संजय उवाच दृष्ट्वा तु संनिवृत्तांस्तान्संशप्तकगणान्पुनः वासुदेवं महात्मानमर्जुनः समभाषत

Sañjaya said: On seeing the saṃśaptaka army return again, Arjuna spoke to the great-souled Vāsudeva.

संजय ने कहा: संशप्तक सेना को फिर से लौटते देखकर, अर्जुन ने महान आत्मा वासुदेव से बात की।

चोदयाश्वान्हृषीकेश संशप्तकगणान्प्रति नैते हास्यन्ति संग्रामं जीवन्त इति मे मतिः

"O Hṛṣīkeśa! Drive the horses towards the army of the saṃśaptaka-s. They will not return alive from the battle. That is my view.

"हे हृषीकेश! घोड़ों को संशप्तकों की सेना की ओर ले चलो। वे युद्ध से जीवित नहीं लौटेंगे। यही मेरा विचार है।"

पश्य मेऽस्त्रबलं घोरं बाह्वोरिष्वसनस्य च अद्यैतान्पातयिष्यामि क्रुद्धो रुद्रः पशूनिव

Today, you will witness the terrible strength of my weapons and my arms. I will bring them down, like an angry Rudra against animals."

आज तुम मेरे अस्त्र-शस्त्रों और भुजाओं की भयंकर शक्ति देखोगे। मैं जानवरों के प्रति क्रोधित रुद्र की तरह उन्हें नीचे गिरा दूंगा।"

ततः कृष्णः स्मितं कृत्वा परिणन्द्य शिवेन तम् प्रावेशयत दुर्धर्षो यत्र यत्रैच्छदर्जुनः

Hearing this, Kṛṣṇā smiled and addressed him with auspicious words. The invincible one conveyed Arjuna to the spot where he desired to go.

यह सुनकर कृष्ण मुस्कुराए और उन्हें शुभ शब्दों से संबोधित किया। अजेय ने अर्जुन को उस स्थान पर पहुँचाया जहाँ वह जाना चाहता था।

बभ्राजे स रथोऽत्यर्थमुह्यमानो रणे तदा उह्यमानमिवाकाशे विमानं पाण्डुरैर्हयैः

They were radiant on a chariot drawn by white horses and because of this, seemed to cause a loss of the senses, like a vimāna that has risen in the sky.

वे श्वेत घोड़ों से जुते हुए रथ पर शोभायमान थे और इस कारण आकाश में उड़े हुए विमान के समान इंद्रियों को नष्ट करते हुए प्रतीत हो रहे थे।

मण्डलानि ततश्चक्रे गतप्रत्यागतानि च यथा शक्ररथो राजन्युद्धे देवासुरे पुरा

The chariot performed circular motions, it moved forwards and back. O king! It was like Śākra's chariot, in the battle between the gods and the āsura-s in ancient times.

रथ ने गोलाकार गति की, यह आगे और पीछे चला गया। हे राजा! यह प्राचीन काल में देवताओं और असुरों के बीच हुए युद्ध में शक्र के रथ की तरह था।

अथ नारायणाः क्रुद्धा विविधायुधपाणयः छादयन्तः शरव्रातैः परिवव्रुर्धनंजयम्

The angry Nārāyaṇa-s raised different kinds of weapons in their hands. They surrounded Dhanañjayā and enveloped him with a storm of arrows.

क्रोधित नारायण ने अपने हाथों में विभिन्न प्रकार के हथियार उठाए। उन्होंने धनंजय को घेर लिया और बाणों की बौछार से उसे घेर लिया।

अदृश्यं च मुहूर्तेन चक्रुस्ते भरतर्षभ कृष्णेन सहितं युद्धे कुन्तीपुत्रं धनंजयम्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! In that battle, they made Dhanañjayā, Kuntī's son, invisible, together with Kṛṣṇā.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उस युद्ध में, उन्होंने कृष्ण के साथ-साथ कुंती के पुत्र धनंजय को भी अदृश्य कर दिया।

क्रुद्धस्तु फल्गुनः संख्ये द्विगुणीकृतविक्रमः गाण्डीवमुपसंमृज्य तूर्णं जग्राह संयुगे

In that encounter, Phālguna became wrathful and showed double his valour. In that battle, he grasped the Gāṇḍīva and touched its string.

