धृतराष्ट्र उवाच बालमत्यन्तसुखिनमवार्यबलदर्पितम् युद्धेषु कुशलं वीरं कुलपुत्रं तनुत्यजम्

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: He was a mere child, reared in great happiness. He was noble and proud because of his strength. He was skilled in battle. He was brave. He was born in a noble lineage. He was ready to give up his own life.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: वह एक साधारण बच्चा था, जिसे बहुत खुशी से पाला गया था। वह अपनी ताकत के कारण महान और गौरवान्वित था। वह युद्ध में कुशल था। वह बहादुर था. उनका जन्म एक कुलीन वंश में हुआ था। वह अपनी जान तक देने को तैयार था.

गाहमानमनीकानि सदश्वैस्तं त्रिहायनैः अपि यौधिष्ठिरात्सैन्यात्कश्चिदन्वपतद्रथी

He immersed himself in that army, borne by well-trained horses that were three years old. Was there any rāṭha in Yudhiṣṭhira's army who followed him?

उसने खुद को उस सेना में शामिल कर लिया, जो तीन साल के अच्छी तरह से प्रशिक्षित घोड़ों पर सवार थी। क्या युधिष्ठिर की सेना में कोई रथ था जो उनका अनुसरण करता था?

संजय उवाच युधिष्ठिरो भीमसेनः शिखण्डी सात्यकिर्यमौ धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च सकेकयः धृष्टकेतुश्च संरब्धो मत्स्याश्चान्वपतन्रणे

Sañjaya replied: Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena, Śikhaṇḍī, Sātyaki, the twins, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa, Drupada and the Kekaya-s, Dhṛṣṭaketu and the Mātsya-s angrily advanced in that battle.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: युधिष्ठिर, भीमसेन, शिखंडी, सात्यकि, जुड़वां, धृष्टद्युम्न, विराट, द्रुपद और केकय, धृष्टकेतु और मत्स्य-एस उस युद्ध में गुस्से से आगे बढ़े।

अभ्यद्रवन्परीप्सन्तो व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रवतः शूरांस्त्वदीया विमुखाभवन्

Those armed ones, arranged in battle formation, sought to protect him. On seeing those brave ones advance, all those on your side retreated.

उन सशस्त्र लोगों ने, युद्ध की व्यवस्था में व्यवस्थित होकर, उसकी रक्षा करने की कोशिश की। उन वीरों को आगे बढ़ता देख आपके पक्ष के सभी लोग पीछे हट गये।

ततस्तद्विमुखं दृष्ट्वा तव सूनोर्महद्बलम् जामाता तव तेजस्वी विष्टम्भयिषुराद्रवत्

On seeing that the extremely large army of your son was retreating, your energetic son-in-law sought to restrain them.

यह देखकर कि आपके पुत्र की अत्यंत विशाल सेना पीछे हट रही है, आपके ऊर्जावान दामाद ने उन्हें रोकने का प्रयास किया।

सैन्धवस्य महाराज पुत्रो राजा जयद्रथः स पुत्रगृद्धिनः पार्थान्सहसैन्यानवारयत्

O great king! Jayadratha, the son of the king of Sindhu, repulsed the Pārtha-s, together with their soldiers, when they sought to protect their son.

हे महान राजा! सिन्धु के राजा के पुत्र जयद्रथ ने पार्थों को उनके सैनिकों सहित खदेड़ दिया, जब वे अपने पुत्र की रक्षा करना चाह रहे थे।

उग्रधन्वा महेष्वासो दिव्यमस्त्रमुदीरयन् वार्धक्षत्रिरुपासेधत्प्रवणादिव कुञ्जरान्

That fierce and great archer, the son of Vṛddhakṣatra, invoked his divine weapons, like an elephant sporting on a sloping ground.

