संजय उवाच स रणे व्यचरत्पार्थः प्रेक्षणीयो धनंजयः युगपद्दिक्षु सर्वासु चित्राण्यस्त्राणि दर्शयन्

Sañjaya said: Dhanañjayā was seen to roam around in that battle and he seemed to be simultaneously everywhere. He exhibited his wonderful weapons.

संजय ने कहा: धनंजय को उस युद्ध में घूमते हुए देखा गया था और वह हर जगह एक साथ दिखाई दे रहे थे। उन्होंने अपने अद्भुत हथियारों का प्रदर्शन किया.

मध्यंदिनगतं सूर्यं प्रतपन्तमिवाम्बरे न शेकुः सर्वभूतानि पाण्डवं प्रतिवीक्षितुम्

He was like the midday sun, scorching everything from the sky. None of the beings were capable of glancing at Pāṇḍava.

वह दोपहर के सूरज की तरह था, जो आकाश से सब कुछ झुलसा रहा था। कोई भी प्राणी पांडव की ओर देखने में सक्षम नहीं था।

प्रसृतांस्तस्य गाण्डीवाच्छरव्रातान्महात्मनः संग्रामे समपश्याम हंसपङ्क्तीरिवाम्बरे

A torrent of arrows issued from the great-souled one's Gāṇḍīva. In that battle, they seemed to be like an array of swans in the sky.

महात्मा के गाण्डीव से बाणों की धार निकली। उस युद्ध में वे आकाश में हंसों के समूह के समान जान पड़ते थे।

विनिवार्य स वीराणामस्त्रैरस्त्राणि सर्वशः दर्शयन्रौद्रमात्मानमुग्रे कर्मणि धिष्ठितः

He countered all those brave ones with his weapons. Through his fierce deeds, he exhibited his terrible self.

उन्होंने उन सभी वीरों का अपने शस्त्रों से मुकाबला किया। अपने उग्र कार्यों से उसने अपने भयानक स्वरूप का प्रदर्शन किया।

स तान्रथवरान्राजन्नभ्यतिक्रामदर्जुनः मोहयन्निव नाराचैर्जयद्रथवधेप्सया

O king! Arjuna passed all those rāṭha-s and confounded them with his iron arrows, wishing to kill Jayadratha.

हे राजा! जयद्रथ को मारने की इच्छा से अर्जुन ने उन सभी रथों को पार किया और अपने लोहे के तीरों से उन्हें भ्रमित कर दिया।

विसृजन्दिक्षु सर्वासु शरानसितसारथिः स रणे व्यचरत्तूर्णं प्रेक्षणीयो धनंजयः

With his charioteer, Dhanañjayā was seen to swiftly course around in that field of battle, releasing arrows in all the directions.

अपने सारथी के साथ, धनंजय को युद्ध के मैदान में तेजी से घूमते हुए, सभी दिशाओं में तीर छोड़ते हुए देखा गया।

भ्रमन्त इव शूरस्य शरव्राता महात्मनः अदृश्यन्तान्तरिक्षस्थाः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

Hundreds and thousands of arrows were shot by the brave and great-souled one and these torrents traversed the sky and made it invisible.

उस बहादुर और महान आत्मा ने सैकड़ों और हजारों तीर चलाए और इन मूसलाधार धाराओं ने आकाश को पार कर उसे अदृश्य बना दिया।

आददानं महेष्वासं संदधानं च पाण्डवम् विसृजन्तं च कौन्तेयं नानुपश्यामहे तदा

The great archer picked up an arrow, affixed it and shot it. But we did not notice any gap between Kaunteya Pāṇḍava doing these.

