संजय उवाच नकुलं रभसं युद्धे निघ्नन्तं वाहिनीं तव अभ्ययात्सौबलः क्रुद्धस्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्

Sañjaya said: In that battle, Nākula was impetuously slaughtering your soldiers. Enraged, Saubala advanced against him, asking him to wait.

संजय ने कहा- उस युद्ध में नकुल आपके सैनिकों का बड़े उत्साह से संहार कर रहा था। क्रोधित होकर, सौबाला उसके खिलाफ आगे बढ़ी और उसे इंतजार करने के लिए कहा।

कृतवैरौ तु तौ वीरावन्योन्यवधकाङ्क्षिणौ शरैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैरन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः

Those two brave ones were firm in their enmity and wished to kill each other. They drew their bows completely back and struck each other with arrows.

वे दोनों वीर अपनी-अपनी शत्रुता में दृढ़ थे और एक-दूसरे को मार डालना चाहते थे। उन्होंने अपने धनुष बिल्कुल पीछे खींच लिये और एक दूसरे पर बाणों से प्रहार करने लगे।

यथैव सौबलः क्षिप्रं शरवर्षाणि मुञ्चति तथैव नकुलो राजञ्शिक्षां संदर्शयन्युधि

O king! Just as Saubala swiftly released showers of arrows, Nākula also exhibited his skills in fighting.

हे राजा! जिस प्रकार सौबाला ने तेजी से बाणों की वर्षा की, उसी प्रकार नकुल ने भी युद्ध कौशल का प्रदर्शन किया।

तावुभौ समरे शूरौ शरकण्टकिनौ तदा व्यराजेतां महाराज कण्टकैरिव शाल्मली

O great king! Then, in that battle, those two brave warriors, covered with the thorns of arrows, shone like śālmali trees with thorns.

हे महान राजा! तब उस युद्ध में बाणों के काँटों से आच्छादित वे दोनों वीर काँटों से युक्त शाल्मली वृक्षों के समान चमकने लगे।

सुजिह्मं प्रेक्षमाणौ च राजन्विवृतलोचनौ क्रोधसंरक्तनयनौ निर्दहन्तौ परस्परम्

O king! They dilated their eyes and glanced obliquely at each other. Their eyes were red with rage and they consumed each other with their sight.

हे राजा! उन्होंने अपनी आँखें फैलाईं और एक-दूसरे की ओर तिरछी नज़र से देखा। उनकी आंखें क्रोध से लाल हो गईं और उन्होंने अपनी दृष्टि से एक दूसरे को भस्म कर दिया।

स्यालस्तु तव संक्रुद्धो माद्रीपुत्रं हसन्निव कर्णिनैकेन विव्याध हृदये निशितेन ह

Your brother-in-law was extremely angry and laughing at Mādrī's son, pierced him in the heart with a sharp and barbed arrow.

आपके जीजाजी ने अत्यन्त क्रोधित होकर माद्रीपुत्र पर हँसते हुए एक तीक्ष्ण एवं कंटीले बाण से उनके हृदय को बींध डाला।

नकुलस्तु भृशं विद्धः स्यालेन तव धन्विना निषसाद रथोपस्थे कश्मलं चैनमाविशत्

Having been severely wounded by your archer brother-in-law, Nākula sank down on the floor of his chariot and lost his senses.

आपके धनुर्धर बहनोई द्वारा गंभीर रूप से घायल होने के बाद, नकुल अपने रथ के फर्श पर गिर गया और अपनी इंद्रियाँ खो बैठा।

अत्यन्तवैरिणं दृप्तं दृष्ट्वा शत्रुं तथागतम् ननाद शकुनी राजंस्तपान्ते जलदो यथा

O king! Beholding that his ultimate and insolent enemy, firm in his enmity, was in that state, Śākuni roared like a cloud at the end of summer.

हे राजा! यह देखकर कि उसका परम और ढीठ शत्रु, अपनी शत्रुता में दृढ़ था, उस अवस्था में था, शकुनि ने ग्रीष्म के अंत में बादल की तरह गर्जना की।

प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां नकुलः पाण्डुनन्दनः अभ्ययात्सौबलं भूयो व्यात्तानन इवान्तकः

Having regained his senses, Nākula, Pāṇḍu's son, rushed against Saubala again, like Death with a gaping mouth.

