धृतराष्ट्र उवाच अहन्यहनि मे दीप्तं यशः पतति संजय हता मे बहवो योधा मन्ये कालस्य पर्ययम्

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya! From one day to another, my blazing fame is being destroyed. Many of my warriors have been killed and I think that this is because of destiny.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: हे संजय! एक दिन से दूसरे दिन मेरी चमकती हुई कीर्ति नष्ट होती जा रही है। मेरे बहुत से योद्धा मारे गये हैं और मुझे लगता है कि यह नियति के कारण है।

धनंजयस्तु संक्रुद्धः प्रविष्टो मामकं बलम् रक्षितं द्रोणकर्णाभ्यामप्रवेश्यं सुरैरपि

The enraged Dhanañjayā has penetrated into my army. It is protected by Droṇa and Karṇa and is incapable of being penetrated by the gods.

क्रोधित धनंजय मेरी सेना में घुस गया है। यह द्रोण और कर्ण द्वारा संरक्षित है और देवताओं द्वारा भेदने में असमर्थ है।

ताभ्यामूर्जितवीर्याभ्यामाप्यायितपराक्रमः सहितः कृष्णभीमाभ्यां शिनीनामृषभेण च

Kṛṣṇā and Bhīmā, the two with blazing energy, are with him and have increased his valour. There is also the bull among the Śini lineage.

कृष्ण और भीम, दोनों तेजस्वी ऊर्जा वाले, उसके साथ हैं और उन्होंने उसकी वीरता बढ़ा दी है। सिनी वंश में बैल भी है।

तदा प्रभृति मा शोको दहत्यग्निरिवाशयम् ग्रस्तान्हि प्रतिपश्यामि भूमिपालान्ससैन्धवान्

Ever since I have heard about his entry, my sorrow is consuming me, like a fire on dry gras-s. I can see all the lords of the earth, with Saindhava, being devoured.

जब से मैंने उसके प्रवेश के बारे में सुना है, मेरा दुःख मुझे सूखी घास में लगी आग की तरह निगल रहा है। मैं सैन्धवों सहित पृथ्वी के समस्त देवताओं को भस्म होते हुए देख सकता हूँ।

अप्रियं सुमहत्कृत्वा सिन्धुराजः किरीटिनः चक्षुर्विषयमापन्नः कथं मुच्येत जीवितः

The king of Sindhu has done an extremely great injury to Kirīṭī and if he comes within his sight, how can he escape with his life?

सिन्धु के राजा ने किरीटी पर अत्यंत भारी आघात किया है और यदि वह उसकी दृष्टि में आ जाय तो अपने प्राणों से कैसे बच सकता है?

अनुमानाच्च पश्यामि नास्ति संजय सैन्धवः युद्धं तु तद्यथा वृत्तं तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः

O Sañjaya! From the signs, I do not see Saindhava remaining alive. But I am asking you to tell me about how the battle raged.

हे संजय! चिन्हों से मुझे सैन्धव जीवित बचे नहीं दिख रहे हैं। लेकिन मैं आपसे यह बताने के लिए कह रहा हूं कि लड़ाई कैसे भड़की।

यच्च विक्षोभ्य महतीं सेनां संलोड्य चासकृत् एकः प्रविष्टः संक्रुद्धो नलिनीमिव कुञ्जरः

How did the angry one penetrate my large army single-handed and agitate and trouble it, like an elephant amidst lotuses?

क्रोधित व्यक्ति अकेले ही मेरी विशाल सेना में कैसे घुस गया और उसे कमल के बीच में हाथी की तरह उत्तेजित और परेशान करने लगा?

तस्य वृष्णिप्रवीरस्य ब्रूहि युद्धं यथातथम् धनंजयार्थे यत्तस्य कुशलो ह्यसि संजय

Tell me exactly about the battle that the brave one from the Vṛṣṇi lineage fought, for Dhanañjayā's sake. O Sañjaya! You are skilled in narration.

मुझे उस युद्ध के बारे में ठीक-ठीक बताओ जो वृष्णि वंश के वीर ने धनंजय के लिए लड़ा था। हे संजय! आप वर्णन में कुशल हैं.

संजय उवाच तथा तु वैकर्तनपीडितं तं; भीमं प्रयान्तं पुरुषप्रवीरम् समीक्ष्य राजन्नरवीरमध्ये; शिनिप्रवीरोऽनुययौ रथेन

Sañjaya replied: O king! On seeing that Bhīmā, foremost among men, was oppressed by Vaikartaṇa in the midst of those brave men, the foremost of the Śini lineage followed him on his chariot.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: हे राजा! यह देखकर कि पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ भीम को उन वीर पुरुषों के बीच में वैकार्टन द्वारा प्रताड़ित किया गया था, शिनि वंश के सबसे प्रमुख ने अपने रथ पर उसका पीछा किया।

नदन्यथा वज्रधरस्तपान्ते; ज्वलन्यथा जलदान्ते च सूर्यः निघ्नन्नमित्रान्धनुषा दृढेन; संकम्पयंस्तव पुत्रस्य सेनाम्

He roared, like the wielder of the vajra at the end of summer. He blazed, like the sun at the end of the monsoon. With his firm bow, he killed the enemies and made the army of your son tremble.

