संजय उवाच ते सेनेऽन्योन्यमासाद्य प्रहृष्टाश्वनरद्विपे बृहत्यौ संप्रजह्राते देवासुरचमूपमे

Sañjaya said: Those two armies clashed against each other, with cheerful horses, men and elephants. That great encounter was like that between the armies of gods and āsura-s.

संजय ने कहा: वे दोनों सेनाएँ प्रसन्न घोड़ों, मनुष्यों और हाथियों के साथ एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गईं। वह महान मुठभेड़ देवताओं और असुरों की सेनाओं के बीच की तरह थी।

ततो गजा रथाश्चाश्वाः पत्तयश्च महाहवे संप्रहारं परं चक्रुर्देहपाप्मप्रणाशनम्

In that great battle, elephants, chariots, horses and infantry struck at each other, mangling bodies and destroying lives.

उस महान युद्ध में, हाथियों, रथों, घोड़ों और पैदल सेना ने एक-दूसरे पर हमला किया, शरीर को क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया और जीवन को नष्ट कर दिया।

पूर्णचन्द्रार्कपद्मानां कान्तित्विड्गन्धतः समैः उत्तमाङ्गैर्नृसिंहानां नृसिंहास्तस्तरुर्महीम्

The heads of men who were like lions were strewn around on the ground and the faces of those lions among men who were killed were like full moon, the sun, or lotuses in splendour.

जो मनुष्य सिंहों के समान थे उनके सिर भूमि पर इधर-उधर बिखर गये थे और जो मनुष्य मारे गये थे उनमें से उन सिंहों के मुख पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा, सूर्य अथवा कमल के समान शोभायमान थे।

अर्धचन्द्रैस्तथा भल्लैः क्षुरप्रैरसिपट्टिशैः परश्वधैश्चाप्यकृन्तन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि युध्यताम्

The heads of the warriors were severed with broad-headed and razor-sharp arrows in the shape of the half-moon, swords, lances and battleaxes.

योद्धाओं के सिर आधे चंद्रमा के आकार के चौड़े सिरों वाले और उस्तरा-तेज तीरों, तलवारों, भालों और फरसाओं से काट दिए गए थे।

व्यायतायतबाहूनां व्यायतायतबाहुभिः व्यायता बाहवः पेतुश्छिन्नमुष्ट्यायुधाङ्गदाः

They possessed thick and long arms and these were severed by others with thick and long arms. Those thick arms were severed and fell down, with weapons and armlets still on the hands.

उनके पास मोटी और लंबी भुजाएं थीं और इन्हें मोटी और लंबी भुजाओं वाले अन्य लोगों ने काट दिया था। वे मोटी-मोटी भुजाएँ कटकर गिर पड़ीं, हाथों में अभी भी अस्त्र-शस्त्र और भुजदण्ड शेष थे।

तैः स्फुरद्भिर्मही भाति रक्ताङ्गुलितलैस्तदा गरुडप्रहतैरुग्रैः पञ्चास्यैरिव पन्नगैः

With those red fingers and palms, the earth looked resplendent. It was as if five-headed serpents had been fiercely killed by Gāruḍa.

उन लाल उंगलियों और हथेलियों से, पृथ्वी देदीप्यमान दिखती थी। यह ऐसा था मानो गरुड़ ने पांच सिर वाले सांपों को बेरहमी से मार डाला हो।

हयस्यन्दननागेभ्यः पेतुर्वीरा द्विषद्धताः विमानेभ्यो यथा क्षीणे पुण्ये स्वर्गसदस्तथा

Horses, chariots, elephants and brave warriors were destroyed by the enemy and fell down. It was as if residents of heaven had been dislodged from their celestial vehicles, after their sacred merits had been exhausted.

