संजय उवाच अथ वीरो महेष्वासो मत्तवारणविक्रमः समादाय महच्चापं मत्तवारणवारणम्

Sañjaya said: The brave and great archer was like a crazy elephant in his valour. He grasped a giant bow that was capable of restraining a crazy elephant.

संजय ने कहा: वह बहादुर और महान धनुर्धर अपनी वीरता में एक पागल हाथी के समान था। उसने एक विशाल धनुष पकड़ लिया जो एक पागल हाथी को रोकने में सक्षम था।

विधुन्वानो धनुः श्रेष्ठं द्रावयाणो महारथान् पृतनां पाण्डवेयानां पातयानो महारथः

He brandished that best of bows and drove away the mahāratha-s. The mahāratha slaughtered the army of the Pāṇḍaveya-s.

उन्होंने सर्वश्रेष्ठ धनुष लहराया और महारथियों को खदेड़ दिया। महारथ ने पाण्डवों की सेना का संहार कर दिया।

निमित्तानि निमित्तज्ञः सर्वतो वीक्ष्य वीर्यवान् प्रतपन्तमनीकानि द्रोणः पुत्रमभाषत

The valiant one was skilled in reading portents and glanced in every direction. Having tormented the soldiers, Droṇa addressed his son.

वह शूरवीर दृष्टांत पढ़ने में कुशल था और हर दिशा में नजर दौड़ाता था। सैनिकों को पीड़ा पहुँचाकर द्रोण ने अपने पुत्र को संबोधित किया।

अयं स दिवसस्तात यत्र पार्थो महारथः जिघांसुः समरे भीष्मं परं यत्नं करिष्यति

"O son! This is the day when mahāratha Pārtha will try his utmost to slay Bhīṣma in battle.

"हे पुत्र! यही वह दिन है जब महारथ पार्थ युद्ध में भीष्म को मारने की पूरी कोशिश करेगा।

उत्पतन्ति हि मे बाणा धनुः प्रस्फुरतीव मे योगमस्त्राणि गच्छन्ति क्रूरे मे वर्तते मतिः

My arrows are rising up and my bow is outstretched. But when I try to fix my weapons, they are falling off. My mind is without cheer.

मेरे बाण ऊपर उठ रहे हैं और मेरा धनुष बढ़ा हुआ है। लेकिन जब मैं अपने हथियारों को ठीक करने की कोशिश करता हूं, तो वे गिर रहे हैं। मेरा मन प्रसन्न नहीं है.

दिक्षु शान्तासु घोराणि व्याहरन्ति मृगद्विजाः नीचैर्गृध्रा निलीयन्ते भारतानां चमूं प्रति

The peaceful directions have turned terrible and birds and animals are wandering around. Inferior vultures are swooping down towards the army of the Bhārata-s.

शान्त दिशाएँ भयानक हो गयी हैं और पशु-पक्षी इधर-उधर भटक रहे हैं। तुच्छ गिद्ध भरत-सेना की ओर झपट रहे हैं।

नष्टप्रभ इवादित्यः सर्वतो लोहिता दिशः रसते व्यथते भूमिरनुष्टनति वाहनम्

The sun has lost its splendour and all the directions have turned red. The earth seems to be suffering and the mounts seem to have been destroyed.

सूर्य ने अपना तेज खो दिया है और सभी दिशाएँ लाल हो गई हैं। पृथ्वी पीड़ित प्रतीत होती है और पर्वत नष्ट हो गये प्रतीत होते हैं।

कङ्का गृध्रा बलाकाश्च व्याहरन्ति मुहुर्मुहुः शिवाश्चाशिवनिर्घोषा वेदयन्त्यो महद्भयम्

Herons, vultures and cranes are repeatedly shrieking. Jackals are howling in inauspicious tones and this signifies a great calamity.

बगुले, गिद्ध और सारस बार-बार चिल्ला रहे हैं। सियार अशुभ स्वर में चिल्ला रहे हैं और यह किसी बड़ी विपत्ति का संकेत है।

पपात महती चोल्का मध्येनादित्यमण्डलात् सकबन्धश्च परिघो भानुमावृत्य तिष्ठति

Giant meteors are falling down from the centre of the sun's disc. The headless torso of parigha is stationed, covering the sun.

