युधिष्ठिर उवाच दानं यज्ञक्रिया चेह किं स्वित्प्रेत्य महाफलम् कस्य ज्यायः फलं प्रोक्तं कीदृशेभ्यः कथं कदा

Yudhisthira said: What is the great fruit of giving and performing sacrifices here and hereafter? What is the greatest fruit said to be for whom, in what way, when?

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: इहलोक और परलोक में दान और यज्ञ करने का महान फल क्या है? सबसे बड़ा फल क्या कहा जाता है जो किसके लिए, किस प्रकार, कब होगा?

एतदिच्छामि विज्ञातुं याथातथ्येन भारत विद्वञ्जिज्ञासमानाय दानधर्मान्प्रचक्ष्व मे

I wish to know this in truth, O descendant of Bharata. O learned one, for one who is seeking to know, please explain to me the duties of charity.

हे भरत के वंशज, मैं इसे सत्य रूप से जानना चाहता हूं। हे विद्वान, जो कोई जानना चाहता है, कृपया मुझे दान के कर्तव्यों को समझाएं।

अन्तर्वेद्यां च यद्दत्तं श्रद्धया चानृशंस्यतः किं स्विन्निःश्रेयसं तात तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह

What is given within the sacrificial enclosure, with faith and without cruelty, O father, what is the most beneficial thing? Tell me that, O grandfather.

हे पिता, विश्वास के साथ और क्रूरता के बिना, यज्ञशाला के भीतर जो दिया जाता है, वह सबसे अधिक लाभकारी चीज क्या है? वह तो मुझे बताओ, हे दादा!

भीष्म उवाच रौद्रं कर्म क्षत्रियस्य सततं तात वर्तते तस्य वैतानिकं कर्म दानं चैवेह पावनम्

Bhishma said: O son, the terrible deeds of a kshatriya always take place. The sacrificial rites and the giving of gifts are the purifying ones here.

भीष्म ने कहा: हे पुत्र, क्षत्रिय के भयानक कर्म सदैव होते रहते हैं। यहां यज्ञ अनुष्ठान और उपहार देना पवित्र करने वाले हैं।

न तु पापकृतां राज्ञां प्रतिगृह्णन्ति साधवः एतस्मात्कारणाद्यज्ञैर्यजेद्राजाप्तदक्षिणैः

The good do not accept gifts from kings who are sinful. For this reason, one should perform sacrifices with gifts given by kings.

अच्छे लोग पापी राजाओं से उपहार स्वीकार नहीं करते। इस कारण मनुष्य को राजाओं द्वारा दिये हुए दान से यज्ञ करना चाहिए।

अथ चेत्प्रतिगृह्णीयुर्दद्यादहरहर्नृपः श्रद्धामास्थाय परमां पावनं ह्येतदुत्तमम्

And if they accept, the king should give them daily. Having faith in the highest, this is indeed purifying and supreme.

और यदि वे स्वीकार करें, तो राजा को उन्हें प्रतिदिन देना चाहिए। सर्वोच्च में विश्वास रखना, यह वास्तव में शुद्ध करने वाला और सर्वोच्च है।

ब्राह्मणांस्तर्पयेद्द्रव्यैस्ततो यज्ञे यतव्रतः मैत्रान्साधून्वेदविदः शीलवृत्ततपोन्वितान्

Having satisfied the Brahmanas with wealth, he should then be of controlled vows in the sacrifice. The friendly, the good, the knowers of the Vedas, endowed with character, conduct and auster

ब्राह्मणों को धन से संतुष्ट करने के बाद उसे यज्ञ में संयमित व्रत रखना चाहिए। मिलनसार, अच्छे, वेदों के ज्ञाता, चरित्र, आचरण और तपस्या से संपन्न

यत्ते तेन करिष्यन्ति कृतं तेन भविष्यति यज्ञान्साधय साधुभ्यः स्वाद्वन्नान्दक्षिणावतः

Whatever they will do with that, will be done with that. Perform sacrifices for the good, for those who give good food and gifts.

