युधिष्ठिर उवाच श्रुतं मे भवतो वाक्यमन्नदानस्य यो विधिः नक्षत्रयोगस्येदानीं दानकल्पं ब्रवीहि मे

Yudhiṣṭhira said: I have heard from you the rules for giving food. Now tell me the rules for giving according to the conjunction of the stars.

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: मैंने आपसे भोजन देने का नियम सुना है। अब नक्षत्रों की युति के अनुसार दान देने का नियम बताइये।

भीष्म उवाच अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् देवक्याश्चैव संवादं देवर्षेर्नारदस्य च

Bhishma said: Here, I will relate an ancient story, The conversation between Devaki and the celestial sage Narada.

भीष्म ने कहा: यहां, मैं एक प्राचीन कहानी सुनाऊंगा, देवकी और दिव्य ऋषि नारद के बीच की बातचीत।

द्वारकामनुसंप्राप्तं नारदं देवदर्शनम् पप्रच्छैनं ततः प्रश्नं देवकी धर्मदर्शिनी

Having arrived at Dvārakā, Nārada, the seer of the gods, Devakī, the seer of dharma, then asked him a question:

द्वारका पहुंचने पर, देवताओं के द्रष्टा नारद, धर्म की द्रष्टा देवकी ने उनसे एक प्रश्न पूछा:

तस्याः संपृच्छमानाया देवर्षिर्नारदस्तदा आचष्ट विधिवत्सर्वं यत्तच्छृणु विशां पते

When she asked him, the celestial sage Nārada then told her everything in detail. Listen to it, O lord of the people.

जब उसने उससे पूछा, तब दिव्य ऋषि नारद ने उसे सब कुछ विस्तार से बताया। हे प्रजा के स्वामी, इसे सुनो।

नारद उवाच कृत्तिकासु महाभागे पायसेन ससर्पिषा संतर्प्य ब्राह्मणान्साधूँल्लोकानाप्नोत्यनुत्तमान्

Nārada said: O blessed one, by offering milk pudding with ghee to good brahmins on the Kṛttikā constellation, one attains the supreme worlds.

नारद ने कहा: हे धन्य! कृत्तिका नक्षत्र में अच्छे ब्राह्मणों को घी के साथ खीर देने से मनुष्य को उत्तम लोक की प्राप्ति होती है।

रोहिण्यां प्रथितैर्मांसैर्माषैरन्नेन सर्पिषा पयोऽनुपानं दातव्यमानृण्यार्थं द्विजातये

With meat, pulse, rice, and ghee, well-known to Rohini, The Brāhmaṇa should be given milk as a drink for the sake of freedom from debt.

कर्ज से मुक्ति के लिए रोहिणी को ज्ञात मांस, दाल, चावल और घी के साथ ब्राह्मण को पेय के रूप में दूध देना चाहिए।

दोग्ध्रीं दत्त्वा सवत्सां तु नक्षत्रे सोमदैवते गच्छन्ति मानुषाल्लोकात्स्वर्गलोकमनुत्तमम्

Having given a cow with a calf, on a lunar day dedicated to Soma, one goes from the world of humans to the supreme world of heaven.

सोम को समर्पित चन्द्र दिवस पर बछड़े सहित गाय का दान करने से मनुष्य मनुष्य लोक से स्वर्ग के सर्वोच्च लोक में चला जाता है।

आर्द्रायां कृसरं दत्त्वा तैलमिश्रमुपोषितः नरस्तरति दुर्गाणि क्षुरधारांश्च पर्वतान्

Having fasted and given rice cooked in milk mixed with oil on the asterism of Ardra, a man crosses over difficult places and mountains with razor-sharp edges.

आर्द्रा नक्षत्र में व्रत रखकर तेल मिले दूध में चावल पकाकर दान करने से मनुष्य दुर्गम स्थानों और तेज धार वाले पर्वतों को पार कर जाता है।

अपूपान्पुनर्वसौ दत्त्वा तथैवान्नानि शोभने यशस्वी रूपसंपन्नो बह्वन्ने जायते कुले

Having given cakes in the month of Vasa and food in the month of Śobhana, One is born in a family with plenty of food, endowed with fame and beauty.

