संजय उवाच घटोत्कचे तु निहते सूतपुत्रेण तां निशाम् दुःखामर्षवशं प्राप्तो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः

Sañjaya said: When Ghaṭotkaca was killed by the son of a sūta in the night, Yudhiṣṭhira, Dharma's son, was overcome by sorrow and intolerance.

संजय ने कहा: जब रात में एक सूत पुत्र द्वारा घटोत्कच को मार दिया गया, तो धर्म के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर दुःख और असहिष्णुता से उबर गए।

दृष्ट्व भीमेन महतीं वार्यमाणां चमूं तव धृष्टद्युम्नमुवाचेदं कुम्भयोनिं निवारय

On seeing that your large army had been checked by Bhīmā, he spoke to Dhṛṣṭadyumna. "Check the one who was born in a pot.

यह देखकर कि आपकी विशाल सेना को भीम ने रोक लिया है, उन्होंने धृष्टद्युम्न से बात की। “उसे जांचो जो घड़े में पैदा हुआ है.

त्वं हि द्रोणविनाशाय समुत्पन्नो हुताशनात् सशरः कवची खड्गी धन्वी च परतापनः अभिद्रव रणे हृष्टो न च ते भीः कथंचन

O scorcher of enemies! For Droṇa's destruction, you have arisen from the fire, with bows and arrows, armour and sword. You should not be frightened. In the battle, attack cheerfully.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! द्रोण के विनाश के लिये आप धनुष, बाण, कवच और तलवार लेकर अग्नि से उत्पन्न हुए हैं। तुम्हें भयभीत नहीं होना चाहिए. युद्ध में प्रसन्नतापूर्वक आक्रमण करो।

जनमेजयः शिखण्डी च दौर्मुखिश्च यशोधनः अभिद्रवन्तु संहृष्टाः कुम्भयोनिं समन्ततः

Let Janamejaya, Śikhaṇḍī and Durmukha's son, Yaśodhana, happily surround the one who has been born in a pot from all sides.

जनमेजय, शिखंडी और दुर्मुख के पुत्र यशोधन खुशी-खुशी उस व्यक्ति को चारों ओर से घेर लें, जिसका जन्म घड़े में हुआ है।

नकुलः सहदेवश्च द्रौपदेयाः प्रभद्रकाः द्रुपदश्च विराटश्च पुत्रभ्रातृसमन्वितौ

Let Nākula, Sahadeva, Draupadī's sons, the Prabhadraka-s, Drupada and Virāṭa, with their sons and brothers,

नकुल, सहदेव, द्रौपदी के पुत्र, प्रभद्रक, द्रुपद और विराट, अपने पुत्रों और भाइयों सहित,

सात्यकिः केकयाश्चैव पाण्डवश्च धनंजयः अभिद्रवन्तु वेगेन भारद्वाजवधेप्सया

Sātyaki, the Kekaya-s and Pāṇḍava Dhanañjayā powerfully attack Bhāradvāja's son, wishing to kill him.

सात्यकि, केकय और पांडव धनंजय ने भारद्वाज के पुत्र को मारने की इच्छा से उन पर शक्तिशाली हमला किया।

तथैव रथिनः सर्वे हस्त्यश्वं यच्च किंचन पादाताश्च रणे द्रोणं प्रापयन्तु महारथम्

Let all the rāṭha-s, all the elephants we have and the foot soldiers advance against mahāratha Droṇa"

हमारे सभी रथ, हमारे सभी हाथी और पैदल सैनिक महारथ द्रोण के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ें।"

तथाज्ञप्तास्तु ते सर्वे पाण्डवेन महात्मना अभ्यद्रवन्त वेगेन कुम्भयोनिं युयुत्सया

Having been thus instructed by the great-souled Pāṇḍava, all of them forcefully advanced against the one who had been born in a pot, wishing to fight with him.

महाबली पाण्डव द्वारा इस प्रकार निर्देश पाकर, वे सभी बलपूर्वक उस व्यक्ति के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े, जो एक बर्तन में पैदा हुआ था, उससे युद्ध करने की इच्छा से।

आगच्छतस्तान्सहसा सर्वोद्योगेन पाण्डवान् प्रतिजग्राह समरे द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः

Droṇa was supreme among the wielders of weapons. When the Pāṇḍava-s violently advanced, making every effort in the battle, he received them.