होश में आने पर, पांडु के पुत्र नकुल, मौत की तरह मुंह फैलाए हुए, फिर से सौबल पर टूट पड़े।

संक्रुद्धः शकुनिं षष्ट्या विव्याध भरतर्षभ पुनश्चैव शतेनैव नाराचानां स्तनान्तरे

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Enraged, he pierced Śākuni with sixty arrows. He again struck him between the breasts with one hundred iron arrows.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! क्रोधित होकर उसने शकुनि को साठ बाणों से घायल कर दिया। उसने फिर एक सौ लोहे के बाणों से उसकी छाती के बीच में प्रहार किया।

ततोऽस्य सशरं चापं मुष्टिदेशे स चिच्छिदे ध्वजं च त्वरितं छित्त्वा रथाद्भूमावपातयत्

He then severed the bow in his hand, with an arrow still affixed to it. He swiftly severed his standard and brought it down from the chariot onto the ground.

फिर उसने अपने हाथ में मौजूद धनुष को तोड़ दिया, उस पर अभी भी एक बाण लगा हुआ था। उसने तेजी से अपना ध्वज तोड़ा और उसे रथ से नीचे जमीन पर गिरा दिया।

सोऽतिविद्धो महाराज रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् तं विसंज्ञं निपतितं दृष्ट्वा स्यालं तवानघ अपोवाह रथेनाशु सारथिर्ध्वजिनीमुखात्

O great king! O unblemished one! Having been severely wounded, your brother-in-law sank down on the floor of his chariot and in the forefront of that army, on seeing that he had fallen down and had lost his senses, his charioteer quickly bore him away on his chariot.

हे महान राजा! हे निष्कलंक! आपके जीजाजी गंभीर रूप से घायल होकर अपने रथ के फर्श पर गिर पड़े और उस सेना में सबसे आगे, यह देखकर कि वे गिर पड़े हैं और अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे हैं, उनके सारथी ने शीघ्रता से उन्हें अपने रथ पर बैठा लिया।

ततः संचुक्रुशुः पार्था ये च तेषां पदानुगाः निर्जित्य च रणे शत्रून्नकुलः शत्रुतापनः अब्रवीत्सारथिं क्रुद्धो द्रोणानीकाय मां वह

The Pārtha-s and their followers roared loudly. Having vanquished the enemy in the encounter, Nākula, the scorcher of enemies, angrily told his charioteer, "Take me to Droṇa's battle formation."

पार्थ और उनके अनुयायी जोर-जोर से गर्जना करने लगे। मुठभेड़ में शत्रु को परास्त करने के बाद, शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले नकुल ने गुस्से में अपने सारथी से कहा, "मुझे द्रोण की युद्ध संरचना में ले चलो।"

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा माद्रीपुत्रस्य धीमतः प्रायात्तेन रणे राजन्येन द्रोणोऽन्वयुध्यत

O king! On hearing the words of Mādrī's intelligent son, in the battle, his charioteer took him to the spot where Droṇa was fighting.

हे राजा! युद्ध में माद्री के बुद्धिमान पुत्र की बातें सुनकर उसका सारथी उसे उस स्थान पर ले गया जहाँ द्रोण युद्ध कर रहे थे।

शिखण्डिनं तु समरे द्रोणप्रेप्सुं विशां पते कृपः शारद्वतो यत्तः प्रत्युद्गच्छत्सुवेगितः

O lord of the earth! In that encounter, Shikandi wished to get at Droṇa. With great speed, Śāradvata Kṛpa sought to check him.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उस मुठभेड़ में, शिखंडी द्रोण तक पहुंचना चाहता था। बड़ी तेजी से, शरद्वात कृपा ने उन्हें जांचना चाहा।

गौतमं द्रुतमायान्तं द्रोणान्तिकमरिंदमम् विव्याध नवभिर्भल्लैः शिखण्डी प्रहसन्निव

Gautama swiftly advanced in Droṇa's vicinity. Śikhaṇḍī, the scorcher of enemies, seemed to be laughing, and pierced him with nine broad-headed arrows.