घोड़े, रथ, हाथी और वीर योद्धा शत्रु द्वारा नष्ट कर दिये गये। यह ऐसा था मानो स्वर्ग के निवासियों को उनके पवित्र पुण्य समाप्त हो जाने के बाद, उनके दिव्य वाहनों से उतार दिया गया हो।

गदाभिरन्यैर्गुर्वीभिः परिघैर्मुसलैरपि पोथिताः शतशः पेतुर्वीरा वीरतरै रणे

In that battle, hundreds of brave and braver ones were uprooted through thick and heavy clubs, maces and bludgeons.

उस युद्ध में सैकड़ों शूरवीरों को मोटी और भारी लाठियों, गदाओं और डंडों से उखाड़ फेंका गया।

रथा रथैर्विनिहता मत्ता मत्तैर्द्विपैर्द्विपाः सादिनः सादिभिश्चैव तस्मिन्परमसंकुले

Rāṭha-s were killed by rāṭha-s and mad elephants by other mad elephants. As they clashed in that supreme encounter, horses were brought down by horses.

राठों को राठों ने और पागल हाथियों को अन्य पागल हाथियों ने मार डाला। जैसे ही वे उस सर्वोच्च मुठभेड़ में भिड़े, घोड़ों को घोड़ों द्वारा नीचे लाया गया।

रथा वररथैर्नागैरश्वारोहाश्च पत्तिभिः अश्वारोहैः पदाताश्च निहता युधि शेरते

Rāṭha-s were destroyed by supreme rāṭha-s, elephants by horse riders and foot soldiers. Horse riders and foot soldiers were killed and lay down on that field of battle.

रथों को सर्वोच्च रथों ने, हाथियों को घुड़सवारों और पैदल सैनिकों ने नष्ट कर दिया। घुड़सवार और पैदल सैनिक मारे गये और युद्धभूमि में लेट गये।

रथाश्वपत्तयो नागै रथैर्नागाश्च पत्तयः रथपत्तिद्विपाश्चाश्वैर्नृभिश्चाश्वरथद्विपाः

Chariots, horses, foot soldiers and elephants were destroyed by chariots, elephants, horses and foot soldiers. Chariots, foot soldiers, elephants and horses were destroyed by men, horses, chariots and elephants.

रथों, घोड़ों, पैदल सैनिकों और हाथियों को रथों, हाथियों, घोड़ों और पैदल सैनिकों द्वारा नष्ट कर दिया गया। मनुष्यों, घोड़ों, रथों और हाथियों द्वारा रथों, पैदल सैनिकों, हाथियों और घोड़ों को नष्ट कर दिया गया।

रथाश्वेभनराणां च नराश्वेभरथैः कृतम् पाणिपादैश्च शस्त्रैश्च रथैश्च कदनं महत्

Chariots, horses and men fought against men, horses and chariots and caused a great carnage, fighting with hands, feet, weapons and chariots.

रथों, घोड़ों और मनुष्यों ने मनुष्यों, घोड़ों और रथों के विरुद्ध लड़ाई की और हाथों, पैरों, हथियारों और रथों से लड़ते हुए एक महान नरसंहार किया।

तथा तस्मिन्बले शूरैर्वध्यमाने हतेऽपि च अस्मानभ्यागमन्पार्था वृकोदरपुरोगमाः

While those brave soldiers were being slaughtered and killed, the Pārtha-s, with Vṛkodara at the forefront, advanced against us.

जब उन बहादुर सैनिकों को मार डाला जा रहा था, पार्थ-एस, सबसे आगे वृकोदर के साथ, हमारे खिलाफ आगे बढ़े।

धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च द्रौपदेयाः प्रभद्रकाः सात्यकिश्चेकितानश्च द्रविडैः सैनिकैः सह

They were with Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, Draupadī's sons, the Prabhadraka-s, Sātyaki, Cekitāna and the Drāviḍa soldiers.

वे धृष्टद्युम्न, शिखंडी, द्रौपदी के पुत्र, प्रभद्रक, सात्यकि, चेकितान और द्रविड़ सैनिकों के साथ थे।

भृता वित्तेन महता पाण्ड्याश्चौड्राः सकेरलाः व्यूढोरस्का दीर्घभुजाः प्रांशवः प्रियदर्शनाः

They were surrounded by a large army from the Pāṇḍya-s, the Cola-s and the Kerala-s. They were broad in the chest and long in the arms.