शस्त्रधारियों में द्रोण श्रेष्ठ थे। जब पांडव युद्ध में हर संभव प्रयास करते हुए हिंसक रूप से आगे बढ़े, तो उन्होंने उनका सामना किया।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सर्वोद्योगेन पाण्डवान् अभ्यद्रवत्सुसंक्रुद्ध इच्छन्द्रोणस्य जीवितम्

When the Pāṇḍava-s angrily attacked, King Duryodhana wished to ensure that Droṇa remained alive and made efforts to counter them.

जब पांडवों ने गुस्से में हमला किया, तो राजा दुर्योधन ने यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहा कि द्रोण जीवित रहें और उनका मुकाबला करने के प्रयास किए।

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं श्रान्तवाहनसैनिकम् पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च गर्जतामितरेतरम्

Though the mounts and the soldiers were exhausted, a battle commenced between the Pāṇḍava-s and the Kuru-s, and they roared at each other.

यद्यपि घुड़सवार और सैनिक थक गए थे, फिर भी पांडवों और कुरुओं के बीच युद्ध शुरू हो गया और वे एक-दूसरे पर गरजने लगे।

निद्रान्धास्ते महाराज परिश्रान्ताश्च संयुगे नाभ्यपद्यन्त समरे कांचिच्चेष्टां महारथाः

O great king! The mahāratha-s were blind with sleep. They were exhausted from fighting and did not know what efforts they should make in the battle.

हे महान राजा! मराठा नींद से अंधे थे। वे लड़ते-लड़ते थक गए थे और नहीं जानते थे कि उन्हें युद्ध में क्या प्रयास करना चाहिए।

त्रियामा रजनी चैषा घोररूपा भयानका सहस्रयामप्रतिमा बभूव प्राणहारिणी वध्यतां च तथा तेषां क्षतानां च विशेषतः

The triyāmā night was terrible and generated fear. It was destructive of lives and seemed equal to one thousand yāma-s. In particular, those on their side were killed and wounded.

त्रियामा रात्रि भयानक और भय उत्पन्न करने वाली थी। यह जीवन का विनाशकारी था और एक हजार यम के बराबर लगता था। विशेषकर, उनके पक्ष के लोग मारे गये और घायल हुए।

अहो रात्रिः समाजज्ञे निद्रान्धानां विशेषतः सर्वे ह्यासन्निरुत्साहाः क्षत्रिया दीनचेतसः तव चैव परेषां च गतास्त्रा विगतेषवः

Especially when it was midnight, they were blind with sleep. All the kṣatriya-s lost their enterprise and were distressed in their hearts. Your soldiers, and those of the enemy, no longer possessed any more weapons or arrows.

खासकर जब आधी रात होती थी, तो वे नींद से अंधे हो जाते थे। सभी क्षत्रियों का उद्यम नष्ट हो गया और वे हृदय से दुःखी हो गये। आपके और शत्रु के सैनिकों के पास अब कोई हथियार या तीर नहीं रहे।

ते तथा पारयन्तश्च ह्रीमन्तश्च विशेषतः स्वधर्ममनुपश्यन्तो न जहुः स्वामनीकिनीम्

Because they were modest, they passed the time there, following their own dharma. They did not abandon their own divisions.

चूँकि वे विनम्र थे, इसलिए उन्होंने अपने धर्म का पालन करते हुए वहीं समय बिताया। उन्होंने अपना विभाजन नहीं छोड़ा।

शस्त्राण्यन्ये समुत्सृज्य निद्रान्धाः शेरते जनाः गजेष्वन्ये रथेष्वन्ये हयेष्वन्ये च भारत

But other people were blind with sleep. They discarded their weapons and lay down. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Some lay down on the backs of elephants, others on chariots, still others on the backs of horses.

