संजय उवाच विद्रुतं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा वध्यमानं महात्मभिः क्रोधेन महताविष्टः पुत्रस्तव विशां पते

Sañjaya said: O lord of the earth! On seeing that his own army was being slaughtered by those great-souled ones, your son was overcome by great rage.

संजय ने कहा: हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! यह देखकर कि उन महात्माओं द्वारा अपनी ही सेना का संहार किया जा रहा है, आपके पुत्र को अत्यंत क्रोध आया।

अभ्येत्य सहसा कर्णं द्रोणं च जयतां वरम् अमर्षवशमापन्नो वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यमब्रवीत्

He swiftly went to Karṇa and Droṇa, supreme among victorious ones. Overcome by feelings of intolerance, the one who was eloquent with words spoke these words.

वह तेजी से विजयी लोगों में श्रेष्ठ कर्ण और द्रोण के पास गया। असहिष्णुता की भावना से वशीभूत होकर, शब्दों में निपुण व्यक्ति ने ये शब्द कहे।

भवद्भ्यामिह संग्रामो क्रुद्धाभ्यां संप्रवर्तितः आहवे निहतं दृष्ट्वा सैन्धवं सव्यसाचिना

"Incited by your anger, the two of you started this battle, on seeing that Saindhava had been killed by Savyasachi in the battle.

'यह देखकर कि युद्ध में सव्यसाची ने सैंधव को मार डाला है, तुम्हारे क्रोध से उत्तेजित होकर तुम दोनों ने यह युद्ध आरम्भ किया।

निहन्यमानां पाण्डूनां बलेन मम वाहिनीम् भूत्वा तद्विजये शक्तावशक्ताविव पश्यतः

My army is being slaughtered by the Pāṇḍu-s. Though you are capable of obtaining victory, you are looking on, as if you are incapable.

पाण्डु-वंश द्वारा मेरी सेना का संहार किया जा रहा है। यद्यपि आप विजय प्राप्त करने में सक्षम हैं, फिर भी आप ऐसे देख रहे हैं, जैसे कि आप असमर्थ हैं।

यद्यहं भवतोस्त्याज्यो न वाच्योऽस्मि तदैव हि आवां पाण्डुसुतान्संख्ये जेष्याव इति मानदौ

If you are going to abandon me today, you should not have spoken to me in that way earlier. We will defeat the sons of Pāṇḍu in the battle.

यदि तुम आज मुझे त्यागने जा रहे हो तो पहले तुम्हें मुझसे इस प्रकार बात नहीं करनी चाहिए थी। हम पाण्डु के पुत्रों को युद्ध में हरा देंगे।

तदैवाहं वचः श्रुत्वा भवद्भ्यामनुसंमतम् कृतवान्पाण्डवैः सार्धं वैरं योधविनाशनम्

O those who grant honours! On hearing your words, I allowed this to happen. Otherwise, I would not have provoked an enmity with the Pāṇḍava-s, so destructive of warriors.

हे सम्मान देनेवालों! आपकी बातें सुनकर मैंने ऐसा होने दिया. अन्यथा, मैं पांडवों के साथ शत्रुता नहीं भड़काता, योद्धाओं का इतना विनाशकारी।

यदि नाहं परित्याज्यो भवद्भ्यां पुरुषर्षभौ युध्येतामनुरूपेण विक्रमेण सुविक्रमौ

O bulls among men! O ones who are great in valour! If I should not be abandoned by the two of you, then fight in accordance with the valour you possess."

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! हे पराक्रम में महान लोगों! यदि तुम दोनों मुझे त्याग न दो तो अपनी शक्ति के अनुसार युद्ध करो।''

वाक्प्रतोदेन तौ वीरौ प्रणुन्नौ तनयेन ते प्रावर्तयेतां तौ युद्धं घट्टिताविव पन्नगौ

Thus goaded by the words of your son, those two brave ones returned again to the battle, like snakes that have been driven with sticks.

