संजय उवाच सोमदत्तं तु संप्रेक्ष्य विधुन्वानं महद्धनुः सात्यकिः प्राह यन्तारं सोमदत्ताय मां वह

Sañjaya said: On seeing Somadatta stretch his large bow, Sātyaki addressed his charioteer. "Take me towards Somadatta.

संजय ने कहा: सोमदत्त को अपना विशाल धनुष तानते हुए देखकर, सात्यकि ने अपने सारथी को संबोधित किया। “मुझे सोमदत्त की ओर ले चलो.

न ह्यहत्वा रणे शत्रुं बाह्लीकं कौरवाधमम् निवर्तिष्ये रणात्सूत सत्यमेतद्वचो मम

Without killing the enemy, Bahlika's son and the worst of the Kaurava-s, in the battle today, I will not return from the encounter. O sūta! I tell you this truthfully.

आज युद्ध में बाह्लीक के पुत्र और कौरवों में सबसे बड़े शत्रु को मारे बिना मैं युद्ध से नहीं लौटूंगा। हे सुता! यह बात मैं तुमसे सच-सच कहता हूँ।

ततः संप्रेषयद्यन्ता सैन्धवांस्तान्महाजवान् तुरङ्गमाञ्शङ्खवर्णान्सर्वशब्दातिगान्रणे

Thus addressed, the charioteer urged those extremely fast horses from the Saindhava region. They possessed the complexion of conch shells and were capable of withstanding all sounds in the battle.

इस प्रकार कहकर सारथी ने सैन्धव क्षेत्र के उन अत्यंत तीव्र गति वाले घोड़ों को आग्रह किया। उनका रंग शंख के समान था और वे युद्ध में सभी ध्वनियों को सहन करने में सक्षम थे।

तेऽवहन्युयुधानं तु मनोमारुतरंहसः यथेन्द्रं हरयो राजन्पुरा दैत्यवधोद्यतम्

They were as fast as thought or the wind and bore Yuyudhāna. O king! They were like Indra's tawny steeds in earlier times, when he ventured to kill the daitya-s.

वे विचार या वायु के समान तेज़ थे और युयुधान को सहन करते थे। हे राजा! वे पहले के समय में इंद्र के घोड़े की तरह थे, जब उसने दैत्यों को मारने का साहस किया था।

तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य सात्वतं रभसं रणे सोमदत्तो महाबाहुरसंभ्रान्तोऽभ्यवर्तत

On seeing that Sātvata was powerfully descending in the encounter, the mighty-armed Somadatta was not frightened and attacked him.

यह देखकर कि सात्वत मुठभेड़ में शक्तिशाली रूप से उतर रहा था, शक्तिशाली-बाहु सोमदत्त भयभीत नहीं हुआ और उस पर हमला कर दिया।

विमुञ्चञ्शरवर्षाणि पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् छादयामास शैनेयं जलदो भास्करं यथा

He released showers of arrows, like clouds showering down rain. He shrouded Śini's descendant, like clouds covering the sun.

उसने बाणों की वर्षा छोड़ी, जैसे बादल वर्षा करते हों। उसने सिनी के वंशज को ऐसे ढक लिया, जैसे बादल सूरज को ढक लेते हैं।

असंभ्रान्तश्च समरे सात्यकिः कुरुपुंगवम् छादयामास बाणौघैः समन्ताद्भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Sātyaki was also not frightened in that battle. In every direction, he enveloped the bull among the Kuru lineage with a torrent of arrows.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! सात्यकि भी उस युद्ध में भयभीत नहीं हुए। उन्होंने सभी दिशाओं में बाणों की वर्षा से कुरु वंश के बैल को आच्छादित कर दिया।

सोमदत्तस्तु तं षष्ट्या विव्याधोरसि माधवम् सात्यकिश्चापि तं राजन्नविध्यत्सायकैः शितैः

Somadatta pierced Mādhava in the chest with sixty arrows. O king! Sātyaki pierced him back with sharp arrows.

