धृतराष्ट्र उवाच महानपनयः सूत ममैवात्र विशेषतः स इदानीमनुप्राप्तो मन्ये संजय शोचतः

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O sūta! O Sañjaya! Though I sorrow, I think that this great calamity that has now confronted us is especially because of what I did.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: हे सूत! हे संजय! हालाँकि मुझे दुख है, मुझे लगता है कि यह बड़ी विपत्ति जो अब हमारे सामने आई है, विशेष रूप से मेरे द्वारा किए गए कार्यों के कारण है।

यद्गतं तद्गतमिति ममासीन्मनसि स्थितम् इदानीमत्र किं कार्यं प्रकरिष्यामि संजय

But so far, I had the belief that what has happened, has happened. O Sañjaya! What should I do now?

लेकिन अब तक मुझे यही विश्वास था कि जो हो गया, हो गया. हे संजय! अब मैं क्या करूं?

यथा त्वेष क्षयो वृत्तो ममापनयसंभवः वीराणां तन्ममाचक्ष्व स्थिरीभूतोऽस्मि संजय

Tell me about the destruction of heroes that is going on. O Sañjaya! I have pacified myself. Tell me about it.

जो वीरों का विनाश हो रहा है, उसके बारे में बताओ? हे संजय! मैंने खुद को शांत कर लिया है. मुझे इसके बारे में बताओ.

संजय उवाच कर्णभीमौ महाराज पराक्रान्तौ महाहवे बाणवर्षाण्यवर्षेतां वृष्टिमन्ताविवाम्बुदौ

Sañjaya replied: O great king! Karṇa and Bhīmā were both valorous. In that great battle, they showered down arrows, like rain pouring down from clouds.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: हे महान राजा! कर्ण और भीम दोनों वीर थे। उस महान युद्ध में उन्होंने बाणों की वर्षा की, जैसे बादलों से वर्षा हो रही हो।

भीमनामाङ्किता बाणाः स्वर्णपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः विविशुः कर्णमासाद्य भिन्दन्त इव जीवितम्

There were gold-tufted arrows that were sharpened on stone and marked with Bhīmā's name. These pierced Karṇa, as if penetrating his life.

वहाँ सोने के गुच्छे वाले तीर थे जिन्हें पत्थर पर धार दी गई थी और उन पर भीम का नाम अंकित था। इन्होंने कर्ण को इस प्रकार छेद दिया, मानो उसके प्राणों को भेद रहे हों।

तथैव कर्णनिर्मुक्तैः सविषैरिव पन्नगैः आकीर्यत रणे भीमः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

In that fashion, Bhīmā was struck in that battle by hundreds and thousands of arrows released by Karṇa and these were like venomous serpents.

उस प्रकार, भीम उस युद्ध में कर्ण द्वारा छोड़े गए सैकड़ों और हजारों बाणों से घायल हो गए थे और ये विषैले सांपों के समान थे।

तयोः शरैर्महाराज संपतद्भिः समन्ततः बभूव तव सैन्यानां संक्षोभः सागरोपमः

O great king! Those arrows descended in every direction and agitated the armies, which were like oceans.

हे महान राजा! उन बाणों ने सभी दिशाओं में जाकर समुद्र के समान सेनाओं को उत्तेजित कर दिया।

भीमचापच्युतैर्बाणैस्तव सैन्यमरिंदम अवध्यत चमूमध्ये घोरैराशीविषोपमैः

O scorcher of enemies! The arrows released from Bhīmā's bow were as terrible as virulent serpents and killed your soldiers in the midst of the army.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! भीम के धनुष से छूटे हुए बाण विषैले सर्पों के समान भयानक थे और उन्होंने सेना के बीच में ही आपके सैनिकों को मार डाला।

वारणैः पतितै राजन्वाजिभिश्च नरैः सह अदृश्यत मही कीर्णा वातनुन्नैर्द्रुमैरिव

O king! Elephants fell down and mixed with horses and men. They were seen to be strewn around on the ground, like trees shattered by a storm.

हे राजा! हाथी गिरकर घोड़ों और मनुष्यों से मिल गये। वे ज़मीन पर इधर-उधर बिखरे हुए दिख रहे थे, जैसे तूफ़ान से टूटे हुए पेड़ हों।

ते वध्यमानाः समरे भीमचापच्युतैः शरैः प्राद्रवंस्तावका योधाः किमेतदिति चाब्रुवन्

In that battle, they were slain by the arrows released from Bhīmā's bow. Your warriors were driven away, exclaiming, "What is this?"

