संजय उवाच एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः सुभद्रा पुत्रशोकार्ता विललाप सुदुःखिता

Sañjaya said: On hearing these words of the great-souled Keśava, Subhadrā was extremely miserable and lamented, because of grief over her son.

संजय ने कहा: महात्मा केशव के ये वचन सुनकर सुभद्रा अपने पुत्र के दुःख के कारण अत्यंत दुखी और विलाप करने लगी।

हा पुत्र मम मन्दायाः कथं संयुगमेत्य ह निधनं प्राप्तवांस्तात पितृतुल्यपराक्रमः

"Āla-s, my son! I am unfortunate! You were equal to your father in valour. O son! Having gone forth to fight, how could you have been slain?

"अला-स, मेरे बेटे! मैं अभागा हूँ! तुम वीरता में अपने पिता के बराबर थे। हे बेटे! तुम लड़ने के लिए आगे बढ़े, तो तुम कैसे मारे गए?"

कथमिन्दीवरश्यामं सुदंष्ट्रं चारुलोचनम् मुखं ते दृश्यते वत्स गुण्ठितं रणरेणुना

Your face was as dark as a blue lotus. It possessed beautiful teeth and beautiful eyes. O son! It is now seen to be covered with the dust raised by battle.

आपका मुख नीले कमल के समान श्यामल था। इसके सुन्दर दाँत और सुन्दर आँखें थीं। हे वत्स अब यह युद्ध से उठी धूल से ढका हुआ दिखाई देता है।

नूनं शूरं निपतितं त्वां पश्यन्त्यनिवर्तिनम् सुशिरोग्रीवबाह्वंसं व्यूढोरस्कं निरूदरम्

You were brave and did not retreat from battle. You possessed an excellent head, neck and arms. Your chest was broad. Your stomach was flat.

आप वीर थे और युद्ध से पीछे नहीं हटे। आपके पास उत्कृष्ट सिर, गर्दन और भुजाएँ थीं। आपकी छाती चौड़ी थी. आपका पेट सपाट था.

चारूपचितसर्वाङ्गं स्वक्षं शस्त्रक्षताचितम् भूतानि त्वा निरीक्षन्ते नूनं चन्द्रमिवोदितम्

All your limbs were decorated with ornaments. You possessed excellent eyes. You are now mangled with wounds from weapons. On seeing you fall, there is no doubt that all the beings are glancing at you, as if at a rising moon.

आपके सभी अंग आभूषणों से सुशोभित थे। आपके पास उत्कृष्ट आँखें थीं। अब तुम शस्त्रों के घावों से क्षत-विक्षत हो गये हो। आपको गिरते हुए देखकर, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि सभी प्राणी आपकी ओर देख रहे हैं, जैसे कि उगते चंद्रमा को देख रहे हों।

शयनीयं पुरा यस्य स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृतम् भूमावद्य कथं शेषे विप्रविद्धः सुखोचितः

Earlier, your bed used to be covered with white and expensive sheets. You were used to happiness. Pierced by arrows, how can you sleep on the bare ground now?

पहले आपका बिस्तर सफेद और महंगी चादरों से ढका रहता था। तुम्हें ख़ुशी की आदत थी. बाणों से घायल होकर अब तुम नंगी भूमि पर कैसे सो सकते हो?

योऽन्वास्यत पुरा वीरो वरस्त्रीभिर्महाभुजः कथमन्वास्यते सोऽद्य शिवाभिः पतितो मृधे

The brave and mighty-armed one used to be served by supreme women earlier. How can he now have been brought down on the field of battle, served by jackals?

वह वीर और महाबाहु पहले श्रेष्ठ स्त्रियों द्वारा सेवित हुआ करते थे। अब उसे गीदड़ों की सेवा में युद्ध के मैदान में कैसे उतारा जा सकता है?

योऽस्तूयत पुरा हृष्टैः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः सोऽद्य क्रव्याद्गणैर्घोरैर्विनदद्भिरुपास्यते

Earlier, you used to be delighted by bards, raconteurs and minstrels. You are now served by masses of carnivorous and fierce creatures that are howling.

पहले, आप बार्ड, रैकोन्टूर और टकसालों से प्रसन्न होते थे। अब आपको मांसाहारी और भयंकर प्राणियों की भीड़ द्वारा परोसा जा रहा है जो चिल्ला रहे हैं।

पाण्डवेषु च नाथेषु वृष्णिवीरेषु चाभिभो पाञ्चालेषु च वीरेषु हतः केनास्यनाथवत्

O lord! You had the Pāṇḍava-s and the brave Vṛṣṇi-s as your protectors. There were also the brave Pāñcāla-s. How could you have been slain, like one without a protector?

