युधिष्ठिर उवाच शतायुरुक्तः पुरुषः शतवीर्यश्च वैदिके कस्मान्म्रियन्ते पुरुषा बाला अपि पितामह

Yudhisthira said: In the Vedas, a man is said to live for a hundred years and have a hundred sons. O Grandfather, why do men die, even young ones?

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: वेदों में कहा गया है कि एक आदमी सौ साल तक जीवित रहता है और उसके सौ बेटे होते हैं। हे दादाजी, आदमी क्यों मरते हैं, यहाँ तक कि छोटे बच्चे भी?

आयुष्मान्केन भवति स्वल्पायुर्वापि मानवः केन वा लभते कीर्तिं केन वा लभते श्रियम्

By what does a man become long-lived or short-lived? By what does one attain fame or prosperity?

मनुष्य दीर्घजीवी या अल्पायु किससे होता है? किससे प्रसिद्धि या समृद्धि प्राप्त होती है?

तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण जपैर्होमैस्तथौषधैः जन्मना यदि वाचारात्तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह

By austerities, celibacy, muttering of prayers, oblations, and herbs, Or by birth or by speech, tell me that, O Grandfather.

तपस्या से, ब्रह्मचर्य से, प्रार्थनाओं, हव्यों और जड़ी-बूटियों के जप से, या जन्म से या वाणी से, हे दादा, मुझे बताओ।

भीष्म उवाच अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यन्मां त्वमनुपृच्छसि अल्पायुर्येन भवति दीर्घायुर्वापि मानवः

Bhishma said: Here I shall relate to you what you have asked me. By which a man becomes short-lived or long-lived.

भीष्म ने कहा: आपने मुझसे जो पूछा है वह मैं आपको बताऊंगा। जिससे मनुष्य अल्पायु या दीर्घायु होता है।

येन वा लभते कीर्तिं येन वा लभते श्रियम् यथा च वर्तन्पुरुषः श्रेयसा संप्रयुज्यते

By which one attains fame, by which one attains prosperity, And how a person should conduct himself to be united with the good.

जिससे यश प्राप्त होता है, जिससे समृद्धि प्राप्त होती है, और मनुष्य को अच्छाइयों से युक्त होने के लिए कैसा आचरण करना चाहिए।

आचाराल्लभते ह्यायुराचाराल्लभते श्रियम् आचारात्कीर्तिमाप्नोति पुरुषः प्रेत्य चेह च

By conduct one obtains longevity, by conduct one obtains prosperity. By conduct a man obtains fame in this world and the next.

आचरण से दीर्घायु प्राप्त होती है, आचरण से समृद्धि प्राप्त होती है। आचरण से मनुष्य इस लोक और परलोक में यश प्राप्त करता है।

दुराचारो हि पुरुषो नेहायुर्विन्दते महत् त्रसन्ति यस्माद्भूतानि तथा परिभवन्ति च

For a man of bad conduct does not find long life here. Because all beings are frightened of him and are humiliated by him.

क्योंकि बुरे आचरण वाला मनुष्य यहां दीर्घायु नहीं पाता। क्योंकि सभी प्राणी उससे डरते हैं और उससे अपमानित होते हैं।

तस्मात्कुर्यादिहाचारं य इच्छेद्भूतिमात्मनः अपि पापशरीरस्य आचारो हन्त्यलक्षणम्

Therefore, one who desires prosperity for oneself should practice here. Even for one with a sinful body, good conduct destroys bad characteristics.

इसलिए जो अपने लिए समृद्धि चाहता है उसे यहां अभ्यास करना चाहिए। पापी शरीर वाले के लिए भी अच्छा आचरण बुरे लक्षणों को नष्ट कर देता है।

आचारलक्षणो धर्मः सन्तश्चाचारलक्षणाः साधूनां च यथा वृत्तमेतदाचारलक्षणम्

The Dharma is characterized by conduct, and the virtuous are characterized by conduct. And as is the conduct of the good, so is this characterized by conduct.

धर्म की पहचान आचरण से होती है और धर्म की पहचान आचरण से होती है। और जैसा अच्छे का आचरण होता है, वैसा ही आचरण की विशेषता होती है।

अप्यदृष्टं श्रुतं वापि पुरुषं धर्मचारिणम् भूतिकर्माणि कुर्वाणं तं जनाः कुर्वते प्रियम्

Even if one has not seen or heard of a person who practices Dharma, if he is performing rites that bring prosperity, people will love him.

भले ही किसी ने धर्म का आचरण करने वाले व्यक्ति को न देखा हो या उसके बारे में नहीं सुना हो, यदि वह समृद्धि लाने वाले अनुष्ठान कर रहा है, तो लोग उससे प्रेम करेंगे।

ये नास्तिका निष्क्रियाश्च गुरुशास्त्रातिलङ्घिनः अधर्मज्ञा दुराचारास्ते भवन्ति गतायुषः

Those who are atheists, inactive, transgressing the guru and the scriptures, knowers of unrighteousness, of bad conduct, they become those whose life has passed.

जो नास्तिक, अकर्मण्य, गुरु और शास्त्रों का उल्लंघन करने वाले, अधर्म को जानने वाले, बुरे आचरण वाले होते हैं, उनकी आयु बीत चुकी होती है।

विशीला भिन्नमर्यादा नित्यं संकीर्णमैथुनाः अल्पायुषो भवन्तीह नरा निरयगामिनः

Those who are immoral, who transgress the boundaries, who always have promiscuous sex, Those men become short-lived and go to hell.

जो लोग अनैतिक होते हैं, जो मर्यादाओं का उल्लंघन करते हैं, जो सदैव परस्त्रीगमन करते हैं, वे मनुष्य अल्पायु होते हैं और नरक में जाते हैं।

सर्वलक्षणहीनोऽपि समुदाचारवान्नरः श्रद्दधानोऽनसूयश्च शतं वर्षाणि जीवति

Even a person who lacks all the characteristics but has good conduct, who is faithful and free from envy, lives for a hundred years.

वह व्यक्ति भी जिसमें सभी गुणों का अभाव हो, परंतु आचरण अच्छा हो, जो वफादार और ईर्ष्या-द्वेष से मुक्त हो, सौ वर्ष तक जीवित रहता है।

अक्रोधनः सत्यवादी भूतानामविहिंसकः अनसूयुरजिह्मश्च शतं वर्षाणि जीवति

One who is not angry, who speaks the truth, who does not harm beings, Who is not envious, who is not deceitful, lives for a hundred years.