इस प्रकार आपके पुत्र के वचनों से प्रेरित होकर वे दोनों वीर लाठियों से खदेड़े हुए साँपों के समान पुनः युद्ध में लौट आये।

ततस्तौ रथिनां श्रेष्ठौ सर्वलोकधनुर्धरौ शैनेयप्रमुखान्पार्थानभिदुद्रुवतू रणे

They were the foremost among rāṭha-s. They were the best archers in all the worlds. In that battle, they advanced against the Pārtha-s, with Śini's descendant at the forefront.

वे रथों में अग्रणी थे। वे समस्त लोकों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर थे। उस लड़ाई में, वे पार्थ-एस के खिलाफ आगे बढ़े, जिसमें सिनी का वंशज सबसे आगे था।

तथैव सहिताः पार्थाः स्वेन सैन्येन संवृताः अभ्यवर्तन्त तौ वीरौ नर्दमानौ मुहुर्मुहुः

The Pārtha-s also united, surrounded by their own soldiers and advanced against those two brave ones, who were roaring repeatedly.

पार्थवासी भी संगठित होकर अपने सैनिकों से घिरे हुए उन दोनों वीरों के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े, जो बार-बार दहाड़ रहे थे।

अथ द्रोणो महेष्वासो दशभिः शिनिपुंगवम् अविध्यत्त्वरितं क्रुद्धः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः

The great archer Droṇa, supreme among those who wielded all weapons, angrily and spiritedly pierced the bull among the Śini lineage with ten arrows.

समस्त अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलानेवालों में श्रेष्ठ महान धनुर्धर द्रोण ने क्रोध और उत्साहपूर्वक दस बाणों से शिनि वंश के उस बैल को घायल कर दिया।

कर्णश्च दशभिर्बाणैः पुत्रश्च तव सप्तभिः दशभिर्वृषसेनश्च सौबलश्चापि सप्तभिः एते कौरव संक्रन्दे शैनेयं पर्यवारयन्

Karṇa pierced him with ten arrows and your son with seven, Vṛṣasena with ten and Saubala with seven. A mās-s of Kaurava-s surrounded Śini's descendant.

कर्ण ने दस बाणों से, आपके पुत्र ने सात, वृषसेन ने दस और सौबल ने सात बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया। कौरवों के एक समूह ने शिनि के वंशज को घेर लिया।

दृष्ट्वा च समरे द्रोणं निघ्नन्तं पाण्डवीं चमूम् विव्यधुः सोमकास्तूर्णं समन्ताच्छरवृष्टिभिः

On seeing that Droṇa was slaughtering the Pāṇḍava army in the battle, the Somaka-s quickly pierced him from every side and showered arrows on him.

यह देखकर कि द्रोण युद्ध में पांडव सेना का संहार कर रहे हैं, सोमकों ने शीघ्रता से उन्हें चारों ओर से बींध डाला और उन पर बाणों की वर्षा की।

ततो द्रोणोऽहरत्प्राणान्क्षत्रियाणां विशां पते रश्मिभिर्भास्करो राजंस्तमसामिव भारत

O lord of the earth! O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Droṇa began to rob the kṣatriya-s of their lives, like the sun destroys darkness with its rays.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जैसे सूर्य अपनी किरणों से अंधकार को नष्ट कर देता है, वैसे ही द्रोण ने क्षत्रियों का जीवन छीनना शुरू कर दिया।

द्रोणेन वध्यमानानां पाञ्चालानां विशां पते शुश्रुवे तुमुलः शब्दः क्रोशतामितरेतरम्

O lord of the earth! The Pāñcāla-s were slaughtered by Droṇa and we heard a tremendous uproar as they called out to each other.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! द्रोण द्वारा पंचालों का वध कर दिया गया और जब वे एक-दूसरे को पुकार रहे थे तो हमने एक जबरदस्त कोलाहल सुना।

पुत्रानन्ये पितॄनन्ये भ्रातॄनन्ये च मातुलान् भागिनेयान्वयस्यांश्च तथा संबन्धिबान्धवान् उत्सृज्योत्सृज्य गच्छन्ति त्वरिता जीवितेप्सवः

Some abandoned their sons, others their fathers, others their brothers and maternal uncles, others their sisters' sons, friends and kin, as they quickly ran away, seeking to save their lives.