हे भगवान! आपके रक्षक के रूप में पांडव और वीर वृष्णि थे। वहाँ वीर पंचाल भी थे। बिना रक्षक के ऐसे व्यक्ति की तरह आप कैसे मारे जा सकते हैं?

अतृप्तदर्शना पुत्र दर्शनस्य तवानघ मन्दभाग्या गमिष्यामि व्यक्तमद्य यमक्षयम्

O son! O unblemished one! I have not been satisfied from looking at you. I am wretched. It is evident that I will have to go to Yāma's eternal abode now.

हे वत्स हे निष्कलंक! मैं तुम्हें देख कर तृप्त नहीं हुआ हूं. मैं अभागा हूँ. यह स्पष्ट है कि मुझे अब यम के शाश्वत निवास में जाना होगा।

विशालाक्षं सुकेशान्तं चारुवाक्यं सुगन्धि च तव पुत्र कदा भूयो मुखं द्रक्ष्यामि निर्व्रणम्

You possessed large eyes. The tips of your hair were excellent. Your words were pleasant and fragrant. Your face was without any blemishes. O son! When will I see it again?

आपकी बड़ी-बड़ी आँखें थीं। आपके बालों की नोकें बहुत अच्छी थीं. आपकी बातें सुखद और सुगंधित थीं. आपके चेहरे पर कोई दाग नहीं था. हे वत्स मैं इसे दोबारा कब देखूंगा?

धिग्बलं भीमसेनस्य धिक्पार्थस्य धनुष्मताम् धिग्वीर्यं वृष्णिवीराणां पाञ्चालानां च धिग्बलम्

Shame on Bhīmasena. Shame on Pārtha, supreme among archers. Shame on the valour of the brave Vṛṣṇi-s. Shame on the strength of the Pāñcāla-s.

भीमसेन को शर्म आनी चाहिए। धनुर्धरों में श्रेष्ठ पार्थ को धिक्कार है। वीर वृष्णिओं की वीरता को धिक्कार है। पंचालों की ताकत को शर्म आनी चाहिए।

धिक्केकयांस्तथा चेदीन्मत्स्यांश्चैवाथ सृञ्जयान् ये त्वा रणे गतं वीरं न जानन्ति निपातितम्

Shame on the Kekaya-s, the Cedi-s, the Mātsya-s and the Sṛñjaya-s. When you went to fight, they did not know how to prevent the fall of the brave one.

केकय-स, सेडी-एस, मत्स्य-एस और सृंजय-एस को शर्म आनी चाहिए। जब आप युद्ध करने गये तो उन्हें यह नहीं मालूम था कि वीर का पतन कैसे रोका जाय।

अद्य पश्यामि पृथिवीं शून्यामिव हतत्विषम् अभिमन्युमपश्यन्ती शोकव्याकुललोचना

Today, I see the earth to be empty, bereft of its beauty. Without being able to see Abhimanyu, my eyes are full of sorrow.

आज मैं पृथ्वी को अपनी सुन्दरता से रहित, सूना-सूना देखता हूँ। अभिमन्यु को देखे बिना मेरी आँखें दुःख से भरी हैं।

स्वस्रीयं वासुदेवस्य पुत्रं गाण्डीवधन्वनः कथं त्वा विरथं वीरं द्रक्ष्याम्यन्यैर्निपातितम्

You were the son of Vāsudeva's sister and that of the wielder of Gāṇḍīva. O brave one! How can I see you bereft of your chariot, and brought down by others?

आप वासुदेव की बहन के पुत्र और गाण्डीव के क्षेत्ररक्षक थे। हे वीर! मैं तुम्हें अपने रथ से वंचित और दूसरों द्वारा गिराये हुए कैसे देख सकता हूँ?

हा वीर दृष्टो नष्टश्च धनं स्वप्न इवासि मे अहो ह्यनित्यं मानुष्यं जलबुद्बुदचञ्चलम्

Āla-s, brave one! You are like riches seen in a dream, which have been destroyed now. Man is transient, as temporary as a bubble in water.

