संजय उवाच तस्मिन्नहनि निर्वृत्ते घोरे प्राणभृतां क्षये आदित्येऽस्तंगते श्रीमान्संध्याकाल उपस्थिते

Sañjaya said: That terrible day, which had caused a destruction of beings, was over. The sun set and the beautiful twilight presented itself.

संजय ने कहा: वह भयानक दिन, जिसने प्राणियों का विनाश किया था, समाप्त हो गया। सूरज डूब गया और खूबसूरत धुंधलका सामने आ गया।

व्यपयातेषु सैन्येषु वासाय भरतर्षभ हत्वा संशप्तकव्रातान्दिव्यैरस्त्रैः कपिध्वजः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Both sets of soldiers retired to their camps. Having slaughtered the saṃśaptaka-s with his divine weapons, the one with the ape on his banner,

हे भरत वंश में बैल! सैनिकों के दोनों समूह अपने शिविरों में सेवानिवृत्त हो गए। अपने दिव्य अस्त्रों से संशप्तकों का वध करके, अपनी ध्वजा पर वानर सहित,

प्रायात्स्वशिबिरं जिष्णुर्जैत्रमास्थाय तं रथम् गच्छन्नेव च गोविन्दं सन्नकण्ठोऽभ्यभाषत

Jiṣṇu, left for his camp, astride his victorious chariot. As he proceeded, he asked Govinda in a voice that was choked with tears.

जिष्णु अपने विजयी रथ पर सवार होकर अपने शिविर के लिए रवाना हो गया। आगे बढ़ते हुए उन्होंने आंसुओं से भरी आवाज में गोविंदा से पूछा।

किं नु मे हृदयं त्रस्तं वाक्यं सज्जति केशव स्पन्दन्ति चाप्यनिष्टानि गात्रं सीदति चाच्युत

"O Keśava! Why is my heart terrified? Why are my words getting stuck? O Acyuta! Evil portents are agitating me and my body is faltering.

"हे केशव! मेरा हृदय क्यों भयभीत हो रहा है? मेरे शब्द क्यों अटक रहे हैं? हे अच्युता! अशुभ संकेत मुझे उत्तेजित कर रहे हैं और मेरा शरीर लड़खड़ा रहा है।"

अनिष्टं चैव मे श्लिष्टं हृदयान्नापसर्पति भुवि यद्दिक्षु चाप्युग्रा उत्पातास्त्रासयन्ति माम्

It is as if evil thoughts are overwhelming my heart. In every direction, the earth seems to be fierce and the omens are terrifying me.

ऐसा लगता है जैसे बुरे विचार मेरे दिल पर हावी हो रहे हैं। सब दिशाओं में पृथ्वी भयंकर जान पड़ती है और शकुन मुझे भयभीत कर रहे हैं।

बहुप्रकारा दृश्यन्ते सर्व एवाघशंसिनः अपि स्वस्ति भवेद्राज्ञः सामात्यस्य गुरोर्मम

They are seen to be of many different forms and seem to foretell a disaster. I hope the king, my senior, and his advisers, are well."

वे कई अलग-अलग रूपों में दिखाई देते हैं और किसी विपत्ति की भविष्यवाणी करते प्रतीत होते हैं। मुझे आशा है कि राजा, मेरे वरिष्ठ और उनके सलाहकार ठीक हैं।"

वासुदेव उवाच व्यक्तं शिवं तव भ्रातुः सामात्यस्य भविष्यति मा शुचः किंचिदेवान्यत्तत्रानिष्टं भविष्यति

Vāsudeva replied: "It is evident that all is well with your brother and his advisers. Do not sorrow. There may have been some other evil somewhere else."

वासुदेव ने उत्तर दिया: "यह स्पष्ट है कि आपके भाई और उनके सलाहकारों के साथ सब कुछ ठीक है। दुःख मत करो। हो सकता है कि कहीं और कोई अन्य बुराई हो।"

संजय उवाच ततः संध्यामुपास्यैव वीरौ वीरावसादने कथयन्तौ रणे वृत्तं प्रयातौ रथमास्थितौ

Sañjaya said: Those two brave ones performed their evening worship, mounted their chariot and proceeded. They spoke about what had transpired during the day's war, which had destroyed so many heroes.

संजय ने कहा: उन दोनों वीरों ने संध्यावंदन किया, रथ पर चढ़े और आगे बढ़े। उन्होंने इस बारे में बात की कि उस दिन के युद्ध के दौरान क्या हुआ था, जिसने इतने सारे नायकों को नष्ट कर दिया था।

ततः स्वशिबिरं प्राप्तौ हतानन्दं हतत्विषम् वासुदेवोऽर्जुनश्चैव कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्

Having reached their own camp, and after having performed extremely difficult deeds, Vāsudeva and Arjuna found it to be cheerless and full of distress.

अपने-अपने शिविर में पहुँचने पर, और अत्यंत कठिन कार्य करने के बाद, वासुदेव और अर्जुन ने इसे उत्साहहीन और संकट से भरा पाया।

ध्वस्ताकारं समालक्ष्य शिबिरं परवीरहा बीभत्सुरब्रवीत्कृष्णमस्वस्थहृदयस्ततः

Bībhatsu, the destroyer of enemy heroes, noticed that the camp was in a state of disarray. He told Kṛṣṇā with a disturbed heart,

शत्रु नायकों का संहार करने वाले बिभात्सु ने देखा कि शिविर अस्त-व्यस्त था। उन्होंने व्यथित मन से कृष्ण से कहा,

नाद्य नन्दन्ति तूर्याणि मङ्गल्यानि जनार्दन मिश्रा दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः शङ्खाश्चाडम्बरैः सह वीणा वा नाद्य वाद्यन्ते शम्यातालस्वनैः सह

"O Janārdana! The trumpets are not being blown with auspicious sounds. They do not mingle with the sounds of beaten kettledrums, conch shells and drums. The veena is not being sounded, with the sound of the slapping of palms.

