देवा ऊचुः असुरस्तारको नाम त्वया दत्तवरः प्रभो सुरानृषींश्च क्लिश्नाति वधस्तस्य विधीयताम्

The gods said: O Lord, the demon named Tāraka, to whom you have granted a boon, harasses the gods and sages. Let his death be decreed.

अत: हे पितामह, हमारे मन में भय उत्पन्न हो गया है। हे भगवान, हमारी रक्षा करो, क्योंकि हमारे लिए कोई दूसरा आश्रय नहीं है।

ब्रह्मोवाच समोऽहं सर्वभूतानामधर्मं नेह रोचये हन्यतां तारकः क्षिप्रं सुरर्षिगणबाधकः

Brahma said: I am impartial towards all beings. I do not approve of adharma. Let Tāraka, the tormentor of the groups of celestial sages, be killed quickly.

ब्रह्मा ने कहा: मैं सभी प्राणियों के प्रति निष्पक्ष हूं। मैं अधर्म को स्वीकार नहीं करता. दिव्य ऋषियों के समूहों को पीड़ा देने वाले तारक को शीघ्र ही मार डाला जाए।

वेदा धर्माश्च नोत्सादं गच्छेयुः सुरसत्तमाः विहितं पूर्वमेवात्र मया वै व्येतु वो ज्वरः

O best of the gods, may the Vedas and the Dharma not be destroyed. I have already prescribed this before. May your fever be dispelled.

हे देवताओं में श्रेष्ठ, वेद और धर्म नष्ट न हों। मैं इसे पहले ही निर्धारित कर चुका हूं। आपका बुखार दूर हो जाये.

देवा ऊचुः वरदानाद्भगवतो दैतेयो बलगर्वितः देवैर्न शक्यते हन्तुं स कथं प्रशमं व्रजेत्

The gods said: By the boon of the Lord, the demon, proud of his strength, cannot be killed by the gods. How will he be subdued?

देवताओं ने कहा: भगवान के वरदान से, अपनी ताकत पर गर्व करने वाला राक्षस देवताओं द्वारा नहीं मारा जा सकता। वह कैसे वश में होगा?

स हि नैव स्म देवानां नासुराणां न रक्षसाम् वध्यः स्यामिति जग्राह वरं त्वत्तः पितामह

हन्यादवध्यान्वरदानपि चैव तपस्विनः संकल्पाभिरुचिः कामः सनातनतमोऽनलः

गम्यतां साधयिष्यामो वयं ह्यग्निभयात्सुराः एतावदुक्त्वा मण्डूकस्त्वरितो जलमाविशत्

We shall go and accomplish it, for we are afraid of the fire. Having said this much, the frog quickly entered the water.

हुताशनस्तु बुबुधे मण्डूकस्याथ पैशुनम् शशाप स तमासाद्य न रसान्वेत्स्यसीति वै

तं स संयुज्य शापेन मण्डूकं पावको ययौ अन्यत्र वासाय विभुर्न च देवानदर्शयत्

देवास्त्वनुग्रहं चक्रुर्मण्डूकानां भृगूद्वह यत्तच्छृणु महाबाहो गदतो मम सर्वशः

बिलवासगतांश्चैव निरादानानचेतसः गतासूनपि वः शुष्कान्भूमिः संधारयिष्यति तमोगतायामपि च निशायां विचरिष्यथ

And those who have gone to live in holes, who are without food and without mind, The earth will support you, even when you are dead and dry. And even in the night that

अथ तान्द्विरदः कश्चित्सुरेन्द्रद्विरदोपमः अश्वत्थस्थोऽग्निरित्येवं प्राह देवान्भृगूद्वह

Then a certain elephant, resembling the elephant of Indra, while standing in the banyan tree, said to the gods, "This is Agni," thus spoke the descendant of Bhrigu.

तब इंद्र के हाथी के समान एक हाथी ने बरगद के पेड़ पर खड़े होकर देवताओं से कहा, "यह अग्नि है," भृगु के वंशज ने इस प्रकार कहा।

शशाप ज्वलनः सर्वान्द्विरदान्क्रोधमूर्छितः प्रतीपा भवतां जिह्वा भवित्रीति भृगूद्वह

The angry Jvalana cursed all the Dvirada people, saying, "Your tongues shall be turned back."