सोमदत्त ने साठ बाणों से माधव की छाती में छेद कर दिया। हे राजा! सात्यकि ने उसे तीखे बाणों से बींध डाला।

तावन्योन्यं शरैः कृत्तौ व्यराजेतां नरर्षभौ सुपुष्पौ पुष्पसमये पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ

Wounded by each other's arrows, those bulls among men looked resplendent. They were like blossoming kiṃśuka trees with beautiful blossoms at the time of flowering.

एक दूसरे के बाणों से घायल होकर वे नरश्रेष्ठ शोभायमान हो रहे थे। वे फूल खिलने के समय सुंदर फूलों वाले खिले हुए किंशुका वृक्षों के समान थे।

रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गौ कुरुवृष्णियशस्करौ परस्परमवेक्षेतां दहन्ताविव लोचनैः

The limbs of the illustrious ones from the Kuru and Vṛṣṇi lineages were covered with blood. They glanced at each other and seemed to burn each other down with their sight.

कुरु और वृष्णि वंश के प्रतिष्ठित लोगों के अंग रक्त से लथपथ थे। उन्होंने एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा और ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे वे अपनी दृष्टि से एक-दूसरे को जला रहे हों।

रथमण्डलमार्गेषु चरन्तावरिमर्दनौ घोररूपौ हि तावास्तां वृष्टिमन्ताविवाम्बुदौ

Those scorchers of enemies roamed around in chariots that traversed circular paths. They were terrible in form and were like clouds that showered down rain.

शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले वे रथों पर सवार होकर वृत्ताकार पथों पर भ्रमण करते थे। वे भयानक रूप में थे और वर्षा बरसाने वाले बादलों के समान थे।

शरसंभिन्नगात्रौ तौ सर्वतः शकलीकृतौ श्वाविधाविव राजेन्द्र व्यदृश्येतां शरक्षतौ

O Indra among kings! With arrows mangling their bodies everywhere and wounded by those arrows, they looked like porcupines.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! बाणों से उनके शरीर जहां-तहां क्षत-विक्षत हो गये थे और उन बाणों से घायल होकर वे साही के समान दिख रहे थे।

सुवर्णपुङ्खैरिषुभिराचितौ तौ व्यरोचताम् खद्योतैरावृतौ राजन्प्रावृषीव वनस्पती

Struck by arrows with golden feathers, they shone brightly, O king! They looked like trees in the monsoon season, covered with fireflies.

सुनहरे पंखों वाले बाणों से घायल होकर वे बहुत चमक रहे थे, हे राजा! वे बरसात के मौसम में जुगनूओं से ढके हुए पेड़ों की तरह दिखते थे।

संप्रदीपितसर्वाङ्गौ सायकैस्तौ महारथौ अदृश्येतां रणे क्रुद्धावुल्काभिरिव कुञ्जरौ

The limbs of the mahāratha-s blazed with those arrows. In that battle, they looked like angry elephants, covered with flaming torches.

उन बाणों से महारथियों के अंग-प्रत्यंग दग्ध हो गये। उस युद्ध में वे क्रोधित हाथियों के समान दिख रहे थे, जो जलती हुई मशालों से ढके हुए थे।

ततो युधि महाराज सोमदत्तो महारथः अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद माधवस्य महद्धनुः

O great king! In that encounter, mahāratha Somadatta used an arrow in the shape of a half-moon to slice down Mādhava's great bow.

हे महान राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में, महारथ सोमदत्त ने माधव के महान धनुष को काटने के लिए अर्धचंद्र के आकार के एक तीर का इस्तेमाल किया।

अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या सायकानां समार्पयत् त्वरमाणस्त्वराकाले पुनश्च दशभिः शरैः

He then swiftly struck him with twenty five arrows. At a time when speed was of the essence, he again struck him with ten arrows.