"हे जनार्दन! तुरही शुभ ध्वनियों के साथ नहीं बजायी जा रही है। वे पीटे गए ढोल, शंख और ढोल की आवाज के साथ नहीं बज रहे हैं। वीणा हथेलियों की थाप की आवाज के साथ नहीं बज रही है।"

मङ्गल्यानि च गीतानि न गायन्ति पठन्ति च स्तुतियुक्तानि रम्याणि ममानीकेषु बन्दिनः

Auspicious songs are not being sung or recited. The bards are not chanting beautiful words of praise amidst our soldiers.

शुभ गीत गाये या पढ़े नहीं जा रहे हैं. हमारे सैनिकों के बीच में बार्ड प्रशंसा के सुंदर शब्द नहीं बोल रहे हैं।

योधाश्चापि हि मां दृष्ट्वा निवर्तन्ते ह्यधोमुखाः कर्माणि च यथापूर्वं कृत्वा नाभिवदन्ति माम्

On seeing me, the warriors are turning away and are lowering their faces. As on earlier occasions, they are not telling me about the deeds that they have accomplished.

मुझे देखकर योद्धा मुँह फेर रहे हैं और मुँह नीचे कर रहे हैं। पहले की तरह, वे मुझे उन कार्यों के बारे में नहीं बता रहे हैं जो उन्होंने किये हैं।

अपि स्वस्ति भवेदद्य भ्रातृभ्यो मम माधव न हि शुध्यति मे भावो दृष्ट्वा स्वजनमाकुलम्

O Mādhava! I hope that everything has been well with my brothers today. On seeing that those on our side are distressed, I can find no peace of mind.

हे माधव! मुझे उम्मीद है कि आज मेरे भाइयों के साथ सब कुछ अच्छा रहा होगा।' यह देखकर कि हमारे पक्ष के लोग व्यथित हैं, मुझे मानसिक शांति नहीं मिल रही है।

अपि पाञ्चालराजस्य विराटस्य च मानद सर्वेषां चैव योधानां सामग्र्यं स्यान्ममाच्युत

O one who grants honours! O Acyuta! I hope all the warriors, together with the king of Pāñcāla and Virāṭa, are fine.

हे सम्मान देने वाले! हे अच्युत! मुझे आशा है कि पंचाल और विराट के राजा सहित सभी योद्धा ठीक हैं।

न च मामद्य सौभद्रः प्रहृष्टो भ्रातृभिः सह रणादायान्तमुचितं प्रत्युद्याति हसन्निव

Today, with his brothers, Subhadrā's son has not emerged to greet me happily, with a smile on his face, now that I have returned from the battle."

आज, जब मैं युद्ध से लौटा हूं, तो अपने भाइयों के साथ, सुभद्रा का पुत्र चेहरे पर मुस्कान के साथ खुशी से मेरा स्वागत करने के लिए नहीं आया है।"

एवं संकथयन्तौ तौ प्रविष्टौ शिबिरं स्वकम् ददृशाते भृशास्वस्थान्पाण्डवान्नष्टचेतसः

Having conversed in this way, the two of them entered their own camp. They saw the distressed Pāṇḍava-s there, bereft of their senses.

इस प्रकार वार्तालाप करते हुए वे दोनों अपने-अपने शिविर में प्रविष्ट हो गये। उन्होंने वहाँ दुःखी पाण्डवों को अपनी इन्द्रियों से रहित देखा।

दृष्ट्वा भ्रातॄंश्च पुत्रांश्च विमना वानरध्वजः अपश्यंश्चैव सौभद्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्

On seeing his brothers and his sons, but on not seeing Subhadrā's son, the one with the ape on his banner became cheerless and spoke these words.

अपने भाइयों और पुत्रों को देखकर, परंतु सुभद्रा के पुत्र को न देखकर, ध्वजाधारी वानर प्रसन्न हो गया और उसने ये शब्द कहे।

मुखवर्णोऽप्रसन्नो वः सर्वेषामेव लक्ष्यते न चाभिमन्युं पश्यामि न च मां प्रतिनन्दथ

"I notice that all your faces are pale and unhappy. I do not see Abhimanyu. Nor has he come forward to greet me.

"मैंने देखा कि आप सभी के चेहरे पीले और दुखी हैं। मैं अभिमन्यु को नहीं देख पा रहा हूं। न ही वह मुझे बधाई देने के लिए आगे आया है।"

मया श्रुतश्च द्रोणेन चक्रव्यूहो विनिर्मितः न च वस्तस्य भेत्तास्ति ऋते सौभद्रमाहवे

I heard that Droṇa constructed a cakra vyūha today. With the exception of Subhadrā's son, not a single one amongst you knew how to penetrate it in the battle.

मैंने सुना है कि द्रोण ने आज एक चक्रव्यूह का निर्माण किया था। सुभद्रा के पुत्र को छोड़कर, आपमें से कोई भी यह नहीं जानता था कि युद्ध में इसे कैसे भेदा जाए।

न चोपदिष्टस्तस्यासीन्मयानीकविनिर्गमः कच्चिन्न बालो युष्माभिः परानीकं प्रवेशितः

However, I did not teach him about emerging from the array. Did you ask the child to penetrate that enemy array?

