धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ध्वजान्बहुविधाकारान्भ्राजमानानतिश्रिया पार्थानां मामकानां च तान्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya! There were many resplendent standards of diverse forms, belonging to the Pārtha-s and those on our side. Describe those to me.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: हे संजय! पार्थ-स और हमारे पक्ष के विविध रूपों के कई देदीप्यमान मानक थे। मुझे उनका वर्णन करो.

संजय उवाच ध्वजान्बहुविधाकाराञ्शृणु तेषां महात्मनाम् रूपतो वर्णतश्चैव नामतश्च निबोध मे

Sañjaya replied: Those great-souled ones possessed many different standards, of diverse forms. They had different forms, colours and names. Listen to me.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: उन महान आत्माओं के पास विविध रूपों के, कई अलग-अलग मानक थे। उनके भिन्न-भिन्न रूप, रंग और नाम थे। मेरी बात सुनो।

तेषां तु रथमुह्यानां रथेषु विविधा ध्वजाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त राजेन्द्र ज्वलिता इव पावकाः

The chariots of those foremost among rāṭha-s had many different kinds of standards. O Indra among kings! They were seen to blaze like fire.

रथों में अग्रणी लोगों के रथों में कई प्रकार के मानक होते थे। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! वे अग्नि के समान धधकते हुए दिखाई दे रहे थे।

काञ्चनाः काञ्चनापीडाः काञ्चनस्रगलंकृताः काञ्चनानीव शृङ्गाणि काञ्चनस्य महागिरेः

They were golden, decorated with gold, or garlanded with gold. They were like golden summits and like giant mountains made out of gold.

वे सुनहरे थे, सोने से सजाए गए थे, या सोने की माला पहने हुए थे। वे सुनहरे शिखरों और सोने से बने विशाल पर्वतों के समान थे।

ते ध्वजाः संवृतास्तेषां पताकाभिः समन्ततः नानावर्णविरागाभिर्विबभुः सर्वतो वृताः

Those standards were surrounded by pennants in every direction. These were of many different colours and hues and surrounded them everywhere.

वे मानक हर दिशा में पताकों से घिरे हुए थे। ये कई अलग-अलग रंगों और रंगों के थे और उन्हें हर जगह घेरे हुए थे।

पताकाश्च ततस्तास्तु श्वसनेन समीरिताः नृत्यमानाः व्यदृश्यन्त रङ्गमध्ये विलासिकाः

Those pennants were stirred by the wind. They were seen to be dancing around, like female dancers in an arena.

हवा से वे सिक्के हिल गये। उन्हें अखाड़े में महिला नर्तकियों की तरह नाचते हुए देखा गया।

इन्द्रायुधसवर्णाभाः पताका भरतर्षभ दोधूयमाना रथिनां शोभयन्ति महारथान्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Those pennants had the complexion of Indra's weapon. They stirred above the chariots and adorned the mahāratha-s.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उन पताकाओं का रंग इन्द्र के अस्त्र के समान था। उन्होंने रथों के ऊपर हलचल की और महारथों को सुशोभित किया।

सिंहलाङ्गूलमुग्रास्यं धजं वानरलक्षणम् धनंजयस्य संग्रामे प्रत्यपश्याम भैरवम्

There was a standard with the sign of an ape, as fierce as the face and tail of a lion. This belonged to Dhanañjayā and was seen to cause terror in battle.

वहाँ एक वानर के चिह्न वाला एक मानक था, जो सिंह के मुख और पूँछ के समान भयंकर था। यह धनन्जय का था और युद्ध में आतंक पैदा करने वाला माना जाता था।

स वानरवरो राजन्पताकाभिरलंकृतः त्रासयामास तत्सैन्यं ध्वजो गाण्डीवधन्वनः

O king! The flag was adorned with the supreme of apes. Your soldiers were terrified by the standard of the wielder of Gāṇḍīva.

हे राजा! ध्वज वानरों की सर्वोच्च प्रतिमा से सुशोभित था। गाण्डीवरक्षक के आचरण से आपके सैनिक भयभीत हो गये थे।

तथैव सिंहलाङ्गूलं द्रोणपुत्रस्य भारत ध्वजाग्रं समपश्याम बालसूर्यसमप्रभम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In that way, the top of the standard of Droṇa's son had the mark of a lion's tail and was seen to be as radiant as the rising sun.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस प्रकार द्रोणपुत्र के ध्वज के शिखर पर सिंह की पूँछ का चिह्न था और वह उगते हुए सूर्य के समान दीप्तिमान दिखाई देता था।

काञ्चनं पवनोद्धूतं शक्रध्वजसमप्रभम् नन्दनं कौरवेन्द्राणां द्रौणेर्लक्षणमुच्छ्रितम्

It was golden and fluttered in the wind. It was as resplendent as Śākra's standard. The standard of Droṇa's son arose high and delighted the Indra-s among the Kaurava-s.

