संजय उवाच ते तथैव महाराज दंशिता रणमूर्धनि संध्यागतं सहस्रांशुमादित्यमुपतस्थिरे

Sañjaya said: O great king! It was morning and with its one thousand rays, the sun arose.

संजय ने कहा: हे महान राजा! सुबह हो चुकी थी और सूरज अपनी एक हजार किरणों के साथ उग आया।

उदिते तु सहस्रांशौ तप्तकाञ्चनसप्रभे प्रकाशितेषु लोकेषु पुनर्युद्धमवर्तत

The one with the thousand rays arose and its complexion was like that of molten gold. In the forefront of the battle, the armoured ones worshipped it and as the world became illuminated, the battle commenced again.

सहस्र किरणों वाला वह उत्पन्न हुआ और उसका रंग पिघले हुए सोने के समान था। युद्ध में सबसे आगे बख्तरबंद लोगों ने इसकी पूजा की और जैसे ही दुनिया रोशन हुई, युद्ध फिर से शुरू हो गया।

द्वंद्वानि यानि तत्रासन्संसक्तानि पुरोदयात् तान्येवाभ्युदिते सूर्ये समसज्जन्त भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Those who were engaged with each other earlier, continued to fight with each other after the sun arose.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जो लोग पहले एक-दूसरे से उलझे हुए थे, सूरज उगने के बाद भी एक-दूसरे से लड़ते रहे।

रथैर्हया हयैर्नागाः पादाताश्चापि कुञ्जरैः हया हयैः समाजग्मुः पादाताश्च पदातिभिः संसक्ताश्च वियुक्ताश्च योधाः संन्यपतन्रणे

Rāṭha-s fought with horse riders, horse riders with elephant riders, infantry with elephants, horses clashed with horses and foot soldiers with foot soldiers. In that battle, the warriors attacked, sometimes together and sometimes separately.

रथ-सैनिक घुड़सवारों से, घुड़सवार हाथी सवारों से, पैदल सेना हाथियों से, घोड़े घोड़ों से और पैदल सैनिक पैदल सैनिकों से लड़ते थे। उस युद्ध में योद्धा कभी एक साथ तो कभी अलग-अलग आक्रमण करते थे।

ते रात्रौ कृतकर्माणः श्रान्ताः सूर्यस्य तेजसा क्षुत्पिपासापरीताङ्गा विसंज्ञा बहवोऽभवन्

They were exhausted because of the deeds they had performed during the night. The sun's energy made them hungry and thirsty. Many of them lost all sensation in their limbs.

वे रात के समय किये गये कार्यों के कारण थक गये थे। सूर्य की ऊर्जा ने उन्हें भूखा और प्यासा बना दिया। उनमें से कई लोगों के अंगों की सारी संवेदनाएं खत्म हो गईं।

शङ्खभेरीमृदङ्गानां कुञ्जराणां च गर्जताम् विस्फारितविकृष्टानां कार्मुकाणां च कूजताम्

There was the sound of conch shells, drums and battle drums, together with the trumpeting of elephants. There was the sound of bows being stretched and drawn.

हाथियों की चिंघाड़ के साथ-साथ शंख, ढोल और युद्ध नगाड़ों की आवाज भी गूंज रही थी। धनुषों के तानने और खिंचने की आवाज आ रही थी।

शब्दः समभवद्राजन्दिविस्पृग्भरतर्षभ द्रवतां च पदातीनां शस्त्राणां विनिपात्यताम्

O king! O bull among the Bhārata lineage! The sound that was generated seemed to touch the sky. The foot soldiers fled and weapons descended.

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश में बैल! जो ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुई वह आकाश को छूती हुई प्रतीत हुई। पैदल सैनिक भाग गये और हथियार उतर आये।

हयानां हेषतां चैव रथानां च निवर्तताम् क्रोशतां गर्जतां चैव तदासीत्तुमुलं महत्

The horses neighed and the chariots rattled. There were angry roars and there was a great and tumultuous sound.