महान धनुर्धर ने एक तीर उठाया, उसे चिपकाया और चला दिया। लेकिन हमें कौन्तेय पांडव के ऐसा करने के बीच कोई अंतर नज़र नहीं आया।

तथा सर्वा दिशो राजन्सर्वांश्च रथिनो रणे आकुलीकृत्य कौन्तेयो जयद्रथमुपाद्रवत् विव्याध च चतुःषष्ट्या शराणां नतपर्वणाम्

O king! Having covered all the directions and having afflicted all the rāṭha-s in that battle, Kaunteya attacked Jayadratha. He pierced him with sixty-four arrows with straight tufts.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में सभी दिशाओं को कवर करने और सभी रथों को पीड़ित करने के बाद, कौन्तेय ने जयद्रथ पर हमला किया। उन्होंने सीधे गुच्छों वाले चौंसठ बाणों से उसे बींध डाला।

सैन्धवस्तु तथा विद्धः शरैर्गाण्डीवधन्वना न चक्षमे सुसंक्रुद्धस्तोत्त्रार्दित इव द्विपः

Saindhava was thus pierced by arrows shot by the wielder of Gāṇḍīva. He became extremely enraged, like an elephant struck by a goad, and could not tolerate this.

इस प्रकार गाण्डीवरक्षक के बाणों से सैन्धव घायल हो गये। वह अंकुश से घायल हुए हाथी के समान अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गया और यह सहन नहीं कर सका।

स वराहध्वजस्तूर्णं गार्ध्रपत्रानजिह्मगान् आशीविषसमप्रख्यान्कर्मारपरिमार्जितान् मुमोच निशितान्संख्ये सायकान्सव्यसाचिनि

The one with the boar on his banner used arrows that were tufted with the feathers of vultures. They were like venomous serpents and had been prepared by artisans. In that battle, he released these sharp arrows towards Savyasachi.

जिसके बैनर पर सूअर था वह गिद्धों के पंखों वाले तीरों का इस्तेमाल करता था। वे विषैले साँपों की तरह थे और कारीगरों द्वारा तैयार किये गये थे। उस युद्ध में उन्होंने सव्यसाची की ओर ये तीखे बाण छोड़े।

त्रिभिस्तु विद्ध्वा गाण्डीवं नाराचैः षड्भिरर्जुनम् अष्टाभिर्वाजिनोऽविध्यद्ध्वजं चैकेन पत्रिणा

He pierced Gāṇḍīva with three arrows and struck Arjuna with six iron arrows. He pierced his horses with eight arrows and his standard with one.

उन्होंने तीन बाणों से गाण्डीव को घायल कर दिया और छह लोहे के बाणों से अर्जुन को घायल कर दिया। उसने आठ बाणों से अपने घोड़ों को तथा एक बाण से अपने ध्वज को घायल कर दिया।

स विक्षिप्यार्जुनस्तीक्ष्णान्सैन्धवप्रेषिताञ्शरान् युगपत्तस्य चिच्छेद शराभ्यां सैन्धवस्य ह सारथेश्च शिरः कायाद्ध्वजं च समलंकृतम्

Arjuna countered the arrows shot by Saindhava with his own sharp arrows. Simultaneously, with a couple of arrows, he severed the head of Saindhava's charioteer from his body and brought down the well-ornamented standard.

अर्जुन ने सैन्धवों द्वारा चलाये गये बाणों का प्रतिकार अपने पैने बाणों से किया। इसके साथ ही उन्होंने दो बाणों से सैंधव के सारथी का सिर धड़ से अलग कर दिया और सुसज्जित ध्वज को भी गिरा दिया।

स छिन्नयष्टिः सुमहाञ्शीर्यमाणः शराहतः वराहः सिन्धुराजस्य पपाताग्निशिखोपमः

The king of Sindhu's standard was marked with the sign of a boar and was extremely large. Its pole was broken and it was shattered by those arrows.

सिंधु के राजा का राजचिह्न शूकर के चिह्न से अंकित था और अत्यंत विशाल था। उन बाणों से उसका खम्भा टूट गया और चूर-चूर हो गया।

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु द्रुतं गच्छति भास्करे अब्रवीत्पाण्डवं तत्र त्वरमाणो जनार्दनः

It fell down, like a fiery flame. Meanwhile, the sun was descending quickly. Janārdana hastily spoke to Pāṇḍava.