फिर उसने तेजी से पच्चीस बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया। ऐसे समय जब गति ही सर्वोपरि थी, उसने पुनः दस बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया।

अथान्यद्धनुरादाय सात्यकिर्वेगवत्तरम् पञ्चभिः सायकैस्तूर्णं सोमदत्तमविध्यत

Sātyaki took up another bow that was more powerful. He quickly pierced Somadatta with five arrows. O king! In that encounter, Sātyaki seemed to smile.

सात्यकि ने दूसरा धनुष उठाया जो अधिक शक्तिशाली था। उसने शीघ्र ही पाँच बाणों से सोमदत्त को घायल कर दिया। हे राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में, सात्यकि मुस्कुराते हुए लग रहे थे।

ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन ध्वजं चिच्छेद काञ्चनम् बाह्लीकस्य रणे राजन्सात्यकिः प्रहसन्निव

He used another broadheaded arrow to cut down the golden standard of Bahlika's son.

उसने बहलिका के पुत्र के स्वर्ण मानक को काटने के लिए एक और चौड़े सिर वाले तीर का इस्तेमाल किया।

सोमदत्तस्त्वसंभ्रान्तो दृष्ट्वा केतुं निपातितम् शैनेयं पञ्चविंशत्या सायकानां समाचिनोत्

On seeing that his standard had been brought down, Somadatta wasn't scared. He struck Śini's descendant with twenty-five arrows.

यह देखकर कि उसका स्तर गिरा दिया गया है, सोमदत्त भयभीत नहीं हुआ। उसने शिनि के वंशज पर पच्चीस बाणों से प्रहार किया।

सात्वतोऽपि रणे क्रुद्धः सोमदत्तस्य धन्विनः धनुश्चिच्छेद समरे क्षुरप्रेण शितेन ह

Sātvata became enraged in that battle. In that encounter, he used a sharp kṣurapra arrow to slice down the archer Somadatta's bow.

उस युद्ध में सात्वत क्रोधित हो गये। उस मुठभेड़ में, उन्होंने धनुर्धर सोमदत्त के धनुष को काटने के लिए एक तेज क्षुरप्र बाण का उपयोग किया।

अथैनं रुक्मपुङ्खानां शतेन नतपर्वणाम् आचिनोद्बहुधा राजन्भग्नदंष्ट्रमिव द्विपम्

O king! He was like an elephant with its tusks shattered and he struck him in many ways with a hundred gold-tufted arrows that flew straight.

हे राजा! वह एक हाथी के समान था जिसके दाँत टूटे हुए थे और उसने सैकड़ों स्वर्ण-जटित बाणों से, जो सीधे उड़ रहे थे, अनेक प्रकार से उस पर प्रहार किया।

अथान्यद्धनुरादाय सोमदत्तो महारथः सात्यकिं छादयामास शरवृष्ट्या महाबलः

Mahāratha Somadatta took up another bow. The immensely strong one enveloped Sātyaki with a shower of arrows.

महारथ सोमदत्त ने दूसरा धनुष उठाया। उस अत्यंत बलशाली ने बाणों की वर्षा से सात्यकि को आच्छादित कर दिया।

सोमदत्तं तु संक्रुद्धो रणे विव्याध सात्यकिः सात्यकिं चेषुजालेन सोमदत्तो अपीडयत्

Extremely wrathful, Sātyaki pierced Somadatta in that battle. Somadatta also afflicted Sātyaki with his net of arrows.

अत्यंत क्रोधित सात्यकि ने उस युद्ध में सोमदत्त को घायल कर दिया। सोमदत्त ने सात्यकि को भी अपने बाणों के जाल से घायल कर दिया।

दशभिः सात्वतस्यार्थे भीमोऽहन्बाह्लिकात्मजम् सोमदत्तोऽप्यसंभ्रान्तः शैनेयमवधीच्छरैः

For Sātvata's sake, Bhīmā struck Bahlika's son with ten arrows. However, without any fear, Somadatta struck Śini's descendant with arrows.