लेकिन बाकी लोग तो नींद से अंधे थे. उन्होंने अपने हथियार त्याग दिये और लेट गये। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कुछ हाथियों की पीठ पर, कुछ रथों पर और कुछ घोड़ों की पीठ पर लेटते थे।

निद्रान्धा नो बुबुधिरे कांचिच्चेष्टां नराधिपाः तेऽन्योन्यं समरे योधाः प्रेषयन्त यमक्षयम्

Some kings were blind with sleep and lost all sense of movement. In that battle, other warriors seized the chance to send them to Yāma's eternal abode.

कुछ राजा नींद से अंधे हो गए थे और उन्हें अपनी सारी गतिविधि की सुध नहीं रह गई थी। उस युद्ध में, अन्य योद्धाओं ने उन्हें यम के शाश्वत निवास में भेजने का मौका जब्त कर लिया।

स्वप्नायमानास्त्वपरे परानिति विचेतसः आत्मानं समरे जघ्नुः स्वानेव च परानपि

In their sleep and dreaming and unconscious, others killed those on their own side, as well as the enemy.

नींद, स्वप्न और अचेतन अवस्था में दूसरों ने अपने ही पक्ष के लोगों को, साथ ही शत्रु को भी मार डाला।

नानावाचो विमुञ्चन्तो निद्रान्धास्ते महारणे योद्धव्यमिति तिष्ठन्तो निद्रासंसक्तलोचनाः

In that great battle, they were blind with sleep and uttered many sounds. They fought in that battle, though their eyes were heavy with sleep.

उस महान युद्ध में वे नींद से अंधे हो गये और अनेक प्रकार की ध्वनियाँ निकालने लगे। वे उस युद्ध में लड़े, यद्यपि उनकी आँखें नींद से बोझिल थीं।

संमर्द्यान्ये रणे केचिन्निद्रान्धाश्च परस्परम् जघ्नुः शूरा रणे राजंस्तस्मिंस्तमसि दारुणे

Some moved in that battle, and though blind with sleep, killed each other. O king! They were fighting in that terrible darkness.

कुछ लोग उस युद्ध में आगे बढ़े और नींद में अंधे होकर भी एक-दूसरे को मार डाला। हे राजा! वे उस भयानक अंधकार में युद्ध कर रहे थे।

हन्यमानं तथात्मानं परेभ्यो बहवो जनाः नाभ्यजानन्त समरे निद्रया मोहिता भृशम्

Some brave ones killed many on their own side, as well as those on the enemy's side. Because they were overcome by severe sleep in that battle, they could not distinguish.

कुछ वीरों ने अपने पक्ष के साथ-साथ शत्रु पक्ष के भी कई लोगों को मार डाला। क्योंकि उस युद्ध में उन्हें गहरी नींद आ गई थी, इसलिए वे भेद नहीं कर सके।

तेषामेतादृशीं चेष्टां विज्ञाय पुरुषर्षभः उवाच वाक्यं बीभत्सुरुच्चैः संनादयन्दिशः

O bull among men! On discerning that this was the state of affairs, Bībhatsu spoke loudly.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! यह समझने पर कि यही स्थिति है, बिभात्सु ने जोर से कहा।

श्रान्ता भवन्तो निद्रान्धाः सर्व एव सवाहनाः तमसा चावृते सैन्ये रजसा बहुलेन च

"All you, and the mounts, are exhausted and blind with sleep. The soldiers are covered in darkness and a lot of dust.

"आप सभी, और पर्वतारोही, थके हुए हैं और नींद से अंधे हैं। सैनिक अंधेरे और बहुत सारी धूल में ढके हुए हैं।

ते यूयं यदि मन्यध्वमुपारमत सैनिकाः निमीलयत चात्रैव रणभूमौ मुहूर्तकम्

If you so think, let the soldiers desist from fighting. In the field of battle, let them close their eyes for a while.

यदि आप ऐसा सोचते हैं तो सैनिकों को युद्ध करने से विरत रहने दीजिये। युद्ध के मैदान में उन्हें कुछ देर के लिए अपनी आंखें बंद कर लेने दीजिए.

ततो विनिद्रा विश्रान्ताश्चन्द्रमस्युदिते पुनः संसाधयिष्यथान्योन्यं स्वर्गाय कुरुपाण्डवाः

Let them sleep and rest until the moon rises. Then, for the sake of heaven, let the Kuru-s and Pāṇḍava-s fight again."

