संजय उवाच ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा मध्यं प्राप्ते दिवाकरे श्रुतायुषमभिप्रेक्ष्य चोदयामास वाजिनः

Sañjaya said: When the sun reached the midpoint, King Yudhiṣṭhira saw Śrutāyu and urged his horses towards him.

संजय ने कहा: जब सूर्य मध्यबिंदु पर पहुंच गया, तो राजा युधिष्ठिर ने श्रुतायु को देखा और अपने घोड़ों को उसकी ओर बुलाया।

अभ्यधावत्ततो राजा श्रुतायुषमरिंदमम् विनिघ्नन्सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्नवभिर्नतपर्वभिः

The king attacked Śrutāyu, the scorcher of enemies and pierced him with nine sharp and straight-tufted arrows.

राजा ने शत्रुओं को जलाने वाले श्रुतायु पर हमला किया और उसे नौ तीखे और सीधे नुकीले बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

स संवार्य रणे राजा प्रेषितान्धर्मसूनुना शरान्सप्त महेष्वासः कौन्तेयाय समर्पयत्

But, in that encounter, the king, the great archer, countered the arrows shot by Dharma's son and struck Kaunteya with seven arrows.

लेकिन, उस मुठभेड़ में, महान धनुर्धर राजा ने धर्म के पुत्र द्वारा चलाए गए तीरों का मुकाबला किया और कौन्तेय को सात तीरों से मारा।

ते तस्य कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितमाहवे असूनिव विचिन्वन्तो देहे तस्य महात्मनः

In that battle, these penetrated his armour and drank up his blood, as if all the vital forces in the great-souled one's body had been sucked out.

उस युद्ध में, ये उसके कवच में घुस गए और उसका खून पी गए, मानो उस महान आत्मा के शरीर की सभी महत्वपूर्ण शक्तियाँ चूस ली गई हों।

पाण्डवस्तु भृशं विद्धस्तेन राज्ञा महात्मना रणे वराहकर्णेन राजानं हृदि विव्यधे

Pāṇḍava was severely wounded by the great-souled king. However, in that encounter, he pierced the king in the heart with an arrow that was like a boar's ear.

महाबली राजा द्वारा पांडव गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गये। हालाँकि, उस मुठभेड़ में, उसने एक तीर से राजा के दिल में छेद कर दिया जो सूअर के कान जैसा था।

अथापरेण भल्लेन केतुं तस्य महात्मनः रथश्रेष्ठो रथात्तूर्णं भूमौ पार्थो न्यपातयत्

With another broad-headed arrow, Pārtha, foremost among rāṭha-s, quickly brought down the great-souled one's standard from his chariot and made it fall down on the ground.

रथकारों में श्रेष्ठ पार्थ ने एक और चौड़े सिर वाले बाण से शीघ्रता से उस महारथी के ध्वज को उसके रथ से नीचे गिरा दिया और उसे भूमि पर गिरा दिया।

केतुं निपतितं दृष्ट्वा श्रुतायुः स तु पार्थिवः पाण्डवं विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णै राजन्विव्याध सप्तभिः

O king! On seeing that his standard had been brought down, King Śrutāyu pierced Pāṇḍava with seven sharp arrows.

हे राजा! यह देखकर कि अपना ध्वज गिरा दिया गया है, राजा श्रुतायु ने पांडवों को सात तीखे बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

ततः क्रोधात्प्रजज्वाल धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः यथा युगान्ते भूतानि धक्ष्यन्निव हुताशनः

At this, Yudhiṣṭhira, Dharma's son, blazed up in anger, like the fire that burns at the end of a yuga and consumes all beings.

इस पर, धर्म के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर क्रोध से भड़क उठे, जैसे युग के अंत में आग जलती है और सभी प्राणियों को भस्म कर देती है।

क्रुद्धं तु पाण्डवं दृष्ट्वा देवगन्धर्वराक्षसाः प्रविव्यथुर्महाराज व्याकुलं चाप्यभूज्जगत्

O great king! On seeing Pāṇḍava enraged, the gods, the gāndharva-s and the rākṣasa-s were pained and anxious.