आला-एस, बहादुर! तुम स्वप्न में देखे हुए धन के समान हो, जो अब नष्ट हो गया है। मनुष्य क्षणभंगुर है, पानी के बुलबुले की तरह अस्थायी है।

इमां ते तरुणीं भार्यां त्वदाधिभिरभिप्लुताम् कथं संधारयिष्यामि विवत्सामिव धेनुकाम्

This is your young wife. She is overcome with grief on your account. How will I comfort her? I am myself like a cow that has lost her calf.

यह आपकी युवा पत्नी है. वह आपके कारण दुःख से उबर गई है। मैं उसे कैसे सांत्वना दूँगा? मैं स्वयं उस गाय के समान हूं जिसने अपना बछड़ा खो दिया है।

अहो ह्यकाले प्रस्थानं कृतवानसि पुत्रक विहाय फलकाले मां सुगृद्धां तव दर्शने

O son! You have left me at a wrong time, when you were about to accomplish great things. You have departed without reaping the fruits. I am yearning to see you.

हे वत्स तुमने मुझे गलत समय पर छोड़ दिया, जब तुम महान कार्य करने वाले थे। तुम फल भोगे बिना ही चले गये। मैं तुम्हें देखने के लिए तरस रहा हूँ.

नूनं गतिः कृतान्तस्य प्राज्ञैरपि सुदुर्विदा यत्र त्वं केशवे नाथे संग्रामेऽनाथवद्धतः

There is no doubt that the ways of destiny are extremely difficult to fathom, even by those who are wise. You had Keśava as your protector. But in the battle, you were like one without a protector.

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि नियति के तरीकों को समझना अत्यंत कठिन है, यहाँ तक कि बुद्धिमान लोगों के लिए भी। आपके रक्षक के रूप में केशव थे। परन्तु युद्ध में तुम ऐसे थे जैसे कोई रक्षक न हो।

यज्वनां दानशीलानां ब्राह्मणानां कृतात्मनाम् चरितब्रह्मचर्याणां पुण्यतीर्थावगाहिनाम्

There are those who perform sacrifices, donate and are of good conduct. There are brāhmana-s who control their souls. There are those who follow brahmacarya and bathe in sacred places of pilgrimage.

ऐसे लोग हैं जो यज्ञ करते हैं, दान करते हैं और अच्छे आचरण वाले हैं। ऐसे ब्राह्मण हैं जो अपनी आत्मा को नियंत्रित करते हैं। ऐसे लोग हैं जो ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करते हैं और पवित्र तीर्थ स्थानों में स्नान करते हैं।

कृतज्ञानां वदान्यानां गुरुशुश्रूषिणामपि सहस्रदक्षिणानां च या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि

There are those who are grateful and generous.There are those who serve their preceptors. There are those who give a thousand dakṣiṇa-s. All these attain their ends.

ऐसे लोग हैं जो आभारी और उदार हैं। ऐसे लोग हैं जो अपने गुरुओं की सेवा करते हैं। ऐसे लोग हैं जो एक हजार दक्षिणाएँ देते हैं । ये सभी अपने लक्ष्य को प्राप्त करते हैं।

या गतिर्युध्यमानानां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् हत्वारीन्निहतानां च संग्रामे तां गतिं व्रज

These ends are obtained by brave ones who fight without retreating. These ends are obtained by brave ones who are slain on the field of battle. May you attain those ends.

ये लक्ष्य उन बहादुरों को मिलते हैं जो बिना पीछे हटे लड़ते हैं। ये लक्ष्य युद्ध के मैदान में मारे गये वीरों को प्राप्त होते हैं। क्या आप उन लक्ष्यों को प्राप्त कर सकते हैं?

गोसहस्रप्रदातॄणां क्रतुदानां च या गतिः नैवेशिकं चाभिमतं ददतां या गतिः शुभा

There are ends obtained by those who donate a thousand cows or perform sacrifices with donations. There are ends for those who give away acceptable houses as gifts. May those ends be yours.

जो मनुष्य एक हजार गौओं का दान करते हैं अथवा दान सहित यज्ञ करते हैं, उन्हें मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है। उन लोगों के लिए अंत हैं जो उपहार के रूप में स्वीकार्य मकान देते हैं। वे सिरे आपके हों।

ब्रह्मचर्येण यां यान्ति मुनयः संशितव्रताः एकपत्न्यश्च यां यान्ति तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

Sages, rigid in their vows, attain ends through brahmacarya. There are ends for women with a single husband. O son! Go to those ends.

