वैशंपायन उवाच ततो मृगसहस्राणि हत्वा विपुलवाहनः राजा मृगप्रसङ्गेन वनमन्यद्विवेश ह

Vaiśampāyana said: Having killed thousands of animals, the king and his many mounts entered another forest to hunt deer.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हजारों जानवरों को मारने के बाद, राजा और उसके कई घुड़सवार हिरणों का शिकार करने के लिए दूसरे जंगल में चले गए।

एक एवोत्तमबलः क्षुत्पिपासासमन्वितः स वनस्यान्तमासाद्य महदीरिणमासदत्

Though supremely strong, he was hungry and thirsty. Travelling alone, he penetrated the deep forest until he came to a vast wilderness.

परम बलशाली होते हुए भी वह भूखा-प्यासा था। अकेले यात्रा करते हुए, वह गहरे जंगल में घुस गया जब तक कि वह एक विशाल जंगल में नहीं पहुंच गया।

तच्चाप्यतीत्य नृपतिरुत्तमाश्रमसंयुतम् मनःप्रह्लादजननं दृष्टिकान्तमतीव च शीतमारुतसंयुक्तं जगामान्यन्महद्वनम्

Passing beyond this, he came to a wood that was full of holy pilgrimages, beautiful to the eyes and a joy to the heart. Beyond this, he came to another great wood where a cool breeze blew.

इससे आगे बढ़ते हुए, वह एक जंगल के पास आया जो पवित्र तीर्थों से भरा हुआ था, आँखों को सुंदर और दिल को खुशी देने वाला था। इसके आगे वह एक और बड़े जंगल के पास आया जहाँ ठंडी हवा चल रही थी।

पुष्पितैः पादपैः कीर्णमतीव सुखशाद्वलम् विपुलं मधुरारावैर्नादितं विहगैस्तथा

The trees were full of flowers and soft gras-s extended on all sides. The great wood echoed with the sweet songs of birds.

पेड़ हर तरफ फूलों और मुलायम घास से भरे हुए थे। विशाल जंगल पक्षियों के मधुर गीतों से गूँज उठा।

प्रवृद्धविटपैर्वृक्षैः सुखच्छायैः समावृतम् षट्पदाघूर्णितलतं लक्ष्म्या परमया युतम्

There were trees all around, with branches that offered pleasant shade. Bees swarmed over the creepers and there was a supreme beauty there.

चारों ओर पेड़ थे, जिनकी शाखाएँ सुखद छाया देती थीं। मधुमक्खियाँ लताओं पर मंडरा रही थीं और वहाँ परम सौन्दर्य था।

नापुष्पः पादपः कश्चिन्नाफलो नापि कण्टकी षट्पदैर्वाप्यनाकीर्णस्तस्मिन्वै काननेऽभवत्

There was no tree without flowers and fruit and none with thorns. Nor did that wood have one not made dark with swarming bees.

ऐसा कोई वृक्ष नहीं था जिसमें फूल और फल न हों और कोई भी कांटों वाला न हो। न ही वह लकड़ी मधुमक्खियों के झुंड से काली पड़ी थी।

विहगैर्नादितं पुष्पैरलंकृतमतीव च सर्वर्तुकुसुमैर्वृक्षैरतीव सुखशाद्वलम् मनोरमं महेष्वासो विवेश वनमुत्तमम्

Resounding with the sweet songs of birds, adorned with beautiful flowers that blossomed in all seasons, with the pleasant shade of blossoming trees everywhere, and with pleasant expanses of gras-s, that supreme wood was beautiful. And the great archer entered it.

पक्षियों के मधुर गीतों से गूंजता हुआ, सभी मौसमों में खिलने वाले सुंदर फूलों से सुशोभित, हर जगह खिलने वाले पेड़ों की सुखद छाया और घास के सुखद विस्तार के साथ, वह सर्वोच्च लकड़ी सुंदर थी। और महान धनुर्धर उसमें प्रवेश कर गया।

मारुतागलितास्तत्र द्रुमाः कुसुमशालिनः पुष्पवृष्टिं विचित्रां स्म व्यसृजंस्ते पुनः पुनः

Bedecked with flowers, the trees were shaken by the breeze and repeatedly showered wonderful flowers.

