संजय उवाच दृष्ट्वा भीष्मं रणे क्रुद्धं पाण्डवैरभिसंवृतम् यथा मेघैर्महाराज तपान्ते दिवि भास्करम्

Sañjaya said: O great king! Bhīṣma was angry in the battle. O great king! He was surrounded by the Pāṇḍava-s, like clouds in the sky surrounding the sun after summer is over.

संजय ने कहा: हे महान राजा! युद्ध में भीष्म क्रोधित थे। हे महान राजा! वह पाण्डवों से इस प्रकार घिरा हुआ था, जैसे ग्रीष्म ऋतु समाप्त होने के बाद आकाश में बादल सूर्य को घेर लेते हैं।

दुर्योधनो महाराज दुःशासनमभाषत एष शूरो महेष्वासो भीष्मः शत्रुनिषूदनः

Duryodhana saw this and he addressed Duḥśāsana. "This brave and great archer, Bhīṣma, is the destroyer of enemies.

दुर्योधन ने यह देखा और उसने दुःशासन को संबोधित किया। "यह बहादुर और महान धनुर्धर, भीष्म, शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाला है।

छादितः पाण्डवैः शूरैः समन्ताद्भरतर्षभ तस्य कार्यं त्वया वीर रक्षणं सुमहात्मनः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! He has been covered on all sides by the brave Pāṇḍava-s.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! वह वीर पाण्डवों द्वारा सब ओर से ढका हुआ है।

रक्ष्यमाणो हि समरे भीष्मोऽस्माकं पितामहः निहन्यात्समरे यत्तान्पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवैः सह

In this battle, protect Bhīṣma, our grandfather, so that he can kill the Pāñcāla-s and the Pāṇḍava-s in this encounter.

इस युद्ध में हमारे पितामह भीष्म की रक्षा करें, ताकि वह इस मुठभेड़ में पंचालों और पांडवों को मार सकें।

तत्र कार्यमहं मन्ये भीष्मस्यैवाभिरक्षणम् गोप्ता ह्येष महेष्वासो भीष्मोऽस्माकं पितामहः

I think that it is our duty to protect Bhīṣma. Bhīṣma, the great archer, is our protector and is also our grandfather.

मैं सोचता हूं कि भीष्म की रक्षा करना हमारा कर्तव्य है। महान धनुर्धर भीष्म हमारे रक्षक हैं और हमारे पितामह भी हैं।

स भवान्सर्वसैन्येन परिवार्य पितामहम् समरे दुष्करं कर्म कुर्वाणं परिरक्षतु

With all your soldiers, surround the grandfather. If you protect him, you will perform a difficult task in this battle."

तुम अपने समस्त सैनिकों के साथ पितामह को घेर लो। यदि तुम उसकी रक्षा करोगे तो तुम इस युद्ध में एक कठिन कार्य करोगे।”

एवमुक्तस्तु समरे पुत्रो दुःशासनस्तव परिवार्य स्थितो भीष्मं सैन्येन महता वृतः

In the encounter, having been thus addressed, your son, Duḥśāsana, stationed himself around Bhīṣma, surrounding him with a large army.

मुठभेड़ में, इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर, आपका पुत्र दुःशासन, भीष्म के चारों ओर एक बड़ी सेना के साथ खड़ा हो गया।

ततः शतसहस्रेण हयानां सुबलात्मजः विमलप्रासहस्तानामृष्टितोमरधारिणाम्

Subala's son had many hundreds and thousands of horses. The riders had polished spears and wielded swords and spikes.

सुबाला के पुत्र के पास सैकड़ों और हजारों घोड़े थे। सवारों के पास पॉलिश किए हुए भाले थे और वे तलवारें और कीलें लहरा रहे थे।

दर्पितानां सुवेगानां बलस्थानां पताकिनाम् शिक्षितैर्युद्धकुशलैरुपेतानां नरोत्तमैः

They were proud and extremely swift. This was a force with standards. These supreme among men were trained and skilled in battle.

