भीष्म उवाच ततो नारायणसुहृन्नारदो भगवानृषिः शंकरस्योमया सार्धं संवादं प्रत्यभाषत

Bhishma said: Then the blessed sage Narada, the friend of Narayana, spoke to Shankara in conversation with Uma.

भीष्म ने कहा: तब नारायण के मित्र, धन्य ऋषि नारद ने उमा के साथ बातचीत में शंकर से बात की।

तपश्चचार धर्मात्मा वृषभाङ्कः सुरेश्वरः पुण्ये गिरौ हिमवति सिद्धचारणसेविते

The virtuous bull-marked lord of the gods practiced austerities on the auspicious mountain Himālaya, frequented by siddhas and cāraṇas.

देवताओं के सदाचारी वृषभ-चिन्हधारी स्वामी ने शुभ पर्वत हिमालय पर तपस्या की, जहाँ अक्सर सिद्ध और चारण आते थे।

नानौषधियुते रम्ये नानापुष्पसमाकुले अप्सरोगणसंकीर्णे भूतसंघनिषेविते

in a beautiful place with various medicines, filled with various flowers, crowded with groups of celestial nymphs, frequented by groups of spirits,

विभिन्न औषधियों से युक्त, विभिन्न पुष्पों से परिपूर्ण, दिव्य अप्सराओं के समूहों से भरे, आत्माओं के समूहों से भरे हुए, एक सुंदर स्थान में,

तत्र देवो मुदा युक्तो भूतसंघशतैर्वृतः नानारूपैर्विरूपैश्च दिव्यैरद्भुतदर्शनैः

There, the god, full of joy, surrounded by hundreds of groups of beings, of various forms, of various shapes, divine, of wonderful appearance,

वहाँ, भगवान, आनंद से भरे हुए, प्राणियों के सैकड़ों समूहों से घिरे हुए, विभिन्न रूपों वाले, विभिन्न आकृतियों वाले, दिव्य, अद्भुत रूप वाले,

सिंहव्याघ्रगजप्रख्यैः सर्वजातिसमन्वितैः क्रोष्टुकद्वीपिवदनैरृक्षर्षभमुखैस्तथा

with faces like lions, tigers, and elephants, all of them endowed with various species, with faces like jackals, monkeys, and bulls,

शेर, बाघ और हाथी जैसे चेहरे वाले, वे सभी विभिन्न प्रजातियों से संपन्न थे, सियार, बंदर और बैल जैसे चेहरे वाले थे,

उलूकवदनैर्भीमैः श्येनभासमुखैस्तथा नानावर्णमृगप्रख्यैः सर्वजातिसमन्वयैः किंनरैर्देवगन्धर्वैर्यक्षभूतगणैस्तथा

With faces like owls, terrible, with faces like hawks, With various colors, like deer, with all kinds of forms, With kinnaras, gods, gandharvas, and hosts

उल्लू जैसे मुख वाले, भयानक, बाज जैसे मुख वाले, विभिन्न रंगों वाले, हिरण जैसे, सभी प्रकार के रूप वाले, किन्नर, देवता, गंधर्व और यजमान वाले

दिव्यपुष्पसमाकीर्णं दिव्यमालाविभूषितम् दिव्यचन्दनसंयुक्तं दिव्यधूपेन धूपितम् तत्सदो वृषभाङ्कस्य दिव्यवादित्रनादितम्

Filled with divine flowers, adorned with divine garlands, Smeared with divine sandalwood paste, perfumed with divine incense, That place of the Bull-emblemed One, resounding with divine musical instruments

दिव्य पुष्पों से परिपूर्ण, दिव्य मालाओं से सुशोभित, दिव्य चंदन के लेप से सना हुआ, दिव्य धूप से सुगंधित, दिव्य संगीत वाद्ययंत्रों से गूंजता हुआ वह बैल-चिह्न वाला स्थान

मृदङ्गपणवोद्घुष्टं शङ्खभेरीनिनादितम् नृत्यद्भिर्भूतसंघैश्च बर्हिणैश्च समन्ततः

Filled with the sounds of drums and cymbals, conch shells and kettledrums, With groups of spirits dancing all around, and with peacocks,