फूलों से सजे हुए पेड़ हवा के झोंकों से हिल रहे थे और बार-बार अद्भुत फूलों की वर्षा कर रहे थे।

दिवस्पृशोऽथ संघुष्टाः पक्षिभिर्मधुरस्वरैः विरेजुः पादपास्तत्र विचित्रकुसुमाम्बराः

They rose up into the sky, full of the sweet songs of birds. The trees there were attired in many-coloured garments of wonderful flowers.

वे पक्षियों के मधुर गीतों से भरे हुए आकाश की ओर उठे। वहाँ के पेड़ अद्भुत फूलों के कई रंग-बिरंगे परिधान पहने हुए थे।

तेषां तत्र प्रवालेषु पुष्पभारावनामिषु रुवन्ति रावं विहगाः षट्पदैः सहिता मृदु

They were heavy with the weight of new shoots and flowers and full of the sweet songs of birds and bees.

वे नई कोपलों और फूलों के भार से भारी थे और पक्षियों और मधुमक्खियों के मधुर गीतों से भरे हुए थे।

तत्र प्रदेशांश्च बहून्कुसुमोत्करमण्डितान् लतागृहपरिक्षिप्तान्मनसः प्रीतिवर्धनान् संपश्यन्स महातेजा बभूव मुदितस्तदा

On seeing that expanse, adorned with many flowers and surrounded by pleasant creepers that seemed to form canopies, the greatly energetic one was delighted.

अनेक पुष्पों से सुशोभित तथा छतरियों के समान प्रतीत होने वाली मनोहर लताओं से घिरे हुए उस विस्तार को देखकर अत्यंत ऊर्जावान व्यक्ति प्रसन्न हो गया।

परस्पराश्लिष्टशाखैः पादपैः कुसुमाचितैः अशोभत वनं तत्तैर्महेन्द्रध्वजसंनिभैः

With branches laden with flowers intertwined with one another, the wood then seemed to shine like Indra's pennant.

फूलों से लदी शाखाओं के एक-दूसरे से गुंथे होने के कारण, लकड़ी इंद्र की पताका की तरह चमकती हुई प्रतीत होती थी।

सुखशीतः सुगन्धी च पुष्परेणुवहोऽनिलः परिक्रामन्वने वृक्षानुपैतीव रिरंसया

A pleasant, cool and fragrant breeze, carrying the pollen of flowers, wafted around the wood and sported with the trees.

एक सुखद, ठंडी और सुगंधित हवा, फूलों के पराग को लेकर, जंगल के चारों ओर घूमती थी और पेड़ों के साथ खेलती थी।

एवंगुणसमायुक्तं ददर्श स वनं नृपः नदीकच्छोद्भवं कान्तमुच्छ्रितध्वजसंनिभम्

Such were the qualities of the wood the king gazed upon. It was located in the delta of a river and had the beauty of flagpoles.

राजा की नज़र उस लकड़ी के गुणों पर पड़ी। यह एक नदी के डेल्टा में स्थित था और इसमें ध्वजस्तंभों की सुंदरता थी।

प्रेक्षमाणो वनं तत्तु सुप्रहृष्टविहंगमम् आश्रमप्रवरं रम्यं ददर्श च मनोरमम्

In that forest, the abode of extremely happy birds, the king saw a charming hermitage.

अत्यंत प्रसन्न पक्षियों के निवास स्थान उस वन में राजा को एक मनमोहक आश्रम दिखाई दिया।

नानावृक्षसमाकीर्णं संप्रज्वलितपावकम् यतिभिर्वालखिल्यैश्च वृतं मुनिगणान्वितम्

It was full of many trees and blazing fires. Many yati-s, vālakhilya-s and other groups of sages were there.

वह अनेक वृक्षों और धधकती आग से भरा हुआ था। अनेक यति, वाल्खिल्य और ऋषियों के अन्य समूह वहां थे।

अग्न्यागारैश्च बहुभिः पुष्पसंस्तरसंस्तृतम् महाकच्छैर्बृहद्भिश्च विभ्राजितमतीव च

Many places for sacrificial fires were around and the flowers formed carpets on the ground.

यज्ञ-अग्नि के लिए कई स्थान आसपास थे और फूलों से जमीन पर कालीन बने हुए थे।

मालिनीमभितो राजन्नदीं पुण्यां सुखोदकाम् नैकपक्षिगणाकीर्णां तपोवनमनोरमाम् तत्र व्यालमृगान्सौम्यान्पश्यन्प्रीतिमवाप सः

O king! The sacred river Mālinī, which gladdens the heart, flowed by and created beautiful and large pools of water. It was full of many waterfowl and made the hermitage even more beautiful. The king was delighted to see predatory beasts and deer peacefully together.

