युधिष्ठिर उवाच साम्ना वापि प्रदाने वा ज्यायः किं भवतो मतम् प्रब्रूहि भरतश्रेष्ठ यदत्र व्यतिरिच्यते

Yudhi Shthira said: What do you think is better, conciliation or giving? Tell me, best of the Bharatas, what is superior in this.

युधि स्थिर ने कहा: आपके विचार में क्या बेहतर है, सुलह करना या देना? हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, मुझे बताओ कि इसमें श्रेष्ठ क्या है?

भीष्म उवाच साम्ना प्रसाद्यते कश्चिद्दानेन च तथापरः पुरुषः प्रकृतिं ज्ञात्वा तयोरेकतरं भजेत्

Bhishma said: Some are pleased by conciliation, others by gifts. Knowing the nature of a person, one should resort to either of these.

भीष्म ने कहा: कुछ लोग मेल-मिलाप से प्रसन्न होते हैं, कुछ उपहारों से। व्यक्ति के स्वभाव को जानकर इनमें से किसी एक का सहारा लेना चाहिए।

गुणांस्तु शृणु मे राजन्सान्त्वस्य भरतर्षभ दारुणान्यपि भूतानि सान्त्वेनाराधयेद्यथा

Listen to me, O king, about the qualities of conciliation, O bull among the Bharatas. Even fierce beings can be propitiated by conciliation.

हे राजन, हे भरतवंशियों में मेल-मिलाप के गुणों के विषय में मेरी बात सुनो। उग्र प्राणियों को भी सुलह द्वारा संतुष्ट किया जा सकता है।

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् गृहीत्वा रक्षसा मुक्तो द्विजातिः कानने यथा

Here I relate an ancient story. A brahmin was released by a demon after being seized in a forest.

यहाँ मैं एक प्राचीन कथा सुनाता हूँ। एक ब्राह्मण को एक राक्षस ने जंगल में पकड़ लेने के बाद छोड़ दिया था।

कश्चित्तु बुद्धिसंपन्नो ब्राह्मणो विजने वने गृहीतः कृच्छ्रमापन्नो रक्षसा भक्षयिष्यता

But a certain wise Brāhman, who was in a lonely forest, was seized by a demon who was about to devour him.

लेकिन एक बुद्धिमान ब्राह्मण, जो एक सुनसान जंगल में था, को एक राक्षस ने पकड़ लिया जो उसे निगलने ही वाला था।

स बुद्धिश्रुतसंपन्नस्तं दृष्ट्वातीव भीषणम् सामैवास्मिन्प्रयुयुजे न मुमोह न विव्यथे

He, endowed with wisdom and learning, seeing that extremely terrifying one, Applied non-violence to him. He was not deluded, nor distressed.

ज्ञान और विद्या से सम्पन्न उन्होंने उस अत्यंत भयानक को देखकर उस पर अहिंसा का प्रयोग किया। वह न तो भ्रमित था, न ही व्यथित था।

रक्षस्तु वाचा संपूज्य प्रश्नं पप्रच्छ तं द्विजम् मोक्ष्यसे ब्रूहि मे प्रश्नं केनास्मि हरिणः कृशः

The demon Rākshasa, having worshipped the sage with words, asked the brāhman the following question: "Be released, tell me the question. By whom am I made thin,

राक्षस राक्षस ने शब्दों से ऋषि की पूजा करके, ब्राह्मण से निम्नलिखित प्रश्न पूछा: "मुक्त हो जाओ, मुझे प्रश्न बताओ। मैं किसके द्वारा पतला किया गया हूं?"

मुहूर्तमथ संचिन्त्य ब्राह्मणस्तस्य रक्षसः आभिर्गाथाभिरव्यग्रः प्रश्नं प्रतिजगाद ह

The brahmin, having reflected for a moment, answered the question with these verses, without hesitation:

ब्राह्मण ने एक पल के लिए विचार करने के बाद, बिना किसी हिचकिचाहट के, इन श्लोकों के साथ प्रश्न का उत्तर दिया:

विदेशस्थो विलोकस्थो विना नूनं सुहृज्जनैः विषयानतुलान्भुङ्क्षे तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are certainly without friends, living in a foreign land, looking at the sky. You enjoy pleasures that are unequal, therefore you are thin like a deer.

आप निश्चित रूप से मित्रों के बिना हैं, एक विदेशी भूमि में रह रहे हैं, आकाश की ओर देख रहे हैं। आप असमान सुखों का आनंद लेते हैं, इसलिए आप हिरण की तरह पतले हैं।

नूनं मित्राणि ते रक्षः साधूपचरितान्यपि स्वदोषादपरज्यन्ते तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Surely, your friends, the deer, who have always behaved well, are being killed because of your own fault. Therefore, you are thin.