हे महान राजा! पांडवों को क्रोधित देखकर देवता, गंधर्व और राक्षस दुःखी और चिंतित हो गए।

सर्वेषां चैव भूतानामिदमासीन्मनोगतम् त्रीँल्लोकानद्य संक्रुद्धो नृपोऽयं धक्ष्यतीति वै

All the beings thought that, thus enraged, the king would destroy the three worlds then.

सभी प्राणियों ने सोचा कि इस प्रकार क्रोधित होकर राजा तीनों लोकों को नष्ट कर देगा।

ऋषयश्चैव देवाश्च चक्रुः स्वस्त्ययनं महत् लोकानां नृप शान्त्यर्थं क्रोधिते पाण्डवे तदा

O king! When Pāṇḍava was thus angered, the riṣi-s and the gods uttered great words of benediction so that there might be peace in the worlds.

हे राजा! जब पांडव इस प्रकार क्रोधित हुए, तो ऋषियों और देवताओं ने आशीर्वाद के महान शब्द बोले ताकि दुनिया में शांति हो सके।

स च क्रोधसमाविष्टः सृक्किणी परिलेलिहन् दधारात्मवपुर्घोरं युगान्तादित्यसंनिभम्

He was overcome with rage and licked the corners of his mouth. His appearance was as terrible as that of the sun at the time of the destruction of a yuga.

वह गुस्से से भर गया और उसने अपने मुँह के कोनों को चाटा। उनका स्वरूप एक युग के विनाश के समय सूर्य के समान भयानक था।

ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि तावकानि विशां पते निराशान्यभवंस्तत्र जीवितं प्रति भारत

O lord of the earth! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the soldiers in your army became distressed and thought that they would no longer remain alive.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपकी सेना के सभी सैनिक दुःखी हो गये और उन्हें लगने लगा कि वे अब जीवित नहीं रहेंगे।

स तु धैर्येण तं कोपं संनिवार्य महायशाः श्रुतायुषः प्रचिच्छेद मुष्टिदेशे महद्धनुः

But the immensely famous one controlled his anger through patience. He sliced down Śrutāyu's great bow from his hand.

लेकिन बेहद मशहूर व्यक्ति ने धैर्य से अपने गुस्से पर काबू पा लिया। उन्होंने श्रुतायु का महान धनुष उसके हाथ से काट दिया।

अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं नाराचेन स्तनान्तरे निर्बिभेद रणे राजा सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः

After the bow had been sliced down, while all the soldiers looked on in that battle, the king used an iron arrow to pierce him between the breasts.

धनुष कट जाने के बाद जब सभी सैनिक युद्ध में देख रहे थे, तब राजा ने एक लोहे के बाण से उनकी छाती के बीच में छेद कर दिया।

सत्वरं चरणे राजंस्तस्य वाहान्महात्मनः निजघान शरैः क्षिप्रं सूतं च सुमहाबलः

O king! Nimble on his feet, the great-souled and extremely strong one, then used sharp arrows to kill his mounts and his charioteer.

हे राजा! अपने पैरों पर फुर्तीला, महान आत्मा वाला और बेहद ताकतवर, फिर उसने अपने घुड़सवारों और सारथी को मारने के लिए तीखे तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

हताश्वं तु रथं त्यक्त्वा दृष्ट्वा राज्ञस्तु पौरुषम् विप्रदुद्राव वेगेन श्रुतायुः समरे तदा

On witnessing the king's manliness and with his horses slain, Śrutāyu gave up his chariot and swiftly fled from the field of battle.

राजा की वीरता और उसके घोड़ों को मारे जाने पर श्रुतायु ने अपना रथ छोड़ दिया और तेजी से युद्ध के मैदान से भाग गया।

तस्मिञ्जिते महेष्वासे धर्मपुत्रेण संयुगे दुर्योधनबलं राजन्सर्वमासीत्पराङ्मुखम्

Dharma's son defeated the great archer in that encounter. O king! Because of this, all of Duryodhana's soldiers became reluctant to do battle.

