संजय उवाच विष्णोः स्वसानन्दिकरः स विष्ण्वायुधभूषितः रराजातिरथः संख्ये जनार्दन इवापरः

Sañjaya said: He was the one who brought delight to Viṣṇu's sister. He was adorned with Viṣṇu's weapon. In the battle, the atiratha looked as beautiful as Janārdana.

संजय ने कहा: वह वही था जिसने विष्णु की बहन को प्रसन्न किया था। वह विष्णु के अस्त्र से सुशोभित था। युद्ध में अतिरथ जनार्दन के समान सुन्दर लग रहा था।

मारुतोद्धूतकेशान्तमुद्यतारिवरायुधम् वपुः समीक्ष्य पृथ्वीशा दुःसमीक्ष्यं सुरैरपि

The tips of his hair waved around in the wind. His supreme weapons were upraised. The lords of the earth looked at his body, though even the gods found it difficult to glance at it.

उसके बालों के सिरे हवा में इधर-उधर लहरा रहे थे। उनके सर्वोच्च हथियार ऊपर उठाये गये। पृथ्वी के राजाओं ने उसके शरीर को देखा, हालाँकि देवताओं के लिए भी उस पर नज़र डालना कठिन था।

तच्चक्रं भृशमुद्विग्नाः संचिच्छिदुरनेकधा महारथस्ततः कार्ष्णिः संजग्राह महागदाम्

They were extremely anxious because of the chariot wheel he held and sliced it down into many fragments. Kṛṣṇā's mahāratha son then grasped a gigantic club.

उसके रथ के पहिए को पकड़ने और उसके कई टुकड़े कर देने के कारण वे अत्यंत चिंतित हो गए। तब कृष्ण के महारथ पुत्र ने एक विशाल गदा पकड़ ली।

विधनुःस्यन्दनासिस्तैर्विचक्रश्चारिभिः कृतः अभिमन्युर्गदापाणिरश्वत्थामानमाद्रवत्

His enemies had deprived him of his bow and chariot, his sword and the chariot wheel. But with the club in his hand, Abhimanyu rushed against Aśvatthāma.

उसके शत्रुओं ने उससे उसका धनुष और रथ, उसकी तलवार और रथ का पहिया छीन लिया था। लेकिन हाथ में गदा लेकर अभिमन्यु अश्वत्थामा पर टूट पड़ा।

स गदामुद्यतां दृष्ट्वा ज्वलन्तीमशनीमिव अपाक्रामद्रथोपस्थाद्विक्रमांस्त्रीन्नरर्षभः

The upraised club was like a blazing thunderbolt. On beholding it, that bull among men alighted from his chariot and took three steps backwards.

ऊपर उठा हुआ गदा धधकते हुए वज्र के समान था। यह देखकर वह नर बैल अपने रथ से उतर गया और तीन कदम पीछे चला गया।

तस्याश्वान्गदया हत्वा तथोभौ पार्ष्णिसारथी शराचिताङ्गः सौभद्रः श्वाविद्वत्प्रत्यदृश्यत

Subhadrā's son used the club to slay his horses and the two charioteers who guarded his flanks. With arrows on all his limbs, he looked like a porcupine.

सुभद्रा के पुत्र ने उसके घोड़ों और उसके पार्श्व की रक्षा करने वाले दो सारथियों को मारने के लिए गदा का प्रयोग किया। उसके सभी अंगों पर बाण लगे होने के कारण वह साही के समान लग रहा था।

ततः सुबलदायादं कालकेयमपोथयत् जघान चास्यानुचरान्गान्धारान्सप्तसप्ततिम्

He then brought down Kālakeya, Subala's son, and killed seventy-seven of his followers from the land of Gāndhāra.