हालाँकि, मैंने उसे सरणी से बाहर निकलने के बारे में नहीं सिखाया। क्या आपने बच्चे से उस शत्रु व्यूह को भेदने को कहा था?

भित्त्वानीकं महेष्वासः परेषां बहुशो युधि कच्चिन्न निहतः शेते सौभद्रः परवीरहा

Did Subhadrā's son, the great archer and destroyer of enemy heroes, penetrate that array and fight with many among the enemy? Has he been slain and brought down?

क्या सुभद्रा के पुत्र, महान धनुर्धर और शत्रु नायकों का नाश करने वाले ने उस व्यूह को भेदकर अनेक शत्रुओं से युद्ध किया था? क्या उसे मारकर गिरा दिया गया है?

लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुं जातं सिंहमिवाद्रिषु उपेन्द्रसदृशं ब्रूत कथमायोधने हतः

His eyes were red. He was mighty-armed. He was born and was like a mountain lion. He was the equal of Indra's younger brother. Tell me. Has he been slain in the battle?

उसकी आंखें लाल थीं. वह महाबाहु था। वह पैदा हुआ था और एक पहाड़ी शेर की तरह था। वह इंद्र के छोटे भाई के समकक्ष था। मुझे बताओ। क्या वह युद्ध में मारा गया है?

सुकुमारं महेष्वासं वासवस्यात्मजात्मजम् सदा मम प्रियं ब्रूत कथमायोधने हतः

He was delicate. He was a great archer. He was the son of Vāsava's son. He was always my beloved. Tell me. Has he been slain in the battle?

वह नाजुक था. वह एक महान धनुर्धर था. वह वासव के पुत्र का पुत्र था। वह सदैव मेरा प्रिय था। मुझे बताओ। क्या वह युद्ध में मारा गया है?

वार्ष्णेयीदयितं शूरं मया सततलालितम् अम्बायाश्च प्रियं नित्यं कोऽवधीत्कालचोदितः

He was the beloved of Vārṣṇeya. He was brave. He was always reared by me. He was always loved by his mother. Urged by destiny, who could have killed him?

वह वार्ष्णेय का प्रिय था। वह बहादुर था. वह सदैव मेरे द्वारा पाला गया था। वह हमेशा अपनी माँ से प्यार करते थे। नियति के आग्रह पर, उसे कौन मार सकता था?

सदृशो वृष्णिसिंहस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः विक्रमश्रुतमाहात्म्यैः कथमायोधने हतः

He was the equal of the lion among the Vṛṣṇi-s, the great-souled Keśava. He was valiant, learned and great. Which warrior could have killed him?

वह वृष्णियों में सिंह के समान, महान आत्मा वाले केशव थे। वह वीर, विद्वान और महान था। कौन सा योद्धा उसे मार सकता था?

सुभद्रायाः प्रियं नित्यं द्रौपद्याः केशवस्य च यदि पुत्रं न पश्यामि यास्यामि यमसादनम्

He was always loved by Subhadrā, Draupadī and Keśava. If I do not see my son, I will go to Yāma's abode.

सुभद्रा, द्रौपदी और केशव उनसे सदैव प्रेम करते थे। यदि मैं अपने पुत्र को नहीं देखूंगा तो मैं यम के निवास पर जाऊंगा।

मृदुकुञ्चितकेशान्तं बालं बालमृगेक्षणम् मत्तद्विरदविक्रान्तं शालपोतमिवोद्गतम्

The tips of his hair were delicate and curled. He was a child. His eyes were like that of a young deer. He was as valiant as a crazy elephant. He was as tall as a young śala tree.

उसके बालों के सिरे नाजुक और घुँघराले थे। वह एक बच्चा था. उसकी आँखें एक युवा हिरण की तरह थीं। वह पागल हाथी के समान वीर था। वह एक युवा शाल वृक्ष के समान लंबा था।

स्मिताभिभाषिणं दान्तं गुरुवाक्यकरं सदा बाल्येऽप्यबालकर्माणं प्रियवाक्यममत्सरम्

He smiled when he spoke. He was self-controlled. He was always obedient to the words of his seniors. Even though he was a child, his deeds were like those of one who wasn't a child. His words were pleasant and free of malice.

जब वह बोला तो वह मुस्कुराया। वह आत्मसंयमी थे। वह सदैव अपने वरिष्ठों की बातें मानने वाले थे। हालाँकि वह एक बच्चा था, फिर भी उसके कार्य उस व्यक्ति के समान थे जो बच्चा नहीं था। उनके शब्द सुखद और द्वेष रहित थे।

महोत्साहं महाबाहुं दीर्घराजीवलोचनम् भक्तानुकम्पिनं दान्तं न च नीचानुसारिणम्

He was great in his endeavour. He was mighty-armed. His eyes were long, like the petals of lotuses. He was compassionate towards those who were devoted to him. He was self-controlled. He did not follow that which was inferior.

वह अपने प्रयास में महान थे। वह महाबाहु था। उनकी आंखें कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान लंबी थीं। वह उन लोगों के प्रति दयालु था जो उसके प्रति समर्पित थे। वह आत्मसंयमी थे। उन्होंने उस बात का अनुसरण नहीं किया जो घटिया थी।

कृतज्ञं ज्ञानसंपन्नं कृतास्त्रमनिवर्तिनम् युद्धाभिनन्दिनं नित्यं द्विषतामघवर्धनम्

He was grateful. He possessed learning. He was skilled in the use of weapons. He did not retreat. He always rejoiced in battle and increased terror among the enemies.