हे राजा! हृदय को आनंदित करने वाली पवित्र मालिनी नदी बहती थी और पानी के सुंदर और बड़े तालाब बनाती थी। वह अनेक जलपक्षियों से भरा हुआ था और आश्रम को और भी सुंदर बना रहा था। शिकारी जानवरों और हिरणों को शांतिपूर्वक एक साथ देखकर राजा को बहुत खुशी हुई।

तं चाप्यतिरथः श्रीमानाश्रमं प्रत्यपद्यत देवलोकप्रतीकाशं सर्वतः सुमनोहरम्

The king, whose chariot no one could obstruct, entered that enchanting hermitage, which was like the world of the gods and beautiful everywhere.

राजा, जिनके रथ को कोई रोक नहीं सकता था, उस मनमोहक आश्रम में प्रवेश किया, जो देवताओं की दुनिया के समान था और हर जगह सुंदर था।

नदीमाश्रमसंश्लिष्टां पुण्यतोयां ददर्श सः सर्वप्राणभृतां तत्र जननीमिव विष्ठिताम्

He saw the river with sacred waters embracing the hermitage, as if the mother of all beings was established there.

उन्होंने पवित्र जल वाली नदी को आश्रम से लिपटते हुए देखा, मानो सभी प्राणियों की माता वहीं स्थापित हो गई हो।

सचक्रवाकपुलिनां पुष्पफेनप्रवाहिनीम् सकिंनरगणावासां वानरर्क्षनिषेविताम्

Cakravāka birds swarmed along its banks. The water carried flowers and foam. Groups of kinnara-s and monkeys and bears lived there.

चक्रवाक पक्षी इसके किनारों पर झुंड में रहते थे। पानी में फूल और झाग बहे। वहां किन्नरों और बंदरों-भालुओं के समूह रहते थे।

पुण्यस्वाध्यायसंघुष्टां पुलिनैरुपशोभिताम् मत्तवारणशार्दूलभुजगेन्द्रनिषेविताम्

The sound of holy chants and studying resounded along the sand banks. Rutting elephants, tigers and gigantic snakes frequented the place.

रेत के तटों पर पवित्र मंत्रों और अध्ययन की ध्वनि गूँज रही थी। हाथी, बाघ और विशाल सांप उस स्थान पर अक्सर आते रहते थे।

नदीमाश्रमसंबद्धां दृष्ट्वाश्रमपदं तथा चकाराभिप्रवेशाय मतिं स नृपतिस्तदा

Having seen the sacred hermitage by the river, the king then desired to enter it.

नदी के किनारे पवित्र आश्रम देखकर राजा की उसमें प्रवेश करने की इच्छा हुई।

अलंकृतं द्वीपवत्या मालिन्या रम्यतीरया नरनारायणस्थानं गङ्गयेवोपशोभितम् मत्तबर्हिणसंघुष्टं प्रविवेश महद्वनम्

Ornamented by the river Mālinī with beautiful banks and islands,it was like the abode of Nara and Nārāyaṇa, beloved by the waters of the Gāṅga and echoing with the sound of madly dancing peacocks.

सुंदर तटों और द्वीपों से युक्त मालिनी नदी से सुशोभित, यह नर और नारायण के निवास के समान था, जो गंगा के जल से प्रिय था और पागलों की तरह नाचते हुए मोरों की ध्वनि से गूंज रहा था।

तत्स चैत्ररथप्रख्यं समुपेत्य नरेश्वरः अतीव गुणसंपन्नमनिर्देश्यं च वर्चसा महर्षिं काश्यपं द्रष्टुमथ कण्वं तपोधनम्

The bull among men entered the great wood, which resembled Citrarathā's garden. He wished to see the radiant maharṣi Kaṇva, descendant of Kāśyapa, blessed with all the qualities and the power of austerities.

मनुष्यों के बीच बैल उस विशाल जंगल में घुस गया, जो चित्ररथ के बगीचे जैसा दिखता था। वह कश्यप के वंशज तेजस्वी महर्षि कण्व को देखना चाहते थे, जो सभी गुणों और तपस्या की शक्ति से संपन्न थे।

रथिनीमश्वसंबाधां पदातिगणसंकुलाम् अवस्थाप्य वनद्वारि सेनामिदमुवाच सः

He stopped his retinue of chariots, cavalry and infantry at the entry to the wood and told his soldiers,

उसने जंगल के प्रवेश द्वार पर अपने रथों, घुड़सवार सेना और पैदल सेना को रोका और अपने सैनिकों से कहा,

मुनिं विरजसं द्रष्टुं गमिष्यामि तपोधनम् काश्यपं स्थीयतामत्र यावदागमनं मम

"I will go to see the descendant of Kāśyapa, blessed with the power of austerities and free of passion. Remain here until I return."

