरती रही। हे भरत वंश में बैल! एक बार, सभी दिव्य वसु, पृथु को प्रमुखता से लेकर, उस वन में घूमने आए, जहां अक्सर देवता और देवर्षि आते थे।

ते सदारा वनं तच्च व्यचरन्त समन्ततः रेमिरे रमणीयेषु पर्वतेषु वनेषु च

With their wives, they roamed in the forest and made love in its lovely mountains and woods.

वे अपनी पत्नियों के साथ जंगल में घूमते थे और उसके सुंदर पहाड़ों और जंगलों में प्यार करते थे।

तत्रैकस्य तु भार्या वै वसोर्वासवविक्रम सा चरन्ती वने तस्मिन्गां ददर्श सुमध्यमा या सा वसिष्ठस्य मुनेः सर्वकामधुगुत्तमा

O you who are as valorous as Vāsava himself! A slender-waisted wife of one of the vasu-s saw the supreme cow, which belonged to the sage Vaśiṣṭha and was capable of fulfilling every desire, roaming in the forest.

हे आप जो स्वयं वासव के समान वीर हैं! वसुओं में से एक की पतली कमर वाली पत्नी ने जंगल में घूमते हुए सर्वोच्च गाय को देखा, जो ऋषि वशिष्ठ की थी और हर इच्छा को पूरा करने में सक्षम थी।

सा विस्मयसमाविष्टा शीलद्रविणसंपदा दिवे वै दर्शयामास तां गां गोवृषभेक्षण

She was amazed at its conduct, power and riches and showed it to Dyou, who had eyes like those of a bull."

वह इसके आचरण, शक्ति और धन से आश्चर्यचकित थी और उसने इसे डयू को दिखाया, जिसकी आँखें बैल की तरह थीं।"

स्वापीनां च सुदोग्ध्रीं च सुवालधिमुखां शुभाम् उपपन्नां गुणैः सर्वैः शीलेनानुत्तमेन च

The cow was well fed and yielded plenty of milk. It had a beautiful tail and handsome face. It had all the qualities and was supreme in its conduct.

गाय अच्छी तरह से पोषित थी और भरपूर दूध देती थी। इसकी एक सुंदर पूँछ और सुंदर चेहरा था। इसमें सभी गुण थे और इसका आचरण सर्वोच्च था।

एवंगुणसमायुक्तां वसवे वसुनन्दिनी दर्शयामास राजेन्द्र पुरा पौरवनन्दन

O lord of kings! O descendant of the Pūru lineage! So great were its qualities that the vasu's wife showed it to the vasu.

हे राजाओं के स्वामी! हे पुरु वंश के वंशज! इसके गुण इतने महान थे कि वसु की पत्नी ने इसे वसु को दिखाया।

द्यौस्तदा तां तु दृष्ट्वैव गां गजेन्द्रेन्द्रविक्रम उवाच राजंस्तां देवीं तस्या रूपगुणान्वदन्

O you who are like the king of elephants! O you who are like Indra in valour! Dyou saw that cow, with its beauty and qualities.

हे हाथियों के राजा के समान! हे वीरता में इन्द्र के समान हे! द्यौ ने उस गाय को उसके सौंदर्य और गुणों सहित देखा।

एषा गौरुत्तमा देवि वारुणेरसितेक्षणे ऋषेस्तस्य वरारोहे यस्येदं वनमुत्तमम्

O king! He then told the goddess, 'O goddess with the dark eyes! O one with the beautiful hips! O one with slender waist! This supreme cow belongs to the riṣi who is Vāruṇa's son. He is the owner of this supreme forest.

हे राजा! फिर उसने देवी से कहा, 'हे काली आंखों वाली देवी! हे सुन्दर नितंबों वाले! हे पतली कमर वाले! यह सर्वोच्च गाय ऋषि की है जो वरुण के पुत्र हैं। वह इस परम वन का स्वामी है।

अस्याः क्षीरं पिबेन्मर्त्यः स्वादु यो वै सुमध्यमे दश वर्षसहस्राणि स जीवेत्स्थिरयौवनः

A person who drinks this cow's tasty milk will live for 10,000 years with undiminished youth.

जो मनुष्य इस गाय का स्वादिष्ट दूध पीएगा, वह 10,000 वर्ष तक अक्षुण्ण यौवन के साथ जीवित रहेगा।

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु सा देवी नृपोत्तम सुमध्यमा तमुवाचानवद्याङ्गी भर्तारं दीप्ततेजसम्

O supreme among kings! When that slender-waisted goddess of unblemished form heard these words, she told her husband, whose energy was radiant.