वह सुनहरा था और हवा में लहरा रहा था। यह शक्र के मानक के समान देदीप्यमान था। द्रोण के पुत्र का स्तर ऊंचा हो गया और उसने कौरवों के बीच इंद्रों को प्रसन्न किया।

हस्तिकक्ष्या पुनर्हैमी बभूवाधिरथेर्ध्वजे आहवे खं महाराज ददृशे पूरयन्निव

The standard of Adhiratha's son had the mark of an elephant's housing that was fashioned in gold. O great king! It dazzled and in the battle, seemed to fill up the sky.

अधिरथ के पुत्र के ध्वज पर हाथी के आवास का चिह्न था जो सोने से बना हुआ था। हे महान राजा! यह चकाचौंध कर देता था और युद्ध में ऐसा लगता था मानो आकाश भर गया हो।

पताकी काञ्चनस्रग्वी ध्वजः कर्णस्य संयुगे नृत्यतीव रथोपस्थे श्वसनेन समीरितः

In the battle, golden pennants and garlands were attached to Karṇa's standard. Stirred by the wind, they seemed to dance around on top of the chariot.

युद्ध में कर्ण के ध्वज में स्वर्ण पताकाएँ और मालाएँ जुड़ी हुई थीं। हवा से उत्तेजित होकर, वे रथ के ऊपर चारों ओर नृत्य करते प्रतीत हो रहे थे।

आचार्यस्य च पाण्डूनां ब्राह्मणस्य यशस्विनः गोवृषो गौतमस्यासीत्कृपस्य सुपरिष्कृतः

The preceptor of the Pāṇḍu-s was the illustrious brāhmaṇa. Kṛpa, the son of Gautama, had a well-crafted bull on his.

पाण्डु-वंश के गुरु एक प्रतिष्ठित ब्राह्मण थे। गौतम के पुत्र कृप के पास एक सुसज्जित बैल था।

स तेन भ्राजते राजन्गोवृषेण महारथः त्रिपुरघ्नरथो यद्वद्गोवृषेण विराजते

O king! With the mark of the bull, the mahāratha was resplendent, like the destroyer of Tripurā is dazzling with the mark of the bull.

हे राजा! बैल के चिह्न से महारथ शोभायमान हो रहा था, जैसे बैल के चिह्न से त्रिपुर का विध्वंसक शोभा पा रहा हो।

मयूरो वृषसेनस्य काञ्चनो मणिरत्नवान् व्याहरिष्यन्निवातिष्ठत्सेनाग्रमपि शोभयन्

Vṛṣasena had a golden peacock, adorned with gems and jewels. Stationed there, it seemed to crow and adorn the front of the army.

वृषसेन के पास रत्नों और रत्नों से सुसज्जित एक सुनहरा मोर था। वहां तैनात होकर ऐसा प्रतीत होता था जैसे वह बांग दे रहा हो और सेना के सामने शोभा बढ़ा रहा हो।

तेन तस्य रथो भाति मयूरेण महात्मनः यथा स्कन्दस्य राजेन्द्र मयूरेण विराजता

The great-souled one's chariot was dazzling with the peacock. O Indra among kings! It was like the resplendent Skānda aloft his peacock.

उन महाबली का रथ मोर से जगमगा रहा था। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! यह ऐसा था जैसे देदीप्यमान स्कंद अपने मोर पर सवार हो।

मद्रराजस्य शल्यस्य ध्वजाग्रेऽग्निशिखामिव सौवर्णीं प्रतिपश्याम सीतामप्रतिमां शुभाम्

Śalya, the king of Madra, possessed a beautiful golden image of a plough on the top of his standard and it was like the flame of a fire.

मद्र के राजा शल्य के पास अपने झंडे के शीर्ष पर हल की एक सुंदर सुनहरी छवि थी और यह आग की लौ की तरह थी।

सा सीता भ्राजते तस्य रथमास्थाय मारिष सर्वबीजविरूढेव यथा सीता श्रिया वृता

O venerable one! The plough was luminescent on the top of his chariot. The plough was surrounded by prosperity, with every kind of seed sprouting from it.