घोड़े हिनहिनाने लगे और रथ खड़खड़ाने लगे। वहाँ क्रोध भरी गर्जनाएँ हो रही थीं और बड़ी और कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि हो रही थी।

विवृद्धस्तुमुलः शब्दो द्यामगच्छन्महास्वनः नानायुधनिकृत्तानां चेष्टतामातुरः स्वनः

That loud and fierce noise spread and reached up into the sky. As warriors were brought down, there were woes of lamentation.

वह तीव्र और भयंकर ध्वनि फैलकर आकाश तक पहुँच गयी। जैसे ही योद्धाओं को नीचे लाया गया, विलाप की स्थिति उत्पन्न हो गई।

भूमावश्रूयत महांस्तदासीत्कृपणं महत् पततां पतितानां च पत्त्यश्वरथहस्तिनाम्

That great and piteous wail could be heard all over the ground. Foot soldiers, horses, chariots and elephants fell down, or were falling down.

वह महान और करुण विलाप पूरे मैदान में सुना जा सकता था। पैदल सैनिक, घोड़े, रथ और हाथी गिर पड़े, या गिर रहे थे।

तेषु सर्वेष्वनीकेषु व्यतिषक्तेष्वनेकशः स्वे स्वाञ्जघ्नुः परे स्वांश्च स्वे परांश्च परान्परे

All the battle formations clashed against each other and there was a general melee. Some killed those on their own side, as well as that of the enemy. Some engaged with their own side. Others engaged with the enemy.

सभी युद्ध संरचनाएँ एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गईं और सामान्य हाथापाई हुई। कुछ ने अपने पक्ष के लोगों को भी मार डाला, साथ ही शत्रु को भी। कुछ लोग अपनी-अपनी तरफ से लगे रहे. अन्य लोग शत्रु से उलझ गये।

वीरबाहुविसृष्टाश्च योधेषु च गजेषु च असयः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त वाससां नेजनेष्विव

Swords could be seen, hurled from the brave arms of warriors, or from the backs of elephants. They looked like garments amassed for washing.

योद्धाओं की बहादुर भुजाओं से या हाथियों की पीठ से फेंकी गई तलवारें देखी जा सकती थीं। वे धोने के लिए इकट्ठे किए गए कपड़ों की तरह लग रहे थे।

उद्यतप्रतिपिष्टानां खड्गानां वीरबाहुभिः स एव शब्दस्तद्रूपो वाससां निज्यतामिव

As they were raised up in the arms of brave warriors, the swords made a sound like that of garments being beaten at the time of washing.

जैसे ही वे वीर योद्धाओं की भुजाओं में उठे, उनकी तलवारों से ऐसी ध्वनि होने लगी जैसे धोते समय कपड़ों को पीटने से होती है।

अर्धासिभिस्तथा खड्गैस्तोमरैः सपरश्वधैः निकृष्टयुद्धं संसक्तं महदासीत्सुदारुणम्

There were daggers, swords, lances and battleaxes. They were used in that clash and there was a great and fearful sound.

वहाँ खंजर, तलवारें, भाले और फरसे थे। उस झड़प में इनका प्रयोग किया गया था और बड़ी भयानक आवाज आई थी.

गजाश्वकायप्रभवां नरदेहप्रवाहिनीम् शस्त्रमत्स्यसुसंपूर्णां मांसशोणितकर्दमाम्

The brave ones created a river out of the blood of elephants and horses and the bodies of men flowed along. It was full of fish in the form of weapons. The flesh and blood was the mire.

वीरों ने हाथियों और घोड़ों के खून से एक नदी बनाई और मनुष्यों के शव उसमें बहने लगे। इसमें हथियारों के रूप में मछलियाँ भरी हुई थीं। मांस और खून ही कीचड़ था.

आर्तनादस्वनवतीं पताकावस्त्रफेनिलाम् नदीं प्रावर्तयन्वीराः परलोकप्रवाहिनीम्

The lamentations were the roar and the flags and garments were the foam. It flowed along to the world of the hereafter.

