जनमेजय उवाच श्रुत्वा कर्णं हतं युद्धे पुत्रांश्चैवापलायिनः नरेन्द्रः किंचिदाश्वस्तो द्विजश्रेष्ठ किमब्रवीत्

Janamejaya asked: O foremost among brāhmana-s! On hearing that Karṇa had been killed in that battle and that his sons had run away, how was that Indra among kings assured and what did he say?

जनमेजय ने पूछा: हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! यह सुनकर कि युद्ध में कर्ण मारा गया और उसके पुत्र भाग गये, राजाओं में इन्द्र को किस प्रकार आश्वासन हुआ और उसने क्या कहा?

प्राप्तवान्परमं दुःखं पुत्रव्यसनजं महत् तस्मिन्यदुक्तवान्काले तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः

Because of the great disaster that confronted his sons, he suffered from supreme grief. What did he say at that time? I am asking you. Tell me.

अपने पुत्रों पर आई महान विपत्ति के कारण, उन्हें अत्यधिक दुःख का सामना करना पड़ा। उस वक्त उन्होंने क्या कहा था? मैं तुमसे पुछ रहा हूं। मुझे बताओ।

वैशंपायन उवाच श्रुत्वा कर्णस्य निधनमश्रद्धेयमिवाद्भुतम् भूतसंमोहनं भीमं मेरोः पर्यसनं यथा

Vaiśampāyana replied: He heard of Karṇa's death, which was unbelievable and extraordinary. It was so terrible that it paralysed all beings, as if Mount Meru had moved.

वैशम्पायन ने उत्तर दिया: उन्होंने कर्ण की मृत्यु के बारे में सुना, जो अविश्वसनीय और असाधारण थी। यह इतना भयानक था कि इसने सभी प्राणियों को स्तब्ध कर दिया, मानो मेरु पर्वत हिल गया हो।

चित्तमोहमिवायुक्तं भार्गवस्य महामतेः पराजयमिवेन्द्रस्य द्विषद्भ्यो भीमकर्मणः

It was as if the senses of the immensely wise Bhārgava had got confused, or that Indra, the performer of terrible deeds, had been defeated and shattered by his enemies.

ऐसा जान पड़ता था, मानो परम बुद्धिमान भार्गव की इन्द्रियाँ भ्रमित हो गयी हों, अथवा भयंकर कर्म करने वाला इन्द्र अपने शत्रुओं से पराजित होकर चूर-चूर हो गया हो।

दिवः प्रपतनं भानोरुर्व्यामिव महाद्युतेः संशोषणमिवाचिन्त्यं समुद्रस्याक्षयाम्भसः

It was as if the immensely radiant sun had fallen down from the sky onto the earth, or the unthinkable drying up of the waters from the ocean.

यह ऐसा था मानो अत्यधिक दीप्तिमान सूर्य आकाश से पृथ्वी पर गिर गया हो, या समुद्र का पानी अकल्पनीय रूप से सूख रहा हो।

महीवियद्दिगीशानां सर्वनाशमिवाद्भुतम् कर्मणोरिव वैफल्यमुभयोः पुण्यपापयोः

It was as extraordinary as the earth, the sky and all the directions being destroyed. It was as if both good and evil deeds had become fruitless.

यह पृथ्वी, आकाश और सभी दिशाओं के नष्ट हो जाने जैसा असाधारण था। ऐसा लगा मानो अच्छे और बुरे दोनों कर्म निष्फल हो गए हों।

संचिन्त्य निपुणं बुद्ध्या धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः नेदमस्तीति संचिन्त्य कर्णस्य निधनं प्रति

Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men, used his intelligence to skilfully think about this. With Karṇa killed, he thought that his side had been destroyed.

मनुष्यों के स्वामी धृतराष्ट्र ने इस बारे में कुशलता से सोचने के लिए अपनी बुद्धि का उपयोग किया। कर्ण के मारे जाने पर उसने सोचा कि उसका पक्ष नष्ट हो गया है।

प्राणिनामेतदात्मत्वात्स्यादपीति विनाशनम् शोकाग्निना दह्यमानो धम्यमान इवाशयः

He came around to the view that all the other beings would similarly be destroyed. He was scorched by the flames of sorrow and his heart could find no solace.

उसे यह विचार आया कि अन्य सभी प्राणी भी इसी प्रकार नष्ट हो जायेंगे। वह दुःख की ज्वाला से झुलस गया था और उसके हृदय को कोई शान्ति नहीं मिल रही थी।

विध्वस्तात्मा श्वसन्दीनो हा हेत्युक्त्वा सुदुःखितः विललाप महाराज धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः

His soul was shattered and he sighed in distress. He was extremely miserable and lamented. O great king! Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Ambikā's son, lamented in woe.

उसकी आत्मा चकनाचूर हो गई और उसने संकट में आह भरी। वह अत्यंत दुखी और विलाप करने लगा। हे महान राजा! अंबिका के पुत्र धृतराष्ट्र ने दुःख से विलाप किया।

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच संजयाधिरथो वीरः सिंहद्विरदविक्रमः वृषमप्रतिमस्कन्धो वृषभाक्षगतिस्वनः

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya! Adhiratha's son was brave. He was like a lion or an elephant in his valour. His shoulders were like that of a bull. His eyes, gait and voice were like those of a bull.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: हे संजय! अधिरथ का पुत्र वीर था। वह वीरता में सिंह अथवा हाथी के समान था। उसके कंधे बैल के समान थे। उसकी आंखें, चाल और आवाज बैल जैसी थी।

वृषभो वृषभस्येव यो युद्धे न निवर्तते शत्रोरपि महेन्द्रस्य वज्रसंहननो युवा

He was a bull and like a bull. He was young and was capable of withstanding the vajra. He did not retreat from a battle, even if the adversary were to be the great Indra.

वह बैल था और बैल जैसा था। वह युवा था और वज्र को झेलने में सक्षम था। वह युद्ध से पीछे नहीं हटता था, भले ही उसका प्रतिद्वंद्वी महान इंद्र ही क्यों न हो।

यस्य ज्यातलशब्देन शरवृष्टिरवेण च रथाश्वनरमातङ्गा नावतिष्ठन्ति संयुगे

Because of his bowstring twanging against his palms and because of the shower of his arrows, chariots, horses, men and elephants could not stand before him in a battle.

उसके धनुष की प्रत्यंचा उसकी हथेलियों से टकराने के कारण और उसके बाणों की वर्षा के कारण युद्ध में रथ, घोड़े, मनुष्य और हाथी उसके सामने टिक नहीं पाते थे।

यमाश्रित्य महाबाहुं द्विषत्संघघ्नमच्युतम् दुर्योधनोऽकरोद्वैरं पाण्डुपुत्रैर्महाबलैः

He was mighty-armed and without decay. He was the slayer of large numbers of the enemy. Depending on him, Duryodhana ventured to provoke an enmity with the immensely strong sons of Pāṇḍu.

वह महाबाहु और क्षयरहित था। वह बड़ी संख्या में शत्रुओं का संहार करने वाला था। उस पर भरोसा करते हुए, दुर्योधन ने पांडु के अत्यंत शक्तिशाली पुत्रों के साथ शत्रुता भड़काने का साहस किया।

स कथं रथिनां श्रेष्ठः कर्णः पार्थेन संयुगे निहतः पुरुषव्याघ्रः प्रसह्यासह्यविक्रमः

How could Karṇa, best of rāṭha-s, have been brought down by Pārtha in the battle? He was capable of withstanding valour that is impossible to counter. How could that tiger among men have been killed?