वह आभारी था. उनके पास विद्या थी. वह अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में निपुण था। वह पीछे नहीं हटे. वह युद्ध में सदैव आनन्दित रहता था और शत्रुओं में आतंक बढ़ाता था।

स्वेषां प्रियहिते युक्तं पितॄणां जयगृद्धिनम् न च पूर्वप्रहर्तारं संग्रामे नष्टसंभ्रमम् यदि पुत्रं न पश्यामि यास्यामि यमसादनम्

He was engaged in bringing pleasure to those on his own side. He desired the victory of his fathers. He never struck first in an encounter, violating codes of honour. If I do not see that son, I will go to Yāma's abode.

वह अपनी तरफ वालों को खुश करने में लगा हुआ था. वह अपने पिता की विजय चाहता था। उन्होंने सम्मान संहिता का उल्लंघन करते हुए कभी भी मुठभेड़ में पहला हमला नहीं किया। यदि मैं उस पुत्र को नहीं देखूंगा तो मैं यम के लोक में चला जाऊंगा।

सुललाटं सुकेशान्तं सुभ्र्वक्षिदशनच्छदम् अपश्यतस्तद्वदनं का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे

He possessed a beautiful forehead. The tips of his hair were excellent. His eyebrows, eyes, teeth and lips were beautiful. Without seeing that face, how can there be peace in my heart?

उसके पास एक सुंदर माथा था। उसके बालों के सिरे बहुत अच्छे थे. उसकी भौंहें, आँखें, दाँत और होंठ सुन्दर थे। उस चेहरे को देखे बिना मेरे दिल को शांति कैसे मिलेगी?

तन्त्रीस्वनसुखं रम्यं पुंस्कोकिलसमध्वनिम् अशृण्वतः स्वनं तस्य का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे

His words were pleasant and cheerful, like the melody of a male cuckoo. Without hearing those words, how can there be peace in my heart?

उसके शब्द नर कोयल की धुन के समान सुखद और प्रफुल्लित करने वाले थे। उन शब्दों को सुने बिना मेरे हृदय में शांति कैसे हो सकती है?

रूपं चाप्रतिरूपं तत्त्रिदशेष्वपि दुर्लभम् अपश्यतोऽद्य वीरस्य का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे

His beauty was unmatched and is extremely rare, even among the residents of heaven. Without seeing that brave one, how can there be peace in my heart?

उनका सौन्दर्य अप्रतिम था और स्वर्गवासियों में भी वह अत्यन्त दुर्लभ है। उस वीर को देखे बिना मेरे हृदय को शांति कैसे मिलेगी?

अभिवादनदक्षं तं पितॄणां वचने रतम् नाद्याहं यदि पश्यामि का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे

He was skilled in showing honour. He was devoted to the words of his fathers. Without seeing him today, how can there be peace in my heart?

वह आदर-सत्कार करने में कुशल था। वह अपने पिता के वचनों के प्रति समर्पित थे। आज उसे देखे बिना मेरे हृदय को शांति कैसे मिलेगी?

सुकुमारः सदा वीरो महार्हशयनोचितः भूमावनाथवच्छेते नूनं नाथवतां वरः

He was delicate. He was always brave. He deserved the most expensive of beds. That supreme one among those who have protectors is lying down on the bare ground, as if he has no protector.

वह नाजुक था. वह हमेशा बहादुर थे. वह सबसे महंगे बिस्तरों का हकदार था। रक्षकों में से वह परम पुरुष नंगी भूमि पर इस प्रकार लेटा हुआ है, मानो उसका कोई रक्षक ही न हो।

शयानं समुपासन्ति यं पुरा परमस्त्रियः तमद्य विप्रविद्धाङ्गमुपासन्त्यशिवाः शिवाः

Earlier, when he lay down, the best of women tended to him. With his limbs pierced and drained out, he is lying down today, tended to by inauspicious jackals.

पहले, जब वह लेटता था, तो अच्छी-अच्छी महिलाएँ उसकी देखभाल करती थीं। उसके अंगों को छेदकर और सुखाकर, वह आज अशुभ गीदड़ों की देखभाल में लेटा हुआ है।

यः पुरा बोध्यते सुप्तः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः बोधयन्त्यद्य तं नूनं श्वापदा विकृतैः स्वरैः

Earlier, he was awoken from his slumbers by the chants of bards, minstrels and raconteurs. It is certain that he will be awoken today by the distorted tones of beasts of prey.

इससे पहले, वह बार्ड्स, मिनस्ट्रेल्स और रैकोन्टेयर्स के मंत्रोच्चार से अपनी नींद से जाग गया था। यह निश्चित है कि वह आज शिकारी जानवरों के विकृत स्वर से जाग जाएगा।

छत्रच्छायासमुचितं तस्य तद्वदनं शुभम् नूनमद्य रजोध्वस्तं रणे रेणुः करिष्यति

His beautiful face deserved to be covered by the shades of an umbrella. It is certain that it will be soiled today by the dust that has arisen from the field of battle.

उसका खूबसूरत चेहरा छतरी की छाया से ढकने लायक था। यह निश्चित है कि युद्ध के मैदान से उठी धूल से यह आज मलिन हो जायेगा।

हा पुत्रकावितृप्तस्य सततं पुत्रदर्शने भाग्यहीनस्य कालेन यथा मे नीयसे बलात्

Āla-s, my son! Never was I satiated with the sight of you! O unfortunate one, how cruelly has death snatched you away from me!