विलाप गर्जना थे और झंडे और वस्त्र झाग थे। यह परलोक की दुनिया में बह गया।

शरशक्त्यर्दिताः क्लान्ता रात्रिमूढाल्पचेतसः विष्टभ्य सर्वगात्राणि व्यतिष्ठन्गजवाजिनः संशुष्कवदना वीराः शिरोभिश्चारुकुण्डलैः

They were afflicted by arrows and spears. They were exhausted from the night. They were confused and senseless. All their limbs were motionless. The elephants and horses were weak. The faces of the brave ones were dry, though their heads were decorated with beautiful earrings.

वे तीरों और भालों से पीड़ित हो गये। वे रात से थक गये थे। वे भ्रमित और संवेदनहीन थे। उनके सभी अंग गतिहीन थे। हाथी और घोड़े कमज़ोर थे। वीरों के मुख सूखे हुए थे, यद्यपि उनके मस्तक सुन्दर कुण्डलों से सुशोभित थे।

युद्धोपकरणैश्चान्यैस्तत्र तत्र प्रकाशितैः क्रव्यादसंघैराकीर्णं मृतैरर्धमृतैरपि नासीद्रथपथस्तत्र सर्वमायोधनं प्रति

Here and there, diverse implements of war could be seen. The place was full of carnivorous beings and those who were dead and dying. There was no space for the chariots or the warriors to paś-s.

यत्र-तत्र युद्ध के विविध उपकरण देखे जा सकते थे। वह स्थान मांसाहारी प्राणियों और मरे हुए और मरणासन्न लोगों से भरा हुआ था। वहाँ रथों या योद्धाओं के लिए पैर रखने की कोई जगह नहीं थी।

मज्जत्सु चक्रेषु रथान्सत्त्वमास्थाय वाजिनः कथंचिदवहञ्श्रान्ता वेपमानाः शरार्दिताः कुलसत्त्वबलोपेता वाजिनो वारणोपमाः

The wheels of chariots got stuck and the horses which bore them depended on their spirits. But some of them were extremely tired. The horses trembled and were afflicted by the arrows, though they were spirited and born in noble lineages, possessing strength and sizes like those of elephants.

रथों के पहिये जाम हो गये और उन्हें ढोने वाले घोड़े अपने हौसलों पर निर्भर हो गये। लेकिन उनमें से कुछ बेहद थके हुए थे। घोड़े काँप रहे थे और तीरों से पीड़ित थे, हालाँकि वे उत्साही थे और कुलीन वंश में पैदा हुए थे, हाथियों की तरह ताकत और आकार रखते थे।

विह्वलं तत्समुद्भ्रान्तं सभयं भारतातुरम् बलमासीत्तदा सर्वमृते द्रोणार्जुनावुभौ

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! At that time, everyone was distracted and agitated. With the exception of Droṇa and Arjuna, both armies were overtaken by fright.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस समय सभी लोग विचलित एवं उद्वेलित थे। द्रोण और अर्जुन को छोड़कर, दोनों सेनाएँ भय से ग्रस्त थीं।

तावेवास्तां निलयनं तावार्तायनमेव च तावेवान्ये समासाद्य जग्मुर्वैवस्वतक्षयम्

These two became the refuges of the distressed ones on their respective sides. Others encountered them and departed for Vaivasvata's eternal abode.

ये दोनों अपनी-अपनी ओर से दुःखियों के आश्रयदाता बने। अन्य लोगों ने उनका सामना किया और वैवस्वत के शाश्वत निवास के लिए प्रस्थान किया।

आविग्नमभवत्सर्वं कौरवाणां महद्बलम् पाञ्चालानां च संसक्तं न प्राज्ञायत किंचन

The entire large army of the Kaurava-s was shattered. The Pāñcāla-s gathered together and one could not distinguish one from the other.

कौरवों की पूरी विशाल सेना बिखर गयी। पंचाल एक साथ एकत्र हुए और एक को दूसरे से अलग नहीं किया जा सका।

अन्तकाक्रीडसदृशे भीरूणां भयवर्धने पृथिव्यां राजवंशानामुत्थिते महति क्षये

That fierce carnage increased the fear of those who were cowards. O king! There was a great destruction and the earth was like a cremation ground.