कुछ ने अपने बेटों को छोड़ दिया, दूसरों ने अपने पिता को, दूसरों ने अपने भाइयों और मामाओं को, दूसरों ने अपनी बहनों के बेटों, दोस्तों और रिश्तेदारों को छोड़ दिया, क्योंकि वे अपनी जान बचाने की तलाश में जल्दी से भाग गए।

अपरे मोहिता मोहात्तमेवाभिमुखा ययुः पाण्डवानां रणे योधाः परलोकं तथापरे

Others were confused and because of delusion, ran towards him. In the battle, other Pāṇḍava warriors were sent to the world of the hereafter.

अन्य लोग भ्रमित हो गये और भ्रम के कारण उनकी ओर दौड़ पड़े। युद्ध में अन्य पांडव योद्धाओं को परलोक भेज दिया गया।

सा तथा पाण्डवी सेना वध्यमाना महात्मभिः निशि संप्राद्रवद्राजन्नुत्सृज्योल्काः सहस्रशः

Thus the Pāṇḍava soldiers were killed by the great-souled ones. O king! They fled in the night, throwing away thousands of blazing torches.

इस प्रकार महामनुष्यों द्वारा पाण्डव सैनिक मारे गये। हे राजा! वे हजारों जलती हुई मशालें फेंककर रात में भाग गये।

पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य विजयस्याच्युतस्य च यमयोर्धर्मपुत्रस्य पार्षतस्य च पश्यतः

The warriors Bhīmasena, Vijayā, Acyuta, the twins, Dharma's son and Pārṣata looked on. With the world covered in darkness, nothing could be seen.

योद्धा भीमसेन, विजया, अच्युत, जुड़वाँ बच्चे, धर्म के पुत्र और परशात ने देखा। संसार अंधकार में डूबा होने के कारण कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था।

तमसा संवृते लोके न प्राज्ञायत किंचन कौरवाणां प्रकाशेन दृश्यन्ते तु द्रुताः परे

But because of the light that existed among the Kaurava-s, it could be seen that the enemy was running away.

परन्तु कौरवों में जो प्रकाश था, उसके कारण शत्रु भागता हुआ दिखाई दे रहा था।

द्रवमाणं तु तत्सैन्यं द्रोणकर्णौ महारथौ जघ्नतुः पृष्ठतो राजन्किरन्तौ सायकान्बहून्

O king! As the soldiers ran away, mahāratha Droṇa and Karṇa followed them from the rear and showered many arrows.

हे राजा! जैसे ही सैनिक भागे, महारथ द्रोण और कर्ण ने पीछे से उनका पीछा किया और बहुत से बाणों की वर्षा की।

पाञ्चालेषु प्रभग्नेषु दीर्यमाणेषु सर्वशः जनार्दनो दीनमनाः प्रत्यभाषत फल्गुनम्

On seeing that the Pāñcāla-s were shattered and routed in every way, Janārdana was distressed and addressed Phālguna.

यह देखकर कि पंचाल हर तरह से टूट गये और पराजित हो गये, जनार्दन व्यथित हुए और उन्होंने फाल्गुन को संबोधित किया।

द्रोणकर्णौ महेष्वासावेतौ पार्षतसात्यकी पाञ्चालांश्चैव सहितौ जघ्नतुः सायकैर्भृशम्

"Pārṣata and Sātyaki, together with the Pāñcāla-s, advanced against the great archers, Droṇa and Karṇa, and are being killed through fierce arrows.