ढोल, झांझ, शंख और नगाड़ों की ध्वनि से परिपूर्ण, चारों ओर नृत्य करती आत्माओं के समूह और मोरों से भरा हुआ,

प्रनृत्ताप्सरसं दिव्यं दिव्यस्त्रीगणसेवितम् दृष्टिकान्तमनिर्देश्यं दिव्यमद्भुतदर्शनम्

The celestial nymphs dance there, and it is served by groups of celestial women. It is pleasing to the eye, indescribable, celestial, and wondrous to behold.

वहाँ दिव्य अप्सराएँ नृत्य करती हैं और दिव्य स्त्रियों के समूह इसकी सेवा करते हैं। यह देखने में सुखदायक, अवर्णनीय, दिव्य और देखने में अद्भुत है।

स गिरिस्तपसा तस्य भूतेशस्य व्यरोचत

By his austerities, that mountain shone forth for the Lord of Beings.

उनकी तपस्या से, वह पर्वत प्राणियों के भगवान के लिए चमक उठा।

स्वाध्यायपरमैर्विप्रैर्ब्रह्मघोषैर्विनादितः षट्पदैरुपगीतैश्च माधवाप्रतिमो गिरिः

Filled with brahmins devoted to study, resounding with the sound of the Vedas, And with songs of the six-syllabled mantra, that mountain was like Madhava himself.

अध्ययन में समर्पित ब्राह्मणों से भरा हुआ, वेदों की ध्वनि से गूंजता हुआ, और छह अक्षरों वाले मंत्र के गीतों से गूंजता हुआ वह पर्वत स्वयं माधव के समान था।

तं महोत्सवसंकाशं भीमरूपधरं पुनः दृष्ट्वा मुनिगणस्यासीत्परा प्रीतिर्जनार्दन

Seeing him, who was like a great festival, and again wearing a terrible form, there was great joy in the assembly of sages, O Janardana.

हे जनार्दन, महान उत्सव के समान तथा पुनः भयानक रूप धारण करने वाले उसे देखकर ऋषियों की सभा में बड़ा हर्ष हुआ।

मुनयश्च महाभागाः सिद्धाश्चैवोर्ध्वरेतसः मरुतो वसवः साध्या विश्वेदेवाः सनातनाः

The sages, the highly fortunate ones, and the Siddhas, the ones with sublimated sexual energy, The Maruts, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Vishvadevas,

ऋषि, अत्यधिक भाग्यशाली, और सिद्ध, उत्कृष्ट यौन ऊर्जा वाले, मरुत, वसु, साध्य, विश्वदेव,

यक्षा नागाः पिशाचाश्च लोकपाला हुताशनाः भावाश्च सर्वे न्यग्भूतास्तत्रैवासन्समागताः

Yakshas, nagas, pishachas, the guardians of the world, and the fire god, And all the elements, having become subservient, came together there.

यक्ष, नाग, पिशाच, विश्व के संरक्षक, अग्नि देवता और सभी तत्व, अधीन होकर, वहां एक साथ आए।

ऋतवः सर्वपुष्पैश्च व्यकिरन्त महाद्भुतैः ओषध्यो ज्वलमानाश्च द्योतयन्ति स्म तद्वनम्

The seasons scattered with all kinds of flowers, which were very wonderful. The herbs, blazing, illuminated that forest.

ऋतुओं में तरह-तरह के फूल बिखरे हुए थे, जो बहुत अद्भुत थे। जड़ी-बूटियाँ धधकती हुई उस वन को प्रकाशित कर रही थीं।

विहगाश्च मुदा युक्ताः प्रानृत्यन्व्यनदंश्च ह गिरिपृष्ठेषु रम्येषु व्याहरन्तो जनप्रियाः

The birds were joyful and danced and sang. On the beautiful mountain slopes, they uttered sounds that were dear to people.