निश्चय ही तुम्हारे मित्र हिरण, जिन्होंने सदैव अच्छा व्यवहार किया है, तुम्हारी ही गलती के कारण मारे जा रहे हैं। इसलिए आप पतले हैं.

धनैश्वर्याधिकाः स्तब्धास्त्वद्गुणैः परमावराः अवजानन्ति नूनं त्वां तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Those who are rich and powerful are arrogant, and those who are poor are inferior in your qualities. They certainly despise you, and so you are thin like a deer.

जो अमीर और शक्तिशाली हैं वे अहंकारी हैं, और जो गरीब हैं वे आपके गुणों में हीन हैं। वे निश्चय ही तुझ से घृणा करते हैं, इसलिये तू हिरन के समान दुबला हो गया है।

गुणवान्विगुणानन्यान्नूनं पश्यसि सत्कृतान् प्राज्ञोऽप्राज्ञान्विनीतात्मा तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You see the virtuous and the virtuous as well as the virtuous as well as the virtuous as well as the virtuous as well as the virtuous as well as the virtuous as well as the virtuous as well as

आप गुणवान और गुणी को भी देखते हैं, गुणवान को भी, गुणवान को भी, गुणवान को भी, गुणवान को भी, गुणवान को भी, गुणवान को भी, गुणवान को भी, गुणवान को भी देखते हैं।

अवृत्त्या क्लिश्यमानोऽपि वृत्त्युपायान्विगर्हयन् माहात्म्याद्व्यथसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Even though you are tormented by lack of livelihood, you reject the means of livelihood. By your greatness, you are not distressed. Therefore, you are a deer, emaciated.

भले ही आप आजीविका के अभाव से पीड़ित हों, फिर भी आप आजीविका के साधनों को अस्वीकार कर देते हैं। आपकी महानता से आप व्यथित नहीं हैं। अत: तुम कृशकाय हिरण हो।

संपीड्यात्मानमार्यत्वात्त्वया कश्चिदुपस्कृतः जितं त्वां मन्यते साधो तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You have been oppressed by yourself, but out of nobility you have helped someone. The good man thinks that he has conquered you, and so you are thin like a deer.

तुम पर स्वयं ही अत्याचार हुआ है, परन्तु तुमने बड़प्पन के कारण किसी की सहायता की है। अच्छा आदमी सोचता है कि उसने तुम्हें जीत लिया है, और इसलिए तुम हिरण की तरह पतले हो गए हो।

क्लिश्यमानान्विमार्गेषु कामक्रोधावृतात्मनः मन्ये नु ध्यायसि जनांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Those who are afflicted by the fetters of passion and anger, who are covered by passion and anger, who are bound by the fetters of passion and anger, who are afflicted by the fetters

जो काम और क्रोध की बेड़ियों से पीड़ित हैं, जो काम और क्रोध से ढके हुए हैं, जो काम और क्रोध की बेड़ियों से बंधे हैं, जो बेड़ियों से पीड़ित हैं

प्राज्ञैः संभावितो नूनं नप्राज्ञैरुपसंहितः ह्रीमानमर्षी दुर्वृत्तैस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are certainly honoured by the wise, but not associated with the unwise. You are modest, intolerant of evil conduct. Therefore, you are thin like a deer.

आप निश्चित रूप से बुद्धिमानों द्वारा सम्मानित हैं, लेकिन मूर्खों के साथ संबद्ध नहीं हैं। आप विनम्र हैं, बुरे आचरण के प्रति असहिष्णु हैं। अत: तुम हिरण के समान दुबले-पतले हो।

नूनं मित्रमुखः शत्रुः कश्चिदार्यवदाचरन् वञ्चयित्वा गतस्त्वां वै तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Surely, some enemy, disguised as a friend, acting like a noble one, having deceived you, has gone away. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.

निश्चय ही कोई शत्रु मित्र का भेष धारण कर, सज्जन का अभिनय करके तुम्हें धोखा देकर चला गया है। अत: तुम हिरण के समान क्षीण हो गये हो।

प्रकाशार्थगतिर्नूनं रहस्यकुशलः कृती तज्ज्ञैर्न पूज्यसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are certainly skilled in the art of secrecy, for you have attained the goal of light. You are certainly not worshipped by those who know, and so you are thin like a deer.

आप निश्चित रूप से गोपनीयता की कला में कुशल हैं, क्योंकि आपने प्रकाश का लक्ष्य प्राप्त कर लिया है। जो लोग जानते हैं, वे निश्चित रूप से आपकी पूजा नहीं करते हैं, और इसलिए आप हिरण की तरह पतले हैं।

असत्स्वभिनिविष्टेषु ब्रुवतो मुक्तसंशयम् गुणास्ते न विराजन्ते तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

When one is attached to what is unreal, and speaks with no doubt, your virtues do not shine forth. Therefore you are thin like a deer.