उस मुकाबले में धर्म के पुत्र ने महान धनुर्धर को हरा दिया। हे राजा! इस कारण दुर्योधन के सभी सैनिक युद्ध करने के प्रति अनिच्छुक हो गये।

एतत्कृत्वा महाराज धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः व्यात्ताननो यथा कालस्तव सैन्यं जघान ह

O great king! Having accomplished this, Yudhiṣṭhira, Dharma's son, began to slaughter your soldiers, like Death with a gaping mouth.

हे महान राजा! ऐसा करके धर्मपुत्र युधिष्ठिर ने मृत्यु की भाँति मुँह फाड़े हुए आपके सैनिकों का संहार करना प्रारम्भ कर दिया।

चेकितानस्तु वार्ष्णेयो गौतमं रथिनां वरम् प्रेक्षतां सर्वसैन्यानां छादयामास सायकैः

While all the soldiers looked on, Vārṣṇeya Cekitāna enveloped Gautama, supreme among charioteers, with arrows.

जब सभी सैनिक देख रहे थे, वार्ष्णेय चेकितान ने सारथियों में श्रेष्ठ गौतम को बाणों से घेर लिया।

संनिवार्य शरांस्तांस्तु कृपः शारद्वतो युधि चेकितानं रणे यत्तं राजन्विव्याध पत्रिभिः

In that encounter, Kṛpa, Śaradvat's son, countered all those arrows. O king! Fighting with care in that battle, he pierced Cekitāna with arrows.

उस मुठभेड़ में शरद्वात के पुत्र कृप ने उन सभी बाणों का मुकाबला किया। हे राजा! उस युद्ध में सावधानी से लड़ते हुए उसने चेकितान को बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

अथापरेण भल्लेन धनुश्चिच्छेद मारिष सारथिं चास्य समरे क्षिप्रहस्तो न्यपातयत् हयांश्चास्यावधीद्राजन्नुभौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी

O venerable one! He used another broad-headed arrow to slice down his bow. Displaying his lighteness of hand in that encounter, he brought down his charioteer. O king! He killed his horses and the two charioteers who protected his flanks.

हे आदरणीय! उसने अपने धनुष को काटने के लिए एक और चौड़े सिर वाले तीर का इस्तेमाल किया। उस मुठभेड़ में अपने हाथ की सहजता दिखाते हुए, उन्होंने अपने सारथी को नीचे गिरा दिया। हे राजा! उसने उसके घोड़ों और उसके पार्श्व की रक्षा करने वाले दो सारथियों को मार डाला।

सोऽवप्लुत्य रथात्तूर्णं गदां जग्राह सात्वतः स तया वीरघातिन्या गदया गदिनां वरः गौतमस्य हयान्हत्वा सारथिं च न्यपातयत्

Sātvata swiftly leapt down from his chariot and grabbed a club. With that club, capable of killing heroes, that supreme among wielders of clubs killed Gautama's horses and brought down his charioteer.

सात्वत तेजी से अपने रथ से नीचे कूदे और एक गदा पकड़ ली। वीरों को मारने में सक्षम उस गदा से गदाधारियों में श्रेष्ठ उस गदा ने गौतम के घोड़ों को मार डाला और उनके सारथी को नीचे गिरा दिया।

भूमिष्ठो गौतमस्तस्य शरांश्चिक्षेप षोडश ते शराः सात्वतं भित्त्वा प्राविशन्त धरातलम्

Gautama stood on the ground and shot sixteen arrows at him. Those arrows pierced Sātvata and entered the ground.

गौतम ने भूमि पर खड़े होकर उन पर सोलह बाण छोड़े। वे बाण सात्वत को बींधकर भूमि में समा गये।

चेकितानस्ततः क्रुद्धः पुनश्चिक्षेप तां गदाम् गौतमस्य वधाकाङ्क्षी वृत्रस्येव पुरंदरः

Cekitāna became angry. Wishing to kill Gautama, like Purandara against Vṛtra, he again hurled his club.

चेकिटाना क्रोधित हो गया. वृत्र के विरुद्ध पुरन्दर की भाँति गौतम को मारने की इच्छा से उसने फिर अपनी गदा फेंकी।

तामापतन्तीं विमलामश्मगर्भां महागदाम् शरैरनेकसाहस्रैर्वारयामास गौतमः

That polished and great club was as hard as stone. On seeing it descend, Gautama repulsed it with thousands of arrows.