विशाल उल्काएँ सूर्य की डिस्क के केंद्र से नीचे गिर रही हैं। परिघा का बिना सिर वाला धड़ सूर्य को ढकता हुआ खड़ा है।

परिवेषस्तथा घोरश्चन्द्रभास्करयोरभूत् वेदयानो भयं घोरं राज्ञां देहावकर्तनम्

The discs of the sun and the moon have become terrible. They signify a terrible danger, pertaining to the mangling of the bodies of kings.

सूर्य और चंद्रमा के चक्र भयानक हो गए हैं। वे राजाओं के शवों को क्षत-विक्षत करने से संबंधित एक भयानक खतरे का संकेत देते हैं।

देवतायतनस्थाश्च कौरवेन्द्रस्य देवताः कम्पन्ते च हसन्ते च नृत्यन्ति च रुदन्ति च

In the temples of the Indra among the Kaurava-s, the gods are trembling, laughing, dancing and weeping.

कौरवों के बीच इंद्र के मंदिरों में देवता कांप रहे हैं, हंस रहे हैं, नाच रहे हैं और रो रहे हैं।

अपसव्यं ग्रहाश्चक्रुरलक्ष्माणं निशाकरम् अवाक्शिराश्च भगवानुदतिष्ठत चन्द्रमाः

The planets are circling inauspiciously, keeping the moon to the left. O illustrious one! The moon is rising with its crescent inverted.

ग्रह चंद्रमा को बायीं ओर रखकर अशुभ परिक्रमा कर रहे हैं। हे महामहिम! चंद्रमा उल्टे अर्धचंद्र के साथ उदित हो रहा है।

वपूंषि च नरेन्द्राणां विगतानीव लक्षये धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु न च भ्राजन्ति दंशिताः

The bodies of the kings seem to be destroyed. Though they are armoured, the soldiers of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra are no longer radiant.

राजाओं के शरीर नष्ट हो गये प्रतीत होते हैं। यद्यपि वे बख्तरबंद हैं, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के सैनिक अब तेजस्वी नहीं हैं।

सेनयोरुभयोश्चैव समन्ताच्छ्रूयते महान् पाञ्चजन्यस्य निर्घोषो गाण्डीवस्य च निस्वनः

A great sound has arisen amidst both the armies, because of Pāñcajanya's roar and Gāṇḍīva's sound.

पाञ्चजन्य की गर्जना और गाण्डीव की ध्वनि से दोनों सेनाओं में महान् ध्वनि उत्पन्न हो गई।

ध्रुवमास्थाय बीभत्सुरुत्तमास्त्राणि संयुगे अपास्यान्यान्रणे योधानभ्यस्यति पितामहम्

It is certain that Bībhatsu will use supreme weapons in this battle. He will avoid all the others in the encounter and advance towards the grandfather.

यह निश्चित है कि बिभात्सु इस युद्ध में सर्वोच्च हथियारों का उपयोग करेगा। वह मुठभेड़ में अन्य सभी से बच जाएगा और दादा की ओर आगे बढ़ेगा।

हृष्यन्ति रोमकूपानि सीदतीव च मे मनः चिन्तयित्वा महाबाहो भीष्मार्जुनसमागमम्

The pores in my body are contracting. My mind is weakening. O mighty-armed one! I am thinking about the encounter between Bhīṣma and Arjuna.

मेरे शरीर के छिद्र सिकुड़ रहे हैं। मेरा दिमाग कमजोर हो रहा है. हे महाबाहु! मैं भीष्म और अर्जुन के बीच मुठभेड़ के बारे में सोच रहा हूं।

तं चैव निकृतिप्रज्ञं पाञ्चाल्यं पापचेतसम् पुरस्कृत्य रणे पार्थो भीष्मस्यायोधनं गतः

Pārtha is conversant with deceit. He will place the evil-minded Pāñcāla at the forefront of the battle and advance to fight with Bhīṣma.