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! जब उस निष्कलंक रूप वाली पतली कमर वाली देवी ने ये शब्द सुने, तो उसने अपने पति को, जिनकी ऊर्जा दीप्तिमान थी, बताया।

अस्ति मे मानुषे लोके नरदेवात्मजा सखी नाम्ना जिनवती नाम रूपयौवनशालिनी

I have a friend in this world of men and she is the daughter of a king. Her name is Jinavati and she is young and beautiful.

इस इंसान की दुनिया में मेरी एक दोस्त है और वह एक राजा की बेटी है। उसका नाम जिनवती है और वह युवा और सुंदर है।

उशीनरस्य राजर्षेः सत्यसंधस्य धीमतः दुहिता प्रथिता लोके मानुषे रूपसंपदा

She is the daughter of rājarṣi Uṣīnara, who is truthful and intelligent. This daughter is famous in the world of men because of the wealth of her beauty.

वह राजर्षि उशीनर की बेटी है, जो सच्ची और बुद्धिमान है। यह बेटी अपनी खूबसूरती के दम पर मर्दों की दुनिया में मशहूर है।

तस्या हेतोर्महाभाग सवत्सां गां ममेप्सिताम् आनयस्वामरश्रेष्ठ त्वरितं पुण्यवर्धन

O immensely fortunate one! I wish to obtain this cow and its calf for her. O best of the gods! O one who increases good deeds! Please bring them quickly.

हे परम भाग्यशाली! मैं उसके लिए यह गाय और उसका बछड़ा प्राप्त करना चाहता हूँ। हे देवश्रेष्ठ! हे शुभ कर्मों को बढ़ाने वाले! कृपया उन्हें जल्दी ले आओ.

यावदस्याः पयः पीत्वा सा सखी मम मानद मानुषेषु भवत्वेका जरारोगविवर्जिता

O one who grants pride! On drinking the milk, my friend will be the only one in the world of men to be freed from age and disease.

हे गौरव प्रदान करने वाले! दूध पीते ही मेरा मित्र संसार में एकमात्र मनुष्य होगा जो आयु और रोग से मुक्त हो जायेगा।

एतन्मम महाभाग कर्तुमर्हस्यनिन्दित प्रियं प्रियतरं ह्यस्मान्नास्ति मेऽन्यत्कथंचन

O immensely fortunate one! O unblemished one! Please do this for me. There is no other pleasure that would please me more.

हे परम भाग्यशाली! हे निष्कलंक! कृपया मेरे लिए यह करें. ऐसा कोई दूसरा सुख नहीं है जो मुझे अधिक प्रसन्न कर सके।

एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्या देव्याः प्रियचिकीर्षया पृथ्वाद्यैर्भ्रातृभिः सार्धं द्यौस्तदा तां जहार गाम्

Hearing the words of the goddess, Dyou wished to please her and stole the cow with the help of Pṛthu and his other brothers.

देवी के वचन सुनकर द्यौ ने उन्हें प्रसन्न करने की इच्छा की और पृथु तथा अपने अन्य भाइयों की सहायता से गाय को चुरा लिया।

तया कमलपत्राक्ष्या नियुक्तो द्यौस्तदा नृप ऋषेस्तस्य तपस्तीव्रं न शशाक निरीक्षितुम् हृता गौः सा तदा तेन प्रपातस्तु न तर्कितः

O king! Instructed by his lotus-eyed wife, Dyou did not think about the great ascetic powers of the riṣi who owned her. He failed to consider that the stealing of the cow would lead to his downfall.

हे राजा! अपनी कमल-नेत्र पत्नी से प्रेरित होकर, डयू ने उस ऋषि की महान तपस्वी शक्तियों के बारे में नहीं सोचा जो उसके स्वामी थे। वह इस बात पर विचार करने में असफल रहा कि गाय की चोरी उसके पतन का कारण बनेगी।

अथाश्रमपदं प्राप्तः फलान्यादाय वारुणिः न चापश्यत गां तत्र सवत्सां काननोत्तमे

In the evening, Vāruṇa's son returned to the hermitage with the fruit he had collected.

शाम को, वरुण का पुत्र अपने द्वारा एकत्र किये गये फल के साथ आश्रम में लौट आया।

ततः स मृगयामास वने तस्मिंस्तपोधनः नाध्यगच्छच्च मृगयंस्तां गां मुनिरुदारधीः

He did not see the cow and her calf in that supreme wood. Then the one blessed with the power of austerities looked for her in the forest.