रथ-श्रेष्ठ कर्ण को युद्ध में पार्थ द्वारा कैसे पराजित किया जा सकता था? वह ऐसी वीरता का सामना करने में सक्षम था जिसका मुकाबला करना असंभव है। मनुष्यों के बीच का वह बाघ कैसे मारा गया होगा?

यो नामन्यत वै नित्यमच्युतं न धनंजयम् न वृष्णीनपि तानन्यान्स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः

Depending on the strength of his own arms, he never showed any reverence towards Acyuta, Dhanañjayā or the Vṛṣṇi-s.

अपनी भुजाओं की ताकत के आधार पर, उन्होंने कभी भी अच्युत, धनंजय या वृष्णि-स के प्रति कोई श्रद्धा नहीं दिखाई।

शार्ङ्गगाण्डीवधन्वानौ सहितावपराजितौ अहं दिव्याद्रथादेकः पातयिष्यामि संयुगे

"The wielders of the Śārṅga and Gāṇḍīva bows are undefeated. When they are together, on their divine chariot, I will alone bring them down in the battle."

"शारंग और गाण्डीव धनुष धारक अपराजित हैं। जब वे एक साथ होंगे, अपने दिव्य रथ पर, मैं अकेले ही उन्हें युद्ध में उतारूंगा।"

इति यः सततं मन्दमवोचल्लोभमोहितम् दुर्योधनमपादीनं राज्यकामुकमातुरम्

He always spoke these words to the wicked and evil Duryodhana, who was afflicted by desire for the kingdom and was confused because of his greed for what was undesirable.

ये शब्द वे हमेशा दुष्ट और दुष्ट दुर्योधन से कहते थे, जो राज्य की इच्छा से पीड़ित था और अवांछनीय चीज़ों के लालच के कारण भ्रमित था।

यश्चाजैषीदतिबलानमित्रानपि दुर्जयान् गान्धारान्मद्रकान्मत्स्यांस्त्रिगर्तांस्तङ्गणाञ्शकान्

He is the one who defeated powerful enemies who were extremely difficult to vanquish—the Gāndhāra-s, the Madraka-s, the Mātsya-s, the Trigarta-s, the Taṅgana-s, the Śāka-s,

वह वह है जिसने शक्तिशाली शत्रुओं को हराया था जिन्हें जीतना बेहद मुश्किल था - गांधार-एस, मद्रक-एस, मत्स्य-एस, त्रिगर्त-एस, तंगान-एस, शक-एस,

पाञ्चालांश्च विदेहांश्च कुणिन्दान्काशिकोसलान् सुह्मानङ्गांश्च पुण्ड्रांश्च निषादान्वङ्गकीचकान्

the Pāñcāla-s, the Videha-s, the Kuṇinda-s, the Kāśi-s, the Kosalā-s, the Suhma-s, the Aṅgas, the Puṇḍra-s, the Niṣāda-s, the Vaṅga-s, the Kīcaka-s,

पंचाल-स, विदेह-स, कुणिंद-स, काशी-स, कोशल-स, सुहम-स, अंग, पुंड्र-स, निषद-स, वंग-स, कीचक-स,

वत्सान्कलिङ्गांस्तरलानश्मकानृषिकांस्तथा यो जित्वा समरे वीरश्चक्रे बलिभृतः पुरा

the Vatsa-s, the Kāliṅga-s, the Tarala-s, the Aśmaka-s and the Ṛṣika-s. In earlier times, using his strength, the brave one defeated all of these in battles.

वत्स-स, कलिंग-स, तरल-स, अश्मक-स और ऋषिक-स। पहले के समय में वीर अपनी शक्ति का प्रयोग करके इन सभी को युद्ध में परास्त कर देता था।

उच्चैःश्रवा वरोऽश्वानां राज्ञां वैश्रवणो वरः वरो महेन्द्रो देवानां कर्णः प्रहरतां वरः

Just as Uchchaihshrava is supreme among horses, Vaiśravaṇa is supreme among yakṣa-s and the great Indra is supreme among gods, Karṇa was supreme among those who could strike.

जिस प्रकार घोड़ों में उच्चैःश्रवा श्रेष्ठ है, यक्षों में वैश्रवण श्रेष्ठ है और देवताओं में महान इंद्र श्रेष्ठ हैं, उसी प्रकार प्रहार करने वालों में कर्ण श्रेष्ठ थे।

यं लब्ध्वा मागधो राजा सान्त्वमानार्थगौरवैः अरौत्सीत्पार्थिवं क्षत्रमृते कौरवयादवान्

Having obtained and pacified him through riches and honours, the king of Māgadha wished to fight with all the kṣatriya-s on earth, with the exception of the Kaurava-s and the Yādava-s.

धन और सम्मान के माध्यम से उसे प्राप्त करने और शांत करने के बाद, मगध के राजा ने कौरवों और यादवों को छोड़कर, पृथ्वी पर सभी क्षत्रियों के साथ युद्ध करना चाहा।

तं श्रुत्वा निहतं कर्णं द्वैरथे सव्यसाचिना शोकार्णवे निमग्नोऽहमप्लवः सागरे यथा

On hearing of Karṇa's death in the duel with Savyasachi, I am immersed in an ocean of grief. It is as if I am on an ocean without a boat.

सव्यसाची के साथ द्वन्द्वयुद्ध में कर्ण की मृत्यु का समाचार सुनकर मैं शोक के सागर में डूब गया हूँ। यह ऐसा है मानो मैं बिना नाव के सागर में हूं।

ईदृशैर्यद्यहं दुःखैर्न विनश्यामि संजय वज्राद्दृढतरं मन्ये हृदयं मम दुर्भिदम्

O Sañjaya! That I do not perish from sorrows such as these, I think that my heart cannot be shattered and must be harder than the vajra.

हे संजय! मैं इस तरह के दुखों से नष्ट न हो जाऊं, मुझे लगता है कि मेरा दिल टूट नहीं सकता और यह वज्र से भी अधिक कठोर होगा।

ज्ञातिसंबन्धिमित्राणामिमं श्रुत्वा पराजयम् को मदन्यः पुमाँल्लोके न जह्यात्सूत जीवितम्

I have heard about the defeat of my kin, matrimonial allies and friends. O sūta! Other than an unfortunate one like me, which other man in the world would not have given up his life?

मैंने अपने रिश्तेदारों, वैवाहिक सहयोगियों और दोस्तों की हार के बारे में सुना है। हे सुता! मुझ जैसे अभागे को छोड़कर संसार में ऐसा कौन मनुष्य होगा, जिसने प्राण न त्यागे होंगे?

विषमग्निं प्रपातं वा पर्वताग्रादहं वृणे न हि शक्ष्यामि दुःखानि सोढुं कष्टानि संजय

I wish for poison, or fire. I desire to fall down from the summit of a mountain. O Sañjaya! I am incapable of bearing this misery and hardship.