चंद्रमा निकलने तक उन्हें सोने और आराम करने दें। तो फिर, स्वर्ग की खातिर, कुरु-पांडवों को फिर से लड़ने दो।"

तद्वचः सर्वधर्मज्ञा धार्मिकस्य निशम्य ते अरोचयन्त सैन्यानि तथा चान्योन्यमब्रुवन्

Having heard the words of the one who observed dharma, the soldiers who knew about dharma found this acceptable and loudly spoke to each other.

धर्म का पालन करने वाले की बातें सुनकर धर्म के ज्ञाता सैनिकों को यह स्वीकार्य लगा और वे एक-दूसरे से ऊंचे स्वर से बोलने लगे।

चुक्रुशुः कर्ण कर्णेति राजन्दुर्योधनेति च उपारमत पाण्डूनां विरता हि वरूथिनी

"O Karṇa! O Karṇa! O King Duryodhana! The Pāṇḍu-s have stopped attacking the army. Let us desist."

"हे कर्ण! हे कर्ण! हे राजा दुर्योधन! पांडु-वंश ने सेना पर हमला करना बंद कर दिया है। आइए हम ऐसा करना बंद करें।"

तथा विक्रोशमानस्य फल्गुनस्य ततस्ततः उपारमत पाण्डूनां सेना तव च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On hearing Phālguna's words, the Pāṇḍu-s ceased to attack your army.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! फाल्गुन के वचन सुनकर पाण्डु ने आपकी सेना पर आक्रमण करना बन्द कर दिया।

तामस्य वाचं देवाश्च ऋषयश्च महात्मनः सर्वसैन्यानि चाक्षुद्राः प्रहृष्टाः प्रत्यपूजयन्

The gods, the riṣi-s and even the inferior soldiers were overjoyed and applauded the great-souled one's words.

देवता, ऋषि-मुनि और यहाँ तक कि निम्न सैनिक भी बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने उस महात्मा के शब्दों की सराहना की।

तत्संपूज्य वचोऽक्रूरं सर्वसैन्यानि भारत मुहूर्तमस्वपन्राजञ्श्रान्तानि भरतर्षभ

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Those benevolent words were applauded by all the soldiers. O king! O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Those on our side, and on the side of the enemy, began to rest for some time.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन परोपकारी शब्दों की सभी सैनिकों ने सराहना की। हे राजा! हे भरत वंश में बैल! हमारी तरफ के और दुश्मन की तरफ के लोग कुछ देर के लिए आराम करने लगे।

सा तु संप्राप्य विश्रामं ध्वजिनी तव भारत सुखमाप्तवती वीरमर्जुनं प्रत्यपूजयत्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having obtained some rest and sleep, your soldiers also honoured the brave Arjuna and said,

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कुछ विश्राम और निद्रा प्राप्त करके आपके सैनिकों ने भी वीर अर्जुन का आदर-सत्कार किया और कहा-

त्वयि वेदास्तथास्त्राणि त्वयि बुद्धिपराक्रमौ धर्मस्त्वयि महाबाहो दया भूतेषु चानघ

"The Veda-s and all weapons are vested in you. You possess intelligence and valour. O mighty-armed one! O unblemished one! You have dharma and compassion for beings.

"वेद और सभी हथियार आप में निहित हैं। आपके पास बुद्धि और वीरता है। हे महाबाहु! हे निष्कलंक! आपके पास प्राणियों के लिए धर्म और दया है।

यच्चाश्वस्तास्तवेच्छामः शर्म पार्थ तदस्तु ते मनसश्च प्रियानर्थान्वीर क्षिप्रमवाप्नुहि

O Pārtha! Since we have obtained assurance from you, may you be prosperous. O brave one! May you swiftly obtain all those things that are dear to your heart."