वे पाण्ड्य, कोला और केरल की एक बड़ी सेना से घिरे हुए थे। उनकी छाती चौड़ी और भुजाएँ लम्बी थीं।

आपीडिनो रक्तदन्ता मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमाः नानाविरागवसना गन्धचूर्णावचूर्णिताः

They were tall and handsome. They were ornamented and possessed red teeth. They were like crazy elephants in their valour. They were adorned in garments of many colours and were smeared with fragrant scents.

वे लम्बे और सुन्दर थे। वे अलंकृत थे और उनके लाल दाँत थे। वे वीरता में उन्मत्त हाथियों के समान थे। वे अनेक रंगों के वस्त्रों से सुशोभित थे और सुगन्धित सुगंधों से युक्त थे।

बद्धासयः पाशहस्ता वारणप्रतिवारणाः समानमृत्यवो राजन्ननीकस्थाः परस्परम्

They had girded swords and nooses in their hands. They were capable of countering elephants. O king! Prepared to die, they were stationed against each other in that army.

उनके हाथों में कमरबंद तलवारें और फंदे थे। वे हाथियों का मुकाबला करने में सक्षम थे। हे राजा! मरने के लिए तैयार होकर, वे उस सेना में एक-दूसरे के सामने तैनात थे।

कलापिनश्चापहस्ता दीर्घकेशाः प्रियाहवाः पत्तयः सात्यकेरन्ध्रा घोररूपपराक्रमाः

There were quivers and bows in their hands and their hair was long. They were pleasant in speech. The foot soldiers from Āndhra were terrible in form and valiant and were led by Sātyaki.

उनके हाथों में तरकश और धनुष थे और उनके बाल लम्बे थे। वे बोलने में मधुर थे। आंध्र के पैदल सैनिक भयानक रूप वाले और बहादुर थे और उनका नेतृत्व सात्यकि ने किया था।

अथापरे पुनः शूराश्चेदिपाञ्चालकेकयाः करूषाः कोसलाः काश्या मागधाश्चापि दुद्रुवुः

There were other brave ones from Cedi, Pāñcāla, Kekaya, Kārūṣa, Kosalā, Kāśi and Māgadha and they dashed forward.

चेदि, पंचाल, केकय, करुष, कोसल, काशी और मगध से अन्य बहादुर लोग थे और वे आगे बढ़े।

तेषां रथाश्च नागाश्च प्रवराश्चापि पत्तयः नानाविधरवैर्हृष्टा नृत्यन्ति च हसन्ति च

There were many kinds of chariots, elephants, supreme horses and infantry amidst them and they could be seen to be dancing and laughing.

उनके बीच अनेक प्रकार के रथ, हाथी, श्रेष्ठ घोड़े और पैदल सेनाएँ थीं और वे नाचते और हँसते हुए दिखाई देते थे।

तस्य सैन्यस्य महतो महामात्रवरैर्वृतः मध्यं वृकोदरोऽभ्यागात्त्वदीयं नागधूर्गतः

Surrounded by supreme ones from the enemy, Vṛkodara was in the midst of that large army. He was seated astride an elephant.

शत्रु से श्रेष्ठ लोगों से घिरा हुआ, वृकोदर उस विशाल सेना के बीच में था। वह हाथी पर सवार थे।

स नागप्रवरोऽत्युग्रो विधिवत्कल्पितो बभौ उदयाद्र्यग्र्यभवनं यथाभ्युदितभास्करम्

That supreme among elephants was fierce and having been properly prepared, looked dazzling. It was like a palace atop Mount Udaya, illuminated at the peak by the rising sun.