फिर उसने सुबाला के पुत्र कालकेय को मार गिराया और गांधार की भूमि से उसके सत्तरह अनुयायियों को मार डाला।

पुनर्ब्रह्मवसातीयाञ्जघान रथिनो दश केकयानां रथान्सप्त हत्वा च दश कुञ्जरान् दौःशासनिरथं साश्वं गदया समपोथयत्

He again killed ten rāṭha-s from the Brahmā-Vasātīya-s, seven rāṭha-s from the Kekaya-s and ten elephants. He then advanced against the chariot of Duḥśāsana's son and used the club to slay his horses.

उसने फिर से ब्रह्मा-वासतिया के दस रथों, केकय के सात रथों और दस हाथियों को मार डाला। फिर वह दु:शासन के पुत्र के रथ के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ा और उसके घोड़ों को मारने के लिए गदा का प्रयोग किया।

ततो दौःशासनिः क्रुद्धो गदामुद्यम्य मारिष अभिदुद्राव सौभद्रं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्

O venerable one! At this, Duḥśāsana's son was enraged and raised his club. Asking Subhadrā's son to wait, he attacked him.

हे आदरणीय! इस पर दु:शासन का पुत्र क्रोधित हो गया और उसने अपनी गदा उठाई। उसने सुभद्रा के बेटे को इंतजार करने के लिए कहा और उस पर हमला कर दिया।

तावुद्यतगदौ वीरावन्योन्यवधकाङ्क्षिणौ भ्रातृव्यौ संप्रजह्राते पुरेव त्र्यम्बकान्तकौ

Those two brave brothers wished to kill each other and raised their clubs against each other. They struck, like the destroyer Tryambaka in earlier times.

वे दोनों वीर भाई एक-दूसरे को मार डालना चाहते थे और एक-दूसरे के विरुद्ध अपनी-अपनी लाठियाँ उठा लेते थे। उन्होंने पहले के समय में विध्वंसक त्र्यंबक की तरह प्रहार किया।

तावन्योन्यं गदाग्राभ्यां संहत्य पतितौ क्षितौ इन्द्रध्वजाविवोत्सृष्टौ रणमध्ये परंतपौ

Having struck each other with the ends of their clubs, they both fell down on the ground. In the midst of that battle, those two scorchers of enemies were like Indra's standards that had been uprooted.

अपनी गदाओं के सिरों से एक दूसरे पर प्रहार करते हुए वे दोनों भूमि पर गिर पड़े। उस युद्ध के बीच में शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले वे दोनों इन्द्र के ध्वजों के समान उखड़ गये थे।

दौःशासनिरथोत्थाय कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः प्रोत्तिष्ठमानं सौभद्रं गदया मूर्ध्न्यताडयत्

The rāṭha who was Duḥśāsana's son, the extender of the deeds of the Kuru lineage, arose first and struck Subhadrā's son on the head with the club, as he was about to get up.

रथ, जो दु:शासन का पुत्र था, कुरु वंश के कर्मों का विस्तारक था, सबसे पहले उठा और सुभद्रा के पुत्र के सिर पर गदा से प्रहार किया, जब वह उठने ही वाला था।

गदावेगेन महता व्यायामेन च मोहितः विचेता न्यपतद्भूमौ सौभद्रः परवीरहा एवं विनिहतो राजन्नेको बहुभिराहवे

Because of exhaustion and because of the great force of the club, Subhadrā's son, the destroyer of enemy heroes, lost his senses and fell down on the ground, unconscious. O king! Thus, in that battle, a single one was slain by many.

थकावट के कारण तथा गदा की महान शक्ति के कारण शत्रुवीरों का संहार करने वाला सुभद्रा का पुत्र अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठा और अचेत होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ा। हे राजा! इस प्रकार, उस युद्ध में, एक अकेला कई लोगों द्वारा मारा गया।

क्षोभयित्वा चमूं सर्वां नलिनीमिव कुञ्जरः अशोभत हतो वीरो व्याधैर्वनगजो यथा

He had agitated all the soldiers, like an elephant among lotuses. The brave one was as resplendent as a wild elephant killed by hunters.