वह पॉलिश और महान गदा पत्थर के समान कठोर थी। उसे उतरते देख गौतम ने हजारों बाणों से उसे खदेड़ दिया।

चेकितानस्ततः खड्गं कोशादुद्धृत्य भारत लाघवं परमास्थाय गौतमं समुपाद्रवत्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Cekitāna drew his sword out from its sheath. With supreme lightness, he attacked Gautama.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! चेकितान ने अपनी तलवार म्यान से बाहर निकाली। उसने अत्यंत सहजता से गौतम पर आक्रमण किया।

गौतमोऽपि धनुस्त्यक्त्वा प्रगृह्यासिं सुसंशितम् वेगेन महता राजंश्चेकितानमुपाद्रवत्

Gautama discarded his bow and took up an extremely sharp sword. O king! He advanced with great speed towards Cekitāna.

गौतम ने अपना धनुष त्याग दिया और एक अत्यंत तेज़ तलवार उठा ली। हे राजा! वह बड़ी तेजी से सेकिटाना की ओर बढ़ा।

तावुभौ बलसंपन्नौ निस्त्रिंशवरधारिणौ निस्त्रिंशाभ्यां सुतीक्ष्णाभ्यामन्योन्यं संततक्षतुः

Both of them were extremely strong and both wielded supreme swords. They began to strike each other with those extremely sharp swords.

वे दोनों अत्यंत बलशाली थे और दोनों के पास सर्वोच्च तलवारें थीं। वे अत्यंत तीखी तलवारों से एक-दूसरे पर प्रहार करने लगे।

निस्त्रिंशवेगाभिहतौ ततस्तौ पुरुषर्षभौ धरणीं समनुप्राप्तौ सर्वभूतनिषेविताम् मूर्छयाभिपरीताङ्गौ व्यायामेन च मोहितौ

Those bulls among men were struck with the force of each other's swords and fell down on the ground, the abode of all beings. Their limbs became unconscious and they were exhausted because of their exertions.

मनुष्यों में वे बैल एक दूसरे की तलवार के बल से घायल होकर समस्त प्राणियों के निवास स्थान भूमि पर गिर पड़े। उनके अंग अचेत हो गये और परिश्रम के कारण वे थक गये।

ततोऽभ्यधावद्वेगेन करकर्षः सुहृत्तया चेकितानं तथाभूतं दृष्ट्वा समरदुर्मदम् रथमारोपयच्चैनं सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः

Because of his affectionate feelings, Karakarṣa, invincible in battle, swiftly rushed to the spot. He saw that Cekitāna was in that state and while all the soldiers looked on, took him up on his own chariot.

अपनी स्नेहपूर्ण भावनाओं के कारण, युद्ध में अजेय कारकशा तेजी से उस स्थान पर पहुंचे। उसने देखा कि चेकितान उसी अवस्था में था और जब सभी सैनिक देखते रहे, तो वह उसे अपने रथ पर ले गया।

तथैव शकुनिः शूरः स्यालस्तव विशां पते आरोपयद्रथं तूर्णं गौतमं रथिनां वरम्

O lord of the earth! The brave Śākuni, your brother-in-law, swiftly took Gautama, supreme among rāṭha-s, up on his chariot.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आपके बहनोई वीर शकुनि ने बड़ी तेजी से रथियों में श्रेष्ठ गौतम को अपने रथ पर बैठा लिया।

सौमदत्तिं तथा क्रुद्धो धृष्टकेतुर्महाबलः नवत्या सायकैः क्षिप्रं राजन्विव्याध वक्षसि

O king! In anger, the immensely strong Dhṛṣṭaketu pierced Somadatta's son in the chest with ninety arrows.

हे राजा! अत्यंत बलशाली धृष्टकेतु ने क्रोध में आकर सोमदत्त के पुत्र की छाती में नब्बे बाणों से छेद कर दिया।

सौमदत्तिरुरःस्थैस्तैर्भृशं बाणैरशोभत मध्यंदिने महाराज रश्मिभिस्तपनो यथा

O great king! With those arrows on his chest, Somadatta's son looked resplendent, like the sun with its rays at midday.

