संजय उवाच वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे घोररूपे भयावहे तमसा संवृते लोके रजसा च महीपते नापश्यन्त रणे योधाः परस्परमवस्थिताः

Sañjaya said: The terrible and fierce battle continued. O lord of the earth! The world was covered in darkness and dust. As they were stationed in that encounter, the warriors could not see each other.

संजय ने कहा: भयानक और भयंकर युद्ध जारी रहा। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! संसार अंधकार और धूल से ढका हुआ था। चूँकि वे उस मुठभेड़ में तैनात थे, योद्धा एक-दूसरे को नहीं देख सकते थे।

अनुमानेन संज्ञाभिर्युद्धं तद्ववृते महत् नरनागाश्वमथनं परमं लोमहर्षणम्

The great battle continued on the basis of guessing and signs. Men, elephants and horses encountered supreme destruction and it made the body hair stand up.

अनुमान और संकेतों के आधार पर महासंग्राम चलता रहा। मनुष्यों, हाथियों और घोड़ों को सर्वोच्च विनाश का सामना करना पड़ा और इससे शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गये।

द्रोणकर्णकृपा वीरा भीमपार्षतसात्यकाः अन्योन्यं क्षोभयामासुः सैन्यानि नृपसत्तम

O supreme among kings! The brave Droṇa, Karṇa and Kṛpa and Bhīmā, Pārṣata and Sātyaki, agitated each other's soldiers.

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! वीर द्रोण, कर्ण और कृप तथा भीम, परषत और सात्यकि ने एक-दूसरे के सैनिकों को उत्तेजित कर दिया।

वध्यमानानि सैन्यानि समन्तात्तैर्महारथैः तमसा रजसा चैव समन्ताद्विप्रदुद्रुवुः

In every direction, the mahāratha-s slaughtered the soldiers. Because of the darkness and the dust, the elephants fled in different directions.

हर दिशा में, महारथियों ने सैनिकों को मार डाला। अंधेरे और धूल के कारण हाथी अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भाग गये।

ते सर्वतो विद्रवन्तो योधा वित्रस्तचेतसः अहन्यन्त महाराज धावमानाश्च संयुगे

The warriors were terrified and bereft of their senses. They also fled in different directions. O great king! They were killed and fled in that encounter.

योद्धा भयभीत थे और अपनी सुधबुध खो बैठे थे। वे भी अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भाग गये। हे महान राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में वे मारे गये और भाग गये।

महारथसहस्राणि जघ्नुरन्योन्यमाहवे अन्धे तमसि मूढानि पुत्रस्य तव मन्त्रिते

Thousands of mahāratha-s killed each other in that battle. They were blind and confounded by the darkness and this was due to your stupid son's policy.

उस युद्ध में हजारों महारथियों ने एक-दूसरे को मार डाला। वे अंधे थे और अँधेरे से भ्रमित थे और यह आपके मूर्ख पुत्र की नीति के कारण था।

ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि सेनागोपाश्च भारत व्यमुह्यन्त रणे तत्र तमसा संवृते सति

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the soldiers, and the protectors of the soldiers, were confused in that battle. Everything was covered in darkness.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस युद्ध में सभी सैनिक और सैनिकों के रक्षक भ्रमित हो गये। सब कुछ अंधकार में डूबा हुआ था.

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच तेषां संलोड्यमानानां पाण्डवैर्निहतौजसाम् अन्धे तमसि मग्नानामासीत्का वो मतिस्तदा

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: They were agitated by the Pāṇḍava-s and their energy was sapped. Those on my side were blinded and shattered by the darkness.

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: वे पांडवों से उत्तेजित थे और उनकी ऊर्जा नष्ट हो गई थी। मेरी तरफ के लोग अंधेरे से अंधे और चकनाचूर हो गए थे।

कथं प्रकाशस्तेषां वा मम सैन्येषु वा पुनः बभूव लोके तमसा तथा संजय संवृते

What was the state of your minds then? O Sañjaya! When the world was covered in darkness, how did their soldiers and those on my side again become visible?

तब आपके मन की स्थिति क्या थी? हे संजय! जब संसार अँधेरे में डूबा हुआ था, तो उनके सैनिक और मेरी तरफ के लोग फिर से कैसे दिखाई देने लगे?