पक्षी आनंदित थे और नाचने-गाने लगे। खूबसूरत पहाड़ी ढलानों पर, उन्होंने ऐसी ध्वनियाँ निकालीं जो लोगों को प्रिय थीं।

तत्र देवो गिरितटे दिव्यधातुविभूषिते पर्यङ्क इव विभ्राजन्नुपविष्टो महामनाः

There, the god, adorned with divine substances on the mountain slope, Seated like a couch, shining, of great mind.

वहां पर्वत की ढलान पर दिव्य द्रव्यों से सुशोभित, शयनकक्ष के समान चमकते हुए, महान बुद्धि वाले भगवान विराजमान हैं।

व्याघ्रचर्माम्बरधरः सिंहचर्मोत्तरच्छदः व्यालयज्ञोपवीती च लोहिताङ्गदभूषणः

Wearing a tiger skin as his upper garment and a lion skin as his lower garment, Wearing a garland of skulls and adorned with red armlets,

अपने ऊपरी वस्त्र के रूप में बाघ की खाल और अपने निचले वस्त्र के रूप में शेर की खाल पहने हुए, खोपड़ियों की माला पहने हुए और लाल बाजूबंद से सुशोभित थे।

हरिश्मश्रुर्जटी भीमो भयकर्ता सुरद्विषाम् अभयः सर्वभूतानां भक्तानां वृषभध्वजः

One with a tawny beard, matted locks, and terrible, the cause of fear to the enemies of the gods, The giver of fearlessness to all beings, the bull-marked one to

भूरी दाढ़ी, उलझे हुए बाल और भयानक, देवताओं के शत्रुओं के लिए भय का कारण, सभी प्राणियों को अभय देने वाला, बैल के निशान वाला।

दृष्ट्वा तमृषयः सर्वे शिरोभिरवनीं गताः विमुक्ताः सर्वपापेभ्यः क्षान्ता विगतकल्मषाः

Seeing him, all the sages bowed their heads to the ground, freed from all sins, patient and free from faults,

उन्हें देखकर सभी पापों से मुक्त, धैर्यवान और दोषों से मुक्त सभी ऋषियों ने भूमि पर सिर झुकाया।

तस्य भूतपतेः स्थानं भीमरूपधरं बभौ अप्रधृष्यतरं चैव महोरगसमाकुलम्

The abode of that lord of beings, wearing a terrible form, was extremely invincible and full of great serpents.

भयानक रूप धारण करने वाले उन प्राणियों के स्वामी का निवास स्थान अत्यंत अजेय और महान सर्पों से भरा हुआ था।

क्षणेनैवाभवत्सर्वमद्भुतं मधुसूदन तत्सदो वृषभाङ्कस्य भीमरूपधरं बभौ

In an instant, everything became wonderful, O Madhusudana. The assembly of the bull-marked one shone with a terrible form.

हे मधुसूदन, एक ही पल में सब कुछ अद्भुत हो गया। बैलचिह्न वाली सभा भयानक रूप से चमक उठी।

तमभ्ययाच्छैलसुता भूतस्त्रीगणसंवृता हरतुल्याम्बरधरा समानव्रतचारिणी

The daughter of the mountain approached him, surrounded by a group of female spirits, wearing garments equal to Shiva's, practicing the same vows.

पहाड़ की बेटी, शिव के समान वस्त्र पहनकर, उन्हीं प्रतिज्ञाओं का पालन करते हुए, महिला आत्माओं के एक समूह से घिरी हुई, उनके पास आई।

बिभ्रती कलशं रौक्मं सर्वतीर्थजलोद्भवम् गिरिस्रवाभिः पुण्याभिः सर्वतोऽनुगता शुभा

Bearing a golden pot filled with water from all the holy places, Followed by auspicious mountain streams from all directions,

सभी पवित्र स्थानों से जल से भरा हुआ स्वर्ण कलश धारण करना, सभी दिशाओं से शुभ पर्वत धाराओं का अनुसरण करना,

पुष्पवृष्ट्याभिवर्षन्ती गन्धैर्बहुविधैस्तथा सेवन्ती हिमवत्पार्श्वं हरपार्श्वमुपागमत्

Showering flowers and various fragrances, She approached the side of the Himalayas, approaching the side of Shiva.