वह प्रचंड ज्वाला की भाँति नीचे गिर पड़ा। इस बीच, सूरज तेज़ी से ढल रहा था। जनार्दन ने झट से पांडव से कहा।

धनंजय शिरश्छिन्धि सैन्धवस्य दुरात्मनः अस्तं महीधरश्रेष्ठं यियासति दिवाकरः शृणुष्वैव च मे वाक्यं जयद्रथवधं प्रति

"O Dhanañjayā! Cut off the head of the evil-souled Saindhava. The sun is about to set on Asta, the best of mountains. But listen to the words I have to say about killing Jayadratha.

"हे धनंजय! दुष्टात्मा सैन्धव का सिर काट दो। सूर्य पर्वतों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ अस्त पर अस्त होने वाला है। लेकिन जयद्रथ को मारने के बारे में मुझे जो शब्द कहने हैं, उन्हें सुनो।"

वृद्धक्षत्रः सैन्धवस्य पिता जगति विश्रुतः स कालेनेह महता सैन्धवं प्राप्तवान्सुतम्

Saindhava's father, Vṛddhakṣatra, is famous in the world. He obtained Saindhava after a long period of time.

सैंधव के पिता वृद्धक्षत्र जगत् में प्रसिद्ध हैं। काफी समय के बाद उन्हें सैन्धव प्राप्त हुआ।

जयद्रथममित्रघ्नं तं चोवाच ततो नृपम् अन्तर्हिता तदा वाणी मेघदुन्दुभिनिस्वना

Jayadratha, the scorcher of enemies, as his son after a long period of time and an invisible voice, with a rumbling tone like that of the clouds, spoke to the king then.

तब शत्रुओं को जलाने वाले जयद्रथ ने अपने पुत्र के रूप में बहुत समय के बाद बादलों की सी गड़गड़ाहट वाली अदृश्य आवाज में राजा से बात की।

तवात्मजोऽयं मर्त्येषु कुलशीलदमादिभिः गुणैर्भविष्यति विभो सदृशो वंशयोर्द्वयोः क्षत्रियप्रवरो लोके नित्यं शूराभिसत्कृतः

O lord! In this world, your son will possess lineage, conduct and qualities that are equal to those of two lineages. He will be foremost among kṣatriya-s in the world and will be revered by brave ones.

हे भगवान! इस संसार में आपके पुत्र के पास दो कुलों के समान वंश, आचरण और गुण होंगे। वह संसार में क्षत्रियों में अग्रणी होगा और शूरवीरों द्वारा पूजनीय होगा।

शत्रुभिर्युध्यमानस्य संग्रामे त्वस्य धन्विनः शिरश्छेत्स्यति संक्रुद्धः शत्रुर्नालक्षितो भुवि

But when he is fighting against an enemy in a battle, that enemy archer, famous on earth, will sever his head."

परन्तु जब वह युद्ध में किसी शत्रु से लड़ रहा होगा, तब पृथ्वी पर विख्यात वह शत्रु धनुर्धर उसका सिर काट डालेगा।”

एतच्छ्रुत्वा सिन्धुराजो ध्यात्वा चिरमरिंदम ज्ञातीन्सर्वानुवाचेदं पुत्रस्नेहाभिपीडितः

Having heard this, the king of Sindhu, the scorcher of enemies, reflected for a long time. Afflicted by affection towards his son, he summoned all his relatives and told them,

यह सुनकर शत्रुओं को जलाने वाले सिंधुराज राजा बहुत देर तक विचार करते रहे। पुत्र मोह से पीड़ित होकर उसने अपने सभी रिश्तेदारों को बुलाया और उनसे कहा,

संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य वहतो महतीं धुरम् धरण्यां मम पुत्रस्य पातयिष्यति यः शिरः तस्यापि शतधा मूर्धा फलिष्यति न संशयः

"The person who fights with my son in an encounter and brings his head down on the ground will bear a great burden. There is no doubt that his head will shatter into a hundred fragments."

"जो मनुष्य मेरे पुत्र से मुठभेड़ में युद्ध करके उसका सिर भूमि पर गिरा देगा, उस पर बड़ा भारी बोझ पड़ेगा। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि उसके सिर के सौ टुकड़े हो जायेंगे।"

एवमुक्त्वा ततो राज्ये स्थापयित्वा जयद्रथम् वृद्धक्षत्रो वनं यातस्तपश्चेष्टं समास्थितः

Having said this, he established Jayadratha on the throne. Vṛddhakṣatra went to the forest and immersed himself in austerities.

