संजय उवाच प्रतिघातं तु सैन्यस्य नामृष्यत वृकोदरः सोऽभिनद्बाह्लिकं षष्ट्या कर्णं च दशभिः शरैः

Sañjaya said: Vṛkodara could not tolerate the slaughter of the soldiers. He struck Bahlika with sixty and Karṇa with ten arrows.

संजय ने कहा: वृकोदर सैनिकों का वध सहन नहीं कर सके। उसने बाह्लीक को साठ और कर्ण को दस बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तस्य द्रोणः शितैर्बाणैस्तीक्ष्णधारैरयस्मयैः जीवितान्तमभिप्रेप्सुर्मर्मण्याशु जघान ह

Droṇa wished to kill him and used sharp and iron arrows that were whetted at the tip and penetrated the inner organs to swiftly strike him, wishing to take away his life.

द्रोण ने उसे मारना चाहा और उसके प्राण हर लेने की इच्छा से उस पर तेजी से प्रहार करने के लिए नुकीले और लोहे के तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया, जो सिरे पर तीखा किया गया था और आंतरिक अंगों में घुस गया था।

कर्णो द्वादशभिर्बाणैरश्वत्थामा च सप्तभिः षड्भिर्दुर्योधनो राजा तत एनमवाकिरत्

Karṇa pierced him with twelve arrows, Aśvatthāma with seven and King Duryodhana with six.

कर्ण ने बारह, अश्वत्थामा ने सात और राजा दुर्योधन ने छह बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

भीमसेनोऽपि तान्सर्वान्प्रत्यविध्यन्महाबलः द्रोणं पञ्चाशतेषूणां कर्णं च दशभिः शरैः

But the immensely strong Bhīmasena pierced all of them back in return. He struck Droṇa with fifty arrows, Karṇa with ten arrows,

परंतु अत्यंत बलशाली भीमसेन ने बदले में उन सभी को भेद दिया। उसने द्रोण को पचास बाणों से, कर्ण को दस बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

दुर्योधनं द्वादशभिर्द्रौणिं चाष्टाभिराशुगैः आरावं तुमुलं कुर्वन्नभ्यवर्तत तान्रणे

Duryodhana with twelve and Droṇa's son with eight swift arrows. Having engaged in that battle, he let out a loud roar.

दुर्योधन के पास बारह और द्रोण के पुत्र के पास आठ वेगशाली बाण थे। उस युद्ध में संलग्न होकर उसने जोर से गर्जना की।

तस्मिन्संत्यजति प्राणान्मृत्युसाधारणीकृते अजातशत्रुस्तान्योधान्भीमं त्रातेत्यचोदयत्

They fought, prepared to give up their lives, and death was easily achieved. Ajātaśatru sent many warriors, instructing them to save Bhīmā.

वे लड़े, अपनी जान देने के लिए तैयार हुए और आसानी से मौत हासिल कर ली गई। अजातशत्रु ने भीम को बचाने का निर्देश देते हुए कई योद्धाओं को भेजा।

ते ययुर्भीमसेनस्य समीपममितौजसः युयुधानप्रभृतयो माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ

Those infinitely energetic ones approached near Bhīmasena. There were Yuyudhāna and the others and the two Pāṇḍava-s who were Mādrī's sons.

वे असीम ऊर्जावान भीमसेन के पास आये। वहां युयुधान और अन्य तथा दो पांडव थे जो माद्री के पुत्र थे।

ते समेत्य सुसंरब्धाः सहिताः पुरुषर्षभाः महेष्वासवरैर्गुप्तं द्रोणानीकं बिभित्सवः

Those bulls among men were angry and united. They advanced, wishing to shatter Droṇa's army, which was protected by the supreme among great archers.

मनुष्यों के बीच वे बैल क्रोधित और एकजुट थे। वे द्रोण की सेना को नष्ट करने की इच्छा से आगे बढ़े, जो महान धनुर्धरों में सर्वोच्च द्वारा संरक्षित थी।

समापेतुर्महावीर्या भीमप्रभृतयो रथाः तान्प्रत्यगृह्णादव्यग्रो द्रोणोऽपि रथिनां वरः

Those immensely valorous ones, Bhīmā and the other rāṭha-s, advanced and were fiercely received by Droṇa and the best of rāṭha-s.

वे अत्यंत शूरवीर, भीम तथा अन्य रथ आगे बढ़े और द्रोण तथा श्रेष्ठ रथों ने उनका जमकर स्वागत किया।

महाबलानतिरथान्वीरान्समरशोभिनः बाह्यं मृत्युभयं कृत्वा तावकाः पाण्डवान्ययुः

Those brave and immensely strong atiratha-s were the ornaments of any battle. Outwardly giving up all fear of death, those on your side fought with the Pāṇḍava-s.

वे बहादुर और बेहद शक्तिशाली अतिरथ किसी भी युद्ध के आभूषण थे। बाह्य रूप से मृत्यु का भय त्यागकर आपके पक्ष के लोगों ने पांडवों से युद्ध किया।

सादिनः सादिनोऽभ्यघ्नंस्तथैव रथिनो रथान् आसीच्छक्त्यसिसंपातो युद्धमासीत्परश्वधैः

Riders killed riders and rāṭha-s killed rāṭha-s. The battle commenced, lances against lances, and with swords and battleaxes.