फूलों और विभिन्न सुगंधों की वर्षा करते हुए, वह हिमालय के किनारे, शिव के पास पहुंची।

ततः स्मयन्ती पाणिभ्यां नर्मार्थं चारुदर्शना हरनेत्रे शुभे देवी सहसा सा समावृणोत्

Then, with a smile, the beautiful one, for the sake of play, suddenly covered the auspicious eyes of Hara with her hands.

फिर, एक मुस्कान के साथ, सुंदरी ने, खेल की खातिर, अचानक अपने हाथों से हारा की शुभ आँखों को ढँक दिया।

संवृताभ्यां तु नेत्राभ्यां तमोभूतमचेतनम् निर्होमं निर्वषट्कारं तत्सदः सहसाभवत्

With their eyes closed, they became like darkness, unconscious. The sacrificial fire was not offered, the "svasti" chant was not performed, and the assembly hall suddenly became like that.

आँखें बंद करके वे अँधेरे की तरह बेहोश हो गये। यज्ञ नहीं किया गया, स्वस्ति मंत्र नहीं गाया गया और सभा भवन अचानक वैसा हो गया।

जनश्च विमनाः सर्वो भयत्राससमन्वितः निमीलिते भूतपतौ नष्टसूर्य इवाभवत्

And all the people were distressed, filled with fear and terror. When the Lord of Beings closed his eyes, the world was as if the sun had set.

और सब लोग व्याकुल, भय और आतंक से भर गए। जब प्राणियों के स्वामी ने अपनी आँखें बंद कीं, तो संसार ऐसा था मानो सूर्य अस्त हो गया हो।

ततो वितिमिरो लोकः क्षणेन समपद्यत ज्वाला च महती दीप्ता ललाटात्तस्य निःसृता

Then the world became free from darkness in an instant. And a great flame blazed forth from his forehead.

तब संसार क्षण भर में अन्धकार से मुक्त हो गया। और उसके माथे से बड़ी ज्वाला भड़क उठी।

तृतीयं चास्य संभूतं नेत्रमादित्यसंनिभम् युगान्तसदृशं दीप्तं येनासौ मथितो गिरिः

And his third eye, like the sun, blazing like the end of the age, with which he ground the mountain.

और उसकी तीसरी आँख, सूर्य के समान, युग के अंत के समान चमक रही थी, जिससे उसने पर्वत को कुचल डाला।

ततो गिरिसुता दृष्ट्वा दीप्ताग्निसदृशेक्षणम् हरं प्रणम्य शिरसा ददर्शायतलोचना

Then the daughter of the mountain, seeing the eyes like a blazing fire, bowed her head to Shiva and looked with her long eyes.

तब पर्वत की पुत्री ने प्रज्वलित अग्नि के समान नेत्रों को देखकर शिव को सिर झुकाया और अपनी लंबी आंखों से देखा।

दह्यमाने वने तस्मिन्सशालसरलद्रुमे सचन्दनवने रम्ये दिव्यौषधिविदीपिते

When the forest was burning, with its sal and sāl trees, with its beautiful sandalwood forest, and with its divine herbs burning,

जब जंगल जल रहा था, उसके साल और साल के पेड़, उसके सुंदर चंदन के जंगल, और उसकी दिव्य जड़ी-बूटियाँ जल रही थीं,

मृगयूथैर्द्रुतैर्भीतैर्हरपार्श्वमुपागतैः शरणं चाप्यविन्दद्भिस्तत्सदः संकुलं बभौ

With herds of deer, frightened and swift, coming to the side of Hara, And not finding refuge, the assembly shone with them.