मैं जहर, या आग की कामना करता हूं। मैं किसी पहाड़ की चोटी से नीचे गिरना चाहता हूँ। हे संजय! मैं इस दुःख और कठिनाई को सहने में असमर्थ हूँ।

संजय उवाच श्रिया कुलेन यशसा तपसा च श्रुतेन च त्वामद्य सन्तो मन्यन्ते ययातिमिव नाहुषम्

Sañjaya replied: O king! In prosperity, lineage, fame, austerities and learning, the virtuous ones regard you to be the equal of Yayāti, Nāhuṣa's son.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: हे राजा! समृद्धि, वंश, प्रसिद्धि, तपस्या और विद्या में पुण्यात्मा लोग तुम्हें नहुष के पुत्र ययाति के समान मानते हैं।

श्रुते महर्षिप्रतिमः कृतकृत्योऽसि पार्थिव पर्यवस्थापयात्मानं मा विषादे मनः कृथाः

You are like a maharṣi in your learning and are accomplished in your deeds. Find solace inside your own self. Do not give way to this sorrow in your mind.

आप अपनी विद्या में एक महर्षि के समान हैं और अपने कर्मों में निपुण हैं। अपने अंदर सांत्वना खोजें। इस दुःख को अपने मन में जगह न दें।

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच दैवमेव परं मन्ये धिक्पौरुषमनर्थकम् यत्र रामप्रतीकाशः कर्णोऽहन्यत संयुगे

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: I think that destiny is supreme. Shame on manliness, it is futile. Karṇa was the equal of Rāma and has been killed in this battle.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: मुझे लगता है कि भाग्य सर्वोच्च है। मर्दानगी को धिक्कार है, यह व्यर्थ है। कर्ण राम के समकक्ष था और इस युद्ध में मारा गया है।

हत्वा युधिष्ठिरानीकं पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजान् प्रताप्य शरवर्षेण दिशः सर्वा महारथः

He killed Yudhiṣṭhira's soldiers and the Pāñcāla-s who roamed around in their chariots. With his showers of arrows, the mahāratha scorched all the directions.

उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर के सैनिकों और रथों पर घूमने वाले पांचालों को मार डाला। महारथी ने अपने बाणों की वर्षा से समस्त दिशाओं को झुलसा दिया।

मोहयित्वा रणे पार्थान्वज्रहस्त इवासुरान् स कथं निहतः शेते वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः

In the battle, he confounded the Pārtha-s, like the wielder of the vajra against the āsura-s. How can he have been killed? How can he lie down, like a tree that has been shattered by the storm?

युद्ध में उन्होंने असुरों के विरुद्ध वज्रधारी की भाँति पार्थों को पराजित कर दिया। उसे कैसे मारा जा सकता है? वह तूफान से टूटे हुए पेड़ की तरह कैसे लेट सकता है?

शोकस्यान्तं न पश्यामि समुद्रस्येव विप्लुकाः चिन्ता मे वर्धते तीव्रा मुमूर्षा चापि जायते

I do not see an end to my sorrows and seem to be in an endless ocean. My anxiety is increasing. It is terrible. The desire to die is increasing.

मुझे अपने दुखों का कोई अंत नहीं दिख रहा है और ऐसा लग रहा है जैसे मैं एक अंतहीन सागर में डूबा हुआ हूं। मेरी चिंता बढ़ती जा रही है. यह भयानक है. मरने की चाहत बढ़ती जा रही है.

कर्णस्य निधनं श्रुत्वा विजयं फल्गुनस्य च अश्रद्धेयमहं मन्ये वधं कर्णस्य संजय

I have heard about Karṇa's death and Phālguna's victory. But I do not think that Karṇa's death is believable.

मैंने कर्ण की मृत्यु और फाल्गुन की विजय के बारे में सुना है। लेकिन मुझे नहीं लगता कि कर्ण की मृत्यु विश्वसनीय है।

वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं सुदृढं मम यच्छ्रुत्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रं हतं कर्णं न दीर्यते

It is certain that my heart has the essence of the vajra. It is extremely firm. On hearing about the death of Karṇa, tiger among men, it has not been shattered.

यह निश्चित है कि मेरे हृदय में वज्र का सार है। यह अत्यंत दृढ़ है. मनुष्यों में व्याघ्र कर्ण की मृत्यु के बारे में सुनकर, वह टूट नहीं गया है।

आयुर्नूनं सुदीर्घं मे विहितं दैवतैः पुरा यत्र कर्णं हतं श्रुत्वा जीवामीह सुदुःखितः

It is certain that, from earlier times, destiny has ordained an extremely long life for me. I am extremely miserable. But despite hearing about Karṇa's death, I am still alive.

यह निश्चित है कि, पहले से ही, नियति ने मेरे लिए बहुत लंबा जीवन निर्धारित किया है। मैं अत्यंत दुखी हूं. लेकिन कर्ण की मृत्यु के बारे में सुनने के बावजूद, मैं अभी भी जीवित हूं।

धिग्जीवितमिदं मेऽद्य सुहृद्धीनस्य संजय अद्य चाहं दशामेतां गतः संजय गर्हिताम् कृपणं वर्तयिष्यामि शोच्यः सर्वस्य मन्दधीः

O Sañjaya! I am without well-wishers now and shame on this life. O Sañjaya! I have been reduced to this reprehensible state today. I am wicked in my understanding. Everyone will grieve over my miserable state.

हे संजय! मैं अब शुभचिंतकों से रहित हूं और इस जीवन को धिक्कार है। हे संजय! मैं आज इस निंदनीय स्थिति में पहुँच गया हूँ। मैं अपनी समझ में दुष्ट हूं. मेरी दयनीय स्थिति पर हर कोई दुखी होगा।

अहमेव पुरा भूत्वा सर्वलोकस्य सत्कृतः परिभूतः कथं सूत पुनः शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् दुःखात्सुदुःखं व्यसनं प्राप्तवानस्मि संजय

Earlier, I used to be honoured by the entire world. O sūta! Having been defeated, how can I bear to remain alive? O Sañjaya! I have faced hardships and have moved from pain to greater pain.

पहले मुझे पूरी दुनिया सम्मानित करती थी. हे सुता! पराजित होने के बाद, मैं जीवित रहना कैसे सहन कर सकता हूँ? हे संजय! मैंने कठिनाइयों का सामना किया है और दर्द से बड़े दर्द की ओर बढ़ गया हूं।

तस्माद्भीष्मवधे चैव द्रोणस्य च महात्मनः नात्र शेषं प्रपश्यामि सूतपुत्रे हते युधि

There was Bhīṣma's death and then that of the great-souled Droṇa. With the son of the sūta having been killed in the battle, I do not see any remnants left.

भीष्म की मृत्यु हुई और फिर महाबली द्रोण की मृत्यु हुई। युद्ध में सूतपुत्र के मारे जाने से मुझे कोई अवशेष शेष नहीं दिखता।

स हि पारं महानासीत्पुत्राणां मम संजय युद्धे विनिहतः शूरो विसृजन्सायकान्बहून्

O Sañjaya! It was he who would have enabled my sons to tide over this great enmity. The brave one released many arrows and has been slain in the battle.

हे संजय! यह वह व्यक्ति था जिसने मेरे बेटों को इस महान शत्रुता से निपटने में सक्षम बनाया होगा। उस वीर ने अनेक बाण छोड़े और युद्ध में मारा गया।

को हि मे जीवितेनार्थस्तमृते पुरुषर्षभम् रथादतिरथो नूनमपतत्सायकार्दितः

When that bull among men has been killed, what is the point of my remaining alive? There is no doubt that the atiratha was afflicted by arrows and fell down from his chariot.