"पर्षत और सात्यकि, पंचालों के साथ मिलकर, महान धनुर्धारियों, द्रोण और कर्ण के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े और भयंकर बाणों द्वारा मारे जा रहे हैं।

एतयोः शरवर्षेण प्रभग्ना नो महारथाः वार्यमाणापि कौन्तेय पृतना नावतिष्ठते

Those mahāratha-s have shattered them with their shower of arrows. O Kaunteya! The army should be restrained. It is still capable of taking a stand.

उन महारथियों ने अपने बाणों की वर्षा से उन्हें चूर-चूर कर दिया है। हे कौन्तेय! सेना पर लगाम लगनी चाहिए. यह अभी भी स्टैंड लेने में सक्षम है.

एतावावां सर्वसैन्यैर्व्यूढैः सम्यगुदायुधैः द्रोणं च सूतपुत्रं च प्रयतावः प्रबाधितुम्

Let us array all the soldiers in a battle formation and rallying them, let us raise our weapons and advance against Droṇa and the son of a sūta.

आइए हम सभी सैनिकों को एक युद्ध संरचना में व्यवस्थित करें और उन्हें एकजुट करें, हम अपने हथियार उठाएं और द्रोण और सूत के पुत्र के खिलाफ आगे बढ़ें।

एतौ हि बलिनौ शूरौ कृतास्त्रौ जितकाशिनौ उपेक्षितौ बलं क्रुद्धौ नाशयेतां निशामिमाम् एष भीमोऽभियात्युग्रः पुनरावर्त्य वाहिनीम्

They are powerful and brave. They are skilled in the use of weapons and desire to obtain victory. They are angrily casting aside our army and destroying it in the night."

वे शक्तिशाली और बहादुर हैं. वे अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल और विजय प्राप्त करने की इच्छा रखने वाले होते हैं। वे गुस्से में हमारी सेना को किनारे कर रहे हैं और रात में उसे नष्ट कर रहे हैं।"

वृकोदरं तथायान्तं दृष्ट्वा तत्र जनार्दनः पुनरेवाब्रवीद्राजन्हर्षयन्निव पाण्डवम्

O king! On seeing that Vṛkodara was advancing, Janārdana again spoke to Pāṇḍava, as if to cheer him.

हे राजा! यह देखकर कि वृकोदर आगे बढ़ रहा है, जनार्दन ने फिर से पांडव से बात की, मानो उन्हें खुश करने के लिए।

एष भीमो रणश्लाघी वृतः सोमकपाण्डवैः रुषितोऽभ्येति वेगेन द्रोणकर्णौ महाबलौ

"With the fierce Bhīmā advancing in front, the soldiers are returning again. This Bhīmā prides himself in battle and is surrounded by the Somaka-s and the Pāṇḍava-s.

"भयंकर भीम के आगे बढ़ने के साथ, सैनिक फिर से लौट रहे हैं। यह भीम युद्ध में गर्व करता है और सोमकों और पांडवों से घिरा हुआ है।

एतेन सहितो युध्य पाञ्चालैश्च महारथैः आश्वासनार्थं सर्वेषां सैन्यानां पाण्डुनन्दन

They are angry and are powerfully advancing against the immensely strong Droṇa and Karṇa. O descendant of the Pāṇḍu lineage! For the sake of assuring all the soldiers, fight against them, together with the mahāratha Pāñcāla-s."

वे क्रोधित हैं और अत्यंत शक्तिशाली द्रोण और कर्ण के विरुद्ध शक्तिशाली ढंग से आगे बढ़ रहे हैं। हे पाण्डु वंश के वंशज! सभी सैनिकों को आश्वस्त करने के लिए, महारथी पंचालों के साथ मिलकर उनके खिलाफ लड़ो।"

ततस्तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रावुभौ माधवपाण्डवौ द्रोणकर्णौ समासाद्य धिष्ठितौ रणमूर्धनि

Those tigers among men, Mādhava and Pāṇḍava, then approached Droṇa and Karṇa and stationed themselves at the forefront of the battle.