वह गर्मियों के अंत में वज्र धारण करने वाले की तरह दहाड़ता था। वह मानसून के अंत में सूरज की तरह चमक रहा था। उन्होंने अपने दृढ़ धनुष से शत्रुओं का संहार कर दिया तथा आपके पुत्र की सेना को कम्पित कर दिया।

तं यान्तमश्वै रजतप्रकाशै;रायोधने नरवीरं चरन्तम् नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं त्वदीयाः; सर्वे रथा भारत माधवाग्र्यम्

The brave one among men fought and roamed around, drawn on mounts that were silvery in complexion. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! No one among the rāṭha-s on your side was capable of countering the fierce Mādhava.

पुरुषों में से वह बहादुर व्यक्ति चाँदी जैसे रंग के पर्वतों पर बैठकर युद्ध करता था और इधर-उधर घूमता था। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके पक्ष के रथियों में से कोई भी भयंकर माधव का मुकाबला करने में सक्षम नहीं था।

अमर्षपूर्णस्त्वनिवृत्तयोधी; शरासनी काञ्चनवर्मधारी अलम्बुसः सात्यकिं माधवाग्र्य;मवारयद्राजवरोऽभिपत्य

Alambuṣā, foremost among kings, became intolerant. He was clad in golden armour, wielded a bow and arrow and never retreated from the field of battle. He attacked Sātyaki, foremost among the Mādhava lineage.

राजाओं में अग्रणी अलम्बुषा असहिष्णु हो गया। वह सुनहरे कवच पहने हुए थे, धनुष और बाण चलाते थे और युद्ध के मैदान से कभी पीछे नहीं हटते थे। उसने माधव वंश में अग्रणी सात्यकि पर आक्रमण किया।

तयोरभूद्भारत संप्रहार;स्तथागतो नैव बभूव कश्चित् प्रैक्षन्त एवाहवशोभिनौ तौ; योधास्त्वदीयाश्च परे च सर्वे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The likes of the encounter between them has never been seen before. All the warriors, on your side and that of the enemy, became spectators in that clash between those two ornaments of battle.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इनके बीच जैसी भिड़ंत पहले कभी नहीं देखी गई. उन दोनों युद्ध आभूषणों के उस संघर्ष में आपके और शत्रु पक्ष के सभी योद्धा दर्शक बन गये।

अविध्यदेनं दशभिः पृषत्कै;रलम्बुसो राजवरः प्रसह्य अनागतानेव तु तान्पृषत्कां;श्चिच्छेद बाणैः शिनिपुंगवोऽपि

Alambuṣā, supreme among kings, shot ten arrows at him. However, the bull among the Śini lineage, struck those arrows down with his own arrows, before they could reach him.

राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ अलम्बुषा ने उस पर दस बाण छोड़े। हालाँकि, शिनि वंश के बैल ने उन तीरों को अपने तीरों से नीचे गिरा दिया, इससे पहले कि वे उस तक पहुँच पाते।

पुनः स बाणैस्त्रिभिरग्निकल्पै;राकर्णपूर्णैर्निशितैः सुपुङ्खैः विव्याध देहावरणं विदार्य; ते सात्यकेराविविशुः शरीरम्

He drew his bow back up to his ears and again struck him with three well-tufted and sharp arrows that were like the fire. These shattered Sātyaki's armour and penetrated his body.

उसने अपना धनुष वापस उसके कानों तक खींच लिया और पुनः अग्नि के समान तीन नुकीले और तीखे बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया। इनसे सात्यकि का कवच टूट गया और उसके शरीर में घुस गया।

तैः कायमस्याग्न्यनिलप्रभावै;र्विदार्य बाणैरपरैर्ज्वलद्भिः आजघ्निवांस्तान्रजतप्रकाशा;नश्वांश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरः प्रसह्य

Having pierced his body with those arrows that had the force of the fire and the wind, he again struck his four horses, with the complexion of silver, with four other arrows.

अग्नि और वायु के बल वाले बाणों से उसके शरीर को बींधने के बाद, उसने फिर से चांदी के रंग वाले चार अन्य बाणों से उसके चारों घोड़ों को घायल कर दिया।

तथा तु तेनाभिहतस्तरस्वी; नप्ता शिनेश्चक्रधरप्रभावः अलम्बुसस्योत्तमवेगवद्भि;र्हयांश्चतुर्भिर्निजघान बाणैः

Śini's grandson was as spirited and powerful as the wielder of the cakra himself. Though he was struck, he used four forceful arrows to kill Alambuṣā's four horses.

शिनि का पोता चक्रधारी के समान ही उत्साही और शक्तिशाली था। हालाँकि वह मारा गया था, फिर भी उसने अलम्बुषा के चार घोड़ों को मारने के लिए चार शक्तिशाली बाणों का इस्तेमाल किया।

अथास्य सूतस्य शिरो निकृत्य; भल्लेन कालानलसंनिभेन सकुण्डलं पूर्णशशिप्रकाशं; भ्राजिष्णु वक्त्रं निचकर्त देहात्

With a broad-headed arrow, he severed his charioteer's head and used other arrows that were like the fire of destruction to sever his too. It was beautiful, with a face like the full moon, and was adorned with earrings. It was severed from the body.