जब कोई असत्य से जुड़ा होता है और निःसंदेह बोलता है, तो आपके गुण प्रकट नहीं होते हैं। अत: तुम हिरण के समान दुबले-पतले हो।

धनबुद्धिश्रुतैर्हीनः केवलं तेजसान्वितः महत्प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are devoid of wealth, knowledge, and learning, but are endowed with mere brilliance. You are certainly seeking greatness, and therefore you are thin like a deer.

आप धन, ज्ञान और विद्या से रहित हैं, परंतु केवल तेज से संपन्न हैं। आप निश्चित रूप से महानता की तलाश में हैं, और इसलिए आप हिरण की तरह पतले हैं।

तपःप्रणिहितात्मानं मन्ये त्वारण्यकाङ्क्षिणम् बन्धुवर्गो न गृह्णाति तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

I think you are intent on asceticism and desire to dwell in the forest, because your family does not accept you, you are emaciated like a deer.

मुझे लगता है कि आप तपस्या पर आमादा हैं और वन में निवास करने की इच्छा रखते हैं, क्योंकि आपके परिवार वाले आपको स्वीकार नहीं करते हैं, आप हिरण की तरह क्षीण हो गए हैं।

नूनमर्थवतां मध्ये तव वाक्यमनुत्तमम् न भाति कालेऽभिहितं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Among those who speak with meaning, your words are certainly the best. But when spoken at the wrong time, they do not shine. Therefore, you are thin like a deer.

अर्थपूर्ण बातें कहने वालों में आपकी वाणी निश्चय ही सर्वोत्तम है। लेकिन गलत समय पर बोलने पर उनमें चमक नहीं आती। अत: तुम हिरण के समान दुबले-पतले हो।

दृढपूर्वश्रुतं मूर्खं कुपितं हृदयप्रियम् अनुनेतुं न शक्नोषि तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are unable to appease the angry fool who has heard much before, who is dear to the heart. Therefore you are thin, like a deer.

तुम उस क्रोधी मूर्ख को, जो बहुत पहले सुन चुका है, जो हृदय को प्रिय है, प्रसन्न करने में असमर्थ हो। इसलिये तुम हिरण के समान दुबले-पतले हो।

नूनमासंजयित्वा ते कृत्ये कस्मिंश्चिदीप्सिते कश्चिदर्थयतेऽत्यर्थं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

"Surely, you are not satisfied with some task you desire to accomplish, " "For someone is asking for something from you, and because of that you are emaciated, like a

"निश्चय ही, जो काम आप पूरा करना चाहते हैं, उससे आप संतुष्ट नहीं हैं," "क्योंकि कोई आपसे कुछ माँग रहा है, और उसके कारण आप क्षीण हो गए हैं, जैसे

नूनं त्वा स्वगुणापेक्षं पूजयानं सुहृद्ध्रुवम् मयार्थ इति जानाति तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Surely, he who is your friend, who is certain, who worships you in expectation of your good qualities, knows that you are for his own good. Therefore, you are thin like a

निश्चय ही, जो आपका मित्र है, जो निश्चिंत है, जो आपके अच्छे गुणों की आशा से आपकी पूजा करता है, वह जानता है कि आप उसकी ही भलाई के लिए हैं। इसलिए, आप एक की तरह पतले हैं

अन्तर्गतमभिप्रायं न नूनं लज्जयेच्छसि विवक्तुं प्राप्तिशैथिल्यात्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are not ashamed to have your intention known, because you are thin, being a deer, due to the laxity of your pursuit.

तुम्हें अपना अभिप्राय ज्ञात होने में शर्म नहीं आती, क्योंकि तुम हिरण होकर भी दुबले-पतले हो, अपने लक्ष्य में ढिलाई के कारण।

नानाबुद्धिरुचीँल्लोके मनुष्यान्नूनमिच्छसि ग्रहीतुं स्वगुणैः सर्वांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are thin because you want to grasp all beings in the world with your various ideas and desires. You want to grasp all beings with your own qualities.

आप दुबले-पतले हैं क्योंकि आप दुनिया के सभी प्राणियों को अपने विभिन्न विचारों और इच्छाओं से वश में करना चाहते हैं। आप सभी प्राणियों को अपने गुणों से वश में करना चाहते हैं।

अविद्वान्भीरुरल्पार्थो विद्याविक्रमदानजम् यशः प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are timid, of little means, and ignorant, and you seek fame, which comes from learning, valor, and generosity. You are surely seeking fame, and so you are thin and timid

तुम डरपोक, साधनहीन और अज्ञानी हो, और प्रसिद्धि चाहते हो, जो विद्या, वीरता और उदारता से मिलती है। आप निश्चित रूप से प्रसिद्धि की तलाश में हैं, और इसलिए आप दुबले-पतले और डरपोक हैं

चिराभिलषितं किंचित्फलमप्राप्तमेव ते कृतमन्यैरपहृतं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You have not obtained the fruit that you have desired for a long time. It has been taken away by others. Therefore, you are thin and a deer.