जो क्रोध नहीं करता, जो सत्य बोलता है, जो प्राणियों को हानि नहीं पहुँचाता, जो ईर्ष्यालु नहीं, जो कपटी नहीं है, वह सौ वर्ष तक जीवित रहता है।

लोष्टमर्दी तृणच्छेदी नखखादी च यो नरः नित्योच्छिष्टः संकुसुको नेहायुर्विन्दते महत्

One who breaks clods of earth, cuts grass, eats his nails, One who is always unclean, one who is always in a state of impurity, does not obtain a long life here.

जो मिट्टी के ढेले तोड़ता है, घास काटता है, नाखून खाता है, जो सदैव अशुद्ध रहता है, जो सदैव अपवित्र अवस्था में रहता है, उसे यहां दीर्घायु नहीं मिलती।

ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते बुध्येत धर्मार्थौ चानुचिन्तयेत् उत्थायाचम्य तिष्ठेत पूर्वां संध्यां कृताञ्जलिः

He should wake up at the Brahma Muhurta and reflect on Dharma and Artha. Having risen and sipped water, he should stand with folded hands for the morning twilight.

उसे ब्रह्म मुहूर्त में उठकर धर्म और अर्थ का चिंतन करना चाहिए। उठकर पानी पीना चाहिए और प्रातःकाल के समय हाथ जोड़कर खड़े रहना चाहिए।

एवमेवापरां संध्यां समुपासीत वाग्यतः नेक्षेतादित्यमुद्यन्तं नास्तं यान्तं कदाचन

In this way, one should worship the evening twilight, controlling speech. One should never look at the rising sun or the setting sun.

इस प्रकार वाणी पर नियंत्रण रखकर संध्या गोधूलि की पूजा करनी चाहिए। उगते सूरज और डूबते सूरज को कभी नहीं देखना चाहिए।

ऋषयो दीर्घसंध्यत्वाद्दीर्घमायुरवाप्नुवन् तस्मात्तिष्ठेत्सदा पूर्वां पश्चिमां चैव वाग्यतः

The sages, by reason of their long twilight, attained long life. Therefore, one should always stand in the east and west, with the voice controlled.

ऋषियों ने अपनी लम्बी गोधूलि के कारण लम्बी आयु प्राप्त की। इसलिए हमेशा पूर्व और पश्चिम दिशा में आवाज पर नियंत्रण रखकर खड़ा होना चाहिए।

ये च पूर्वामुपासन्ते द्विजाः संध्यां न पश्चिमाम् सर्वांस्तान्धार्मिको राजा शूद्रकर्माणि कारयेत्

Those Brahmins who worship the morning twilight and not the evening twilight, the righteous king should make them perform the duties of a Shudra.

जो ब्राह्मण प्रातःकालीन गोधूलि की पूजा करते हैं, संध्या की नहीं, उनसे धर्मात्मा राजा को शूद्र के कर्तव्य का पालन करवाना चाहिए।

परदारा न गन्तव्याः सर्ववर्णेषु कर्हिचित् न हीदृशमनायुष्यं लोके किंचन विद्यते यादृशं पुरुषस्येह परदारोपसेवनम्

One should not have intercourse with another man's wife, ever, in any caste. For there is nothing in this world so unwholesome as the enjoyment of another man's

किसी भी जाति के व्यक्ति को कभी भी किसी अन्य पुरुष की पत्नी के साथ संभोग नहीं करना चाहिए। क्योंकि इस संसार में दूसरे मनुष्य के आनन्द से बढ़कर अपवित्र कुछ भी नहीं है

प्रसाधनं च केशानामञ्जनं दन्तधावनम् पूर्वाह्ण एव कुर्वीत देवतानां च पूजनम्

And the adornment of the hair, the application of collyrium, and the cleaning of the teeth, One should do in the morning, and the worship of the deities.

और बालों को सजाना, काजल लगाना और दांतों की सफाई करना, सुबह के समय करना चाहिए और देवताओं की पूजा करनी चाहिए।

पुरीषमूत्रे नोदीक्षेन्नाधितिष्ठेत्कदाचन उदक्यया च संभाषां न कुर्वीत कदाचन

He should not urinate or defecate on the ground. He should not have any conversation with a woman who is menstruating.

उसे जमीन पर पेशाब या शौच नहीं करना चाहिए। उसे रजस्वला स्त्री से बातचीत नहीं करनी चाहिए।

नोत्सृजेत पुरीषं च क्षेत्रे ग्रामस्य चान्तिके उभे मूत्रपुरीषे तु नाप्सु कुर्यात्कदाचन

He should not throw feces in a field or near a village. He should never urinate or defecate in water.

उसे किसी खेत में या गाँव के पास मल नहीं फेंकना चाहिए। उसे कभी भी पानी में पेशाब या शौच नहीं करना चाहिए।

प्राङ्मुखो नित्यमश्नीयाद्वाग्यतोऽन्नमकुत्सयन् प्रस्कन्दयेच्च मनसा भुक्त्वा चाग्निमुपस्पृशेत्

One should always eat facing the east, with the mind controlled, not disparaging the food. And having eaten, one should mentally offer oblations and touch the fire.

हमेशा पूर्व दिशा की ओर मुख करके, मन पर नियंत्रण रखकर भोजन करना चाहिए, भोजन का तिरस्कार नहीं करना चाहिए। और भोजन करने के बाद मन ही मन आहुति देनी चाहिए और अग्नि का स्पर्श करना चाहिए।

आयुष्यं प्राङ्मुखो भुङ्क्ते यशस्यं दक्षिणामुखः धन्यं पश्चान्मुखो भुङ्क्ते ऋतं भुङ्क्ते उदङ्मुखः

One eats for longevity facing east, for fame facing south, for prosperity facing west, and for truth facing north.