सवारों ने सवारों को मार डाला और रथों ने रथों को मार डाला। युद्ध शुरू हुआ, भालों के विरुद्ध भाले, तलवारों और फरसों से।

निकृष्टमसियुद्धं च बभूव कटुकोदयम् कुञ्जराणां च संघातैर्युद्धमासीत्सुदारुणम्

There was a terrible clash with swords and it led to a cruel carnage. Because of the clash of elephants, the battle became extremely dreadful.

तलवारों से भयानक संघर्ष हुआ और भीषण नरसंहार हुआ। हाथियों के संघर्ष के कारण युद्ध अत्यंत भयानक हो गया।

अपतत्कुञ्जरादन्यो हयादन्यस्त्ववाक्शिराः नरो बाणेन निर्भिन्नो रथादन्यश्च मारिष

Some fell down from elephants. Others fell down from horses, their heads hanging down. O venerable one! Other men fell down from chariots, pierced by arrows.

कुछ हाथियों से नीचे गिर गये। अन्य लोग घोड़ों से गिर गये, उनके सिर नीचे लटक गये। हे आदरणीय! अन्य लोग बाणों से घायल होकर रथों से गिर पड़े।

तत्रान्यस्य च संमर्दे पतितस्य विवर्मणः शिरः प्रध्वंसयामास वक्षस्याक्रम्य कुञ्जरः

Others were crushed in that encounter and fell down, shorn of their armour. Elephants attacked the chests and crushed the heads.

अन्य लोग उस मुठभेड़ में कुचले गए और अपने कवच छीनकर गिर पड़े। हाथियों ने छाती पर हमला कर सिर कुचल दिये।

अपरेऽप्यपराञ्जघ्नुर्वारणाः पतितान्नरान् विषाणैश्चावनिं गत्वा व्यभिन्दन्रथिनो बहून्

In other places, elephants crushed men who had fallen down. Elephants struck the ground with their tusks and mangled many rāṭha-s.

अन्य स्थानों पर हाथियों ने गिरे हुए लोगों को कुचल दिया। हाथियों ने अपने दाँतों से ज़मीन पर प्रहार किया और कई रथों को क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया।

नरान्त्रैः केचिदपरे विषाणालग्नसंस्रवैः बभ्रमुः शतशो नागा मृद्नन्तः शतशो नरान्

Other men were crushed by elephants that were pierced with weapons. Hundreds of elephants roamed around and crushed hundreds of men.

अन्य लोगों को हाथियों द्वारा कुचल दिया गया था जिन्हें हथियारों से छेद दिया गया था। सैकड़ों हाथी इधर-उधर घूमते रहे और सैकड़ों मनुष्यों को कुचल डाला।

कांस्यायसतनुत्राणान्नराश्वरथकुञ्जरान् पतितान्पोथयां चक्रुर्द्विपाः स्थूलनडानिव

There were men with bronze armour on their bodies and horses, chariots and elephants. They fell down and were crushed by elephants, as if they were thick reeds.

उनके शरीर पर पीतल के कवच और घोड़े, रथ और हाथी थे। वे गिर गये और हाथियों द्वारा कुचल दिये गये, मानो वे मोटे नरकट हों।

गृध्रपत्राधिवासांसि शयनानि नराधिपाः ह्रीमन्तः कालसंपक्वाः सुदुःखान्यधिशेरते

Kings lay down to sleep on beds made out of the feathers of vultures. They were modest. But having been ripened by time, they lay down on beds of great distress.

राजा गिद्धों के पंखों से बने बिस्तरों पर सोने के लिए लेटते थे। वे विनम्र थे. लेकिन समय के साथ पक जाने के कारण वे बड़े संकट के बिस्तर पर लेट गए।

हन्ति स्मात्र पिता पुत्रं रथेनाभ्यतिवर्तते पुत्रश्च पितरं मोहान्निर्मर्यादमवर्तत

Advancing on a chariot, the father killed the son. Out of confusion and disregarding all honour, the son killed the father.

रथ पर आगे बढ़ते हुए पिता ने पुत्र को मार डाला। भ्रम के कारण और सभी सम्मानों की अवहेलना करते हुए, बेटे ने पिता की हत्या कर दी।

अक्षो भग्नो ध्वजश्छिन्नश्छत्रमुर्व्यां निपातितम् युगार्धं छिन्नमादाय प्रदुद्राव तथा हयः

Wheels of chariots were shattered. Standards were torn. Umbrellas were shredded and brought down. Dragging broken yokes, horses ran away.

रथों के पहिये चकनाचूर हो गये। मानकों की धज्जियां उड़ाई गईं। छतरियों को टुकड़े-टुकड़े करके नीचे लाया गया। टूटे हुए जुए खींचते हुए, घोड़े भागे।

सासिर्बाहुर्निपतितः शिरश्छिन्नं सकुण्डलम् गजेनाक्षिप्य बलिना रथः संचूर्णितः क्षितौ

Arms wielding swords were brought down. Heads sporting earrings were severed. Powerful elephants threw down chariots and crushed them down on the ground.