पार्थ छल से परिचित है. वह दुष्ट मन वाले पंचाल को युद्ध में सबसे आगे रखेगा और भीष्म से युद्ध करने के लिए आगे बढ़ेगा।

अब्रवीच्च पुरा भीष्मो नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम् स्त्री ह्येषा विहिता धात्रा दैवाच्च स पुनः पुमान्

Bhīṣma had earlier said that he would not kill Śikhaṇḍī. The creator made him a woman and he later became a man through destiny.

भीष्म ने पहले कहा था कि वह शिखंडी को नहीं मारेंगे। विधाता ने उसे स्त्री बनाया और बाद में नियति से वह पुरुष बन गया।

अमङ्गल्यध्वजश्चैव याज्ञसेनिर्महारथः न चामङ्गलकेतोः स प्रहरेदापगासुतः

Yajñasena's mahāratha son bears an inauspicious mark on his standard. The son of the one who goes to the ocean will not strike someone who bears an inauspicious mark on his standard.

यज्ञसेन के महारथ पुत्र के ध्वज पर एक अशुभ चिन्ह अंकित है। जो समुद्र में जाता है उसका पुत्र किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति पर प्रहार नहीं करेगा जिसके ध्वज पर कोई अशुभ चिह्न हो।

एतद्विचिन्तयानस्य प्रज्ञा सीदति मे भृशम् अद्यैव तु रणे पार्थः कुरुवृद्धमुपाद्रवत्

Having thought of all these things, my mind is severely distressed. In the battle today, Pārtha will attack the aged one of the Kuru lineage.

इन सब बातों को सोच-सोचकर मेरा मन अत्यंत व्यथित है। आज के युद्ध में पार्थ कुरु वंश के वृद्ध पर आक्रमण करेगा।

युधिष्ठिरस्य च क्रोधो भीष्मार्जुनसमागमः मम चास्त्राभिसंरम्भः प्रजानामशुभं ध्रुवम्

Yudhiṣṭhira's anger, the encounter between Bhīṣma and Arjuna and the rage of my weapons in battle certainly portend ill for all subjects.

युधिष्ठिर का क्रोध, भीष्म और अर्जुन के बीच मुठभेड़ और युद्ध में मेरे हथियारों का क्रोध निश्चित रूप से सभी विषयों के लिए बुरा संकेत देता है।

मनस्वी बलवाञ्शूरः कृतास्त्रो दृढविक्रमः दूरपाती दृढेषुश्च निमित्तज्ञश्च पाण्डवः

Pāṇḍava is spirited, powerful and brave. He is skilled in the use of weapons and is firm in his valour. He can shoot from a great distance and can strike powerfully. He is skilled in understanding the signs.

पांडव उत्साही, शक्तिशाली और बहादुर हैं। वह अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल तथा पराक्रम में दृढ़ है। वह बहुत दूर से गोली चला सकता है और शक्तिशाली वार कर सकता है। वह संकेतों को समझने में कुशल है।

अजेयः समरे चैव देवैरपि सवासवैः बलवान्बुद्धिमांश्चैव जितक्लेशो युधां वरः

He is invincible in battle, even by the gods, with Vāsava. He is strong and intelligent. He has conquered exhaustion. He is supreme among warriors.

वह वासव के साथ युद्ध में देवताओं के द्वारा भी अजेय है। वह मजबूत और बुद्धिमान है. उसने थकावट पर विजय पा ली है। वह योद्धाओं में सर्वोच्च है।

विजयी च रणे नित्यं भैरवास्त्रश्च पाण्डवः तस्य मार्गं परिहरन्द्रुतं गच्छ यतव्रतम्

Pāṇḍava possesses terrible weapons and is always victorious in battle. Avoid his path and go to the spot where the one who is rigid in his vows is stationed.

पांडवों के पास भयानक हथियार थे और वे युद्ध में हमेशा विजयी होते थे। उसके मार्ग से बचो और उस स्थान पर जाओ जहाँ वह अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ है।

पश्य चैतन्महाबाहो वैशसं समुपस्थितम् हेमचित्राणि शूराणां महान्ति च शुभानि च

O mightyarmed one! Behold the visage of what is about to transpire. The armours of the brave ones are decorated with gold. They are expensive and beautiful.