दीर्घायु के लिए पूर्व की ओर मुख करके, यश के लिए दक्षिण की ओर मुख करके, समृद्धि के लिए पश्चिम की ओर मुख करके तथा सत्य के लिए उत्तर की ओर मुख करके भोजन किया जाता है।

नाधितिष्ठेत्तुषाञ्जातु केशभस्मकपालिकाः अन्यस्य चाप्युपस्थानं दूरतः परिवर्जयेत्

He should not touch the hair, ashes, or skull of a dead person. He should also avoid sitting near someone else.

उसे किसी मृत व्यक्ति के बाल, राख या खोपड़ी को नहीं छूना चाहिए। उसे किसी दूसरे के पास बैठने से भी बचना चाहिए।

शान्तिहोमांश्च कुर्वीत सावित्राणि च कारयेत् निषण्णश्चापि खादेत न तु गच्छन्कथंचन

He should perform the Śāntihoma and have the Sāvitrī rites performed. And while sitting, he should eat, but never while walking.

उसे शांतिहोम करना चाहिए और सावित्री संस्कार करवाना चाहिए। और बैठे-बैठे ही खाना चाहिए, लेकिन चलते-फिरते कभी नहीं।

मूत्रं न तिष्ठता कार्यं न भस्मनि न गोव्रजे

One should not urinate while standing, or on ashes, or in a cowpen.

खड़े होकर, राख पर, शौचालय में पेशाब नहीं करना चाहिए।

आर्द्रपादस्तु भुञ्जीत नार्द्रपादस्तु संविशेत् आर्द्रपादस्तु भुञ्जानो वर्षाणां जीवते शतम्

One should not eat with wet feet, nor should one sleep with wet feet. One who eats with wet feet lives for a hundred years.

गीले पैरों से भोजन नहीं करना चाहिए और न ही गीले पैरों से सोना चाहिए। भीगे पैरों से भोजन करने वाला सौ वर्ष तक जीवित रहता है।

त्रीणि तेजांसि नोच्छिष्ट आलभेत कदाचन अग्निं गां ब्राह्मणं चैव तथास्यायुर्न रिष्यते

One should never touch the three fires, the cow, and the Brahmin. Then one's life is not lost.

तीन अग्नियों, गाय और ब्राह्मण को कभी नहीं छूना चाहिए। फिर किसी की जान नहीं जाती.

त्रीणि तेजांसि नोच्छिष्ट उदीक्षेत कदाचन सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ चैव नक्षत्राणि च सर्वशः

One should never look at the three fires, the sun, the moon, and all the stars.

मनुष्य को कभी भी तीन अग्नियों, सूर्य, चंद्रमा और सभी तारों की ओर नहीं देखना चाहिए।

ऊर्ध्वं प्राणा ह्युत्क्रामन्ति यूनः स्थविर आयति प्रत्युत्थानाभिवादाभ्यां पुनस्तान्प्रतिपद्यते

The vital airs rise up in the young man, but in the old man they go down. By rising up and saluting, he again obtains them.

जवान आदमी में प्राणवायु ऊपर उठती हैं, परन्तु बूढ़े आदमी में वे नीचे की ओर चली जाती हैं। उठकर प्रणाम करने से वह उन्हें पुनः प्राप्त कर लेता है।

अभिवादयेत वृद्धांश्च आसनं चैव दापयेत् कृताञ्जलिरुपासीत गच्छन्तं पृष्ठतोऽन्वियात्

He should pay homage to the elders and offer them a seat. He should stand with folded hands and follow behind when they leave.

उसे बड़ों को प्रणाम करना चाहिए और उन्हें आसन देना चाहिए। उन्हें हाथ जोड़कर खड़ा रहना चाहिए और जब वे जाएं तो उनके पीछे-पीछे चलना चाहिए।

न चासीतासने भिन्ने भिन्नं कांस्यं च वर्जयेत् नैकवस्त्रेण भोक्तव्यं न नग्नः स्नातुमर्हति स्वप्तव्यं नैव नग्नेन न चोच्छिष्टोऽपि संविशेत्

And one should not sit on a broken seat, nor should one avoid a broken copper vessel. One should not eat in a single garment, nor should one bathe naked. One should not sleep

और टूटे हुए आसन पर नहीं बैठना चाहिए और ना ही टूटे तांबे के बर्तन से बचना चाहिए। एक वस्त्र पहनकर भोजन नहीं करना चाहिए और न ही नग्न होकर स्नान करना चाहिए। सोना नहीं चाहिए

उच्छिष्टो न स्पृशेच्छीर्षं सर्वे प्राणास्तदाश्रयाः केशग्रहान्प्रहारांश्च शिरस्येतान्विवर्जयेत्

One should not touch the head when one is impure. All the vital airs have their abode there. One should avoid pulling the hair and striking the head.

अपवित्र होने पर सिर को नहीं छूना चाहिए। समस्त प्राणवायु का निवास वहीं है। बाल खींचने और सिर पर वार करने से बचना चाहिए।

न पाणिभ्यामुभाभ्यां च कण्डूयेज्जातु वै शिरः न चाभीक्ष्णं शिरः स्नायात्तथास्यायुर्न रिष्यते

One should not scratch the head with both hands. One should not bathe the head frequently. Thus one's life is not lost.

दोनों हाथों से सिर नहीं खुजलाना चाहिए। सिर को बार-बार नहाना नहीं चाहिए। इस प्रकार किसी की जान नहीं जाती.

शिरःस्नातश्च तैलेन नाङ्गं किंचिदुपस्पृशेत् तिलपिष्टं न चाश्नीयात्तथायुर्विन्दते महत्

One who has bathed the head with oil should not touch any part of the body with it. One should not eat sesame flour. Thus one attains great longevity.

जिसने सिर में तेल लगाकर स्नान किया हो उसे शरीर के किसी भी अंग को तेल से नहीं छूना चाहिए। तिल का आटा नहीं खाना चाहिए। इस प्रकार व्यक्ति को महान दीर्घायु प्राप्त होती है।

नाध्यापयेत्तथोच्छिष्टो नाधीयीत कदाचन वाते च पूतिगन्धे च मनसापि न चिन्तयेत्

He should not teach while unclean, nor should he study at any time. He should not even think in his mind about wind and foul smells.