वे घमंडी और बेहद तेज़ थे। यह मानकों वाली ताकत थी. ये श्रेष्ठ पुरुष युद्ध में प्रशिक्षित और कुशल थे।

नकुलं सहदेवं च धर्मराजं च पाण्डवम् न्यवारयन्नरश्रेष्ठं परिवार्य समन्ततः

They surrounded Nākula, Sahadeva and Pāṇḍava Dharmarāja from every direction and repulsed those best of men.

उन्होंने नकुल, सहदेव और पांडव धर्मराज को हर दिशा से घेर लिया और उन श्रेष्ठ पुरुषों को खदेड़ दिया।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा शूराणां हयसादिनाम् अयुतं प्रेषयामास पाण्डवानां निवारणे

King Duryodhana sent ten thousand brave horse-riders to restrain the Pāṇḍava-s. They penetrated with great force, like Gāruḍa-s advancing to do battle.

राजा दुर्योधन ने पांडवों को रोकने के लिए दस हजार वीर घुड़सवार भेजे। वे बड़ी ताकत से घुसे, जैसे गरुड़ युद्ध करने के लिए आगे बढ़ रहे हों।

तैः प्रविष्टैर्महावेगैर्गरुत्मद्भिरिवाहवे खुराहता धरा राजंश्चकम्पे च ननाद च

O king! The earth was struck with the hooves and trembled because of the sound.

हे राजा! खुरों के प्रहार से पृथ्वी काँप उठी और उसके शब्द से काँप उठी।

खुरशब्दश्च सुमहान्वाजिनां शुश्रुवे तदा महावंशवनस्येव दह्यमानस्य पर्वते

A great noise from the hooves of the horses could be heard then. It was like a large forest of bamboos being burnt on a mountain.

तभी घोड़ों की टापों का बड़ा शोर सुनाई दिया। यह ऐसा था जैसे किसी पहाड़ पर बाँस का एक बड़ा जंगल जलाया जा रहा हो।

उत्पतद्भिश्च तैस्तत्र समुद्धूतं महद्रजः दिवाकरपथं प्राप्य छादयामास भास्करम्

As they advanced there, a great cloud of dust arose. It rose up into the path of the sun and shrouded the sun.

जैसे ही वे वहाँ आगे बढ़े, धूल का एक बड़ा बादल उठ गया। वह सूर्य के मार्ग में ऊपर उठी और सूर्य को ढक लिया।

वेगवद्भिर्हयैस्तैस्तु क्षोभितं पाण्डवं बलम् निपतद्भिर्महावेगैर्हंसैरिव महत्सरः हेषतां चैव शब्देन न प्राज्ञायत किंचन

The army of the Pāṇḍava-s was agitated because of the force of these horses, as if a flock of swans had descended onto a large lake with great force. Nothing could be heard because of the sounds of neighing.

इन घोड़ों के बल से पांडवों की सेना इस प्रकार घबरा गई, मानो हंसों का झुंड बड़ी ताकत के साथ किसी बड़े तालाब पर उतर आया हो। हिनहिनाने की आवाज के कारण कुछ भी सुनाई नहीं दे रहा था।

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ प्रत्यघ्नंस्तरसा वेगं समरे हयसादिनाम्

In that battle, King Yudhiṣṭhira and the Pāṇḍava-s who were Mādrī's sons spiritedly checked the force of those horse-riders.

उस युद्ध में राजा युधिष्ठिर तथा माद्री के पुत्र पाण्डवों ने उत्साहपूर्वक उन घुड़सवारों की शक्ति को रोका।

उद्वृत्तस्य महाराज प्रावृट्कालेन पूर्यतः पौर्णमास्यामम्बुवेगं यथा वेला महोदधेः

O great king! This was like how the shoreline checks the forceful waves of the great ocean on the night of the full moon, when the waters are full because of the rains.

हे महान राजा! यह वैसा ही था जैसे पूर्णिमा की रात, जब बारिश के कारण पानी भर जाता है, तो तटरेखा विशाल महासागर की तेज़ लहरों को रोकती है।

ततस्ते रथिनो राजञ्शरैः संनतपर्वभिः न्यकृन्तन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि कायेभ्यो हयसादिनाम्

O king! The rāṭha-s used straight-tufted arrows to sever the heads of the horse-riders from their bodies.