उस मुठभेड़ में, फाल्गुन क्रोधित हो गया और उसने अपनी वीरता दोगुनी कर दी। उस युद्ध में, उन्होंने गाण्डीव को पकड़ लिया और उसकी डोरी को छू लिया।

बद्ध्वा च भृकुटीं वक्त्रे क्रोधस्य प्रतिलक्षणम् देवदत्तं महाशङ्खं पूरयामास पाण्डवः

There were frowns on his forehead, a sign of rage. Pāṇḍava blew on the great conch shell Devadatta.

उसके माथे पर शिकन थी, जो गुस्से का संकेत था। पांडवों ने देवदत्त महान शंख बजाया।

अथास्त्रमरिसंघघ्नं त्वाष्ट्रमभ्यस्यदर्जुनः ततो रूपसहस्राणि प्रादुरासन्पृथक्पृथक्

Arjuna resorted to the weapon known as tvāṣṭra, which was capable of destroying large numbers of the enemy at the same time. Many thousand of separate forms appeared.

अर्जुन ने त्वस्त्र नामक हथियार का सहारा लिया, जो एक ही समय में बड़ी संख्या में शत्रुओं को नष्ट करने में सक्षम था। कई हजार अलग-अलग रूप प्रकट हुए।

आत्मनः प्रतिरूपैस्तैर्नानारूपैर्विमोहिताः अन्योन्यमर्जुनं मत्वा स्वमात्मानं च जघ्निरे

Confused by these many different forms, they began to kill each other. Thinking each other to be Arjuna, they began to kill each other.

इन अनेक रूपों से भ्रमित होकर वे एक-दूसरे को मारने लगे। वे एक-दूसरे को अर्जुन समझकर मारने लगे।

अयमर्जुनोऽयं गोविन्द इमौ यादवपाण्डवौ इति ब्रुवाणाः संमूढा जघ्नुरन्योन्यमाहवे

"This is Arjuna. This is Govinda. These are Yādava and Pāṇḍava." They were confused and speaking in this way, they killed each other in that battle.

"यह अर्जुन है। यह गोविंदा है। ये यादव और पांडव हैं।" वे भ्रमित हो गये और इस प्रकार बोलते हुए उन्होंने उस युद्ध में एक-दूसरे को मार डाला।

मोहिताः परमास्त्रेण क्षयं जग्मुः परस्परम् अशोभन्त रणे योधाः पुष्पिता इव किंशुकाः

They were confused by that supreme weapon and destroyed each other in this way. In that battle, the warriors were as beautiful as flowering kiṃśuka-s.

वे उस परम अस्त्र से भ्रमित हो गये और इस प्रकार एक-दूसरे को नष्ट कर दिया। उस युद्ध में, योद्धा खिले हुए किशुक-स के समान सुंदर थे।

ततः शरसहस्राणि तैर्विमुक्तानि भस्मसात् कृत्वा तदस्त्रं तान्वीराननयद्यमसादनम्

The thousands of arrows released by those brave ones were reduced by that weapon to ashes and it conveyed them to Yāma's abode.

उन वीरों द्वारा छोड़े गए हजारों बाणों को उस अस्त्र ने भस्म कर दिया और उन्हें यम के निवास तक पहुँचा दिया।

अथ प्रहस्य बीभत्सुर्ललित्थान्मालवानपि माचेल्लकांस्त्रिगर्तांश्च यौधेयांश्चार्दयच्छरैः

Bībhatsu laughed and used his arrows to shatter the Lallittha, Mālavā, Machellaka and Trigarta warriors.