उसे अशुद्ध अवस्था में नहीं पढ़ाना चाहिए और न ही किसी समय अध्ययन करना चाहिए। उसे मन में वायु तथा दुर्गन्ध का विचार भी नहीं करना चाहिए।

अत्र गाथा यमोद्गीताः कीर्तयन्ति पुराविदः आयुरस्य निकृन्तामि प्रजामस्याददे तथा

Here the verses uttered by Yama are recited by those who know the past: "I have shortened his life and taken away his offspring."

यहां अतीत को जानने वाले लोग यम द्वारा कहे गए श्लोकों का पाठ करते हैं: "मैंने उसका जीवन छोटा कर दिया है और उसकी संतानें छीन ली हैं।"

य उच्छिष्टः प्रवदति स्वाध्यायं चाधिगच्छति यश्चानध्यायकालेऽपि मोहादभ्यस्यति द्विजः तस्माद्युक्तोऽप्यनध्याये नाधीयीत कदाचन

One who recites while eating leftovers, or studies the Veda, Or a twice-born who, out of delusion, studies during a time when study is prohibited, Therefore, even when it

जो बचा हुआ भोजन करके पाठ करता है, या वेद का अध्ययन करता है, या द्विज जो भ्रमवश ऐसे समय में अध्ययन करता है, जब अध्ययन निषिद्ध है, इसलिए, जब भी

प्रत्यादित्यं प्रत्यनिलं प्रति गां च प्रति द्विजान् ये मेहन्ति च पन्थानं ते भवन्ति गतायुषः

Those who urinate against the sun, against the wind, against the cow, and against the brahmins, and those who urinate on the path, they have a short life.

जो लोग सूर्य के विपरीत, वायु के विपरीत, गाय के विरुद्ध, ब्राह्मण के विरुद्ध तथा रास्ते में मूत्र करते हैं, उनकी आयु अल्प होती है।

उभे मूत्रपुरीषे तु दिवा कुर्यादुदङ्मुखः दक्षिणाभिमुखो रात्रौ तथास्यायुर्न रिष्यते

One should defecate and urinate facing north during the day, and facing south during the night. Thus one's life is not lost.

दिन में उत्तर दिशा की ओर तथा रात्रि में दक्षिण दिशा की ओर मुख करके शौच एवं मूत्र त्याग करना चाहिए। इस प्रकार किसी की जान नहीं जाती.

त्रीन्कृशान्नावजानीयाद्दीर्घमायुर्जिजीविषुः ब्राह्मणं क्षत्रियं सर्पं सर्वे ह्याशीविषास्त्रयः

One should not despise three thin ones if one wishes to live long: A brahmin, a kshatriya, and a snake - all three are poisonous.

अगर कोई लंबे समय तक जीवित रहना चाहता है तो उसे तीन दुबले-पतले लोगों का तिरस्कार नहीं करना चाहिए: एक ब्राह्मण, एक क्षत्रिय और एक सांप - ये तीनों जहरीले हैं।

दहत्याशीविषः क्रुद्धो यावत्पश्यति चक्षुषा क्षत्रियोऽपि दहेत्क्रुद्धो यावत्स्पृशति तेजसा

An angry snake burns as long as it sees with its eyes. An angry Kshatriya burns as long as he touches with his energy.

क्रोधित साँप तब तक जलता है जब तक वह अपनी आँखों से देखता है। क्रोधित क्षत्रिय तब तक जलता है जब तक वह अपनी ऊर्जा से स्पर्श करता है।

ब्राह्मणस्तु कुलं हन्याद्ध्यानेनावेक्षितेन च तस्मादेतत्त्रयं यत्नादुपसेवेत पण्डितः

A brahmin destroys his family by meditation and by looking at it. Therefore, the wise one should carefully attend to this triad.

ब्राह्मण ध्यान और दर्शन से अपने कुल का नाश कर लेता है। इसलिए, बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को इस त्रय पर ध्यानपूर्वक ध्यान देना चाहिए।

गुरुणा वैरनिर्बन्धो न कर्तव्यः कदाचन अनुमान्यः प्रसाद्यश्च गुरुः क्रुद्धो युधिष्ठिर

One should never bear a grudge against one's teacher. One should please and honor one's teacher, O Yudhiṣṭhira, even when he is angry.

कभी भी अपने गुरु के प्रति द्वेष नहीं रखना चाहिए। हे युधिष्ठिर, मनुष्य को अपने गुरु को प्रसन्न करना चाहिए और उनका सम्मान करना चाहिए, भले ही वे क्रोधित हों।

सम्यङ्मिथ्याप्रवृत्तेऽपि वर्तितव्यं गुराविह गुरुनिन्दा दहत्यायुर्मनुष्याणां न संशयः

Even when the teacher is acting wrongly, one should behave properly toward him. There is no doubt that criticizing the teacher burns the life of human beings.

जब शिक्षक ग़लत कार्य कर रहा हो तब भी उसके प्रति उचित व्यवहार करना चाहिए। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि गुरु की निंदा करने से मनुष्य का जीवन जल जाता है।

दूरादावसथान्मूत्रं दूरात्पादावसेचनम् उच्छिष्टोत्सर्जनं चैव दूरे कार्यं हितैषिणा

One should urinate and defecate far away from the dwelling place, and wash the feet far away. One who desires welfare should dispose of the leftovers far away.

निवास स्थान से दूर ही मल-मूत्र त्याग करना चाहिए तथा पैर भी दूर ही धोना चाहिए। कल्याण चाहने वाले को बचे हुए भोजन को दूर ही फेंक देना चाहिए।

नातिकल्पं नातिसायं न च मध्यंदिने स्थिते नाज्ञातैः सह गच्छेत नैको न वृषलैः सह

Not at night, not at dawn, not at midday, Not with the unknown, not alone, not with the low-caste.

न रात में, न भोर में, न दोपहर में, न अज्ञात के साथ, न अकेले में, न नीच जाति के साथ।

पन्था देयो ब्राह्मणाय गोभ्यो राजभ्य एव च वृद्धाय भारतप्ताय गर्भिण्यै दुर्बलाय च

The path should be given to a brahmin, to cows, and to kings. To an elder, to a traveler, to a pregnant woman, and to a weak person.

ब्राह्मण, गौ और राजा को मार्ग देना चाहिए। किसी बुजुर्ग को, किसी यात्री को, किसी गर्भवती महिला को, और किसी कमज़ोर व्यक्ति को।

प्रदक्षिणं च कुर्वीत परिज्ञातान्वनस्पतीन् चतुष्पथान्प्रकुर्वीत सर्वानेव प्रदक्षिणान्

He should circumambulate the known trees, and make all the crossroads go to the right.