इला-स, मेरे बेटे! मैं तुम्हें देखकर कभी तृप्त नहीं हुआ! हे अभागे, मृत्यु ने कितनी निर्दयता से तुझे मुझ से छीन लिया है!

साद्य संयमनी नूनं सदा सुकृतिनां गतिः स्वभाभिर्भासिता रम्या त्वयात्यर्थं विराजते

Yāma’s abode has ever been the destination of those with virtuous deeds. Surely, with your own radiance, you have made that beautiful realm even more beautiful today.

यम का निवास सदैव पुण्य कर्म करने वालों का गंतव्य रहा है। निश्चय ही तुमने अपने तेज से आज उस सुन्दर लोक को और भी सुन्दर बना दिया है।

नूनं वैवस्वतश्च त्वा वरुणश्च प्रियातिथिः शतक्रतुर्धनेशश्च प्राप्तमर्चन्त्यभीरुकम्

It is certain that you are the beloved guest of Vaivasvata, Vāruṇa, Śatakratu and the lord of riches and that your valour has obtained honour from them.

यह निश्चित है कि आप वैवस्वत, वरुण, शातक्रतु के प्रिय अतिथि और धन के स्वामी हैं और आपकी वीरता ने उनसे सम्मान प्राप्त किया है।

एवं विलप्य बहुधा भिन्नपोतो वणिग्यथा दुःखेन महताविष्टो युधिष्ठिरमपृच्छत

He lamented thus, in many different ways, like a merchant whose ship has been sunk. Overcome with great misery, he then asked Yudhiṣṭhira.

वह इस प्रकार अनेक प्रकार से उस व्यापारी के समान विलाप करने लगा, जिसका जहाज डूब गया हो। बड़े दुःख से उबरकर उसने फिर युधिष्ठिर से पूछा।

कच्चित्स कदनं कृत्वा परेषां पाण्डुनन्दन स्वर्गतोऽभिमुखः संख्ये युध्यमानो नरर्षभः

"O descendant of the Pāṇḍu lineage! Did he cause great carnage among the enemy? Did that bull among men ascend to heaven after having fought well in the battle?

"हे पांडु वंश के वंशज! क्या उसने शत्रुओं के बीच महान नरसंहार किया? क्या युद्ध में अच्छी तरह से लड़ने के बाद पुरुषों के बीच वह बैल स्वर्ग में चढ़ गया?

स नूनं बहुभिर्यत्तैर्युध्यमानो नरर्षभैः असहायः सहायार्थी मामनुध्यातवान्ध्रुवम्

Did he kill many bulls among men who fought against him? He was without an aide. There is no doubt that he thought of me when he sought help.

क्या उसने उन मनुष्यों में से कई बैलों को मार डाला जो उसके विरुद्ध लड़े थे? वह बिना किसी सहयोगी के था। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि जब उसने मदद मांगी तो उसने मेरे बारे में सोचा।

पीड्यमानः शरैर्बालस्तात साध्वभिधाव माम् इति विप्रलपन्मन्ये नृशंसैर्बहुभिर्हतः

When oppressed by arrows, my young son must have sought help from me. I think he must have lamented in this way when he was cruelly slain by the many.

तीरों से प्रताड़ित होने पर मेरे जवान बेटे ने मुझसे मदद मांगी होगी. मुझे लगता है कि जब कई लोगों ने उसे बेरहमी से मार डाला था तो उसने इसी तरह से विलाप किया होगा।

अथ वा मत्प्रसूतश्च स्वस्रीयो माधवस्य च सुभद्रायां च संभूतो नैवं वक्तुमिहार्हति

But he was my son and that of Mādhava's sister. He was born from Subhadrā. Perhaps he could not have spoken in this way.

लेकिन वह मेरा और माधव की बहन का बेटा था। इनका जन्म सुभद्रा से हुआ था। शायद वो इस तरह से बात नहीं कर सकते थे.

वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं सुदृढं मम अपश्यतो दीर्घबाहुं रक्ताक्षं यन्न दीर्यते

It is certain that my heart is extremely firm and is made out of the essence of the vajra. Despite not being able to see the red-eyed and long-armed one, it is not shattered.

यह निश्चित है कि मेरा हृदय अत्यंत दृढ़ है और वज्र के सार से बना है। लाल आंखों और लंबे हाथों को न देख पाने के बावजूद वह टूटा नहीं है।

कथं बाले महेष्वासे नृशंसा मर्मभेदिनः स्वस्रीये वासुदेवस्य मम पुत्रेऽक्षिपञ्शरान्

How could those cruel and great archers shoot arrows at a child that penetrated the inner organs? He was Vāsudeva's sister's son and my son. How could they shoot arrows at him?

वे क्रूर और महान धनुर्धर एक बालक पर ऐसे बाण कैसे चला सकते थे जो भीतरी अंगों में जा लगे? वह वासुदेव की बहन का बेटा और मेरा बेटा था। वे उस पर तीर कैसे चला सकते थे?

यो मां नित्यमदीनात्मा प्रत्युद्गम्याभिनन्दति उपयान्तं रिपून्हत्वा सोऽद्य मां किं न पश्यति

With an unblemished soul, he always used to greet me when I returned. I have returned after killing the enemy. Why don't I see him today?

मेरे लौटने पर वह निष्कलंक आत्मा के साथ हमेशा मेरा स्वागत करते थे। मैं शत्रु का संहार करके लौटा हूँ। आज मैं उसे क्यों नहीं देख पाता?

नूनं स पतितः शेते धरण्यां रुधिरोक्षितः शोभयन्मेदिनीं गात्रैरादित्य इव पातितः

It is certain that he has fallen down and is lying on the ground, covered in blood. He has made the earth beautiful with his body, like a sun that has fallen down.