तलवार चलाने वाले हथियारों को नीचे लाया गया। कानों में बालियाँ पहने सिर काट दिये गये। शक्तिशाली हाथियों ने रथों को नीचे गिरा दिया और उन्हें ज़मीन पर कुचल दिया।

रथिना ताडितो नागो नाराचेनापतद्व्यसुः सारोहश्चापतद्वाजी गजेनाताडितो भृशम्

Charioteers struck elephants with iron arrows and brought them down. Severely wounded by elephants, riders fell down from horses.

सारथियों ने लोहे के बाणों से हाथियों पर प्रहार किया और उन्हें नीचे गिरा दिया। हाथियों से गंभीर रूप से घायल होकर सवार घोड़ों से नीचे गिर पड़े।

निर्मर्यादं महद्युद्धमवर्तत सुदारुणम् हा तात हा पुत्र सखे क्वासि तिष्ठ क्व धावसि

A cruel and great battle raged and it was extremely terrible. "Āla-s, father!" "Āla-s, son!", "Friend, where are you?", "Stay! Where are you running?",

एक क्रूर और महान युद्ध छिड़ गया और वह अत्यंत भयानक था। "अला-स, पिता!" "अला-स, बेटा!", "दोस्त, तुम कहाँ हो?", "रुको! तुम कहाँ भाग रहे हो?",

प्रहराहर जह्येनं स्मितक्ष्वेडितगर्जितैः इत्येवमुच्चरन्त्यः स्म श्रूयन्ते विविधा गिरः

"Strike!", "Capture!", "Kill!'" These and other words mixed with the roars and sounds of laughter and many other kinds of noise were spoken and heard.

"मारो!", "कब्जा करो!", "मार डालो!" ये और अन्य शब्द गर्जनाओं और हँसी की आवाज़ और कई अन्य प्रकार के शोर के साथ मिश्रित होकर बोले और सुने गए।

नरस्याश्वस्य नागस्य समसज्जत शोणितम् उपाशाम्यद्रजो भौमं भीरून्कश्मलमाविशत्

The blood of men, horses and elephants mingled together. The dust that arose from the ground was pacified. Those who were cowards became distressed.

मनुष्यों, घोड़ों और हाथियों का खून एक साथ मिल गया। जमीन से उठी धूल को शांत किया गया. जो कायर थे वे परेशान हो गये।

आसीत्केशपरामर्शो मुष्टियुद्धं च दारुणम् नखैर्दन्तैश्च शूराणामद्वीपे द्वीपमिच्छताम्

They dragged each other by the hair. There were terrible fights with fists. Brave ones fought with nails and teeth, wishing to find refuge where no refuge could be found.

उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को बाल पकड़कर खींचा। घूंसों से भयंकर युद्ध होने लगे। जहाँ कोई शरण न मिले, वहाँ शरण पाने की इच्छा से वीर लोग नाखूनों और दाँतों से लड़े।

तत्राच्छिद्यत वीरस्य सखड्गो बाहुरुद्यतः सधनुश्चापरस्यापि सशरः साङ्कुशस्तथा

Heroes raised swords in their arms, but those were severed. So were others holding bows, arrows or goads.

वीरों ने भुजाओं में तलवारें उठायीं, परन्तु वे कट गयीं। इसी प्रकार अन्य लोग भी धनुष, बाण या अंकुश धारण किये हुए थे।

प्राक्रोशदन्यमन्योऽत्र तथान्यो विमुखोऽद्रवत् अन्यः प्राप्तस्य चान्यस्य शिरः कायादपाहरत्

Someone loudly challenged another. Someone else fled, running away. Others confronted others and severed the head from the body.

किसी ने जोर से दूसरे को ललकारा। कोई और भाग गया, भाग गया। दूसरों ने विरोध किया और सिर धड़ से अलग कर दिया।

शब्दमभ्यद्रवच्चान्यः शब्दादन्योऽद्रवद्भृशम् स्वानन्योऽथ परानन्यो जघान निशितैः शरैः

Some attacked others with loud roars. Others were severely frightened at the sounds and fled. Some killed the enemy, or those on one's own side, with sharp arrows.

कुछ ने तेज़ दहाड़ के साथ दूसरों पर हमला किया। अन्य लोग आवाजों से बुरी तरह डर गए और भाग गए। कुछ ने तीखे बाणों से शत्रु को या अपने पक्ष के लोगों को मार डाला।

गिरिशृङ्गोपमश्चात्र नाराचेन निपातितः मातङ्गो न्यपतद्भूमौ नदीरोध इवोष्णगे

Elephants that were like the peaks of mountains were brought down by iron arrows. They lay down, like islands in a river during the summer.

पर्वतों की चोटियों के समान विशाल हाथियों को लोहे के बाणों द्वारा गिरा दिया गया। वे गर्मी के दिनों में नदी के द्वीपों की तरह लेटे रहते हैं।

तथैव रथिनं नागः क्षरन्गिरिरिवारुजत् अध्यतिष्ठत्पदा भूमौ सहाश्वं सहसारथिम्

There were elephants that exuded musth like mountainous streams. They crushed chariots down on the ground with their feet, together with the horses and the charioteers.