अपने व्रतों में दृढ़ रहने वाले साधु ब्रह्मचर्य के माध्यम से लक्ष्य प्राप्त करते हैं। एकल पति वाली महिलाओं के लिए कुछ न कुछ अंत होता है। हे वत्स उन छोरों तक जाओ.

राज्ञां सुचरितैर्या च गतिर्भवति शाश्वती चतुराश्रमिणां पुण्यैः पावितानां सुरक्षितैः

Kings with good conduct attain eternal ends and those who purify and protect themselves and follow the four sacred āśrama-s in due order.

अच्छे आचरण वाले राजा शाश्वत अंत प्राप्त करते हैं और जो स्वयं को शुद्ध करते हैं और रक्षा करते हैं और उचित क्रम में चार पवित्र आश्रमों का पालन करते हैं।

दीनानुकम्पिनां या च सततं संविभागिनाम् पैशुन्याच्च निवृत्तानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

There are those who are always compassionate towards the miserable and divide everything equally. They refrain from wicked tendencies. O son! May you attain those ends.

ऐसे लोग हैं जो हमेशा दुखी लोगों के प्रति दयालु होते हैं और हर चीज को समान रूप से बांटते हैं। वे दुष्ट प्रवृत्तियों से दूर रहते हैं। हे वत्स क्या आप उन लक्ष्यों को प्राप्त कर सकते हैं?

व्रतिनां धर्मशीलानां गुरुशुश्रूषिणामपि अमोघातिथिनां या च तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

There are those who follow good conduct and observe dharma. There are those who serve their seniors and do not leave their guests dissatisfied. O son! May you go to those ends.

ऐसे लोग हैं जो अच्छे आचरण का पालन करते हैं और धर्म का पालन करते हैं। ऐसे लोग होते हैं जो अपने वरिष्ठों की सेवा करते हैं और अपने मेहमानों को असंतुष्ट नहीं छोड़ते। हे वत्स क्या आप उन छोरों तक जा सकते हैं.

ऋतुकाले स्वकां पत्नीं गच्छतां या मनस्विनाम् न चान्यदारसेवीनां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

Intelligent ones have intercourse with their own wives at the right season. They do not serve the wives of others. O son! May you go to those ends.

बुद्धिमान लोग उचित समय पर अपनी पत्नी के साथ संभोग करते हैं। वे दूसरों की पत्नियों की सेवा नहीं करते. हे वत्स क्या आप उन छोरों तक जा सकते हैं.

साम्ना ये सर्वभूतानि गच्छन्ति गतमत्सराः नारुंतुदानां क्षमिणां या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि

There are those who look on all beings peacefully. They are devoid of malice and attain ends. There are those who do not cause injury and forgive. They attain ends.

ऐसे लोग हैं जो सभी प्राणियों को शांति से देखते हैं। वे द्वेष से रहित तथा साध्य को प्राप्त करने वाले होते हैं। ऐसे लोग होते हैं जो चोट नहीं पहुंचाते और माफ कर देते हैं। उन्हें साध्य की प्राप्ति होती है.

मधुमांसनिवृत्तानां मदाद्दम्भात्तथानृतात् परोपतापत्यक्तानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

There are those who abstain from liquor, meat, vanity and falsehood and those who do not cause pain to others. O son! May you attain those ends.

ऐसे लोग हैं जो शराब, मांस, घमंड और झूठ से दूर रहते हैं और जो दूसरों को पीड़ा नहीं पहुंचाते हैं। हे वत्स क्या आप उन लक्ष्यों को प्राप्त कर सकते हैं?

ह्रीमन्तः सर्वशास्त्रज्ञा ज्ञानतृप्ता जितेन्द्रियाः यां गतिं साधवो यान्ति तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

There are those who are modest and learned in all the sacred texts. They are satisfied and have controlled their senses. There are ends obtained by those who are righteous. O son! May you attain those ends."

ऐसे लोग हैं जो विनम्र हैं और सभी पवित्र ग्रंथों के विद्वान हैं। वे संतुष्ट हैं और उन्होंने अपनी इंद्रियों को वश में कर लिया है। जो लोग धर्मात्मा हैं उन्हें अंत प्राप्त होता है। हे वत्स क्या आप उन लक्ष्यों को प्राप्त कर सकते हैं।"

एवं विलपतीं दीनां सुभद्रां शोककर्शिताम् अभ्यपद्यत पाञ्चाली वैराटीसहिता तदा

Distressed and overcome by sorrow, Subhadrā lamented in this way. At this time, Pāñcālī and Virāṭa's daughter arrived there.