गौतम तेजी से द्रोण के आसपास आगे बढ़े। शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाला शिखंडी हंसता हुआ प्रतीत हुआ और उसने नौ चौड़े सिर वाले बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

तमाचार्यो महाराज विद्ध्वा पञ्चभिराशुगैः पुनर्विव्याध विंशत्या पुत्राणां प्रियकृत्तव

O great king! The preceptor wished to do that which would ensure the welfare of your sons. He struck him with five swift arrows and again pierced him with twenty.

हे महान राजा! गुरु ऐसा करना चाहते थे जिससे आपके पुत्रों का कल्याण हो। उसने पाँच वेगशाली बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया और फिर बीस बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

महद्युद्धं तयोरासीद्घोररूपं विशां पते यथा देवासुरे युद्धे शम्बरामरराजयोः

O lord of the earth! The great battle that took place between them was terrible in form, like the encounter between Śambara and the king of the immortals in the battle between the gods and the āsura-s.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उनके बीच जो महान युद्ध हुआ वह भयानक रूप में था, जैसे देवताओं और असुरों के बीच युद्ध में शंबर और अमरों के राजा के बीच मुठभेड़।

शरजालावृतं व्योम चक्रतुस्तौ महारथौ प्रकृत्या घोररूपं तदासीद्घोरतरं पुनः

The two mahāratha-s covered the sky with nets of arrows. O foremost among the Bhārata-s! The night was naturally fierce in form and was rendered even more terrible by those two warriors, who were skilled in fighting.

दोनों महारथियों ने आकाश को बाणों के जाल से ढक दिया। हे भरतवंशियों में अग्रगण्य! उस रात का स्वरूप स्वाभाविक रूप से भयंकर था और उन दो योद्धाओं ने, जो युद्ध में कुशल थे, उसे और भी भयानक बना दिया था।

रात्रिश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ योधानां युद्धशालिनाम् कालरात्रिनिभा ह्यासीद्घोररूपा भयावहा

It was terrible in form and engendered fear. It was like a night of destruction.

इसका रूप भयानक था और भय उत्पन्न करने वाला था। यह विनाश की रात की तरह थी।

शिखण्डी तु महाराज गौतमस्य महद्धनुः अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद सज्यं सविशिखं तदा

O great king! With an arrow that was in the shape of a half-moon, Shikandi sliced down Gautama's giant bow and shot many arrows at him.

हे महान राजा! शिखंडी ने अर्धचंद्र के आकार के बाण से गौतम के विशाल धनुष को काट डाला और उन पर कई बाण छोड़े।

तस्य क्रुद्धः कृपो राजञ्शक्तिं चिक्षेप दारुणाम् स्वर्णदण्डामकुण्ठाग्रां कर्मारपरिमार्जिताम्

O king! Kṛpa became angry at this and hurled a fierce javelin. The shaft was golden and it was sharp at the tip, having been polished by artisans.

हे राजा! इस पर कृप क्रोधित हो गये और उन्होंने एक भयंकर भाला फेंका। शाफ्ट सुनहरा था और कारीगरों द्वारा पॉलिश किए जाने के कारण इसकी नोक तेज थी।

तामापतन्तीं चिच्छेद शिखण्डी बहुभिः शरैः सापतन्मेदिनीं दीप्ता भासयन्ती महाप्रभा

As it descended, Śikhaṇḍī struck it down with many arrows. It flamed as it fell down on the ground, dazzling and immensely radiant.

जैसे ही वह नीचे उतरा, शिखंडी ने कई बाणों से उसे मार गिराया। जैसे ही वह जमीन पर गिरा, वह चमकने लगा, चमकदार और अत्यधिक दीप्तिमान।

अथान्यद्धनुरादाय गौतमो रथिनां वरः प्राच्छादयच्छितैर्बाणैर्महाराज शिखण्डिनम्

O great king! Gautama, supreme among rāṭha-s, picked up another bow and shrouded Śikhaṇḍī with sharp arrows.