वहाँ हाथी थे जो पर्वतीय झरनों के समान मादक द्रव्य छोड़ रहे थे। उन्होंने घोड़ों और सारथियों समेत रथों को अपने पैरों से भूमि पर कुचल डाला।

शूरान्प्रहरतो दृष्ट्वा कृतास्त्रान्रुधिरोक्षितान् बहूनप्याविशन्मोहो भीरून्हृदयदुर्बलान्

There were brave ones who were skilled in the use of weapons. On seeing that they were covered with blood, but were still striking each other, those who were cowards and weak in heart lost their senses.

ऐसे शूरवीर भी थे जो अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल थे। यह देखकर कि वे खून से लथपथ थे, लेकिन फिर भी एक-दूसरे पर वार कर रहे थे, जो कायर और दिल से कमजोर थे, वे अपनी इंद्रियाँ खो बैठे।

सर्वमाविग्नमभवन्न प्राज्ञायत किंचन सैन्ये च रजसा ध्वस्ते निर्मर्यादमवर्तत

Everyone was distressed and nothing could be distinguished. Despite the dust raised by the soldiers, the cruel battle raged on.

हर कोई परेशान था और कुछ भी पता नहीं चल पा रहा था। सैनिकों द्वारा उठायी गयी धूल के बावजूद, क्रूर युद्ध जारी रहा।

ततः सेनापतिः शीघ्रमयं काल इति ब्रुवन् नित्याभित्वरितानेव त्वरयामास पाण्डवान्

The commander said, "Make haste. This is the time." He swiftly led the Pāṇḍava-s, who were always full of enterprise.

सेनापति ने कहा, "जल्दी करो। यही समय है।" उन्होंने तेजी से पांडवों का नेतृत्व किया, जो हमेशा उद्यम से भरे रहते थे।

कुर्वन्तः शासनं तस्य पाण्डवेया यशस्विनः सरो हंसा इवापेतुर्घ्नन्तो द्रोणरथं प्रति

Having been thus instructed, the illustrious Pāṇḍaveya-s advanced towards Droṇa's chariot, wishing to kill him, like swans descending on a lake.

इस प्रकार निर्देश पाकर महाबली पाण्डविये द्रोण को मारने की इच्छा से उनके रथ की ओर बढ़े, जैसे हंस झील पर उतर रहे हों।

गृह्णीताद्रवतान्योन्यं विभीता विनिकृन्तत इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दो दुर्धर्षस्य रथं प्रति

"Seize!" "Do not flee!" "Do not be scared!" "Cut him down!" These and other sounds were heard in the vicinity of the invincible one's chariot.

"जब्त!" "भागो मत!" "डरें नहीं!" "उसे काट दो!" ये और अन्य ध्वनियाँ अजेय के रथ के आसपास सुनी गईं।

ततो द्रोणः कृपः कर्णो द्रौणी राजा जयद्रथः विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ शल्यश्चैनानवारयन्

Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Droṇa's son, King Jayadratha, Vinda and Anuvinda from Avanti and Śalya repulsed them.

द्रोण, कृप, कर्ण, द्रोण के पुत्र, राजा जयद्रथ, अवंती के विन्द और अनुविन्द और शल्य ने उन्हें खदेड़ दिया।

ते त्वार्यधर्मसंरब्धा दुर्निवार्या दुरासदाः शरार्ता न जहुर्द्रोणं पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह

The Pāñcāla-s and the Pāṇḍava-s were noble in their dharma. They were angry. They were difficult to counter and difficult to resist. Though oppressed by arrows, they did not withdraw.

पंचाल और पांडव अपने धर्म में महान थे। वे गुस्से में थे। उनका मुकाबला करना कठिन था और विरोध करना कठिन था। बाणों से प्रताड़ित होने पर भी वे पीछे नहीं हटे।

ततो द्रोणोऽभिसंक्रुद्धो विसृजञ्शतशः शरान् चेदिपाञ्चालपाण्डूनामकरोत्कदनं महत्

Droṇa became extremely enraged and released hundreds of arrows, causing a great carnage among the Cedi-s, Pāñcāla-s and Pāṇḍava-s.

द्रोण अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गए और उन्होंने सैकड़ों बाण छोड़े, जिससे चेदि, पंचाल और पांडवों में भारी नरसंहार हुआ।

तस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषः शुश्रुवे दिक्षु मारिष वज्रसंघातसंकाशस्त्रासयन्पाण्डवान्बहून्

O venerable one! The twang of his bowstring and the slapping of his palms were heard in all the directions. They were like the sound of thunder and caused fright among many of the Pāṇḍava-s.

हे आदरणीय! उसकी धनुष की प्रत्यंचा की टंकार और हथेलियों की थाप सभी दिशाओं में सुनाई दे रही थी। वे गड़गड़ाहट की आवाज की तरह थे और कई पांडवों में डर पैदा कर रहे थे।

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे जिष्णुर्हत्वा संशप्तकान्बली अभ्ययात्तत्र यत्र स्म द्रोणः पाण्डून्प्रमर्दति

At this time, having slain the powerful saṃśaptaka-s, Jiṣṇu arrived at the spot where Droṇa was crushing the Pāṇḍu-s.