उसे ज्ञात वृक्षों की परिक्रमा करनी चाहिए, और सभी चौराहों को दाईं ओर जाना चाहिए।

मध्यंदिने निशाकाले मध्यरात्रे च सर्वदा चतुष्पथान्न सेवेत उभे संध्ये तथैव च

At midday, at night, and at midnight, always. One should not frequent crossroads or both twilights.

दोपहर में, रात में, और आधी रात को, हमेशा। व्यक्ति को बार-बार चौराहे या दोनों गोधूली बेला में नहीं जाना चाहिए।

उपानहौ च वस्त्रं च धृतमन्यैर्न धारयेत् ब्रह्मचारी च नित्यं स्यात्पादं पादेन नाक्रमेत्

Arrows of speech fly from the mouth, by which one is struck and grieves day and night. They fall on the non-vital parts of others; the wise do not release them

मुख से वाणी के बाण निकलते हैं, जिनके लगने से मनुष्य रात-दिन शोक करता रहता है। वे दूसरों के गैर-महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सों पर पड़ते हैं; बुद्धिमान लोग उन्हें नहीं छोड़ते

रोहते सायकैर्विद्धं वनं परशुना हतम् वाचा दुरुक्तं बीभत्सं न संरोहति वाक्क्षतम्

An arrowed forest grows again, a felled forest grows again, But a wound inflicted by harsh words does not heal.

तीर से मारा हुआ जंगल फिर उग आता है, काटा हुआ जंगल फिर से उग आता है, परन्तु कठोर शब्दों से लगा हुआ घाव नहीं भरता।

हीनाङ्गानतिरिक्ताङ्गान्विद्याहीनान्वयोधिकान् रूपद्रविणहीनांश्च सत्त्वहीनांश्च नाक्षिपेत्

Do not reject those with incomplete limbs, those with extra limbs, those without knowledge, those with superior lineage, Those without beauty or wealth, or those without merit.

अधूरे अंगों वाले, अतिरिक्त अंगों वाले, ज्ञानहीन, श्रेष्ठ वंश वाले, सुंदरता या धन से रहित या योग्यता से रहित लोगों को अस्वीकार न करें।

नास्तिक्यं वेदनिन्दां च देवतानां च कुत्सनम् द्वेषस्तम्भाभिमानांश्च तैक्ष्ण्यं च परिवर्जयेत्

Atheism, criticism of the Vedas, and disparaging of the gods, Hatred, pride, conceit, and harshness - these should be avoided.

नास्तिकता, वेदों की आलोचना और देवताओं की निंदा, घृणा, अहंकार, दंभ और कठोरता - इनसे बचना चाहिए।

परस्य दण्डं नोद्यच्छेत्क्रोद्धो नैनं निपातयेत् अन्यत्र पुत्राच्छिष्याद्वा शिक्षार्थं ताडनं स्मृतम्

One should not raise one's hand against another in anger, nor should one strike him. Except for one's son or disciple, striking for the purpose of instruction is remembered.

क्रोध में आकर दूसरे पर हाथ नहीं उठाना चाहिए और न ही उस पर प्रहार करना चाहिए। अपने पुत्र या शिष्य को छोड़कर शिक्षा के उद्देश्य से प्रहार करना याद किया जाता है।

न ब्राह्मणान्परिवदेन्नक्षत्राणि न निर्दिशेत् तिथिं पक्षस्य न ब्रूयात्तथास्यायुर्न रिष्यते

Do not revile Brahmins, do not indicate the stars, Do not speak of the date of the lunar fortnight, thus one's life is not lost.

ब्राह्मणों की निन्दा न करो, नक्षत्रों का संकेत न करो, चन्द्र पक्ष की तिथि का बखान न करो, इससे मनुष्य का जीवन नष्ट नहीं होता।

कृत्वा मूत्रपुरीषे तु रथ्यामाक्रम्य वा पुनः पादप्रक्षालनं कुर्यात्स्वाध्याये भोजने तथा

Having urinated or defecated, or having stepped on a street, one should wash one's feet, as well as during study and eating.

पेशाब या शौच करने के बाद, या सड़क पर कदम रखने के बाद, व्यक्ति को अपने पैर धोने चाहिए, साथ ही अध्ययन और भोजन करते समय भी।

त्रीणि देवाः पवित्राणि ब्राह्मणानामकल्पयन् अदृष्टमद्भिर्निर्णिक्तं यच्च वाचा प्रशस्यते

The gods have ordained three sacred things for the Brahmanas: What is not seen, what is purified by water, and what is praised by speech.

देवताओं ने ब्राह्मणों के लिए तीन पवित्र चीजें निर्धारित की हैं: जो नहीं देखा जाता है, जो पानी से शुद्ध किया जाता है, और जो वाणी द्वारा स्तुति की जाती है।

संयावं कृसरं मांसं शष्कुली पायसं तथा आत्मार्थं न प्रकर्तव्यं देवार्थं तु प्रकल्पयेत्

Oṃ namo buddhāya Oṃ namo buddhāya Oṃ namo buddhāya Oṃ namo buddhāya Oṃ namo buddhāya

ॐ नमो बुद्धाय ॐ नमो बुद्धाय ॐ नमो बुद्धाय ॐ नमो बुद्धाय ॐ नमो बुद्धाय

नित्यमग्निं परिचरेद्भिक्षां दद्याच्च नित्यदा वाग्यतो दन्तकाष्ठं च नित्यमेव समाचरेत् न चाभ्युदितशायी स्यात्प्रायश्चित्ती तथा भवेत्

One should always attend to the fire and always give alms. One should always be restrained in speech and practice tooth-cleaning. One should not sleep before sunrise and should perform expiation.

मनुष्य को सदैव अग्नि की सेवा करनी चाहिए और सदैव दान देना चाहिए। वाणी पर हमेशा संयम रखना चाहिए और दांतों की सफाई करनी चाहिए। सूर्योदय से पहले सोना नहीं चाहिए और प्रायश्चित करना चाहिए।

मातापितरमुत्थाय पूर्वमेवाभिवादयेत् आचार्यमथ वाप्येनं तथायुर्विन्दते महत्

Having risen from his seat, he should first pay homage to his mother and father. Or to his teacher, for thus he attains great longevity.