वासा के महीने में केक और शोभन के महीने में भोजन देने से, व्यक्ति बहुत सारे भोजन वाले, प्रसिद्धि और सुंदरता से संपन्न परिवार में पैदा होता है।

पुष्ये तु कनकं दत्त्वा कृतं चाकृतमेव च अनालोकेषु लोकेषु सोमवत्स विराजते

Having given gold in the Puṣya constellation, and having done what was not done, he shines like the moon in the world of darkness.

पुष्य नक्षत्र में सोना दान करने और न करने योग्य कार्य करने से वह अंधकार लोक में चंद्रमा के समान चमकता है।

आश्लेषायां तु यो रूप्यमृषभं वा प्रयच्छति स सर्वभयनिर्मुक्तः शात्रवानधितिष्ठति

One who gives silver or a bull in the constellation of Ashlesha is freed from all fear and subdues enemies.

जो व्यक्ति आश्लेषा नक्षत्र में चांदी या बैल दान करता है, वह सभी भय से मुक्त हो जाता है और शत्रुओं को वश में कर लेता है।

मघासु तिलपूर्णानि वर्धमानानि मानवः प्रदाय पुत्रपशुमानिह प्रेत्य च मोदते

One who gives away sesame seeds in the Maghā constellation, which increase in number, becomes endowed with sons and cattle in this world and rejoices in the next.

जो मघा नक्षत्र में तिलों का दान करता है, उसकी संख्या बढ़ती है, वह इस लोक में पुत्रों और पशुओं से युक्त होता है और परलोक में सुख भोगता है।

फल्गुनीपूर्वसमये ब्राह्मणानामुपोषितः भक्षान्फाणितसंयुक्तान्दत्त्वा सौभाग्यमृच्छति

At the time of Phalguni, having fasted, giving food mixed with molasses, one attains good fortune.

फाल्गुनी तिथि में व्रत रखकर गुड़ मिश्रित भोजन देने से सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति होती है।

घृतक्षीरसमायुक्तं विधिवत्षष्टिकौदनम् उत्तराविषये दत्त्वा स्वर्गलोके महीयते

Having offered rice cooked in ghee and milk, in accordance with the prescribed method, in the northern direction, one attains greatness in the heavenly world.

घी और दूध में पके हुए चावल विधिपूर्वक उत्तर दिशा में अर्पित करने से स्वर्ग लोक में महानता प्राप्त होती है।

यद्यत्प्रदीयते दानमुत्तराविषये नरैः महाफलमनन्तं च भवतीति विनिश्चयः

Whatever is given as a gift in the northern direction by men, It is certain to be of great fruit and endless.

मनुष्य उत्तर दिशा में जो कुछ भी दान में देते हैं, वह निश्चित रूप से महान फल देने वाला और अक्षय होता है।

हस्ते हस्तिरथं दत्त्वा चतुर्युक्तमुपोषितः प्राप्नोति परमाँल्लोकान्पुण्यकामसमन्वितान्

Having given a four-horse chariot to the hand, fasting, one attains the highest worlds endowed with the desire for merit.

चार घोड़ों का रथ हाथ में देकर व्रत करने वाला मनुष्य पुण्य की इच्छा से युक्त उत्तम लोकों को प्राप्त करता है।

चित्रायामृषभं दत्त्वा पुण्यान्गन्धांश्च भारत चरत्यप्सरसां लोके रमते नन्दने तथा

Having given a bull to Citrā, and fragrant substances, O descendant of Bharata, he roams in the world of the celestial nymphs, and delights in Nandana.

हे भरत के वंशज, चित्र को बैल और सुगंधित पदार्थ देकर, वह दिव्य अप्सराओं की दुनिया में घूमता है, और नंदना में प्रसन्न होता है।

स्वातावथ धनं दत्त्वा यदिष्टतममात्मनः प्राप्नोति लोकान्स शुभानिह चैव महद्यशः

Having given wealth to the needy and to one's own beloved, one attains the auspicious worlds and great fame in this world.

जरूरतमंदों और अपने प्रियजनों को धन देने से मनुष्य को शुभ लोक और इस लोक में महान प्रसिद्धि मिलती है।

विशाखायामनड्वाहं धेनुं दत्त्वा च दुग्धदाम् सप्रासङ्गं च शकटं सधान्यं वस्त्रसंयुतम्

Having given a cow and a bull to Vishākhā, and a milk-giving cow, And a cart with a yoke, along with grain and cloth,

विशाखा को एक गाय और एक बैल, और एक दूध देने वाली गाय, और अनाज और कपड़े के साथ एक जुए वाली गाड़ी देकर,

पितॄन्देवांश्च प्रीणाति प्रेत्य चानन्त्यमश्नुते न च दुर्गाण्यवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति

He pleases the ancestors and gods, and attains immortality after death. He does not encounter difficulties, and goes to the world of heaven.