जब वह मनुष्यों में से बैल मारा गया, तो मेरे जीवित रहने का क्या प्रयोजन? इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि अतिरथ बाणों से पीड़ित होकर अपने रथ से गिर पड़े।

पर्वतस्येव शिखरं वज्रपातविदारितम् शयीत पृथिवीं नूनं शोभयन्रुधिरोक्षितः मातङ्ग इव मत्तेन मातङ्गेन निपातितः

It was like the summit of a mountain, shattered by the vajra. There is no doubt that he is lying down, adorning the earth, blood flowing from his wounds. He is like a crazy elephant, brought down by another elephant.

यह वज्र से टूटे हुए पर्वत शिखर के समान था। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि वह लेटा हुआ है, धरती का श्रृंगार कर रहा है, उसके घावों से खून बह रहा है। वह एक पागल हाथी की तरह है, जिसे दूसरे हाथी ने गिरा दिया है।

यद्बलं धार्तराष्ट्राणां पाण्डवानां यतो भयम् सोऽर्जुनेन हतः कर्णः प्रतिमानं धनुष्मताम्

He was the strength of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and fear for the Pāṇḍava-s. Karṇa was revered by all archers and has been slain by Arjuna.

वह धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के लिए शक्ति और पांडवों के लिए भय था। कर्ण सभी धनुर्धरों द्वारा पूजनीय था और अर्जुन द्वारा मारा गया है।

स हि वीरो महेष्वासः पुत्राणामभयंकरः शेते विनिहतो वीरः शक्रेणेव यथा बलः

The brave and great archer granted my sons freedom from fear. The brave one has been killed and is lying down, like Bāla by Śākra.

उस वीर और महान धनुर्धर ने मेरे पुत्रों को भय से मुक्ति दिलाई। वह वीर मारा गया है और शकर द्वारा बाला की तरह पड़ा हुआ है।

पङ्गोरिवाध्वगमनं दरिद्रस्येव कामितम् दुर्योधनस्य चाकूतं तृषितस्येव पिप्लुकाः

Duryodhana's wishes are now like a lame one desiring to walk, the wishes of a poor man being satisfied, or a thirsty man without drops of water.

दुर्योधन की इच्छाएँ अब एक लंगड़े की चलने की इच्छा, एक गरीब आदमी की इच्छा पूरी होने या पानी की बूंदों के बिना प्यासे आदमी की इच्छा जैसी हैं।

अन्यथा चिन्तितं कार्यमन्यथा तत्तु जायते अहो नु बलवद्दैवं कालश्च दुरतिक्रमः

We thought of one thing when performing our deeds, but it has turned out to be something else. Destiny is powerful and time is extremely difficult to transgress.

हमने कर्म करते समय कुछ और ही सोचा था, लेकिन हो कुछ और ही निकला। नियति शक्तिशाली है और समय का उल्लंघन करना अत्यंत कठिन है।

पलायमानः कृपणं दीनात्मा दीनपौरुषः कच्चिन्न निहतः सूत पुत्रो दुःशासनो मम

O sūta! What about my son, Duḥśāsana? When he was killed, was he running away? Was he weak, distressed in his soul and devoid of manliness?

हे सुता! मेरे बेटे दुःशासन के बारे में क्या? जब वह मारा गया तो क्या वह भाग रहा था? क्या वह कमज़ोर, आत्मा से व्यथित और पुरुषत्व से रहित था?

कच्चिन्न नीचाचरितं कृतवांस्तात संयुगे कच्चिन्न निहतः शूरो यथा न क्षत्रिया हताः

O son! Did he display inferior conduct in the battle? Was the brave one killed like other kṣatriya-s on our side have been slain?

हे वत्स क्या उसने युद्ध में घटिया आचरण प्रदर्शित किया? क्या हमारे पक्ष के अन्य क्षत्रियों की तरह ही वह बहादुर भी मारा गया था?

युधिष्ठिरस्य वचनं मा युद्धमिति सर्वदा दुर्योधनो नाभ्यगृह्णान्मूढः पथ्यमिवौषधम्

Yudhiṣṭhira's words have always been against war. They were like diet and medicine, but the foolish Duryodhana did not accept them.

युधिष्ठिर के शब्द सदैव युद्ध के विरुद्ध रहे हैं। वे आहार और औषधि के समान थे, परंतु मूर्ख दुर्योधन ने उन्हें स्वीकार नहीं किया।

शरतल्पे शयानेन भीष्मेण सुमहात्मना पानीयं याचितः पार्थः सोऽविध्यन्मेदिनीतलम्

Bhīṣma was lying down on a bed of arrows and desired a drink. The extremely great-souled Pārtha pierced the surface of the earth.

भीष्म बाणों की शय्या पर लेटे हुए थे और उन्हें पेय की इच्छा हुई। अत्यंत महात्मा पार्थ ने पृथ्वी की सतह को छेद दिया।

जलस्य धारां विहितां दृष्ट्वा तां पाण्डवेन ह अब्रवीत्स महाबाहुस्तात संशाम्य पाण्डवैः

O son! On seeing the fountain of water that was created by the Pāṇḍava, the mighty-armed one spoke about peace with the Pāṇḍavas.

हे वत्स पांडवों द्वारा बनाए गए पानी के फव्वारे को देखकर, महाबाहु ने पांडवों से शांति की बात कही।

प्रशमाद्धि भवेच्छान्तिर्मदन्तं युद्धमस्तु च भ्रातृभावेन पृथिवीं भुङ्क्ष्व पाण्डुसुतैः सह

"Be pacified. Let there be peace and let the hostilities of the war end. With fraternal feelings, enjoy the earth with the sons of Pāṇḍu."

"शांत हो जाओ। शांति हो और युद्ध की शत्रुता समाप्त हो। भाईचारे की भावना के साथ, पांडु के पुत्रों के साथ पृथ्वी का आनंद लो।"

अकुर्वन्वचनं तस्य नूनं शोचति मे सुतः तदिदं समनुप्राप्तं वचनं दीर्घदर्शिनः

My son did not act in accordance with those words and is no doubt sorrowing now. What the far-sighted one stated in his words has now transpired.

मेरे बेटे ने उन शब्दों के अनुसार कार्य नहीं किया और अब निस्संदेह दुखी है। दूरदर्शी व्यक्ति ने अपने शब्दों में जो कहा था वह अब घटित हो गया है।

अहं तु निहतामात्यो हतपुत्रश्च संजय द्यूततः कृच्छ्रमापन्नो लूनपक्ष इव द्विजः

O Sañjaya! My advisers have been killed and my sons have been slain. I have been reduced to this state because of the gambling match, like a bird without wings.

हे संजय! मेरे सलाहकार मारे गये और मेरे बेटे मारे गये। जुए के कारण मेरी ऐसी हालत हो गई है, जैसे बिना पंख वाले पक्षी की।

यथा हि शकुनिं गृह्य छित्त्वा पक्षौ च संजय विसर्जयन्ति संहृष्टाः क्रीडमानाः कुमारकाः

O Sañjaya! Boys cheerfully grasp birds in sport and having severed their wings, let them go.