एक चौड़े सिर वाले बाण से उसने अपने सारथी का सिर काट डाला और अन्य बाणों का प्रयोग किया जो विनाश की अग्नि के समान थे, जिससे उसका भी सिर धड़ से अलग हो गया। वह सुन्दर, पूर्ण चन्द्रमा के समान मुख वाला तथा कुण्डलों से सुशोभित था। उसे शरीर से अलग कर दिया गया था.

निहत्य तं पार्थिवपुत्रपौत्रं; संख्ये मधूनामृषभः प्रमाथी ततोऽन्वयादर्जुनमेव वीरः; सैन्यानि राजंस्तव संनिवार्य

O king! Having killed that son and grandson of a king in that battle, the brave bull among the Madhu lineage tormented and countered your soldiers and went towards Arjuna.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में राजा के पुत्र और पौत्र को मार डालने के बाद मधु वंश का वीर बैल आपके सैनिकों को पीड़ा पहुँचाता और उनका मुकाबला करता हुआ अर्जुन की ओर बढ़ा।

अन्वागतं वृष्णिवरं समीक्ष्य; तथारिमध्ये परिवर्तमानम् घ्नन्तं कुरूणामिषुभिर्बलानि; पुनः पुनर्वायुरिवाभ्रपूगान्

The supreme among the Vṛṣṇi lineage was seen to circle around in the midst of the enemy. As he proceeded, he repeatedly slaughtered the Kuru forces with his arrows, like the wind dispelling a mās-s of clouds.

वृष्णि वंश के सर्वोच्च को शत्रु के बीच में चक्कर लगाते देखा गया। जैसे ही वह आगे बढ़ा, उसने बार-बार अपने बाणों से कुरु सेनाओं का संहार किया, जैसे वायु बादलों के समूह को तितर-बितर कर देती है।

ततोऽवहन्सैन्धवाः साधु दान्ता; गोक्षीरकुन्देन्दुहिमप्रकाशाः सुवर्णजालावतताः सदश्वा; यतो यतः कामयते नृसिंहः

He was borne on well-trained and controlled horses from the Sindhu region. They were as white as cow's milk, the kuṇḍa flower, the moon or snow. They were well-trained horses and had harnesses that were golden in complexion. They bore the lion among men wherever he desired.

उनका जन्म सिंधु क्षेत्र के अच्छी तरह से प्रशिक्षित और नियंत्रित घोड़ों पर हुआ था। वे गाय के दूध, कुंड के फूल, चंद्रमा या बर्फ के समान सफेद थे। वे अच्छी तरह से प्रशिक्षित घोड़े थे और उनके पास सुनहरे रंग के हार्नेस थे। उन्होंने सिंह को मनुष्यों के बीच में, जहां वह चाहा, वहां ले गए।

अथात्मजास्ते सहिताभिपेतु;रन्ये च योधास्त्वरितास्त्वदीयाः कृत्वा मुखं भारत योधमुख्यं; दुःशासनं त्वत्सुतमाजमीढ

O Ājamīḍha! Your sons united with the other warriors on your side and swiftly attacked him. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They made your son, Duḥśāsana, chief among warriors, their leader.

हे अजमीढ! आपके पुत्र आपके पक्ष के अन्य योद्धाओं के साथ एकजुट हो गये और तेजी से उस पर हमला कर दिया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने आपके पुत्र दुःशासन को, जो योद्धाओं में प्रमुख था, अपना नेता बनाया।

ते सर्वतः संपरिवार्य संख्ये; शैनेयमाजघ्नुरनीकसाहाः स चापि तान्प्रवरः सात्वतानां; न्यवारयद्बाणजालेन वीरः

In that battle, those leaders of battle formations surrounded Śini's descendant from all sides and struck him. The brave one, supreme among the Sātvata lineage, countered them with his net of arrows.

उस लड़ाई में, युद्ध संरचनाओं के उन नेताओं ने सिनी के वंशज को चारों ओर से घेर लिया और उस पर हमला किया। सात्वत वंश में सर्वोच्च वीर ने अपने बाणों के जाल से उनका मुकाबला किया।

निवार्य तांस्तूर्णममित्रघाती; नप्ता शिनेः पत्रिभिरग्निकल्पैः दुःशासनस्यापि जघान वाहा;नुद्यम्य बाणासनमाजमीढ

Śini's grandson, the slayer of enemies, used arrows that were like the fire and quickly countered them. O Ājamīḍha! He raised his bow and slew Duḥśāsana's mounts.

शत्रुओं का संहार करने वाले शिनि के पौत्र ने अग्नि के समान तीव्र बाणों का प्रयोग किया और शीघ्रता से उनका प्रतिकार किया। हे अजमीढ! उसने अपना धनुष उठाया और दुःशासन के घुड़सवारों को मार डाला।