उसने कमलों के बीच हाथी की तरह सभी सैनिकों को उत्तेजित कर दिया था। वह वीर शिकारियों द्वारा मारे गये जंगली हाथी के समान तेजस्वी था।

तं तथा पतितं शूरं तावकाः पर्यवारयन् दावं दग्ध्वा यथा शान्तं पावकं शिशिरात्यये

The brave one fell down and was surrounded by all those on your side. He looked like a fire during the summer, pacified by the onset of winter.

वह वीर गिर पड़ा और आपके पक्ष के सभी लोगों ने उसे घेर लिया। वह गर्मियों के दौरान आग की तरह दिखता था, जो सर्दियों की शुरुआत तक शांत हो जाती थी।

विमृद्य तरुशृङ्गाणि संनिवृत्तमिवानिलम् अस्तं गतमिवादित्यं तप्त्वा भारतवाहिनीम्

He was like a storm that has subsided after destroying the tops of trees. After scorching the army of the Bhārata-s, he was like a sun that has set, like the eclipsed moon, or the ocean with all its water dried up.

वह उस तूफ़ान के समान था जो वृक्षों की चोटियों को नष्ट करके शांत हो गया हो। भरत की सेना को झुलसाने के बाद, वह डूबे हुए सूर्य के समान था, ग्रहणग्रस्त चंद्रमा के समान था, या समुद्र का सारा पानी सूख गया था।

उपप्लुतं यथा सोमं संशुष्कमिव सागरम् पूर्णचन्द्राभवदनं काकपक्षवृताक्षकम्

His face was like the full moon. His eyelashes were as dark as the wings of crows.

उसका मुख पूर्ण चन्द्रमा के समान था। उसकी पलकें कौवे के पंखों के समान काली थीं।

तं भूमौ पतितं दृष्ट्वा तावकास्ते महारथाः मुदा परमया युक्ताश्चुक्रुशुः सिंहवन्मुहुः

On seeing him lying down on the ground, all the mahāratha-s on your side were supremely delighted. They roared repeatedly, like lions.

उन्हें भूमि पर पड़ा हुआ देखकर आपके पक्ष के सभी महारथी अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए। वे सिंहों के समान बार-बार दहाड़ते थे।

आसीत्परमको हर्षस्तावकानां विशां पते इतरेषां तु वीराणां नेत्रेभ्यः प्रापतज्जलम्

O lord of the earth! Those on your side were overcome with great delight. But tears flowed down from the eyes of those on the other side.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आपके पक्ष के लोग बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। लेकिन दूसरी तरफ मौजूद लोगों की आंखों से आंसू बह निकले.

अभिक्रोशन्ति भूतानि अन्तरिक्षे विशां पते दृष्ट्वा निपतितं वीरं च्युतं चन्द्रमिवाम्बरात्

O lord of the earth! On seeing the brave one fallen down, like the moon dislodged from the firmament, beings were heard to speak in the firmament.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उस वीर को गिरते हुए देखकर, जैसे चंद्रमा आकाश से उखड़ गया, वैसे ही आकाश में प्राणियों को बोलने की आवाज सुनाई दी।

द्रोणकर्णमुखैः षड्भिर्धार्तराष्ट्रैर्महारथैः एकोऽयं निहतः शेते नैष धर्मो मतो हि नः

"With Droṇa and Karṇa at the forefront, this single one has been slain by six mahāratha-s from the side of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. It is our view that this is not dharma."

"द्रोण और कर्ण सबसे आगे रहते हुए, इस अकेले को धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के छह महारथियों ने मार डाला है। हमारा विचार है कि यह धर्म नहीं है।"

तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे बह्वशोभत मेदिनी द्यौर्यथा पूर्णचन्द्रेण नक्षत्रगणमालिनी

When that brave one was killed, the earth looked extremely beautiful, like the full moon in the sky, with a garland of nakṣatra-s.