उस भीषण नरसंहार से उन लोगों का भय और बढ़ गया जो कायर थे। हे राजा! भयंकर विनाश हुआ और पृथ्वी श्मशान भूमि के समान हो गयी।

न तत्र कर्णं न द्रोणं नार्जुनं न युधिष्ठिरम् न भीमसेनं न यमौ न पाञ्चाल्यं न सात्यकिम्

Neither Karṇa, nor Droṇa, nor Arjuna, nor Yudhiṣṭhira, nor Bhīmasena, nor the twins, nor Pāñcāla, nor Sātyaki,

न कर्ण, न द्रोण, न अर्जुन, न युधिष्ठिर, न भीमसेन, न जुड़वाँ, न पंचाल, न सात्यकि,

न च दुःशासनं द्रौणिं न दुर्योधनसौबलौ न कृपं मद्रराजं वा कृतवर्माणमेव च

nor Duḥśāsana,nor Droṇa's son,nor Duryodhana,nor Saubala,nor Kṛpa, nor the king of Madra, nor Kritavarma,

न दुःशासन, न द्रोणपुत्र, न दुर्योधन, न सौबल, न कृप, न मद्रराज, न कृतवर्मा,

न चान्यान्नैव चात्मानं न क्षितिं न दिशस्तथा पश्याम राजन्संसक्तान्सैन्येन रजसावृतान्

nor the others, not even one's own self, the earth or the directions - none of these could not be seen there.

न दूसरों को, न स्वयं को, न पृथ्वी को, न दिशाओं को - इनमें से कुछ भी वहाँ दिखाई नहीं देता था।

संभ्रान्ते तुमुले घोरे रजोमेघे समुत्थिते द्वितीयामिव संप्राप्ताममन्यन्त निशां तदा

O king! When the soldiers clashed, everything was covered in dust. A fierce and terrible cloud of dust arose. We thought that a second night had arrived there.

हे राजा! जब सैनिक भिड़े तो सब कुछ धूल से ढका हुआ था। धूल का भयंकर एवं भयानक बादल उठ खड़ा हुआ। हमें लगा कि वहां दूसरी रात आ गई है.

न ज्ञायन्ते कौरवेया न पाञ्चाला न पाण्डवाः न दिशो न दिवं नोर्वीं न समं विषमं तथा

One could not distinguish the Kauraveya-s from the Pāñcāla-s and the Pāṇḍava-s. The directions, the sky, heaven and earth and plain and uneven terrain could not be distinguished.

कोई कौरवों को पंचालों और पांडवों से अलग नहीं कर सका। दिशाएँ, आकाश, स्वर्ग और पृथ्वी तथा समतल और ऊबड़-खाबड़ भूभाग को पहचाना नहीं जा सका।

हस्तसंस्पर्शमापन्नान्परान्वाप्यथ वा स्वकान् न्यपातयंस्तदा युद्धे नराः स्म विजयैषिणः

In that battle, desiring victory, men brought down others through the touch of the hand, without differentiating the enemy from those on one's own side.

उस युद्ध में, विजय की इच्छा से, लोगों ने अपने पक्ष के शत्रुओं में अंतर किए बिना, हाथ के स्पर्श से दूसरों को नीचे गिरा दिया।

उद्धूतत्वात्तु रजसः प्रसेकाच्छोणितस्य च प्रशशाम रजो भौमं शीघ्रत्वादनिलस्य च

However, a wind arose and dispelled the dust, which was also pacified through the sprinkling of blood. The dust that arose from the earth was pacified and was soon driven away by the wind.

हालाँकि, एक हवा उठी और धूल को उड़ा दिया, जिसे रक्त के छिड़काव के माध्यम से भी शांत किया गया। धरती से उठी धूल शांत हो गई और जल्द ही हवा से उड़ा दी गई।

With blood flowing from their wounded limbs, the elephants, horses, warriors, rāṭha-s and foot soldiers there looked as beautiful as a grove of pārijāta blossoms.

अपने घायल अंगों से खून बहते हुए, हाथी, घोड़े, योद्धा, रथ-और पैदल सैनिक वहां पारिजात फूलों के बगीचे की तरह सुंदर लग रहे थे।

ततो दुर्योधनः कर्णो द्रोणो दुःशासनस्तथा पाण्डवैः समसज्जन्त चतुर्भिश्चतुरो रथाः

Duryodhana, Karṇa, Droṇa and Duḥśāsana—these four rāṭha-s clashed against four on the Pāṇḍava side.