वृद्धक्षत्र के पुत्र, उस भयंकर और महान धनुर्धर ने अपने दिव्य हथियारों का आह्वान किया, जैसे कि एक हाथी ढलान वाली जमीन पर खेल रहा हो।

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच अतिभारमहं मन्ये सैन्धवे संजयाहितम् यदेकः पाण्डवान्क्रुद्धान्पुत्रगृद्धीनवारयत्

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya! I think that an extremely heavy burden was placed on Saindhava, since he had to single-handedly repulse the enraged Pāṇḍava-s who desired to protect their son.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: हे संजय! मुझे लगता है कि सैंधव पर बहुत भारी बोझ डाला गया था, क्योंकि उन्हें अकेले ही क्रोधित पांडवों को खदेड़ना था जो अपने बेटे की रक्षा करना चाहते थे।

अत्यद्भुतमिदं मन्ये बलं शौर्यं च सैन्धवे तदस्य ब्रूहि मे वीर्यं कर्म चाग्र्यं महात्मनः

I think that Saindhava's strength and valour were extremely wonderful. Tell me about the valour and extreme deeds of the great-souled one.

मैं सोचता हूं कि सैन्धव का बल और पराक्रम अत्यंत अद्भुत था। उस महात्मा की वीरता तथा चरम कार्यों के बारे में मुझे बताइये।

किं दत्तं हुतमिष्टं वा सुतप्तमथ वा तपः सिन्धुराजेन येनैकः क्रुद्धान्पार्थानवारयत्

O sūta! What donations did he make? What oblations did he offer? What austerities did he torment himself with? How could the king of Sindhu counter the enraged Pārtha-s single-handed?

हे सुता! उन्होंने क्या दान किया? उसने क्या-क्या आहुतियाँ दीं? उन्होंने स्वयं को कौन सी तपस्या से कष्ट दिया? सिन्धुराज क्रोधित पार्थ का मुकाबला अकेले कैसे कर सकते थे?

संजय उवाच द्रौपदीहरणे यत्तद्भीमसेनेन निर्जितः मानात्स तप्तवान्राजा वरार्थी सुमहत्तपः

Sañjaya replied: At the time of Draupadī's abduction, he was vanquished by Bhīmasena. The king was tormented by his dishonour and desiring a boon, performed extremely great austerities.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: द्रौपदी के अपहरण के समय, वह भीमसेन द्वारा परास्त किया गया था। राजा अपने अपमान से बहुत दुखी हुए और वरदान की इच्छा से उन्होंने अत्यंत घोर तपस्या की।

इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यः प्रियेभ्यः संनिवर्त्य सः क्षुत्पिपासातपसहः कृशो धमनिसंततः देवमाराधयच्छर्वं गृणन्ब्रह्म सनातनम्

He withdrew his sensual organs from all objects that brought them pleasure. He bore hunger, thirst and heat and became so thin that he seemed to be made out of veins. He chanted the name of the eternal brāhman and worshipped the god Śarva.

उन्होंने अपनी इंद्रियों को उन सभी वस्तुओं से हटा लिया जिनसे उन्हें आनंद मिलता था। वह भूख, प्यास और गर्मी सहता रहा और इतना पतला हो गया कि ऐसा लगता था जैसे वह नसों से बना हो। उन्होंने सनातन ब्राह्मण के नाम का जाप किया और भगवान शर्व की पूजा की।

भक्तानुकम्पी भगवांस्तस्य चक्रे ततो दयाम् स्वप्नान्तेऽप्यथ चैवाह हरः सिन्धुपतेः सुतम् वरं वृणीष्व प्रीतोऽस्मि जयद्रथ किमिच्छसि

The illustrious one, compassionate towards devotees, became merciful towards him. In a dream, Hara revealed himself to the son of the lord of Sindhu and said, "O Jayadratha! I am pleased with you. Ask for a boon. What do you desire?"

भक्तों के प्रति दयालु वह महामहिम उनके प्रति दयालु हो गये। एक सपने में, हर ने खुद को सिंधु के राजा के पुत्र के सामने प्रकट किया और कहा, "हे जयद्रथ! मैं तुमसे प्रसन्न हूं। एक वरदान मांगो। तुम्हें क्या चाहिए?"