इस समय, शक्तिशाली संशप्तकों को मारकर, जिष्णु उस स्थान पर पहुंचे जहां द्रोण पांडु-एस को कुचल रहे थे।

तं शरौघमहावर्तं शोणितोदं महाह्रदम् तीर्णः संशप्तकान्हत्वा प्रत्यदृश्यत फल्गुनः

He had crossed many whirlpools made out of arrows and giant lakes made out of blood. Having crossed them and having killed the saṃśaptaka-s, Phālguna showed himself.

उन्होंने बाणों से बने अनेक भँवरों और रक्त से बनी विशाल झीलों को पार किया था। उन्हें पार करके और संशप्तकों को मारकर फाल्गुन ने स्वयं को प्रकट किया।

तस्य कीर्तिमतो लक्ष्म सूर्यप्रतिमतेजसः दीप्यमानमपश्याम तेजसा वानरध्वजम्

He was the accomplisher of deeds. He was like the sun in his energy. The one with the monkey on his banner was seen to be radiant in his energy.

वह कर्मों को सिद्ध करने वाला था। वह अपनी ऊर्जा में सूर्य के समान थे। जिसके बैनर पर बंदर था वह अपनी ऊर्जा से दीप्तिमान दिखाई दे रहा था।

संशप्तकसमुद्रं तमुच्छोष्यास्त्रगभस्तिभिः स पाण्डवयुगान्तार्कः कुरूनप्यभ्यतीतपत्

He had dried up the ocean of the saṃśaptaka-s with the rays of his weapons. Pāṇḍava now scorched the Kuru-s, like the sun at the destruction of a yuga.

उन्होंने अपने अस्त्र-शस्त्र की किरणों से संशप्तक सागर को सुखा दिया था। अब पांडवों ने युग के विनाश के समय सूर्य की भाँति कुरु-वंश को झुलसा दिया।

प्रददाह कुरून्सर्वानर्जुनः शस्त्रतेजसा युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि धूमकेतुरिवोत्थितः

All the Kuru-s were burnt by the energy of Arjuna's weapons, like a comet that has arisen and destroys all beings at the end of a yuga

अर्जुन के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों की शक्ति से सभी कुरु उसी प्रकार जल गये, जैसे एक धूमकेतु उत्पन्न होता है और युग के अंत में सभी प्राणियों को नष्ट कर देता है।

तेन बाणसहस्रौघैर्गजाश्वरथयोधिनः ताड्यमानाः क्षितिं जग्मुर्मुक्तशस्त्राः शरार्दिताः

Elephants, horses, rāṭha-s and warriors were struck by the thousands of arrows released by him and oppressed by these arrows, discarded their weapons and fell down on the ground.

उनके छोड़े गए हजारों बाणों से हाथी, घोड़े, रथ और योद्धा घायल हो गए और उन बाणों से पीड़ित होकर, अपने हथियार त्याग दिए और जमीन पर गिर पड़े।

केचिदार्तस्वरं चक्रुर्विनेदुरपरे पुनः पार्थबाणहताः केचिन्निपेतुर्विगतासवः

Some wailed in lamentation. Still others roared. Slain by Pārtha's arrows, some fell down, deprived of their lives.

कुछ लोग विलाप करते हुए रोने लगे। फिर भी अन्य लोग दहाड़ने लगे। पार्थ के बाणों से कुछ लोग मारे गये और अपने प्राणों से वंचित हो गये।

तेषामुत्पततां कांश्चित्पतितांश्च पराङ्मुखान् न जघानार्जुनो योधान्योधव्रतमनुस्मरन्

Remembering the vow of warriors, Arjuna did not kill the warriors who had fallen down, or were falling down, or were retreating.

योद्धाओं की प्रतिज्ञा को याद रखते हुए अर्जुन ने उन योद्धाओं को नहीं मारा जो गिर गये थे, या गिर रहे थे, या पीछे हट रहे थे।

ते विशीर्णरथाश्वेभाः प्रायशश्च पराङ्मुखाः कुरवः कर्ण कर्णेति हा हेति च विचुक्रुशुः

Most of the Kuru-s were shattered and, devoid of their chariots, were in retreat. They called upon Karṇa for protection.

अधिकांश कुरु टूट गये और अपने रथों से वंचित होकर पीछे हट गये। उन्होंने कर्ण से सुरक्षा की गुहार लगाई।

तमाधिरथिराक्रन्दं विज्ञाय शरणैषिणाम् मा भैष्टेति प्रतिश्रुत्य ययावभिमुखोऽर्जुनम्

On discerning the lamentation and the cries for refuge, Adhiratha's son assured them that they need not be frightened and advanced in Arjuna's direction.

विलाप और शरण के लिए पुकार को समझने पर अधिरथ के पुत्र ने उन्हें आश्वासन दिया कि उन्हें डरने की जरूरत नहीं है और अर्जुन की दिशा में आगे बढ़ें।

स भारतरथश्रेष्ठः सर्वभारतहर्षणः प्रादुश्चक्रे तदाग्नेयमस्त्रमस्त्रविदां वरः

He was foremost among all the Bhārata rāṭha-s and was the one who brought delight to all the Bhāratas. He was supreme among those who knew about weapons and he invoked the āgneya weapon.