वे उससे जो करेंगे, उसी से करेंगे. भलाई के लिए, उन लोगों के लिए बलिदान करो जो अच्छा भोजन और उपहार देते हैं।

इष्टं दत्तं च मन्येथा आत्मानं दानकर्मणा पूजयेथा यायजूकांस्तवाप्यंशो भवेद्यथा

You should consider yourself as having given and offered, by the act of giving. You should worship the sacrificers, so that you may also have a share.

You should support the Brahmanas who are the bearers of offspring and who bear many burdens. By that one becomes the bearer of offspring, just as the father.

आपको उन ब्राह्मणों का समर्थन करना चाहिए जो संतान के वाहक हैं और जो कई बोझ उठाते हैं। इससे मनुष्य पिता के समान संतान उत्पन्न करने वाला बन जाता है।

यावतो वै साधुधर्मान्सन्तः संवर्तयन्त्युत सर्वे ते चापि भर्तव्या नरा ये बहुभारिणः

As many good qualities as the good people practice, all those who are heavy with many burdens should be supported.

अच्छे लोग जितने अच्छे गुणों का अभ्यास करते हैं, उन सभी का समर्थन करना चाहिए जो कई बोझों से दबे हुए हैं।

समृद्धः संप्रयच्छस्व ब्राह्मणेभ्यो युधिष्ठिर धेनूरनडुहोऽन्नानि च्छत्रं वासांस्युपानहौ

O Yudhiṣṭhira, give to the Brahmanas, with all your wealth. Give cows, oxen, food, umbrella, garments, and shoes.

हे युधिष्ठिर, अपनी सारी संपत्ति ब्राह्मणों को दे दो। गाय, बैल, भोजन, छाता, वस्त्र और जूते दें।

आज्यानि यजमानेभ्यस्तथान्नाद्यानि भारत अश्ववन्ति च यानानि वेश्मानि शयनानि च

O descendant of the Bharata lineage, they gave away ghee, food, and other things to the sacrificers. They gave away horses, vehicles, houses, and beds.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज, उन्होंने यज्ञकर्ताओं को घी, भोजन और अन्य चीजें दीं। उन्होंने घोड़े, वाहन, घर और बिस्तर दे दिये।

एते देया व्युष्टिमन्तो लघूपायाश्च भारत अजुगुप्सांश्च विज्ञाय ब्राह्मणान्वृत्तिकर्शितान्

These should be given to the virtuous, the prosperous, and the poor, O descendant of Bharata. Knowing the Brahmanas to be distressed by poverty,

हे भरत के वंशज, इन्हें गुणी, समृद्ध और गरीबों को दिया जाना चाहिए। ब्राह्मणों को दरिद्रता से दुःखी जानकर,

उपच्छन्नं प्रकाशं वा वृत्त्या तान्प्रतिपादय राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां श्रेयस्तत्क्षत्रियान्प्रति

Whether concealed or revealed, declare them to them through your activities. The Rajasuya and Ashvamedha sacrifices are superior for Kshatriyas.

चाहे छुपाया गया हो या प्रकट किया गया हो, उन्हें अपनी गतिविधियों के माध्यम से उनके सामने घोषित करें। क्षत्रियों के लिए राजसूय और अश्वमेघ यज्ञ श्रेष्ठ हैं।

एवं पापैर्विमुक्तस्त्वं पूतः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि स्रंसयित्वा पुनः कोशं यद्राष्ट्रं पालयिष्यसि

Thus freed from sins, you will be purified and attain heaven. Having released the treasury, you will rule the kingdom.

इस प्रकार पापों से मुक्त होकर तुम शुद्ध हो जाओगे और स्वर्ग प्राप्त करोगे। राजकोष मुक्त करके तुम राज्य पर शासन करोगे।

ततश्च ब्रह्मभूयस्त्वमवाप्स्यसि धनानि च आत्मनश्च परेषां च वृत्तिं संरक्ष भारत

Then you will attain the state of Brahman and wealth. Protect the livelihood of yourself and others, O descendant of Bharata.