"मैं तपस्या की शक्ति से संपन्न और जुनून से मुक्त कश्यप के वंशज से मिलने जाऊंगा। मेरे लौटने तक यहीं रहो।"

तद्वनं नन्दनप्रख्यमासाद्य मनुजेश्वरः क्षुत्पिपासे जहौ राजा हर्षं चावाप पुष्कलम्

As soon as he entered the wood, which was like Nandana, the lord of men derived great pleasure and for got his hunger and thirst.

जैसे ही वह नन्दन के समान जंगल में दाखिल हुआ, मनुष्यों के स्वामी को बहुत खुशी हुई और उसकी भूख और प्यास शांत हो गई।

सामात्यो राजलिङ्गानि सोऽपनीय नराधिपः पुरोहितसहायश्च जगामाश्रममुत्तमम् दिदृक्षुस्तत्र तमृषिं तपोराशिमथाव्ययम्

The ruler of men put aside his signs of kingship. He entered the supreme hermitage with only his priest and his adviser.

मनुष्यों के शासक ने अपने राजत्व के चिन्हों को किनारे रख दिया। उन्होंने केवल अपने पुजारी और सलाहकार के साथ सर्वोच्च आश्रम में प्रवेश किया।

ब्रह्मलोकप्रतीकाशमाश्रमं सोऽभिवीक्ष्य च षट्पदोद्गीतसंघुष्टं नानाद्विजगणायुतम्

He wished to see the sage whose store of ascetic powers was everlasting. He saw that the hermitage was like Brahmā's world, with buzzing bees and singing birds.

वह उस ऋषि के दर्शन करना चाहता था जिसकी तपस्वी शक्तियों का भण्डार अनन्त था। उन्होंने देखा कि आश्रम ब्रह्मा की दुनिया की तरह था, जिसमें मधुमक्खियाँ और चहचहाते पक्षी थे।

ऋचो बह्वृचमुख्यैश्च प्रेर्यमाणाः पदक्रमैः शुश्राव मनुजव्याघ्रो विततेष्विह कर्मसु

In one place, that tiger among men heard chanting of the Rig Veda, recited in proper word and metre by the best of Brāhmana-s, as they went about their work.

एक स्थान पर, मनुष्यों में से उस बाघ ने ऋग्वेद का जप सुना, जिसे सर्वोत्तम ब्राह्मणों द्वारा उचित शब्द और मीटर में सुनाया गया था, जब वे अपना काम कर रहे थे।

यज्ञविद्याङ्गविद्भिश्च क्रमद्भिश्च क्रमानपि अमितात्मभिः सुनियतैः शुशुभे स तदाश्रमः

Another place was adorned by those who were learned in various branches of sacrificial rituals. That hermitage was adorned by ascetics who were controlled and rigid in their vows.

एक अन्य स्थान उन लोगों द्वारा सुशोभित था जो यज्ञ अनुष्ठानों की विभिन्न शाखाओं में विद्वान थे। वह आश्रम उन तपस्वियों से सुशोभित था जो नियंत्रित और अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में कठोर थे।

अथर्ववेदप्रवराः पूगयाज्ञिक संमताः संहितामीरयन्ति स्म पदक्रमयुतां तु ते

In another place, those who were learned in the Atharva Veda, respected by the assembled, recited the saṃhitā-s in the proper tone and metre.

एक अन्य स्थान पर, जो लोग अथर्ववेद के विद्वान थे, उपस्थित लोगों द्वारा सम्मानित थे, उन्होंने उचित स्वर और छंद में संहिता का पाठ किया।

शब्दसंस्कारसंयुक्तं ब्रुवद्भिश्चापरैर्द्विजैः नादितः स बभौ श्रीमान्ब्रह्मलोक इवाश्रमः

In other places, Brāhmana-s learned in the science of tones recited other mantra-s, so that all these holy sounds made the hermitage seem like the illustrious world of Brahmā.

