संजय उवाच हते द्रोणे महेष्वासे तव पुत्रा महारथाः बभूवुराश्वस्तमुखा विषण्णा गतचेतसः

Sañjaya said: When Droṇa, the great archer, was killed, your mahāratha sons became pale in their faces. They grieved and were bereft of their senses.

संजय ने कहा: जब महान धनुर्धर द्रोण मारे गए, तो आपके महारथ पुत्रों के चेहरे पीले हो गए। वे दुःखी हुए और अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे।

अवाङ्मुखाः शस्त्रभृतः सर्व एव विशां पते अप्रेक्षमाणाः शोकार्ता नाभ्यभाषन्परस्परम्

O lord of the earth! All of them held weapons in their hands, but were silent. They were oppressed by grief and did not look at each other, or speak to each other.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उन सभी के हाथों में हथियार थे, लेकिन वे चुप थे। वे दुःख से पीड़ित थे और एक-दूसरे की ओर नहीं देखते थे, या एक-दूसरे से बात नहीं करते थे।

तान्दृष्ट्वा व्यथिताकारान्सैन्यानि तव भारत ऊर्ध्वमेवाभ्यवेक्षन्त दुःखत्रस्तान्यनेकशः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing that they were so distressed, your soldiers were also miserable and glanced upwards, extremely terrified.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह देखकर कि वे इतने व्यथित हैं, आपके सैनिक भी दुखी हो गये और अत्यंत भयभीत होकर ऊपर की ओर देखने लगे।

शस्त्राण्येषां च राजेन्द्र शोणिताक्तान्यशेषतः प्राभ्रश्यन्त कराग्रेभ्यो दृष्ट्वा द्रोणं निपातितम्

O Indra among kings! The weapons of those who remained were smeared in blood. On seeing that Droṇa had been brought down, these dropped from their hands.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! जो बचे थे उनके हथियार खून से सने हुए थे। यह देखकर कि द्रोण को नीचे गिरा दिया गया है, ये उनके हाथ से गिर गये।

तानि बद्धान्यनिष्टानि लम्बमानानि भारत अदृश्यन्त महाराज नक्षत्राणि यथा दिवि

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O great king! But some still hung down from their hands and were seen to be like stars in the firmament.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे महान राजा! परन्तु कुछ अभी भी अपने हाथों से लटके हुए थे और आकाश में तारों के समान दिखाई दे रहे थे।

तथार्तं स्तिमितं दृष्ट्वा गतसत्त्वमिव स्थितम् स्वं बलं तन्महाराज राजा दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्

O great king! They were stationed there, dispirited and bereft of enterprise. On seeing his own army in that state, King Duryodhana spoke these words.

हे महान राजा! वे वहाँ तैनात थे, निराश और उद्यम से रहित। उस राज्य में अपनी ही सेना को देखकर राजा दुर्योधन ने ये वचन कहे।

भवतां बाहुवीर्यं हि समाश्रित्य मया युधि पाण्डवेयाः समाहूता युद्धं चेदं प्रवर्तितम्

"I am fighting on the basis of the valour in your arms. Depending on this, I have challenged the Pāṇḍaveya-s to this battle.

"मैं आपकी भुजाओं की वीरता के आधार पर लड़ रहा हूं। इसी के आधार पर मैंने पांडवों को इस युद्ध के लिए चुनौती दी है।"

तदिदं निहते द्रोणे विषण्णमिव लक्ष्यते युध्यमानाश्च समरे योधा वध्यन्ति सर्वतः

With Droṇa having been killed in the battle, I discern that you are distressed. All the warriors who are fighting in the battle are being killed.

युद्ध में द्रोण के मारे जाने से मैं जानता हूँ कि आप व्यथित हैं। युद्ध में लड़ने वाले सभी योद्धा मारे जा रहे हैं।

जयो वापि वधो वापि युध्यमानस्य संयुगे भवेत्किमत्र चित्रं वै युध्यध्वं सर्वतोमुखाः

When fighting in a battle, there may be victory, or there may be death. What is strange about this? Face all the directions and fight.

युद्ध में लड़ते समय विजय भी हो सकती है और मृत्यु भी हो सकती है। इसमें अजीब बात क्या है? सभी दिशाओं का सामना करो और लड़ो।

पश्यध्वं च महात्मानं कर्णं वैकर्तनं युधि प्रचरन्तं महेष्वासं दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महाबलम्

Behold the great-souled warrior Karṇa Vaikartaṇa in the battle. The immensely strong and great archer is roaming around, possessing divine weapons.