जब वह वीर मारा गया, तब पृथ्वी नक्षत्रों की माला पहने हुए, आकाश में पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा के समान अत्यंत सुंदर लग रही थी।

रुक्मपुङ्खैश्च संपूर्णा रुधिरौघपरिप्लुता उत्तमाङ्गैश्च वीराणां भ्राजमानैः सकुण्डलैः

It was strewn with gold-tufted arrows and covered with blood. There were the beautiful heads of brave ones, adorned with earrings.

वह सोने के जटित बाणों से युक्त और खून से लथपथ था। वहाँ वीरों के सुन्दर मस्तक थे, जो कुण्डलों से सुशोभित थे।

विचित्रैश्च परिस्तोमैः पताकाभिश्च संवृता चामरैश्च कुथाभिश्च प्रविद्धैश्चाम्बरोत्तमैः

It was strewn with cushions, flags, whisks, carpets, expensive and excellent garments,

वह गद्दियों, झंडों, झंडों, कालीनों, महँगे और उत्कृष्ट वस्त्रों से बिखरा हुआ था।

रथाश्वनरनागानामलंकारैश्च सुप्रभैः खड्गैश्च निशितैः पीतैर्निर्मुक्तैर्भुजगैरिव

extremely dazzling ornaments on chariots, horses, men and elephants, sharp and yellow swords that looked like serpents,

रथों, घोड़ों, मनुष्यों और हाथियों पर अत्यंत चमकदार आभूषण, साँपों की तरह दिखने वाली तेज़ और पीली तलवारें,

चापैश्च विशिखैश्छिन्नैः शक्त्यृष्टिप्रासकम्पनैः विविधैरायुधैश्चान्यैः संवृता भूरशोभत

bows, shattered arrows, lances, scimitars, javelins, kampanā-s and many other kinds of weapons. Strewn with these, it looked extremely beautiful.

धनुष, टूटे हुए तीर, भाले, कैंची, भाला, कम्पाना-एस और कई अन्य प्रकार के हथियार। इनसे बिखरा हुआ यह अत्यंत सुंदर लग रहा था।

वाजिभिश्चापि निर्जीवैः स्वपद्भिः शोणितोक्षितैः सारोहैर्विषमा भूमिः सौभद्रेण निपातितैः

There were dead and dying horses and their riders, covered with blood. They had been brought down by Subhadrā's son and the earth was impassable.

वहाँ मरे हुए घोड़े और उनके सवार खून से लथपथ पड़े थे। उन्हें सुभद्रा के पुत्र द्वारा नीचे लाया गया था और पृथ्वी अगम्य थी।

साङ्कुशैः समहामात्रैः सवर्मायुधकेतुभिः पर्वतैरिव विध्वस्तैर्विशिखोन्मथितैर्गजैः

There were goads and the drivers of elephants, with armour, weapons and standards. The elephants had been mangled and pierced by arrows and looked like mountains.

वहाँ कवच, हथियार और ध्वजों से सुसज्जित रक्षक और हाथियों के चालक थे। हाथी बाणों से क्षत-विक्षत और घायल हो गये थे और पर्वतों के समान दिखाई देने लगे।

पृथिव्यामनुकीर्णैश्च व्यश्वसारथियोधिभिः ह्रदैरिव प्रक्षुभितैर्हतनागै रथोत्तमैः

The earth was covered with these and horses, without their charioteers and warriors. Crushed by slain elephants, the best of chariots looked like lakes.

पृथ्वी इन और घोड़ों से, उनके सारथियों और योद्धाओं के बिना ढकी हुई थी। मारे गये हाथियों द्वारा कुचले गये श्रेष्ठ रथ झीलों के समान दिखने लगे।

पदातिसंघैश्च हतैर्विविधायुधभूषणैः भीरूणां त्रासजननी घोररूपाभवन्मही

There were large numbers of slain infantry, adorned with weapons and ornaments. The earth assumed a terrible form and generated terror among cowards.