वे मानव बाघ, माधव और पांडव, फिर द्रोण और कर्ण के पास पहुंचे और खुद को युद्ध में सबसे आगे खड़ा कर दिया।

ततस्तत्पुनरावृत्तं युधिष्ठिरबलं महत् ततो द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च परान्ममृदतुर्युधि

Yudhiṣṭhira's large army returned again and went to the spot where Droṇa and Karṇa were crushing the enemy in the battle.

युधिष्ठिर की विशाल सेना फिर लौट आई और उस स्थान पर गई, जहां द्रोण और कर्ण युद्ध में शत्रु को कुचल रहे थे।

स संप्रहारस्तुमुलो निशि प्रत्यभवन्महान् यथा सागरयो राजंश्चन्द्रोदयविवृद्धयोः

In the night, there was a great and tumultuous encounter. O king! It was like that of two rising oceans, when the moon has arisen.

रात में, एक बड़ी और उथल-पुथल भरी मुठभेड़ हुई। हे राजा! यह ऐसा था जैसे दो महासागर उभर रहे हों, जब चंद्रमा उग आया हो।

तत उत्सृज्य पाणिभ्यः प्रदीपांस्तव वाहिनी युयुधे पाण्डवैः सार्धमुन्मत्तवदहःक्षये

Your soldiers threw away the lamps from their hands and fought with the Pāṇḍava-s, as if they were maddened at the destruction.

आपके सैनिकों ने अपने हाथों से दीपक छीन लिये और पाण्डवों से इस प्रकार युद्ध किया मानो वे विनाश से क्रोधित हो गये हों।

रजसा तमसा चैव संवृते भृशदारुणे केवलं नामगोत्रेण प्रायुध्यन्त जयैषिणः

There was an extremely terrible darkness, with dust. Desiring victory, they fought on the basis of names and family names.

वहाँ धूल से युक्त अत्यंत भयानक अंधकार था। विजय की इच्छा से वे नामों और कुलनामों के आधार पर लड़े।

अश्रूयन्त हि नामानि श्राव्यमाणानि पार्थिवैः प्रहरद्भिर्महाराज स्वयंवर इवाहवे

The names uttered by the kings were heard. O great king! That hour of the battle was like a svayaṃvara.

राजाओं द्वारा कहे गये नाम सुने गये। हे महान राजा! युद्ध की वह घड़ी स्वयंवर जैसी थी।

निःशब्दमासीत्सहसा पुनः शब्दो महानभूत् क्रुद्धानां युध्यमानानां जयतां जीयतामपि

There was sudden silence for a while and then a great uproar arose again, from the angry warriors who were victorious and those who were defeated.

थोड़ी देर के लिए अचानक सन्नाटा छा गया और फिर विजयी और पराजित क्रोधित योद्धाओं की ओर से फिर से बड़ा हंगामा खड़ा हो गया।

यत्र यत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते प्रदीपाः कुरुसत्तम तत्र तत्र स्म ते शूरा निपतन्ति पतंगवत्

O supreme among the Kuru lineage! Like insects, the brave ones were drawn to the spots where there were lamps.

हे कुरु वंश में श्रेष्ठ! कीड़ों की तरह, बहादुर लोग उन स्थानों की ओर खिंचे चले आए जहां दीपक थे।

तथा संयुध्यमानानां विगाढाभून्महानिशा पाण्डवानां च राजेन्द्र कौरवाणां च सर्वशः

O Indra among kings! As all the Pāṇḍava-s and the Kaurava-s fought, the great darkness of the night gathered around them.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! जैसे ही सभी पांडव और कौरव युद्ध कर रहे थे, रात का महान अंधकार उनके चारों ओर इकट्ठा हो गया।