इतना कहकर उन्होंने जयद्रथ को सिंहासन पर स्थापित कर दिया। वृद्धक्षत्र जंगल में चले गये और तपस्या में लीन हो गये।

सोऽयं तप्यति तेजस्वी तपो घोरं दुरासदम् समन्तपञ्चकादस्माद्बहिर्वानरकेतन

The energetic one is still tormenting himself with terrible and extremely difficult austerities. O one with the ape on your banner! He is just outside Samantapañcaka.

ऊर्जावान अभी भी स्वयं को भयानक और अत्यंत कठिन तपस्या से पीड़ित कर रहा है। हे अपने बैनर पर वानर के साथ! वह समन्तपञ्चक के ठीक बाहर है।

तस्माज्जयद्रथस्य त्वं शिरश्छित्त्वा महामृधे दिव्येनास्त्रेण रिपुहन्घोरेणाद्भुतकर्मणा

O slayer of enemies! Therefore, once you have severed Jayadratha's head in this great battle, use your divine weapons that are terrible and perform wonderful deeds.

हे शत्रुओं के संहारक! अत: जब तुम इस महान युद्ध में जयद्रथ का सिर काट डालो, तब अपने भयानक दिव्य अस्त्रों का प्रयोग करो और अद्भुत कार्य करो।

सकुण्डलं सिन्धुपतेः प्रभञ्जनसुतानुज उत्सङ्गे पातयस्वाशु वृद्धक्षत्रस्य भारत

O younger brother of the son of the wind god! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! With its earrings, quickly convey the head of the king of Sindhu to Vṛddhakṣatra's lap and bring it down there.

हे पवनपुत्र के छोटे भाई! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उसकी बालियों के साथ, सिंधु के राजा के सिर को तुरंत वृद्धक्षत्र की गोद में पहुंचा दो और उसे वहां ले आओ।

अथ त्वमस्य मूर्धानं पातयिष्यसि भूतले तवापि शतधा मूर्धा फलिष्यति न संशयः

If you bring his head down on the ground, there is no doubt about the consequence that your head will shatter into a hundred fragments.

यदि तुम उसका सिर भूमि पर गिरा दोगे तो इसका परिणाम यह होगा कि तुम्हारा सिर सौ टुकड़ों में टूट जायेगा, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है।

यथा चैतन्न जानीयात्स राजा पृथिवीपतिः तथा कुरु कुरुश्रेष्ठ दिव्यमस्त्रमुपाश्रितः

O best of the Kuru-s! Resort to your divine weapons and do this, so that the king, the lord of the earth, does not know.

हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ! अपने दिव्य अस्त्रों का सहारा लो और ऐसा करो कि पृथ्वी के स्वामी राजा को पता न चले।

न ह्यसाध्यमकार्यं वा विद्यते तव किंचन समस्तेष्वपि लोकेषु त्रिषु वासवनन्दन

O son of Vāsava! There is no deed in the three worlds that you cannot perform."

हे वासव के पुत्र! तीनों लोकों में ऐसा कोई कर्म नहीं है जिसे आप नहीं कर सकते।"

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन् इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शं दिव्यमन्त्राभिमन्त्रितम्

Having heard these words, he licked the corners of his mouth. He used mantra-s to invoke a divine weapon that was like Indra's vajra to the touch.

ये शब्द सुनकर उसने अपने मुँह के कोने चाटे। उन्होंने एक दिव्य हथियार का आह्वान करने के लिए मंत्रों का उपयोग किया जो स्पर्श करने के लिए इंद्र के वज्र के समान था।

सर्वभारसहं शश्वद्गन्धमाल्यार्चितं शरम् विससर्जार्जुनस्तूर्णं सैन्धवस्य वधे वृतः

Arjuna, intent on the slaying of Saindhava, quickly released the arrow, which always bears every burden, is constantly worshipped with fragrant garlands.