सुभद्रा ने दुःख से दुःखी होकर इस प्रकार विलाप किया। इसी समय पांचाली और विराट की पुत्री वहां पहुंचीं।

ताः प्रकामं रुदित्वा च विलप्य च सुदुःखिताः उन्मत्तवत्तदा राजन्विसंज्ञा न्यपतन्क्षितौ

They wept a lot and lamented in great misery. O king! They were mad with grief and fell down on the ground, bereft of their senses.

वे बहुत रोये और बड़े दुःख से विलाप किया। हे राजा! वे शोक से उन्मत्त हो गये और अपनी सुध-बुध खोकर भूमि पर गिर पड़े।

सोपचारस्तु कृष्णस्तां दुःखितां भृशदुःखितः सिक्त्वाम्भसा समाश्वास्य तत्तदुक्त्वा हितं वचः

Kṛṣṇā was himself extremely miserable. But he sprinkled water on them and spoke these beneficial words,

कृष्ण स्वयं अत्यंत दुखी थे। परन्तु उस ने उन पर जल छिड़का, और ये हितकारी बातें कहीं।

विसंज्ञकल्पां रुदतीमपविद्धां प्रवेपतीम् भगिनीं पुण्डरीकाक्ष इदं वचनमब्रवीत्

when they had regained their senses, but were still lamenting and weeping. Puṇḍarīkākṣa spoke these words to his sister.

जब उन्हें होश आया, तो वे अब भी विलाप और रो रहे थे। ये शब्द पुण्डरीकाक्ष ने अपनी बहन से कहे।

सुभद्रे मा शुचः पुत्रं पाञ्चाल्याश्वासयोत्तराम् गतोऽभिमन्युः प्रथितां गतिं क्षत्रियपुंगवः

"O Subhadrā! Do not sorrow. O Pāñcālī! Comfort Uttarā. Abhimanyu, bull among the kṣatriya-s, has attained an objective that is extremely desired.

"हे सुभद्रा! दुःख मत करो। हे पांचाली! सांत्वना उत्तरा। अभिमन्यु, क्षत्रियों में बैल, ने एक ऐसा उद्देश्य प्राप्त कर लिया है जो अत्यंत वांछित है।

ये चान्येऽपि कुले सन्ति पुरुषा नो वरानने सर्वे ते वै गतिं यान्तु अभिमन्योर्यशस्विनः

O ones with beautiful faces! Let other virtuous ones from our lineage also attain that. All of us will go to the end that the illustrious Abhimanyu has achieved.

हे सुन्दर मुख वाले! हमारे वंश के अन्य पुण्यात्माओं को भी वह प्राप्त हो। हम सभी उस लक्ष्य तक जाएंगे जिसे यशस्वी अभिमन्यु ने हासिल किया है।

कुर्याम तद्वयं कर्म क्रियासुः सुहृदश्च नः कृतवान्यादृगद्यैकस्तव पुत्रो महारथः

All of us, with all our well-wishers, wish to accomplish the kind of deed that he has achieved. Your son, the mahāratha, has accomplished this alone."

उन्होंने जो कार्य किया है, उस प्रकार का कार्य हम सभी अपने शुभचिंतकों के साथ मिलकर करना चाहते हैं। आपके पुत्र, महारथी, ने अकेले ही इसे पूरा किया है।"

एवमाश्वास्य भगिनीं द्रौपदीमपि चोत्तराम् पार्थस्यैव महाबाहुः पार्श्वमागादरिंदमः

Having comforted his sister, Draupadī and Uttarā in this way, the mighty-armed scorcher of enemies returned to Pārtha's side.

इस प्रकार अपनी बहन द्रौपदी और उत्तरा को सांत्वना देकर शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाला महाबाहु राजा पार्थ के पक्ष में लौट आया।

ततोऽभ्यनुज्ञाय नृपान्कृष्णो बन्धूंस्तथाभिभूः विवेशान्तःपुरं राजंस्तेऽन्ये जग्मुर्यथालयम्

O king! Kṛṣṇā and the lord took the permission of the kings and the relatives and retired to their inner quarters. The others also went to their own abodes.

हे राजा! कृष्ण और भगवान ने राजाओं और रिश्तेदारों की अनुमति ली और अपने आंतरिक कक्षों में चले गए। अन्य लोग भी अपने-अपने निवास स्थान को चले गये।