बीभात्सु हँसा और उसने अपने बाणों से लल्लित्था, मालव, मचेलक और त्रिगर्त योद्धाओं को चकनाचूर कर दिया।

ते वध्यमाना वीरेण क्षत्रियाः कालचोदिताः व्यसृजञ्शरवर्षाणि पार्थे नानाविधानि च

Those brave kṣatriya-s were propelled by destiny. They were slaughtered and released many different showers of arrows towards Pārtha.

वे वीर क्षत्रिय नियति द्वारा प्रेरित थे। उनका वध कर दिया गया और पार्थ की ओर अनेक प्रकार के बाणों की वर्षा छोड़ी।

ततो नैवार्जुनस्तत्र न रथो न च केशवः प्रत्यदृश्यत घोरेण शरवर्षेण संवृतः

Shrouded by that terrible shower of arrows, Arjuna, Keśava or the chariot could no longer be seen there.

बाणों की उस भयानक वर्षा से घिरे हुए अर्जुन, केशव या रथ अब वहाँ दिखाई नहीं दे रहे थे।

ततस्ते लब्धलक्ष्यत्वादन्योन्यमभिचुक्रुशुः हतौ कृष्णाविति प्रीता वासांस्यादुधुवुस्तदा

On seeing that the arrows had found their mark, they told each other in delight. "Kṛṣṇā and Arjuna have been killed." They waved their garments in the air.

यह देखकर कि तीरों को अपना निशान मिल गया है, वे प्रसन्न होकर एक-दूसरे को बताने लगे। "कृष्ण और अर्जुन मारे गए हैं।" उन्होंने अपने कपड़े हवा में लहराये।

भेरीमृदङ्गशङ्खांश्च दध्मुर्वीराः सहस्रशः सिंहनादरवांश्चोग्रांश्चक्रिरे तत्र मारिष

The brave ones sounded thousands of drums, tambourines and conch shells. O venerable one! They emitted terrible roars, like lions.

वीरों ने हजारों ढोल, डफ और शंख बजाए। हे आदरणीय! वे सिंहों के समान भयंकर दहाड़ने लगे।

ततः प्रसिष्विदे कृष्णः खिन्नश्चार्जुनमब्रवीत् क्वासि पार्थ न पश्ये त्वां कच्चिज्जीवसि शत्रुहन्

Kṛṣṇā was covered in sweat and was exhausted. He told Arjuna, "O Pārtha! Where are you? I cannot see you. O slayer of enemies! Are you alive?"

कृष्ण पसीने से लथपथ थे और थक गये थे। उन्होंने अर्जुन से कहा, "हे पार्थ! तुम कहाँ हो? मैं तुम्हें नहीं देख सकता। हे शत्रुनाशक! क्या तुम जीवित हो?"

तस्य तं मानुषं भावं भावज्ञोऽऽज्ञाय पाण्डवः वायव्यास्त्रेण तैरस्तां शरवृष्टिमपाहरत्

He who knows all sentiments, thus adopted human sentiments. On discerning this, Pāṇḍava swiftly used the vāyavya weapon and dispelled that shower of arrows.

जो सभी भावनाओं को जानता है, उसने मानवीय भावनाओं को अपनाया। यह समझ आने पर पांडव ने तेजी से वायव्य अस्त्र का प्रयोग किया और बाणों की उस वर्षा को नष्ट कर दिया।

ततः संशप्तकव्रातान्साश्वद्विपरथायुधान् उवाह भगवान्वायुः शुष्कपर्णचयानिव

The illustrious Vāyu created a storm that blew away the saṃśaptaka-s, with their horses, elephants, chariots and weapons, as if they were heaps of dry leaves.

शानदार वायु ने एक तूफान पैदा किया जिसने संशप्तकों को उनके घोड़ों, हाथियों, रथों और हथियारों सहित उड़ा दिया, जैसे कि वे सूखे पत्तों के ढेर हों।

उह्यमानास्तु ते राजन्बह्वशोभन्त वायुना प्रडीनाः पक्षिणः काले वृक्षेभ्य इव मारिष

O king! As they were borne away by the wind, they looked beautiful. O venerable one! They were like birds, flying away from trees at the right time.