वह सभी भरत रथों में अग्रणी थे और सभी भरतों को प्रसन्न करने वाले थे। वह हथियारों के बारे में जानने वालों में सर्वोच्च थे और उन्होंने आग्नेय हथियार का आह्वान किया था।

तस्य दीप्तशरौघस्य दीप्तचापधरस्य च शरौघाञ्शरजालेन विदुधाव धनंजयः अस्त्रमस्त्रेण संवार्य प्राणदद्विसृजञ्शरान्

A mās-s of blazing arrows was released by the one who wielded a blazing bow. But Dhanañjayā repulsed that mās-s of arrows with his net of arrows. Weapon was countered by weapon and these arrows preserved life.

धधकते हुए धनुषधारी ने एक मास धधकते हुए बाण छोड़े। लेकिन धनंजय ने अपने बाणों के जाल से उस मास बाणों को खदेड़ दिया। शस्त्र का प्रतिकार शस्त्र से होता था और इन बाणों से जीवन की रक्षा होती थी।

धृष्टद्युम्नश्च भीमश्च सात्यकिश्च महारथः विव्यधुः कर्णमासाद्य त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः

Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Bhīmā and mahāratha Sātyaki approached Karṇa and each pierced him with three swift arrows.

धृष्टद्युम्न, भीम और महारथ सात्यकि कर्ण के पास आये और प्रत्येक ने उसे तीन तीव्र बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

अर्जुनास्त्रं तु राधेयः संवार्य शरवृष्टिभिः तेषां त्रयाणां चापानि चिच्छेद विशिखैस्त्रिभिः

Rādheya countered Arjuna's weapon with his own shower of arrows. He then used three tufted arrows to sever the bows of those three.

राधेय ने अपने बाणों की वर्षा से अर्जुन के हथियार का प्रतिकार किया। फिर उसने उन तीनों के धनुषों को काटने के लिए तीन गुच्छेदार बाणों का उपयोग किया।

ते निकृत्तायुधाः शूरा निर्विषा भुजगा इव रथशक्तीः समुत्क्षिप्य भृशं सिंहा इवानदन्

With their weapons gone, those brave ones were like snakes without venom. They hurled javelins from their chariots and roared like lions.

अपने अस्त्र-शस्त्र नष्ट हो जाने पर वे वीर बिना जहर के साँपों के समान हो गये। उन्होंने अपने रथों से भाले फेंके और सिंहों की भाँति गरजने लगे।

ता भुजाग्रैर्महावेगा विसृष्टा भुजगोपमाः दीप्यमाना महाशक्त्यो जग्मुराधिरथिं प्रति

Those javelins hurled from their arms were immensely forceful. Those mighty javelins were like snakes and blazed. They descended towards the chariot of Adhiratha's son.

उनकी भुजाओं से फेंके गए भाले अत्यंत शक्तिशाली थे। वे शक्तिशाली भाले साँपों के समान और चमकते हुए थे। वे अधिरथ के पुत्र के रथ की ओर उतरे।

ता निकृत्य शितैर्बाणैस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः ननाद बलवान्कर्णः पार्थाय विसृजञ्शरान्

But Karṇa severed them with three swift arrows and powerfully shooting arrows at Pārtha, roared.

परन्तु कर्ण ने तीन तीव्र बाणों से उन्हें काट डाला और पार्थ पर शक्तिशाली बाण चलाकर गर्जना की।

अर्जुनश्चापि राधेयं विद्ध्वा सप्तभिराशुगैः कर्णादवरजं बाणैर्जघान निशितैस्त्रिभिः

Arjuna pierced Rādheya with seven swift arrows. With three sharp arrows, he then killed Karṇa's younger brother.

अर्जुन ने सात तीव्र बाणों से राधेय को घायल कर दिया। फिर उसने तीन तीखे बाणों से कर्ण के छोटे भाई को मार डाला।

ततः शत्रुंजयं हत्वा पार्थः षड्भिरजिह्मगैः जहार सद्यो भल्लेन विपाटस्य शिरो रथात्

Pārtha killed Śatruñjayā with six arrows. As Vipāṭha stood on his chariot, he severed his head with a broad-headed arrow.

पार्थ ने छह बाणों से शत्रुंजय को मार डाला। जैसे ही विपाथ अपने रथ पर खड़ा हुआ, उसने एक चौड़े सिर वाले बाण से उसका सिर काट दिया।

पश्यतां धार्तराष्ट्राणामेकेनैव किरीटिना प्रमुखे सूतपुत्रस्य सोदर्या निहतास्त्रयः

While the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra looked on, Kirīṭī single-handedly killed the three, who were foremost among the brothers of the son of the sūta.