इतना तो तय है कि वह गिर गया है और खून से लथपथ जमीन पर पड़ा है. उस ने अपने शरीर से पृय्वी को ढलते हुए सूर्य के समान सुन्दर बना दिया है।

रणे विनिहतं श्रुत्वा शोकार्ता वै विनंक्ष्यति सुभद्रा वक्ष्यते किं मामभिमन्युमपश्यती द्रौपदी चैव दुःखार्ते ते च वक्ष्यामि किं न्वहम्

On hearing that he has been slain in battle, Subhadrā will be miserable and will destroy herself. When she does not see Abhimanyu, what will she tell me? Overcome by grief, what will Draupadī tell me? What will I tell them?

यह सुनकर कि वह युद्ध में मारा गया है, सुभद्रा दुखी हो जाएगी और खुद को नष्ट कर लेगी। जब उसे अभिमन्यु नहीं दिखेगा तो वह मुझसे क्या कहेगी? दु:ख से व्याकुल होकर द्रौपदी मुझसे क्या कहेगी? मैं उन्हें क्या बताऊंगा?

वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं यन्न यास्यति सहस्रधा वधूं दृष्ट्वा रुदतीं शोककर्शिताम्

There is no doubt that my heart is made out of the essence of the vajra. On seeing my daughter-in-law weep, oppressed by sorrow, it is not shattering into a thousand fragments.

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि मेरा हृदय वज्र के रस से बना है। अपनी बहू को दु:ख से पीड़ित होकर रोते देखकर, वह हजार टुकड़ों में टूटकर बिखर नहीं रहा है।

हृष्टानां धार्तराष्ट्राणां सिंहनादो मया श्रुतः युयुत्सुश्चापि कृष्णेन श्रुतो वीरानुपालभन्

I have heard the delighted sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra roar like lions. Kṛṣṇā heard Yuyutsu censure those brave ones in the following words.

मैंने धृतराष्ट्र के प्रसन्न पुत्रों को सिंहों के समान दहाड़ते सुना है। कृष्ण ने युयुत्सु को उन वीरों की निन्दा निम्नलिखित शब्दों में करते हुए सुना।

अशक्नुवन्तो बीभत्सुं बालं हत्वा महारथाः किं नदध्वमधर्मज्ञाः पार्थे वै दृश्यतां बलम्

"O mahāratha-s! Unable to withstand Bībhatsu, you have killed a child. O ones who are against dharma! Why are you rejoicing?

"हे महारथ! बिभात्सु का सामना करने में असमर्थ होकर, तुमने एक बच्चे को मार डाला है। हे धर्म के विरुद्ध लोगों! तुम आनंद क्यों मना रहे हो?"

किं तयोर्विप्रियं कृत्वा केशवार्जुनयोर्मृधे सिंहवन्नदत प्रीताः शोककाल उपस्थिते

You will now witness Pārtha's prowess. In the battle, you have done what is disagreeable to Keśava and Arjuna. The time for sorrow has arrived, yet you are delightedly roaring like lions.

अब आप पार्थ की वीरता देखेंगे। युद्ध में तुमने वह किया है जो केशव और अर्जुन को अप्रिय है। दु:ख का समय आ पहुँचा है, तौभी तुम आनन्द से सिंह की नाईं गरज रहे हो।

आगमिष्यति वः क्षिप्रं फलं पापस्य कर्मणः अधर्मो हि कृतस्तीव्रः कथं स्यादफलश्चिरम्

The time will swiftly arrive for you to reap the fruits of this evil deed. You have performed extremely terrible adharma. How can you not reap the fruits soon? You have performed extremely terrible adharma. How can you not reap the fruits soon?"

तुम्हें इस बुरे कर्म का फल भोगने का समय शीघ्र ही आ जाएगा। तुमने अत्यंत भयंकर अधर्म किया है। आप जल्दी फल कैसे नहीं पा सकते? तुमने अत्यंत भयंकर अधर्म किया है। आप जल्दी फल कैसे नहीं पा सकते?"

इति तान्प्रति भाषन्वै वैश्यापुत्रो महामतिः अपायाच्छस्त्रमुत्सृज्य कोपदुःखसमन्वितः

Rebuking them in this way, the extremely intelligent son of the vaiśya cast his weapons away and departed, overcome by grief and anger.

इस प्रकार उन्हें फटकारते हुए, अत्यंत बुद्धिमान वैश्य के पुत्र ने अपने हथियार फेंक दिए और दुःख और क्रोध से पीड़ित होकर चला गया।

किमर्थमेतन्नाख्यातं त्वया कृष्ण रणे मम अधक्ष्यं तानहं सर्वांस्तदा क्रूरान्महारथान्

O Kṛṣṇā! Why did you not tell me about this while the battle was going on? I would then have slaughtered all those cruel mahāratha-s."

हे कृष्ण! जब लड़ाई चल रही थी तो आपने मुझे इसके बारे में क्यों नहीं बताया? तब मैं उन सभी क्रूर महारथियों का वध कर देता।"

निगृह्य वासुदेवस्तं पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुतम् मैवमित्यब्रवीत्कृष्णस्तीव्रशोकसमन्वितम्

Vāsudeva consoled the one who was overcome with grief on account of his son. He was full of terrible misery and Kṛṣṇā spoke to him in these words.