अन्य स्थानों पर, स्वर विज्ञान में विद्वान ब्राह्मणों ने अन्य मंत्रों का उच्चारण किया, ताकि इन सभी पवित्र ध्वनियों से आश्रम ब्रह्मा की शानदार दुनिया जैसा प्रतीत हो।

यज्ञसंस्कारविद्भिश्च क्रमशिक्षा विशारदैः न्यायतत्त्वार्थविज्ञानसंपन्नैर्वेदपारगैः

There were those who were skilled in the art of sacrifices and rules of recital. Others were learned in the Veda-s and knew the principles of logic, self-realization and salvation.

ऐसे लोग थे जो यज्ञ की कला और पाठ के नियमों में कुशल थे। अन्य लोग वेदों के विद्वान थे और तर्क, आत्म-साक्षात्कार और मोक्ष के सिद्धांतों को जानते थे।

नानावाक्यसमाहारसमवायविशारदैः विशेषकार्यविद्भिश्च मोक्षधर्मपरायणैः

There were those who knew the meaning of words and were accomplished in combining them. Others were skilled in special rituals and the rites for salvation.

ऐसे लोग थे जो शब्दों के अर्थ जानते थे और उन्हें संयोजित करने में निपुण थे। अन्य लोग मोक्ष के लिए विशेष अनुष्ठानों और अनुष्ठानों में कुशल थे।

स्थापनाक्षेपसिद्धान्तपरमार्थज्ञतां गतैः लोकायतिकमुख्यैश्च समन्तादनुनादितम्

Some were skilled in arguments, refuting redundant arguments and knew the secrets of words, philosophy and time. The sound of chanting and hymns was everywhere.

कुछ तर्क-वितर्क में कुशल, निरर्थक तर्कों का खण्डन करने वाले और शब्द, दर्शन तथा समय के रहस्यों को जानने वाले थे। हर तरफ मंत्रोच्चार और भजन की आवाज थी।

तत्र तत्र च विप्रेन्द्रान्नियतान्संशितव्रतान् जपहोमपरान्सिद्धान्ददर्श परवीरहा

The destroyer of enemy armies saw around him many learned Brāhmana-s of rigid vows, all engaged in meditation and offerings.

शत्रु सेनाओं के संहारक ने अपने चारों ओर कठोर व्रतों वाले बहुत से विद्वान ब्राह्मणों को देखा, जो सभी ध्यान और प्रसाद में लगे हुए थे।

आसनानि विचित्राणि पुष्पवन्ति महीपतिः प्रयत्नोपहितानि स्म दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमागमत्

The lord of the earth was astonished to see the beautiful and coloured seats that had been carefully laid out.

पृथ्वी का स्वामी सावधानी से बिछाए गए सुंदर और रंगीन आसन देखकर आश्चर्यचकित रह गया।

देवतायतनानां च पूजां प्रेक्ष्य कृतां द्विजैः ब्रह्मलोकस्थमात्मानं मेने स नृपसत्तमः

On observing the rituals with which the Brāhmana-s worshipped the gods, that supreme among kings thought that he was in the world of Brahmā.

जिस अनुष्ठान से ब्राह्मण देवताओं की पूजा करते थे, उसे देखकर राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ उस व्यक्ति ने सोचा कि वह ब्रह्मा के लोक में है।

स काश्यपतपोगुप्तमाश्रमप्रवरं शुभम् नातृप्यत्प्रेक्षमाणो वै तपोधनगणैर्युतम्

The more the king saw of the beautiful, holy and solitary hermitage of Kāśyapa's descendant, protected by his austerities and qualities, the more he wished to see.

राजा ने ज्यों-ज्यों कश्यप के वंशजों की तपस्या तथा गुणों से सुरक्षित, सुन्दर, पवित्र एवं एकान्त आश्रम को देखा, उतनी ही अधिक उसकी देखने की इच्छा हुई।

स काश्यपस्यायतनं महाव्रतै;र्वृतं समन्तादृषिभिस्तपोधनैः विवेश सामात्यपुरोहितोऽरिहा; विविक्तमत्यर्थमनोहरं शिवम्

Kāśyapa's descendant's hermitage was full of great riṣi-s, powerful in their austerities and rigid in their vows. Thus, the slayer of enemies entered there, with his adviser and his priest.

कश्यप के वंशज का आश्रम महान ऋषियों से भरा था, जो अपनी तपस्या में शक्तिशाली और अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में दृढ़ थे। इस प्रकार शत्रुओं का संहारक अपने सलाहकार तथा पुरोहित सहित वहाँ प्रविष्ट हुआ।