वहाँ बड़ी संख्या में मारे गए पैदल सैनिक थे, जो हथियारों और आभूषणों से सुसज्जित थे। पृथ्वी ने भयंकर रूप धारण कर कायरों में आतंक उत्पन्न कर दिया।

तं दृष्ट्वा पतितं भूमौ चन्द्रार्कसदृशद्युतिम् तावकानां परा प्रीतिः पाण्डूनां चाभवद्व्यथा

He was as resplendent as the sun and the moon. On seeing him fallen down on the ground, those on your side were supremely delighted. The Pāṇḍu-s were distressed.

वह सूर्य और चन्द्रमा के समान देदीप्यमान था। उसे भूमि पर गिरा हुआ देखकर आपके पक्ष के लोगों को अत्यधिक प्रसन्नता हुई। पाण्डु परेशान थे.

अभिमन्यौ हते राजञ्शिशुकेऽप्राप्तयौवने संप्राद्रवच्चमूः सर्वा धर्मराजस्य पश्यतः

O king! Abhimanyu was still a child and had not yet attained youth. But he was killed. While Dharmarāja looked on, all the soldiers fled.

हे राजा! अभिमन्यु अभी बालक ही था और अभी युवावस्था को प्राप्त नहीं हुआ था। लेकिन वह मारा गया. जब तक धर्मराज देखते रहे, सभी सैनिक भाग गये।

दीर्यमाणं बलं दृष्ट्वा सौभद्रे विनिपातिते अजातशत्रुः स्वान्वीरानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्

When Subhadrā's son was brought down, Ajātaśatru saw that his army had been shattered and spoke these words to the brave ones on his side.

जब सुभद्रा के पुत्र को नीचे लाया गया, तो अजातशत्रु ने देखा कि उसकी सेना बिखर गई है और उसने अपने पक्ष के बहादुरों से ये शब्द कहे।

स्वर्गमेष गतः शूरो यो हतो नपराङ्मुखः संस्तम्भयत मा भैष्ट विजेष्यामो रणे रिपून्

"The brave one did not retreat and has gone to heaven. Do not be frightened and remain here. We will yet vanquish the enemy in battle."

"बहादुर पीछे नहीं हटा और स्वर्ग चला गया। डरो मत और यहीं रहो। हम फिर भी युद्ध में शत्रु को परास्त करेंगे।"

इत्येवं स महातेजा दुःखितेभ्यो महाद्युतिः धर्मराजो युधां श्रेष्ठो ब्रुवन्दुःखमपानुदत्

In distress, the extremely energetic and extremely radiant one spoke these words. Dharmarāja was the foremost among warriors and spoke thus, to alleviate their misery.

अत्यंत ओजस्वी एवं अत्यंत तेजस्वी ने कष्ट में पड़कर ये शब्द कहे। धर्मराज योद्धाओं में अग्रणी थे और उन्होंने उनके दुख को कम करने के लिए इस प्रकार बात की।

युद्धे ह्याशीविषाकारान्राजपुत्रान्रणे बहून् पूर्वं निहत्य संग्रामे पश्चादार्जुनिरन्वगात्

"He killed many enemy princes in this battle, those who were like venomous serpents. It was only after killing them in battle first that Arjuna's son gave up his life.

"उसने इस युद्ध में कई शत्रु राजकुमारों को मार डाला, जो विषैले सांपों के समान थे। पहले युद्ध में उन्हें मारने के बाद ही अर्जुन के पुत्र ने अपने प्राण त्याग दिए।"

हत्वा दशसहस्राणि कौसल्यं च महारथम् कृष्णार्जुनसमः कार्ष्णिः शक्रसद्म गतो ध्रुवम्

He killed ten thousand and the mahāratha from Kosalā. Kṛṣṇā's son was like Kṛṣṇā and Arjuna and has certainly gone to Śākra's abode.