अर्जुन ने सैंधवों के वध की इच्छा से शीघ्र ही वह बाण छोड़ दिया, जो सदैव प्रत्येक भार को सहन करता है, सुगंधित मालाओं से निरंतर पूजा जाता है।

स तु गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तः शरः श्येन इवाशुगः शकुन्तमिव वृक्षाग्रात्सैन्धवस्य शिरोऽहरत्

Released from Gāṇḍīva, that arrow was as swift as a hawk snatching a bird from the top of a tree. It severed Saindhava's head.

गाण्डीव से छोड़ा गया वह बाण वृक्ष की चोटी से किसी पक्षी को छीनने वाले बाज़ के समान तीव्र था। इससे सैन्धव का सिर धड़ से अलग हो गया।

अहरत्तत्पुनश्चैव शरैरूर्ध्वं धनंजयः दुर्हृदामप्रहर्षाय सुहृदां हर्षणाय च

With other arrows, Dhanañjayā bore it up again, thus causing grief to his ill-wishers and delight to his well-wishers.

अन्य बाणों से, धनंजय ने इसे फिर से झेला, जिससे उनके शुभचिंतकों को दुःख हुआ और उनके शुभचिंतकों को प्रसन्नता हुई।

शरैः कदम्बकीकृत्य काले तस्मिंश्च पाण्डवः समन्तपञ्चकाद्बाह्यं शिरस्तद्व्यहरत्ततः

At that time, Pāṇḍava made the head look like a kādamba flower and used arrows to convey it to Samantapañcaka.

उस समय, पांडव ने सिर को कदम्ब के फूल जैसा बना दिया और इसे समंतपञ्चक तक पहुंचाने के लिए तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु वृद्धक्षत्रो महीपतिः संध्यामुपास्ते तेजस्वी संबन्धी तव मारिष

O venerable one! The energetic King Vṛddhakṣatra, with whom you have a matrimonial alliance, was engaged in his evening prayers then.

हे आदरणीय! ऊर्जावान राजा वृद्धक्षत्र, जिनके साथ आपका वैवाहिक गठबंधन है, उस समय अपनी शाम की प्रार्थना में लगे हुए थे।

उपासीनस्य तस्याथ कृष्णकेशं सकुण्डलम् सिन्धुराजस्य मूर्धानमुत्सङ्गे समपातयत्

He was seated. The head of the king of Sindhu, with dark hair and earrings, was thrown down on his lap.

वह बैठा हुआ था. काले बालों और बालियों से युक्त सिन्धु के राजा का सिर उसकी गोद में गिरा हुआ था।

तस्योत्सङ्गे निपतितं शिरस्तच्चारुकुण्डलम् वृद्धक्षत्रस्य नृपतेरलक्षितमरिंदम

The head, with its beautiful earrings, was brought down on his lap. O scorcher of enemies! But King Vṛddhakṣatra did not notice it.

सुन्दर बालियों सहित उसका सिर उसकी गोद में रख दिया गया। हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! लेकिन राजा वृद्धक्षत्र ने इस पर ध्यान नहीं दिया।

कृतजप्यस्य तस्याथ वृद्धक्षत्रस्य धीमतः उत्तिष्ठतस्तत्सहसा शिरोऽगच्छद्धरातलम्

When the intelligent Vṛddhakṣatra stood up, after having finished his meditation, the head was suddenly flung down on the ground.

जब बुद्धिमान वृद्धक्षत्र अपना ध्यान समाप्त करने के बाद खड़े हुए, तो उनका सिर अचानक जमीन पर गिर गया।

ततस्तस्य नरेन्द्रस्य पुत्रमूर्धनि भूतलम् गते तस्यापि शतधा मूर्धागच्छदरिंदम

O scorcher of enemies! As soon as his son's head fell down on the ground, the king's head shattered into a hundred fragments.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! पुत्र का सिर भूमि पर गिरते ही राजा के सिर के सौ टुकड़े हो गये।

ततः सर्वाणि भूतानि विस्मयं जग्मुरुत्तमम् वासुदेवश्च बीभत्सुं प्रशशंस महारथम्

At this, all the beings were overcome by supreme wonder. All of them praised Vāsudeva and mahāratha Bībhatsu.