सात्वत के लिए भीम ने बाह्लीक के पुत्र को दस बाणों से घायल कर दिया। हालाँकि, बिना किसी डर के, सोमदत्त ने सिनी के वंशज पर तीरों से वार किया।

ततस्तु सात्वतस्यार्थे भैमसेनिर्नवं दृढम् मुमोच परिघं घोरं सोमदत्तस्य वक्षसि

For Sātvata's sake, Bhīmasena took up a new, firm and terrible club and hurled it towards Somadatta's chest.

सात्वत की खातिर भीमसेन ने एक नई, दृढ़ और भयानक गदा उठाई और उसे सोमदत्त की छाती की ओर फेंक दिया।

तमापतन्तं वेगेन परिघं घोरदर्शनम् द्विधा चिच्छेद समरे प्रहसन्निव कौरवः

On seeing that the club, terrible in form, was descending towards him in the battle, Kaurava laughed and sliced it down into two fragments.

यह देखकर कि युद्ध में भयंकर रूप वाली गदा उनकी ओर आ रही है, कौरव ने हँसते हुए उसके दो टुकड़े कर दिये।

स पपात द्विधा छिन्न आयसः परिघो महान् महीधरस्येव महच्छिखरं वज्रदारितम्

That large and iron club was seen to be shattered into two fragments and fell down, like the giant summit of a mountain that has been shattered by thunder.

वह बड़ी और लोहे की गदा दो टुकड़ों में टूटकर नीचे गिरती हुई दिखाई दे रही थी, मानो वज्रपात से पर्वत का विशाल शिखर टूट गया हो।

ततस्तु सात्यकी राजन्सोमदत्तस्य संयुगे धनुश्चिच्छेद भल्लेन हस्तावापं च पञ्चभिः

O king! In that encounter, Sātyaki used a broad-headed arrow to slice down Somadatta's bow and used five more to cut down his arm-guards.

हे राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में, सात्यकि ने सोमदत्त के धनुष को काटने के लिए एक चौड़े सिर वाले तीर का इस्तेमाल किया और उसके आर्म-गार्ड को काटने के लिए पांच और तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

चतुर्भिस्तु शरैस्तूर्णं चतुरस्तुरगोत्तमान् समीपं प्रेषयामास प्रेतराजस्य भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He quickly struck his four supreme horses with four arrows and sent them to the king of the dead.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उसने तुरंत अपने चार सर्वोच्च घोड़ों को चार बाणों से मारा और उन्हें मृतकों के राजा के पास भेज दिया।

सारथेश्च शिरः कायाद्भल्लेन नतपर्वणा जहार रथशार्दूलः प्रहसञ्शिनिपुंगवः

With a broad-headed arrow with drooping tufts, he severed the charioteer's head from his body. The tiger among rāṭha-s, the bull among the Śini lineage, laughed.

उन्होंने झुकते हुए शिखाओं वाले चौड़े सिर वाले बाण से सारथी का सिर धड़ से अलग कर दिया। रथ-वंश में बाघ, शिनि वंश में बैल हँसे।

ततः शरं महाघोरं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम् मुमोच सात्वतो राजन्स्वर्णपुङ्खं शिलाशितम्

O king! Sātvata then released an extremely terrible arrow that flamed like the fire. It was gold-tufted and had been sharpened on stone.

हे राजा! तब सात्वत ने अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित अत्यंत भयानक बाण छोड़ा। वह सोने से जड़ा हुआ था और पत्थर पर घिसा हुआ था।

स विमुक्तो बलवता शैनेयेन शरोत्तमः घोरस्तस्योरसि विभो निपपाताशु भारत

With great force, Śini's descendant shot that supreme of arrows. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! That terrible arrow quickly struck the lord and brought him down.

बड़ी ताकत से शिनि के वंशज ने उस श्रेष्ठ बाण का संधान किया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वह भयानक बाण तेजी से भगवान पर लगा और उन्हें नीचे गिरा दिया।

सोऽतिविद्धो बलवता सात्वतेन महारथः सोमदत्तो महाबाहुर्निपपात ममार च

Severely wounded by the powerful mahāratha Sātvata, the mightyarmed Somadatta fell down and died.