तब तुम्हें ब्रह्मपद और धन की प्राप्ति होगी। हे भरत के वंशज, अपनी और दूसरों की आजीविका की रक्षा करें।

पुत्रवच्चापि भृत्यान्स्वान्प्रजाश्च परिपालय योगक्षेमश्च ते नित्यं ब्राह्मणेष्वस्तु भारत

And like a son, protect your servants, your subjects. And may your prosperity and welfare always be with the Brahmanas, O descendant of Bharata.

और पुत्र के समान अपने सेवकों, अपनी प्रजा की रक्षा करो। और हे भरत के वंशज, आपकी समृद्धि और कल्याण हमेशा ब्राह्मणों के साथ रहे।

अरक्षितारं हर्तारं विलोप्तारमदायकम् तं स्म राजकलिं हन्युः प्रजाः संभूय निर्घृणम्

They should kill that cruel king who does not protect, who steals, who destroys, who does not give. The people should unite and kill that king who is cruel.

उन्हें उस क्रूर राजा को मार डालना चाहिए जो रक्षा नहीं करता, जो चोरी करता है, जो विनाश करता है, जो देता नहीं है। प्रजा को एकजुट होकर उस राजा को मार डालना चाहिए जो क्रूर है।

अहं वो रक्षितेत्युक्त्वा यो न रक्षति भूमिपः स संहत्य निहन्तव्यः श्वेव सोन्माद आतुरः

The king who, having said, "I shall protect you," does not protect, he should be killed collectively, like a mad dog.

जो राजा 'मैं तुम्हारी रक्षा करूंगा' कहकर भी रक्षा नहीं करता, उसे पागल कुत्ते की भाँति सामूहिक रूप से मार देना चाहिए।

पापं कुर्वन्ति यत्किंचित्प्रजा राज्ञा ह्यरक्षिताः चतुर्थं तस्य पापस्य राजा भारत विन्दति

Whatever sin the subjects commit when not protected by the king, The king, O descendant of Bharata, obtains a fourth part of that sin.

राजा द्वारा संरक्षित न होने पर प्रजा जो भी पाप करती है, हे भरत के वंशज, राजा को उस पाप का एक चौथाई हिस्सा मिलता है।

अप्याहुः सर्वमेवेति भूयोऽर्धमिति निश्चयः चतुर्थं मतमस्माकं मनोः श्रुत्वानुशासनम्

They say that all is the same, but the conclusion is that half is. This is our fourth opinion, having heard Manu's instruction.

वे कहते हैं कि सब एक ही है, लेकिन निष्कर्ष यह है कि आधा ही है। मनु का उपदेश सुनकर यह हमारा चौथा मत है।

शुभं वा यत्प्रकुर्वन्ति प्रजा राज्ञा सुरक्षिताः चतुर्थं तस्य पुण्यस्य राजा चाप्नोति भारत

Whatever good deeds the subjects perform, protected by the king, The king obtains a fourth part of that merit, O descendant of Bharata.

राजा द्वारा संरक्षित होकर प्रजा जो भी अच्छे कर्म करती है, राजा को उस पुण्य का एक चौथाई हिस्सा मिलता है, हे भरत के वंशज।

जीवन्तं त्वानुजीवन्तु प्रजाः सर्वा युधिष्ठिर पर्जन्यमिव भूतानि महाद्रुममिव द्विजाः

May all creatures live by you, O Yudhiṣṭhira, as long as you live. Like the rain, like the great tree, like the twice-born.

हे युधिष्ठिर, जब तक आप जीवित हैं, सभी प्राणी आपके द्वारा जीवित रहें। बारिश की तरह, विशाल वृक्ष की तरह, द्विजों की तरह।

कुबेरमिव रक्षांसि शतक्रतुमिवामराः ज्ञातयस्त्वानुजीवन्तु सुहृदश्च परंतप

May the demons be like Kubera, the gods like Indra, and your relatives and friends like you, O scorcher of enemies.