उसने कोसल के दस हजार और महारथों को मार डाला। कृष्ण का पुत्र कृष्ण और अर्जुन जैसा था और निश्चित रूप से शक्र के निवास पर गया है।

रथाश्वनरमातङ्गान्विनिहत्य सहस्रशः अवितृप्तः स संग्रामादशोच्यः पुण्यकर्मकृत्

He killed thousands of rāṭha-s, horses, men and elephants. But he was still not content with what he had accomplished in battle. He is the performer of auspicious deeds. We should not grieve."

उसने हजारों रथों, घोड़ों, मनुष्यों और हाथियों को मार डाला। लेकिन युद्ध में उसने जो हासिल किया था उससे वह अभी भी संतुष्ट नहीं था। वह शुभ कर्मों का कर्ता है। हमें शोक नहीं मनाना चाहिए।”

वयं तु प्रवरं हत्वा तेषां तैः शरपीडिताः निवेशायाभ्युपायाम सायाह्ने रुधिरोक्षिताः

Having killed the best of their warriors and afflicted by arrows, we returned to your camp in the evening, covered with blood.

हम उनके श्रेष्ठ योद्धाओं को मारकर और बाणों से पीड़ित होकर रक्त से लथपथ होकर संध्या समय आपके शिविर में लौट आये।

निरीक्षमाणास्तु वयं परे चायोधनं शनैः अपयाता महाराज ग्लानिं प्राप्ता विचेतसः

We glanced at the enemy warriors as we slowly departed. O great king! We were overcome with exhaustion and had lost our senses.

जैसे ही हम धीरे-धीरे चले गए, हमने दुश्मन योद्धाओं पर नज़र डाली। हे महान राजा! हम थकावट से उबर चुके थे और अपनी सुध-बुध खो चुके थे।

ततो निशाया दिवसस्य चाशिवः; शिवारुतः संधिरवर्तताद्भुतः कुशेशयापीडनिभे दिवाकरे; विलम्बमानेऽस्तमुपेत्य पर्वतम्

That inauspicious time between day and night arrived. The inauspicious howls of jackals could be heard. The sun was pale red, like the filaments of lotuses. It stretched itself on the mountain behind which it sets.

दिन और रात के बीच का वह अशुभ समय आ गया। सियारों की अशुभ चीखें सुनाई देने लगीं। सूर्य कमल के तंतुओं के समान हल्का लाल था। उसने अपने आप को उस पर्वत पर फैला लिया जिसके पीछे वह स्थापित है।

वरासिशक्त्यृष्टिवरूथचर्मणां; विभूषणानां च समाक्षिपन्प्रभाम् दिवं च भूमिं च समानयन्निव; प्रियां तनुं भानुरुपैति पावकम्

It took away the radiance from our supreme swords, lances, scimitars, bumpers of chariots, shields and ornaments. The earth and the sky could not be differentiated. The sun assumed its beloved form of the fire.

इसने हमारी सर्वोच्च तलवारों, भालों, कैंची, रथों के बम्परों, ढालों और आभूषणों की चमक छीन ली। धरती और आसमान में फर्क नहीं किया जा सका. सूर्य ने अपना प्रिय अग्नि रूप धारण कर लिया।

महाभ्रकूटाचलशृङ्गसंनिभै;र्गजैरनेकैरिव वज्रपातितैः सवैजयन्त्यङ्कुशवर्मयन्तृभि;र्निपातितैर्निष्टनतीव गौश्चिता

There were many giant and immobile carcasses of elephants, like the summits of mountains that had been shattered by the thunderbolt. Their standards and goads were strewn around and riders brought down, like cattle without a cowherd.