हे पार्थ! चूँकि हमने आपसे आश्वासन प्राप्त किया है, आप समृद्ध हों। हे वीर! क्या आप उन सभी चीज़ों को शीघ्रता से प्राप्त कर सकते हैं जो आपके दिल को प्रिय हैं।"

इति ते तं नरव्याघ्रं प्रशंसन्तो महारथाः निद्रया समवाक्षिप्तास्तूष्णीमासन्विशां पते

In this way, mahāratha-s praised that tiger among men. O lord of the earth! They swiftly went to sleep and there was silence.

इस प्रकार महारथियों ने मनुष्यों में उस बाघ की प्रशंसा की। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वे तेजी से सोने चले गये और सन्नाटा छा गया।

अश्वपृष्ठेषु चाप्यन्ये रथनीडेषु चापरे गजस्कन्धगताश्चान्ये शेरते चापरे क्षितौ

Some were on the backs of horses. Others were on the seats of chariots. Some lay down on the backs of elephants. Others lay down on the ground.

कुछ घोड़ों की पीठ पर थे। अन्य लोग रथों की सीटों पर थे। कुछ हाथियों की पीठ पर लेट गये। बाकी लोग जमीन पर लेट गये.

सायुधाः सगदाश्चैव सखड्गाः सपरश्वधाः सप्रासकवचाश्चान्ये नराः सुप्ताः पृथक्पृथक्

The men slept separately, with their weapons, their clubs, their swords, their battleaxes, their lances, their armour and their horses.

वे लोग अपने हथियारों, अपनी लाठियों, अपनी तलवारों, अपनी कुल्हाड़ी, अपने भाले, अपने कवच और अपने घोड़ों के साथ अलग-अलग सोए थे।

गजास्ते पन्नगाभोगैर्हस्तैर्भूरेणुरूषितैः निद्रान्धा वसुधां चक्रुर्घ्राणनिःश्वासशीतलाम्

The elephants possessed trunks like serpents, decorated with dust. They were blind with sleep and cooled the earth with their inhalation and exhalation.

हाथियों के पास साँपों की तरह सूंडें थीं, जो धूल से सजी हुई थीं। वे नींद से अंधे हो गए थे और अपनी साँस और साँस छोड़ने से पृथ्वी को ठंडा कर देते थे।

गजाः शुशुभिरे तत्र निःश्वसन्तो महीतले विशीर्णा गिरयो यद्वन्निःश्वसद्भिर्महोरगैः

As the elephants breathed on the ground, it was beautiful. They looked like scattered mountains, on which, large serpents were breathing.

जैसे ही हाथी जमीन पर सांस लेते थे, यह सुंदर था। वे बिखरे हुए पहाड़ों की तरह लग रहे थे, जिन पर बड़े-बड़े सांप सांस ले रहे थे।

समां च विषमां चक्रुः खुराग्रैर्विक्षतां महीम् हयाः काञ्चनयोक्त्राश्च केसरालम्बिभिर्युगैः सुषुपुस्तत्र राजेन्द्र युक्ता वाहेषु सर्वशः

There were horses with golden harnesses, their manes intertwined with their reins. They stamped the level ground with their hooves and made it uneven. O Indra among kings! Everyone there slept, with his mount.

वहाँ सुनहरे हार्नेस वाले घोड़े थे, उनके अयाल उनकी लगाम से गुंथे हुए थे। उन्होंने समतल ज़मीन को अपने खुरों से कुचल दिया और उसे ऊबड़-खाबड़ बना दिया। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! वहाँ हर कोई अपनी सवारी के साथ सो गया।

तत्तथा निद्रया भग्नमवाचमस्वपद्बलम् कुशलैरिव विन्यस्तं पटे चित्रमिवाद्भुतम्

Without speaking, the armies slept there and it looked like a wonderful picture drawn by a skilled painter.

बिना बोले सेनाएं वहीं सो गईं और ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे किसी कुशल चित्रकार ने कोई अद्भुत चित्र बनाया हो।

ते क्षत्रियाः कुण्डलिनो युवानः; परस्परं सायकविक्षताङ्गाः कुम्भेषु लीनाः सुषुपुर्गजानां; कुचेषु लग्ना इव कामिनीनाम्

The kṣatriya-s were young and adorned in earrings. They had injured each other's limbs through arrows. They slept against the temporal lobes of elephants, as if against the breasts of beautiful women.