हे संजय! लड़के ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी पक्षियों को खेल-खेल में पकड़ लेते हैं और उनके पंख काटकर उन्हें छोड़ देते हैं।

छिन्नपक्षतया तस्य गमनं नोपपद्यते तथाहमपि संप्राप्तो लूनपक्ष इव द्विजः

But because their wings have been severed, they cannot fly away. I have been reduced to that state, like a bird without wings.

परन्तु उनके पंख कट जाने के कारण वे उड़ नहीं सकते। मैं बिना पंख के पक्षी की तरह उस स्थिति में पहुंच गया हूं।

क्षीणः सर्वार्थहीनश्च निर्बन्धुर्ज्ञातिवर्जितः कां दिशं प्रतिपत्स्यामि दीनः शत्रुवशं गतः

I am destitute and weak in every way. I am without relatives and kin. I am miserable and have come under the subjugation of my enemies. Which direction will I turn to?

मैं हर तरह से दीन और निर्बल हूं. मैं बन्धु-बान्धवों से रहित हूँ। मैं दुखी हूं और अपने शत्रुओं के वश में हो गया हूं। मैं किस दिशा की ओर मुड़ूंगा?

दुर्योधनस्य वृद्ध्यर्थं पृथिवीं योऽजयत्प्रभुः स जितः पाण्डवैः शूरैः समर्थैर्वीर्यशालिभिः

For the sake of Duryodhana's prosperity, the lord conquered the earth. He was valorous, but has been vanquished by the capable and brave Pāṇḍava-s.

दुर्योधन की समृद्धि के लिए, भगवान ने पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त की। वह वीर था, लेकिन सक्षम और बहादुर पांडवों द्वारा पराजित हो गया।

तस्मिन्हते महेष्वासे कर्णे युधि किरीटिना के वीराः पर्यवर्तन्त तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

When the great archer, Karṇa, was killed in the battle by Kirīṭī, which brave ones surrounded him? O Sañjaya! Tell me that.

जब महान धनुर्धर कर्ण किरीटी द्वारा युद्ध में मारा गया तो किन वीरों ने उसे घेर लिया? हे संजय! मुझे वह बताओ.

कच्चिन्नैकः परित्यक्तः पाण्डवैर्निहतो रणे उक्तं त्वया पुरा वीर यथा वीरा निपातिताः

When he was slain by Pāṇḍava in the battle, I hope he was not abandoned and alone. O brave one! Earlier, you have told me how the valiant ones were brought down.

जब वह युद्ध में पांडवों द्वारा मारा गया, तो मुझे आशा है कि वह अकेला और त्यागा हुआ नहीं होगा। हे वीर! पहले आप मुझे बता चुके हैं कि कैसे शूरवीरों को नीचे गिरा दिया जाता था।

भीष्ममप्रतियुध्यन्तं शिखण्डी सायकोत्तमैः पातयामास समरे सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम्

Bhīṣma, supreme among wielders of all weapons, did not fight back and was brought down in the battle by Śikhaṇḍī's supreme arrows.

सभी शस्त्रधारियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ भीष्म ने जवाबी कार्रवाई नहीं की और शिखंडी के सर्वोच्च बाणों से युद्ध में मारे गये।

तथा द्रौपदिना द्रोणो न्यस्तसर्वायुधो युधि युक्तयोगो महेष्वासः शरैर्बहुभिराचितः निहतः खड्गमुद्यम्य धृष्टद्युम्नेन संजय

Similarly, Droṇa, the great archer, cast aside his weapons in the battle and immersed himself in yoga. O Sañjaya! He was already pierced with many arrows and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Drupada's son, raised his sword and slew him.

इसी प्रकार, महान धनुर्धर द्रोण ने युद्ध में अपने हथियार त्याग दिये और स्वयं को योग में लीन कर दिया। हे संजय! वह पहले ही कई बाणों से घायल हो चुका था और द्रुपद के पुत्र धृष्टद्युम्न ने अपनी तलवार उठाई और उसे मार डाला।

अन्तरेण हतावेतौ छलेन च विशेषतः अश्रौषमहमेतद्वै भीष्मद्रोणौ निपातितौ

Both of them were killed through a weakness, especially through deceit. That is what I have heard about the way Bhīṣma and Droṇa were brought down.

वे दोनों एक कमज़ोरी के कारण मारे गए, विशेषकर धोखे के कारण। जिस प्रकार भीष्म और द्रोण को नीचे गिराया गया था, उसके बारे में मैंने यही सुना है।

भीष्मद्रोणौ हि समरे न हन्याद्वज्रभृत्स्वयम् न्यायेन युध्यमानौ हि तद्वै सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते

Even the wielder of the vajra himself would not have been able to kill Bhīṣma and Droṇa in a battle, provided the fight took place through fair means. I tell you this truthfully.

यहां तक ​​कि स्वयं वज्रधारी भी युद्ध में भीष्म और द्रोण को मारने में सक्षम नहीं होता, बशर्ते लड़ाई उचित तरीकों से होती। यह बात मैं तुमसे सच-सच कहता हूँ।

कर्णं त्वस्यन्तमस्त्राणि दिव्यानि च बहूनि च कथमिन्द्रोपमं वीरं मृत्युर्युद्धे समस्पृशत्

Karṇa must have unleashed many divine weapons. The brave one was Indra's equal. How could death have touched him in the battle?

कर्ण ने अनेक दिव्यास्त्र चलाये होंगे। वह वीर इन्द्र के समकक्ष था। युद्ध में मृत्यु उसे कैसे छू सकती थी?

यस्य विद्युत्प्रभां शक्तिं दिव्यां कनकभूषणाम् प्रायच्छद्द्विषतां हन्त्रीं कुण्डलाभ्यां पुरंदरः

He possessed a divine spear that was as radiant as lightning. It was decorated with gold and was capable of killing the enemy. Purandara gave him that in exchange for the earrings.

उसके पास एक दिव्य भाला था जो बिजली के समान चमकीला था। वह सोने से सुसज्जित था और शत्रु को मारने में सक्षम था। पुरंदर ने उसे बालियों के बदले में दे दिया।

यस्य सर्पमुखो दिव्यः शरः कनकभूषणः अशेत निहतः पत्री चन्दनेष्वरिसूदनः

Among the arrows in his quiver, there was a divine arrow, decorated with gold. It was lying there and was smeared with sandalwood paste. It had a serpent in its mouth and the slayer of enemies did not use it.

उनके तरकश के तीरों में सोने से सजा हुआ एक दिव्य तीर भी था। वह वहीं पड़ा हुआ था और उस पर चंदन का लेप लगा हुआ था। इसके मुँह में एक साँप था और शत्रुओं का संहार करने वाला इसका प्रयोग नहीं करता था।

भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्वीरान्योऽवमन्य महारथान् जामदग्न्यान्महाघोरं ब्राह्ममस्त्रमशिक्षत

The brave one ignored mahāratha-s like Bhīṣma and Droṇa and learnt the extremely terrible brahmāstra from Jāmadagni's son.

उस वीर ने भीष्म और द्रोण जैसे महारथियों की उपेक्षा की और जमदग्नि के पुत्र से अत्यंत भयानक ब्रह्मास्त्र सीखा।

यश्च द्रोणमुखान्दृष्ट्वा विमुखानर्दिताञ्शरैः सौभद्रस्य महाबाहुर्व्यधमत्कार्मुकं शरैः

When the mightyarmed one saw that Droṇa and the others were afflicted by the arrows released by Subhadrā's son, he used his arrows to sever his bow.