वहाँ हाथियों के अनेक विशाल और अचल शव थे, मानो वज्र से टूटे हुए पर्वतों के शिखर हों। उनके झंडे और अंकुश इधर-उधर बिखरे पड़े थे और सवार बिना चरवाहे मवेशियों की तरह नीचे गिर रहे थे।

हतेश्वरैश्चूर्णितपत्त्युपस्करै;र्हताश्वसूतैर्विपताककेतुभिः महारथैर्भूः शुशुभे विचूर्णितैः; पुरैरिवामित्रहतैर्नराधिप

There were slain horses and shattered seats. Horses and charioteers were slain and flags and pennants brought down. O lord of men! The mahāratha-s looked beautiful, deprived of their lives by the enemy.

वहाँ मारे गये घोड़े और टूटी कुर्सियाँ थीं। घोड़ों और सारथियों को मार डाला गया और झंडे और पताकाएँ नीचे गिरा दी गईं। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! शत्रु द्वारा अपने प्राणों से वंचित किए गए मराठा सुंदर लग रहे थे।

रथाश्ववृन्दैः सहसादिभिर्हतैः; प्रविद्धभाण्डाभरणैः पृथग्विधैः निरस्तजिह्वादशनान्त्रलोचनै;र्धरा बभौ घोरविरूपदर्शना

There were masses of chariots and horses, with their slain riders, killed together and separately. Vessels and ornaments were strewn around. Tongues lolled out. Teeth jutted out. Entrails and eyes bulged out. The earth seemed to be extremely terrible.

वहाँ रथों और घोड़ों की भीड़ थी, उनके सवारों को एक साथ और अलग-अलग मार डाला गया था। चारों ओर बर्तन और आभूषण बिखरे हुए थे। जीभें बाहर निकल गईं। दांत बाहर निकल आये. अंतड़ियाँ और आँखें बाहर निकली हुई थीं। पृथ्वी अत्यंत भयानक प्रतीत हो रही थी।

प्रविद्धवर्माभरणा वरायुधा; विपन्नहस्त्यश्वरथानुगा नराः महार्हशय्यास्तरणोचिताः सदा; क्षितावनाथा इव शेरते हताः

There were men with expensive armour and ornaments and the best of weapons. They were destroyed, together with their elephants, horses and chariots. Though they always deserved expensive beds and covers, they were slain and lay down helpless on the ground.

वहाँ महंगे कवच, आभूषण और बेहतरीन हथियारों से लैस लोग थे। वे अपने हाथियों, घोड़ों और रथों सहित नष्ट हो गए। हालाँकि वे हमेशा महंगे बिस्तरों और कवरों के हकदार थे, फिर भी उन्हें मार दिया गया और वे जमीन पर असहाय होकर लेट गए।

अतीव हृष्टाः श्वसृगालवायसा; बडाः सुपर्णाश्च वृकास्तरक्षवः वयांस्यसृक्पान्यथ रक्षसां गणाः; पिशाचसंघाश्च सुदारुणा रणे

Dogs, jackals, crows, wild crows, birds, wolves, hyenas, ravens, others who feed on blood, masses of rākṣasa-s and large numbers of piśāca-s were extremely delighted in that terrible field of battle.

कुत्ते, सियार, कौवे, जंगली कौवे, पक्षी, भेड़िये, लकड़बग्घे, कौवे, खून पीने वाले अन्य लोग, राक्षसों की भीड़ और बड़ी संख्या में पिशाच युद्ध के उस भयानक क्षेत्र में बेहद प्रसन्न थे।

त्वचो विनिर्भिद्य पिबन्वसामसृ;क्तथैव मज्जां पिशितानि चाश्नुवन् वपां विलुम्पन्ति हसन्ति गान्ति च; प्रकर्षमाणाः कुणपान्यनेकशः

They penetrated the skin and fed on the fat, blood and marrow, also eating the flesh. As they tore at the bodies and dragged them away in large numbers, they laughed and sang.