वह हाथियों में श्रेष्ठ भयंकर था और ठीक से तैयार होने के कारण तेजस्वी दिखता था। यह उदय पर्वत के शीर्ष पर एक महल जैसा था, जिसकी चोटी उगते सूरज से प्रकाशित हो रही थी।

तस्यायसं वर्मवरं वररत्नविभूषितम् तारोद्भासस्य नभसः शारदस्य समत्विषम्

His supreme armour was made out of iron and he was adorned with the best of gems. He sparkled like the autumn sky, studded with stars.

उसका सर्वोच्च कवच लोहे का बना था और वह सर्वोत्तम रत्नों से सुसज्जित था। वह तारों से सुसज्जित शरद ऋतु के आकाश की तरह चमक रहा था।

स तोमरप्रासकरश्चारुमौलिः स्वलंकृतः चरन्मध्यंदिनार्काभस्तेजसा व्यदहद्रिपून्

There was a fierce spear in his hand and it was beautifully adorned at the tip. Like the midday sun in autumn, he began to burn up the enemy.

उसके हाथ में एक भयंकर भाला था और उसकी नोक पर सुन्दर भाला सुशोभित था। शरद् ऋतु में दोपहर के सूर्य के समान वह शत्रु को जलाने लगा।

तं दृष्ट्वा द्विरदं दूरात्क्षेमधूर्तिर्द्विपस्थितः आह्वयानोऽभिदुद्राव प्रमनाः प्रमनस्तरम्

Seeing that elephant from a distance, Kṣemadhūrti arrived, seated on another elephant. He was cheerful and attacked and challenged someone who was more cheerful than he was.

उस हाथी को दूर से देखकर क्षेमधूर्ति दूसरे हाथी पर बैठकर आ गये। वह प्रसन्नचित्त था और उसने ऐसे व्यक्ति पर हमला किया और उसे चुनौती दी जो उससे अधिक प्रसन्नचित्त था।

तयोः समभवद्युद्धं द्विपयोरुग्ररूपयोः यदृच्छया द्रुमवतोर्महापर्वतयोरिव

There was a clash between those two elephants, both of which were fierce in form. They clashed as they wished, like two mountains with trees at the top.

उन दोनों हाथियों के बीच भिड़ंत हो गई, दोनों का रूप भयंकर था। वे अपनी इच्छानुसार आपस में टकराते थे, जैसे दो पहाड़ जिनके शीर्ष पर पेड़ हों।

संसक्तनागौ तौ वीरौ तोमरैरितरेतरम् बलवत्सूर्यरश्म्याभैर्भित्त्वा भित्त्वा विनेदतुः

Astride the clashing elephants, those two brave ones struck each other with their spears. The powerful ones were as dazzling as the rays of the sun and striking each other, roared.

आपस में भिड़ते हाथियों पर सवार होकर उन दोनों वीरों ने एक-दूसरे पर भालों से प्रहार किया। वे शक्तिशाली सूर्य की किरणों के समान तेजस्वी थे और एक-दूसरे पर प्रहार करते हुए गर्जना कर रहे थे।

व्यपसृत्य तु नागाभ्यां मण्डलानि विचेरतुः प्रगृह्य चैव धनुषी जघ्नतुर्वै परस्परम्

They then retreated and circled on their elephants. Both of them picked up bows and struck each other.

फिर वे पीछे हट गए और अपने हाथियों पर सवार होकर चक्कर लगाने लगे। उन दोनों ने धनुष उठाया और एक दूसरे पर प्रहार किया।

क्ष्वेडितास्फोटितरवैर्बाणशब्दैश्च सर्वशः तौ जनान्हर्षयित्वा च सिंहनादान्प्रचक्रतुः

They slapped their arms and in every direction, there was the sound of arrows. As they roared like lions, they delighted all the men.