हिरणों के झुण्ड डरे हुए और वेग से हारा की ओर आ रहे थे और शरण न पाकर सभा उनसे चमक रही थी।

ततो नभःस्पृशज्वालो विद्युल्लोलार्चिरुज्ज्वलः द्वादशादित्यसदृशो युगान्ताग्निरिवापरः

Then, with flames reaching to the sky, blazing with lightning-like sparks, Resembling twelve suns, like another fire at the end of an eon,

फिर, आग की लपटें आकाश तक पहुँचने लगीं, बिजली जैसी चिंगारी से धधकती हुई, बारह सूर्यों के सदृश, एक कल्प के अंत में दूसरी आग की तरह,

क्षणेन तेन दग्धः स हिमवानभवन्नगः सधातुशिखराभोगो दीनदग्धवनौषधिः

In an instant, that fire burned the mountain Himavat, with its peaks of minerals, its withered and burned plants.

एक क्षण में, उस आग ने खनिजों की चोटियों, सूखे और जले हुए पौधों सहित हिमावत पर्वत को जला दिया।

तं दृष्ट्वा मथितं शैलं शैलराजसुता ततः भगवन्तं प्रपन्ना सा साञ्जलिप्रग्रहा स्थिता

Seeing the mountain churned, the daughter of the king of mountains, she took refuge in the Blessed One, standing with folded hands.

पर्वतों के राजा की पुत्री ने पर्वत को मथता हुआ देखकर हाथ जोड़कर भगवान की शरण ली।

उमां शर्वस्तदा दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीभावागतमार्दवाम् पितुर्दैन्यमनिच्छन्तीं प्रीत्यापश्यत्ततो गिरिम्

Seeing Uma, who had become soft due to her feminine nature, and who was unwilling to be distressed by her father, Shiva then saw the mountain with affection.

उमा को, जो अपने स्त्री स्वभाव के कारण कोमल हो गई थी और जो अपने पिता से व्यथित नहीं होना चाहती थी, देखकर शिव ने स्नेहपूर्वक पर्वत को देखा।

ततोऽभवत्पुनः सर्वः प्रकृतिस्थः सुदर्शनः प्रहृष्टविहगश्चैव प्रपुष्पितवनद्रुमः

Then all became as before, with Sudarshana, the birds delighted, and the trees in full bloom.

फिर सब कुछ पहले जैसा हो गया, सुदर्शन के साथ, पक्षी प्रसन्न थे, और पेड़ पूरी तरह खिल गए।

प्रकृतिस्थं गिरिं दृष्ट्वा प्रीता देवी महेश्वरम् उवाच सर्वभूतानां पतिं पतिमनिन्दिता

Seeing the mountain in its natural state, the goddess, the wife of the Lord, the unblamable one, the wife of all beings, said to the Lord: "O Lord, O

O Blessed One, Lord of all beings, Trident-wielding One, Great Vow-holder, A great doubt has arisen in me. It befits you to explain it to me

हे धन्य, सभी प्राणियों के स्वामी, त्रिशूलधारी, महान व्रतधारी, मेरे मन में एक महान संदेह उत्पन्न हो गया है। तुम्हें यह उचित होगा कि तुम मुझे यह बात समझाओ

किमर्थं ते ललाटे वै तृतीयं नेत्रमुत्थितम् किमर्थं च गिरिर्दग्धः सपक्षिगणकाननः

Why did the third eye appear on your forehead? And why was the mountain burned with its birds and trees?

आपके माथे पर तीसरी आँख क्यों प्रकट हुई? और पहाड़ अपने पक्षियों और पेड़ोंसमेत क्यों जल गया?

किमर्थं च पुनर्देव प्रकृतिस्थः क्षणात्कृतः तथैव द्रुमसंछन्नः कृतोऽयं ते महेश्वर

Why, O Lord, was he made to be in his natural state in an instant? And thus, O Mahesvara, this forest was made by you.

हे भगवान, उसे एक ही पल में अपनी प्राकृतिक अवस्था में क्यों बना दिया गया? और इस प्रकार, हे महेश्वर, यह वन आपके द्वारा बनाया गया था।

महेश्वर उवाच नेत्रे मे संवृते देवि त्वया बाल्यादनिन्दिते नष्टालोकस्ततो लोकः क्षणेन समपद्यत

Mahesvara said: O Goddess, when you closed my eyes, O blameless one, out of childishness, The world became blind in an instant.