उस युद्ध में भीम के धनुष से छूटे बाणों से वे मारे गये। आपके योद्धाओं को यह कहते हुए भगा दिया गया, "यह क्या है?"

ततो व्युदस्तं तत्सैन्यं सिन्धुसौवीरकौरवम् प्रोत्सारितं महावेगैः कर्णपाण्डवयोः शरैः

The great force of arrows released by Karṇa and Pāṇḍava made the soldiers from Sindhu-s, Sauvīra-s and Kaurava-s move a great distance away.

कर्ण और पांडवों द्वारा छोड़े गए बाणों की महान शक्ति ने सिंधु, सौवीर और कौरवों के सैनिकों को काफी दूर तक खिसका दिया।

ते शरातुरभूयिष्ठा हताश्वनरवाहनाः उत्सृज्य कर्णं भीमं च प्राद्रवन्सर्वतोदिशम्

Many horses, men and mounts were afflicted and slain by the arrows. They abandoned Karṇa and Bhīmā and fled in all the directions, saying,

बहुत से घोड़े, मनुष्य और घुड़सवार बाणों से पीड़ित होकर मारे गये। उन्होंने कर्ण और भीम को त्याग दिया और यह कहते हुए सभी दिशाओं में भाग गए,

नूनं पार्थार्थमेवास्मान्मोहयन्ति दिवौकसः यत्कर्णभीमप्रभवैर्वध्यते नो बलं शरैः

"There is no doubt that, for the sake of the Pārtha-s, the residents of heaven are confounding us, since the force of Karṇa and Bhīmā's arrows are killing our troops."

"इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि, पार्थ-स की खातिर, स्वर्ग के निवासी हमें भ्रमित कर रहे हैं, क्योंकि कर्ण की ताकत और भीम के तीर हमारे सैनिकों को मार रहे हैं।"

एवं ब्रुवन्तो योधास्ते तावका भयपीडिताः शरपातं समुत्सृज्य स्थिता युद्धदिदृक्षवः

Having said this, the warriors on your side were afflicted by fear. They moved away from the range of the arrows and stationed themselves, wishing to see the encounter.

ऐसा कहकर आपके पक्ष के योद्धा भय से पीड़ित हो गये। वे मुठभेड़ देखने की इच्छा से तीरों की सीमा से दूर चले गए और खुद को तैनात कर लिया।

ततः प्रावर्तत नदी घोररूपा महाहवे बभूव च विशेषेण भीरूणां भयवर्धिनी

In that great battle, a river, terrible in form, began to flow. It was beautiful and in particular, increased the fear of cowards.

उस महान युद्ध में भयानक रूप वाली एक नदी बहने लगी। यह सुन्दर था और विशेषकर कायरों के भय को बढ़ा देता था।

वारणाश्वमनुष्याणां रुधिरौघसमुद्भवा संवृता गतसत्त्वैश्च मनुष्यगजवाजिभिः

This was created from the blood of elephants, horses and men. It covered the bodies of men, elephants and horses, who had lost their lives.

इसका निर्माण हाथियों, घोड़ों और मनुष्यों के रक्त से हुआ था। इसने उन मनुष्यों, हाथियों और घोड़ों के शरीरों को ढक दिया, जिन्होंने अपनी जान गंवा दी थी।

सानुकर्षपताकैश्च द्विपाश्वरथभूषणैः स्यन्दनैरपविद्धैश्च भग्नचक्राक्षकूबरैः

Housings, flags, elephants, horses and chariots were like ornaments. There were shattered chariots and fragmented wheels, axles and yokes.

आवास, ध्वज, हाथी, घोड़े और रथ आभूषणों के समान थे। वहाँ टूटे हुए रथ और खंडित पहिए, धुरियाँ और जुए थे।

जातरूपपरिष्कारैर्धनुर्भिः सुमहाधनैः सुवर्णपुङ्खैरिषुभिर्नाराचैश्च सहस्रशः

There were extremely expensive bows that were decorated with gold. There were gold-tufted arrows and thousands of iron arrows.

वहाँ अत्यंत बहुमूल्य धनुष थे जो सोने से सजाये गये थे। वहाँ सोने के जटित तीर और हजारों लोहे के तीर थे।

कर्णपाण्डवनिर्मुक्तैर्निर्मुक्तैरिव पन्नगैः प्रासतोमरसंघातैः खड्गैश्च सपरश्वधैः

These were released by Karṇa and Pāṇḍava and were like snakes that had cast off their skins.