वह पितरों और देवताओं को प्रसन्न करता है और मृत्यु के बाद अमरत्व प्राप्त करता है। उसे कठिनाइयों का सामना नहीं करना पड़ता और वह स्वर्ग लोक को प्राप्त होता है।

दत्त्वा यथोक्तं विप्रेभ्यो वृत्तिमिष्टां स विन्दति नरकादींश्च संक्लेशान्नाप्नोतीति विनिश्चयः

Having given as prescribed to the Brahmins, he obtains the desired livelihood. It is certain that he does not experience the torments of hell and so on.

ब्राह्मणों को यथाविधि दान देने से उसे अभीष्ट आजीविका प्राप्त होती है। यह निश्चित है कि उसे नरक आदि की यातनाएँ नहीं भोगनी पड़तीं।

अनुराधासु प्रावारं वस्त्रान्तरमुपोषितः दत्त्वा युगशतं चापि नरः स्वर्गे महीयते

On the Anuradha asterism, one should observe a fast and give away a garment or a piece of cloth. By doing so, one attains greatness in heaven for a hundred years.

अनुराधा नक्षत्र पर व्यक्ति को व्रत रखना चाहिए और एक वस्त्र या कपड़े का टुकड़ा दान करना चाहिए। ऐसा करने से मनुष्य को सौ वर्ष तक स्वर्ग में महानता प्राप्त होती है।

कालशाकं तु विप्रेभ्यो दत्त्वा मर्त्यः समूलकम् ज्येष्ठायामृद्धिमिष्टां वै गतिमिष्टां च विन्दति

Having given to the Brahmins the Kālaśāka with its roots, a man obtains the desired prosperity and the desired goal in the constellation Jyeṣṭhā.

ज्येष्ठा नक्षत्र में कालाशाक को जड़ सहित ब्राह्मण को दान करने से मनुष्य को अभीष्ट समृद्धि तथा अभीष्ट लक्ष्य की प्राप्ति होती है।

मूले मूलफलं दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणेभ्यः समाहितः पितॄन्प्रीणयते चापि गतिमिष्टां च गच्छति

Having given the root and fruit to the Brahmins, with concentration, he pleases the ancestors and attains the desired destination.

वह जड़ और फल को एकाग्रचित्त होकर ब्राह्मणों को दान देकर पितरों को प्रसन्न करता है और इच्छित स्थान प्राप्त करता है।

अथ पूर्वास्वषाढासु दधिपात्राण्युपोषितः कुलवृत्तोपसंपन्ने ब्राह्मणे वेदपारगे प्रदाय जायते प्रेत्य कुले सुबहुगोकुले

Then, in the first month of the rainy season, having fasted, and having given to a Brahmin who is accomplished in the conduct of his family and is learned in the Vedas, one

फिर वर्षा ऋतु के पहले महीने में व्रत करके अपने कुल के आचरण में निपुण तथा वेदों के विद्वान ब्राह्मण को दान देना चाहिए।

उदमन्थं ससर्पिष्कं प्रभूतमधुफाणितम् दत्त्वोत्तरास्वषाढासु सर्वकामानवाप्नुयात्

One should offer a pot of milk with curds, ghee, honey, and molasses, and give it to the Uttarāṣāḍhā constellation. By doing this, one will attain all

उत्तराषाढ़ा नक्षत्र में एक लोटा दूध में दही, घी, शहद और गुड़ मिलाकर अर्घ्य देना चाहिए। ऐसा करने से मनुष्य को सब कुछ प्राप्त हो जायेगा

दुग्धं त्वभिजिते योगे दत्त्वा मधुघृताप्लुतम् धर्मनित्यो मनीषिभ्यः स्वर्गलोके महीयते

Having given milk to the Abhijit yoga, bathed in honey and ghee, One who is devoted to Dharma and wise is honored in the heavenly world.