इत्युक्त्वा निःसृतोऽश्वत्थादग्निर्वारणसूचितः प्रविवेश शमीगर्भमथ वह्निः सुषुप्सया

अनुग्रहं तु नागानां यं चक्रुः शृणु तं प्रभो देवा भृगुकुलश्रेष्ठ प्रीताः सत्यपराक्रमाः

But listen, O Lord, to the favor that they did to the Nāgas. The gods, foremost in the family of Bhṛgu, were pleased, of true valor,

देवताओं ने कहा: तुम अपनी जिह्वा से भी सारा भोजन ग्रहण करोगे। और तुम अस्पष्ट अक्षरों के साथ ऊंचे स्वर से शब्द बोलोगे। इतना कहकर देवताओं ने पुनः अग्नि का पीछा किया।

अश्वत्थान्निःसृतश्चाग्निः शमीगर्भगतस्तदा शुकेन ख्यापितो विप्र तं देवाः समुपाद्रवन्

The fire that had emerged from the ashvattha tree, then entered the womb of the shami tree. O brahmin, it was proclaimed by the parrot, and the gods rushed towards it

अश्वत्थ वृक्ष से निकली अग्नि फिर शमी वृक्ष के गर्भ में समा गयी। हे ब्राह्मण, तोते ने इसकी घोषणा की और देवता उसकी ओर दौड़ पड़े

शशाप शुकमग्निस्तु वाग्विहीनो भविष्यसि जिह्वां चावर्तयामास तस्यापि हुतभुक्तदा

Agni cursed the parrot, saying, "You will become devoid of speech." And the fire-god also twisted the tongue of that parrot.

अग्नि ने तोते को श्राप देते हुए कहा, "तू वाणी से रहित हो जाएगा।" और अग्निदेव ने उस तोते की जीभ भी मरोड़ दी।

दृष्ट्वा तु ज्वलनं देवाः शुकमूचुर्दयान्विताः भविता न त्वमत्यन्तं शकुने नष्टवागिति

Seeing the fire, the gods, full of compassion, said to the parrot: "You will not be completely destroyed, O parrot, your speech will be lost."

अग्नि को देखकर देवताओं ने करुणा से भरकर तोते से कहा, "हे तोते, तुम पूर्णतः नष्ट नहीं होगे, तुम्हारी वाणी नष्ट हो जायेगी।"

आवृत्तजिह्वस्य सतो वाक्यं कान्तं भविष्यति बालस्येव प्रवृद्धस्य कलमव्यक्तमद्भुतम्

The words of one whose tongue is turned back will be sweet. Like a child's, the indistinct and wonderful speech of one who has grown up.

जिसकी जीभ पीछे की ओर होती है उसकी बातें मीठी होती हैं। किसी बच्चे की तरह, बड़े हो चुके व्यक्ति की अस्पष्ट और अद्भुत वाणी.

इत्युक्त्वा तं शमीगर्भे वह्निमालक्ष्य देवताः तदेवायतनं चक्रुः पुण्यं सर्वक्रियास्वपि

Having said this, the gods saw the fire in the heart of the śamī tree and made that very place a sacred place for all rites.

तमूचुर्विबुधाः सर्वे ते चैव परमर्षयः त्वां नियोक्ष्यामहे कार्ये तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति कृते च तस्मिन्भविता तवापि सुमहान्गुणः

देवा ऊचुः असुरस्तारको नाम ब्रह्मणो वरदर्पितः अस्मान्प्रबाधते वीर्याद्वधस्तस्य विधीयताम्

The gods said: The asura named Tāraka, arrogant due to the boon granted by Brahma, is oppressing us with his valour. Let his death be decreed.

देवताओं ने कहा- तारक नाम का असुर ब्रह्मा के वरदान से अहंकार करके अपने पराक्रम से हम पर अत्याचार कर रहा है। उसकी मौत का फैसला सुनाया जाए.

इमान्देवगणांस्तात प्रजापतिगणांस्तथा ऋषींश्चापि महाभागान्परित्रायस्व पावक

O Agni, protect these hosts of gods, these hosts of Prajapati, and also the great and fortunate sages.

हे अग्नि, इन देवताओं के यजमानों, इन प्रजापतियों के यजमानों तथा महान और भाग्यशाली ऋषियों की भी रक्षा करें।

अपत्यं तेजसा युक्तं प्रवीरं जनय प्रभो यद्भयं नोऽसुरात्तस्मान्नाशयेद्धव्यवाहन

O Lord, generate a son endowed with energy and prowess, who will destroy the fear of the demons from us, O bearer of oblations.

हे भगवान, शक्ति और पराक्रम से संपन्न एक पुत्र उत्पन्न करें, जो हमारे ऊपर से राक्षसों के भय को नष्ट कर दे, हे यज्ञवाहक।

शप्तानां नो महादेव्या नान्यदस्ति परायणम् अन्यत्र भवतो वीर्यं तस्मात्त्रायस्व नस्ततः

"O Mahadeva, we are cursed. There is no other refuge for us. " "Other than your valour, therefore, protect us from this."

"हे महादेव, हम शापित हैं। हमारे लिए कोई अन्य आश्रय नहीं है।" "इसलिए, अपनी वीरता के अलावा, हमें इससे बचाएं।"

इत्युक्तः स तथेत्युक्त्वा भगवान्हव्यकव्यभुक् जगामाथ दुराधर्षो गङ्गां भागीरथीं प्रति