जब महाबाहु ने देखा कि सुभद्रा के पुत्र द्वारा छोड़े गये बाणों से द्रोण तथा अन्य लोग पीड़ित हो गये हैं, तब उसने अपने बाणों से अपना धनुष तोड़ डाला।

यश्च नागायुतप्राणं वातरंहसमच्युतम् विरथं भ्रातरं कृत्वा भीमसेनमुपाहसत्

Bhīmasena possessed the strength of ten thousand elephants and the speed of the wind. But the one without decay deprived him of his chariot and laughed at his brother.

भीमसेन के पास दस हजार हाथियों का बल और वायु की गति थी। परन्तु जिसने क्षय न किया उसने उसे उसके रथ से वंचित कर दिया और उसके भाई पर हँसा।

सहदेवं च निर्जित्य शरैः संनतपर्वभिः कृपया विरथं कृत्वा नाहनद्धर्मवित्तया

He conquered Sahadeva with straight-tufted arrows. But having deprived him of his chariot, he took compassion on him and knowing about dharma, did not kill him.

उसने सीधे नुकीले बाणों से सहदेव को जीत लिया। परन्तु उसे रथ से वंचित कर देने पर उसने उस पर दया की और धर्म जानकर उसे नहीं मारा।

यश्च मायासहस्राणि ध्वंसयित्वा रणोत्कटम् घटोत्कचं राक्षसेन्द्रं शक्रशक्त्याभिजघ्निवान्

Ghaṭotkaca, Indra among the rākṣasa-s, used a thousand different kinds of māyā and was crazy in the battle. But he destroyed all those and killed him with the spear that he had obtained from Śākra.

घटोत्कच, राक्षसों के बीच इंद्र, एक हजार विभिन्न प्रकार की माया का उपयोग करता था और युद्ध में पागल था। लेकिन उसने उन सभी को नष्ट कर दिया और उसे उस भाले से मार डाला जो उसने शक्र से प्राप्त किया था।

एतानि दिवसान्यस्य युद्धे भीतो धनंजयः नागमद्द्वैरथं वीरः स कथं निहतो रणे

For all these days, Dhanañjayā has been frightened of fighting a duel with him. The brave one was like an elephant. How could he have been killed in the battle?

इतने दिनों तक, धनंजय उसके साथ द्वंद्व युद्ध करने से डरते रहे हैं। वह वीर हाथी जैसा था। वह युद्ध में कैसे मारा गया होगा?

रथसङ्गो न चेत्तस्य धनुर्वा न व्यशीर्यत न चेदस्त्राणि निर्णेशुः स कथं निहतः परैः

His chariot must have been shattered. His bow must have been fragmented. His weapons must have been exhausted. Otherwise, how could he have been killed by the enemy?

उसका रथ अवश्य चकनाचूर हो गया होगा। उसका धनुष अवश्य खंडित हो गया होगा। उसके हथियार ख़त्म हो गए होंगे. अन्यथा, वह शत्रु द्वारा कैसे मारा जा सकता था?

को हि शक्तो रणे कर्णं विधुन्वानं महद्धनुः विमुञ्चन्तं शरान्घोरान्दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि चाहवे जेतुं पुरुषशार्दूलं शार्दूलमिव वेगितम्

When Karṇa brandished his gigantic bow, who was capable of standing against him in the battle? In the battle, he released terrible arrows and divine weapons. Who could defeat that tiger among men? He was like a tiger in his force.

जब कर्ण ने अपना विशाल धनुष लहराया, तो युद्ध में उसके विरुद्ध खड़े होने में कौन सक्षम था? युद्ध में उसने भयानक बाण और दिव्यास्त्र छोड़े। मनुष्यों में उस बाघ को कौन हरा सकता है? वह अपने बल में बाघ के समान था।

ध्रुवं तस्य धनुश्छिन्नं रथो वापि गतो महीम् अस्त्राणि वा प्रनष्टानि यथा शंससि मे हतम् न ह्यन्यदनुपश्यामि कारणं तस्य नाशने

It is certain that his bow must have been shattered. His chariot must have got stuck in the ground. Else, his weapons must have got exhausted, since you have told me that he has been killed. Without these being destroyed, I can see no other reason for his death.

यह निश्चित है कि उसका धनुष टूट गया होगा। उसका रथ अवश्य ही भूमि में धँस गया होगा। नहीं तो उसके हथियार ख़त्म हो गए होंगे, क्योंकि आपने मुझे बताया है कि वह मारा गया है. इन्हें नष्ट किये बिना मुझे उनकी मृत्यु का कोई अन्य कारण नजर नहीं आता।

न हन्यामर्जुनं यावत्तावत्पादौ न धावये इति यस्य महाघोरं व्रतमासीन्महात्मनः

"Until I have killed Arjuna, I will not wash my feet." This is the extremely terrible vow that the great-souled one took.

"जब तक मैं अर्जुन को नहीं मार डालूँगा, मैं अपने पैर नहीं धोऊँगा।" यह अत्यंत भयानक व्रत है जो उस महात्मा ने लिया था।

यस्य भीतो वने नित्यं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः त्रयोदश समा निद्रां न लेभे पुरुषर्षभः

In the forest, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira was always terrified of him. The bull among men could not sleep for thirteen years.

वन में धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर उससे सदैव भयभीत रहते थे। मनुष्यों में बैल तेरह वर्ष तक सो नहीं सका।

यस्य वीर्यवतो वीर्यं समाश्रित्य महात्मनः मम पुत्रः सभां भार्यां पाण्डूनां नीतवान्बलात्

When my son forcibly brought the wife of the Pāṇḍu-s to the assembly hall, he depended on the valour and bravery of the great-souled one.

जब मेरा पुत्र पाण्डु-पत्नी को बलपूर्वक सभा भवन में ले आया, तो वह उस महात्मा की वीरता और वीरता पर निर्भर हो गया।

तत्र चापि सभामध्ये पाण्डवानां च पश्यताम् दासभार्येति पाञ्चालीमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि

While the Pāṇḍava-s looked on, in the midst of that assembly hall, in the assembly of the Kuru-s, he had spoken to Pāñcālī.

जब पांडव देख रहे थे, उस सभा कक्ष के बीच में, कुरु-सभा में, उन्होंने पंचाली से बात की थी।

यश्च गाण्डीवमुक्तानां स्पर्शमुग्रमचिन्तयन् अपतिर्ह्यसि कृष्णेति ब्रुवन्पार्थानवैक्षत

"You are the wife of slaves. You think that arrows released from Gāṇḍīva have the touch of the fire. O Kṛṣṇā! They are no longer your husbands." He said this while Pārtha looked on.

"तुम दासों की पत्नी हो। तुम सोचती हो कि गाण्डीव से छोड़े गए तीरों में अग्नि का स्पर्श होता है। हे कृष्ण! वे अब तुम्हारे पति नहीं हैं।" उसने यह कहा जबकि पार्थ देखता रहा।

यस्य नासीद्भयं पार्थैः सपुत्रैः सजनार्दनैः स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य मुहूर्तमपि संजय

O Sañjaya! Depending on the strength of his own arms, not for a single moment was he frightened of the Pārtha-s, their sons, or of Janārdana.