वासुदेव ने उस व्यक्ति को सान्त्वना दी जो अपने पुत्र के कारण दुःख से पीड़ित था। वह भयानक दुःख से भरा हुआ था और कृष्ण ने उससे इन शब्दों में बात की।

सर्वेषामेष वै पन्थाः शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् क्षत्रियाणां विशेषेण येषां युद्धेन जीविका

"Do not grieve. This is the path followed by all the brave ones who do not retreat, and in particular kṣatriya-s, whose livelihood comes from war.

"शोक मत करो। यह वह मार्ग है जिसका अनुसरण सभी बहादुर लोग करते हैं जो पीछे नहीं हटते हैं, और विशेष रूप से क्षत्रिय, जिनकी आजीविका युद्ध से आती है।

एषा वै युध्यमानानां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् विहिता धर्मशास्त्रज्ञैर्गतिर्गतिमतां वर

This is the path for brave ones who fight and do not retreat. This has been sanctioned by the sacred texts and is the supreme goal for those who follow the objective.

यह उन वीरों का मार्ग है जो लड़ते हैं और पीछे नहीं हटते। इसे पवित्र ग्रंथों द्वारा अनुमोदित किया गया है और यह उन लोगों के लिए सर्वोच्च लक्ष्य है जो इस उद्देश्य का पालन करते हैं।

ध्रुवं युद्धे हि मरणं शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् गतः पुण्यकृतां लोकानभिमन्युर्न संशयः

For brave ones who do not retreat, death is certain in battle. There is no doubt that Abhimanyu has gone to the worlds meant for those with meritorious deeds.

जो वीर पीछे नहीं हटते उनकी युद्ध में मृत्यु निश्चित है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि अभिमन्यु पुण्य कर्मों वाले लोगों के लिए बने लोकों में चला गया है।

एतच्च सर्ववीराणां काङ्क्षितं भरतर्षभ संग्रामेऽभिमुखा मृत्युं प्रप्नुयामेति मानद

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! This is desired by all the brave ones. O one who shows honour! They wish to obtain death, without retreating from battle.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! सभी शूरवीर यही चाहते हैं. हे आदर दिखानेवाले! वे युद्ध से पीछे हटे बिना मृत्यु प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं।

स च वीरान्रणे हत्वा राजपुत्रान्महाबलान् वीरैराकाङ्क्षितं मृत्युं संप्राप्तोऽभिमुखो रणे

The brave one killed many immensely strong princes in the battle. Without retreating from battle, he obtained the death desired by valiant ones.

उस वीर ने युद्ध में अनेक अत्यंत बलशाली राजकुमारों को मार डाला। युद्ध से पीछे हटे बिना, उसने वीरों द्वारा वांछित मृत्यु प्राप्त की।

मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र पूर्वैरेष सनातनः धर्मकृद्भिः कृतो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां रणे क्षयः

O tiger among men! Do not sorrow. Earlier, those who have laid down the eternal codes of dharma have decreed that death in battle is the dharma for kṣatriya-s.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! दुःख मत करो. इससे पहले, जिन लोगों ने धर्म की शाश्वत संहिताएँ निर्धारित की हैं, उन्होंने निर्णय दिया है कि युद्ध में मरना क्षत्रियों का धर्म है।

इमे ते भ्रातरः सर्वे दीना भरतसत्तम त्वयि शोकसमाविष्टे नृपाश्च सुहृदस्तव

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! All your brothers are distressed at seeing you immersed in grief, and so are these kings and well-wishers.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! आपको शोक में डूबा हुआ देखकर आपके सभी भाई और ये राजा और शुभचिंतक भी व्यथित हैं।

एतांस्त्वं वचसा साम्ना समाश्वासय मानद विदितं वेदितव्यं ते न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि

O one who shows honour! Comfort them with words of assurance. This should be known and all this is known to you. You should not grieve."

हे आदर दिखानेवाले! उन्हें आश्वासन के शब्दों से सांत्वना दें। ये पता होना चाहिए और ये सब आपको पता है. तुम्हें शोक नहीं करना चाहिए।”

एवमाश्वासितः पार्थः कृष्णेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ततोऽब्रवीत्तदा भ्रातॄन्सर्वान्पार्थः सगद्गदान्

Having been thus consoled by Kṛṣṇā, the performer of extraordinary deeds, Pārtha spoke these words to all his brothers. His voice choked, Pārtha said,

असाधारण कर्म करने वाले कृष्ण से इस प्रकार सान्त्वना पाकर पार्थ ने अपने सभी भाइयों से ये शब्द कहे। उसकी आवाज रुंध गई, पार्थ ने कहा,

स दीर्घबाहुः पृथ्वंसो दीर्घराजीवलोचनः अभिमन्युर्यथा वृत्तः श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं तथा

"O lord of the earth! His arms were long. His eyes were as long as the petals of lotuses. I wish to hear the account of how Abhimanyu fought.

"हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उसकी भुजाएँ लम्बी थीं। उसकी आँखें कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान लम्बी थीं। अभिमन्यु ने किस प्रकार युद्ध किया, मैं उसका वृत्तान्त सुनना चाहता हूँ।

सनागस्यन्दनहयान्द्रक्ष्यध्वं निहतान्मया संग्रामे सानुबन्धांस्तान्मम पुत्रस्य वैरिणः

You will see me slay my son's enemies in the battle, with their elephants, hariots and horses, with their followers and kin.

तुम मुझे युद्ध में मेरे पुत्र के शत्रुओं, उनके हाथियों, रथों और घोड़ों तथा उनके अनुयायियों और रिश्तेदारों को मारते हुए देखोगे।

कथं च वः कृतास्त्राणां सर्वेषां शस्त्रपाणिनाम् सौभद्रो निधनं गच्छेद्वज्रिणापि समागतः

All of you are skilled in weapons and you held weapons in your hands. How could Subhadrā's son then have been slain, even if he had encountered the wielder of the vajra himself?