संजय उवाच ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि हतशिष्टानि यानि वै सेनागोप्तॄनथादिश्य पुनर्व्यूहमकल्पयत्

Sañjaya replied: There were soldiers who had not been killed. Instructed by their leaders, they again arranged themselves in the form of a vyūha.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: ऐसे सैनिक थे जो मारे नहीं गए थे। अपने नेताओं के निर्देश पर, उन्होंने फिर से खुद को एक व्यूह के रूप में व्यवस्थित किया।

द्रोणः पुरस्ताज्जघने तु शल्य;स्तथा द्रौणिः पार्श्वतः सौबलश्च स्वयं तु सर्वाणि बलानि राज;न्राजाभ्ययाद्गोपयन्वै निशायाम्

Droṇa was in the front and Śalya at the rear. O king! Droṇa and Saubala were along the flanks. During that night, the king himself protected all the soldiers.

द्रोण आगे थे और शल्य पीछे। हे राजा! द्रोण और सौबाला पार्श्व में थे। उस रात राजा ने स्वयं सभी सैनिकों की रक्षा की।

उवाच सर्वांश्च पदातिसंघा;न्दुर्योधनः पार्थिव सान्त्वपूर्वम् उत्सृज्य सर्वे परमायुधानि; गृह्णीत हस्तैर्ज्वलितान्प्रदीपान्

O king! Duryodhana spoke to the large numbers of infantry and comforted them. "Abandon your supreme weapons. Take up flaming lamps in your hands."

हे राजा! दुर्योधन ने बड़ी संख्या में पैदल सैनिकों से बात की और उन्हें सांत्वना दी। "अपने सर्वोच्च हथियारों का त्याग करें। अपने हाथों में जलते हुए दीपक लें।"

ते चोदिताः पार्थिवसत्तमेन; ततः प्रहृष्टा जगृहुः प्रदीपान् सा भूय एव ध्वजिनी विभक्ता; व्यरोचताग्निप्रभया निशायाम्

Thus instructed by the supreme of kings, they were cheered and took up lamps. Divided through different standards, during that night, the army was beautiful because of the radiance of the fire.

राजाओं के सर्वोच्च द्वारा इस प्रकार निर्देश दिए जाने पर, वे प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने दीपक उठा लिए। भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार से विभाजित उस रात्रि में अग्नि के तेज से सेना शोभायमान हो रही थी।

महाधनैराभरणैश्च दिव्यैः; शस्त्रैः प्रदीप्तैरभिसंपतद्भिः क्षणेन सर्वे विहिताः प्रदीपा; व्यदीपयंश्च ध्वजिनीं तदाशु

They were adorned in extremely expensive ornaments. They possessed divine weapons. These blazed as they were hurled.

वे अत्यंत बहुमूल्य आभूषणों से सुसज्जित थे। उनके पास दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्र थे। फेंके जाने पर ये भड़क उठे।

सर्वास्तु सेना व्यतिसेव्यमानाः; पदातिभिः पावकतैलहस्तैः प्रकाश्यमाना ददृशुर्निशायां; यथान्तरिक्षे जलदास्तडिद्भिः

In a short while, properly arranged, those lamps lit up the entire army. The foot soldiers held lamps with oil in their hands and this made all the soldiers look radiant. They looked like clouds in the night sky, illuminated by lightning.

कुछ ही देर में व्यवस्थित ढंग से सजाये गये उन दीपकों से सारी सेना जगमगा उठी। पैदल सैनिकों के हाथों में तेल के दीपक थे और इससे सभी सैनिक दीप्तिमान दिख रहे थे। वे रात के आकाश में बिजली से प्रकाशित बादलों की तरह दिखते थे।

प्रकाशितायां तु तथा ध्वजिन्यां; द्रोणोऽग्निकल्पः प्रतपन्समन्तात् रराज राजेन्द्र सुवर्णवर्मा; मध्यं गतः सूर्य इवांशुमाली

When the soldiers were illuminated in this way, Droṇa, who was like the fire, scorched all the directions. O Indra among kings! In his golden armour, he was like the midday sun with its rays.