अपने स्थान से उठकर सबसे पहले उसे अपनी माता और पिता को प्रणाम करना चाहिए। अथवा अपने गुरु के पास, क्योंकि इस प्रकार वह महान दीर्घायु प्राप्त करता है।

वर्जयेद्दन्तकाष्ठानि वर्जनीयानि नित्यशः भक्षयेच्छास्त्रदृष्टानि पर्वस्वपि च वर्जयेत्

He should avoid the tooth-sticks that are to be avoided always. He should eat those seen in the scriptures, and avoid them even on the Parvan days.

उसे हमेशा दातुन से बचना चाहिए जिससे उसे हमेशा बचना चाहिए। उसे शास्त्रों में बताए गए पदार्थों को खाना चाहिए और पर्व के दिनों में भी उनसे बचना चाहिए।

उदङ्मुखश्च सततं शौचं कुर्यात्समाहितः

Always facing north, he should perform purification with a concentrated mind.

उसे सदैव उत्तर दिशा की ओर मुख करके एकाग्र मन से शुद्धि करनी चाहिए।

अकृत्वा देवतापूजां नान्यं गच्छेत्कदाचन अन्यत्र तु गुरुं वृद्धं धार्मिकं वा विचक्षणम्

One should not go anywhere else without having worshipped the deities. But one may go to a guru, an elder, or a righteous and wise person.

देवताओं की पूजा किये बिना कहीं भी नहीं जाना चाहिए। लेकिन कोई किसी गुरु, किसी बुजुर्ग या किसी धर्मात्मा और बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति के पास जा सकता है।

अवलोक्यो न चादर्शो मलिनो बुद्धिमत्तरैः न चाज्ञातां स्त्रियं गच्छेद्गर्भिणीं वा कदाचन

Not looking at a mirror, not being dirty, not being ignorant, not having sex with an unknown woman or a pregnant woman.

शीशा न देखना, गंदा न होना, अज्ञानी न होना, किसी अनजान स्त्री या गर्भवती स्त्री से यौन संबंध न बनाना।

उदक्शिरा न स्वपेत तथा प्रत्यक्शिरा न च प्राक्शिरास्तु स्वपेद्विद्वानथ वा दक्षिणाशिराः

One should not sleep with one's head towards the north or towards the west. But the wise one should sleep with one's head towards the east or towards the south.

उत्तर दिशा या पश्चिम दिशा की ओर सिर करके नहीं सोना चाहिए। लेकिन बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को पूर्व या दक्षिण दिशा की ओर सिर करके सोना चाहिए।

न भग्ने नावदीर्णे वा शयने प्रस्वपेत च नान्तर्धाने न संयुक्ते न च तिर्यक्कदाचन

One should not sleep on a broken or torn bed. One should not sleep in a place where there is a fire or where there is a union, or ever on one's side.

टूटे हुए या फटे हुए बिस्तर पर नहीं सोना चाहिए। ऐसे स्थान पर जहां आग लगी हो, जहां मिलन हो रहा हो, या कभी करवट लेकर नहीं सोना चाहिए।

न नग्नः कर्हिचित्स्नायान्न निशायां कदाचन स्नात्वा च नावमृज्येत गात्राणि सुविचक्षणः

Never bathe naked, nor at night. Having bathed, one should not wipe the body with a cloth.

कभी भी नंगा होकर न नहाएं, न ही रात को। स्नान करने के बाद शरीर को कपड़े से नहीं पोंछना चाहिए।

न चानुलिम्पेदस्नात्वा स्नात्वा वासो न निर्धुनेत् आर्द्र एव तु वासांसि नित्यं सेवेत मानवः स्रजश्च नावकर्षेत न बहिर्धारयेत च

One should not anoint oneself after bathing. After bathing, one should not shake one's clothes. A man should always wear wet clothes. One should not pull out garlands, nor wear

स्नान के बाद अभिषेक नहीं करना चाहिए। नहाने के बाद अपने कपड़े नहीं हिलाने चाहिए। मनुष्य को हमेशा गीले कपड़े ही पहनने चाहिए। माला को न तो उखाड़ना चाहिए और न ही पहनना चाहिए

रक्तमाल्यं न धार्यं स्याच्छुक्लं धार्यं तु पण्डितैः वर्जयित्वा तु कमलं तथा कुवलयं विभो

The wise should not wear red garlands, but should wear white ones. Excepting the lotus and the blue lotus, O Lord.

बुद्धिमान लोगों को लाल माला नहीं, बल्कि सफेद माला पहननी चाहिए। हे भगवान, कमल और नीले कमल को छोड़कर।

रक्तं शिरसि धार्यं तु तथा वानेयमित्यपि काञ्चनी चैव या माला न सा दुष्यति कर्हिचित् स्नातस्य वर्णकं नित्यमार्द्रं दद्याद्विशां पते

मस्तक पर लाल रंग का तथा मृगचर्म से बना हुआ वस्त्र धारण करना चाहिए। और जो सोने की माला है, वह कभी अपवित्र नहीं होती। जिसने स्नान कर लिया हो

विपर्ययं न कुर्वीत वाससो बुद्धिमान्नरः तथा नान्यधृतं धार्यं न चापदशमेव च

The wise man should not wear the clothes of another, nor those worn by a woman, nor those worn by a dead person, nor those worn by a leper, nor those worn by a thief

बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को न तो दूसरे के वस्त्र पहनने चाहिए, न किसी स्त्री के पहने हुए, न किसी मृत व्यक्ति के पहने हुए, न कोढ़ी के पहने हुए, न चोर के।

अन्यदेव भवेद्वासः शयनीये नरोत्तम अन्यद्रथ्यासु देवानामर्चायामन्यदेव हि

The garment is one thing, the bed is another, O best of men. The worship of the gods is one thing, the worship of the gods is another.

हे पुरूषश्रेष्ठ, वस्त्र एक चीज है, बिस्तर एक और चीज है। देवताओं की पूजा एक बात है, देवताओं की पूजा दूसरी बात है।

प्रियङ्गुचन्दनाभ्यां च बिल्वेन तगरेण च पृथगेवानुलिम्पेत केसरेण च बुद्धिमान्

With priyangu and sandalwood, with bilva and with sugar, The wise one should anoint separately with kesara.