अभिजीत योग को दूध पिलाकर, शहद और घी से स्नान कराकर, धर्म में समर्पित और बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को स्वर्ग लोक में सम्मानित किया जाता है।

श्रवणे कम्बलं दत्त्वा वस्त्रान्तरितमेव च श्वेतेन याति यानेन सर्वलोकानसंवृतान्

Having given a woolen blanket, wrapped in cloth, he goes in a white vehicle, uncovered, to all the worlds.

वह ऊनी कम्बल देकर, कपड़े में लपेटकर, बिना ढके सफेद वाहन में बैठकर सभी लोकों में जाता है।

गोप्रयुक्तं धनिष्ठासु यानं दत्त्वा समाहितः वस्त्ररश्मिधरं सद्यः प्रेत्य राज्यं प्रपद्यते

Having given a chariot drawn by cows in Dhanishtha, with a concentrated mind, one attains the kingdom after death, wearing a garment with rays.

धनिष्ठा में गायों द्वारा जुता हुआ रथ प्रदान कर एकाग्रचित्त होकर किरणों वाला वस्त्र धारण करने वाला मनुष्य मृत्यु के बाद राज्य प्राप्त करता है।

गन्धाञ्शतभिषग्योगे दत्त्वा सागुरुचन्दनान् प्राप्नोत्यप्सरसां लोकान्प्रेत्य गन्धांश्च शाश्वतान्

Having given perfumes, sandalwood and aloe wood in the Śatabhiṣa yoga, one attains the world of the celestial nymphs and eternal perfumes after death.

शतभिषा योग में इत्र, चंदन और घृत का दान करने से मृत्यु के बाद दिव्य अप्सराओं और शाश्वत सुगंधियों के लोक की प्राप्ति होती है।

पूर्वभाद्रपदायोगे राजमाषान्प्रदाय तु सर्वभक्षफलोपेतः स वै प्रेत्य सुखी भवेत्

By giving Rajma beans on the conjunction of the previous Bhadrapada, one becomes endowed with the fruit of all food and becomes happy after death.

पिछले भाद्रपद के संयोग में राजमा की फलियाँ देने से मनुष्य सभी अन्नों के फल से संपन्न हो जाता है और मृत्यु के बाद सुखी हो जाता है।

औरभ्रमुत्तरायोगे यस्तु मांसं प्रयच्छति स पितॄन्प्रीणयति वै प्रेत्य चानन्त्यमश्नुते

One who offers meat to me in the Andhrabhrumuttarayoga pleases the ancestors and attains immortality after death.

जो मनुष्य आंध्रभ्रमुत्तरयोग में मुझे मांस अर्पित करता है, उसके पितर प्रसन्न होते हैं और मृत्यु के बाद अमरत्व प्राप्त करते हैं।

कांस्योपदोहनां धेनुं रेवत्यां यः प्रयच्छति सा प्रेत्य कामानादाय दातारमुपतिष्ठति

One who gives a cow with a copper pot to Revati after death, she comes to the giver, having brought the desired objects.

जो मनुष्य मरने के बाद रेवती को तांबे के पात्र में गाय देता है, वह इच्छित वस्तु लेकर दाता के पास आती है।

रथमश्वसमायुक्तं दत्त्वाश्विन्यां नरोत्तमः हस्त्यश्वरथसंपन्ने वर्चस्वी जायते कुले

Having given a chariot with horses, the best of men, one is born in a family endowed with elephants, horses, and chariots, and with splendor.

मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ, घोड़ों से युक्त रथ देने पर मनुष्य हाथियों, घोड़ों और रथों तथा वैभव से सम्पन्न कुल में जन्म लेता है।

भरणीषु द्विजातिभ्यस्तिलधेनुं प्रदाय वै गाः सुप्रभूताः प्राप्नोति नरः प्रेत्य यशस्तथा

By giving a cow with sesamum seeds to Brahmins in the Bharani constellation, a man obtains many cows and fame after death.

भरणी नक्षत्र में ब्राह्मण को तिल वाली गाय दान करने से मनुष्य को मरने के बाद बहुत सी गायें और यश प्राप्त होता है।

भीष्म उवाच इत्येष लक्षणोद्देशः प्रोक्तो नक्षत्रयोगतः देवक्या नारदेनेह सा स्नुषाभ्योऽब्रवीदिदम्

Bhishma said: Thus this description of characteristics has been stated according to the conjunction of the constellations. This was told by Narada to Devaki, who then told it to her daughters