जब सैनिकों को इस प्रकार प्रकाशित किया गया, तो आग के समान द्रोण ने सभी दिशाओं को झुलसा दिया। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! अपने सुनहरे कवच में, वह अपनी किरणों के साथ दोपहर के सूरज की तरह लग रहा था।

जाम्बूनदेष्वाभरणेषु चैव; निष्केषु शुद्धेषु शरावरेषु पीतेषु शस्त्रेषु च पावकस्य; प्रतिप्रभास्तत्र ततो बभूवुः

As the light was reflected from golden ornaments, sparkling swords and bows and yellow weapons, it was beautiful.

चूँकि सुनहरे आभूषणों, चमचमाती तलवारों और धनुषों और पीले हथियारों से प्रकाश प्रतिबिंबित हो रहा था, यह सुंदर था।

गदाश्च शैक्याः परिघाश्च शुभ्रा; रथेषु शक्त्यश्च विवर्तमानाः प्रतिप्रभा रश्मिभिराजमीढ; पुनः पुनः संजनयन्ति दीप्ताः

There were bright clubs and dazzling bludgeons. There were lances and spears. O Ājamīḍha! As they were repeatedly lit, the rays of the lamps reflected from these.

वहाँ चमकीले क्लब और चमकदार बुलड्जन थे। वहाँ भाले और भाले थे। हे अजमीढ! बार-बार जलाए जाने से दीपकों की किरणें इनमें से परावर्तित होती थीं।

छत्राणि बालव्यजनानुषङ्गा; दीप्ता महोल्काश्च तथैव राजन् व्याघूर्णमानाश्च सुवर्णमाला; व्यायच्छतां तत्र तदा विरेजुः

O king! There were umbrellas, new whisks and other accompaniments and they flamed like giant meteors. There were golden garlands that were whirled around.

हे राजा! वहाँ छतरियाँ, नई मूंछें और अन्य सहायक उपकरण थे और वे विशाल उल्काओं की तरह चमक रहे थे। चारों ओर सोने की मालाएँ घूम रही थीं।

शस्त्रप्रभाभिश्च विराजमानं; दीपप्रभाभिश्च तदा बलं तत् प्रकाशितं चाभरणप्रभाभि;र्भृशं प्रकाशं नृपते बभूव

They looked brilliant. Because of the reflection from the weapons and the illumination from the lamps, your army then looked dazzling. O king! There was the radiance from the reflection on ornaments and it was extremely beautiful.

वे शानदार लग रहे थे. उस समय अस्त्र-शस्त्रों के प्रतिबिम्ब तथा दीपकों के प्रकाश के कारण आपकी सेना चकाचौंध दिखाई देने लगी। हे राजा! आभूषणों पर प्रतिबिंब की चमक थी और वह अत्यंत सुंदर थी।

पीतानि शस्त्राण्यसृगुक्षितानि; वीरावधूतानि तनुद्रुहाणि दीप्तां प्रभां प्राजनयन्त तत्र; तपात्यये विद्युदिवान्तरिक्षे

There were yellow weapons that were well crafted, used for mangling bodies. They were whirled by the brave ones and created a flaming radiance there, like the lightning in the sky at the end of summer.

वहाँ पीले हथियार थे जो अच्छी तरह से तैयार किए गए थे, जिनका उपयोग शवों को कुचलने के लिए किया जाता था। वे वीरों द्वारा भँवर में भर दिये गये और वहाँ ग्रीष्म ऋतु के अंत में आकाश में चमकती बिजली के समान एक ज्वलंत चमक उत्पन्न कर दी।

प्रकम्पितानामभिघातवेगै;रभिघ्नतां चापततां जवेन वक्त्राण्यशोभन्त तदा नराणां; वाय्वीरितानीव महाम्बुजानि

These were brought down with great force to kill the enemy and the faces of the men trembled as they did this, like large clouds driven by the wind.

इन्हें दुश्मन को मारने के लिए बड़ी ताकत से नीचे लाया गया था और ऐसा करते समय लोगों के चेहरे हवा से चलने वाले बड़े बादलों की तरह कांप रहे थे।

महावने दाव इव प्रदीप्ते; यथा प्रभा भास्करस्यापि नश्येत् तथा तवासीद्ध्वजिनी प्रदीप्ता; महाभये भारत भीमरूपा

It was as if a raging conflagaration blazes like the sun and destroys a large forest. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The army blazed in that light and looked fierce in form, generating great fear.