हे पराक्रमी! जो घटित होने वाला है उसका दृश्य देखो। वीरों के कवच सोने से सुशोभित हैं। वे महंगे और सुंदर हैं.

कवचान्यवदीर्यन्ते शरैः संनतपर्वभिः छिद्यन्ते च ध्वजाग्राणि तोमराणि धनूंषि च

These shields will be shattered with straight-tufted arrows. The tops of the standards, the javelins and the bows will be fragmented.

ये ढालें ​​सीधे नुकीले बाणों से चूर-चूर हो जायेंगी। ध्वजों के शीर्ष, भाले और धनुष खंडित हो जायेंगे।

प्रासाश्च विमलास्तीक्ष्णाः शक्त्यश्च कनकोज्ज्वलाः वैजयन्त्यश्च नागानां संक्रुद्धेन किरीटिना

There are polished and sharp spears and lances blazing in gold. There are pennants on elephants and all these will be destroyed by the angry Kirīṭī.

वहाँ सोने से चमकते हुए चमकते हुए और नुकीले भाले और भाले हैं। हाथियों पर पताकाएं हैं और ये सभी क्रोधित किरीटी द्वारा नष्ट कर दिए जाएंगे।

नायं संरक्षितुं कालः प्राणान्पुत्रोपजीविभिः याहि स्वर्गं पुरस्कृत्य यशसे विजयाय च

O son! This is not the time when dependents should seek to protect their lives. Go, placing heaven at the forefront, and fame and victory.

हे वत्स यह वह समय नहीं है जब आश्रितों को अपने जीवन की रक्षा करने का प्रयास करना चाहिए। स्वर्ग और यश तथा विजय को सबसे आगे रखकर जाओ।

हयनागरथावर्तां महाघोरां सुदुस्तराम् रथेन संग्रामनदीं तरत्येष कपिध्वजः

The whirlpool of horses, elephants and chariots is extremely terrible and is difficult to cross. The one with the ape on his banner is crossing the river of battle on his chariot.

घोड़ों, हाथियों और रथों का भँवर अत्यंत भयानक है और उसे पार करना कठिन है। जिसके ध्वज पर वानर है वह अपने रथ पर युद्ध की नदी पार कर रहा है।

ब्रह्मण्यता दमो दानं तपश्च चरितं महत् इहैव दृश्यते राज्ञो भ्राता यस्य धनंजयः

Regard for brāhmana-s, self-control, generosity, austerities and greatness in conduct—these can be seen in the king. Dhanañjayā is his brother.

ब्राह्मणों के प्रति आदर, संयम, उदारता, तपस्या और आचरण में महानता - ये राजा में देखे जा सकते हैं। धनंजय उनके भाई हैं।

भीमसेनश्च बलवान्माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ वासुदेवश्च वार्ष्णेयो यस्य नाथो व्यवस्थितः

Bhīmasena is powerful and so are the Pāṇḍava-s who are Mādrī's sons. Vārṣṇeya Vāsudeva is stationed as their protector.

भीमसेन शक्तिशाली हैं और पांडव भी, जो माद्री के पुत्र हैं। वार्ष्णेय वासुदेव उनके रक्षक के रूप में तैनात हैं।

तस्यैष मन्युप्रभवो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्मतेः तपोदग्धशरीरस्य कोपो दहति भारतान्

The evil-minded sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra are overcome by anger. While he has scorched his body through austerities, the Bhārata-s have been scorched through anger.

धृतराष्ट्र के दुष्ट-मन वाले पुत्र क्रोध से पराजित हो जाते हैं। जहां उन्होंने तपस्या से अपने शरीर को झुलसा लिया है, वहीं भरत क्रोध से झुलस गये हैं।

एष संदृश्यते पार्थो वासुदेवव्यपाश्रयः दारयन्सर्वसैन्यानि धार्तराष्ट्राणि सर्वशः

Pārtha can be seen, with Vāsudeva as his refuge. He is shattering all the soldiers of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, in every direction.