प्रियंगु और चंदन से, बिल्व से और शर्करा से, बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को केसर से अलग से अभिषेक करना चाहिए।

उपवासं च कुर्वीत स्नातः शुचिरलंकृतः पर्वकालेषु सर्वेषु ब्रह्मचारी सदा भवेत्

He should observe fast, be clean and adorned. He should always be celibate during all the festive seasons.

उसे व्रत करना चाहिए, स्वच्छ रहना चाहिए और श्रृंगार करना चाहिए। उसे सभी त्योहारों के दौरान हमेशा ब्रह्मचारी रहना चाहिए।

नालीढया परिहतं भक्षयीत कदाचन तथा नोद्धृतसाराणि प्रेक्षतां नाप्रदाय च

न संनिकृष्टो मेधावी नाशुचिर्न च सत्सु च प्रतिषिद्धान्न धर्मेषु भक्षान्भुञ्जीत पृष्ठतः

नमक कभी भी अपने हाथ से नहीं खाना चाहिए और ना ही रात के समय। दही और जौ नहीं खाना चाहिए तथा अकारण मांस से भी परहेज करना चाहिए।

वालेन तु न भुञ्जीत परश्राद्धं तथैव च सायं प्रातश्च भुञ्जीत नान्तराले समाहितः

One should not eat at the śrāddha of another, nor at night. One should eat in the evening and morning, not in between, with a composed mind.

किसी दूसरे के श्राद्ध में या रात्रि में भोजन नहीं करना चाहिए। व्यक्ति को शांत मन से शाम और सुबह भोजन करना चाहिए, बीच में नहीं।

वाग्यतो नैकवस्त्रश्च नासंविष्टः कदाचन भूमौ सदैव नाश्नीयान्नानासीनो न शब्दवत्

Never with a single garment, never without restraint of speech, never without sitting down, never with noise. Never on the ground, never with different people, never with the feet uncovered.

कभी एक वस्त्र के साथ नहीं, कभी वाणी पर संयम के बिना नहीं, कभी बिना बैठे हुए नहीं, कभी शोर के बिना नहीं। कभी ज़मीन पर नहीं, कभी अलग-अलग लोगों के साथ नहीं, कभी खुले पैर नहीं।

तोयपूर्वं प्रदायान्नमतिथिभ्यो विशां पते पश्चाद्भुञ्जीत मेधावी न चाप्यन्यमना नरः

Having first given water, O Lord of the Earth, to the guests, the wise one should eat afterwards, not with a distracted mind.

हे पृथ्वीदेव, अतिथियों को पहले जल पिलाकर बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को बाद में भोजन करना चाहिए, विचलित मन से नहीं।

समानमेकपङ्क्त्यां तु भोज्यमन्नं नरेश्वर विषं हालाहलं भुङ्क्ते योऽप्रदाय सुहृज्जने

O Lord of men, if one eats the same food as another in the same row, he eats the poison halahala who does not give to his friends.

हे मनुष्यों के भगवान, यदि कोई एक ही पंक्ति में दूसरे के समान भोजन खाता है, तो वह हलाहल जहर खाता है जो अपने दोस्तों को नहीं देता है।

पानीयं पायसं सर्पिर्दधिसक्तुमधून्यपि निरस्य शेषमेतेषां न प्रदेयं तु कस्यचित्

Water, rice-gruel, clarified butter, curds, parched grain, and honey, Having rejected these, the remainder of these should not be given to anyone.

जल, चावल का दलिया, घृत, दही, भूना हुआ अन्न और शहद, इन्हें त्यागकर शेष किसी को नहीं देना चाहिए।

भुञ्जानो मनुजव्याघ्र नैव शङ्कां समाचरेत् दधि चाप्यनुपानं वै न कर्तव्यं भवार्थिना

One should not be suspicious while eating, O tiger among men. One who desires to be should not drink curd as a beverage.

भोजन करते समय किसी को संदेह नहीं करना चाहिए, हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! जिसकी इच्छा हो उसे पेय पदार्थ के रूप में दही नहीं पीना चाहिए।

आचम्य चैव हस्तेन परिस्राव्य तथोदकम् अङ्गुष्ठं चरणस्याथ दक्षिणस्यावसेचयेत्

Having sipped water and washed the hands, and having poured out the water, one should sprinkle the big toe of the right foot.

पानी पीकर, हाथ धोकर, पानी निकालकर दाहिने पैर के अंगूठे पर छिड़कना चाहिए।

पाणिं मूर्ध्नि समाधाय स्पृष्ट्वा चाग्निं समाहितः ज्ञातिश्रैष्ठ्यमवाप्नोति प्रयोगकुशलो नरः

Placing his hand on his head, touching the fire with concentration, A man skilled in practice attains the best of relatives.

सिर पर हाथ रखकर, ध्यानपूर्वक अग्नि का स्पर्श करते हुए, अभ्यास में कुशल व्यक्ति उत्तम रिश्तेदारों को प्राप्त करता है।

अद्भिः प्राणान्समालभ्य नाभिं पाणितलेन च स्पृशंश्चैव प्रतिष्ठेत न चाप्यार्द्रेण पाणिना

Having touched the vital airs with water, and the navel with the palm of the hand, and having touched the ground, one should not touch with wet hands.

प्राणवायु को जल से और नाभि को हथेली से स्पर्श करके तथा भूमि को स्पर्श करके गीले हाथों से स्पर्श नहीं करना चाहिए।

अङ्गुष्ठस्यान्तराले च ब्राह्मं तीर्थमुदाहृतम् कनिष्ठिकायाः पश्चात्तु देवतीर्थमिहोच्यते

The space between the thumb and the forefinger is said to be the Brahmatīrtha. The place behind the little finger is said to be the Devatīrtha.

अंगूठे और तर्जनी के बीच का स्थान ब्रह्मतीर्थ कहा गया है। छोटी उंगली के पीछे का स्थान देवतीर्थ कहा गया है।

अङ्गुष्ठस्य च यन्मध्यं प्रदेशिन्याश्च भारत तेन पित्र्याणि कुर्वीत स्पृष्ट्वापो न्यायतस्तथा

The middle of the thumb and the forefinger, O descendant of Bharata, By touching water in that way, one should perform the rites for the ancestors.