जब धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र देखते रह गए, किरीटी ने अकेले ही उन तीनों को मार डाला, जो सूत के पुत्र के भाइयों में सबसे प्रमुख थे।

ततो भीमः समुत्पत्य स्वरथाद्वैनतेयवत् वरासिना कर्णपक्षाञ्जघान दश पञ्च च

Bhīmā leapt down from his chariot, like Vinatā's son. With a supreme sword, he killed the fifteen who were guarding Karṇa's flank.

भीम विनता के पुत्र की तरह अपने रथ से नीचे कूद पड़े। उसने एक सर्वोच्च तलवार से उन पंद्रह लोगों को मार डाला जो कर्ण के पार्श्व की रक्षा कर रहे थे।

पुनः स्वरथमास्थाय धनुरादाय चापरम् विव्याध दशभिः कर्णं सूतमश्वांश्च पञ्चभिः

He then again ascended his chariot and grasped another bow. He pierced Karṇa with ten arrows and his charioteer and horses with five.

वह फिर अपने रथ पर चढ़ गया और दूसरा धनुष पकड़ लिया। उन्होंने दस बाणों से कर्ण को तथा पाँच बाणों से उसके सारथी तथा घोड़ों को घायल कर दिया।

धृष्टद्युम्नोऽप्यसिवरं चर्म चादाय भास्वरम् जघान चन्द्रवर्माणं बृहत्क्षत्रं च पौरवम्

Dhṛṣṭadyumna grasped a supreme sword and a lustrous shield. With these, he killed Chandravarma and Paurava Bṛhatkṣatra.

धृष्टद्युम्न के पास एक सर्वोच्च तलवार और एक चमकदार ढाल थी। इनसे उसने चन्द्रवर्मा और पौरव बृहत्क्षत्र का वध कर दिया।

ततः स्वरथमास्थाय पाञ्चाल्योऽन्यच्च कार्मुकम् आदाय कर्णं विव्याध त्रिसप्तत्या नदन्रणे

Pāñcāla then ascended his chariot and grasped another bow. In that battle, he pierced Karṇa with seventy-three arrows and roared.

फिर पंचाल अपने रथ पर चढ़े और दूसरा धनुष उठाया। उस युद्ध में उन्होंने कर्ण को तिहत्तर बाणों से घायल कर दिया और गर्जना की।

शैनेयोऽप्यन्यदादाय धनुरिन्द्रायुधद्युति सूतपुत्रं चतुःषष्ट्या विद्ध्वा सिंह इवानदत्

Śini's descendant grasped another bow that was like Indra's weapon in its radiance. He pierced the sūta's son with sixty-four arrows and roared like a lion.

शिनि के वंशज ने एक और धनुष पकड़ लिया जो अपनी चमक में इंद्र के हथियार के समान था। उन्होंने सूतपुत्र को चौसठ बाणों से घायल कर दिया और सिंह के समान गर्जना करने लगे।

भल्लभ्यां साधुमुक्ताभ्यां छित्त्वा कर्णस्य कार्मुकम् पुनः कर्णं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत्

With two broad-headed arrows that were released well, he severed Karṇa's bow. He again pierced Karṇa in the arms and the chest with three arrows.

उन्होंने अच्छी तरह छोड़े गये दो चौड़े सिरों वाले बाणों से कर्ण का धनुष काट डाला। उसने पुनः तीन बाणों से कर्ण की भुजाओं और छाती को घायल कर दिया।

ततो दुर्योधनो द्रोणो राजा चैव जयद्रथः निमज्जमानं राधेयमुज्जह्रुः सात्यकार्णवात्

Rādheya was about to be submerged in the ocean that Sātyaki represented. At this, Duryodhana, Droṇa and King Jayadratha rescued him.

राधेय उस सागर में डूबने वाली थी जिसका प्रतिनिधित्व सात्यकि ने किया था। इस पर दुर्योधन, द्रोण और राजा जयद्रथ ने उसे बचाया।

धृष्टद्युम्नश्च भीमश्च सौभद्रोऽर्जुन एव च नकुलः सहदेवश्च सात्यकिं जुगुपू रणे

Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Bhīmā, Subhadrā's son, Arjuna himself, Nākula and Sahadeva began to protect Sātyaki in that battle.

धृष्टद्युम्न, भीम, सुभद्रा के पुत्र, स्वयं अर्जुन, नकुल और सहदेव उस युद्ध में सात्यकि की रक्षा करने लगे।

एवमेष महारौद्रः क्षयार्थं सर्वधन्विनाम् तावकानां परेषां च त्यक्त्वा प्राणानभूद्रणः

Thus the extremely terrible battle between those on your side and that of the enemy raged. It was destructive of all archers. They were prepared to give up their lives.

इस प्रकार आपके पक्ष और शत्रु पक्ष के बीच अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध छिड़ गया। यह सभी धनुर्धारियों के लिए विनाशकारी था। वे अपनी जान देने के लिए तैयार थे।

पदातिरथनागाश्वैर्गजाश्वरथपत्तयः रथिनो नागपत्त्यश्वै रथपत्ती रथद्विपैः

Infantry, chariots, elephants and horses fought with elephants, horses, chariots and infantry. Chariots fought with elephants and infantry, chariots fought with infantry and chariots fought with elephants.