हे संजय! अपनी भुजाओं के बल के आधार पर, वह एक क्षण के लिए भी पार्थ-स, उनके पुत्रों या जनार्दन से भयभीत नहीं हुआ।

तस्य नाहं वधं मन्ये देवैरपि सवासवैः प्रतीपमुपधावद्भिः किं पुनस्तात पाण्डवैः

O son! I do not think that he could have been killed even by the gods, with Vāsava, even if they had angrily rushed against him, not to speak of the Pāṇḍava-s.

हे वत्स मुझे नहीं लगता कि वासव सहित देवताओं द्वारा भी उसे मारा जा सकता था, भले ही वे क्रोधपूर्वक उस पर टूट पड़े हों, पांडवों की तो बात ही छोड़ दें।

न हि ज्यां स्पृशमानस्य तलत्रे चापि गृह्णतः पुमानाधिरथेः कश्चित्प्रमुखे स्थातुमर्हति

When he touched the bowstring with his finger-guards, which man was capable of standing before Adhiratha's son?

जब उसने धनुष की प्रत्यंचा को अपनी उँगलियों से छुआ, तो कौन सा व्यक्ति अधिरथ के पुत्र के सामने खड़ा होने में सक्षम था?

अपि स्यान्मेदिनी हीना सोमसूर्यप्रभांशुभिः न वधः पुरुषेन्द्रस्य समरेष्वपलायिनः

It is possible for the earth to be deprived of the blazing rays of the sun or the moon. However, that Indra among men did not retreat from a battle and his death is impossible.

यह संभव है कि पृथ्वी सूर्य या चंद्रमा की चमकती किरणों से वंचित रह जाये। हालाँकि, मनुष्यों में इंद्र युद्ध से पीछे नहीं हटते थे और उनकी मृत्यु असंभव है।

यदि मन्दः सहायेन भ्रात्रा दुःशासनेन च वासुदेवस्य दुर्बुद्धिः प्रत्याख्यानमरोचयत्

The wicked one, evil in his intelligence, obtained him as an aide and with his brother, Duḥśāsana, rejected Vāsudeva's desirable proposal.

उस दुष्ट ने, जो अपनी बुद्धि में दुष्ट था, उसे एक सहयोगी के रूप में प्राप्त किया और अपने भाई दुःशासन के साथ मिलकर वासुदेव के वांछनीय प्रस्ताव को अस्वीकार कर दिया।

स नूनमृषभस्कन्धं दृष्ट्वा कर्णं निपातितम् दुःशासनं च निहतं मन्ये शोचति पुत्रकः

On seeing that Karṇa, with the shoulders of a bull, has been brought down and on seeing that Duḥśāsana has been killed, I think that my son must be grieving.

यह देखकर कि बैल के कंधे वाले कर्ण को नीचे लाया गया है और यह देखकर कि दु:शासन मारा गया है, मुझे लगता है कि मेरा पुत्र अवश्य ही शोक मना रहा होगा।

हतं वैकर्तनं श्रुत्वा द्वैरथे सव्यसाचिना जयतः पाण्डवान्दृष्ट्वा किं स्विद्दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्

On hearing that Vaikartaṇa has been killed in a duel with Savyasachi and on witnessing the victory of the Pāṇḍava-s, what did Duryodhana say?

यह सुनकर कि वैकर्तन सव्यसाची के साथ द्वंद्वयुद्ध में मारा गया है और पांडवों की जीत देखकर, दुर्योधन ने क्या कहा?

दुर्मर्षणं हतं श्रुत्वा वृषसेनं च संयुगे प्रभग्नं च बलं दृष्ट्वा वध्यमानं महारथैः

He heard that Durmarṣaṇa and Vṛṣasena had been killed in the battle. He saw the army was shattered and was being slaughtered by the mahāratha-s.

उसने सुना कि दुर्मर्षण और वृषसेन युद्ध में मारे गये हैं। उसने देखा कि सेना बिखर गयी है और महारथियों द्वारा उसका संहार किया जा रहा है।

पराङ्मुखांस्तथा राज्ञः पलायनपरायणान् विद्रुतान्रथिनो दृष्ट्वा मन्ये शोचति पुत्रकः

The kings were unwilling to fight and were running away. On seeing that the rāṭha-s were routed, I think that my son must be grieving.

राजा लड़ने को तैयार नहीं थे और भाग रहे थे। यह देखकर कि रथों को नष्ट कर दिया गया, मुझे लगता है कि मेरा बेटा शोक मना रहा होगा।

अनेयश्चाभिमानेन बालबुद्धिरमर्षणः हतोत्साहं बलं दृष्ट्वा किं स्विद्दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्

He is extremely insolent and wrathful because of his childish intelligence. On seeing that the army had lost its enterprise, what did Duryodhana say?

वह अपनी बचकानी बुद्धि के कारण अत्यंत ढीठ तथा क्रोधी है। यह देखकर कि सेना अपना उद्यम खो बैठी है, दुर्योधन ने क्या कहा?

भ्रातरं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनेन संयुगे रुधिरं पीयमानेन किं स्विद्दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्

On seeing that Bhīmasena had killed his brother in the battle and had drunk his blood, what did Duryodhana say?

यह देखकर कि भीमसेन ने युद्ध में अपने भाई को मार डाला और उसका खून पी लिया, दुर्योधन ने क्या कहा?

सह गान्धारराजेन सभायां यदभाषत कर्णोऽर्जुनं रणे हन्ता हते तस्मिन्किमब्रवीत्

With the king of Gāndhāra, he had proclaimed in the assembly hall, "Karṇa will kill Arjuna in the encounter."

गांधार के राजा के साथ उन्होंने सभा भवन में घोषणा की थी, "कर्ण मुठभेड़ में अर्जुन को मार डालेगा।"

द्यूतं कृत्वा पुरा हृष्टो वञ्चयित्वा च पाण्डवान् शकुनिः सौबलस्तात हते कर्णे किमब्रवीत्

On seeing him slain, what did he say? Earlier, having deceived the Pāṇḍava-s in the gambling match, Śākuni Saubala had rejoiced. O son! On seeing Karṇa killed, what did he say?

उसे मारा हुआ देखकर उसने क्या कहा? इससे पहले, जुए के मैच में पांडवों को धोखा देकर, शकुनि सौबल ने आनन्दित किया था। हे वत्स कर्ण को मारा हुआ देखकर उसने क्या कहा?

कृतवर्मा महेष्वासः सात्वतानां महारथः कर्णं विनिहतं दृष्ट्वा हार्दिक्यः किमभाषत

On seeing that Karṇa had been slain, what did the great archer, Hārdikya Kritavarma, the mahāratha of the Sātvata lineage, say?

यह देखकर कि कर्ण मारा गया, सात्वत वंश के महारथ, महान धनुर्धर हार्दिक्य कृतवर्मा ने क्या कहा?

ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या यस्य शिक्षामुपासते धनुर्वेदं चिकीर्षन्तो द्रोणपुत्रस्य धीमतः

Droṇa's son is intelligent. Brāhmana-s, kṣatriya-s and vaiśya-s worship him, for the sake of learning about dhanurveda.