तुम सब अस्त्र-शस्त्रविद्या में कुशल हो और तुम्हारे हाथों में शस्त्र थे। फिर सुभद्रा का पुत्र कैसे मारा जा सकता था, भले ही उसका स्वयं वज्रधारी से सामना हुआ हो?

यद्येवमहमज्ञास्यमशक्तान्रक्षणे मम पुत्रस्य पाण्डुपाञ्चालान्मया गुप्तो भवेत्ततः

Had I known that the Pāṇḍu-s and the Pāñcāla-s were incapable of protecting my son in battle, I would have protected him myself.

यदि मैं जानता कि पाण्डु और पंचाल युद्ध में मेरे पुत्र की रक्षा करने में असमर्थ हैं, तो मैं स्वयं उसकी रक्षा करता।

कथं च वो रथस्थानां शरवर्षाणि मुञ्चताम् नीतोऽभिमन्युर्निधनं कदर्थीकृत्य वः परैः

All of you were stationed on your chariots and were shooting arrows. How could the enemy repulse you and kill Abhimanyu?

आप सब लोग अपने रथों पर खड़े होकर तीर चला रहे थे। शत्रु तुम्हें कैसे प्रतिकर्षित कर अभिमन्यु को मार सकता है?

अहो वः पौरुषं नास्ति न च वोऽस्ति पराक्रमः यत्राभिमन्युः समरे पश्यतां वो निपातितः

You have no manliness. Nor do you possess any valour. While you looked on, Abhimanyu has been brought down in the battle.

तुममें कोई मर्दानगी नहीं है. न ही तुम्हारे पास कोई वीरता है. जब तक आपने देखा, अभिमन्यु को युद्ध में गिरा दिया गया है।

आत्मानमेव गर्हेयं यदहं वः सुदुर्बलान् युष्मानाज्ञाय निर्यातो भीरूनकृतनिश्रमान्

Perhaps I should censure myself, since I know that all of you are extremely weak. I went away, knowing that you are useless and cowards.

शायद मुझे अपनी निंदा करनी चाहिए, क्योंकि मैं जानता हूँ कि तुम सब अत्यंत कमज़ोर हो। मैं यह जानकर चला गया कि तुम निकम्मे और कायर हो।

आहोस्विद्भूषणार्थाय वर्मशस्त्रायुधानि वः वाचश्च वक्तुं संसत्सु मम पुत्रमरक्षताम्

Āla-s! Your armour, weapons and arms are only ornaments on your hands. Your words are only meant for assemblies. You could not protect my son."

इला-स! आपके कवच, अस्त्र-शस्त्र तो आपके हाथों के आभूषण मात्र हैं। आपके शब्द केवल सभाओं के लिए हैं। आप मेरे बेटे की रक्षा नहीं कर सके।”

एवमुक्त्वा ततो वाक्यं तिष्ठंश्चापवरासिमान् न स्माशक्यत बीभत्सुः केनचित्प्रसमीक्षितुम्

Having spoken these words, he sat down, with the supreme bow and sword in his hands. No one was capable of looking at Bībhatsu then.

यह कहकर वह सर्वोच्च धनुष और तलवार हाथ में लेकर बैठ गया। तब कोई भी बिभात्सु की ओर देखने में सक्षम नहीं था।

तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धं निःश्वसन्तं मुहुर्मुहुः पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तमश्रुपूर्णमुखं तदा

He sighed repeatedly in anger and looked like the Destroyer himself. He was overcome with grief on account of his son and his face was bathed in tears.

वह क्रोध में बार-बार आहें भरता था और स्वयं विध्वंसक की तरह दिखता था। वह अपने पुत्र के दुःख से अभिभूत हो गया और उसका चेहरा आँसुओं से नहा गया।

नाभिभाष्टुं शक्नुवन्ति द्रष्टुं वा सुहृदोऽर्जुनम् अन्यत्र वासुदेवाद्वा ज्येष्टाद्वा पाण्डुनन्दनात्

With the exception of Vāsudeva and the eldest son of Pāṇḍu, no one amongst the well-wishers was capable of glancing at him, or speaking to him.

वासुदेव और पांडु के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र को छोड़कर, शुभचिंतकों में से कोई भी उनकी ओर देखने या उनसे बात करने में सक्षम नहीं था।

सर्वास्ववस्थासु हितावर्जुनस्य मनोनुगौ बहुमानात्प्रियत्वाच्च तावेनं वक्तुमर्हतः

Those two were always acceptable to Arjuna and he listened to them. They were extremely revered and dearly loved and could speak to him at such times.

वे दोनों अर्जुन को सदैव स्वीकार्य थे और वह उनकी बात सुनता था। वे अत्यंत आदरणीय थे और बहुत प्यार करते थे और ऐसे समय में उनसे बात कर सकते थे।

ततस्तं पुत्रशोकेन भृशं पीडितमानसम् राजीवलोचनं क्रुद्धं राजा वचनमब्रवीत्

On account of his son, his mind was distressed and he was full of sorrow. The king spoke these words to the enraged one, whose eyes were like the petals of lotuses.

अपने पुत्र के कारण उसका मन व्यथित था और वह दुःख से भरा हुआ था। राजा ने क्रोधित उस व्यक्ति से ये शब्द कहे, जिसकी आँखें कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान थीं।