इस पर सभी प्राणी परम आश्चर्य से अभिभूत हो गये। उन सभी ने वासुदेव और महरथ बिभात्सु की प्रशंसा की।

ततो दृष्ट्वा विनिहतं सिन्धुराजं जयद्रथम् पुत्राणां तव नेत्रेभ्यो दुःखाद्बह्वपतज्जलम्

On seeing that Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu, had been killed, your sons were miserable and their eyes filled with tears.

सिन्धु देश के राजा जयद्रथ को मारा गया देखकर आपके पुत्र दुःखी हुए और उनकी आँखों में आँसू भर आये।

भीमसेनोऽपि संग्रामे बोधयन्निव पाण्डवम् सिंहनादेन महता पूरयामास रोदसी

So that Pāṇḍava might know, in that battle, Bhīmasena roared loudly like a lion and filled up heaven and earth.

ताकि पांडव जान सकें कि उस युद्ध में भीमसेन ने सिंह के समान जोर से दहाड़कर आकाश और पृथ्वी को भर दिया था।

तं श्रुत्वा तु महानादं धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः सैन्धवं निहतं मेने फल्गुनेन महात्मना

On hearing that loud roar, Yudhiṣṭhira, Dharma's son, understood that Saindhava had been killed by the great-souled Phālguna.

उस तीव्र गर्जना को सुनकर धर्मपुत्र युधिष्ठिर समझ गये कि महाबली फाल्गुन ने सैन्धव को मार डाला है।

ततो वादित्रघोषेण स्वान्योधानभिहर्षयन् अभ्यवर्तत संग्रामे भारद्वाजं युयुत्सया

He sounded musical instruments and delighted his warriors. Wishing to fight, he advanced in the battle against Bhāradvāja's son.

उसने संगीत वाद्ययंत्र बजाया और अपने योद्धाओं को प्रसन्न किया। युद्ध की इच्छा से वह भारद्वाज के पुत्र के विरुद्ध युद्ध में आगे बढ़ा।

ततः प्रववृते राजन्नस्तं गच्छति भास्करे द्रोणस्य सोमकैः सार्धं संग्रामो लोमहर्षणः

O king! After the sun had set, a battle commenced between Droṇa and the Somaka-s and it made the body hair stand up.

हे राजा! सूर्य डूबने के बाद, द्रोण और सोमकों के बीच युद्ध शुरू हुआ और इससे शरीर के बाल खड़े हो गए।

ते तु सर्वप्रयत्नेन भारद्वाजं जिघांसवः सैन्धवे निहते राजन्नयुध्यन्त महारथाः

O king! After Saindhava was slain, those mahāratha-s made every effort to kill Bhāradvāja's son.

हे राजा! सैंधव के मारे जाने के बाद, उन महारथों ने भारद्वाज के पुत्र को मारने का हर संभव प्रयास किया।

पाण्डवास्तु जयं लब्ध्वा सैन्धवं विनिहत्य च अयोधयंस्ततो द्रोणं जयोन्मत्तास्ततस्ततः

When Saindhava was slain, the Pāṇḍava-s obtained victory. Intoxicated with victory, they fought with Droṇa.

जब सैंधव मारे गए, तो पांडवों ने विजय प्राप्त की। विजय के नशे में वे द्रोण से युद्ध करने लगे।

अर्जुनोऽपि रणे योधांस्तावकान्रथसत्तमान् अयोधयन्महाराज हत्वा सैन्धवकं नृपम्

O great king! Having killed King Saindhava, in that encounter, Arjuna also fought with the supreme of rāṭha-s and warriors on your side.

हे महान राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में राजा सैंधव को मारने के बाद अर्जुन ने आपके पक्ष के श्रेष्ठ रथियों और योद्धाओं के साथ भी युद्ध किया।

स देवशत्रूनिव देवराजः; किरीटमाली व्यधमत्समन्तात् यथा तमांस्यभ्युदितस्तमोघ्नः; पूर्वां प्रतिज्ञां समवाप्य वीरः

The one with the diadem and the garland was like the king of the gods, fighting with the enemies of the gods and slaughtered them, like the rising sun destroying darkness. The brave one fulfilled the pledge he had taken earlier.