हे राजा! रथों ने घुड़सवारों के सिर को उनके शरीर से अलग करने के लिए सीधे नुकीले तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

ते निपेतुर्महाराज निहता दृढधन्विभिः नागैरिव महानागा यथा स्युर्गिरिगह्वरे

O great king! They were slain and brought down by those who wielded firm bows. It was like elephants killed by mighty elephants and hurled into mountainous caverns.

हे महान राजा! वे दृढ़ धनुषधारी लोगों द्वारा मारे गये और मार गिराये गये। यह वैसा ही था जैसे शक्तिशाली हाथियों ने हाथियों को मार डाला हो और पहाड़ी गुफाओं में फेंक दिया हो।

तेऽपि प्रासैः सुनिशितैः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः न्यकृन्तन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि विचरन्तो दिशो दश

They roamed around in the ten directions and used extremely sharp javelins and straight-tufted arrows to slice off the heads.

वे दसों दिशाओं में घूमते रहे और सिरों को काटने के लिए अत्यंत तीखे भालों और सीधे नुकीले बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

अत्यासन्ना हयारोहा ऋष्टिभिर्भरतर्षभ अच्छिनन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि फलानीव महाद्रुमात्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! The horse-riders were struck by swords. Their heads fell down, like fruit from large trees.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! घुड़सवारों को तलवारों से मारा गया। उनके सिर बड़े पेड़ों के फल की तरह नीचे गिर गये।

ससादिनो हया राजंस्तत्र तत्र निषूदिताः पतिताः पात्यमानाश्च शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

O king! Horses and their riders were seen to be slain there. They fell down and were falling down, in hundreds and thousands.

हे राजा! वहाँ घोड़े और उनके सवार मारे गये दिखाई दिये। वे सैकड़ों-हजारों की संख्या में गिर पड़े और गिरते जा रहे थे।

वध्यमाना हयास्ते तु प्राद्रवन्त भयार्दिताः यथा सिंहान्समासाद्य मृगाः प्राणपरायणाः

Having been thus slaughtered, the horses were overcome by fear and fled. It was like deer trying to protect their lives at the arrival of a lion.

इस प्रकार मारे जाने के बाद, घोड़े डर के मारे दूर हो गए और भाग गए। यह वैसा ही था जैसे शेर के आने पर हिरण अपनी जान बचाने की कोशिश करते हैं।

पाण्डवास्तु महाराज जित्वा शत्रून्महाहवे दध्मुः शङ्खांश्च भेरीश्च ताडयामासुराहवे

O great king! In that great battle, the Pāṇḍava-s vanquished the enemy. Having driven the enemy away in the battle, they blew on their conch shells and sounded their drums.

हे महान राजा! उस महान युद्ध में पांडवों ने शत्रु को परास्त कर दिया। युद्ध में शत्रु को खदेड़कर उन्होंने शंख बजाये और नगाड़े बजाए।

ततो दुर्योधनो दृष्ट्वा दीनं सैन्यमवस्थितम् अब्रवीद्भरतश्रेष्ठ मद्रराजमिदं वचः

In the midst of the soldiers, Duryodhana was seen to be distressed. O best of the Bhārata lineage! He spoke these words to the king of Madra.

सैनिकों के बीच में दुर्योधन व्यथित नजर आ रहा था. हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! ये बातें उन्होंने मद्र देश के राजा से कहीं।

एष पाण्डुसुतो ज्येष्ठो जित्वा मातुल मामकान् पश्यतां नो महाबाहो सेनां द्रावयते बली

"This eldest son of Pāṇḍu has vanquished my maternal uncle. O mighty-armed one! While you have looked on, the powerful one has driven my soldiers away.