हे महान राजा! रथियों में श्रेष्ठ गौतम ने दूसरा धनुष उठाया और शिखंडी को तीखे बाणों से घेर लिया।

स छाद्यमानः समरे गौतमेन यशस्विना व्यषीदत रथोपस्थे शिखण्डी रथिनां वरः

Śikhaṇḍī, supreme among rāṭha-s, was enveloped in that encounter by the illustrious Gautama and losing his senses, sank down on the floor of his chariot.

रथियों में श्रेष्ठ शिखंडी उस मुठभेड़ में महामहिम गौतम से घिर गया और अपनी इंद्रियाँ खोकर अपने रथ के फर्श पर गिर पड़ा।

सीदन्तं चैनमालोक्य कृपः शारद्वतो युधि आजघ्ने बहुभिर्बाणैर्जिघांसन्निव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Beholding that he had become unconscious in the battle, Śāradvata Kṛpa wished to kill him and struck him with many arrows.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह देखकर कि वह युद्ध में बेहोश हो गया था, शरद्वत कृपा ने उसे मारने की इच्छा की और उसे कई बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

विमुखं तं रणे दृष्ट्वा याज्ञसेनिं महारथम् पाञ्चालाः सोमकाश्चैव परिवव्रुः समन्ततः

Seeing that Yajñasena's mahāratha son could no longer fight in the encounter, the Pāñcāla-s and the Somaka-s surrounded him from all sides.

यह देखकर कि यज्ञसेन का महारथ पुत्र अब मुठभेड़ में नहीं लड़ सकता, पंचालों और सोमकों ने उसे चारों ओर से घेर लिया।

तथैव तव पुत्राश्च परिवव्रुर्द्विजोत्तमम् महत्या सेनया सार्धं ततो युद्धमभूत्पुनः

Similarly, your sons also surrounded that best of brāhmana-s with a large army and the battle resumed again.

इसी प्रकार आपके पुत्रों ने भी बड़ी सेना लेकर उन श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों को घेर लिया और पुनः युद्ध आरम्भ हो गया।

रथानां च रणे राजन्नन्योन्यमभिधावताम् बभूव तुमुलः शब्दो मेघानां नदतामिव

O king! In that encounter, rāṭha-s rushed against others. There was a tremendous sound, like that of clouds thundering.

हे राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में, रथ-एस दूसरों के खिलाफ दौड़ पड़े। बादलों के गरजने जैसी जबरदस्त आवाज हुई।

द्रवतां सादिनां चैव गजानां च विशां पते अन्योन्यमभितो राजन्क्रूरमायोधनं बभौ

O lord of the earth! Horse riders and elephants were driven away. O king! They attacked each other and the field of battle became cruel.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! घुड़सवारों और हाथियों को खदेड़ दिया गया। हे राजा! उन्होंने एक-दूसरे पर आक्रमण किया और युद्ध का मैदान क्रूर हो गया।

पत्तीनां द्रवतां चैव पदशब्देन मेदिनी अकम्पत महाराज भयत्रस्तेव चाङ्गना

O great king! As the foot soldiers rushed, the earth trembled with their footsteps, like a lady trembling with fear.

हे महान राजा! जैसे ही पैदल सैनिक दौड़े, पृथ्वी उनके कदमों से कांप उठी, जैसे कोई महिला डर से कांप रही हो।

रथा रथान्समासाद्य प्रद्रुता वेगवत्तरम् न्यगृह्णन्बहवो राजञ्शलभान्वायसा इव

Rāṭha-s attacked even more powerfully, astride their chariots. O king! They were like crows, grabbing many locusts in the air.

रथियों ने अपने रथों पर सवार होकर और भी अधिक शक्तिशाली ढंग से आक्रमण किया। हे राजा! वे कौवों के समान थे, जो हवा में बहुत सी टिड्डियों को पकड़ लेते थे।

तथा गजान्प्रभिन्नांश्च सुप्रभिन्ना महागजाः तस्मिन्नेव पदे यत्ता निगृह्णन्ति स्म भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There were elephants with shattered temples, rushing against other giant elephants with shattered temples and trampling them with their feet.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वहाँ टूटे हुए मंदिरों वाले हाथी थे, जो टूटे हुए मंदिरों वाले अन्य विशाल हाथियों के खिलाफ दौड़ रहे थे और उन्हें अपने पैरों से रौंद रहे थे।

सादी सादिनमासाद्य पदाती च पदातिनम् समासाद्य रणेऽन्योन्यं संरब्धा नातिचक्रमुः

Horse riders clashed against horse riders and infantry against infantry. In that encounter, they angrily rushed against each other.