उस सर्वोच्च लकड़ी में उसे गाय और उसका बछड़ा दिखाई नहीं दिया। तब तपस्या के बल से सम्पन्न भगवान ने उसे वन में ढूँढ़ा।

ज्ञात्वा तथापनीतां तां वसुभिर्दिव्यदर्शनः ययौ क्रोधवशं सद्यः शशाप च वसूंस्तदा

But though he searched, the sage could not find her. Through his divine sight, he then found that she had been stolen by the vasu-s. His anger arose and he cursed the vasu-s.

लेकिन खोज करने पर भी ऋषि उसे नहीं पा सके। अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से उन्हें तब पता चला कि वह वसुओं द्वारा चुराई गई थी। उनका क्रोध भड़क उठा और उन्होंने वसुओं को श्राप दे दिया।

यस्मान्मे वसवो जह्रुर्गां वै दोग्ध्रीं सुवालधिम् तस्मात्सर्वे जनिष्यन्ति मानुषेषु न संशयः

Because the vasu-s have stolen my cow which yields sweet milk and has a handsome tail, there is no doubt that they will all be born as men.

चूँकि वसुओं ने मेरी मीठा दूध देने वाली और सुन्दर पूँछ वाली गाय को चुरा लिया है, इसलिए इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि वे सभी मनुष्य के रूप में जन्म लेंगे।

एवं शशाप भगवान्वसूंस्तान्मुनिसत्तमः वशं कोपस्य संप्राप्त आपवो भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Thus did the illustrious Āpava, supreme among sages, curse the vasu-s in his anger.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! इस प्रकार ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ महामहिम अपव ने क्रोध में आकर वसुओं को श्राप दे दिया।

शप्त्वा च तान्महाभागस्तपस्येव मनो दधे एवं स शप्तवान्राजन्वसूनष्टौ तपोधनः महाप्रभावो ब्रह्मर्षिर्देवान्रोषसमन्वितः

Having cursed them, the illustrious one returned to his austerities. O king! Thus, in his wrath, did the one blessed with the power of austerities curse the eight vasu-s.

उन्हें शाप देकर वह महाबली अपनी तपस्या में लौट गये। हे राजा! इस प्रकार, अपने क्रोध में, तपस्या की शक्ति से धन्य व्यक्ति ने आठ वसुओं को शाप दे दिया।

अथाश्रमपदं प्राप्य तं स्म भूयो महात्मनः शप्ताः स्म इति जानन्त ऋषिं तमुपचक्रमुः

The riṣi was immensely powerful and knew the nature of the brāhman. As soon as they knew that they had been cursed by the riṣi, the gods went to the hermitage of the great-souled one.

ऋषि अत्यंत शक्तिशाली थे और ब्राह्मण के स्वभाव को जानते थे। जैसे ही उन्हें पता चला कि उन्हें ऋषि द्वारा शाप दिया गया है, देवता महात्मा के आश्रम में गए।

प्रसादयन्तस्तमृषिं वसवः पार्थिवर्षभ न लेभिरे च तस्मात्ते प्रसादमृषिसत्तमात् आपवात्पुरुषव्याघ्र सर्वधर्मविशारदात्

O bull among kings! The vasu-s tried to pacify the riṣi. O tiger among men! But they failed to obtain the grace of Āpava, who was learned in all dharma and was supreme among riṣis.

हे राजाओं में बैल! वसुओं ने ऋषि को शांत करने की कोशिश की। हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! लेकिन वे अपव की कृपा प्राप्त करने में असफल रहे, जो सभी धर्मों में विद्वान थे और ऋषियों में सर्वोच्च थे।

उवाच च स धर्मात्मा सप्त यूयं धरादयः अनु संवत्सराच्छापमोक्षं वै समवाप्स्यथ

The righteous sage said, "O Dhārā! You and the other vasu-s have been cursed. But you will all be freed from your curse within a year.

धर्मात्मा ऋषि ने कहा, "हे धरा! तुम्हें और अन्य वसुओं को शाप दिया गया है। लेकिन तुम सभी एक वर्ष के भीतर अपने शाप से मुक्त हो जाओगे।

अयं तु यत्कृते यूयं मया शप्ताः स वत्स्यति द्यौस्तदा मानुषे लोके दीर्घकालं स्वकर्मणा

But Dyou is the one whose act has led to your being cursed by me. Because of his own deeds, he will have to live in the world of men for a long time.

परन्तु तू वही है जिसके कृत्य के कारण तुझे मेरे द्वारा शाप मिला है। अपने कर्मों के कारण उसे लम्बे समय तक मनुष्य लोक में रहना पड़ेगा।

नानृतं तच्चिकीर्षामि युष्मान्क्रुद्धो यदब्रुवम् न प्रजास्यति चाप्येष मानुषेषु महामनाः

Though uttered in anger, my words cannot amount to a falsehood. However, the great-souled one will not have offspring in the world of men.