हे आदरणीय! उनके रथ के शीर्ष पर हल चमक रहा था। हल समृद्धि से घिरा हुआ था, उसमें से हर तरह के बीज उग रहे थे।

वराहः सिन्धुराजस्य राजतोऽभिविराजते ध्वजाग्रेऽलोहितार्काभो हेमजालपरिष्कृतः

A silver boar adorned the top of the king of Sindhu's standard. It was decorated with golden nets and had the complexion of a bloodless crystal.

एक चाँदी का सूअर सिन्धु के राजा के ध्वज के शीर्ष पर सुशोभित था। इसे सुनहरे जालों से सजाया गया था और इसका रंग रक्तहीन क्रिस्टल जैसा था।

शुशुभे केतुना तेन राजतेन जयद्रथः यथा देवासुरे युद्धे पुरा पूषा स्म शोभते

With that silver standard, Jayadratha looked beautiful, like Pūṣā was radiant in ancient times in the battle between the gods and the āsura-s.

उस चांदी के ध्वज के साथ, जयद्रथ सुंदर लग रहा था, जैसे प्राचीन काल में देवताओं और असुरों के बीच युद्ध में पूषा तेजस्वी थी।

सौमदत्तेः पुनर्यूपो यज्ञशीलस्य धीमतः ध्वजः सूर्य इवाभाति सोमश्चात्र प्रदृश्यते

Somadatta's intelligent son was devoted to sacrifices and his standard had the mark of a sacrificial stake and was seen to be as radiant as the sun or the moon.

सोमदत्त का बुद्धिमान पुत्र यज्ञ के प्रति समर्पित था और उसके ध्वज पर बलि के डंडे का निशान था और वह सूर्य या चंद्रमा के समान दीप्तिमान दिखाई देता था।

स यूपः काञ्चनो राजन्सौमदत्तेर्विराजते राजसूये मखश्रेष्ठे यथा यूपः समुच्छ्रितः

O king! Somadatta's son was dazzling with that golden sacrificial stake. It was like a sacrificial stake raised in rājasūya, the best of all sacrifices.

हे राजा! सोमदत्त का पुत्र उस स्वर्ण यज्ञ स्तंभ से शोभायमान हो रहा था। यह राजसूय में उठाए गए यज्ञ के खूँटे जैसा था, जो सभी यज्ञों में सर्वोत्तम है।

शलस्य तु महाराज राजतो द्विरदो महान् केतुः काञ्चनचित्राङ्गैर्मयूरैरुपशोभितः

O great king! Śala had a large silver elephant. The pennant was golden and colourful and was adorned with the sign of peacocks.

हे महान राजा! शाला के पास चांदी का एक बड़ा हाथी था। पताका सुनहरी और रंगीन थी और मोर के चिन्ह से सुशोभित थी।

स केतुः शोभयामास सैन्यं ते भरतर्षभ यथा श्वेतो महानागो देवराजचमूं तथा

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! That pennant adorned your troops, like the giant white elephant adorns the army of the king of the gods.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! वह पताका आपकी सेना की शोभा बढ़ाती है, जैसे विशाल सफेद हाथी देवताओं के राजा की सेना को सुशोभित करता है।

नागो मणिमयो राज्ञो ध्वजः कनकसंवृतः किङ्किणीशतसंह्रादो भ्राजंश्चित्रे रथोत्तमे

There was a bejewelled elephant on the king's standard, which was decorated with gold. 149 It tinkled with the sound of one hundred bells and colourfully blazed on the supreme of chariots.

राजा के झंडे पर एक रत्नजड़ित हाथी था, जो सोने से सजाया गया था। 149 यह एक सौ घंटियों की ध्वनि से गूंजता था और रथों के शीर्ष पर रंग-बिरंगी रोशनी बिखेरता था।

व्यभ्राजत भृशं राजन्पुत्रस्तव विशां पते ध्वजेन महता संख्ये कुरूणामृषभस्तदा

O king! O lord of the earth! Your son, a bull among the Kuru-s, looked extremely resplendent with that large standard in the battle.

हे राजा! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आपका पुत्र, कुरुवंश का एक बैल, युद्ध में उस विशाल ध्वज के साथ अत्यंत देदीप्यमान दिख रहा था।

नवैते तव वाहिन्यामुच्छ्रिताः परमध्वजाः व्यदीपयंस्ते पृतनां युगान्तादित्यसंनिभाः

These nine supreme standards arose in your army. They blazed amidst the forces, like the sun at the time of the destruction of a yuga.

ये नौ सर्वोच्च मानक आपकी सेना में उत्पन्न हुए। वे युग के विनाश के समय सूर्य की भाँति सेनाओं के बीच प्रज्वलित हो उठे।

दशमस्त्वर्जुनस्यासीदेक एव महाकपिः अदीप्यतार्जुनो येन हिमवानिव वह्निना

The tenth standard was Arjuna's, marked with a giant ape. Arjuna blazed, like a fire on the Himālaya-s.