घुड़सवारों का घुड़सवारों से और पैदल सेना का पैदल सेना से टकराव हुआ। उस मुठभेड़ में, वे गुस्से में एक-दूसरे पर टूट पड़े।

धावतां द्रवतां चैव पुनरावर्ततामपि बभूव तत्र सैन्यानां शब्दः सुतुमुलो निशि

The soldiers advanced, retreated and returned again to the encounter. In the process, in the night, they raised an extremely loud uproar.

सैनिक आगे बढ़े, पीछे हटे और फिर से मुठभेड़ में लौट आए। इस क्रम में रात में उन्होंने बेहद जोरदार हंगामा किया.

दीप्यमानाः प्रदीपाश्च रथवारणवाजिषु अदृश्यन्त महाराज महोल्का इव खाच्च्युताः

There were blazing lamps on the chariots, elephants and horses. O great king! They seemed to be like giant meteors that had been dislodged from the sky.

रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों पर जगमगाते दीपक जल रहे थे। हे महान राजा! वे आकाश से उखड़े हुए विशाल उल्काओं के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे।

सा निशा भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रदीपैरवभासिता दिवसप्रतिमा राजन्बभूव रणमूर्धनि

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! O king! The field of battle was illuminated by those lamps and it seemed to be like day.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! हे राजा! उन दीपकों से युद्धभूमि जगमगा उठी और दिन जैसा प्रतीत होने लगा।

आदित्येन यथा व्याप्तं तमो लोके प्रणश्यति तथा नष्टं तमो घोरं दीपैर्दीप्तैरलंकृतम्

It was like a spreading sun that destroys the darkness in the world. In that fashion, that terrible darkness was dispelled by the light of those blazing lamps.

यह एक फैलते सूरज की तरह था जो दुनिया में अंधेरे को नष्ट कर देता है। इस प्रकार उन जलते हुए दीपकों के प्रकाश से वह भयानक अंधकार दूर हो गया।

शस्त्राणां कवचानां च मणीनां च महात्मनाम् अन्तर्दधुः प्रभाः सर्वा दीपैस्तैरवभासिताः

All the weapons, the armour and the gems of the great-souled ones were overshadowed by the light from those blazing lamps.

उन जगमगाते दीपकों के प्रकाश से महात्माओं के सारे हथियार, कवच और रत्न ढक गये।

तस्मिन्कोलाहले युद्धे वर्तमाने निशामुखे अवधीत्समरे पुत्रं पिता भरतसत्तम

At the commencement of the night, there was a melee in the battle. O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! In that encounter, the son killed the father and the father killed the son.

रात्रि प्रारम्भ होते ही युद्ध में हाथापाई होने लगी। हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! उस मुठभेड़ में बेटे ने पिता को और पिता ने बेटे को मार डाला.

पुत्रश्च पितरं मोहात्सखायं च सखा तथा संबन्धिनं च संबन्धी स्वस्रीयं चापि मातुलः

The friend killed the friend, the relative killed the relative and the maternal uncle killed his sister's son.

दोस्त ने दोस्त को, रिश्तेदार ने रिश्तेदार को और मामा ने अपनी बहन के बेटे को मार डाला।

स्वे स्वान्परे परांश्चापि निजघ्नुरितरेतरम् निर्मर्यादमभूद्युद्धं रात्रौ घोरं भयावहम्

They were confused. In that battle, they killed those on their own side, as well as on that of the enemy. They fought fearlessly during that terrible night and this engendered fear.

वे भ्रमित थे. उस युद्ध में, उन्होंने अपने पक्ष के लोगों के साथ-साथ शत्रुओं को भी मार डाला। वे उस भयानक रात के दौरान निडर होकर लड़े और इससे भय उत्पन्न हुआ।