दुर्योधन, कर्ण, द्रोण और दुःशासन - ये चार रथ पांडव पक्ष के चार रथों से भिड़ गए।

दुर्योधनः सह भ्रात्रा यमाभ्यां समसज्जत वृकोदरेण राधेयो भारद्वाजेन चार्जुनः

Duryodhana and his brother clashed against the twins, Vṛkodara against Rādheya and Bhāradvāja's son against Arjuna.

दुर्योधन और उसका भाई जुड़वाँ बच्चों से, वृकोदर राधेय से और भारद्वाज पुत्र अर्जुन से भिड़ गये।

तद्घोरं महदाश्चर्यं सर्वे प्रैक्षन्समन्ततः रथर्षभाणामुग्राणां संनिपातममानुषम्

Everyone else looked on at that great and terrible wonder. It was a fierce and superhuman encounter between those bulls among rāṭha-s.

बाकी सभी लोग उस महान और भयानक आश्चर्य को देखते रहे। यह रथ-सांडों के बीच एक भयंकर और अलौकिक मुठभेड़ थी।

रथमार्गैर्विचित्रैश्च विचित्ररथसंकुलम् अपश्यन्रथिनो युद्धं विचित्रं चित्रयोधिनाम्

Their chariots traversed wonderful paths. The chariots executed diverse motions. Those warriors were colourful in fighting and all the warriors witnessed that wonderful battle.

उनके रथ अद्भुत पथों पर चलते थे। रथों ने विविध गतियाँ निष्पादित कीं। वे योद्धा लड़ने में रंगीन थे और सभी योद्धाओं ने उस अद्भुत युद्ध को देखा।

यतमानाः पराक्रान्ताः परस्परजिगीषवः जीमूता इव घर्मान्ते शरवर्षैरवाकिरन्

They were brave and made endeavours to vanquish each other. They showered down arrows, like a cloud at the end of summer.

वे बहादुर थे और एक दूसरे को परास्त करने का प्रयास करते थे। उन्होंने ग्रीष्म ऋतु के अंत में बादलों की भाँति तीरों की वर्षा की।

ते रथान्सूर्यसंकाशानास्थिताः पुरुषर्षभाः अशोभन्त यथा मेघाः शारदाः समुपस्थिताः

Those bulls among men were stationed on chariots that were as radiant as the sun. They were as beautiful as a mās-s of clouds during autumn.

वे मनुष्य बैल सूर्य के समान दीप्तिमान रथों पर तैनात थे। वे शरद् ऋतु के दौरान बादलों के झुंड के समान सुंदर थे।

स्पर्धिनस्ते महेष्वासाः कृतयत्ना धनुर्धराः अभ्यगच्छंस्तथान्योन्यं मत्ता गजवृषा इव

The great archers challenged each other. They made efforts in wielding their bows. They attacked each other, like crazy bull elephants.

महान धनुर्धरों ने एक दूसरे को चुनौती दी। उन्होंने अपने धनुष चलाने का प्रयास किया। वे पागल बैल हाथियों की तरह एक-दूसरे पर हमला करते थे।

न नूनं देहभेदोऽस्ति काले तस्मिन्समागते यत्र सर्वे न युगपद्व्यशीर्यन्त महारथाः

It is true that one does not discard one's body until the time has come, since those mahāratha-s were not simultaneously killed in that battle.

यह सत्य है कि समय आने तक कोई अपने शरीर का त्याग नहीं करता, क्योंकि उस युद्ध में वे महारथी एक साथ नहीं मारे गये थे।

बाहुभिश्चरणैश्छिन्नैः शिरोभिश्चारुकुण्डलैः कार्मुकैर्विशिखैः प्रासैः खड्गैः परशुपट्टिशैः

Arms and feet were severed and so were heads with beautiful earrings.