एवमुक्तस्तु शर्वेण सिन्धुराजो जयद्रथः उवाच प्रणतो रुद्रं प्राञ्जलिर्नियतात्मवान्

Thus addressed by Śarva, Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu, joined his hands in salutation, controlled his soul, bowed in obeisance before Rudra and replied,

सर्वा द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, सिंधु के राजा जयद्रथ ने अभिवादन में अपने हाथ जोड़े, अपनी आत्मा को नियंत्रित किया, रुद्र के सामने झुककर उत्तर दिया,

पाण्डवेयानहं संख्ये भीमवीर्यपराक्रमान् एको रणे धारयेयं समस्तानिति भारत

"The Pāṇḍaveya-s are terrible in battle because of their valour and prowess. I wish that I may alone be able to counter them in battle." O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! This is what he asked for.

"अपनी वीरता और कौशल के कारण युद्ध में पांडव भयानक होते हैं। मैं चाहता हूं कि मैं अकेले ही युद्ध में उनका मुकाबला करने में सक्षम हो सकूं।" हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यही तो उसने माँगा था।

एवमुक्तस्तु देवेशो जयद्रथमथाब्रवीत् ददामि ते वरं सौम्य विना पार्थं धनंजयम्

Thus addressed, the lord of the gods spoke to Jayadratha in these words. "O amiable one! I will grant you the boon, but with the exception of Pārtha Dhanañjayā.

इस प्रकार संबोधित करते हुए, देवताओं के स्वामी ने जयद्रथ से इन शब्दों में बात की। "हे मिलनसार! मैं तुम्हें वरदान दूंगा, लेकिन पार्थ धनंजय को छोड़कर।

धारयिष्यसि संग्रामे चतुरः पाण्डुनन्दनान् एवमस्त्विति देवेशमुक्त्वाबुध्यत पार्थिवः

In a battle, you will be able to withstand the other four sons of Pāṇḍu." The king agreed to these words of the lord of the gods and awoke from his sleep.

युद्ध में, आप पांडु के अन्य चार पुत्रों का सामना करने में सक्षम होंगे।" राजा देवताओं के भगवान के इन शब्दों से सहमत हुए और अपनी नींद से जाग गए।

स तेन वरदानेन दिव्येनास्त्रबलेन च एकः संधारयामास पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम्

It is because of the boon that he obtained as a gift and because of the strength of his divine weapons, that he was able to repulse the army of the Pāṇḍava-s single-handed.

यह उपहार के रूप में प्राप्त वरदान के कारण और अपने दिव्य हथियारों की ताकत के कारण था, कि वह अकेले ही पांडवों की सेना को खदेड़ने में सक्षम था।

तस्य ज्यातलघोषेण क्षत्रियान्भयमाविशत् परांस्तु तव सैन्यस्य हर्षः परमकोऽभवत्

The twang of his bowstring and the slap of his palms overwhelmed the enemy kṣatriya-s with fear and also caused supreme delight among your soldiers.

उनके धनुष की प्रत्यंचा की टंकार और हथेलियों की थाप से शत्रु क्षत्रिय भय से अभिभूत हो गये और आपके सैनिकों में अत्यधिक प्रसन्नता भी हुई।

दृष्ट्वा तु क्षत्रिया भारं सैन्धवे सर्वमर्पितम् उत्क्रुश्याभ्यद्रवन्राजन्येन यौधिष्ठिरं बलम्

O king! The kṣatriya-s saw that Saindhava took up the entire burden and roared and rushed to the spot where Yudhiṣṭhira's army was.

हे राजा! क्षत्रियों ने देखा कि सैन्धवों ने सारा बोझ उठा लिया और गर्जना करते हुए उस स्थान पर पहुंचे जहां युधिष्ठिर की सेना थी।