क्षत्रिय युवा थे और बालियों से सुसज्जित थे। उन्होंने बाणों द्वारा एक-दूसरे के अंगों को घायल कर दिया था। वे हाथियों के लौकिक लोबों के सामने सोते थे, मानो सुंदर महिलाओं के स्तनों के सामने।

ततः कुमुदनाथेन कामिनीगण्डपाण्डुना नेत्रानन्देन चन्द्रेण माहेन्द्री दिगलंकृता

The moon, the lord of lotuses that bloom in the night, arose and its complexion was as fair as the cheeks of a maiden. It was a delight to the eyes and decorated the direction presided over by the great Indra.

रात में खिलने वाले कमलों का स्वामी चंद्रमा उदय हुआ और उसका रंग कन्या के गालों के समान गोरा था। यह आंखों को प्रसन्न करने वाला था और महान इंद्र की अध्यक्षता वाली दिशा को सुशोभित करता था।

ततो मुहूर्ताद्भगवान्पुरस्ताच्छशलक्षणः अरुणं दर्शयामास ग्रसञ्ज्योतिःप्रभं प्रभुः

In a short while, the illustrious one with the mark of a hare showed his red light. The lord outshone the light of the stellar bodies.

थोड़ी ही देर में ख़रगोश के निशान वाले भव्य ने अपनी लाल बत्ती दिखायी। प्रभु ने तारकीय पिंडों के प्रकाश को मात दे दी।

अरुणस्य तु तस्यानु जातरूपसमप्रभम् रश्मिजालं महच्चन्द्रो मन्दं मन्दमवासृजत्

The red light yielded to the complexion of gold. Slowly, the great moon's net of rays spread everywhere.

लाल रोशनी सोने के रंग में बदल गई। धीरे-धीरे महान चन्द्रमा की किरणों का जाल सर्वत्र फैल गया।

उत्सारयन्तः प्रभया तमस्ते चन्द्ररश्मयः पर्यगच्छञ्शनैः सर्वा दिशः खं च क्षितिं तथा

The radiance of the moon's rays dispelled the darkness. They slowly covered all the directions, the sky and the earth.

चन्द्रमा की किरणों की चमक से अंधकार दूर हो गया। उन्होंने धीरे-धीरे सभी दिशाओं, आकाश और पृथ्वी को ढक लिया।

ततो मुहूर्ताद्भुवनं ज्योतिर्भूतमिवाभवत् अप्रख्यमप्रकाशं च जगामाशु तमस्तथा

In a short while, the world became illuminated. The darkness that could not be described quickly vanished.

थोड़ी ही देर में संसार प्रकाशमय हो गया। जिस अँधेरे का वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता था वह तुरंत गायब हो गया।

प्रतिप्रकाशिते लोके दिवाभूते निशाकरे विचेरुर्न विचेरुश्च राजन्नक्तंचरास्ततः

The world was illuminated by the moon, as if it was day. O king! Some creatures that travel in the night continued to roam, while others ceased.

चन्द्रमा से संसार इस प्रकार प्रकाशित हो रहा था मानो दिन हो। हे राजा! रात में यात्रा करने वाले कुछ प्राणी घूमते रहे, जबकि अन्य बंद हो गए।

बोध्यमानं तु तत्सैन्यं राजंश्चन्द्रस्य रश्मिभिः बुबुधे शतपत्राणां वनं महदिवाम्भसि

O king! The soldiers were awakened by the rays of the moon. They awoke like a grove of lotuses, when the great day dawns.

हे राजा! चन्द्रमा की किरणों से सैनिक जाग उठे। जब महान दिन का उदय होता है, तो वे कमल के बगीचे की तरह जाग जाते हैं।

यथा चन्द्रोदयोद्धूतः क्षुभितः सागरो भवेत् तथा चन्द्रोदयोद्धूतः स बभूव बलार्णवः

When the moon arose, it was as if the ocean was agitated. When the moon arose, the armies became like oceans.

जब चंद्रमा निकला तो मानो समुद्र में हलचल मच गई। चन्द्रमा के उदय होते ही सेनाएँ समुद्र के समान हो गईं।