शक्तिशाली महारथी सात्वत से गंभीर रूप से घायल होकर, शक्तिशाली हथियारबंद सोमदत्त गिर गया और मर गया।

तं दृष्ट्वा निहतं तत्र सोमदत्तं महारथाः महता शरवर्षेण युयुधानमुपाद्रवन्

On seeing that Somadatta had been killed, the mahāratha-s attacked Yuyudhāna and brought down a great shower of arrows on him.

यह देखकर कि सोमदत्त मारा गया, महारथियों ने युयुधान पर आक्रमण किया और उस पर बाणों की भारी वर्षा की।

छाद्यमानं शरैर्दृष्ट्वा युयुधानं युधिष्ठिरः महत्या सेनया सार्धं द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवत्

They attacked him with a large army and with Droṇa's battle formation. The immensely strong ones on your side were angry.

उन्होंने एक बड़ी सेना और द्रोण की युद्ध संरचना के साथ उस पर हमला किया। आपके पक्ष के अत्यंत शक्तिशाली लोग क्रोधित थे।

ततो युधिष्ठिरः क्रुद्धस्तावकानां महाबलम् शरैर्विद्रावयामास भारद्वाजस्य पश्यतः

While Bhāradvāja's son looked on, Yudhiṣṭhira drove the soldiers away with arrows.

जब तक भारद्वाज पुत्र देखते रहे, युधिष्ठिर ने तीरों से सैनिकों को खदेड़ दिया।

सैन्यानि द्रावयन्तं तु द्रोणो दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरम् अभिदुद्राव वेगेन क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः

On seeing that the soldiers were being driven away by Yudhiṣṭhira, Droṇa attacked with great force. His eyes were red with rage.

यह देखकर कि युधिष्ठिर द्वारा सैनिकों को खदेड़ा जा रहा है, द्रोण ने बड़े बल से आक्रमण किया। उसकी आँखें क्रोध से लाल हो गयीं थीं।

ततः सुनिशितैर्बाणैः पार्थं विव्याध सप्तभिः सोऽतिविद्धो महाबाहुः सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन् युधिष्ठिरस्य चिच्छेद ध्वजं कार्मुकमेव च

He pierced Pārtha with seven extremely sharp arrows. Having pierced him, the mightyarmed one licked the corners of his mouth and severed Yudhiṣṭhira's standard and bow.

उन्होंने सात अत्यंत तीखे बाणों से पार्थ को घायल कर दिया। महाबाहु ने उसे बींधकर उसके मुख के कोनों को चाटा और युधिष्ठिर का ध्वज तथा धनुष काट डाला।

स छिन्नधन्वा त्वरितस्त्वराकाले नृपोत्तमः अन्यदादत्त वेगेन कार्मुकं समरे दृढम्

In that encounter, with his bow severed, and at a time when speed was of the essence, the supreme among kings swiftly took up another firm bow.

उस मुठभेड़ में, जब उसका धनुष टूट गया, और ऐसे समय में जब गति ही सर्वोपरि थी, राजाओं में सर्वोच्च ने तेजी से दूसरा दृढ़ धनुष उठाया।

ततः शरसहस्रेण द्रोणं विव्याध पार्थिवः साश्वसूतध्वजरथं तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्

The king pierced Droṇa with a thousand arrows and his horses, charioteer, standard and chariot too. It was wonderful.

राजा ने एक हजार बाणों से द्रोणाचार्य को तथा उनके घोड़ों, सारथि, ध्वजाओं तथा रथों को भी घायल कर दिया। यह अद्भुत था.

ततो मुहूर्तं व्यथितः शरघातप्रपीडितः निषसाद रथोपस्थे द्रोणो भरतसत्तम

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! For a short while, Droṇa was distressed and oppressed by that storm of arrows. He sank down on the floor of his chariot.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! थोड़ी देर के लिए द्रोण बाणों की उस आंधी से व्यथित और पीड़ित हो गये। वह अपने रथ के फर्श पर गिर गया।

प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां मुहूर्ताद्द्विजसत्तमः क्रोधेन महताविष्टो वायव्यास्त्रमवासृजत्

However, in a short while, the supreme of brāhmana-s regained his senses. He was overcome by great rage and invoked the vāyavya weapon.