हे महान राजा! उन बाणों को अपनी छाती पर रखकर सोमदत्त का पुत्र दोपहर के समय अपनी किरणों के साथ सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान हो रहा था।

भूरिश्रवास्तु समरे धृष्टकेतुं महारथम् हतसूतहयं चक्रे विरथं सायकोत्तमैः

However, in that battle, Bhurishrava killed mahāratha Dhṛṣṭaketu's horses and charioteers with supreme arrows and he was deprived of his chariot.

हालाँकि, उस युद्ध में भूरिश्रवा ने महारथी धृष्टकेतु के घोड़ों और सारथियों को अपने उत्तम बाणों से मार डाला और वह अपने रथ से वंचित हो गया।

विरथं चैनमालोक्य हताश्वं हतसारथिम् महता शरवर्षेण छादयामास संयुगे

On seeing that he had been deprived of his chariot and that his horses and his charioteer had been slain in that encounter, he enveloped him with a great shower of arrows.

यह देखकर कि वह अपने रथ से वंचित हो गया है और उसके घोड़े और उसका सारथी उस मुठभेड़ में मारे गए हैं, उसने उसे बाणों की भारी वर्षा से घेर लिया।

स च तं रथमुत्सृज्य धृष्टकेतुर्महामनाः आरुरोह ततो यानं शतानीकस्य मारिष

O venerable one! The great-minded Dhṛṣṭaketu then abandoned his chariot and ascended Śatānīka's vehicle.

हे आदरणीय! तब महामनस्वी धृष्टकेतु ने अपना रथ त्याग दिया और शतानीक के वाहन पर चढ़ गये।

चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च राजन्दुर्मर्षणस्तथा रथिनो हेमसंनाहाः सौभद्रमभिदुद्रुवुः

O king! The rāṭha-s Citrasenā, Vikarṇa and Durmarṣaṇa were clad in golden armour and attacked Subhadrā's son.

हे राजा! रथ-चित्रसेन, विकर्ण और दुर्मर्षण सुनहरे कवच पहने हुए थे और उन्होंने सुभद्रा के पुत्र पर हमला किया।

अभिमन्योस्ततस्तैस्तु घोरं युद्धमवर्तत शरीरस्य यथा राजन्वातपित्तकफैस्त्रिभिः

O king! A terrible encounter commenced between Abhimanyu and those armed ones, like that in the body between vāta, pitta and kapha.

हे राजा! अभिमन्यु और उन शस्त्रधारियों के बीच एक भयानक मुठभेड़ शुरू हुई, जैसे शरीर में वात, पित्त और कफ के बीच होती है।

विरथांस्तव पुत्रांस्तु कृत्वा राजन्महाहवे न जघान नरव्याघ्रः स्मरन्भीमवचस्तदा

O king! In that great battle, he deprived your sons of their chariots. But remembering Bhīmā's pledge, the tiger among men did not kill them.

हे राजा! उस महान युद्ध में उसने आपके पुत्रों को उनके रथों से वंचित कर दिया। लेकिन भीम की प्रतिज्ञा को याद रखते हुए, मनुष्यों के बीच बाघ ने उन्हें नहीं मारा।

ततो राज्ञां बहुशतैर्गजाश्वरथयायिभिः संवृतं समरे भीष्मं देवैरपि दुरासदम्

Bhīṣma was unassailable, even to the gods. In that battle, surrounded by many kings and hundreds of elephants, horses and chariots, he swiftly advanced to rescue your sons.