उन्होंने अपनी भुजाएँ पटकीं और हर दिशा में बाणों की ध्वनि होने लगी। उन्होंने सिंहों की नाईं गरजकर सब मनुष्यों को आनन्दित किया।

समुद्यतकराभ्यां तौ द्विपाभ्यां कृतिनावुभौ वातोद्धूतपताकाभ्यां युयुधाते महाबलौ

Those immensely strong lords were on elephants that raised up their trunks. As they fought, the flags whirled around in the wind.

वे अत्यंत बलशाली राजा हाथियों पर सवार थे जो अपनी सूंड ऊपर उठाए हुए थे। जैसे ही वे लड़े, झंडे हवा में इधर-उधर घूमने लगे।

तावन्योन्यस्य धनुषी छित्त्वान्योन्यं विनेदतुः शक्तितोमरवर्षेण प्रावृण्मेघाविवाम्बुभिः

Having severed each other's bows, they roared. They showered down lances and spears, like clouds pouring down rain during the monsoon.

एक दूसरे के धनुष काटकर वे गर्जना करने लगे। उन्होंने बरछों और भालों की वर्षा की, जैसे मानसून के दौरान बादल बरसते हैं।

क्षेमधूर्तिस्तदा भीमं तोमरेण स्तनान्तरे निर्बिभेद तु वेगेन षड्भिश्चाप्यपरैर्नदन्

Kṣemadhūrti used great force to strike Bhīmā between the breasts with a spear and striking him again with another six, roared.

क्षेमधुर्ति ने बड़ी ताकत लगाकर भीम की छाती के बीच भाले से वार किया और फिर से छक्का मारकर गर्जना की।

स भीमसेनः शुशुभे तोमरैरङ्गमाश्रितैः क्रोधदीप्तवपुर्मेघैः सप्तसप्तिरिवांशुमान्

Because of those spears, Bhīmasena was resplendent in the field of battle. In that encounter, his body blazed with anger, like seven suns seven times.

उन भालों के कारण भीमसेन युद्धभूमि में शोभा पा रहे थे। उस मुठभेड़ में, उनका शरीर क्रोध से सात सूर्यों की तरह सात बार जलने लगा।

ततो भास्करवर्णाभमञ्जोगतिमयस्मयम् ससर्ज तोमरं भीमः प्रत्यमित्राय यत्नवान्

Bhīmā carefully hurled a spear towards his enemy. It was made out of iron and possessed the complexion of the sun. It flew straight.

भीम ने सावधानी से अपने शत्रु की ओर भाला फेंका। यह लोहे से बना था और इसका रंग सूर्य जैसा था। यह सीधा उड़ गया.

ततः कुलूताधिपतिश्चापमायम्य सायकैः दशभिस्तोमरं छित्त्वा शक्त्या विव्याध पाण्डवम्

The lord of Kulūta affixed ten arrows to his bow and shattered the spear. He then pierced Pāṇḍava with sixty more.

कुलुता के स्वामी ने अपने धनुष पर दस बाण चढ़ाये और भाले को चकनाचूर कर दिया। फिर उसने पांडवों को साठ से अधिक घायल कर दिया।

अथ कार्मुकमादाय महाजलदनिस्वनम् रिपोरभ्यर्दयन्नागमुन्मदः पाण्डवः शरैः

Pāṇḍava picked up a bow that roared like a giant cloud and afflicting his enemy's elephants with his arrows, roared.

पाण्डव ने विशाल मेघ के समान गर्जना करने वाला धनुष उठाया और अपने शत्रु के हाथियों को अपने बाणों से पीड़ित करके गर्जना की।

स शरौघार्दितो नागो भीमसेनेन संयुगे निगृह्यमाणो नातिष्ठद्वातध्वस्त इवाम्बुदः

Having been afflicted by the arrows of Bhīmasena in the battle, the elephant did not remain there any longer, though one tried to restrain it. It was like a cloud dispelled by the wind.