"पांडु के इस ज्येष्ठ पुत्र ने मेरे मामा को परास्त कर दिया है। हे महाबाहु! जब तक तुमने देखा, उस शक्तिशाली ने मेरे सैनिकों को भगा दिया है।"

तं वारय महाबाहो वेलेव मकरालयम् त्वं हि संश्रूयसेऽत्यर्थमसह्यबलविक्रमः

O mighty-armed one! Repulse him, the way the shoreline beats back the abode of makara-s. On account of your strength and valour, you are known to be irresistible."

हे महाबाहु! उसे वैसे ही विकर्षित करो, जैसे तटरेखा मकर-एस के निवास को पीछे धकेलती है। अपनी ताकत और वीरता के कारण आप अप्रतिरोध्य माने जाते हैं।”

पुत्रस्य तव तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा शल्यः प्रतापवान् प्रययौ रथवंशेन यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः

Having heard the words of your son, the powerful Śalya advanced with a large number of chariots to the spot where King Yudhiṣṭhira was stationed.

आपके पुत्र के वचन सुनकर महाबली शल्य बड़ी संख्या में रथों के साथ उस स्थान की ओर बढ़े, जहाँ राजा युधिष्ठिर ठहरे हुए थे।

तदापतद्वै सहसा शल्यस्य सुमहद्बलम् महौघवेगं समरे वारयामास पाण्डवः

Śalya suddenly descended with an extremely large force, with the thrust of the great ocean. Pāṇḍava countered him in that battle.

शल्य अचानक विशाल सागर के झोंके के साथ अत्यंत विशाल बल के साथ नीचे उतरे। उस युद्ध में पांडवों ने उसका प्रतिकार किया।

मद्रराजं च समरे धर्मराजो महारथः दशभिः सायकैस्तूर्णमाजघान स्तनान्तरे नकुलः सहदेवश्च त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः

In that encounter, mahāratha Dharmarāja used ten arrows to swiftly strike the king of Madra between the breasts. Nākula and Sahadeva struck him with three arrows that were aimed straight.

उस मुठभेड़ में, महारथ धर्मराज ने मद्र के राजा की छाती के बीच तेजी से प्रहार करने के लिए दस बाणों का प्रयोग किया। नकुल और सहदेव ने उन पर सीधे लक्ष्य साधे हुए तीन बाणों से प्रहार किया।

मद्रराजोऽपि तान्सर्वानाजघान त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः युधिष्ठिरं पुनः षष्ट्या विव्याध निशितैः शरैः माद्रीपुत्रौ च संरब्धौ द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यामताडयत्

The king of Madra pierced each of them with three arrows. He again pierced Yudhiṣṭhira with sixty sharp arrows. Overcome with anger, he struck the two sons of Mādrī with two arrows.

मद्रराज ने उनमें से प्रत्येक को तीन-तीन बाणों से घायल कर दिया। उसने पुनः साठ तीखे बाणों से युधिष्ठिर को घायल कर दिया। क्रोध के वशीभूत होकर उसने माद्री के दोनों पुत्रों को दो बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

ततो भीमो महाबाहुर्दृष्ट्वा राजानमाहवे मद्रराजवशं प्राप्तं मृत्योरास्यगतं यथा अभ्यद्रवत संग्रामे युधिष्ठिरममित्रजित्

The mighty-armed Bhīmā then beheld the king in that battle. He approached the king of Madra, as if advancing into the jaws of death. The vanquisher of enemies advanced to the spot where Yudhiṣṭhira was stationed in the battle.

तब महाबाहु भीम ने उस युद्ध में राजा को देखा। वह मद्र के राजा के पास पहुँचा, मानो मौत के मुँह में जा रहा हो। शत्रुओं को पराजित करने वाला योद्धा उस स्थान पर आगे बढ़ा, जहाँ युद्ध में युधिष्ठिर तैनात थे।

ततो युद्धं महाघोरं प्रावर्तत सुदारुणम् अपरां दिशमास्थाय द्योतमाने दिवाकरे

An extremely terrible and fearful battle raged. The sun was blazing in the other direction then.

अत्यंत भयानक एवं भयानक युद्ध छिड़ गया। उस समय सूरज दूसरी दिशा में चमक रहा था।