हे भरत के वंशज, अंगूठे और तर्जनी के मध्य भाग को छूकर जल का स्पर्श करके पितरों का श्राद्ध करना चाहिए।

परापवादं न ब्रूयान्नाप्रियं च कदाचन न मन्युः कश्चिदुत्पाद्यः पुरुषेण भवार्थिना

One should not speak of the faults of others, nor of anything unpleasant. One who desires to be should not arouse any anger.

दूसरों के दोष या कोई अप्रिय बात नहीं बोलनी चाहिए। जो बनना चाहता है उसे क्रोध नहीं करना चाहिए।

पतितैस्तु कथां नेच्छेद्दर्शनं चापि वर्जयेत् संसर्गं च न गच्छेत तथायुर्विन्दते महत्

He should not desire to hear the story of those who have fallen, nor should he avoid seeing them. He should not associate with them. Thus he attains great longevity.

उसे गिरे हुए लोगों की कहानी सुनने की इच्छा नहीं करनी चाहिए, न ही उन्हें देखने से बचना चाहिए। उन्हें उनसे मेलजोल नहीं रखना चाहिए. इस प्रकार वह महान दीर्घायु प्राप्त करता है।

न दिवा मैथुनं गच्छेन्न कन्यां न च बन्धकीम् न चास्नातां स्त्रियं गच्छेत्तथायुर्विन्दते महत्

Do not have sexual intercourse during the day, not with a virgin, not with a slave girl, not with a woman who has not bathed. Thus one attains great longevity.

दिन के समय संभोग न करना, न कुंवारी से, न दासी से, न स्नान न करनेवाली स्त्री से। इस प्रकार व्यक्ति को महान दीर्घायु प्राप्त होती है।

स्वे स्वे तीर्थे समाचम्य कार्ये समुपकल्पिते त्रिः पीत्वापो द्विः प्रमृज्य कृतशौचो भवेन्नरः

Having sipped water at their respective sacred places, and having performed the rites prescribed for them, Having drunk water three times and wiped twice, a man becomes pure.

अपने-अपने पवित्र स्थानों पर जल पीकर, उनके लिए निर्धारित अनुष्ठान करके, तीन बार पानी पीकर और दो बार पोंछकर, मनुष्य पवित्र हो जाता है।

इन्द्रियाणि सकृत्स्पृश्य त्रिरभ्युक्ष्य च मानवः कुर्वीत पित्र्यं दैवं च वेददृष्टेन कर्मणा

Having touched the senses once and having sprinkled three times, a man should perform the rites for the ancestors and the gods according to the rites prescribed in the Vedas.

मनुष्य को एक बार इंद्रियों का स्पर्श करके और तीन बार छिड़ककर वेदों में बताई गई विधि के अनुसार पितरों और देवताओं का तर्पण करना चाहिए।

ब्राह्मणार्थे च यच्छौचं तच्च मे शृणु कौरव प्रवृत्तं च हितं चोक्त्वा भोजनाद्यन्तयोस्तथा

हे राजन, मनुष्य को संध्या के समय सोना नहीं चाहिए और न ही ज्ञान का अभ्यास करना चाहिए। बुद्धिमान को भोजन नहीं करना चाहिए। इस प्रकार व्यक्ति को महान दीर्घायु प्राप्त होती है।

नक्तं न कुर्यात्पित्र्याणि भुक्त्वा चैव प्रसाधनम् पानीयस्य क्रिया नक्तं न कार्या भूतिमिच्छता

One should not perform the rites for the ancestors at night, nor should one perform self-adornment after eating. One who desires prosperity should not perform the rites for water at night.

रात्रि के समय पितरों के निमित्त श्राद्ध कर्म नहीं करना चाहिए और न ही भोजन के बाद स्वयं श्रृंगार करना चाहिए। समृद्धि की इच्छा रखने वाले को रात्रि में जल का अनुष्ठान नहीं करना चाहिए।

वर्जनीयाश्च वै नित्यं सक्तवो निशि भारत शेषाणि चावदातानि पानीयं चैव भोजने

अपस्मारिकुले जातां निहीनां चैव वर्जयेत् श्वित्रिणां च कुले जातां त्रयाणां मनुजेश्वर

संध्यां न भुञ्जेन्न स्नायान्न पुरीषं समुत्सृजेत् प्रयतश्च भवेत्तस्यां न च किंचित्समाचरेत्

One should not eat, bathe, or defecate at dusk. One should be restrained and not do anything at that time.

शाम के समय भोजन, स्नान या शौच नहीं करना चाहिए। उस समय संयमित रहना चाहिए और कुछ भी नहीं करना चाहिए।

ब्राह्मणान्पूजयेच्चापि तथा स्नात्वा नराधिप देवांश्च प्रणमेत्स्नातो गुरूंश्चाप्यभिवादयेत्

अनिमन्त्रितो न गच्छेत यज्ञं गच्छेत्तु दर्शकः अनिमन्त्रिते ह्यनायुष्यं गमनं तत्र भारत

बिना बुलाए यज्ञ में नहीं जाना चाहिए। इसे देखने जरूर जाना चाहिए. क्योंकि बिना बुलाए वहां जाना अशुभ है, हे भरत के वंशज!

न चैकेन परिव्राज्यं न गन्तव्यं तथा निशि अनागतायां संध्यायां पश्चिमायां गृहे वसेत्

और यात्रा पर अकेले नहीं जाना चाहिए और न ही रात के समय। शाम का धुंधलका होने तक घर में ही रहना चाहिए।

एष ते लक्षणोद्देश आयुष्याणां प्रकीर्तितः शेषस्त्रैविद्यवृद्धेभ्यः प्रत्याहार्यो युधिष्ठिर

क्योंकि सभी धर्मग्रन्थ यही कहते हैं कि आचरण ही सर्वोत्तम है। आचरण से धर्म उत्पन्न होता है और धर्म से जीवन की वृद्धि होती है।

एतद्यशस्यमायुष्यं स्वर्ग्यं स्वस्त्ययनं महत् अनुकम्पता सर्ववर्णान्ब्रह्मणा समुदाहृतम्