यद्यपि क्रोध में कहे गए मेरे शब्द झूठ नहीं हो सकते। हालाँकि, उस महान आत्मा की मनुष्यों की दुनिया में कोई संतान नहीं होगी।

भविष्यति च धर्मात्मा सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः पितुः प्रियहिते युक्तः स्त्रीभोगान्वर्जयिष्यति एवमुक्त्वा वसून्सर्वाञ्जगाम भगवानृषिः

He will be devoted to dharma and will be skilled in the usage of all weapons. He will be engaged in doing that which brings his father pleasure and he will forsake pleasure with women." Having addressed all the vasu-s in this way, the great riṣi went away. And all the vasu-s then came to me together.

वह धर्म के प्रति समर्पित होगा और सभी हथियारों के उपयोग में कुशल होगा। वह उस कार्य में लगा रहेगा जिससे उसके पिता को प्रसन्नता मिलती है और वह स्त्रियों के साथ सुख का त्याग कर देगा।" इस प्रकार सभी वसुओं को संबोधित करके, महान ऋषि चले गए। और सभी वसु एक साथ मेरे पास आए।

ततो मामुपजग्मुस्ते समस्ता वसवस्तदा अयाचन्त च मां राजन्वरं स च मया कृतः जाताञ्जातान्प्रक्षिपास्मान्स्वयं गङ्गे त्वमम्भसि

"O king! They craved a boon from me. O Gāṅga! As soon as each one of us is born, you should yourself throw us into the water.

"हे राजा! वे मुझसे वरदान चाहते थे। हे गंगा! जैसे ही हम में से प्रत्येक का जन्म हो, तुम स्वयं हमें पानी में फेंक देना।

एवं तेषामहं सम्यक्शप्तानां राजसत्तम मोक्षार्थं मानुषाल्लोकाद्यथावत्कृतवत्यहम्

O supreme among kings! I agreed and acted accordingly, in order to free them from a life in the world of men, a consequence of the curse.

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! मैं सहमत हो गया और तदनुसार कार्य किया, ताकि उन्हें श्राप के परिणामस्वरूप मनुष्यों की दुनिया में जीवन से मुक्त किया जा सके।

अयं शापादृषेस्तस्य एक एव नृपोत्तम द्यौ राजन्मानुषे लोके चिरं वत्स्यति भारत

O best of kings! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O king! Dyou alone will have to live in the world of men for a long time, because of the riṣi's curse."

हे राजाश्रेष्ठ! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे राजा! ऋषि के श्राप के कारण तुम्हें अकेले ही लंबे समय तक मनुष्यों की दुनिया में रहना होगा।

एतदाख्याय सा देवी तत्रैवान्तरधीयत आदाय च कुमारं तं जगामाथ यथेप्सितम्

Having completed the account, the goddess immediately vanished. Taking her son with her, she went away to wherever she wished to go.

हिसाब पूरा करने के बाद, देवी तुरंत गायब हो गईं। वह अपने बेटे को साथ लेकर जहां जाना चाहती थी वहां चली गई।

स तु देवव्रतो नाम गाङ्गेय इति चाभवत् द्विनामा शंतनोः पुत्रः शंतनोरधिको गुणैः

That son of Śāntanu came to be known under two names — Devavrata and Gāṅgeya. He surpassed Śāntanu in all his qualities.

शांतनु के उस पुत्र को दो नामों से जाना जाता है - देवव्रत और गांगेय। वह अपने सभी गुणों में शांतनु से आगे निकल गया।

शंतनुश्चापि शोकार्तो जगाम स्वपुरं ततः तस्याहं कीर्तयिष्यामि शंतनोरमितान्गुणान्

With sorrow in his heart, Śāntanu then returned to his own capital. I will now recount for you Śāntanu's many qualities

मन में दुःख लेकर शांतनु अपनी राजधानी में लौट आये। अब मैं आपको शांतनु के अनेक गुणों के बारे में बताऊंगा

महाभाग्यं च नृपतेर्भारतस्य यशस्विनः यस्येतिहासो द्युतिमान्महाभारतमुच्यते

and the great fortune of this famous king, who was from the Bhārata lineage and whose illustrious history is known as the Mahābhārata.

और इस प्रसिद्ध राजा का महान भाग्य, जो भरत वंश से था और जिसका गौरवशाली इतिहास महाभारत के नाम से जाना जाता है।