हालाँकि, थोड़ी देर में, ब्राह्मण-प्रधान को होश आ गया। वह अत्यधिक क्रोध से अभिभूत हो गया और उसने वायव्य अस्त्र का प्रयोग किया।

असंभ्रान्तस्ततः पार्थो धनुराकृष्य वीर्यवान् तदस्त्रमस्त्रेण रणे स्तम्भयामास भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! However, the valiant Pārtha was not frightened in the battle and stretched his bow, repulsing that weapon with a weapon of his own.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हालाँकि, बहादुर पार्थ युद्ध में भयभीत नहीं हुए और उन्होंने अपना धनुष बढ़ाया और अपने हथियार से उस हथियार को खदेड़ दिया।

ततोऽब्रवीद्वासुदेवः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु

Vāsudeva spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira, Kuntī's son. "O Yudhiṣṭhira! O mighty-armed one! Listen to what I tell you.

वासुदेव ने कुंती पुत्र युधिष्ठिर से बात की। "हे युधिष्ठिर! हे महाबाहो! मैं तुमसे जो कहता हूं उसे सुनो।"

उपारमस्व युद्धाय द्रोणाद्भरतसत्तम गृध्यते हि सदा द्रोणो ग्रहणे तव संयुगे

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! Give up this battle with Droṇa. Droṇa has always desired to seize you in the battle.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! द्रोण के साथ यह युद्ध छोड़ दो। द्रोण सदैव तुम्हें युद्ध में बंदी बनाना चाहते थे।

नानुरूपमहं मन्ये युद्धमस्य त्वया सह योऽस्य सृष्टो विनाशाय स एनं श्वो हनिष्यति

I do not think that you should fight with him in this way. The one who has been created to kill him will kill him tomorrow.

मुझे नहीं लगता कि तुम्हें उससे इस तरह लड़ना चाहिए. जो उसे मारने के लिए रचा गया है वही कल उसे मार डालेगा।

परिवर्ज्य गुरुं याहि यत्र राजा सुयोधनः भीमश्च रथशार्दूलो युध्यते कौरवैः सह

Abandon the preceptor and go to the spot where King Suyodhana is. Bhīmā, tiger among rāṭha-s, is fighting with the Kaurava-s there."

गुरु को त्याग दो और उस स्थान पर जाओ जहां राजा सुयोधन हैं। भीम, रथियों के बीच का बाघ, वहां कौरवों से लड़ रहा है।"

वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः मुहूर्तं चिन्तयित्वा तु ततो दारुणमाहवम्

Having heard Vāsudeva's words, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira thought for an instant.

वासुदेव के वचन सुनकर धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने एक पल के लिए सोचा।

प्रायाद्द्रुतममित्रघ्नो यत्र भीमो व्यवस्थितः विनिघ्नंस्तावकान्योधान्व्यादितास्य इवान्तकः

He then went to the spot where Bhīmā, the destroyer of enemies, was stationed and was fighting a fierce battle. He was slaying your warriors, like Death with a gaping mouth.

फिर वह उस स्थान पर गया जहाँ शत्रुओं का संहारक भीम तैनात था और भयंकर युद्ध कर रहा था। वह तुम्हारे योद्धाओं को ऐसे मार रहा था, जैसे मौत मुँह फाड़े हुए हो।

रथघोषेण महता नादयन्वसुधातलम् पर्जन्य इव घर्मान्ते नादयन्वै दिशो दश

Pāṇḍava made the earth resound with the great clatter of his chariot. It was as if a cloud was roaring in the ten directions, at the end of the summer.

पांडवों ने अपने रथ की घरघराहट से पृथ्वी को गुंजायमान कर दिया। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों ग्रीष्म ऋतु के अंत में बादल दसों दिशाओं में गरज रहा हो।