यह ऐसा था मानो प्रचंड आग सूरज की तरह भड़क रही हो और एक बड़े जंगल को नष्ट कर दे। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस प्रकाश में सेना धधक रही थी और भयंकर रूप में दिख रही थी, जिससे बड़ा भय उत्पन्न हो रहा था।

तत्संप्रदीप्तं बलमस्मदीयं; निशाम्य पार्थास्त्वरितास्तथैव सर्वेषु सैन्येषु पदातिसंघा;नचोदयंस्तेऽथ चक्रुः प्रदीपान्

On seeing that our army was thus illuminated, the Pārtha-s quickly instructed all their soldiers and the large numbers of foot soldiers to also light lamps.

यह देखकर कि हमारी सेना इस प्रकार प्रकाशित हो गई है, पार्थियों ने तुरंत अपने सभी सैनिकों और बड़ी संख्या में पैदल सैनिकों को भी दीपक जलाने का निर्देश दिया।

गजे गजे सप्त कृताः प्रदीपा; रथे रथे चैव दश प्रदीपाः द्वावश्वपृष्ठे परिपार्श्वतोऽन्ये; ध्वजेषु चान्ये जघनेषु चान्ये

Seven lamps were placed on each elephant. Ten lamps were placed on each chariot. There were two lamps on the back of each horse. There were other lamps on the flanks, the standards and the rear.

प्रत्येक हाथी पर सात दीपक रखे गए। प्रत्येक रथ पर दस-दस दीपक रखे गए थे। प्रत्येक घोड़े की पीठ पर दो दीपक थे। पार्श्वों, मानकों और पीछे की ओर अन्य लैंप थे।

सेनासु सर्वासु च पार्श्वतोऽन्ये; पश्चात्पुरस्ताच्च समन्ततश्च मध्ये तथान्ये ज्वलिताग्निहस्ताः; सेनाद्वयेऽपि स्म नरा विचेरुः

There were others along the flanks of all the soldiers, at the rear and in the front, in every direction. Other men roamed around in the midst of the two armies, with flaming torches in their hands.

सभी सैनिकों के पार्श्व में, पीछे और आगे, हर दिशा में अन्य लोग भी थे। अन्य पुरुष हाथों में जलती मशालें लिये दोनों सेनाओं के बीच में घूमते रहे।

सर्वेषु सैन्येषु पदातिसंघा; व्यामिश्रिता हस्तिरथाश्ववृन्दैः मध्ये तथान्ये ज्वलिताग्निहस्ता; व्यदीपयन्पाण्डुसुतस्य सेनाम्

All the soldiers and the masses of infantry got mixed up with the elephants, the chariots and the large numbers of horses. The army of the sons of Pāṇḍu was illuminated with others who were in the midst and held flaming torches in their hands.

सभी सैनिक और पैदल सेना के लोग हाथियों, रथों और बड़ी संख्या में घोड़ों के साथ मिल गये। पांडु के पुत्रों की सेना अन्य लोगों से प्रकाशित थी जो बीच में थे और उनके हाथों में जलती हुई मशालें थीं।

तेन प्रदीप्तेन तथा प्रदीप्तं; बलं तदासीद्बलवद्बलेन भाः कुर्वता भानुमता ग्रहेण; दिवाकरेणाग्निरिवाभितप्तः

It was as if a fire was rendered more powerful because of an additional blaze and those two armies assumed greater strength. It was like the sun making the planets more radiant, or the sun fiercely illuminating the flames of a fire.

यह ऐसा था मानो अतिरिक्त ज्वाला के कारण आग अधिक शक्तिशाली हो गई हो और उन दोनों सेनाओं ने अधिक ताकत हासिल कर ली हो। यह ऐसा था जैसे सूर्य ग्रहों को अधिक उज्ज्वल बना रहा हो, या सूर्य आग की लपटों को प्रचंड रूप से प्रकाशित कर रहा हो।

तयोः प्रभाः पृथिवीमन्तरिक्षं; सर्वा व्यतिक्रम्य दिशश्च वृद्धाः तेन प्रकाशेन भृशं प्रकाशं; बभूव तेषां तव चैव सैन्यम्

That radiance spread on the earth and into the sky and spreading over all the directions, seemed to increase. The splendour was extremely fierce and made your soldiers, and theirs, visible.