भीष्म देवताओं के लिए भी अजेय थे। उस युद्ध में अनेक राजाओं तथा सैकड़ों हाथियों, घोड़ों तथा रथों से घिरा हुआ वह आपके पुत्रों को छुड़ाने के लिये तेजी से आगे बढ़ा।

प्रयान्तं शीघ्रमुद्वीक्ष्य परित्रातुं सुतांस्तव अभिमन्युं समुद्दिश्य बालमेकं महारथम् वासुदेवमुवाचेदं कौन्तेयः श्वेतवाहनः

On seeing this and on seeing that mahāratha Abhimanyu, who was only a child, was alone, Kaunteya, the one borne on white steeds, told Vāsudeva,

यह देखकर और यह देखकर कि महारथ अभिमन्यु, जो कि केवल एक बच्चा था, अकेला था, सफेद घोड़ों पर सवार कौन्तेय ने वासुदेव से कहा,

चोदयाश्वान्हृषीकेश यत्रैते बहुला रथाः एते हि बहवः शूराः कृतास्त्रा युद्धदुर्मदाः यथा न हन्युर्नः सेनां तथा माधव चोदय

"O Hṛṣīkeśa! Drive the horses to the spot where those numerous chariots are. There are many brave ones there, skilled in the use of weapons and invincible in battle. O Mādhava! Drive the horses so that they cannot slay our soldiers."

"हे हृषीकेश! घोड़ों को उस स्थान पर ले चलो जहां वे असंख्य रथ हैं। वहां कई बहादुर हैं, जो हथियारों के उपयोग में कुशल हैं और युद्ध में अजेय हैं। हे माधव! घोड़ों को चलाओ ताकि वे हमारे सैनिकों को न मार सकें।"

एवमुक्तः स वार्ष्णेयः कौन्तेयेनामितौजसा रथं श्वेतहयैर्युक्तं प्रेषयामास संयुगे

Thus urged by the infinitely energetic Kaunteya, in that encounter, Vārṣṇeya drove the chariot yoked to the white horses there.

इस प्रकार असीम ऊर्जावान कौन्तेय के आग्रह पर, उस मुठभेड़ में, वार्ष्णेय ने सफेद घोड़ों से जुड़ा हुआ रथ वहां चलाया।

निष्टानको महानासीत्तव सैन्यस्य मारिष यदर्जुनो रणे क्रुद्धः संयातस्तावकान्प्रति

O venerable one! When Arjuna angrily advanced into battle, a great uproar was created by your troops.

हे आदरणीय! जब अर्जुन क्रोधपूर्वक युद्ध में आगे बढ़े तो आपके सैनिकों ने बड़ा उत्पात मचाया।

समासाद्य तु कौन्तेयो राज्ञस्तान्भीष्मरक्षिणः सुशर्माणमथो राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत्

Kaunteya advanced to the kings who were protecting Bhīṣma. O king! He spoke these words to Susharma.

कौन्तेय उन राजाओं की ओर आगे बढ़े जो भीष्म की रक्षा कर रहे थे। हे राजा! ये शब्द उन्होंने सुशर्मा से कहे।

जानामि त्वां युधि श्रेष्ठमत्यन्तं पूर्ववैरिणम् पर्यायस्याद्य संप्राप्तं फलं पश्य सुदारुणम् अद्य ते दर्शयिष्यामि पूर्वप्रेतान्पितामहान्

"I know that you are the foremost among warriors and that you bear extreme enmity towards us from earlier times. You will now behold the extremely terrible fruits of that. I will today show you your deceased ancestors."

"मैं जानता हूं कि आप योद्धाओं में अग्रणी हैं और आप पूर्वकाल से ही हमारे प्रति अत्यंत शत्रुता रखते आए हैं। अब आप उसका अत्यंत भयानक फल देखेंगे। मैं आज आपको आपके मृत पूर्वजों को दिखाऊंगा।"

एवं संजल्पतस्तस्य बीभत्सोः शत्रुघातिनः श्रुत्वापि परुषं वाक्यं सुशर्मा रथयूथपः न चैनमब्रवीत्किंचिच्छुभं वा यदि वाशुभम्

Having heard these harsh words spoken by Bībhatsu, the slayer of enemies, Susharma, the leader of a large number of charioteers, did not speak anything in reply, pleasant or unpleasant.

शत्रुओं का संहार करने वाले बीभत्सु के ऐसे कठोर वचन सुनकर बहुत से रथियों के प्रधान सुशर्मा ने उत्तर में प्रिय या अप्रिय कुछ भी नहीं कहा।

अभि गत्वार्जुनं वीरं राजभिर्बहुभिर्वृतः पुरस्तात्पृष्ठतश्चैव पार्श्वतश्चैव सर्वतः