हे राजा! जैसे ही वे हवा से उड़ गए, वे सुंदर लग रहे थे। हे आदरणीय! वे पक्षियों की तरह थे, जो सही समय पर पेड़ों से उड़ जाते थे।

तांस्तथा व्याकुलीकृत्य त्वरमाणो धनंजयः जघान निशितैर्बाणैः सहस्राणि शतानि च

Having afflicted them in this way, Dhanañjayā swiftly killed hundreds and thousands of them with his sharp arrows.

इस प्रकार उन्हें पीड़ित करने के बाद, धनंजय ने तेजी से अपने तीखे बाणों से सैकड़ों और हजारों लोगों को मार डाला।

शिरांसि भल्लैरहरद्बाहूनपि च सायुधान् हस्तिहस्तोपमांश्चोरूञ्शरैरुर्व्यामपातयत्

He used broad-headed arrows to sever their heads and their arms, still grasping weapons. He used his arrows to bring down thighs that were like the trunks of elephants.

उसने उनके सिर और भुजाओं को काटने के लिए चौड़े सिर वाले तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया, फिर भी उनके पास हथियार थे। उसने अपने बाणों का प्रयोग हाथियों की सूंड जैसी जाँघों को नीचे गिराने के लिए किया।

पृष्ठच्छिन्नान्विचरणान्विमस्तिष्केक्षणाङ्गुलीन् नानाङ्गावयवैर्हीनांश्चकारारीन्धनंजयः

Some were wounded on their backs. Others lost their legs, or their heads, eyes and fingers. Dhanañjayā deprived their bodies of many limbs.

कुछ की पीठ पर घाव हो गये। दूसरों ने अपने पैर, या अपने सिर, आंखें और उंगलियां खो दीं। धनंजय ने उनके शरीर के कई अंग खो दिए।

गन्धर्वनगराकारान्विधिवत्कल्पितान्रथान् शरैर्विशकलीकुर्वंश्चक्रे व्यश्वरथद्विपान्

Their many chariots looked like the cities of gāndharva-s. He shattered them, and the horses, chariots and elephants, with his arrows.

उनके अनेक रथ गन्धर्वों के नगरों के समान प्रतीत होते थे। उसने अपने बाणों से उन्हें, घोड़ों, रथों और हाथियों को भी चकनाचूर कर दिया।

मुण्डतालवनानीव तत्र तत्र चकाशिरे छिन्नध्वजरथव्राताः केचित्केचित्क्वचित्क्वचित्

With the standards brought down, some of those groups of chariots looked like forests of palm trees, with the heads lopped off.

ध्वज गिराये जाने के बाद, रथों के उन समूहों में से कुछ सिर कटे हुए ताड़ के पेड़ों के जंगलों की तरह लग रहे थे।

सोत्तरायुधिनो नागाः सपताकाङ्कुशायुधाः पेतुः शक्राशनिहता द्रुमवन्त इवाचलाः

There were elephants with excellent weapons, standards, goads and warriors. They were brought down, like wooden mountains struck with Śākra's vajra.

वहाँ उत्कृष्ट हथियारों, ध्वजों, अंकुशों और योद्धाओं से युक्त हाथी थे। उन्हें नीचे लाया गया, जैसे कि शक्र के वज्र से लकड़ी के पहाड़ टूट गए थे।

चामरापीडकवचाः स्रस्तान्त्रनयनासवः सारोहास्तुरगाः पेतुः पार्थबाणहताः क्षितौ

There were horses with tails like whisks and armoured riders. Wounded by Pārtha's arrows, they fell down on the ground, with their entrails and eyes plucked out.