वे त्वचा में प्रवेश करते थे और वसा, रक्त और मज्जा खाते थे, साथ ही मांस भी खाते थे। जैसे ही उन्होंने शवों को फाड़ा और बड़ी संख्या में उन्हें घसीटा, वे हँसे और गाने लगे।

The currents were blood that flowed from the bodies. The chariots were like rafts and the elephants were like rocks. The heads of men were the stones and the flesh was the mud. It flowed along, carrying many weapons like garlands.

धाराएँ खून की थीं जो शरीरों से बह रही थीं। रथ बेड़ों के समान और हाथी चट्टानों के समान थे। मनुष्यों के सिर पत्थर थे और मांस मिट्टी था। वह अनेक अस्त्र-शस्त्र, माला आदि लेकर बहती चली गई।

महाभया वैतरणीव दुस्तरा; प्रवर्तिता योधवरैस्तदा नदी उवाह मध्येन रणाजिरं भृशं; भयावहा जीवमृतप्रवाहिनी

A terrible river of blood was created by the best of warriors. It was extremely fearful, like Vaitaraṇī, and was difficult to traverse. That terrible river flowed in the midst of that field of battle, bearing those from the world of the living to the world of the dead.

सर्वश्रेष्ठ योद्धाओं द्वारा खून की एक भयानक नदी बनाई गई थी। यह वैतरणी के समान अत्यंत भयावह थी और इसे पार करना कठिन था। युद्ध के उस मैदान के बीच में वह भयानक नदी बहती थी, जो जीवित दुनिया से लेकर मृतकों की दुनिया तक को बहा ले जाती थी।

पिबन्ति चाश्नन्ति च यत्र दुर्दृशाः; पिशाचसंघा विविधाः सुभैरवाः सुनन्दिताः प्राणभृतां भयंकराः; समानभक्षाः श्वसृगालपक्षिणः

Large numbers of piśāca-s, horrible to look at, roared in terrible tones as they drank and ate there. They roared loudly, causing terror among those who were still alive. Dogs, jackals and birds also fed there.

बड़ी संख्या में पिशाच, जो देखने में भयानक थे, वहां शराब पीते और खाते समय भयानक स्वर में दहाड़ते थे। वे जोर-जोर से दहाड़ने लगे, जिससे जो लोग जीवित थे उनमें भय व्याप्त हो गया। कुत्ते, सियार और पक्षी भी वहाँ भोजन करते थे।

तथा तदायोधनमुग्रदर्शनं; निशामुखे पितृपतिराष्ट्रसंनिभम् निरीक्षमाणाः शनकैर्जहुर्नराः; समुत्थितारुण्डकुलोपसंकुलम्

As night set in, the warriors glanced at that terrible sight, which was like the kingdom of the lord of the ancestors. The men glanced at that which arose with its terrible banks, and then slowly walked away.

जैसे ही रात हुई, योद्धाओं ने उस भयानक दृश्य को देखा, जो पूर्वजों के स्वामी के राज्य के समान था। उन लोगों ने उस पर नज़र डाली जो अपने भयानक किनारों के साथ उभरी थी, और फिर धीरे-धीरे चले गए।

अपेतविध्वस्तमहार्हभूषणं; निपातितं शक्रसमं महारथम् रणेऽभिमन्युं ददृशुस्तदा जना; व्यपोढहव्यं सदसीव पावकम्

The mahāratha, who was like Śākra himself, was brought down. He lay there, adorned in extremely expensive ornaments. The men saw that Abhimanyu had been killed in the battle, like a sacrificial fire on an altar, into which oblations were no longer being offered.

महारथ, जो स्वयं शक्र के समान था, नीचे लाया गया। वह अत्यंत बहुमूल्य आभूषणों से सुसज्जित होकर वहाँ लेटा हुआ था। लोगों ने देखा कि अभिमन्यु युद्ध में मारा गया है, जैसे वेदी पर यज्ञ की अग्नि, जिसमें अब आहुति नहीं दी जा रही थी।