युद्ध में भीमसेन के बाणों से पीड़ित होने के बाद, हाथी अब वहाँ नहीं रुका, हालाँकि किसी ने उसे रोकने की कोशिश की। यह हवा से उड़े हुए बादल के समान था।

तामभ्यधावद्द्विरदं भीमसेनस्य नागराट् महावातेरितं मेघं वातोद्धूत इवाम्बुदः

Bhīmasena's elephant, the king of elephants, pursued it, like a cloud driven by a strong wind follows a cloud blown away by the wind.

हाथियों के राजा भीमसेन के हाथी ने उसका पीछा किया, जैसे तेज हवा से उड़ा हुआ बादल हवा से उड़े हुए बादल का पीछा करता है।

संनिवर्त्यात्मनो नागं क्षेमधूर्तिः प्रयत्नतः विव्याधाभिद्रुतं बाणैर्भीमसेनं सकुञ्जरम्

Having endeavoured to restrain his elephant, Kṣemadhūrti attacked Bhīmasena and his elephant and pierced them with arrows.

अपने हाथी को रोकने का प्रयास करते हुए, क्षेमधूर्ति ने भीमसेन और उनके हाथी पर हमला किया और उन्हें तीरों से घायल कर दिया।

ततः साधुविसृष्टेन क्षुरेण पुरुषर्षभः छित्त्वा शरासनं शत्रोर्नागमामित्रमार्दयत्

The bull among men used a razor-sharp arrow that was released well to sever his enemy's bow and oppressed his enemy's elephant.

मनुष्यों में बैल ने अपने दुश्मन के धनुष को तोड़ने के लिए एक बहुत ही तेज़ तीर का इस्तेमाल किया जो अच्छी तरह से छोड़ा गया था और अपने दुश्मन के हाथी पर अत्याचार किया।

ततः खजाकया भीमं क्षेमधूर्तिः पराभिनत् जघान चास्य द्विरदं नाराचैः सर्वमर्मसु

As if striking Bhīmā with a rod, Kṣemadhūrti used iron arrows to pierce the elephant everywhere in its inner organs.

क्षेमधूर्ति ने मानो भीम पर छड़ी से प्रहार किया हो, लोहे के तीरों से हाथी को उसके आंतरिक अंगों में हर जगह छेद दिया।

पुरा नागस्य पतनादवप्लुत्य स्थितो महीम् भीमसेनो रिपोर्नागं गदया समपोथयत्

Before the elephant could fall down, Bhīmasena descended and stationed himself on the ground. He struck down the enemy's elephant with a club.

इससे पहले कि हाथी नीचे गिरे, भीमसेन नीचे उतरे और जमीन पर बैठ गये। उसने शत्रु के हाथी को गदा से मार गिराया।

तस्मात्प्रमथितान्नागात्क्षेमधूर्तिमवद्रुतम् उद्यतासिमुपायान्तं गदयाहन्वृकोदरः

When that elephant was brought down, Kṣemadhūrti advanced with an upraised weapon. But Vṛkodara killed him with his club.

जब उस हाथी को नीचे लाया गया, तो क्षेमधुर्ति एक उठाए हुए हथियार के साथ आगे बढ़े। लेकिन वृकोदर ने उसे अपनी गदा से मार डाला।

स पपात हतः सासिर्व्यसुः स्वमभितो द्विपम् वज्रप्ररुग्णमचलं सिंहो वज्रहतो यथा

He was killed, with the sword in his hand, and having been brought down, lay down next to the elephant. He was like a lion killed by the vajra, alongside a mountain shattered by the vajra.

वह मारा गया, उसके हाथ में तलवार थी, और नीचे लाकर हाथी के बगल में लेट गया। वह वज्र से मारे गये एक सिंह के समान था, जो वज्र से टूटे हुए पर्वत के निकट था।

निहतं नृपतिं दृष्ट्वा कुलूतानां यशस्करम् प्राद्रवद्व्यथिता सेना त्वदीया भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! On seeing that the illustrious king of Kulūta had been killed, your soldiers were distressed and fled.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! यह देखकर कि कुलुता का प्रतापी राजा मारा गया, आपके सैनिक व्यथित हो गये और भाग गये।