वहाँ मूंछों जैसी पूँछ वाले घोड़े और बख्तरबंद सवार थे। पार्थ के बाणों से घायल होकर वे भूमि पर गिर पड़े, उनकी अंतड़ियाँ और आँखें बाहर निकल आईं।

विप्रविद्धासिनखराश्छिन्नवर्मर्ष्टिशक्तयः पत्तयश्छिन्नवर्माणः कृपणं शेरते हताः

Foot soldiers held swords that looked like nails. But these dropped from their hand and their armour was shattered. Their inner organs were mangled.

पैदल सैनिकों के पास कीलों जैसी दिखने वाली तलवारें थीं। परन्तु ये उनके हाथ से गिर गये और उनका कवच टूट गया। उनके आंतरिक अंग क्षत-विक्षत थे।

तैर्हतैर्हन्यमानैश्च पतद्भिः पतितैरपि भ्रमद्भिर्निष्टनद्भिश्च घोरमायोधनं बभौ

They were killed and whirled around. They fell and were falling down. Because of this, the field of battle looked terrible.

उन्हें मार डाला गया और इधर-उधर घुमाया गया। वे गिरते-गिरते बचे। इस कारण युद्ध का मैदान भयानक लगने लगा।

रजश्च महदुद्भूतं शान्तं रुधिरवृष्टिभिः मही चाप्यभवद्दुर्गा कबन्धशतसंकुला

A great cloud of dust had arisen and was now pacified by the shower of blood. Strewn with many headless torsos, the ground became difficult to cross.

धूल का एक बड़ा बादल उठ गया था और अब खून की बौछार से शांत हो गया था। कई सिर विहीन धड़ों से भरी ज़मीन को पार करना मुश्किल हो गया।

तद्बभौ रौद्रबीभत्सं बीभत्सोर्यानमाहवे आक्रीड इव रुद्रस्य घ्नतः कालात्यये पशून्

In that battle, Bībhatsu's chariot was fierce and radiant. He sported around like Rudra, slaughtering animals at the time of destruction.

उस युद्ध में बिभात्सु का रथ भयंकर और तेजस्वी था। वह विनाश के समय रुद्र के समान पशुओं का वध करते हुए क्रीड़ा करता था।

ते वध्यमानाः पार्थेन व्याकुलाश्वरथद्विपाः तमेवाभिमुखाः क्षीणाः शक्रस्यातिथितां गताः

Killed by Pārtha, the horses, chariots and elephants became anxious. But they continued to ruṣ at him, like guests visiting Śākra.

पार्थ के मारे जाने से घोड़े, रथ और हाथी व्याकुल हो गये। लेकिन वे उस पर झपटते रहे, जैसे शक्र के पास आने वाले मेहमान।

सा भूमिर्भरतश्रेष्ठ निहतैस्तैर्महारथैः आस्तीर्णा संबभौ सर्वा प्रेतीभूतैः समन्ततः

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! The ground was strewn with many slain mahāratha-s. With all of them lying there, it looked like the world of dead spirits.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! ज़मीन कई मारे गए महारथियों से बिखरी हुई थी। उन सबके वहां पड़े होने से ऐसा लग रहा था मानो मृत आत्माओं की दुनिया हो।

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे चैव प्रमत्ते सव्यसाचिनि व्यूढानीकस्ततो द्रोणो युधिष्ठिरमुपाद्रवत्

While Savyasachi was thus furiously engaged, Droṇa and his battle formations attacked Yudhiṣṭhira.

जब सव्यसाची क्रोधपूर्वक उलझा हुआ था, द्रोण और उसकी युद्ध संरचनाओं ने युधिष्ठिर पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

तं प्रत्यगृह्णंस्त्वरिता व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः युधिष्ठिरं परीप्सन्तस्तदासीत्तुमुलं महत्

There were many armed ones in arrays and they swiftly attacked, so as to capture Yudhiṣṭhira. There was a great and tumultuous encounter.

वहाँ बहुत-से हथियारबंद लोग थे और उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर को पकड़ने के लिए तेजी से हमला किया। एक जबरदस्त और हंगामेदार मुठभेड़ हुई.