हाथ और पैर कटे हुए थे और सिर भी कटे हुए थे जिनमें सुंदर बालियाँ थीं।

नालीकक्षुरनाराचैर्नखरैः शक्तितोमरैः अन्यैश्च विविधाकारैर्धौतैः प्रहरणोत्तमैः

There were hollow arrows and razor-sharp arrows, iron arrows, nails, lances and javelins and many other kinds of sharp and supreme weapons.

वहाँ खोखले तीर और उस्तरे-नुकीले तीर, लोहे के तीर, कील, भाले और भाले और कई अन्य प्रकार के तेज और सर्वोच्च हथियार थे।

चित्रैश्च विविधाकारैः शरीरावरणैरपि विचित्रैश्च रथैर्भग्नैर्हतैश्च गजवाजिभिः

There was diverse and colourful armour for the body. Many chariots were shattered. Many elephants and horses were slain.

With the standards brought down, the chariots looked like empty cities. Bereft of men, the frightened horses dragged the chariots here and there.

मानकों के नीचे आने से, रथ खाली शहरों की तरह लग रहे थे। मनुष्यों के अभाव में भयभीत घोड़े रथों को इधर-उधर घसीटने लगे।

वातायमानैरसकृद्धतवीरैरलंकृतैः व्यजनैः कङ्कटैश्चैव ध्वजैश्च विनिपातितैः

They ran with a speed like that of the wind. There were brave warriors with ornaments, whisks, mail and standards. They were brought down.

वे वायु के समान वेग से दौड़े। वहाँ आभूषण, मूंछ, मेल और ध्वजधारी वीर योद्धा थे। उन्हें नीचे लाया गया.

छत्रैराभरणैर्वस्त्रैर्माल्यैश्च सुसुगन्धिभिः हारैः किरीटैर्मुकुटैरुष्णीषैः किङ्किणीगणैः

There were umbrellas, ornaments, garments and fragrant garlands. There were necklaces, crowns, diadems, headdresses and large numbers of bells.

वहाँ छत्र, आभूषण, वस्त्र और सुगन्धित मालाएँ थीं। वहाँ हार, मुकुट, मुकुट, टोपी और बड़ी संख्या में घंटियाँ थीं।

उरस्यैर्मणिभिर्निष्कैश्चूडामणिभिरेव च आसीदायोधनं तत्र नभस्तारागणैरिव

There were gems on the breasts and jewels worn on golden headgear. With these beautiful objects scattered around, the place looked like the sky, adorned by a large number of stars.

वक्षस्थलों पर रत्न और स्वर्ण टोपी पर रत्न जड़े हुए थे। चारों ओर बिखरी इन सुंदर वस्तुओं के साथ, वह स्थान बड़ी संख्या में तारों से सुशोभित आकाश जैसा दिखता था।

ततो दुर्योधनस्यासीन्नकुलेन समागमः अमर्षितेन क्रुद्धस्य क्रुद्धेनामर्षितस्य च

Duryodhana was intolerant and angry. He clashed against Nākula, who was also intolerant and angry.

दुर्योधन असहिष्णु और क्रोधी था. वह नकुल से भिड़ गया, जो असहिष्णु और क्रोधी भी था।

अपसव्यं चकाराथ माद्रीपुत्रस्तवात्मजम् किरञ्शरशतैर्हृष्टस्तत्र नादो महानभूत्

Mādrī's son cheerfully struck your son on his right side with a large number of arrows and a loud roar broke out.

माद्री के पुत्र ने प्रसन्नतापूर्वक आपके पुत्र की दाहिनी ओर पर बहुत से बाणों का प्रहार किया और बड़े जोर से गर्जना हुई।

अपसव्यं कृतः संख्ये भ्रातृव्येनात्यमर्षिणा सोऽमर्षितस्तमप्याजौ प्रतिचक्रेऽपसव्यतः

In that battle, he was struck on his right flank by his cousin brother and became intolerant. Thus angered, he also struck back on the right flank.

उस युद्ध में, उसके दाहिने पार्श्व में उसके चचेरे भाई ने प्रहार किया और वह असहिष्णु हो गया। इस प्रकार क्रोधित होकर, उसने भी दाहिनी ओर से पलटवार किया।

Having been thus attacked by your son from the right flank, the energetic Nākula executed wonderful circles and countered him.