आपको वह फल नहीं मिला जो आप बहुत समय से चाहते थे। इसे दूसरों ने छीन लिया है. अत: तुम दुबले-पतले और हिरण हो।

नूनमात्मकृतं दोषमपश्यन्किंचिदात्मनि अकारणेऽभिशस्तोऽसि तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Not seeing any fault of his own, he said to himself, "You are being blamed without reason, therefore you are a deer, thin.

अपना कोई दोष न देखकर उसने मन ही मन कहा, “तुम पर अकारण दोष लगाया जा रहा है, इसलिये तुम हिरण हो, दुबले-पतले हो।

सुहृदामप्रमत्तानामप्रमोक्ष्यार्थहानिजम् दुःखमर्थगुणैर्हीनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

For the sake of your friends, you are not careless, and you do not let go of the loss of wealth. You are thin, O deer, because of the loss of the

अपने दोस्तों की खातिर आप लापरवाह नहीं होते और धन की हानि नहीं होने देते। हे मृग, तू हानि के कारण दुबला हो गया है

साधून्गृहस्थान्दृष्ट्वा च तथासाधून्वनेचरान् मुक्तांश्चावसथे सक्तांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Seeing the good householders and the bad forest-dwellers, and the liberated ones attached to their homes, you are thin, O deer.

अच्छे गृहस्थों और बुरे वनवासियों तथा घर में आसक्त मुक्त लोगों को देखकर, हे मृग, तुम दुबले हो गए हो।

धर्म्यमर्थं च काले च देशे चाभिहितं वचः न प्रतिष्ठति ते नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

The words that are spoken at the right time, in the right place, and are in accordance with Dharma, do not take effect for you. Therefore, you are thin and deer-like.

जो शब्द सही समय पर, सही स्थान पर और धर्म के अनुरूप कहे जाते हैं, उनका आप पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता। अत: आप दुबले-पतले और हिरण के समान हैं।

दत्तानकुशलैरर्थान्मनीषी संजिजीविषुः प्राप्य वर्तयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

One who is wise and wishes to live, should not give away wealth to the unrighteous. Having obtained it, you are now living on it. Therefore, you are thin like a deer.

जो बुद्धिमान है और जीवित रहना चाहता है, उसे अधर्मी को धन नहीं देना चाहिए। इसे प्राप्त करके अब आप इस पर जीवन व्यतीत कर रहे हैं। अत: तुम हिरण के समान दुबले-पतले हो।

पापान्विवर्धतो दृष्ट्वा कल्याणांश्चावसीदतः ध्रुवं मृगयसे योग्यं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Seeing that sin increases and virtue declines, you are searching for something certain. Therefore you are thin, like a deer.

यह देखकर कि पाप बढ़ता है और पुण्य घटता है, तुम कुछ निश्चित खोज रहे हो। इसलिये तुम हिरण के समान दुबले-पतले हो।

परस्परविरुद्धानां प्रियं नूनं चिकीर्षसि सुहृदामविरोधेन तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

You are seeking to please those who are mutually opposed. You are thin, O deer, because of not opposing your friends.

आप उन लोगों को खुश करना चाह रहे हैं जो परस्पर विरोधी हैं। हे हिरण, तुम अपने मित्रों का विरोध न करने के कारण ही दुबले हो।

श्रोत्रियांश्च विकर्मस्थान्प्राज्ञांश्चाप्यजितेन्द्रियान् मन्येऽनुध्यायसि जनांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः

Those who are in the wrong profession, the wise but with uncontrolled senses, You think of them as worthy of respect. Therefore you are thin like a deer.

जो लोग गलत पेशे में हैं, बुद्धिमान हैं लेकिन अनियंत्रित इंद्रियों वाले हैं, आप उन्हें सम्मान के योग्य समझते हैं। अत: तुम हिरण के समान दुबले-पतले हो।

एवं संपूजितं रक्षो विप्रं तं प्रत्यपूजयत् सखायमकरोच्चैनं संयोज्यार्थैर्मुमोच ह

The demon, thus worshipped, worshipped the brahmin in return. He made him a friend, united him with wealth, and set him free.

इस प्रकार पूजित राक्षस ने बदले में ब्राह्मण की पूजा की। उसने उसे मित्र बनाया, धन से जोड़ा और मुक्त कर दिया।