पैदल सेना, रथ, हाथी और घोड़े हाथी, घोड़े, रथ और पैदल सेना से लड़े। रथ हाथियों और पैदल सेना से लड़े, रथ पैदल सेना से लड़े और रथ हाथियों से लड़े।

अश्वैरश्वा गजैर्नागा रथिनो रथिभिः सह संसक्ताः समदृश्यन्त पत्तयश्चापि पत्तिभिः

Horses fought with horses, elephants with elephants and chariots with chariots. Infantry was seen to be engaged with infantry.

घोड़े घोड़ों से, हाथी हाथियों से और रथ रथों से लड़ने लगे। पैदल सेना को पैदल सेना के साथ संलग्न देखा गया।

एवं सुकलिलं युद्धमासीत्क्रव्यादहर्षणम् महद्भिस्तैरभीतानां यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम्

Thus did that extremely fierce battle continue and it caused delight to flesh-eating creatures. Those great warriors were without fear and this extended Yāma's kingdom.

इस प्रकार वह अत्यंत भयंकर युद्ध चलता रहा और उससे मांसभक्षी प्राणियों को प्रसन्नता हुई। वे महान योद्धा निडर थे और इससे यम का साम्राज्य बढ़ गया।

ततो हता नररथवाजिकुञ्जरै;रनेकशो द्विपरथवाजिपत्तयः गजैर्गजा रथिभिरुदायुधा रथा; हयैर्हयाः पत्तिगणैश्च पत्तयः

Many men, rāṭha-s, horses and elephants were killed there by elephants, rāṭha-s, horses and infantry. Elephants were killed by elephants, rāṭha-s by armed rāṭha-s, horses by horses and large numbers of infantry by infantry.

वहाँ हाथियों, रथों, घोड़ों और पैदल सेना द्वारा बहुत से आदमी, रथ-गाड़ियाँ, घोड़े और हाथी मारे गए। हाथियों को हाथियों ने, रथों को सशस्त्र रथों ने, घोड़ों को घोड़ों ने और बड़ी संख्या में पैदल सैनिकों को पैदल सेना ने मार डाला।

रथैर्द्विपा द्विरदवरैर्महाहया; हयैर्नरा वररथिभिश्च वाजिनः निरस्तजिह्वादशनेक्षणाः क्षितौ; क्षयं गताः प्रमथितवर्मभूषणाः

Elephants were slain by rāṭha-s, giant horses by the best of elephants, men by horses and horses by the supreme of rāṭha-s. Tongues were lolling out. Teeth and eyes were gouged out. Armour and ornaments were shattered. Destroyed, they fell down on the ground.

हाथियों को रथियों ने, विशाल घोड़ों को सर्वश्रेष्ठ हाथियों ने, मनुष्यों को घोड़ों ने और घोड़ों को रथियों ने मार डाला। जीभें लपलपा रही थीं. दांत और आंखें निकाल ली गईं। कवच और आभूषण टूट गये। वे नष्ट होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़े।

तथा परैर्बहुकरणैर्वरायुधै;र्हता गताः प्रतिभयदर्शनाः क्षितिम् विपोथिता हयगजपादताडिता; भृशाकुला रथखुरनेमिभिर्हताः

There were many others who were struck down by the best of warriors. They fell down on the ground with fearful visages. They were mangled and crushed by the feet of horses and elephants. They were severely hurt and wounded by the wheels of chariots and hooves.

ऐसे कई अन्य लोग भी थे जिन्हें सर्वश्रेष्ठ योद्धाओं ने मार गिराया था। वे भयभीत दृष्टि से भूमि पर गिर पड़े। वे घोड़ों और हाथियों के पैरों से क्षत-विक्षत और कुचले गए थे। रथों के पहियों और खुरों से उन्हें बहुत चोट लगी और वे घायल हो गये।

प्रमोदने श्वापदपक्षिरक्षसां; जनक्षये वर्तति तत्र दारुणे महाबलास्ते कुपिताः परस्परं; निषूदयन्तः प्रविचेरुरोजसा

It brought delight to carnivorous beasts, birds and flesh-eaters. There was a terrible carnage of people there. Those extremely strong ones were angry. Using the utmost of their energy, they sought to kill each other.

इससे मांसाहारी जानवरों, पक्षियों और मांस खाने वालों को खुशी मिली। वहाँ लोगों का भयंकर नरसंहार हुआ। वे अत्यंत बलवान क्रोधित थे। अपनी पूरी शक्ति का उपयोग करते हुए, उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को मारने की कोशिश की।

ततो बले भृशलुलिते परस्परं; निरीक्षमाणे रुधिरौघसंप्लुते दिवाकरेऽस्तंगिरिमास्थिते शनै;रुभे प्रयाते शिबिराय भारत

When the strength of both sides was severely diminished, they glanced towards each other, their bodies drenched with blood. The sun was stationed above the mountain on which it sets. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The armies retreated to their respective camps.

जब दोनों पक्षों की ताकत बहुत कम हो गई, तो उन्होंने एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा, उनके शरीर खून से लथपथ थे। सूर्य उस पर्वत के ऊपर स्थित था जिस पर वह अस्त होता था। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सेनाएँ अपने-अपने शिविरों में पीछे हट गईं।