वह तेज पृथ्वी और आकाश में तथा समस्त दिशाओं में फैलकर बढ़ता हुआ प्रतीत होने लगा। वह वैभव अत्यंत भयंकर था और आपके तथा उनके सैनिकों को दृष्टिगोचर कर रहा था।

तेन प्रकाशेन दिवंगमेन; संबोधिता देवगणाश्च राजन् गन्धर्वयक्षासुरसिद्धसंघाः; समागमन्नप्सरसश्च सर्वाः

O king! As that radiance spread up towards the sky, the masses of gods, the gāndharva-s, the yakṣa-s, the āsura-s and large numbers of siddha-s were awakened and assembled, with all the āpsara-s.

हे राजा! जैसे ही वह चमक आकाश की ओर फैली, देवताओं, गंधर्वों, यक्षों, असुरों और बड़ी संख्या में सिद्धों की भीड़ जागृत हो गई और सभी अप्सराओं के साथ एकत्रित हो गईं।

तद्देवगन्धर्वसमाकुलं च; यक्षासुरेन्द्राप्सरसां गणैश्च हतैश्च वीरैर्दिवमारुहद्भि;रायोधनं दिव्यकल्पं बभूव

The place was full of gods, gāndharva-s, yakṣa-s, leaders among the āsura-s, masses of āpsara-s and brave warriors who had been killed and had ascended to heaven. The field of battle looked like heaven itself.

वह स्थान देवताओं, गंधर्वों, यक्षों, असुरों के नेताओं, अप्सराओं के समूह और बहादुर योद्धाओं से भरा हुआ था जो मारे गए थे और स्वर्ग में चढ़ गए थे। युद्ध का मैदान स्वर्ग के समान प्रतीत हो रहा था।

रथाश्वनागाकुलदीपदीप्तं; संरब्धयोधाहतविद्रुताश्वम् महद्बलं व्यूढरथाश्वनागं; सुरासुरव्यूहसमं बभूव

There were chariots, horses, elephants, all illuminated with lamps. Angry warriors roamed around and so did wounded horses. Those large armies of chariots, horses and elephants were arrayed in battle formation and were as resplendent as the gods and the āsura-s, arranged in vyūha-s.

वहाँ रथ, घोड़े, हाथी, सभी दीपों से जगमगा रहे थे। क्रोधित योद्धा इधर-उधर घूमते रहे और घायल घोड़े भी। रथों, घोड़ों और हाथियों की वे विशाल सेनाएँ युद्ध की शृंखला में सुसज्जित थीं और व्यूह-रचना में व्यवस्थित देवताओं और असुरों के समान तेजस्वी थीं।

तच्छक्तिसंघाकुलचण्डवातं; महारथाभ्रं रथवाजिघोषम् शस्त्रौघवर्षं रुधिराम्बुधारं; निशि प्रवृत्तं नरदेवयुद्धम्

The force of spears was like a turbulent wind. The large chariots were like clouds. There was the roar of chariots and horses. Weapons showered down, like clouds raining blood. As night commenced, there was a battle between the men who were like gods.

भालों का बल प्रचंड वायु के समान था। बड़े-बड़े रथ बादलों के समान थे। रथों और घोड़ों की गर्जना हो रही थी। अस्त्र-शस्त्र बरसने लगे, मानो बादल खून बरसा रहे हों। जैसे ही रात होने लगी, देवताओं के समान मनुष्यों के बीच युद्ध होने लगा।

तस्मिन्महाग्निप्रतिमो महात्मा; संतापयन्पाण्डवान्विप्रमुख्यः गभस्तिभिर्मध्यगतो यथार्को; वर्षात्यये तद्वदभून्नरेन्द्र

The great-souled one was like a giant fire. He tormented the foremost among the Pāṇḍava-s. O Indra among men! He was like the sun that has reached the midpoint of the sky at the end of the monsoon.

वह महातेजस्वी एक विशाल अग्नि के समान था। उसने सबसे बड़े पांडवों को पीड़ा दी। हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! वह उस सूर्य के समान था जो वर्षा ऋतु के अंत में आकाश के मध्य बिंदु पर पहुँच गया हो।