युद्ध में महान योद्धा कर्ण वैकर्तन को देखो। अत्यंत बलशाली और महान धनुर्धर दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण किये हुए घूम रहा है।

यस्य वै युधि संत्रासात्कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः निवर्तते सदामर्षात्सिंहात्क्षुद्रमृगो यथा

Dhanañjayā, Kuntī's son, is frightened of fighting with him. He always retreats before that wrathful one, like small animals before a lion.

कुंती का पुत्र धनंजय उससे युद्ध करने से डरता है। वह सदैव उस क्रोधी के सामने पीछे हट जाता है, जैसे छोटे जानवर शेर के सामने।

येन नागायुतप्राणो भीमसेनो महाबलः मानुषेणैव युद्धेन तामवस्थां प्रवेशितः

The immensely strong Bhīmasena possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants. But in a human battle, he was reduced to a miserable state.

अत्यंत बलशाली भीमसेन में दस हजार हाथियों का बल था। लेकिन एक मानवीय युद्ध में, वह एक दयनीय स्थिति में पहुंच गया।

येन दिव्यास्त्रविच्छूरो मायावी स घटोत्कचः अमोघया रणे शक्त्या निहतो भैरवं नदन्

The brave Ghaṭotkaca knew the use of māyā. Using the divine weapon, the invincible spear, in the battle, he killed him and roared loudly.

बहादुर घटोत्कच माया का उपयोग जानता था। उन्होंने युद्ध में दिव्य अस्त्र अजेय भाले का प्रयोग कर उसे मार डाला और जोर से गर्जना की।

तस्य दुष्पारवीर्यस्य सत्यसंधस्य धीमतः बाह्वोर्द्रविणमक्षय्यमद्य द्रक्ष्यथ संयुगे

The intelligent one's valour is difficult to cross. He is unwavering in his aim. You will witness the inexhaustible strength in his arms in the battle today.

बुद्धिमान की वीरता का पार पाना कठिन है। वह अपने लक्ष्य पर अटल है। आज युद्ध में तुम उसकी भुजाओं में अक्षय शक्ति देखोगे।

द्रोणपुत्रस्य विक्रान्तं राधेयस्यैव चोभयोः पाण्डुपाञ्चालसैन्येषु द्रक्ष्यथापि महात्मनोः

You will behold both the great-souled Rādheya and Droṇa's son act against the Pāṇḍu and Pāñcāla soldiers.

आप महाबली राधेय और द्रोण के पुत्र दोनों को पांडु और पंचाल सैनिकों के विरुद्ध कार्य करते हुए देखेंगे।

सर्व एव भवन्तश्च शूराः प्राज्ञाः कुलोद्गताः शीलवन्तः कृतास्त्राश्च द्रक्ष्यथाद्य परस्परम्

All of you are brave, wise and born in noble lineages. You will witness each other's good conduct and skill in the use of weapons today."

आप सभी वीर, बुद्धिमान और कुलीन वंश में जन्मे हैं। आज आप एक-दूसरे के अच्छे आचरण और हथियारों के इस्तेमाल में कौशल को देखेंगे।"

एवमुक्ते महाराज कर्णो वैकर्तनो नृपः सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः प्रायुध्यत महाबलः

O great king! When the king had spoken in this way, the immensely strong Vaikartaṇa Karṇa roared like a lion.

हे महान राजा! जब राजा ने इस प्रकार कहा, तो अत्यंत बलशाली वैकर्तन कर्ण सिंह के समान दहाड़ने लगा।

स सृञ्जयानां सर्वेषां पाञ्चालानां च पश्यताम् केकयानां विदेहानामकरोत्कदनं महत्

As all of them looked on, he fought with the Sṛñjaya-s, Pāñcāla-s, Kekaya-s and Videha-s and caused great destruction.

जैसे ही उन सभी ने देखा, उसने सृंजय, पंचाल, केकय और विदेह से युद्ध किया और महान विनाश किया।

तस्येषुधाराः शतशः प्रादुरासञ्शरासनात् अग्रे पुङ्खे च संसक्ता यथा भ्रमरपङ्क्तयः

He released hundreds of showers of arrows from his bow. They seemed to be linked head to tail, like a flock of bees.

उन्होंने अपने धनुष से सैकड़ों बाणों की वर्षा की। वे मधुमक्खियों के झुंड की तरह सिर से पूंछ तक जुड़े हुए लग रहे थे।

स पीडयित्वा पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवांश्च तरस्विनः हत्वा सहस्रशो योधानर्जुनेन निपातितः

The spirited one afflicted the Pāñcāla-s and Pāṇḍava-s. He killed thousands of warriors and was brought down by Arjuna.

उस उत्साही व्यक्ति ने पंचालों और पांडवों को पीड़ित किया। उसने हजारों योद्धाओं को मार डाला और अर्जुन द्वारा उसे मार गिराया गया।