द्रोण का पुत्र बुद्धिमान है. ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय और वैश्य धनुर्वेद के बारे में सीखने के लिए उनकी पूजा करते हैं।

युवा रूपेण संपन्नो दर्शनीयो महायशाः अश्वत्थामा हते कर्णे किमभाषत संजय

He is young, handsome, qualified, beautiful and immensely illustrious. O Sañjaya! On learning that Karṇa had been killed, what did Aśvatthāma say?

वह युवा, रूपवान, सुयोग्य, रूपवान और अत्यंत वैभवशाली है। हे संजय! यह जानकर कि कर्ण मारा गया, अश्वत्थामा ने क्या कहा?

आचार्यत्वं धनुर्वेदे गतः परमतत्त्ववित् कृपः शारद्वतस्तात हते कर्णे किमब्रवीत्

O son! Śāradvata Kṛpa is the preceptor in dhanurveda and possesses supreme knowledge. When Karṇa was killed, what did he say?

हे वत्स शरद्वात कृपा धनुर्वेद के उपदेशक हैं और सर्वोच्च ज्ञान रखते हैं। जब कर्ण मारा गया तो उसने क्या कहा?

मद्रराजो महेष्वासः शल्यः समितिशोभनः दिष्टं तेन हि तत्सर्वं यथा कर्णो निपातितः

Śalya, the great archer and the king of Madra, is the adornment of any assembly. It is destiny that he did everything so that Karṇa might be brought down.

महान धनुर्धर और मद्र देश के राजा शल्य किसी भी सभा के शोभा हैं। यह नियति है कि उसने सब कुछ किया ताकि कर्ण को नीचे लाया जा सके।

ये च केचन राजानः पृथिव्यां योद्धुमागताः वैकर्तनं हतं दृष्ट्वा किमभाषन्त संजय

There were kings of the earth who had come to fight. O Sañjaya! On seeing that Vaikartaṇa had been killed, what did they say?

वहाँ पृथ्वी के राजा थे जो लड़ने आये थे। हे संजय! यह देखकर कि वैकर्तन मारा गया, उन्होंने क्या कहा?

कर्णे तु निहते वीरे रथव्याघ्रे नरर्षभे किं वो मुखमनीकानामासीत्संजय भागशः

O Sañjaya! At the time when the brave Karṇa, tiger among rāṭha-s and bull among men, was killed, who were the leaders of the main divisions of the army?

हे संजय! जिस समय वीर कर्ण, रथियों में बाघ और मनुष्यों में बैल मारे गये, उस समय सेना की मुख्य टुकड़ियों के नेता कौन थे?

मद्रराजः कथं शल्यो नियुक्तो रथिनां वरः वैकर्तनस्य सारथ्ये तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

O Sañjaya! How did Śalya, supreme among rāṭha-s and king of Madra, come to be engaged as Vaikartaṇa's charioteer.

हे संजय! रथों में श्रेष्ठ और मद्र के राजा शल्य वैकर्तन के सारथी के रूप में कैसे नियुक्त हुए?

केऽरक्षन्दक्षिणं चक्रं सूतपुत्रस्य संयुगे वामं चक्रं ररक्षुर्वा के वा वीरस्य पृष्ठतः

Tell me about that. In the battle, who protected the right wheel of the son of the sūta? Who protected the left wheel? Who protected the brave one from the rear?

मुझे उसके बारे में बताओ. युद्ध में सूतपुत्र के दाहिने पहिये की रक्षा किसने की? बाएं पहिये की रक्षा किसने की? पीछे से वीर की रक्षा किसने की?

के कर्णं वाजहुः शूराः के क्षुद्राः प्राद्रवन्भयात् कथं च वः समेतानां हतः कर्णो महारथः

Which were the brave ones who did not abandon Karṇa and who were the inferior ones who ran away? When all those on our side were united, how was mahāratha Karṇa killed?

वे कौन से वीर थे जिन्होंने कर्ण को नहीं छोड़ा और कौन से हीन वीर थे जो भाग गये? जब हमारे पक्ष के सभी लोग एकजुट थे, तो महारथ कर्ण कैसे मारा गया?

पाण्डवाश्च कथं शूराः प्रत्युदीयुर्महारथम् सृजन्तं शरवर्षाणि वारिधारा इवाम्बुदम्

How did the brave ones among the Pāṇḍava-s advance against the mahāratha, creating a shower of arrows, like clouds showering down rain?

पाण्डवों में से शूरवीर कैसे बादलों की भाँति बाणों की वर्षा करते हुए महारथ के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े?

स च सर्पमुखो दिव्यो महेषुप्रवरस्तदा व्यर्थः कथं समभवत्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

There was a great and divine arrow, with a serpent at the mouth. O Sañjaya! How was it rendered unsuccessful? Tell me that.

वहाँ एक महान् एवं दिव्य बाण था, जिसके मुख पर सर्प बना हुआ था। हे संजय! इसे असफल कैसे बनाया गया? मुझे वह बताओ.

मामकस्यास्य सैन्यस्य हृतोत्सेधस्य संजय अवशेषं न पश्यामि ककुदे मृदिते सति

O Sañjaya! When the best of soldiers on our side have been killed, I do not see any refuge for the dispirited ones who are left.

हे संजय! जब हमारे पक्ष के सर्वश्रेष्ठ सैनिक मारे जा चुके हैं, तो जो निराश्रित लोग बचे हैं, उनके लिए मुझे कोई आश्रय नहीं दिखता।

तौ हि वीरौ महेष्वासौ मदर्थे कुरुसत्तमौ भीष्मद्रोणौ हतौ श्रुत्वा को न्वर्थो जीवितेन मे

Those two brave and great archers were supreme among those on the Kuru side. On hearing of the death of Bhīṣma and Droṇa, what is the point of my remaining alive?

वे दोनों वीर और महान धनुर्धर कुरु पक्ष के धनुर्धरों में सर्वोच्च थे। भीष्म और द्रोण की मृत्यु की बात सुनकर मेरे जीवित रहने का क्या मतलब?

न मृष्यामि च राधेयं हतमाहवशोभिनम् यस्य बाह्वोर्बलं तुल्यं कुञ्जराणां शतं शतम्

I cannot tolerate the thought of Rādheya, the ornament of a battle, being slain. The strength of his arms was equal to that of ten thousand elephants.

मैं युद्ध के आभूषण राधेय के मारे जाने के विचार को भी सहन नहीं कर सकता। उसकी भुजाओं का बल दस हजार हाथियों के बराबर था।

द्रोणे हते च यद्वृत्तं कौरवाणां परैः सह संग्रामे नरवीराणां तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

O Sañjaya! When Droṇa was killed, tell me everything that took place between those brave ones among men, between the Kaurava-s and the enemy?

हे संजय! जब द्रोण मारे गये, तो उन शूरवीरों, कौरवों और शत्रुओं के बीच क्या-क्या घटित हुआ, वह सब मुझे बताओ?

यथा च कर्णः कौन्तेयैः सह युद्धमयोजयत् यथा च द्विषतां हन्ता रणे शान्तस्तदुच्यताम्

How did Kaunteya-s prepared themselves for fighting with Karṇa. In the battle, how was the one without decay killed by his foes and how did he find peace?

कौन्तेय ने कर्ण से युद्ध के लिए स्वयं को कैसे तैयार किया? युद्ध में शत्रुओं ने उसे किस प्रकार मार डाला और उसे शांति कैसे प्राप्त हुई?