पार्थ को वासुदेव के आश्रय के रूप में देखा जा सकता है। वह धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के सभी सैनिकों को हर दिशा में नष्ट कर रहा है।

एतदालोक्यते सैन्यं क्षोभ्यमाणं किरीटिना महोर्मिनद्धं सुमहत्तिमिनेव नदीमुखम्

Kirīṭī can be seen to be agitating the soldiers, like a giant whale agitating large fish at the mouth of a river.

किरीटी को सैनिकों को उत्तेजित करते हुए देखा जा सकता है, जैसे एक विशाल व्हेल नदी के मुहाने पर बड़ी मछली को उत्तेजित कर रही हो।

हाहाकिलकिलाशब्दाः श्रूयन्ते च चमूमुखे याहि पाञ्चालदायादमहं यास्ये युधिष्ठिरम्

Sounds of lamentation and woe can be heard at the head of the army. Go and confront the son of Pāñcāla. I will go and confront Yudhiṣṭhira.

सेना के शीर्ष पर विलाप और शोक की ध्वनियाँ सुनी जा सकती हैं। जाओ और पंचाल के पुत्र का सामना करो। मैं जाऊंगा और युधिष्ठिर का सामना करूंगा।

दुर्लभं ह्यन्तरं राज्ञो व्यूहस्यामिततेजसः समुद्रकुक्षिप्रतिमं सर्वतोऽतिरथैः स्थितैः

The centre of the infinitely energetic king's vyūha is difficult to penetrate. It is like the interior of the ocean and atiratha-s are stationed in every direction.

असीम ऊर्जावान राजा के व्यूह के केंद्र को भेदना कठिन है। यह समुद्र के आंतरिक भाग की तरह है और हर दिशा में अतिरथ तैनात हैं।

सात्यकिश्चाभिमन्युश्च धृष्टद्युम्नवृकोदरौ परिरक्षन्ति राजानं यमौ च मनुजेश्वरम्

Sātyaki, Abhimanyu, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Vṛkodara and the twins, lords among men, are protecting the king.

सात्यकि, अभिमन्यु, धृष्टद्युम्न, वृकोदर और जुड़वाँ बच्चे, मनुष्यों के स्वामी, राजा की रक्षा कर रहे हैं।

उपेन्द्रसदृशः श्यामो महाशाल इवोद्गतः एष गच्छत्यनीकानि द्वितीय इव फल्गुनः

He is like Upendrā and is dark. He is as tall as a giant śala tree. He is advancing amidst the soldiers, like a second Phālguna.

वह उपेन्द्र जैसा है और काला है। वह एक विशाल शाल वृक्ष के समान ऊँचा है। वह दूसरे फाल्गुन की भाँति सैनिकों के बीच में आगे बढ़ रहा है।

उत्तमास्त्राणि चादत्स्व गृहीत्वान्यन्महद्धनुः पार्श्वतो याहि राजानं युध्यस्व च वृकोदरम्

Take up your supreme weapons and grasp your giant bow. Advance against King Pārṣata and fight with Vṛkodara.

अपने सर्वोच्च हथियार उठाओ और अपना विशाल धनुष पकड़ो। राजा परशात के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ें और वृकोदर के साथ युद्ध करें।

को हि नेच्छेत्प्रियं पुत्रं जीवन्तं शाश्वतीः समाः क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य ततस्त्वा विनियुज्महे

Who does not wish that his beloved son may live for an eternal period? However, placing the dharma of kṣatriya-s at the forefront, I am employing you in this task.

कौन नहीं चाहता कि उसका प्रिय पुत्र अनन्त काल तक जीवित रहे? हालाँकि, क्षत्रिय-धर्म को सबसे आगे रखते हुए, मैं आपको इस कार्य में नियुक्त कर रहा हूँ।

एष चापि रणे भीष्मो दहते वै महाचमूम् युद्धे सुसदृशस्तात यमस्य वरुणस्य च

In this battle, Bhīṣma is scorching the great army. O son! In battle, he is the equal of Yāma and Vāruṇa.

इस युद्ध में भीष्म विशाल सेना को झुलसा रहे हैं। हे वत्स युद्ध में, वह यम और वरुण के बराबर है।