महेश्वर ने कहा: हे देवी, जब तुमने बचपन में मेरी आंखें बंद कर दीं, तो दुनिया एक पल में अंधी हो गई।

नष्टादित्ये तथा लोके तमोभूते नगात्मजे तृतीयं लोचनं दीप्तं सृष्टं ते रक्षता प्रजाः

When the sun has set and the world is enveloped in darkness, O daughter of the mountain, You have created a third eye that shines brightly. Protect the creatures.

जब सूर्य अस्त हो गया और दुनिया अंधकार में डूब गई, तो हे पर्वत की बेटी, आपने एक तीसरी आंख बनाई जो चमकती है। प्राणियों की रक्षा करें.

तस्य चाक्ष्णो महत्तेजो येनायं मथितो गिरिः त्वत्प्रियार्थं च मे देवि प्रकृतिस्थः क्षणात्कृतः

And that eye of his has great power, by which this mountain was shattered. And for your sake, O Goddess, I have been made to be in my natural state in an instant.

और उसकी उस आंख में बड़ी शक्ति है, जिस से यह पर्वत टूट गया। और हे देवी, आपकी खातिर, मुझे एक पल में अपनी प्राकृतिक अवस्था में ला दिया गया है।

उमोवाच भगवन्केन ते वक्त्रं चन्द्रवत्प्रियदर्शनम् पूर्वं तथैव श्रीकान्तमुत्तरं पश्चिमं तथा

Umovach O Lord, by whom is your face, like the moon, so pleasant to behold? In the same way, the eastern, the western, and the northern.

उमोवच हे प्रभु, चंद्रमा के समान आपका चेहरा किसको देखने में इतना सुखद लगता है? इसी प्रकार, पूर्वी, पश्चिमी और उत्तरी।

दक्षिणं च मुखं रौद्रं केनोर्ध्वं कपिला जटाः केन कण्ठश्च ते नीलो बर्हिबर्हनिभः कृतः

Why is your face to the right, terrible, with matted locks of tawny hair standing on end? Why is your throat blue, like the feathers of a peacock?

आपका दाहिनी ओर का चेहरा भयानक, उलझे हुए भूरे बालों से घिरा हुआ क्यों है? तुम्हारा गला मोर के पंख के समान नीला क्यों है?

हस्ते चैतत्पिनाकं ते सततं केन तिष्ठति जटिलो ब्रह्मचारी च किमर्थमसि नित्यदा

And this Pinaka in your hand, how does it always remain there? You are a matted-hair ascetic, a celibate, why are you always so?

और यह जो पिनाका तुम्हारे हाथ में है, यह सदैव कैसे रहता है? आप जटाधारी तपस्वी हैं, ब्रह्मचारी हैं, आप सदैव ऐसे ही क्यों रहते हैं?

एतं मे संशयं सर्वं वद भूतपतेऽनघ सधर्मचारिणी चाहं भक्ता चेति वृषध्वज

O Lord of beings, O sinless one, please tell me all this doubt of mine. And I am a follower of the same Dharma, and a devotee, O Bull-bannered One

हे प्राणियों के स्वामी, हे निष्पाप, कृपया मुझे मेरा यह सब संदेह बताएं। और हे बैल-बैनर वाले, मैं उसी धर्म का अनुयायी और भक्त हूं

एवमुक्तः स भगवाञ्शैलपुत्र्या पिनाकधृक् तस्या वृत्त्या च बुद्ध्या च प्रीतिमानभवत्प्रभुः

Thus addressed by the daughter of the mountain, the lord holding the Pināka bow, was pleased with her conduct and intellect.

पर्वत की पुत्री द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर पिनाक धनुष धारण करने वाले भगवान उसके आचरण और बुद्धि से प्रसन्न हुए।

ततस्तामब्रवीद्देवः सुभगे श्रूयतामिति हेतुभिर्यैर्ममैतानि रूपाणि रुचिरानने

Then the god said to her, "O fortunate one, listen." "By those causes, O beautiful-faced one, these forms of mine are