ये कर्ण और पांडव द्वारा छोड़े गए थे और उन साँपों की तरह थे जिन्होंने अपनी खाल उतार दी थी।

सुवर्णविकृतैश्चापि गदामुसलपट्टिशैः वज्रैश्च विविधाकारैः शक्तिभिः परिघैरपि शतघ्नीभिश्च चित्राभिर्बभौ भारत मेदिनी

There were masses of lances, spears, swords, battleaxes, clubs, maces, spikes, vajra-s of different types, javelins, bludgeons and śataghnī-s.

वहां बड़ी संख्या में भाले, भाले, तलवारें, फरसे, गदाएं, गदाएं, कीलें, विभिन्न प्रकार के वज्र, भाले, डंडे और शतघ्नी मौजूद थे।

कनकाङ्गदकेयूरैः कुण्डलैर्मणिभिः शुभैः तनुत्रैः सतलत्रैश्च हारैर्निष्कैश्च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They were decorated with gold and made the ground beautiful. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There were golden bracelets, armlets, sparkling and bejewelled earrings, body armour, palm-guards and golden necklaces.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्हें सोने से सजाया गया और ज़मीन को खूबसूरत बनाया गया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वहाँ सुनहरे कंगन, बाजूबंद, चमचमाते और रत्नजटित झुमके, शरीर कवच, ताड़-रक्षक और सुनहरे हार थे।

वस्त्रैश्छत्रैश्च विध्वस्तैश्चामरव्यजनैरपि गजाश्वमनुजैर्भिन्नैः शस्त्रैः स्यन्दनभूषणैः

There were garments and umbrellas and shattered whisks and fans. There were elephants, horses and men who were mangled by weapons and ornaments from chariots.

वहाँ कपड़े और छाते थे और टूटे हुए मूंछें और पंखे थे। वहाँ हाथी, घोड़े और मनुष्य थे जो हथियारों और रथों के आभूषणों से घायल हो गये थे।

तैस्तैश्च विविधैर्भावैस्तत्र तत्र वसुंधरा पतितैरपविद्धैश्च संबभौ द्यौरिव ग्रहैः

Shattered and broken, they were strewn around here and there on the ground, making it as beautiful as the sky with the planets.

बिखरे और टूटे हुए, वे जमीन पर इधर-उधर बिखरे हुए थे, जिससे यह ग्रहों के साथ आकाश जैसा सुंदर हो गया था।

अचिन्त्यमद्भुतं चैव तयोः कर्मातिमानुषम् दृष्ट्वा चारणसिद्धानां विस्मयः समपद्यत

These superhuman deeds were extraordinary and could not be thought of. On beholding these, the cāraṇa-s and the siddha-s were overcome by wonder.

ये अलौकिक कार्य असाधारण थे और इनके बारे में सोचा भी नहीं जा सकता था। इन्हें देखकर चारण और सिद्ध आश्चर्य में पड़ गये।

अग्नेर्वायुसहायस्य गतिः कक्ष इवाहवे आसीद्भीमसहायस्य रौद्रमाधिरथेर्गतम् निपातितध्वजरथं हतवाजिनरद्विपम्

Like that, aided by Bhīmā and engaging with him, Adhiratha's son fiercely brought down standards and chariots and slew horses, elephants and men.

उसी तरह, भीम की सहायता से और उसके साथ उलझकर, अधिरथ के पुत्र ने भयंकर रूप से ध्वज और रथों को गिरा दिया और घोड़ों, हाथियों और मनुष्यों को मार डाला।

गजाभ्यां संप्रयुक्ताभ्यामासीन्नडवनं यथा तथाभूतं महत्सैन्यमासीद्भारत संयुगे विमर्दः कर्णभीमाभ्यामासीच्च परमो रणे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! As they engaged with each other in that battle, they were like a couple of elephants amidst a clump of reeds. As they clashed in that supreme battle, Karṇa and Bhīmā, caused carnage in that great army.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब वे उस युद्ध में एक-दूसरे के साथ उलझे हुए थे, तो वे सरकंडों के झुरमुट के बीच हाथियों के जोड़े की तरह थे। जब कर्ण और भीम उस परम युद्ध में भिड़े, तो उन्होंने उस विशाल सेना में नरसंहार कर दिया।