दसवीं कक्षा अर्जुन की थी, जिस पर एक विशाल वानर अंकित था। अर्जुन हिमालय पर अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित हो उठे।

ततश्चित्राणि शुभ्राणि सुमहान्ति महारथाः कार्मुकाण्याददुस्तूर्णमर्जुनार्थे परंतपाः

The mahāratha-s, scorchers of enemies, grasped colourful, bright and extremely large bows and swiftly advanced against Arjuna.

शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले महारथी रंग-बिरंगे, चमकीले और अत्यंत बड़े धनुष लेकर तेजी से अर्जुन के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े।

तथैव धनुरायच्छत्पार्थः शत्रुविनाशनः गाण्डीवं दिव्यकर्मा तद्राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव

Pārtha, the destroyer of enemies, also grasped the bow Gāṇḍīva, the performer of divine deeds. O king! All this happened because of your evil counsel.

शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले पार्थ ने दिव्य कर्मों के कर्ता गाण्डीव धनुष को भी पकड़ लिया था। हे राजा! यह सब तेरी दुष्ट युक्ति के कारण हुआ।

तवापराधाद्धि नरा निहता बहुधा युधि नानादिग्भ्यः समाहूताः सहयाः सरथद्विपाः

Because of your crimes, many men and many warriors were killed. They had been summoned from many directions, with horses, chariots and elephants.

तुम्हारे अपराधों के कारण बहुत से मनुष्य और बहुत से योद्धा मारे गये। उन्हें घोड़ों, रथों और हाथियों के साथ कई दिशाओं से बुलाया गया था।

तेषामासीद्व्यतिक्षेपो गर्जतामितरेतरम् दुर्योधनमुखानां च पाण्डूनामृषभस्य च

With Duryodhana at the forefront, there were these on one side and that bull among Pāṇḍu-s on the other. They roared at each other and the encounter began.

सबसे आगे दुर्योधन के साथ, एक तरफ ये थे और दूसरी तरफ पांडु के बीच में वह बैल था। वे एक-दूसरे पर दहाड़ने लगे और मुठभेड़ शुरू हो गई।

तत्राद्भुतं परं चक्रे कौन्तेयः कृष्णसारथिः यदेको बहुभिः सार्धं समागच्छदभीतवत्

Kaunteya had Kṛṣṇā as his charioteer and performed supreme and extraordinary deeds. Fearlessly, the single one advanced against the many.

कौन्तेय ने कृष्ण को अपना सारथी बनाया और सर्वोच्च तथा असाधारण कार्य किये। निडर होकर अकेला अनेकों से आगे बढ़ा।

अशोभत महाबाहुर्गाण्डीवं विक्षिपन्धनुः जिगीषुस्तान्नरव्याघ्राञ्जिघांसुश्च जयद्रथम्

The mighty-armed one was resplendent when he stretched the bow Gāṇḍīva. The tiger among men wished to kill Jayadratha.

जब महाबाहु ने गाण्डीव धनुष बढ़ाया तो वह देदीप्यमान हो उठा। मनुष्यों में बाघ जयद्रथ को मारना चाहता था।

तत्रार्जुनो महाराज शरैर्मुक्तैः सहस्रशः अदृश्यानकरोद्योधांस्तावकाञ्शत्रुतापनः

O great king! Arjuna released thousands of arrows. That scorcher of enemies made the warriors on your side invisible.

हे महान राजा! अर्जुन ने हजारों बाण छोड़े। शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाली उस शक्ति ने आपके पक्ष के योद्धाओं को अदृश्य कर दिया।

ततस्तेऽपि नरव्याघ्राः पार्थं सर्वे महारथाः अदृश्यं समरे चक्रुः सायकौघैः समन्ततः

In that battle, all those mahāratha-s, tigers among men, also showered down a cloud of arrows and made Pārtha invisible.

उस युद्ध में उन सभी महारथियों ने भी बाणों की वर्षा करके पार्थ को अदृश्य कर दिया।

संवृते नरसिंहैस्तैः कुरूणामृषभेऽर्जुने महानासीत्समुद्धूतस्तस्य सैन्यस्य निस्वनः

On seeing that Arjuna, bull among the Kuru lineage, was thus covered through the hands of those lions among men, a great sound arose among the soldiers.

यह देखकर कि कुरु वंश का बैल अर्जुन इस प्रकार मनुष्यों में सिंहों के हाथों से ढका हुआ है, सैनिकों के बीच एक महान ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुई।
